i was warming up my car this morning, and dude with an x-terra and park plates drove up to me and asked if i needed help getting out. Thanks dude! I was ok though and didn't require any assistance. Very grateful for the gesture, i'm glad we still have such kind people around. If you're on RS, thank you again!

I'm in Vancouver and the snow came down hard just after midnight but eased off around 3am so decided to shovel and salt the sidewalk because I was worried about icing when I got up. Surprisingly most of the snow has melted from the sidewalks and the side streets are clean.

The GF and I decided to do some snow driving in the Jeep and noticed tonnes of cars going up. Ended up leading a pack of cars up Westwood as we were creating decent tire lanes up the hill for them to get contact. Worked for most vehicles but a lot of them couldn't make it up. Unfortunately our tow ropes are on the Coast so we couldn't do much to help people get unstuck, but even if we did we wouldn't be able to tow them up the hills anyways as 90% of them had shit tires. To the point even the police and firetrucks were dodging them.

I cant recall, are all emergency vehicles servicing LML running winters?

i remember seeing new west fire trucks running chains, and many years ago VPD police cars with chains. i think ambulance do not run snow tires or chains as i was speaking with a home owner near the west end and they witnessed an ambulance trying to go up a steep hill for like 20mins.

Not all of them. The fire trucks tend to have big chunky tires with auto-chains installed. Depending on ambulance, some may have HD truck A/T tires or snow tires installed. The Pemberton ambulances have Blizzak W965's or Duratracs and the local RCMP detachment has Goodyear snow tires installed.

The Pemberton fire trucks have Michelin XDN2's. https://tirecraft.com/commercial/tires-by-brand/michelin-commercial-tires/michelin-xdn-2-truck-tires/

Special weather statements are in effect for B.C.'s South Coast as the sun moves out and more snow moves in, with the City of Vancouver under a weather warning.

Flurries are expected to start in Metro Vancouver, Whistler and the Fraser Valley, as well as on the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island, by Friday morning.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the City of Vancouver just after 11 a.m. on Thursday, valid from Friday night until Saturday morning.

It said the snow will affect road conditions and likely rush hour commutes.

Snowfall amounts in other areas will vary, with the most buildup expected at higher elevations in the Valley.

Wednesday saw light snow along the coast, with drivers in Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island running into trouble on the roads.

In Richmond alone, RCMP officers were called to 22 collisions in 24 hours after 7 p.m.

Fire crews in the Township of Langley also responded to dozens of calls. In one case, two of its own fire trucks were badly damaged after they hit black ice and rolled over.

Deputy Chief Russ Jenkins said the two trucks had been responding to a crash at 76th Avenue and Morrison Crescent when they tipped just before 7 a.m.

One firefighter was hospitalized as a precaution.

Temperatures dipped to –6 C, continuing a cold snap that prompted Vancouver officials to open three 24-hour warming centres for those without shelter earlier this week.

Can confirm. They're great for the typical Vancouver weather (very light snow, lots of rain, dry a lot of the time), but suck in the deep/icy stuff.

Drove them back to back with a pair of WS80s and Nokians, which were much better in the deep/icy stuff.

Don't WS80's wear down really quickly compared to the Xice?

I'm 90% in Metro Vancouver, with a few drives up to Whistler every year... so Xice have been fine for me. I suppose if you are going up to the interior, it might make a difference.

Yes ws80 are significantly softer and do not come with a mileage warranty. Whereas the x-ice xi3 does come with a mileage warranty (I believe the only full winter tire that does)

Yep - they last about half as long from what I'm hearing.

The XIces are particularly easy to recommend with their 60k km warranty and what I'd go with for Vancouver.

One alternative that seems to be a good balance between the two is the Conti WinterContactSI

So if someone theoretically lived in Richmond and hypothetically wanted some snow drift drone shots, how many parking lots are there which are somewhat low key? Lots of the place that may or may not have been used in the past have cement barriers and fences now

Just come out and say it. You wanna slide in a snow covered parking lot. "Hypothetically" and "theoretically" = :rukidding:

It's like, "Hey, hypothetically, where can one buy cocaine? My friend wants some from Richmond where I may or may not live. But the drug dealer's gotta be legit and no cops are around to catch one buying such said cocaine"

Thinking I may want to hit the slopes tomorrow. The only mountains I've been to since moving down here to Bowen are Whistler and Cypress. Now that I live in the valley, should I try Seymour, Grouse, or Sasquatch? Looking for the best bang for the buck experience.
Never been to Sasquatch, but between the 3 local mountains (Cyrpress, Grouse, Seymour), I like them all for slightly different reasons:

Cypress - best runs
Grouse - best view, the Cut
Seymour - cheapest of the 3, unfortunately also like their runs the least

Had to run errands but walked / took Skytrain.

Near my place, there was an elderly man on his scooter that couldn't tread through the deep snow on the sidewalk. I approached him and asked if he needed help and he said yes.

I ended up pushing him an entire city block and up a slight hill till the sidewalk was clear. I think going to the gym 4 days a week came in useful there. My shoes were caked in snow and I slipped a bit but I made it happen. He was grateful.

We pulled the drivers off the road around 12:30 I think. Coquitlam was a gong show. A bunch of us (4 of our store employees, a construction worked from Marcon, a pedestrian and one of our customers) helped a lady in a Mercedes who was stuck in the middle of the intersection at Smith and Clarke.

Lady had no idea what she was doing and was running all seasons. I get that something like that is frustrating to other drivers, but just shake your head and move along. No need to hold up traffic swearing at her and telling her to fuck off. Especially when you proceed to drive like a fucking dick afterward and nearly hit a pedestrian. Dumbass.

I'll never understand people that spend that much money on a luxury car and can't afford the extra $1000 for snow tires. The one single thing that's keeping their car safely on the road. If you can't afford to buy snow tires then don't drive.

The whole idea of "well it only snows 2 times a year" is complete bullshit, because all it takes is for one car to cause a major accident in this kind of weather.

It's not that they can't afford them.

It's either

A) they just just don't know anything about tires;

B) they try to save money on things they should buy.

For me, $1200 tires is better than possibly crashing my car, totalling it and injuring myself and others.

And winter tires help out even when there is no snow. The compound is softer and grids better in cold weather.

And lastly, most no-season tires are shit in summer as well if you do spirited driving. Better to just have 2 dedicated sets for my 8.

Gonna be a mixture of age and tires that aren't particularly great for snow. Depending on the model, some of their tires are designed more for light/compacted snow and ice, and others are set up more for deep snow.

My Nokian Hakk R2's are great on compacted snow and ice but not particularly good in deep snow, just as a reference.

bigzz786786
02-23-2018, 11:06 PM
^with the wrap there's no way to tell if its awd or rwd, if it wasn't wrapped there would be a small badge best the driver rear wheel which will say 580-2 for rwd and i think it would say 610-4 for awd, the amount of torque that thing uses makes it hard as hell to control, and i believe they come with UHP summer tires so its a lose lose. even if hey were snow tires, it would still be super hard to control that kind of car on a hill like that.

Incorrect. The 580 doesn't have badges, only the 610 does. Easiest way to tell them apart is the rear, the 580 has a larger plastic grille compared to the 610s thinner grille and lower part of the bumpers are different. Also the front bumper is different, the 580 has more of LP560 look. And finally the 580 comes with steel brakes, 610 has carbon brakes.

You know, I was driving the family SUV (with AWD) on some fairly new all seasons, and it was surprisingly easy to go anywhere -- including the totally unplowed side streets. The snow we're having right now is very easy to manoeuvre -- basically a soft and slightly powdery / damp fluffy snow. As long as you know what you are doing and how much traction you have, I'd say the snow we're getting now is as easy to drive as snowy roads get.

If you don't do spirited summer driving and you can't have 2 sets, consider all-weather tires. Those are more similar to winter tires in terms of construction and they have the snowflake symbols on them. Nokian WRG3 was pretty good when I had it for my Accord V6. We played hockey at the new rink in Aldergrove last night. It was a heck of a drive there. We passed a flipped Dodge Ram on the highway. No real issues with driving there though. Just keep the speed in check and make no sudden movements.

Tip: Wait until your windshield is warm before driving. I had to pull over this morning because even though my windshield was clear, it collected moisture as I drove and frosted over. Wiper fluid makes it worse.

Winter wiper fluid (water-propylene glycol-detergent mix) should definitely not make it worse. Winter wiper fluid generally won't freeze until -35°C or colder. Even a 2:1 water:PG ratio is good down to -18°C.

If you have summer wiper fluid or a mix of summer/winter wiper fluid, then yeah, it'll probably make things worse as it crystallizes on your windshield.

I'm using a winter fluid that's good for -39 but that's only to prevent it from freezing in the tank. Once it's sprayed on the windshield, the alcohol quickly evaporates leaving behind water that freezes.

That’s not how glycol works.

That’s not how glycol works.

You're correct, glycol would turn thick in the cold and clog lines. That's why most wiper fluids don't use it. Most wiper fluids use methanol. Glycols are used mainly for coolants and antifreeze.

This is the absolute opposite of what you should be doing. If it's cold enough you put your heat on the floor NOT on defrost. Keep your Windshield frozen and then the snow won't melt when it hits it and consequently freeze after it melts. You should be keeping your cab just warm enough to not be cold and keep the front Window frozen. When you do this the snow flakes will just blow over the car.

Berz out.

I love my EV. As long as it’s plugged in, I can remote heat the whole car. In ten minutes, all windows, except rear (for some unknown reason) is dry and toasty. When it snows, it takes a little longer.

My car has heating elements in the front for the wipers tied to the rear defroster and heated mirrors. Those elements will heat up a good third of the windshield. A lot of cars wouldn't be able to do what you're suggesting if the driver intends to use the rear defroster. I also don't want to be in a position where I need to wash dirt/salt off the windshield only to have it frosted over a few seconds later.

But on the other hand, when temp dips, your capacity/range goes down as well, no?
