So I too was stuck in that clusterfuck on Tuesday.
Left Marine Crossing area at 4:45, took 20 minutes to get to the foot of the qboro bridge. Spent 20 minutes there while some asshole in a RWD Mercedes tried valiantly to make it up the 4% incline to the bridge. Then got onto the bridge, and spent an hour just parked mid-span.
On the other side, were 2 semis who had given up and pulled over to the right. Then a third shithead semi tried to go in the left lane, and then also got stuck. They spent 30 minutes reversing to clear enough room for cars to maneuver between the trucks, and then randomly a moron with shitty tires would also get stuck. At about 7:30 we moved enough for me to get off the qborough connector, picked up the wife and child from daycare, then slowly inched back towards the qboro bridge.
Saw everything from people peeing on the side of the road to assholes driving on the wrong side of the road just to end up blocking traffic going in other directions, just adding to the clusterfuck. And there were so, so many of these assholes. Many of them completely unapologetic as they block someone from going through an intersection because they're sitting squarely in the middle, facing the wrong way. Got home to Edmonds area around 1am. 8 fucking hours to do 14km.
My takeaway: the shitshow that was Tuesday was predominantly due to the snow coming down later in the afternoon, while people all went to work because the weather was nice in the morning, and with poor preparation as is every year. Then it was made significantly worse by "professional drivers" who didn't know what the fuck they were doing, compounded by selfish pricks who think somehow jumping 10 cars ahead in what is already a parking lot is somehow going to get them home sooner.
Fuck this city when it snows.

I have nothing nice to say about people who left snow on their vehicles before driving. The roads are bad enough to not have to dodge flying ice bombs and drive through near white out conditions from the unsecured load coming off their vehicles.
Laziness and not giving enough time to clear it off are the biggest reasons for it. With all the pumpkin spice drinking basics I spotted with snow on their vehicles, I have to wonder if there also an element of drivers who leave the snow on because it will look cute on their IG or makes their pavement princess truck look rugged.

Some can't even figure out how to turn on their headlights, so clearing off the snow is way too much effort for them. I swear I saw someone only clearing out the top quadrant of the driver-side windshield on Wednesday morning and left the rest untouched.
On Wednesday, I was waiting at a light on.a somewhat covered road. There was a new FRS beside me. The two lanes ahead merge into one. He was in the dying lane. I knew he wanted to get ahead of me as he kept inching forward.
Once the light turned green, he peeled it, only for his rear end to twerk at about 110BPM as I smoothly accelerated forward in my winter tire equipped 28 year minivan.
And then, this morning as I'm headed to work on very clear roads, I was behind this new Mercedes C Class. As soon as we start descending down a very gentle grade, the car slows to around 25km/h and holding the brake all the way to bottom.
These are the people who caused a 12 hour commute for others. But since we live in the age of deflection, they'll blame an entire system over their own mental limitations.
EDIT:
Then there's this guy...

People need to learn to look at the news forecast during the winter, especially if they're one of those fucks driving around without winter tires. If people are too stupid to pony up for winter tires and have them installed by early Nov, then at the very least, follow the news to know when snow is coming and stay the fuck home.

But I know they won't.
The same night I was stuck, after finally getting past the Qboro bridge, there were about 4 cars spun/stuck at the bottom of the 22nd St hill going up into Burnaby. I turn, and this guy is waving frantically at me from his clearly ill equipped Civic, telling me to turn around.

C'mon, it's one day after ... do you think that everyone who got into a crash got around to claiming the next day? I think they can monitor it this whole week as people bring their cars in as a gauge of what happened on Tues.
My guess would be like 3-4x more than usual claims just seeing reports and clips of accidents. One car rolls down the hill and crashes into 4 or 5 vehicles!

Their driver factor will increase if they're at fault, which used to be your discount basically
The "no-fault" system is explained a little bit here (https://warnetthallen.com/icbcs-new-no-fault-insurance/).
Seems like its pertaining to claims of against bodily injury towards the at fault party.
It also seems put together to reduce the "bump in the parking lot and come out rubbing your neck" claims lol
Reads to me like you cannot sue the at fault party for damages beyond their ICBC coverage?

It's worse than that for injuries. You only receive compensation for medical expenses and lost wages from not working. ICBC is the last payer when it comes to lost wages, so you have to use up sick days, vacation, and EI before they cover up to 90%. There is no compensation for pain and suffering or quality of life. The only way you can get anything for that is for you to sue the at fault driver, and that's only if they were criminally charged like a DUI. I found this all put the hard way and have encountered so many examples of people who are shit out of luck from life-altering injuries.

Yeah some parts of the system are pretty terrible, unfortunately we can thank all those people who abused the system, treated every accident like winning the lotto, exaggerated injuries and drove all our rates up to the point of being absurd.
It's unfortunate that people are going to get screwed the way the system is now.

My wife and her mother were both run over by a vehicle about 25 years ago on Broadway. Driver passed out (diabetes) and drove up the sidewalk, one person died a bunch injured. My wife and her mom received a total of about $10k. That’s 3k per axle that rolled over them (mom got completely run over, wife only the one axle). Not sure the laws were so great before…. Saying that, the payouts were low because they had so many payouts to cover in the incident. My wife closes her eyes to this day when driving through the area, not to mention an entire lifetime of pain to go along with it.

If this is true what's the point of paying for more coverage?
From ICBC
Protection if you’re responsible for a crash
Your Basic insurance includes $200,000 in Third Party Liability (TPL) coverage. Under Enhanced Care, the need to sue for accident benefits or vehicle damage against the driver responsible is removed, however, TPL continues to be important in certain circumstances (e.g. non-vehicle property damage or driving out of province) and can protect you in situations where the law permits the other driver to sue. If you want to increase the amount of coverage you have in the event you're responsible for a crash, you may want to consider Extended Third Party Liability coverage, an optional Autoplan product.
As of third party liability this is why you want more.

How do you get rid of ice patches in your walkway?
I've been battling this stubborn ice patch that mysteriously only built up right at the bottom of the staircase.
Anyway, I've been putting Alaskan ice melt salt on it, waiting 15-20 mins, then breaking the ice/shovelling it away. Did a few cycles of that last night, and it seemed like the ice actually just spread even more, lol.
Maybe because the salt is melting it into water, then it's freezing again, making more ice. wtff.. I kept breaking the ice each time. Even used a rubber mallet to crack up all the ice before shoveling the pieces away. I thought all was good.
Tonight, I noticed the same area has ice again. I basically did the same thing as I did last night. This time, after I was done, I put fresh snow on the area to try to absorb up any water. And then shovel the snow away. It may have worked... but hard to tell. Cause now there's a dust of slush/snow in the area. Maybe that'll turn into ice by tomorrow.
There must be a more effective way...
I use spring loaded ice chopper........... similar to this one. Got it at Princess Auto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVpl3uaZr_4
EDIT: I reread your post, lol. The ice is coming from somewhere. Leaking gutters? Plugged downpipes? Put down a piece of plastic or cardboard in the area and see what that does.

No idea where's it coming from. There's no gutters near that area.
Tbh, I think the ice from today was just from the leftover water from last night after the ice melted.
That ice chopper seems handy. I'll think about getting one if the ice remains tomorrow, lolol.

Freezing water will break almost any pipe/fittings due to the force of it as it expands when it freezes.
All the wand washes I know of in vancouver are outdoor, so their hoses/piping leading to their wands are all susceptible to freezing.
If you look at northern towns all the wand washes are inside of heated buildings. you drive through an overhead door to get inside and then wash your car. Unless you see something like that somewhere, they will likely all be closed as temperatures go below zero.
Similarly even automated car washes often dont have heat inside their booths so most of those will be closed as well (i'm thinking like the ones setup in gas stations. I'm sure Shine Auto Wash will be open still.

Similarly even automated car washes often dont have heat inside their booths so most of those will be closed as well (i'm thinking like the ones setup in gas stations. I'm sure Shine Auto Wash will be open still.
At least in Vancouver the Esso on Marine Dr and Fraser's carwash has been open the entire time.

There's a layer of wet dense snow underneath that's gonna freeze over starting right now. If you don't shovel right now then just leave the white fluffy stuff on top so it can provide a bit of grip.
I spent 2 hours shoveling this morning, the snow is fine, the wet under layer was so back breaking.
Then I took my son out for a drive to the store. It's actually quite drifty and fun out on the family bus. Until you realize you can't stop
Lot's of "what is gray car doing?" from my son as we went sideways around some corners.

I went to Princess Auto, Lee Valley Tools and Home Depot in Coquitlam and nobody was out driving. It was nice. Packed snow on United, but clear on Lougheed. At least one lane. I just traveled on the packed snow. No issues in the Ridgeline with Michelin XIce snows.
Going to Bellingham tomorrow early in the morning. Gonna take my sweet time. When laundry has to get done, it has to get done, lol. Hopefully, Trader Joe's will have the Pecan Kringle. I don't like the almond ones they've had for the last two months. Anyway............. sort of wrong thread.
Getting snow off the truck was a challenge. Damn roof rack. Frozen solid and if windshield has any kind of water on it and you park for more than 15 minutes, it's ice. Forgot I had intermittent wiper setting on and nearly shredded the rubber of the wiper. Lesson learned. Wipers off, defrost on, give it five minutes, it's all good.
Forgot to mention. I saw a Mercedes stuck on the side of the road. Like really stuck. I offered to pull him out. He didn't know what a tow hook was. Young guy with two others trying to help. Hey, I offered. All he needed to do was pop the cover off the bumper and screw the tow hook on. I had a tow rope with a locking hook on it............... a gentle pull while he tries to get out is all it takes. Anyway.

Got my first ATV plow this year. Makes moving the snow we had so much easier. Living in a cul de sac and on a steep hill, the city never comes. So I decided to help all the neighbours out. Plowed the whole street and sidewalks. While the homeowners just have to clean up the scraps and salt. Also helped pushed a Uhaul up the hill using the plow for a neighbor that was moving out (worst day to choose), but we made it up.
What takes 1 push with the plow, is like 20+ shovels of snow.

Was trying to get to Richmond today at 1130 and took me 30 mins to cross Knight bridge from 57th and Knight. Couldn't tell from afar looked like a fender bender but as I got close it was some dude in a Civic with his wheels spinning and spinning blocking the left lane. I mean yea the road on the bridge wasn't amazing but there was barely an incline and literally every single type of car, snow tires or not were just cruising by for the entire 30 mins I was there.
Finally though I was in the clear, took Bridgeport East exit and some big semi was stuck at the exit where you merge onto Bridgeport, again wheels spinning, back up and forward again and again. Luckily he finally got to a point after 10 mins that he was far enough to the right where cars could pass him on the left. For fuck sakes it was wack out there.

All flights leaving YVR are cancelled.
Talk about a shitshow at the airport:
https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2022/12/20/snow-vancouver-airport-passengers-stuck/
Vancouver International Airport has been significantly impacted by Tuesday’s massive snowstorm, with all flights leaving the airport cancelled until further notice.
YVR says in a statement the snowstorm has had an “unprecedented” impact on flights and operations, leading to mass cancellations.
“Travel continues to be significantly impacted this morning & we anticipate cancellations to continue through the day and the week ahead,” it said.
Prior to cancelling flights, many passengers endured a sleepless night on the tarmac.
YVR says because of the heavy snow and low visibility, a significant number of flights were delayed or cancelled, which caused congestion on the airfield with aircraft holding at gates and on the tarmac.

So flew home yesterday, YVR is a complete joke.
Flew from Europe to Toronto, Toronto had like 6” of snow or so but the entire airport was bare, you could see they were actively clearing snow and puting down de-icer or whatever all over the runways. Almost all exterior surfaces were bare.
Flash forward to 8pm at YVR, landing on a runway covered in snow seemed sketch af and the plane def felt like it was sliding all over when the reverse thrusters engaged. Had to wait an additional 45 minutes before getting a gate (which, with stories today of planes sitting 4/5/8 hours without getting a gate I can’t complain too much)
Then took another hour and a half to get out bags because they said Westjet emoloyees all called in sick or couldn’t make it in due to the snow (at the time there was like what, 3” in the ground with mostly clear roads?)
Taxi line was 300 people deep, Ubers cancelled twice on us because it seemed like the road into the airport was so jammed it would take 35 minutes to get to that cell phone lot to the arrivals. So we then had to wait 45 minutes for a “delayed” skytrain at the airport station again due to “conditions” sky trained to Cambie, walked 4 blocks in ankle deep snow with our
Luggage to get an Evo and then drove home lol..
In terms of driving those Evo Prius seemed perfectly fine. Drove on some back streets and Cambie/12th/nanaimo didn’t slip once, no issue whatsoever in packed snow

You think it’s acceptable to have an international airport brought to its knees over 6” of snow?

There was another story about one plane sitting overnight for 8 hours before getting a gate
That’s not normal.

Ask and it shall be given:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/metro-vancouver-snow-reasons-why-1.6670237
How many millions of dollars do major Canadian cities budget each year for snow removal?
Montreal $187
Toronto $109
Ottawa $78
Edmonton $57
Calgary $52
Winnipeg $35
Halifax $25
All of Metro Vancouver $10
Vancouver $4
Numbers are approximate, based on most recently available budget document. It is not uncommon for municipalities to overspend their snow removal budgets in any given year due to more extreme weather events.

Couple things, it snows here. It does actually fairly often
Until late into the evening last night, midnight on, there was not very much snow at all. Completely manageable, or at least you’d think it would be.
YVR isn’t Abbotsford or Kelowna. You’ve got dozens of 10-15 hour long range, wide body flights en-route every day. You can’t just be paralyzed over 6” of snow..
I’m not angry or anything, I dealt with it willingly although I really didn’t feel like it but I wasn’t gonna just sit there and wait for somthing to happen like a lot of people seemed to be doing. Just seems insane how poorly prepared a MAJOR international airport that knows snow is a very real possibility can be

I am pretty sure that they have the technology to get accurate weather forecasts at the airport. Doppler radar. Heck, even weathernetwork.com would suffice.

They were though. A foot of snow fell overnight in north van. People are measuring as high as 18 inches in Metro Vancouver in accumulation. That's 3x the historical average December snowfall in 24 hours. Couple that with accumulation that week that hasn't been washed away by rain like most years. As usual it's a no win situation because no one can ever just say "shit happens" anymore, and everyone is always mad at someone for everything. If they had staff and equipment for this it would cost money, then people would bitch that the costs of flying are higher because YVR is "wasting money" on preparing for something that never happens.
The weather outside is weather, and as shit gets crazier because we destroyed the planet, we aren't going to be able to be prepared for everything. It's just like the floods. Everyone asking why they weren't prepared for it? Because it's never happened in the lifetime of anyone that's alive today.

You can’t compare Denver and Vancouver. It’s a major hub for one of the largest airlines in the world, probably more then one. I suggest you compare take off/landings before you even begin to compare budgets. The metropolitan population have little to do with the equation. Just like the city of Vancouver, the airport is not prepared with equipment for the odd snow day we get. Chaos ensues.
I should say. Todays events are completely unacceptable, I feel awful for every passenger, worker involved. But it’s pretty hard to compare an airport which gets 2 snow days a year, probably 10% of the traffic to a couple world class airports. Especially one that gets real winter and obviously require equipment daily. Poor Canada.

Yeah that's why I said US Airline Hubs. People think we are a big airport because we're the #3 city in Canada but in reality we're small potatoes. Denver is massive United hub airport and not really a destination in itself. Whereas Vancouver is the opposite. We actually have "hubs" but only two. Toronto for AC and Calgary for WS. Currently stuck in whitehorse, was supposed to have a AC flight out at 6pm. I am rebooked (of my own accord nothing for help from AC) on an air north flight tomorrow morning.
Here's the thing, and this isn't a knock on YVR, AC, air north or anyone, in fact everyone I spoke to today was super nice, and very helpful.
HOWEVER
From what I can tell AC basically as soon as shit hit the fan at YVR, threw their hands in the air, cancelled every flight and gave up. They actually told me this afternoon, that they have pre-emptively cancelled all of tomorrows flights as well for the region.
Whereas air north is still trying. They have three flights that have been delayed out of whitehorse, they've put additional crews on, they pulled an additional 767 out of their hanger to create capacity when they are able to land at YVR again, and they are keeping everything ready to role from whitehorse. When you talk to the people at the counter, they are upbeat, and maintain the same message: "as soon as YVR clears us to land, we will be wheels up and on our way there".
The other one that irked me about AC, I stop in at the airport at 1pm, 5 hours before my flight, and ask the chick whats going on, and she says "your flight is still on time, there wont be any delays". Keep in mind that I know the tail number of the aircraft, at that point the plane was still physically in denver, It had to leave denver, land in vancouver, reboard and come to whitehorse. It was plainly obvious none of that was happening. But AC refuses to mark the flight as delayed or cancelled until 2 hours before it is scheduled to board. This policy is so stupid, it's obvious the fucking thing isn't showing up, and your so dumb and short sighted, you have no other planes in whitehorse. So why even bullshit me and say it is on time, just cancel the fucker. This is exactly the type of shit that makes people think airlines are partially retarded, anyone with a logical brain can see they have themselves backed into a corner that has no way out, and yet they continue on as if a new plane is going to magically appear in whitehorse ready to roll with a crew.
EDIT: also AC's phone system has been down, like not busy you can't get through, actually down. When you dial it actually just says it is too busy, and to go online. So you can't talk to Air Canada. Their desk agents have been told to not even look up people's flights, that everything needs to go through reservations and rebookings, which is the number that is so full it isn't accepting new callers.
Again comparing to air north, you walk up to the counter, they will book you a ticket, modify your ticket, give you information, whatever. No phone, no bullshit.
I mean I get it, AC is 90X the size of air north, but the bureaucracy and size doesn't help me get home in time for christmas.

AC is known to have bad/lack of common sense service, and things have become worse since covid. They aren't United level of retarded but they are pretty high up there and most people have told me to avoid.
I've never had a poor exp with them though I haven't flown with them since 2015, but the difference is painfully obvious when you compare it KLM, Lufthansa, Cathay, Singapore, etc.

I used to refuse to fly AC until like 2016 when westjet got so bad. I haven’t had a bad time since, but it’s a lot of luck of the draw I think. That said EVERY time I’ve flown WJ in the last 5 years I’ve had delays, terrible service and bad pricing.

I like AC. They just don’t deal with delays and service interruptions very well. Otherwise their normal service is quite good.

I fly alot, and to a lot of ridiculous places. AC and WJ are the same, as badhobz says, they are fine until it isn't, at which point you are on your own.
I take every precaution to limit myself to their ignorance, I dont fly with checked luggage majority of the time, I leave ample room for connections, I simplify my travel arrangements, and when stuff goes sideways I dont wait to fuck around with refunds and their bullshit, I'm booking immediately on whatever is available. I'm probably out the $500 for my flight they cancelled this afternoon, because chasing them for it is probably more trouble then it is worth. I'll let the corporate traveller people deal with that, but they will probably also give up on the endeavor.

I don't like WestJet. The in-service teams are too happy. That pisses me off.
I got lucky and my flight was able to land with only a 30 min delay (but it took off 30 mins late). Few hours later, shit show at YVR happened. Was with WestJet.

WJ is trash. I dislike their 737-800’s the most as they are so uncomfortable compared to the A220 and Max’s AC uses
However what pissed me off the most about WJ was when I flew to Toronto and paid for their stupid “business class” upgrade. Which at the time was just the middle seat blocked off. During the flight they gave some woman who I presume was the grandma of the family a free upgrade to the business class across the aisle from me. The entire time her grandkids or kids whatever they were were running up and down, taking the free food and drinks provided up front and running back. Eventually not once but twice the dumb ass kids split their drinks and the woman’s wine on me..
I emailed WJ saying why the fuck am I paying for this upgrade only to have someone given it for free and experience this Bs?
Their reply was “well much like on other forms of public transport such as a bus we cannot control what others do”
Ffs..
Btw, if you’ve got little brats do everyone else a favour and don’t bring them to the lounge or up into business class plz thx. Frankly you shouldn’t be allowed to book a kid a business class seat

I flew WJ premium economy with their kiddy tray table in the middle seat few times and it was fine.
On a short flight to LA there was immediate food service with actual plates and cutlery, along with fairly regular drink service.
Better than the Intercontinental flight on AC I most recently took on Premium Economy where they had ONE round of drink service the meal. I had to go up to the prep gangways and ask for booze like the alcoholic that I am.
Compared some Asia or Euro airlines who do apertif, dinner drinks, mid-dinner refill, digestif, and nightcap. But that was pre covid so who knows now.

Most likely cancelled. WestJet told everyone at the airport to go home, lol.
All incoming flights with a wingspan over 118 feet are also not permitted to land for two days starting tomorrow morning - meaning most foreign aircraft. Canadian and USA flights, and emergency landings are exempt from this rule.

The metropolitan population have little to do with the equation. Just like the city of Vancouver, the airport is not prepared with equipment for the odd snow day we get. Chaos ensues.
...
it’s pretty hard to compare an airport which gets 2 snow days a year, probably 10% of the traffic to a couple world class airports. Especially one that gets real winter and obviously require equipment daily. Poor Canada.
but shouldn't it? we are the main entry for pacific routes
and climate won't be getting any better and this sure wont be the last time yvr and airlines screw things up so spectacularly
i still dont get how yvr gets rated so highly on airport lists, regardless of size and traffic.. blows my mind

ive noticed this with practically every north american carrier ive been on besides maybe southwest
like they're trying to keep the disappointment at bay until the last very minute only for it to blow out even harder
*flight cancels last second* wE aRe ShOrT-StaFfED! well shit, you figured that out 15 minutes before boarding?? that shift management!
it was already stewing before pandemic then became painfully obvious since
must be some incredibly backwards ass bureaucracy as the root cause of the problem
the widespread dysfunction just makes me not want to take vacations anymore and that really blows as a first world problem because i cant wait to resume traveling

As I expected, the shit show continues at YVR.
https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2022/12/21/vancouver-airport-international-arrivals/
Vancouver International Airport is limiting international arrivals until Friday morning as it continues to deal with major backlogs and delays caused by Tuesday’s snowstorm.
YVR says the winter storm that hit caused widespread flight delays and cancellations, and as a result, a “significant number” of planes remain at the airport, leading to a congested airfield.
“Our focus is to depart aircraft from the airport and get crews and passengers safely on their way. Therefore, we will be temporarily limiting arriving international flights for approximately 48 hours, effective Wednesday, December 21 at 7:00 a.m. through Friday, December 23 at 5:00 a.m.,” the airport said.
The airport believes about 30 international flights will be affected, including all flights from All Nippon Airways, Air China, Air France, Air India, Air New Zealand, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Eurowings, Eva Air, Hainan, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, Philippine Airlines, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines.
