avatar very much related to your reaction to the plowed roads this morning?
About 4" of fresh powder where I live in Coquitlam. Took nearly an hour to get up the street, living on the bottom of a hilled cul-de-sac did not work out well for my Conti DWS on a FWD car. Fiancée has the 4WD with Blizzaks which managed much better than I did. Main roads are all fine on the way out to South Cambie area.

There was only about 3 cm of snow in my area of East Van last night.
-fairly easy commute to work today. :D

South Van, another EASY commute along Marine Dr. Must be people taking transit? Absolutely no congestion at Knight St. bridge, I can really get to like these conditions.

I had to drive from East Van to my doctors office in North Delta, and then to work in Richmond this morning. Used the Alex Fraser both times, no issues. I suppose if they view it as a safety risk, they have to close it until they get it cleared.

Too late for me now. My usual 30-35 min commute home took 80 mins today. What I don't get is why they gave southbound traffic the counter flow lane thru the tunnel. From what I saw, southbound was moving smoothly while northbound was at a standstill.

Actually, can you, or another mod, move the post elsewhere? It really doesn't belong here. I just posted it because of 320icar's comment about wife taking so long to get ready. It made me think of her.
Call new thread in VOT, RS Member's Loss or something. Tragedies hit everyone. Parents death, etc. It does help to talk about it. I kept my silence and it was killing me.
I can do whatever you need me to do. Let me get that going now.

Do me a favour, 320icar. Give the missus and extra, extra long hug. Tell her you love her. My wife of 31+ years passed away over a year and a half ago. Not a day goes by I don't think about her. I visit her every day at the cemetery. All the things I should have done when we were still together. I have so many regrets............
She was my best friend and a golden moral compass to me.
Not sure why I'm spilling my feelings out on RS, of all places, and in this thread, but maybe it will finally help in the healing process.
Although she is gone, she will always, always be a big part of who I am. She found my sense of humour weird, but she stuck with me with all my faults, and guided me.
I try to keep my chin up. Keeping busy and humour does help. And no, I will not go to therapy............. RS is my therapy.
All you RS'er with loved ones - NEVER take anyone for granted. One day, you will be without. Hopefully it will never happen to you. I wanted to grow old with the girl who stole my heart. Didn't get the opportunity. I did, however, spend a good 3 decades with her......... actually, I've known her all my life. She grew up two blocks away from me.
Anyway........... keep on keeping on.
And where's the salt, goddamn it!
Actually... She's my gf of 3 years, and I have a ring in my backpack right now as she's trying on rental ski boots...
Wish me luck RS

Oh Alaskan brand of salt is not NaCl (like Windsor).. it is CaCl2 + urea mixture.. So now you know.. out of salt? just piss on the pavement. Oh CaCl2 is from limestone, it absorbs moisture but it also known effect to make male balls fall off.. ;) go easy with that stuff.
Honestly whether the salt will "hurt" your concrete really depends on how much you use AND what shape your concrete is in, don't use it if your concrete has cracks, you don't want the snow to melt and water to seep through your concrete cracks and expand... ALSO You are not supposed to use the salt to melt the snow so you don't need to shovel.. (I saw a guy just dump bags of salt on his driveway and walk away).
Oh pro tip.. if you do apply salt, do make sure there is a path for the water to run off, if not then you will get some black ice, when the ice eventually reforms.

Maybe I am old and crotchety.. but the guy reminds me of the phrase "Millennials are such snowflakes". So much outrage!
Yes the Comcast guy caused a traffic hazard.. but isn't it the drivers' responsibility to drive at the speed suitable to the weather condition? eg Complaining if your car rear ended the person in front because you didn't leave enough space in front of you?
Pretty sure the video will clear Comcast more than anything. Wide open road, go fast, no snow tires..

Eight skids of Alaskan now at Home Depot on Henning Drive. Limit of ten bags. Weird but 10 kg cheaper than 20 kg. Also 400 bags at Terminal.
Edit: Just me and one more guy at 6:00 am. I guess everyone's got em now. I'm pretty much set. Just gotta rotate the stock, lol. And, my balls are feeling funny right now.
I think I may have met you MG1, the one guy I saw said exactly the same thing.

The only complaint I have on the Comcast guys is that they are taking safety for granted.
Yes, people are driving too fast for conditions. There is ice just over the top of the hill and most of the wrecks were caused by the drivers making mistakes and panic braking as well as not having snow tires.
But for the Comcast guys, know that that is happening, it is in their best interest to put out more cones because all it takes is for the black pickup to swerve right instead of left and it is game over for them since they are up high in the cherry picker.
I think I may have met you MG1, the one guy I saw said exactly the same thing.

Pallets load of Stifo (10kg) $4.79 at the Coq Canadian Tire for about $5 a bag (looks like they still have 5-6 pallets left in the container and another truck load of bigger bags). No limit, however I don't think people can push anything more than a dozen bags. It looks like there is at least 150 - 200bags / pallet. They just dump them by the pallet at the front door, so just grab them there and pay inside (don't bother looking inside).
The management there is not good. It seems they don't anticipate the crowd (or don't care). The line up is through the front door, the heating will go through the roof for them. The supervisor Marlene? seems slow.. only 2 tills open.
Not sure why people buy salt in 20Kg bags.. you want to spread the salt around, not dump it all on one place. Use your salt strategically!! Also If you dual use your garden spreader, rinse it out or next year you will be scratching your head why your plants are not growing.
Oh MG1: chemical castration with CaCl2.. You still have them but they wither and die within you ;)

$10 for 20kg is not bad https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/bnc/grd/5918546284.html
I find it hard to justify for the Alaskan brand name.. salt has the same freezing point sure they have fancy colours.. But all ice melters melt ice at the same temperature, you still need to clear the melted puddle after it melted to prevent refreezing.

No, being weird is not a crime. I chalk it up to lack of sensitivity of the officers.. When you get to be that age, you see things more sentimentally and the stories tend to be rambling and long; eg talking about things you used to do with people who passed away is common. However that kind of talk, tends to set of the spidey senses of police officers especially inexperienced ones who might get stuck on a bad shift (not to mention towards end of a shift too!).
I also understand the problem with Terminal HD management too, since it is a pretty high crime area. It is better to call it in be safe than sorry than to send an employees in harms way.. especially at a dark parking lot.
Language is not an issue, since he was Canadian (worked for a previous generation of developers who built Vancouver). I just think perspectives were just different and misunderstanding. HD called VPD about someone in the parking lot. VPD showed up and my friend tried to regaled them of tales of the past, thought he was making friends etc. VPD officier deemed it is better to bring him in to St Paul's..

I was reading the comments on Reddit and someone said that those vehicles needed the speed in order to make it over the hill or risk getting stuck and sliding back down. It doesn't look like much of a hill to me, but indeed you do need momentum on snow/ice covered hills. They should have had signs and cones laid out over that hill and in front of the truck as well, with sign people to control traffic.

It's unfortunate, but most people in society do what is told of them and no more. The workers stated that they only need 1 cone per 10 mph, so that is what they put out, no more no less. Unfortunately, the majority of society has very limited critical thinking skills and do not know how to apply them on a daily basis. Yes, your manual says to lay out a certain number of cones, but obviously you are a hazard for incoming traffic and should be considering geographic and weather conditions.

I've been loving the sun but can't wait for rain and milder temps...
Issued at 16:17 Thursday 15 December 2016
Snow and rain this weekend for the south coast.
A Pacific front will reach the British Columbia coast late Saturday. Snow will develop in the evening over the south coast and continue Sunday.
A second stronger Pacific front will approach Sunday afternoon with snow continuing. The Arctic air that has been with us for nearly two weeks will finally be flushed out by milder Pacific air. Snow will gradually change to rain beginning Sunday night. As usual, snowfalls will be highly variable with higher amounts expected inland and over higher terrain.
For Metro Vancouver and most south coast areas a complete change-over to rain is likely by midday Monday. In eastern sections of the Fraser Valley and from Squamish to Whistler the temperatures will remain low enough that snow may persist all day Monday. During the change there will be a risk of freezing rain for the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, and inland communities of Vancouver Island including Port Alberni.
Moderate rainfall in combination with melting snow could cause localized flooding on Monday.

The alcohol can cause the wiper blades on your car to dry out faster, but you might be only using that spray solution for month or two.
The only potential drawback I see would probably be buying another set of wipers for the year.

I used to drive to work and parked on the street (I don't drive anymore and I have a parking garage as well now). Are you trying to defrost, or defog? Can't you just scrape the frost off?
I find that if the car is sitting still, it'll take forever to defog. It's a slightly dangerous idea, but if where you park is a parking lot at work, and you can be reasonably sure that it's safe and you aren't going to hit anything, drive around slowly in the parking lot with the fan set to max on defog. It'll clear in a few minutes opposed to 10+. It doesn't even need to be fast, it's just so it can get some clean air through the vents.
That trick beats any chemical I've used. Though I do find that the defrost/vent setting on my Mazda is quite good. Our new Mini is horrible at clearing windows.
EDIT: I've tried those Rain-x anti fog chemicals, they just make it so the water doesn't bead, you still get a nice sheet wet glass.

I use the -40 Rain X washer fluid. What I do to speed up defrosting the outside windshield is to flip the wipers up and then spray the washers. Give it about 10 seconds and the frost melts or turns to slush. I've been too lazy to fill a sprayer with the washer fluid. I keep saying I should so I could spray the side/rear windows.
I've found that if you Rain X coat the side windows and mirrors, the frost comes off easier when you scrape it too.
I just put on the Frostblocker and have no worries. I live in a pretty safe neighbourhood, so not too worried about it being stolen. Got it at Costco last year. It even comes with side mirror covers, but I don't put them on. Mirror defrost works fast on my Ridgeline.

I bought one of these from Canadian Tire last year.
Surprisingly works very well. Tried to share this with a few friends and they laughed cause of it's simplicity and resemblance to a typical funnel.
Oh well, I can scrape off my windows in 1/4 of the time they take with their standard scrapper. I tried.

Where's the snow....?
Dumping down pretty good here in Squamish, already about 2" on the ground. I imagine the S2S will be a gong show of slid out cars with all seasons coming from the city.
Probably invented by a guy who was desperate for a scraper and found a funnel in the garage. Reminds me of the new Shreddies mini. It's diamond shaped, not square.
For some reason, I love the sound of frost being scraped off the rear glass of a vehicle. Not snow...........frost.
Checking out the neighbour's roof from the kitchen window of my house, no new snow in North Burnaby.

Snow has really lightened here in Squamish. I drove my wife to work, there is only one lane plowed on the S2S through town, I imagine the rest of the highway is similar.
kingsway is not as bad as news1130 said to be, just slush
whole downtown is basically unplowed
:lawl:
retards still out there - got a venza braking for a green light and golf pulling out of the gas station taking 2 lanes even though the first lane had no snow and no traffic.

Road conditions are not good this morning, cities did not snow plow or salt the roads. Some areas are a little bit slippery but shouldn't be a problem if you have snow tires.

Posted 19 minutes ago on Environment Canada's site:
A Pacific front over the British Columbia coast is still giving snow to the lower mainland this morning. The Arctic air that has been with us for nearly two weeks is finally being flushed out by milder Pacific air, however the intensity of the precipitation is causing it to still fall as snow in most areas. The snow will change over to rain this morning, although higher elevations and those farther inland will see some delay in this transition. The moderate rainfall in combination with melting snow could cause localized flooding today. Culverts and catch basins should be kept clear. ### Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ec.tempetepacifique-pacificstorm.ec@canada.ca or tweet reports to #BCStorm.

North on Oak from 41st started to get slushy. Very slow stop and go traffic as C&W hospital campus entrance was backed up and took up the right lane from everyone wanting to turn.

Made it up the slushy unplowed street by throwing it in reverse putting more weight on the front wheels. Prior to that I made it up about 10 feet mostly via the one tire fire method. I'm glad the warmer air is coming back in, otherwise my DWS are toast after this season. Highway 1 is moving surprisingly well where I'm sitting right now with a good view of just after the Willingdon exit

I do not understand how some drivers think they can drive up hill on Grandview highway to go past Fraser Street in east Van without snow tires.
-saw a bunch of cars with emergency flashers on as they attempt to go up the hill on Grandview highway towards Fraser. It didn't end well. :lawl:

I just make a right turn to go through a side street and make a left turn on to Broadway to avoid that gongshow. :troll:

holy shit
i ragret taking Barnet to work today
it's a fucking gong show cus the lights are out at the end of it.
was so tempted to make a left on the street just before Barnet turns to Hastings, the one with the no left turn restriction cus I'd been stuck in parking lot traffic for 30+ mins. This was at around 830 am and the restriction was until 9am. I thought meh, cops couldn't possibly be around. But decided to suck it up and abide by the rules because Murphy's law. Guy behind me seems to have hesitated as well but he decided to go for it. 30 seconds later i see a marked SUV make a left and and turn on the lights.

wtf happened with hwy 1 this morning?!?
nothing was plowed and there was several inches of wet snow over hardpacked ice. i was forced to go eastbound trying to make for the pt. mann bridge because there was a jacknifed semi blocking the patullo. the burnaby lake stretch was the worst. if you lose your death grip on the steering wheel and catch a frozen rut you find yourself changing lanes whether you want to or not, which seems to be what happened to someone unfortunate on the westbound side, where traffic was a standstill at 6am when i passed by all those pretty emergency lights... very festive. not.
