Chonky slices of wet snow in Richmond. Nothing going to be sticking I'd presume.
Snow!!!!! I am so fucking happy right now. I feel like a kid. The kind of year we had, this really makes me want to dance. Snoopy dancing kind of happy.
Reality will hit when I have to shovel the shit when and if it sticks............... but even that is fun. I shit you not. I like shovelling snow so much I shovel my neighbours driveway. Well, he is like 85+ years old, so I have to do it for him.
I would love to see a White Christmas again. They don't happen that often.
I've seen 4 maybe 5 in my lifetime here in Vancouver.

2008 was the last white Christmas I can remember. It snowed at least 12 to 16 inches the days leading up to the 25th.

Not a fan of being on the road with drivers here.
I also enjoy a good shovel, looking fwd to that this afternoon.
i feel like we've had a couple white christmases in vancouver in the past 10 years
Fixt...............
To be a "white christmas, there has to be at least 2 cm of snow on the ground (7:00 am on Xmas day). In Britain, it has to be snowing on that day.
To me, the rule should be snowfall of at least 2CM on Xmas day. Leftover snow from previous days should not count.
So, maybe 6 in my lifetime of nearly 7 decades of living here in Vancouver.

Lol, I'm not worried about this one I'm worried about future in Jan/Feb. I have our mechanic sourcing me out some tires I can't believe I'm even going there hah.
Edit: Ok bought some snow tires he's going to grab them for me when he's in Seattle next. Goodyear Winter Command for my truck, hopefully I'll have them next time it snows lol. I knew my driveway and street were steep and when I bought the house I was like this might be a problem but then I was like I have 4 wheel drive how bad can it be? I went out to get salt for driveway by the time I got back there was a fair bit of snow and I barley made it up my street I could only laugh.

Snow has finally stopped, but most of Aldergrove is without power. Mine just went out about 40 min ago when my phone was at 11%. Charging in the car right now.
Growing up in Kamloops, it really is amazing how fragile the electrical systems are down here. A little snow or wind and it goes out. So many above-ground grid systems.
This would come in handy during a power outage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WvzB3khLHs

They aren’t bad on the main roads from north van to downtown. It’s like 1 degree so they are more wet than icy if they are a main route. The sidewalks are fucking slippery, so I imagine if you need to get very far above sea level they might get dicey. I didn’t slide anywhere at all and even gave it a couple tester throttles to see. Looks like south of us got it worse yesterday with the snow though. Lots of accidents yesterday evening in the Surrey/Langley area.

If it doesn't snow and stick in Squamish, something's wrong, yes?
BTW, how do you say, "snow" in the Squamish language? I've always wAndered. I know you make your home there and you're not part of the Squamish people, but the language is pretty hard to translate in written English.
In the Inuit/Aleut language there are multiple words used to describe snow.

No idea, even though we were taught Coast Salish in the school I grew up in, that was so many moons ago.
I did not know Squamish was a group of indigenous peoples with their own language. I recall someone telling me Sto-Lo was the largest of groups. Nishga, Coast Salish, Musqueam, etc. are smaller then? When is a tribe no longer a tribe? So confusing, but intriguing nonetheless.
Maybe sub groups?

There are many tribes, though some share common language with slight dialects. Coast Salish, for example, is a language spoken by many tribes on the East Coast of Vancouver Island and also the Squamish Nation and others here on the West Coast.

Driving in Vancouver this morning sucked because even the main roads that I travelled on do not appeared to be plowed. It was past 9am this morning, and whatever tracks there were on the road is made from cars driving over the snow.
I read last night that the City was preparing its road crew for keeping the arterial roads clear. I guess the main roads that I drove on weren't considered arterial enough?
I love this snow. Weekly shopping with the kids was a breeze. Nobody at No Frills on Broadway and Kent's Kitchen as deserted. Even Manpuku was empty.

It's cuz they ran out from a week ago lol
Apparently, and according to Mainland, the brine was going to work. It didn’t rain and the conditions were ideal. Somehow, it didn’t work well in certain area. The streets I drive on were clear with no issues. I also noticed the snow in my neighborhood was the super light, powdery stuff. I salted (Alaskan Ice Melt) after shoveling and wow, what a difference. Clear and dry as a bone.

Driveway............ sidewalks were all done. In the end, since my oldest son was coming over, I did end up shovelling the driveway and spreading a layer of ice melt.

You can't be Amurican. Your https://fi.somethingawful.com/images/smilies/loleggplant.png is way too big. If you're not afraid to shove some fancy water out of your way so you can go live your life, you're doing better than a fair chunk of the USA.
Apparently my state has made the news up there because we've been crippled by less snow than I've seen come down in October/November back in the Lower Mainland. Based on how people are acting here because of all of this, if some of these Good Ol' Boys saw how it looks out on the Coquihalla they'd soak through their Pampers.
In my specific neighbourhood we've got a centimeter of ice care-of some frozen rain, which is dangerous for people who wear shorts in December and drive giant pickup trucks, but for us expats; we're doing just fine.
For a state that prides itself on rugged independence, its sure not doing well with a few flakes on the ground. Even coming from the warmest part of Canada, I'm Nanook of the fucking North at a time like this.
MG1 could come here and be king of the Lone Star with his snow shovel. He'd be the only one in the state with one!

Number 1 rule. Never rely on city to do anything. Don't people remember it was just like 5 years ago that we had snow, and the city decided to clean bike paths before roads? lol.
And if people are struggling to drive with 1-2 inches of unplowed snow, they should just take transit because their car or their abilities to drive in snow suck.

Also, last chance to hit the gym if you're hankering to go, if you can make it there in one piece tomorrow.

What's more infuriating is that there was no warning at all. They should have signs way before Alex Fraser on ramps to tell people to detour to Hwy 17, the interchange is a good example of where.
Everyone's just waiting on Nordel to get by, as per usual on a stormy day. Just to find out AF is closed.

Can't really blame engineers since the bridge was built in 1984. Still better than Port Mann which was built in 2006. They should have at least thought of ice bombs in the 2000s. Good thing is the cables are on the side vs the port Mann on which the cables cut across the lanes.

The worst part of people not cleaning their roof, is the 50lb of ice on top stopping it from flying off. The when they actually get to highway speed, and it finally lifts off, it becomes quite the heavy flying object. I never bothered cleaning my roof anywhere else in Canada, but you have too here. It becomes ice immediately and refreezes. Everywhere else it blows off at 10km/h.

Burnaby's standard can vary depending on what they use to install the light (ie: metal pole or bc hydro wooden pole) if it's on a metal pole they'll be placed approximately 50 meters apart if it's bc hydro's then 215 meters is acceptable. If you want more lights installed, ie: the ones on metal pole so that it's 50m apart, you need to get your neighbours to pool money together and pay the city to install them.
I emailed the city one time asking about this because my gf's whole block didn't have any lights. The only lights were at the intersections which were about 150m apart, so it's acceptable by their standards.

Coming from Vancouver I'm pretty shocked how poorly lit Burnaby is - Vancouver claims 95% coverage with street lights (not sure how they calculate this) while in my neck of the woods (North of Central Park to Burnaby General) I can't believe how many streets have zero lighting. Some parks too. It's just bad public safety - everything from pedestrians walking home safely to drivers seeing people when it rains.
The cost is trivial per homeowner (I'd pay 10x the $27/yr they'd charge me) but it's stupid b/c this is a city wide public safety issue that shouldn't be left to choice and wouldn't address the broader issue. The city runs a 20%+ surplus each year ($100m) and has a reserve fund of over a billion dollars - surely they can spare $10m a year to put some lights in. They found the money ($4.8m) to swap all their lights to LEDs
yep, either the people on the city block fork it up for the light, or if there's a new development going, the city may try to jam it down their throat to pay for it as a req. of development permit :lawl: :lol
bcrdukes
12-27-2021, 11:24 AM
I'm not sure exactly how much a street light costs but I know from personal experience, my neighbour's tree destroyed a city lamp post on our block and they were responsible for coughing up the cost to pay for it. The city sent them a bill in the range of $10,000 - $12,000. That was just to remove and replace it and that's as much as I know.

Need to make sure you’re there to stop your kid from going straight into traffic. It’s not crowded at all. Come to think of it, most of the secondary schools in Burnaby have huge hills. The one by Gaglardi. Hell, even North Burnaby Secondary has a few nice slopes. I used to take my children to the hill at VCC and the one by Knight and 33rd. Good times. not sure where you are, but Vancouver didn't pickup the green bin. Probably the worst time to not pickup the green bin when it's Christmas and everyone is generating lots of compost garbage.
My green bin is completely full and it's still 3 days until the next pick up.

Yeah, they didn't pickup our green bin as well but they announced that they weren't, the garbage was just missed.

For us, the cancelled green bin pick up is still something we can handle since it'll at least get picked up the following week. The missed garbage pick up, on the other hand, is gonna be disastrous. The next garbage pick up isn't until 2 weeks later (10 days from now), and you just know that is gonna be ugly for a lot of households, including mine.
The really sucky thing is -- my garbage was supposed to get picked up last Wed and there wasn't even that much snow accumulation, and CoV has already indicated that City staff were cancelling green bin pick up to focus on garbage collection. But even then, garbage pick up did not happen. CoV then emailed us to leave our garbage bins out for the following day if it didn't get picked up on Wed, and of course by Thur, that's when the super heavy snowfall has accumulated overnight.
Garbage collection and arterial snow removal are what I'd consider to be pretty basic and essential municipal gov services. And even then, CoV is dropping the ball on it. FailFish

Yeah it was a plow, watched him come up the street.
As for the garbage I'd take it to the dump myself but the box of my truck is still full of snow, was shovelling it into the box and I don't have room for the bin lol.

We generate significant amount of green bin waste because of the kid and we cook lots at home.
The garbage bin can be a month and it wouldn't matter too much to us, even with the diaper waste.
What absolutely HAS to be picked up for us is the recycling. We have two cats and they eat canned food and my son goes through a ton of yogurt, we fill up the blue bin very quickly, even when we stacked small containers inside big ones.

City of Vancouver not having a full sized blue bin is a complete joke. Makes me toss a lot of shit straight into the garbage. Sorting 3-4 different types of items and then not having them picked up because they weren’t in a separate bag? Fuck off.

Vancouver still makes you sort it!?! Delta/Richmond smartened up years ago.
All plastic/metal or whatever into one blue bin. All paper/cardboard into one bag. All garbage in bin, all organic in another. No need to sort types of paper or types of plastic/metal

You just described what Vancouver has been doing for at least the past 10 years. Unless things changed in the last 2 years, I moved out to Burnaby now. But it's basically the same as described above as well.
The last time we had to sort out paper was when we still had blue bags for newspaper which felt like eons ago. I even started using the blue bag for regular paper/cardboard at one point cause someone jacked my yellow bag and CoV always accepted it. I don't recall ever needing to sort out different types of plastic/metal though.

The blue bin is relatively small. You can easily buy more blue bins from CanadianTire or HomeDepot. Sometimes I have 3 blue bins out there and they accept it, in Burnaby anyway. As long as the correct items are in there.

The snow is really coming down hard here in Coquitlam. Had 3-4 inches overnight, and it's been snowing heavily for the last 2+ hours (at least 1 inch).

Environment Canada’s forecast for tomorrow night is for heavy snow. Clear and sunny during the day.
Then it begins…..

Once again totally amazed at the amazing job crews doing in South Surrey. My street has been plowed 2X already tonight LOL. I am a born and raised Calgarian, living here for 5 years now. Never in my life have I seen such great plow service. Without fail I know these guys will be back a few times by morning.

FML they aren't picking green bin again in Vancouver. It's going to be 3 and a half weeks between collection.

That's the thing with people and their all seasons or god forbidden, summers.
Didn't cause an accident, ok. Sure, but you slowed down traffic flow and drove extremely slow to compensate. GTFO.

Meanwhile just south of 16th none of our roads here are touched :(. You must also be on a main road or where all the townhomes are?
the great salt shortage is happening again.
most of the cheaper 20kg bags of salt are sold out all over, you have to buy those premium brands that cost 3x as much if you want any.
this morning i was watching the stock of 20kg salt at canadian tire. it went from 550 bags to 0 bags in about 90 minutes.
the good thing is that it seems like temps will become mild next week, but with the snow dump happening tonight i think there's gonna be a big scramble tomorrow to get road salt.
