What's the place in North Van called?
Used to be called easywash, and they had some fancy sales pitch about recycled water and whatever.
Now it's literally just called "autowash"

There's also a touchless (with under carriage spray) in Coquitlam on Lougheed near North Road called Wash World. Probably an ice rink by now though.
I went on the cold snap week just before the second dump of snow in December and my traction control light came on a few times as I was slowly exiting the wash bay as the car was being dried.
i tried that one a few weeks back... the place is a bit run down and the wash is not the best.

To be expected for most auto wash locations. But it's the only one near my place with touchless and under spray.
What's a good touchless place you recommend?

Is 604-294-7460 the correct number for reporting sidewalks in Burnaby?
Impossible to get through that line. But based on the numbers of households not giving a damn about their sidewalks, I can understand why.
Edited: Got through.
City of Burnaby doesn't take any reports of sidewalks infront of households. Only for sidewalks infront strata and business buildings. No wonder so many assholes are getting away with it.

wendy's on grandview and boundary.
yesterday, i tried turning in from grandview, saw an suv with hazards slowly coming down the ramp trying to exit. waited for a while for them to come out, got impatient, proceeded towards the boundary entrance instead. drove in, tried to loop around the restaurant to get to the drive through. well, i found out the reason for why the suv was exiting onto grandview so slowly. anyhow, sliding down the ramp side ways was not fun, noped the fuck out of there.
I was driving down Grandview yesterday and saw some cop cars blocking off one of the side streets near the Canadian Tire. Took a peek and there were a couple of cars that were sideways (presumably from sliding down the street). I'm guessing anything north facing isn't getting a whole lot of sun to melt.
I was driving down a back lane yesterday with a slight decline and even with my Xi3's I still slid a good 10 feet on some ice when braking. Be careful out there and leave a lot of extra room - even if you've got some winter tires!
On a seperate note, anyone know anywhere that's still got snow shovels? I've managed to break both of my shovels over the last week shoveling snow. Checked a bunch of places around Vancouver and everyone is out. :flamemad:
Watching the game last night I saw Wendy's 4 dolla double stack deal. Had to try it, so here I am at the Grandview and Boundary location, parked next to the tree there to shade me from that blinding sun. Anyway, the parking lot is absolutely frozen and dangerous. As I open up the bag to get the burger out I see from my side mirror this Civic skidding out of control toward me. Driver was going way too fast for the conditions. After he comes to a complete stop, he tries to go up the hill. He was going nowhere. Total douche. I roll down driver,s window and give him the thumbs up. Looked like he didn't have snows. Save money and park there. No need to pay good money to see a circus. This is free and way more entertaining.
They re-opened it? When I drove by around 1:30pm both entrance/exits were blocked off and it said the restaurant was closed.
I was told by dude at the window today that it was so crazy yesterday that they had no choice but to close it down.

That is really weird that they're not taking reports.
I called last week when they were closed and used the emergency number cause I was pissed at the neighbour on the corner lot cause I almost wiped out walking my dog. The guy on the other end of the emergency line said that they do take calls but since it's out of office hours, he'll take down all the info and the offending property's address and pass it along to the inspector the next morning. I drove past that house the following afternoon and the sidewalk was plowed

They must been overloaded with phone calls and decided to not take down address of household sidewalks.
I understand it all comes down to resources (both the person on the phone and the inspector that goes out to the field). But all it takes is a couple warning (and fines). Once people know the city is serious about it, and/or heard stories of neighbours, friends, friends of friends, friends of friend's friends etc....then there won't be so many assholes not shoveling/salting their sidewalks.
:yuno:
They can/should even have a webpage on the City's website where you can submit offending addresses. Or pin point a location. Then the field inspector could efficiency hit up a list of households all in the same area in one trip.

what is it with surrey and not plowing the turn lanes? it's all uncleared snow and ice.
you pull up to the turn signal light and if you're lucky you don't slide your way over the stop line and take out pedestrians like bowling pins, and when the turn signal goes green, no one can move because you're sitting on ice.
so other drivers have to go around you in the straight thru lane blocking other traffic because the turn signal has now turned red.
fail fail fail.

I think if you're the sole occupant of the residence you are required (regardless of landlord or tenant) but if you're a tenant then the landlord is required to provide the necessary equipment for snow/ice removal. I think.
I help out with shoveling/salting (landlord lives upstairs and is a family friend), but when I lived in Burnaby in the same situation (except the landlord was just my landlord) I left the shoveling/salting to him.

City of Vancouver to clear snow from residential streets after many complaints - NEWS 1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2017/01/03/thousands-complaints-vancouver-property-owners-failing-clear-ice-snow/)
Legalities of clearing snow and ice
NEWS 1130 Legal Analyst Michael Shapray says it comes down to who lives there in front of the property and not who owns it. “Generally, the person who is in the property is responsible clearing the sidewalks in front of the residence or business.”
That’s unless there’s an agreement in the lease that someone else like the landlord will take responsibility. “The expectation is when you’re going on private premises that are run by a business that there will be a clearing of the parking lot and the sidewalks leading into the businesses so people don’t slip and fall. Any business that is inviting the public onto their premises is responsible for providing a safe environment. They can be held responsible if they don’t.”

I wonder how much salt people are using on a daily basis. :yuno:
We got 2 10kg bags for my moms house in mid-December. She lives in a Vancouver special in North Burnaby. She has a driveway that fits about 4 cars, a front and back walkway that is 20 feet combined and the sidewalk which is about 30 feet. I'm the one who shovels it the day after a snowfall and I maybe lightly sprinkle salt, throwing handfuls around like I'm feeding birds once every 3-4 days, depending on the weather. Currently all walkways are bare, cars get in and out of the driveway with no slipping and no snow tires and I haven't even opened the 2nd bag yet.
And then there are people lining up at firehalls that clearly service neighborhoods with Vancouver special style homes and those residents are hoping to fill up garbage cans or wine buckets, cause they feel they need that much.
Here is my question... How much salt do you put down, how much pavement do you have to cover and how frequently do you apply salt? Discuss. PJSalt

You got to figure with the type of people that show up for free stuff typically, they are probably hoarding more than they need and selling it on craigslist now haha.
They really should have made showing ID with a residence in the neighborhood mandatory with a contribution to one of the firefighters charities, like the burn fund or something.
Lol, I've been using the same 3 bags of salt for the last 5 years. I might have to buy some more after this winter but I'm with you how much fucking salt does one need?
I wouldn't be surprised if half of this salt ends up on Craigslist.
I just opened a small bag of salt (I think it's a 10KG bag) and used about 1/4 of it in the last 2 weeks. However, we're pretty on the ball with shovelling so I really only put salt down when we get the melt/refreeze and not to melt large amounts of snow/ice from not being plowed.

Like most of you have mentioned, how much salt does one need anyway. We had 2 bags left from previous winters and we've barely even used it. We stay on top of our shoveling and throw down a bit of salt. I swear some people don't even know the proper way to salt either, you don't need to drench the surface with salt and why are you throwing it on top of the snow? like come on

Free salt at some Vancouver fire halls is resupplied after quickly running out - NEWS 1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2017/01/04/free-salt-handed-daily-vancouver-fire-halls/)
Last night Captain Jonathan Gormick says they had to step in when one man took things a little too far. “We had to physically restrain someone who brought a pick-up truck and was attempting to fill garbage pails full of salt in the back of their pick-up truck, which is more than what any one resident could use for their sidewalk and driveway.”
Gormick says they’ll use the honour system in hopes people will share. “We will have staff watching, but we don’t have dedicated staff standing to watch over the piles. We’re just hoping people act civilized and take as much salt as they realistically need for a residential walkway and driveway

Reminds me of when I worked a a gas station in Abbotsford. When gas prices were $0.10 to $0.20 cheaper than the rest of the Lower Mainland, you would see certain people fill up 5-6 large jerry cans and load them into the trunk of their car. They really didn't seem like the type to be stocking up for some jobsite out in the boonies, so they were either saving it up for their own use or selling it at a higher price.
12 skids of Safe T Salt just arrived at Rona on Grandview Hwy and Renfrew. Haven't been unloaded yet.

godwin
01-04-2017, 01:36 PM
Got one HD bucket with my folding shovel from the Haro location this morning.. no fuss at all.. You want maximum benefit from it.. store it in your hose so your heating system will suck out the moisture, once it gets dry then put a lid on it. Remember if the salt is a wet mess, it won't help you as much.
Amazing how unprepared even for free salt people are.. garbage bags, no shovel, no work gloves.. some seems to expect the fireman to shovel for them!!!
Honestly with donation costs a lot more than buying from stores. haha
Oh BTW the staff at Rona Coquitlam said there might be salt coming on Friday.

It is not how much salt but when do you put down salt.
Situation depends on the snow type (so always check the weather report before you salt).. if it is dry powdery stuff, I suggest do it after you have cleared.. one of my neighbors was smart to use a leave blower to blow away powdered snow. Remember melted snow will be heavier. This trick won't work when the weather is warming.
Wet snow you want to do it before it snows, so the snow melts right away. And afterwards.
Gravity works both ways, so remember always push down hill and the more snow you have left out there, the weight of the snow on top will melt the snow below forming ice. The trick is the shovel before melting starts, so I like to shovel at night, besides there is something zen about it, and also I love waking up the neighbors!:lawl:
Oh also get 2 types of shovel, the one that throws and one that push.
How much salt you put down depends on how often you go out to check. In the morning I try to chip away snow melt stuff and black ice, lay down salt, breakfast, then clear away ice on my way out.. Then at night I just clear the ice, salt and go back inside. Since the weather calls for clear, you don't really need to salt bare patches, just ice melts.
Here is my question... How much salt do you put down, how much pavement do you have to cover and how frequently do you apply salt? Discuss. PJSalt

Or if you don't have a leaf blower, use a broom to sweep it away. I noticed when I was shovelling, my bumpy ass concrete was collecting a small layer of snow where the shovel wasn't making contact with the lowest point of the concrete. I figured once it melts and refreezes, it'll become slick so I just gave it a quick sweep with the broom to clear the snow away after shoveling.

1. It is confusing.
2. It encourages bad behavior.
3. It is gutless and passive aggressive.

You would be amazed how quick a few inches of snow get blown away!! and I don't mean the left over little bits. My neighbour actually cleared the driveway in the first pass just using the leadfblower.. it was a backpack type thing. Of course some skill is required.. you have to aim strategically so it would blow back and 2 it is far enough so it won't melt.
The 3 lane 100m driveway was cleared under 15 minutes.

Man being Chinese sometimes I'm quite embarrassed because we are probably the worst if not one of the worst when it comes to hoarding free shit. Some do it stealth styles but some have no fucking shame especially the older ones.
There was the Alaskan ice melt stuff earlier today around 445pm at HD by Gilmore Station. Got there at a good time and waited around for about 20 minutes for them to unload the pallet etc. People showed some civility in lining up but once the lady cut open the bulk packaging everyone's inner primate revealed themselves. Not quite as savage as the American Black Friday videos but for something that isn't really a life or death situation it was surprising to see people's manners go out the window.

Most of you probably now have some experience driving in ice / snow condition.. time to look into your car's traction system.
eg The first car I have that have modern contraction control is a BMW MZ3, it only retards throttle and pretty much it (since it is a manual). My latest car is a X6 and the traction control has evolved quite a bit, it now have steering, wheel, brake sensors, not to mention yaw, throttle, gearbox etc.
My point is since the winter driving condition will persist for another few weeks, it will be worth while to look into your particular traction control systems' details eg which sensors do your car has? and quirks in order to maximize the utility of the system. eg when you loose traction, you stop on the brake to get ABS kick in = freaking useless. You should have the intelligence to go a slow as condition allows in the first place.
There are certain cases where I think Traction control can be disabled for older cars.. ones that only retard throttle and lower gear shifts.. If you are reading this, you should know to be really gentle on the throttle, so I rather to have full authority rather than a delayed reaction.. However the modern your car is, the less likely you want to disable your traction control.
As I have said before, practice practice practice.. the Overflow lot at Coquitlam Central Centre (west of Rona) looks like a perfect place!! ;)

I've only gone through one jug of Alaskan Melt so far this season and that's only because the sifter top popped loose and I dumped a bunch of salt on the ground by accident. I have a relatively large driveway (six car capacity, plus garage) that's on a 20* uphill angle. I bought studded tires specifically because of that angle and the lack of run up speed :lol Even so, people just need to learn how to clear snow properly. I also have a push shovel and a shoveling, er, shovel. Oh, and an actual spade shovel to help move the heavy crap when the plow blocks my driveway at 3am. No leaf blower, but my corn broom does wonder with powder snow.

Panic and chaos at some fire halls in Van city today.
Panic and chaos as free salt is handed out at some Vancouver fire halls - NEWS 1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2017/01/05/panic-chaos-free-salt-handed-vancouver-fire-halls/)
Free salt is now white gold, baby! :lawl:
It has been another chaotic day at some fire halls around Vancouver as people scrambled ahead of those in line to in order to snag some free salt being handed out by the city.
Yesterday, the offer caused people to take more than they were allowed, traffic tie-ups around the fire halls and, of course, frustration when the city ran out of what some are now calling ‘white gold.’
The City of Vancouver says there are two deliveries of salt to 10 fire halls and it’s asking those who need it to only take one small bucket’s worth — not two as previously stated or a garbage can full, like some may have hoped.
David waited for two hours at the fire hall on Prince Albert Street and he was left disappointed because he claims people jumped to the front of the line when the salt was dumped in the street. “I can imagine if this was an earthquake and we’re out of food and water and the United Nations delivered food — people would kill each other over that. Imagine that. This is only salt and people are just jumping in line.”
The confusion seemed to persist — many didn’t know where the line was, while others decided there was no line or order. “It’s like you throw a bunch of stuff out in the open and originally there was a line and then within 30 seconds everybody went crazy.”

The city doesn't care who does it.. if you don't do it, they just give you a citation.. then everyone at the house is in trouble. If someone fell and sue well everyone will have to find lawyers.. BTW it is the occupants' responsibility not the landlord's.
It is your responsibility to figure out who is responsible to do chores. eg The city doesn't care who pays the city tax as long as someone pays it.
Off topic, if anyone can chime in, if there's 2 tenants (families), one upstairs and one in basement, who's responsible for the sidewalk?
Would that fall back on the landlord since there's more than one tenant?
Thanks

City should also give every Canadian a detached house while they are at it.
Sure City should clear sidewalks that don't have property in front it.. but if there are.. that's the job for the occupants / business.. if the city do it for them, they should bill them.

I didn't want to say it but I have to after seeing that video but its funny how you don't see a single white person going crazy and being rude like that...
As a CBC, I would yell at a Chinese elder for being so rude, selfish, and greedy, in no particular order, if I saw a group of them lining up in front of a fire hall with 3, 4, or 5 empty buckets each.
It's salt, people! They treat it like white gold!

I'm asking as a landlord myself. Just trying to figure out how to convey the responsibilities to the tenant. The tenant on the main floor have entrances in the front and back of the house, the tenant in the basement have entrance only at the back. It would seem it would make more sense to ask the tenant on the main floor to clear the sidewalk, but I'm not sure if they're happy that they are the only one asked to do it.

I would let them both know that it is all of their responsibilities to clear the walkways, then it's up to them to tag team or take turns or rock-paper-scissors, whatever. IMO if you specifically delegate one person to do it, then it's all on you if they get upset. If you tell both of them, then they have to decide between each other. They are cool with each other, right?

Tell both tenants it's their responsibility and not the landlords (assuming you don't live there). That way, if there's issues with the city or someone else, you can blame both tenants instead of just 1 :lawl: :fullofwin:
And just because the downstairs tenant's entrance is in the back, doesn't mean they don't use the sidewalk.

I did some searching, and actually, I'm not quite sure if it's really the tenants' responsibility, at least in a multi-unit complex (house)
Policy Guidelines Listed Alphabetically - Province of British Columbia (http://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/housing-tenancy/residential-tenancies/tools-and-resources/policy-guidelines/policy-guidelines-listed-alphabetically)
Landlord & Tenant – Responsibility for Residential Premises
The landlord is responsible for cutting grass, shovelling snow and weeding flower
beds and gardens of multi-unit residential complexes and common areas of
manufactured home parks.
I'm assuming here that a "multi-unit residential complex" also refers to a house with more than one tenant (family)

The hourly report on the Weather Network is usually pretty accurate.. it seems <1 cm for most of the night.
Remember because of the data and computing resources we have.. we don't have that accurate weather forecast outside 3 days.. (or you can check the EU ones which is good for 5 days because they use more data).
Since it will be sub zero again tomorrow.. there is no need to lay down salt if you are early to clear snow. You don't want the snow to melt and refreeze, and just throw the snow to the side with your shovel tomorrow.. easy peasy. For those who have ice problems.. work on it during the day after the sun has been on the ice for a while, since the ice melt underneath you will have a easier time breaking them up.

One of my coworkers is a bylaw officer and I had this same question last week that I asked him. He said it's a grey area, unless it has been stated in the lease that the tenant will be the ones responsible for cutting grass and keeping side walks clear then they'd have no incentive to go and do it themselves. After listening to him go on for a while he finally said he'd consider the landlord to be the responsible one.
I shovel my front sidewalk (only one on my block) and have the back lane cleared just in front of my driveway.
http://www.bacasafety.com/img/cache/GMCTCPB-450-450.jpg
I used the chisel end of one of these style bars and it's a very heavy bar. All I needed to do was stab it on the ice and it would crack it. After a couple hundred stabs I had cleared the entire lane way. a few houses down from me there was an asian man and his wife watching me go at it. He saw the end result and the next day he had what looked like a brand new axe that he was swinging into the ice on the ground.

60 in. Lining Pry Bar | Princess Auto (http://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/60-in-lining-pry-bar/A-p8277295e)
More or less the same as mine. Mines a 6' bar that's quite heavy. They come in different weights, the bigger it is the more tiring it'll be to lift and stab but it'll be a lot easier than using a tiny little narrow one that only weighs 5lbs.
Stab the ground all over with the chisel, lay the chisel on an angle on a piece of the asphalt and just keep pushing it forwards and it'll split the ice up to the point where you can take a shovel and easily scoop it up and toss it to the side.

That's going to be a tough one given that you want to do it now.
Have you tried calling around?
Maybe Costco?

Ditto, I was at Costco a couple days ago and the tire department was still busy as hell. Likely to be the same at other places like Kal Tire etc but then again if you can find a place with stock you could get a garage to install them since they are not as busy.

I can't believe what a little snow does to this city. From people ready to kill each other for a bag of free fucking salt, to the people acting like they were personally molested by their neighbour due to ice on their sidewalk....
This city is full of fucking idiots.
RS is a car club. Wouldn't it be great if somehow we were able to order salt and shovels for our members? I get emails from Global Industrial and they have salt and shovels in stock. Not for long, probably. Anyway, probably a logistical nightmare, but not impossible. Members place orders, RS charges a nominal fee which gets donated to a worthy charity and to cover costs. Members pick up their orders in a civilized manner at a sponsors' place of business. In a perfect world, of course.

Makes sense, I broke down and decided to get Nokians this morning for the ILX that has been hibernating. The truck is nice and whatnot, but not very fuel efficient.
Dad borrowing son's EV isn't cool, either.
It'll probably not snow for the rest of the year. Kind of like washing the car and it starts to rain within a few hours, lol.
Sitting at Kal Tire, bored out of my gourd. RS helping kill time........

I was hoping we'd be more civil like the fort mac fire last year and less like American Black Friday videos
looks like we may be more on the latter side of the spectrum when it comes to aid

This is why everyone should have their own go bag and emergency kits ready for a potential natural disaster. When that hits Vancouver, the whole city will be a shit show, so make sure you have your own supplies on hand.

I'll help a bit with your boredom, going with snow or all-weather WRG3?
All weather. Saves from buying new rims and TPMS sensors. I now have a set of OEM tires with 26000 km on them. Potato garden in spring, lol.

I broke down and finally installed my Blizzak DM-V2s on the truck. It already had KO2s on it, but the KO2s don't do so well on ice. Great in slush, soft snow and packed snow though!
Have to buy a 3 ton or better jack, I paid a tire shop to do the seasonal changeover this time. Last year I did it with borrowed tools but moved away from the friend who has the big jack for the truck.

does costco sell an all-weather tire? google could not answer this for me so i'm thinking no.
presumably all weather is a little softer than all seasons so they might wear quicker?
any real downsides to using them year round?

the snow and weather demonstrate how easily a totalitarian dictatorship could easily take hold even in a society we consider to be civilized.
even a minor inconvenience is enough to send people fighting and harassing each other over resources, and people are reporting each other to the gov't over minor things like not clearing your walk
imagine if a real disaster or calamity struck lol

We sure don't. We do not like the idea of doing things half asses to be honest. An all weather is okay in everything, but good at nothing. A dedicated snow tire would kick its ass.

All weather tires typically have all season tread patterns with extra siping but use winter tire compound.
They are aimed at people who do not drive their cars often enough to justify buying two sets of tires (<10k per year)
There should not be any downside to the all weather tires as long as your car is an appliance and not a weekend toy.

On my way home from work today, saw some guy using a propane torch to get rid of all the ice on his front sidewalk
