Something to do with your kids if you’re stuck at home during this cold snap.

Note: It has to be colder than -10 Celsius to work.

The corn syrup is needed for sure. I tested out some bubble solution I had around and they just pop.

100%, if my driveway wasn't as steep as it is I'd buy one without a doubt even if I only used it twice a year. As is I think I'd get to the bottom and struggle to get it back up, hell cutting my front lawn without using self drive to pull the lawnmower up is a pain in the ass lol.

Got it at CT in the fall for $800+tax on sale. Reg $900. Also stacked some CT point bonuses, so got another 70-80 in CT bucks.

Went battery powered as I'm in Vancouver after all, plus there's a gas lawn equipment ban coming up I've heard?

I need a leaf blower as well, so looking for a deal as they use the same battery system. This one came with 2x 4ah batteries, I did the equivalent of a 2 car driveway and used 1/5 of the battery capacity. Guessing that for our typical wetter snow the run time would get reduced for the power need.

I loved having the led headlights on it, having extra light was great. Unit size weight was no different from a typical lawn mower., maybe a touch heavier.

I went with this model with the soft paddle. For you guys in the valley, there's a steel auger model, some folks on Rfd have mentioned that they bought the auger separately and installed it themselves as it's a common drive unit.

From what I read, wet fluffy snow is hard for all snowblowers, just have to have more power to push through.

When I was using it last night, I was wondering why it was only throwing the snow 6 feet. Then I remembered the throttle control was at minimum. User error.

100%, if my driveway wasn't as steep as it is I'd buy one without a doubt even if I only used it twice a year. As is I think I'd get to the bottom and struggle to get it back up, hell cutting my front lawn without using self drive to pull the lawnmower up is a pain in the ass lol.

They have models that have self drive as well. But yeah the entry models don't, and work best on flat level driveways. The manual warns about gravel half a dozen times to print damage to the auger/paddle/chute and such. So you'd want a fairly clean driveway too

Once the traffic was cleared, the section from no.6 road til the s curve (westminster hwy exit) on hwy 91 was still icy af, I tried braking because no1 was close behind and beside me and I was sliding

As I expected, the cold winter weather is affecting parts of the airport.

A pipe burst at YVR. One section of a domestic terminal was flooded after a pipe burst.

Other than that, I have not heard any news about flight delays because of the weather. Business as usual.

https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/01/12/yvr-gate-flood-pipe/

Vancouver International Airport confirms to CityNews that a pipe leaking near one of its gates sent water flooding into a section of the domestic terminal.

“Our operations and maintenance teams have secured the area and are working to repair the leak. Work is also underway to remediate. Operations are not affected,” the Vancouver Airport Authority said in an email just after 2 p.m.

Drove my wife to work, roads were in meh condition, Highway 1 had no lines visible, same with 152. Lots of drivers doing dumb things in Surrey and on the way to Metrotown as well. Central Boulevard looked unplowed, it was pretty bad.

It seems a bit unfair to generalize all teenagers, or any specific group, based on the actions of a few and associate the entire group with negative behavior. My entire block was unshoveled at 9AM when I was out, and none of the adults were out shoveling.

So after snowblowing my parents driveway.... I need more batteries. The amount and depth of snow meant that I had to recharge 3x to get the job done. Need more and bigger batteries, the 2Ah isn't going to cut it for deep snowfall.

Had about 10"-12" of snow in North Burnaby, and it's essentially a 6-7 car driveway with a slope so quite a bit of area to cover.

This is what one (probably not fully charged) battery got me. I had to make multiple runs at the first edge to start as it was deep. It was better once I could do passes that only took up half the feed chute.

I usually do my neighbour's sidewalk if they haven't done it. They've invited us over for their grandkid's birthday parties multiple times. They usually get to it earlier than I do though cause I have morning meetings, but I do another quick clean up for them when I'm out.

I don't know how we managed to get more snow than last year, on an El Nino winter. Warm winter my butt.

I took the M3 out to take my kids out to go sleighing and almost couldn't get back into my garage. Definitely deeper than last year when I had no problems.

Running time is about 15-20 mins (depending on load etc) and charging is about the same I'd guess. While it was charging I'd go use a shovel to clean up the previous area and scrape it a bit cleaner.

I have this little thing and used it for the first time today. It was not designed for the depth of snow we had but it was still helpful in terms of reducing the physicality of it. Snow was so deep I had to do 2 passes but the 2nd pass went by pretty quick once it was less than 6" deep. I haven't tired with slushy snow but I would guess it's not great at it.

For $200 including a battery it does the job and takes up very little space in my garage (I have nowhere to store the $500+ machines).

From what I've read online, even 2 stages have issues with wet snow, more power would help.

I've had one of these tools before, but either I'm using it wrong or they're not that effective unless you have a big lot.

When I was using mine, it would do a fine job blasting the snow up into the air, but as long as you don't mind just shooting it into the back alley or into your neighbour's yard, it didn't seem very usable to me otherwise...

The one I had didn't have a way to control the angle. If it could shoot at a low angle so that the snow would just hit my fence, instead of shoot over it, that would have made it so much more useful.

Yeah, it would be useless for a bigger lot and even their ads say it's for sidewalks and decks. I have about 500-700sf of driveway and sidewalk that I have to clear and I'd say that's the most space you'd want to use it for.

In my case I have place to spray the snow (my lawn or the part of the driveway I don't have to clear) so spraying straight ahead isn't too much of a problem. Definitely not able to throw it over a fence though. OTOH, my 4 year old had a blast getting sprayed by it.

I thought about buying a snowblower this year, after last years snow storm. But I figured hell it's just one day, why spend the money. Well. I wish I bought the snowblower lol.

I plowed and salted again last night to get rid of the left over that I couldn't get with a shovel. Went back out there again today to clean up the rest of the sidewalk. I'm the only person on my street (and it's a bus route) that has a completely cleared (you can see concrete) sidewalk. smfh.

https://www.ryobitools.com/products/details/46396045393#

I have this little thing and used it for the first time today. It was not designed for the depth of snow we had but it was still helpful in terms of reducing the physicality of it. Snow was so deep I had to do 2 passes but the 2nd pass went by pretty quick once it was less than 6" deep. I haven't tired with slushy snow but I would guess it's not great at it.

For $200 including a battery it does the job and takes up very little space in my garage (I have nowhere to store the $500+ machines).

A few winters ago, I bought one of these and used it to clear some snow in Whistler.

https://www.rona.ca/en/product/snow-joe-13-in-plastic-snow-shovel-with-adjustable-handle-323e-14585041

Similar to the Ryobi, but corded.

I have to say, ours didn't work very well.

When pushing forward, it scrapes the ground of course, but kept getting caught on ruts and uneven portions which would cause an abrupt halt to your forward motion. That happens with manual shovels too, but shovels are light, and this thing wasn't.

It wasn't very good with heavier, wet snow. Might be better in the interior where the snow is drier and lighter.

The cord was super annoying.

And it just sprays the snow forward, into your walking path, making even more snow in front of you to clear away.

Hopefully your experience was better than mine!

Pho Zen at Marine and Fraser is pretty good. They have up to a XXL under $20.

Back to snow:
I dug out my cars. One was parked on the street. 12" wet snow consistency. Used the snow blower to clear in front/back of the car. Roughly double the amps to clear but did ok. Cleared down to the bare road, even the hardpack that's been run over by cars.
Best part was not caring how much show was cleared off the car. Just push it all off and then run the SB to clear.
I'd recommend one that can take 2 batteries at once so you can run both for the full runtime, or one while the other's charging to minimize down time.

Cc2s are great and all but they can’t overcome physics. Your super front heavy sienna isn’t going to be great in the snow/ice regardless of tire choices if you’re trying to climb an icy boundary road.

You’ll need studded ice tires for that kinda shit.

Yes, those work pretty well. Especially if you have to move very very heavy snow. Like snow that's piled up on the side of the road blocking in your driveaway after the plow goes past. You don't need to lift it off the ground, it saves your back.

headhunt3r
01-19-2024, 02:11 PM
I have one and it's way better than a regular shovel. It moves a lot more snow at a time and doesn't require you to lift anything off the ground. I used it last night to clear the snow that the plow left in front of my driveway. When not in use though, it takes up a ton of space and is bulky to store.

It definitely has its uses. I also own a cheap wired snowjoe blower to clear the light fluffy stuff when it's there.

I would say Sorel is a high quality boot company. They make good quality winter boots. The thing is, winter boots are pretty niche though. How often do you need a winter boot?

So, on sale I feel like they're a good deal, but I wouldn't wear it enough to justify it at full price.

I have blundstones, but they provide almost no grip in the winter weather when there's snow/slush, so having a winter boot for me when I go out for a walk is a must.

Dang Anh Cafe - Chinese donut with your pho. they used to be open till like 2-3am, but google says 12am now.

Pho Thai hang 2 express for sandwiches + really good selection of premade stuff. this is my go to place for sandwiches. sad the old location on Kingsway/Victoria was closed down. everything there was good.

Hoang yen / Phuong nam for bun rieu / crab noodle soup

If we get more snow I'd love to hear feedback on how single stage blowers do with the wet stuff. Snowblower is useless for me if it cannot move heavy snow.

That was my worry too. I was just out clearing my back alley. 3" of wet snow/slush. It's basically the uncleared snow that's been melting and rained on all say. I think it should do fine. Here's the video: https://youtu.be/pnIvyp6T2oo?si=V2Vawmg0pTLNA6w4
The issue would be how deep the wet snow you're clearing. I put the blower to full power and just went slow.

I like banh mi Saigon their meatball and house specials are tasty

Tried their viet Bao they make as well, was ok basically spring roll filling inside a Bao, sounded better than it tasted.

Those little puff pastries with meatball inside though are addictive lol

So, the Civic does shockingly well in the snow with proper tires. Main issue is the ground clearance. I feel like LSD does help on the side streets and back lanes - comparing to my Mazda 3 previously.

Man, I've been dailying my civics through snow since forever lol. Back in 2008 when we got hit with that huge dump of snow, I was still driving the EK on all seasons and just steaming past all sorts of SUVs and RWD Euros/Domestics. I also had no LSD in the EK back then and right now my EF has no LSD either. Proper snow tires make the car feel nearly invincible if not for my lowered height at times :lol

lower mainland in general, people love to wear all black especially on dark, stormy cold nights carrying their black umbrella and their knee length coats in black.

While J walking.

don't forget with ear buds / headphones on, and looking down on their phone, walking at the speed of a senior citizen expecting everyone to stop for 'em

this isn't even a gen z thing. how do people still not understand?

sure, as a pedestrian you have the right to cross but that doesn't prevent the car from potentially killing you. if being right matters more than being alive then go for it dumbasses

people are dumb as shit and getting dumber it seems lol..

The same mentality applies to certain entitled cyclists too. If it is you on your bike against me in my car, I can guarantee you that you'd be the one hurting far more than I'm hurting. FailFish
