k so after driving down no.4 road which is ultimately in the worst ever condition, and cambie which was better, I can say that the roads are iced up beneath the snow as I lost traction and traction control kicked in turning onto no.4 even when I was slow as fuck (tho my glk is heavy as fuck too). but yeah even winter rated tires will not do well in these roads, need studded tires. Not to mention there are still WRXes going weeee and X3s going wooo and tailgating sighs. I did not see the c-lai c classes tho thankfully.

Its -3 so its really icy. The snow that's falling isn't really making it powdery but more hardpacked icy. Usually I make out pretty well in the powder with M+S tires, but this ice is just horrible. It's still pretty safe to drive around 50 on most streets just be very aware and alert .. I hit a few patches of ice randomly in corners and had to correct it pretty quick. People are driving like completely morons on the side streets (inadvertently running stop signs, making wide ass left turns into the opposite side of the street, retarded).

Well at your own discretion. I left my truck in 2nd gear the whole way, as I approached corners/curves I just let off the gas and let the engine brake all 4 wheels down to 30 and go through them, then get back upto 50. Taking left turns is risky business. Never know if people are gonna be able to stop in time or not.

Just want to stress to anyone with snow tires that this is ice we're talking about on the roads. Not just snow. Conditions are very icy out there, and even with snow tires, that doesn't mean you should be driving like an idiot.

Just because you may be able to stop/go/maneuver doesn't mean everyone else around you can.

I was driving around at around 5pm from about Broadway & Cambie to Kingsway up to Knight Street, and even though the snow was barely covering the ground, it was about as slippery of conditions as I've driven in like 12 years. The conditions were such that the snow pretty much turned into a sheet of ice, even along the main roads.

While I was in all seasons, I was barely getting traction even on like a 2° incline on Broadway... was sad.

While home, there was an accident in the intersection of Knight & Kingsway at around 6:30pm that inconvenienced traffic for like an hour...

No she was driving .. but she has no experience driving in the snow (in her car anyways) and her cars RWD on continental all season tires ... she texted me right after she crashed .. I really wanna say "i told you so" but that'd be a dick move. I routinely go back and forth from the mountains/whistler in the winter .. while I'm no expert snow driver, but I'm sure what just happened wouldn't have if she had accepted my offer to drive her and her friends. Oh well, live and learn.

We'll see if ICBC rules her 100% at fault because of no snow tires .. I have no idea on the specifics of the accident.

Before you guys go off and say "FEMALE DRIVER!" shes actually not half bad, im actually surprised she crashed. Just inexperienced I guess/

worst thing about most of the roads is that theres actually a thin layer of snow covering a layer of ice. so you think you're fine as long as you have snow tires, then you hit a turn and fly into a curb

i was out earlier today (really early, when there was only about 1mm of snow) and i had the worst and scariest drive of my life, and i didn't even go far. my own dumbass fault though, taking a rwd car with summer tires out in any amount of snow. i'm really lucky to have arrived home fine actually. took my parents rav4 out for the rest of the day. my cars staying garaged until this snow is gone

i saw a shitload of accidents too. most seem to have been from people who were inexperienced or overconfident. like i said, because it seems like it's just snow, people think their snow tires will save them from any amount of slip

be careful out there guys. just because you're equipped with winter gear and know what you're doing, doesn't mean the person behind you does

My sister just called me driving down #1 going 65 on her way to work and she was pulled over. Even tho the speed limit is 80 the cop gave her a lecture that it was too fast in these conditions and told her to slow down and be careful.

I personally thing good on him, this was her first time pulled over and it freaked her out. Hopefully she will slow down now rather then getting into a accident and getting hurt.

I'm just amazed at the amount of people driving with following distances less than 2 seconds in this weather. In snowy/icy conditions, following distances should be at least 4 seconds, longer is preferred.

I was driving home with my family after eating out and was amazed at how close the car behind me was to my car. Not tailgating by any means but just the following distance is definitely < 2 seconds. Meanwhile I maintain a steady 5 seconds distance from the car in front of me. Nobody is driving faster than 40 in these conditions yet once in a while (and by while I mean a few minutes) you will see the odd driver with snow tires (some probably don't even have snows) going by at 50 or even faster.

People need to just be patient and leave earlier if they need to get somewhere on time. Despite the conditions, I actually enjoyed the drive with my family. In fact, it was almost like an adventure driving through a sea of white. Felt like Christmas again almost. Felt great and really relaxed compared to those who are always in a rush and getting pissed at every driver slower than them.

I hope you motherfuckers that wanted snow got what you wished for.

The commute home was a bitch because NONE of the roads were plowed and I'm talking about Broadway, Kingsway, Main etc. I don't care about the snow if our city is equip for it but we're not. We have like 5 snow plows in the entire GVR and we rarely get snow that people aren't accustomed to driving in it which leads to accidents. The packed down snow + ice on the roads doesn't help either.

People crash in dry weather and in rain. I don't think it would be to far fetched to assume that some might crash in the snow and ice it is slippery as fuck. I hear what your saying about people driving like idiots, going to fast or not leaving enough space but accidents are going to happen, more then happen when road conditions are ideal it's simple physics.

I love late night driving when it snows (especially with my subie). No stupid unprepared drivers on the road, people don't take up two lanes, and there's basically no traffic.
It really makes driving in the snow enjoyable considering you dont have to constantly be on edge anticipating the traffic.

Here's a summary of what I saw on a short drive between East Van + Brentwood last night:
A sedan getting acquainted with a tree coming down the hill at 41st + rupert.
A rav-4 running the red light at kingsway + rupert and almost sliding straight into the center median across the street.
Countless cars + SUVs coming to a sliding stop at red lights.
A corolla making a right turn from boundary onto 22nd way too quickly, slid and almost hit the poor xterra waiting to turn left. I would've shit my pants if i was in that xterra.
A cadillac seville turning into my gf's apartment complex at buchanan. Came down the slope beside sushi garden too quickly, slid and made a b-line straight for the fire hydrant beside the entrance to the parkade lol. Unfortunately he stopped within a feet of the fire hydrant.
And a 2 car "pileup" at the bottom of boundary hill, right underneath the highway 1 overpass...
I swear some people just need to learn the hard way and run into a lifeless object for the safety of others.

As for myself, I barely got up Boundary ;)

Driving was fine for me.
The major problem are the idiots that don't compensate for snow conditions and just drive like normal.

Shoulda took a picture..
But all the men in my block assembled around 8:30 (including me) and shoveled the hell out of the block. When one guy finished early, he helped his neighbour, and when they finished, they helped out the other guys. It's was cool seeing that camaraderie between us.

But I bet once the snow clears, they're gonna steal each others parking spots again. haha

And the fucking neighbor who always parked in front of his house jacked my spot, his house is 2 away from ours. So then I shoveled the a spot infront of the next house in between us so I had a parking spot, and packed the snow around his car.

Drove by an accident yesterday on No.3 Road, some BMW rear ended another car, then on Hastings (near PNE and Victoria) a few cars couldn't make it up the hill part and lot's of other cars sliding when they were making turns.
