Finished off my ghetto DIY short ram intake with a piece of dryer duct from Home Depot. Cut off a small piece of the front airdam behind the upper grille allowing more air to enter the dryer duct.

Strangely enough, the dryer duct actually makes the intake system louder lol.

This is as ghetto as it gets. I'm itching to just rip the entire airbox out, buy some Spectre intake pipes and stick on a cone filter at the end.

EDIT: For those who are wondering, ripping out the stock resonator does make a difference in acceleration and throttle response, however more so in the higher rpms and at WOT. Can't feel any feasible difference during normal driving.

If you look closely through the front of the upper grille, you can see it, as I cut out a piece of the airdam behind that grille to allow more airflow.

Since the tube itself is not smooth, it will introduce a lot of turbulence.. What you can notice is probably just your imagination. Try to keep the metal from touching any other metal parts like your battery post.. you don't want have other things corrode because you thought putting cheap non automotive things into the engine compartment is a good idea.

The dryer duct itself isn't directly connected to that plastic intake snorkel, it simply guides air in. My setup without the dryer duct can be seen a couple posts back.

What Godwin is talking about is the fact that after the air filter is still the stock rubber piping which causes turbulent air going into the motor.
Remember, when you are driving, there is plenty of cool air flowing through the engine bay.
Like a pipe organ, a properly tuned CAI is velocity tuned so that the mendrel bend piping will smooth out the air going into the motor.

Finally fixed the HVAC fan/motor unit. It was making obnoxiously unbearable clicking and whirring noises, along with the fan itself cutting in and out. My guess was just dust and particles getting into the motor or the bearings or some sorcery. However when I took it out, it looked rather clean to me.

It was an easy fix, but the unit itself was a bitch to get to. Beneath the glovebox/above the passenger footwell. Unclipped a large black plastic piece, three screws on the unit, while having my head essentially resting on the floormat looking upside down

Clicking noise and low fan speed is gone, but the whirring is still there. Probably going to order a new HVAC fan/motor unit.

put my silver sideskirts on finally (had black and a weird blue/silver shade before) and sanded my plenum on my intake to get prepped for polish.

it sure is a pain in the ass to sand away scratches/casting marks in metal to make it look pretty... but damn, its worth it

on my 5 series:

I was having a small rough idle (just on idle).

I was curiously looking around the engine bay and noticed something was off, and my EGR air pump was basically off its mounting bracket and somewhat dangling. Luckily it never hit the floor and get hit or anything.

Ordered some new rubber mounts to attach the air pump to its bracket (3 small mounts @ $21 each - ouch!). I needed a new EGR hose too, as the old one was basically disintegrated.

issue is fixed, and running smoothly for now :) Also my odometer rolled past 200,000kms.

did you take any mechanic to check out the car before you bought it just to make sure you didn't get a lemon :suspicious:

I think he is saying spacers for the fronts to clear the brakes? How much more room do you think you'd need?

Even with a 12mm spacer they didnt clear, the brakes are hitting where the wheel disk bolts up to the barrel.. damn you beautiful stepped lips!!!! And with that 12mm spacer, there is an insane amount of poke, way more than the rear.

It's a shame. With the current high fuel prices, some people are cheaping out on gas thinking the knock sensor will retard the timing enough to run the car safely on 87 octane.

If they are running to low of octane, there could be some detonation damage on the piston top and combustion chamber. Pull out the plugs and take a look at them.

I've also heard that detonation causes unnecessary stress/wear on crank shaft bearings too.

Depends on the car, if it's newer it should have knock sensors and the technology to retard timing to prevent pre-detonation from occurring.

That's the problem. Depending on how far back the car is programmed to retard the timing, it may not be enough to prevent detonation.
Especially if the car is designed to run on 91 octane and the owner uses 87 for an extended period of time.

Those wheels :drool

Spent 20 minutes today doing a cheap little DIY on the interior of my car. The fake switches kind of bugged me and I needed a place to put my cell phone if I had a drink in the car, so I made this :)

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/524315_10151948190320582_1149011408_n.jpg

Cut out and made a little cardboard box and covered it with an old black shirt I didn't need anymore so it would be a bit more gentle on my phone. Didn't want to use any kind of adhesive to bond the cloth onto the cardboard in case it'll fall out later, sharpied the staples black so it blends in with the shirt. Not too happy that it's cardboard, but I guess you can't really tell. Much more useful than the fake switches lol
