SNOW!!!!!!
Lots of snow in Lynden, Wa. Just as much in Abbotsford. It was nuts on Hwy 1 in both directions. So many cars in the ditch. I just don't get it. If you don't know how to drive in snow, GTFO!
Driver up front taps on brakes and people behind him start to panic and slam on their brakes. Damn, look at the overall picture and see what the rest of traffic is doing up ahead.
The ratio of dumb drivers to those who know how to drive in snow is like 100:1. Avoid driving the roads at all cost because of them, not the conditions.

People can't seem to grasp the concept of watching more than one car ahead.

Highway 1 from Prest to Sumas was a gongshow. Cars in the ditches, semis flying by people in the left lane, random braking for no apparent reason and nearly causing a pile up.

Yes. It sucked. Snowstorm wallops Sea to Sky Highway, brings traffic to crawl (PHOTOS) (http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2015/01/snowstorm-wallops-sea-sky-highway-brings-traffic-crawl-photos/)
My wife got stuck 10 metres before getting into our driveway because I road wasn't plowed and two neighbours used their snow blowers and shot it all right onto the road, adding on top of the 11" we already had.

We've had WRG2s for years now, they work really well for what we get in southwestern BC (small amounts of wet snow). If you're heading to places where snow is deeper and more common, though, they're probably not ideal.

Issued at 23:42 Wednesday 16 December 2015
Summary
Snow is possible today over many south coast locales.... Precipitation from the next Pacific front will arrive over the south coast Thursday morning. When precipitation begins, temperatures will be low enough that rain will be mixed with snow over communities near the coast. The major urban areas of the south coast will likely see their first snowflakes of the season. Accumulations near the coast are expected to be minimal and precipitation will change completely to rain by Thursday afternoon. However, where cold air remains trapped over inland regions such as Howe Sound, Whistler, Inland Vancouver Island, and the eastern Fraser Valley, the snow will be longer lasting and more significant snow accumulations are forecast. At least 5 to 10 cm is expected over Inland Vancouver Island, Howe Sound and Whistler. The eastern Fraser Valley will see some snow but it is expected to begin later this afternoon and continue through this evening. TTHE PUBLIC IS ADVISED TO MONITOR FUTURE FORECASTS AND WARNINGS AS WARNINGS MAY BE REQUIRED. PLEASE MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS AND WARNINGS FROM ENVIRONMENT CANADA AT Weather Information - Environment Canada (http://WWW.WEATHEROFFICE.GC.CA) Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to pacificstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports to #BCStorm.

Sidewalks were covered in frost.
But when I pulled up to the red light on Burnaby Mountain Parkway and Duthie, that intersection had an unusual amount of salt on the ground.
Because that intersection is at the bottom hill, I guess there was a stream of water that froze overnight, which needed the ice since the salt brine wouldn't have been enough.
Crazy slippery this morning. Wasn't worth going out to get Starbucks, lol. Gonna rain later and for the rest of the week. At least the days are getting longer. Still lots of time for it to snow. We've had snow up to mid April.

I really, really want it to snow like a mofo this year. It brings much joy, while it's still white. I wish I could find the photo of my old Toyota Previa completely covered in snow in the driveway of my Langley home. That was so long ago. It snowed for days. In 96, I remember sleeping over at a friend's place in the High Gate area.
The snow was 2 ft deep. Even his dad's GMC pickup with 4 wheel drive was getting stuck and spinning all 4 wheels.
Worst part of that winter was the freezing rain.
I remember walking down 12th st New West and the road was completely empty. Our umbrellas were so heavy from the ice build up thanks to the freezing rain.
'96 was awesome. We got about 4 feet of snow and my friends and I would basically alternate between playing in the snow and playing Mario Kart 64 all week.

Disconnect all hoses from the bibs around your property. The last thing you want is busted pipes. Although, it never gets cold enough in our neck of the woods. Route to work is from Richmond to Oak and 25th area via Arthur Lang. Traveling around Richmond, the roads didn't look like they were salted/plowed, but there wasn't that much snow. Seen the usual BMW SUV's going 20-30km/h faster than everyone else and Corolla's driving 20-30km/h slower than everyone else.
The ramp from Marine Drive onto Oak street was completely blocked due to buses.
Went north up Cambie instead, traveling behind a Cadillac that was going really slow up the hill and eventually pulled to the side. Lots of pick up trucks stopped on the side, blocking 1 lane on either side. On the south side, various cars spun out or stopped blocking the lane going down Cambie.
Made it to work on time, only had to leave 15mins early.

Do winter tires make that big of a difference? In the Lower Mainland I've never ran anything but all seasons and never had a problem with front wheel drives and or any of my trucks or my AWD SUV.
Winter tires makes my car feel invincible in the snow. Traction traction traction! Stopping distance is greatly reduced, too.

My fiancee could make it up a steep hill this morning with winter tires. I had to abort the same hill with M+S all seasons. Went home and took transit.

I always had my doubts on winter tires until I actually used some decent ones (hakapalita in both light truck and car tires) I couldn't beleive the difference. And it's not just about snow it's cold wet roads and ice as well.
I use BFG all-terrains on my truck rated with the snowflake, in the last week or so I've almost been rear ended twice by two different cars that couldn't stop in time when the car in front of me braked hard. Both times the car behind me slammed on their brakes and slid past me on the side where I stopped smoothly in a truck loaded with shit
Imo if you're a half decent driver you probably don't need them, but for everyone else and your own personal safety id say they are a worthwhile investment

I remember back in the day going through 6" of snow in my MR2 Turbo on Yoko ES100's... slip and slide but I got where I needed to go... just make sure you brake really really early. I eventually did get snow tires for it.
Had snow tires on my Sonata 2.0T but not enough snow here to justify the cost. On top of that, I bought them skinnier so they dug into the snow but that made for some sketchy handling when it was wet.
In the Genesis 5.0, I just opted with DWS-06. Stopped and started no problem this morning. I'm sure the AWD helped... more than 6" of snow, I'm just going to work from home.

Your best bet is to go to Costco first thing in the morning, drop off the car and wait till they are done.
Now that the first snow has hit, everyone will be out geting their snowies installed.
Would you happen to know what time Costco Tire Center open in the mornings? Put off switching to my winters but luckily I can bus to work, still a gong show though.

winter or snow tire!?!?!
They should be called winter tires - not just for snow, but for ice/cold/wet as well.

I wish people knew how to use gears, watching drivers try to slowly drive down a snowy hill in Coquitlam is entertaining.. I'm passing them in a controlled manner in 1st gear while their pumping their brakes and causing themselves a higher chance of losing traction in Drive.

snow tires make an unbelievable difference. However ive never owned a set in the 15+ years ive been driving and have never got stuck or had an accident. If your going to drive with all seasons you just need to know they have good tread or youll be fucked
