the rare event you get away from the responsibility of rear-ending someone else is if they cut into your lane with minimal safety buffer

Fuck Richmond. Fuck Richmond and snow.

I'm on full snowflake/mountain snow tires, guy late turns in front of me, I panic brake and spin into a curb. Anyone know how ICBC claim works without dashcam/plate. Other car (took off) was an 07-ish beige sienna.

Fucking Richmond drivers.
Please tell me you have dash cam footage of it?

At least with that, you have a fighting chance of making your case with ICBC. But if you can't identify the licence plate on the other car, I think you'd still be screwed since ICBC always needs to assign fault to somebody, and without another licence plate, you'd be that only "somebody". :(

Seems like Specter + everyone who thanked him think Bic was following the car that turned.

Hobz thinks Bic was travelling in the opposite direction of the car that turned.

Bic....which is it?

If your options are to hit the offending vehicle, or avoid the collision and hit a ditch/pole/curb - you aim right for that fucker. ICBC doesn't pay out for doing the right thing.

Starting to snow again in Coquitlam

Dropped my car off at body shop in pomo this morning, Blue Mountain was super super super messed up. Panel vans sliding down backwards, cars ditched left, right and center. On the way back to Richmond, on Blue Mtn, FedEx truck, bus, and several other cars were stuck.

I have winters and I still couldn't get started on Blue Mtn, slid back a bit, gave up and took Nelson LOL.

Marine x SB Boundary, bus/semi/sedan crashed. Knight to 99S, two vehicles crashed there as well.

It's bad out there. Drive safe everyone!

Similar scenario for me a couple years ago, rain though, not snow. The person pulled over and apologized, gave me their insurance papers and license. ICBC still ruled me to be at fault.

Wow wtf? That's pretty messed up.

so you didn't leave enough stopping distance as the following vehicle, while knowing the driving conditions, and lost control while doing so and now blaming the car in front of you?

What am I missing here...

From my understanding I thought the person was an oncoming left turner. But could be wrong!

Yep this. Looks like my original post was poorly written.

Please tell me you have dash cam footage of it?

Nope. Been meaning to hardwire, never got around to it.

Had a tonne of fun ripping around town yesterday. Just crawling past those stuck on BBY mountain without snows. The look of defeat on their faces. I'm sorry, don't expect me to push you when you're not even prepared for the conditions in your own neighborhood, which happens yearly on top of the many warnings.

Buddy has a video of a Jeep Wrangler towing a full on 18wheeler across the Port Mann this morning.. LOL

The guy turns in front of him without warning. How can you leave enough distance when these clowns decide to do that in front of you ?! FailFish

Because, by the letter of the law, you are supposed to leave enough of a gap to be able to anticipate this stuff. Now, whether or not that is realistic in a daily fashion is certainly debatable. But by the letter of the law, that's the deal.

Which means, when it happens to us we get to bitch about the guy in front causing the problem. When it happens to someone else on the internet we get to ride the high horse that they should be prepared! ha

Doesn’t matter still his fault lol jk.

Last night the traffic was going a solid 20km/h when the 5 or 6 cars in front of me all went into the left turning lane at the traffic light ahead. One car decided to switch back to my lane and cut me right off. It required some evasive maneuvering, without anything I could have done to prevent it. People just turn to idiots in this weather. There is no explanation lol. They then continued to drive about 15km/h for the next 3 km.

On another note. I headed up into the hills to try and find some deep windrows to try and get stuck in. It didn’t work. I wanted to use the locking feature. Lol.

Going up the cut west bound last night wasn’t bad, but there were tons of cars stuck and sideways in the right lane and shoulder and the Mtn Hwy on-ramp. Still had two clear lanes. There was an Audi facing the wrong way on the Mtn Hwy N/B exit.

East bound was fucked because of the accident on the Second Narrows Crossing tho

Then as I came to a full stop and looked in my rear view mirror, I see a SUV pretty far away, but coming in way too fast fishtailing, bounce off the barrier and then into me...

You obviously have to drive for road conditions but it's not that bad if you take your time. In the 90's I'd drive in snow like this with my 5.0L Mustang and with my RX7 rocking all seasons, now that was dicey.

Interesting, all things being equal ie. FWD vs. FWD and say both cars have snows on, what makes a particular car 'better' in snow? I heard people describe it as such but what other factors go into a FWD car that makes it particularly good on snow? Weight distribution?

More weight over the drive wheels, the way the engine delivers power (turbo cars are actually not great at this as there's a jolt of power down low - smoother the better), the wheelbase length (longer = smoother and stabler) and the way the traction control/ESP is set up.

This is an obvious tip for most but if you have a truck fill the box up with snow, that added weight over the rear wheels is helpful.

Meh. You can't depend on transit or the city when it snows. So people with all season tires that think the city will have the roads nice and salted so they can go on their marry way will get a wake up call. If you are prepared it won't be an issue. If this is the city response to snow, can't imagine a natural disaster like a mega earthquake.

Yea, I tried it in Sport mode and the throttle response is very good for dry conditions but not so good for snow conditions, ie, it's too sensitive and the dual clutch transmission engages too quickly. Normal drive mode and Eco mode are much better with this car in snow like this. Also I was driving with traction control off but dynamic stability control on. It does spin its wheels a bit when setting off from a stop but it still gets going even on slight inclines.

stewie
01-15-2020, 11:17 AM

May not seem like it but the cities are plowing and salting 24/7.

Think of how many streets are in Vancouver or any city for that matter and compare it to how many trucks/employees there are. If it doesn't directly benefit someone it may seem like they're doing nothing and they call them every name in the book, but they are working 24/7.

Believe it or not, the city workers deserve a bit of credit.

I'll add another comment on this - IF anyone may be wondering why a side street that's been plowed in the past hasn't been plowed this time around, look where cars are parked. If the plow can't make it down the street without doing damage to cars because they've parked to far away from the curb due to shoveling their sidewalks and dumping the snow on the road, they will not go down the street. It's not worth damaging 20 cars to satisfy 1 person.

Meh. You can't depend on transit or the city when it snows. So people with all season tires that think the city will have the roads nice and salted so they can go on their marry way will get a wake up call. If you are prepared it won't be an issue. If this is the city response to snow, can't imagine a natural disaster like a mega earthquake.

But...

A Goat loses to a Subaru Outback in its natural environment. Surely Mariner hill should be cakewalk!

for what its worth, different city has different issues. I remember talking ot city of burnaby and they keep on saying F U Northshore... you're only 20% of what we CoB has to deal with (same for C of Van).

Aside from that, this whole snow, cold weather, causing sheets of ice + trying to find the right mix between chemicals, salts, etc... is causing some issues.

I'm sure if you're talking to the snow plow guys they are definitely working solid hours trying to deal with all this shit.

My work van on the other hand with the factory all seasons leaves much to be desired. Was supposed to drive out to Port Kells/Langley today but decided to postpone til tomorrow. News say that they may have to close some of the bridges tonight for driver safety ... ie. ice bombs ... presumably Hwy 1, Alex Fraser.

Bridge and highway closures possible due to snow
https://bc.ctvnews.ca/travel-advisory-bridge-and-highway-closures-possible-due-to-snow-1.4768346

"With a snowy weather forecast leading into this evening and tomorrow, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure advises it may be necessary to close bridges and highways as a precautionary measure to help ensure the safety of travellers," the ministry said in a statement.

"These conditions may lead to lane closures and/or full bridge closures, given the challenges already faced managing these weather conditions on the Port Mann and Alex Fraser bridges due to snow shedding."

Because unless it's literally their first time living here in Vancouver during winter, people by now should be prepared and have tires that are suitable for the weather conditions. (Same goes for having salt, a shovel, all of that basic necessities for snow)

People with tires that can handle the snow no problem are tired of being stuck behind people who are barely getting by because they decided winter tires aren't worth the bother just because they only need it a few weeks a year.. They'll just tough it out and drive overly cautious being part of the problem. Yeah, they've been saying that for the past 5 years in a row.

It's no different than when the weather is great, and you have some guy in front who's not very capable at driving, so to compensate, they drive overly cautious and go 40km/h cause they are scared to lose control. It's annoying and backing up traffic if everyone else is capable of safely going 50-60.

It almost seems like some people have never driven on good snow tires before and have no idea the kind of control they're missing out on when snow is out.

Exactly.

Tires are what keep you and your car safely on the road and out of the ditch. If you can't wrap that around your head because you're too cheap to spend the $1000 then you shouldn't own a car or be on the road.

!LittleDragon
01-15-2020, 07:04 PM
With or without proper tires, people still don't know how to drive here. I haven't had winter tires in almost 5 years and no problems. All season or all weather tires are good enough. As long as you're not driving on summers or bald tires, you're fine. I don't care what tires I'm driving on, even when I had winter tires, I wouldn't drive above 30.

Back in the day, I used to drive in these conditions in an MR2 turbo with ES100's. Still didn't get stuck... lol... at least not due to traction, did get stuck because the car's too low.

Well winter tires actually do help with stopping. Which is exactly why AWD without winter tires is a false sense of security, because people can get going better, but their stopping ability is about the same as a FWD or RWD with equal tires.

well y'all can go cautious up a hill but I'll be part of the roadblock if I dont keep up momentum

I drove mines on all the snow days we had so far. It was fine and I have on new continental Vikings that I just bought. I can't really comment on the range loss though as I drive it within 15 km and charge it nightly so I don't notice a huge loss.

If anyone is looking for Ice Melt. Costco has Alaskan ones for $19.99. 50 lb bags. Brighton and Willingdon each got one pallet this morning. That's like 50 bags. At 9:30 am, there was maybe 40 bags left (they opened at 9:00 am). I got enough for next year, lol. They're out of stock everywhere else and pricier. Every time I buy them, weather gets better, so let's hope that's the case again this year. The stuff keeps well, as long as you keep them out of the sun (UV rays). I keep mine in the dark corner of the garage. If you open a bag, store leftovers in a black or dark 5 gallon plastic pail with a good lid. I found one that was 6 years old, maybe older, and it's as good as new.

Battery doesn't like cold temps. Range definitely went down with the cold battery.
Also charging time seems to have slowed down with the colder temps. Was parked at a DCFC for 40 mins and only got 40% charge on my 18 leaf.
In the summer, that 40 mins would have had me up to 80% plus.

Didn't see a huge difference in range with teh snow tires. I have the conti Vikings too. But then again I went down to a 15 so less rotational mass but less areodynamic as the wheels are open spoked.

And all this was with the heater off. With the heater on, range went down event more.

That's a good price. I saw 10 5kg bottles of Alaskan at London drugs last night. Surprised they had any left.

I've used Alaskan for years, but this year I picked up a 40 lb bag of the Scott's EZmelt to see if it works better. Cost was the same as 40 lb bags of Alaskan, both at Home Depot. The Scott's stuff has the NACl/CaCl/MG etc all mixed into one chunk, and the particles seem to be denser and more solid than the Alaskan formula which seems to be more flakier.

I had a new bottle of the Alaskan melt to compare to, and the Scotts does seem to melt the snow/ice faster like it claims, and the denser chunks seem to last longer than Alaskan, so I've used less melt. Not sure if there's less concrete spalling/damage yet, we'll see after the snow's over.

It's a good deal at Costco, as having any melt is better than none, but I'm thinking of switching to the Scott's stuff going forward.

They didn't realize they could get a combination of volation with blocked rear view + unsecure load of snow

Source: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/winnipeg-ticket-snow-1.3926349
Maybe they're taking the opportunity to not be constantly blinded in the rear view mirror by high beams and overly bright headlights. :considered:

I don't think blocked rear view is a thing. MVA says if your rear view is obstructed, the vehicle must have mirrors on the outside. I've driven vehicles that don't even have a rear view because there weren't any windows in the back.

Is that it? Is it over? No more snow? Well, that was short lived.. I didn't really get to enjoy it much. Only shovelled snow for 2 days and a bit and now it's getting washed away. I like it when it snows... The city seems to be a bit more quiet and time seems to slow down. it's a nice change, but the commute can be hectic. I guess that's vancouver snow season for you. I hope you guys were able to enjoy the snow while it lasted .

Drive across it like I did. None of this fly over and rent a car bullshit. Seeing this country and experiencing all it has to offer. I've crossed so many things off my bucket list. The people who live in the Maritimes are beyond words. The nicest people you'll ever meet. It took me 4-1/2 weeks to drive across the US then back across the Trans Canada. That was pushing it. You need two months, minimum. Roadside Attractions, small towns, landmarks, etc.

I did the cross-country drive last year - Newfoundland is by far my favourite province second to BC. I still find it hard to put into words besides just telling people to go there.

Spent 10 days going from St. John's to Halifax, stopping in Bonavista, Twilingate, and Gros Morne National Park. Amazing untouched sights, amazing people, amazing food, and iceberg beer.

just off to the left of the camera's view, because she took 2 lanes to turn and at such a slow pace, cars were stopping and lining up waiting for her, which eventually everyone drove around, she was literally an obstacle on the road.

Once I see a week with an average of 7 degrees or less, it's the weekend before that I put on my tires.

I put on my tires just yesterday because of this week's forecast.

This actually surprises me. I learned how to drive safely with snow and also what's the do's/don'ts in snowy condition from my landlord in ON when I first got there. Everything from how braking, accelerating and maneuvering differ normally vs. in snow... 15min with snow in an empty parking lot packed with powder was all it took.

So I assume anyone in snowy areas just know them because everyone knew them.
