Also ended up swapping my hid bulbs in fogs from 3000k to 6000k however it looks like I'm going to need to retrofit some projectors. 3000k wasn't blinding at night but 6000k is absolutely atrocious.

First thing was to get rid of my yellowing headlights on my DD Acura. No before or after shots, mainly because I didn't think about it. I probably could have gone a little deeper in my driver's side headlight and it's not perfectly clear, but it's still miles better than what it was before. No more diffused light output, which is nice.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b389/lomac20/20160821_124518_zpshmvgwkrh.jpg

Next up, the Saab. In keeping with the theme of seeing how cheaply I can repair it, I spent the better part of a year looking for parts and avoiding buying new. Finally found a throttle cable (considering new ones were backordered for many months anyway, I didn't have much of a choice to search for a used one) and red top DIC.

Yes, I was using zipties to hold the cable in place. Don't judge me. :p
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b389/lomac20/20160822_195610_zps8w7rwtqp.jpg

There's the reason for needing a new cable.

All better!
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b389/lomac20/20160822_203256_zpsfqqx1jp6.jpg

Next up, the Cassette. Got it shipped from one of the Southern States off of Ebay. Figured for $100 shipped, I couldn't go wrong. New ones run for $500 plus shipping and aftermarket ones are well known for dying very quickly. This one looked a little rough on the surface, but the boots checked out and I didn't see any visual damage to anything.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b389/lomac20/20160903_123351_zps8y0m8rcb.jpg

The car was running a black top T7 DIC. Even though they're technically compatible, it's not recommended for more than diagnosing certain things or driving down the block and back. This one, however, seemed to be causing issues with the car.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b389/lomac20/20160903_125819_zps2bisksux.jpg

Speaking of issues, this may have been part of the problem... Obviously there was some heat soak happening here.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b389/lomac20/20160903_130508_zpszstu1dlw.jpg

A quick trip to Lordco to grab some dielectric grease for the plugs and new bolts and washers to replace the old, rusted ones...
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b389/lomac20/20160903_151343_zpsyaekewy8.jpg

And in she goes. Kinda nice to see a splash of colour in the engine bay, especially when it actually belongs there from the factory.

Noticed a musty smell inside the car after it rained. Pulled back the passenger side carpet and noticed about 2 inches of water in the floorboard. The sunroof drain started leaking again. I just got it fixed from the dealer 6 months ago, do you think they will repair it again under no cost since it has been less than a year? Sat there for an hour with a blow dryer making sure all the moisture evaporated.

They did not warranty it. They made some B.S. excuse about how it is my fault for parking my car outside allowing the drains to get clogged. I've had different cars over the years with sunroofs and none of them have leaked. Never going back to Auto West Infiniti, they do not stand behind their work.

How is that a BS excuse?

You're sunroof drain got clogged, they explained it to you, unclogged it, and then you proceeded to park under trees letting pine needles, leaves and other debris clog it again. Why should they warranty an issue caused by user error?

It's a documented issue with Infiniti's, the drain system for G35's, my FX, and G37's are all kinda prone to clogging. It's not brilliant, but a little bit of diligence on your part would avoid the issue. Try not to park under trees (this avoids sap marks on your paint as well as issues like the sunroof getting clogged). When you are cleaning the car pour a little water in the area and it should clear out the debris. You can take this a step farther and lift the roof rails in your car up and clean all the debris under those out.

Autowest Infiniti is actually a very good dealership. In fact Morrey Infiniti (newly opened in burnaby) and Regency Infiniti (now named North Shore Infiniti - After it was purchased by Dilwari) are all fantastic.

Finally got around to hardwiring my dashcam and Sirius radio into the car, now that I picked up a new antenna for it. Old one kept saying it was disconnected. Upon inspection it looked like something had impacted and damaged it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/lomac/Mobile%20Uploads/20160910_132639_zpsxezl9qch.jpg

Also finally wired in my sub and amps. It involved taking out the majority of the interior of the car in order to run the cables and tie them down properly. Since it was the first time I had taken the Acura apart, it took a little longer than I expected. But it's nice to finally have some oomph to my music again. Oh, and I discovered during this process that the deck I've owned for many years actually has an aux-in. Didn't realize I could actually be playing music off my phone instead of listening to USB or Sirius... :lol

Under the rear seats was actually a little cleaner than I had expected...

Unfortunately while taking the trunk liner out, I discovered a large puddle of water sitting in the spare wheel well. I think I managed to trace it to the source, which was the passenger side taillight. Sealed it with some quality sealant to temporarily fix it while I wait for a new gasket to arrive. Hopefully that will fix the issue.

Working on refinishing the wheels I am going to use for Fall and Winter, they were pretty faded and had lots of chips in them. My first time trying to refinish a set myself but they turned out alright, I probably should of done a little more prep work and wet-sanding in between coats. They will be good enough for a set of winters though.

I replaced the halogen brake light bulbs with LED on a 2016 civic. The ones on the side worked out quite well with a set of the Philips 7443. But the high mount was fail. I slapped in a 50W mega LED and it still wasn't as good as regular halogen in the daytime. Night time seemed good though.

It's definitely difficult for an LED to light up the entire housing in a wide dispersal of light. Sigh... Back to the drawing board.

I have a bunch of time off work so my goal was to install my megasquirt, and sell my condo.

Condo is gone, but Megasquirt to go.

Today I made a bracket to fit up under the dash. Went back to the days of shop class and bent up some ABS.

Bare $3 scrap sheet from Industrial Paints and Plastics
http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/hud_91gt/Mobile%20Uploads/image_11.jpg

As the British dude dubbed, some CAD (Cardboard aided design)
http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/hud_91gt/Mobile%20Uploads/image_10.jpg

Bent up with a $12 heat gun and some 2x4's and test fitting in place with the MS.
http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/hud_91gt/Mobile%20Uploads/image_12.jpg

Almost finished, wiring to go
http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/hud_91gt/Mobile%20Uploads/image_13.jpg

Then when I was done that, I started on a bracket for my LS2 coils. I'll mount all 6 of them on this piece of aluminum angle I cut up with my angle grinder. Certainly not perfection, but will look good from far and most importantly... it'll work.

Was bored on the weekend so decided to give my Genesis a new colour. Thought I might as well take a stab at body work to cover up door dings :heckno:
Took roughly 10hr's to do the fenders, hood, doors, 1/4, trunk, rocker and by the time it was finish baking at 4am, we decided to call it quits for the day. Plan on painting the rest another day and the hood black too. Until then, probably wont release the colour yet, but took me a couple days to find. Hint: It's from a 90's porsch

Removing a couple door dings and first time really doing body work. Scuffed down to the base, filled with filler > sand > more filler > sand > check from even surface > putty > finish with 180 grit
http://i.imgur.com/zrngUcd.jpg

Then came all the R&I's... roof moulding, belt moulding, weather strip, front bumper, grill, side mirrors, door handles, rear bumper, headlamp, tail lamp emblem came off.
http://i.imgur.com/XqixbQ2.jpg

Pulled it into the paint shop and started with sanding the spots where I did body work starting from 320 to 600, made sure there was no deep scratches so I could avoid primer and use sealer instead. After, I ran the DA over the entire car with 800 grit.
http://i.imgur.com/AmQMupR.jpg

After sanding, gave it a quick wipe down and blew the dust off. Rolled it into the paint booth and started masking. After masking, I wiped down the car with paint degreaser and tack cloth.

Ready for paint! started off with 2 coats of sealant around the area where there was body work. While the seal was drying, I mixed 3 bottles(1.8L) of basecoat for spray. Sprayed the first coat lightly - emphasizing on the wheels wells, left it to dry for 15mins, second layer of base coat on - 20mins, turn on downdraft fans and left for 30mins to dry completely.
http://i.imgur.com/Yxgxq0O.jpg

Once the basecoat was dry to the touch, it was time for clear. I mixed 3 bottles of fast drying clear and sprayed 2 coats 5-8mins apart. One the last coat went on, I baked it for 30mins and 15 mins of cool down time.

By this time, it was 3:30 and we were ready to go home, quickly threw it back together (took about 30mins) and taped "IN PROGRESS" so people didn't ask so many questions.

Plan on doing the rest next week, hopefully if I have time.

I finished the install of the remote starter, for some reason the ebrake wire was causing it to not work, once I disconnected that it worked perfectly. Now I just need to get the stupid thing into programming mode so I can switch it to diesel mode (delay for the glow plugs). I find it easier to open the headlight housing if I bake the headlights in an oven first. I then use a heat gun to loosen the adhesive. For sealing them back together, I use Butyl Rubber Glue. It works great.

It was easier than I thought!

So i sourced this full$ on red interior and i pounced on that with the quickness.lol

My only complain was that its electric sports seats and mine is the manual sports seats.

With past exp i was able to retrofit the s2000 seats unto my prelude by switching the seat pan and using the rails for the prelude. So i thought forsure being as its the same car i could just easily switch the rails and i retain the manual controls. WRONG!

$http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x374/jackp0t_/for%20sale/20170201_180702.jpg (http://s1178.photobucket.com/user/jackp0t_/media/for%20sale/20170201_180702.jpg.html)

So many parts$ and extra component$ like the lumbar support$ on it that i had to abort the mission.lol!

So for awhile$ i was contemplating if i should just sell the seats$ since the thought of wiring an electric seats unto a manual made my head hurt until a saw some peeps in the e92 community retrofiting it. So that boost my confidence$ and also its CORAL RED!

Here we go

$http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x374/jackp0t_/for%20sale/20170212_150203.jpg (http://s1178.photobucket.com/user/jackp0t_/media/for%20sale/20170212_150203.jpg.html)

Removing the connector took longer than removing the actual$ seat lol

It also helped that i yanked the connector from$ electric seats so i was able to compare the wires with the manual seat wires

$http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x374/jackp0t_/for%20sale/20170212_153002.jpg (http://s1178.photobucket.com/user/jackp0t_/media/for%20sale/20170212_153002.jpg.html)

Nice job. ^^^

Spent about 10-14 hours bending fuel lines. Fitting 3/8" lines where 5/16" and 3/16" lines use to be can be challenging. I had to drill out the crumbling old rubber mounts and hope for the best. New mounts would have been nice, but I would have had to drill them out too. I really should have done this when the engine and transmission were out. I ended up pulling the whole rear drivetrain, and suspension except the struts themselves to get better access. Parking brake cables disconnected too. Under the car is complete, and about 50% done the engine bay. Slow process. I should wash the undercoating to see if it actually burns black??

Replaced my blackvue DR3500-FHD with DR650GW. hid the wiring from the rear cam along the top headliner and through the A-pillar. pretty clean install...for a DIY. the 3500 was already hardwired via the PMP so I just used the same power source to the 650. works great.

Or can someone recommend a vinyl wrap shop or person? I want to get my roof wrapped on my STI.

Pulled off the front bumper and air scoops to pull the condensers off the radiators and clean out all the crap that's gotten lodged in there over the years. Wheel well liners broke apart on disassembly, bolts frozen that needed to be ground off. Nasty, messy, PITA job. Awesome. The picture does NOT do justice to the grossness.

after a little over a month driving my aristo that I bought at the end of december I went over my usual maintenance items whenever I buy a car.

changed: synthetic engine oil, transmission fluid, diff fluid, power steering fluid, serp belt, plug wires

To my surprise despite running so well I got a bit of a surprise when I decided it was time to do the plugs and some of the gaskets. I was expecting some usual wear and tear given it's a turbo motor and over 100K but this was a little bit more than that. pulled the plug cover off to find a bunch of the hoses crumbling but rtv'd together, coil pack connectors broken, absolutely shitty plugs and valve covers literally loose and leaking oil. Going through it all I lucky I did it when I did, also found I should be doing the t belt soon too looks to have a bit of oil on it. Took a couple pics but now too many given I wanted the car done:

Starter on my Taco was hanging up for a second after it was already running, so I figured the solenoid contacts needed replacing cause it wasn't pulling back right away. Went to get some tools and a jack and after I was all loaded up, the truck wouldn't start. The motor would spin but the Bendix wasn't engaging. Perfect timing, in the pouring rain, no less and I was just about to do it in the warmth of my garage.

Took my car back to RG yesterday for another dyno day. Stock was 187whp/225wtq. Yesterday did 265whp/330wtq. Super smooth graph which I was very impressed with. Each pull it lost a little power though. It's still on the OEM intercooler so it's no suprise. Proper FMIC/charge pipes and a custom dyno tune (not off the shelf) and 300whp is doable. Easy if I add meth/water injection.

Very happy with the results, no hiccups what so ever

That's a pretty good gain from stock.

What did you do to the car to get those numbers? I think the gains become extremely marginal after the second or third pull due to heat soak, but otherwise, impressive numbers.

And stock intercoolers on any car almost always suck. :p

Well, I will preface by saying my rule for buying a new car was that if I mod it, I cannot buy new parts. All must be used (or Craigslist bnib but not retail price). Everything I've gotten was at a significant saving from list price. I'll just say power mods

2014 focus ST. 32,500km
- Cobb accessport v3 running ots stage 3 93 octane @22psi
- fswerks CAI
- fswerks 3" catless DP
- mbrp 3" stainless catback
- turbosmart 50/50 BOV

The two limiting factors in the system are the stock intercooler and the stock turbo. I don't track my car, just daily drive. As such I've always watched the iat's and it is shockingly low and still cools quickly after pulls. Our climate is way milder than most guys in the states that have run into issues with overheating. But now I see the choke point. The turbo is crazy, full boost at about 2400rpm. Biggest issue is they run out of breathe over 5200rpm (as clearly shown on the dyno) so you pretty much have 1500rpm before redline that has no use.
Torque also significantly drops off after 4500rpm which is completely solved by swapping to a gt2876r, but then that's entering a whole new level of modifications I'm not ready for.

Still waiting for a used intercooler kit....

Rally Bug now has a hydraulic clutch system which utilizes a hidden master cylinder in the transmission tunnel, and a concentric hydraulic throwout bearing in the transmission. The swap wasn't easy, and ended up well over budget...but it's done, and works awesome.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/644/32326355603_b4a0f417fb_c.jpg

While I had the engine out, I stripped it down for a check/refresh. Definitely needed bearings after 92 thousand miles, and worked out my valvetrain noise (cracked timing gear). Being ahead of my usual spring schedule, I decided to swap the car over to fuel injection. Cue another 25ft of Russell Braided lines, and more fittings than I care to count. Surge tank up front, filters in the rear just before the firewall and separate fuel injection and ignition computer systems. Inside of the car is starting to feel like an Apollo mission.

The cold start settings on my map are still crap, worse than trying to start the engine on cold weber carbs (notoriously difficult). But once warm it idles perfectly and is coming together on the road tuning.

A little birdie told me you moved to the island... Is it a little strange when someone you don't know, knows things about you? ha

Looks good. I've been slaving away on my fuel injection all winter. Seems like it was a "I had a little extra time" project for you. haha

I'm now at the point where I'm sorta used it. It's only awkward when meeting someone in person for the first time, and one of us knows way more about the other because of online forums. I met a guy at a RallyX last year who knew all about my car from some magazine features. The weird part, though, is there should have been zero way for him to connect me to the work I do with SRTUSA...that freaked me out a little.

But yeah, island move = house of my own and a big shop! I even have room to buy another Volkswagen project...

Fuel injection project totally started as a "meh, I probably have time" side project...but it ended up a little more involved then I thought. Between the need to have a custom starter built in California for the clutch project, and the injection install taking longer then I estimated...I figure I'm about two weeks behind where I'd "like" to be, and about four weeks ahead of where I usually am for my Spring events :P

@CCA-Dave, are you planning on taking that beast to Knox hillclimb? Seems like it would be perfect for that event

Negative. While it is an event I would love to do, it conflicts with the Hagerty Silver Summit CCA event in Denver each year. I'll be doing 11,000 foot passes in Colorado all weekend on some of the best roads I've ever driven.

Cooked up my intake for dinner!

If you've been following my build thread you will know I ported my soon to be intake manifold, by doing this i cut it in half, then had it welded back together. I shaved a ton of extra nubs off of it for a slightly cleaner look but still wanted a factory look.

I decided to try the ever so popular in the 2000's wrinkle paint. That is what I'm baking in the oven.

I used some epoxy filler which contain aluminum to fill in some oopsies with the grinder. No holes, just ugly slashes. Unfortunetly I think the epoxy is off gassing still and made a few bubbles in the wrinkly. Ill have to fix those up tomorrow.

I tried the BBQ first but my bbq wasnt big enough to close the lid. Into the oven they went... And I went for some fresh air on the patio with a half bottle of wine. Despite the rain.

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/hud_91gt/Mobile%20Uploads/20170327_191129_zpsfylayqp6.jpg

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/hud_91gt/Mobile%20Uploads/20170327_190837_zpsxha3ap03.jpg

When I successfully fix the bubbling ill spray it with some aluma blast and hopefully it all finishes off looking like a plain old cast aluminum manifold.

DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU LIVE WITH SOMEONE. Omg it stinks and my wine is getting low. Should have started with a full bottle.

Good for you. I attempted that one years back when I had my E36. It ended up getting towed to a shop. I've got a little more confidence now, I'd like to try again. Ha

I nearly gave up because I wanted to take out the radiator fan first; I failed at that and was about to throw in the towel when I said screw the fan...

Was over on the mainland, doing the route book for this year's Hagerty Spring Thaw. Partway through 'day two' the clutch started acting fun, like there was air in the hydraulics. Bleeding the Dodge clutch system is ridiculous (there is no bleed screw), so I opted to not worry about it. Wasn't losing any fluid, bottom of trans was dry, I can drive sans clutch if the master or slave goes...so carry on I did. Finished the route, was doing about 120kph just past Agassiz when I heard a very light bearing whine. I lifted partway, the whine got worse, tried a bit more throttle, still worse.

Hit my signals to move over to the right lane, and the transmission grenaded internally. Made it to the shoulder, before the drivetrain locked solid.

First time I've ever towed a vehicle to a shop...geesh, I must be getting old.

I ended up blowing the truck up 30km from a buddy's house in Greendale, upon hearing of my plight he offered me dinner...and then the keys to his Porsche 914 2.0L. "I need it back at the end of April, have fun!"

So now that I'm back home on the island, I'm digging into a job I offered to do for a buddy of mine. The blower motor on this 2006 Range Rover has bad bearings. 5.5 Hours into digging, still nowhere near the blower motor. Possibly regretting getting into this :P

8.5 hours total to get to the blower motor on the range rover:

Another 4 hours to make it all look like a car again:
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/17630081_10158366846530468_6472175725368052446_n.j pg?oh=5cbd16bbe19159f717a2d8d3cd2f31f6&oe=599189FD

So, before the rain came, I took a break on the Range Rover and washed 'the collection'...
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/17799401_10158371353025468_6505728015159610076_n.j pg?oh=6f4720575581e36a82cd5885afb21418&oe=594C686D

Unfortunately the Porsche 914 isn't mine, a buddy loaned it to me when my truck exploded so I could get back home to the island. Tonight I finally got the Range Rover *almost* finished. New brake pad wear sensors, repair the leaking taillight, fix the burnt out bulbs. Just gotta clear an airbag light, road test it to see if the dash rattles, and put the summer tires on...

I hardwired my dashcam, ran power to my auxiliary fuse box, swapped my remote start over to the new fuse box, wired in my sub (stock headunit), wired in diff lock indicator LEDs, trimmed my damaged front bumper and vacuumed out a ton of crap from the previous owner. Then I took pictures of the auxiliary reverse light I added without needing to cut into the stock wiring at all so I can do a writeup.

Not so much just today but over the past week and half I have been replacing old ratty pieces in my aristo again. Was hopefully going to go smoothly but as with anything when these things not so the case what so ever. Biggest problem with the car was my radiator literally falling apart, I had the upper water neck literally fall apart in my hands as I was installing my new upper rad hose. The hunt for a new rad was super shitty struck out in so many places and ended up just screwing with things and making a usdm gs300 rad work for it(kind of sucks it's a single core rad vs the aristo 2 core).

Well aside from gripping about the crappy rad I managed to replace my radiator hoses with whifbitiz silicone ones, mishimoto low temp thermostat, custom intake I mad and custom intercooler pipes for the stock side mount I made. Not too many pics during the process but did manage to take a completed engine bay pic:

Rally bug needed a new steering damper, which I had suspected due to age/miles, so I had one in stock. What I wasn't prepared for was the blown bushing seen on the left of the photo. Had a set of random sway bar bushings in a bin, an untouched one is is in the middle of the photo. A few minutes with a drill and angle grinder, used in a manner not found in the manual, and I have a new set of steering damper bushings which should last the duration of the Hagerty Spring Thaw without issues. If you're going to leave stuff to the last minute, you better be creative!

I travel to and from remote/rural area's in BC for work quite frequently and because my stock halogen lights weren't bright enough, I decided it was time for an upgrade. With a budget of $140 ($20 for express shipping due to my tight schedule) and 10 hours of labor, I finally completed my headlight conversion at 3 in the morning. I don't think I will ever do a retrofit conversion again although the end results were orgasmic..

P.S. I apologize in advance for the vertical rotation of the last photo with the cut offline..
P.S.S I am selling a pair of Sylviana's Silverstar Ultra's 9006 for $30 w/ the original receipt. I bought them in October 2016 so it still has 5 more month's of warranty left. (they are a significant upgrade from the original bulbs but not as bright as HID's + projectors ;))

I've been so slammed since the Hagerty Spring Thaw Started, I didn't update on my fuel injection woes. The month before the event the Rally Bug was running and tuning fantastic, so I left on the Spring Thaw expecting things to be smooth sailing. The weekend, however, had other plans.

First off, the day before the event my trusty facet fuel pump I've been using for four years bit the biscuit. The car was no longer keeping the surge tank full, so the high-pressure pump was starving for fuel. Then, the Duffey Lake road had an Avalanche the night before the event...and then again the morning of. I madly typed out new route instructions while everyone registered, delivering the new route at the morning driver's meeting. We hit the Sea to Sky, and eventually the #1 towards Hope in pouring rain. After crossing the Port Mann, the Rally Bug started to exhibit signs I was losing a fuel pump yet again. Then, right before 200st, the Rally Beetle died with fuel starvation.

Hmmm. Fuel in the tank, both pumps working. Hmmm. We limped down to Mopac, I swapped out the fuel filters, tried a few other tricks, and then pulled the plug. I rented a car at the Abbotsford Airport, as the organizer needs to get to the dinner on time!

Ironically, after 30min in the rental car I realized I could have just swapped out the fuel pickup to the gas-heater fuel pickup located higher up in the tank. On the way home from the Spring Thaw we stopped at the car, swapped the lines, and drove the Rally Bug home. With the Hagerty Silver Summit in Colorado now complete, I finally got a chance to take a look at what was going on with the Rally Bug.

The post-surge-tank filter confirmed what I was thinking - it's gotta be dirt causing the issue. Despite the tank being quite clean to the eye, with the constant circulation of the fuel now that I'm running injection, I suspect I'm unsettling any and all the dirt that was in the crevices of the tank.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4198/34638377660_91fc230ef5.jpg

Pulled the fuel tank, and then the fuel outlet fitting and discovered it was completely plugged. Hmmm. Started to push the dirt out and was blown away by what I found. What are the chances that a piece of rubber, the exact size needed to plug the outlet would be loose in my tank? One of my vw buddies identified the rubber bit as the bumper off the fuel-level sender. Never seen one fall off...never imagined it would fit the fuel tank outlet perfectly!
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4248/34638377340_7f796efa7b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4267/34638377020_921c86ce99.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4197/34638376850_3104294bd4_z.jpg

So tonight I machined the outlet to accept a pre-screen. Yeah, yeah, in hindsight it seems like a painfully obvious item that I would have needed on the first go. Filter screen is press-fit, but I still used a bit of fuel-safe sealant to ensure it stays on the outlet.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4272/34638092120_0abc87b643_z.jpg

On the topside, the Rally Bug now has two low-pressure pumps ready to feed the surge tank. The backup pump isn't completely hooked up, as I still want to be able to use the gas-heater. Should the fuel system have an issue, however, it will only take me about 5min on the side of the road to flip the system over to the other pickup and pump.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4251/34181638254_623d72110a_z.jpg

Ready to go...if I actually had any fuel in the shop. Need to head out in the morning to fill some cans at the Chevron.

The '58 Volkswagen desperately needed the headlights aimed, partially a factor of never really driving it at night. When I built it, I had to use 'new replacement' headlight assemblies, and they're never as good as original German. Something in the adjustment had broken in the right side headlight, so I had to pull the buckets...

Might as well upgrade while you're in there! First thing to go was the sealed-beam headlights. Now, my '58 is converted to 12v (originals were 6 volt), so putting in a Euro-code H4 headlight assembly makes sense. While I was at it, I figured why not try out some LED headlights. The photo above shows the Bright Source (http://www.brightsource.ca) H4 Headlight on right, and the 12v sealed beam on the left.

Also worked out the source of the transmission fluid on the floor. One of my new swing axle boots is leaking. Sigh. Replacement parts for classic cars are so hit and miss. Ah well, topped up the fluid and I'll order boots for the next time.

Okay, so one thing I never learned to enjoy, and thus do well, is detailing a car. I can wash and turn the Rally Bug from dust bomb to like-new-clean...but waxing and polishing just isn't my thing. I burned the paint on one of my beloved cars back when I was 18, and haven't really risked it since. Spray wax in a bottle is about as far as I go :P

Now, mind you, I own drivers and have rarely owned a vehicle where the paint is so good you'd notice the lack of detailing. I mean, the Rally Bug is awesome...but gravel rash is sort of it's character.

After having most of the '58 repainted, however, it was in desperate need for a wax. First off, all the new paint has just been hanging out unprotected since September of last year. Secondly, I didn't repaint the doors, rear side panels or rear fenders. It was an ICBC insurance job, and I put extra money into things like the interior and headliner. The sides of the car had really bad swirl marks in the paint from the previous owner. When the car was clean, you could 100% tell he washed it in an up and down motion.

I must be getting older and wiser...I have never paid anyone to wash my car before...
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/18815149_10158793415675468_5571173920625030409_o.j pg?oh=63ef998859650edb5309d6519d7d7ff6&oe=59C4C21D

Rick has done a friend of mine's 2002, his 3.0CS and his 944...so I knew Rick wasn't going to ruin the car...but black is so hard to keep swirl free. Friday was a rather nervous day. Rick was going to wash the car, paint correct the sides, and wax the whole thing.

https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/19243384_10158795359500468_5490092392165039380_o.j pg?oh=abec02ff9b454ec436da426e4dadcf80&oe=5A0D8B10

Super stoked on the final result. The paint matches on the whole car, the swirl marks are gone and I can actually see myself in the side of it. Caught myself debating on whether or not I should take the car out on Saturday evening, as it was going to be parked under trees for a few hours.

Don't worry, slapped myself and took the car. I don't own garage queens, even if they look good :P

CCA-Dave
06-28-2017, 08:08 AM
Hahaha, yeah I do. Points have never left a man stranded on the side of the road. Pertronix though? Many times. Rally Beetle runs electronic ignition, and I've been meaning to move the pertronix over now that the Rally Beetle doesn't use it anymore (fully electronic and programable)...but the points work, and I try to do as little as possible on the '58 :P

--------

I was telling Rob at AVR Parts about how I've almost been rear ended in the '58 a couple of times. He's got a shelf at the shop with my name on it, but now that I've moved to the island I often get care packages. Three days after we chatted, Vintage Speed LED tail-lamps showed up on my door. Upgraded light on left, the 12-volt I was running on the right. The brake light brightness is nutty in comparison to the old.

To give you a better idea of how dim the old setup was: backing up to my garage door at night, I could never tell if my tail lights were working. Even hitting the brake pedal, you couldn't see a red-glow against the garage unless you got within inches of the door.

Pulled the Land Cruiser out of long-term storage, and finally decided to get cracking on it. Condition wise, it's in pretty fantastic shape for it's age...but the rust underneath is at that pivotal point where its not quite bad enough to blow the truck apart for a restoration, but if you leave it as is, it will deteriorate quickly. No time or budget for a restoration, so lets see if I can't seal it up and buy some time.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4282/35330468360_3e746b1064_c.jpg

See, it's not _bad_, but it's definitely starting. Obviously in the seams it's worse, and behind the protective flaps the previous owner added is pretty soft, but there is still lots of good strong metal left. While I'm not an LC afficianado, I suspect this particular example has had some previous owner additions to accommodate the seats in the back (among other things)
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4282/35330467400_d38fe290be_c.jpg

Once it was up on jack stands, I gave the entire underside a full degreasing with engine degreaser and brake clean, before crawling under the thing with the pressure washer for a full wash. Once dry, I hit up the underside with various wire wheels, wire brushes and flap discs to get down to bare metal wherever possible. The underside got another round with pressure washer (because, you know, bury the water as deep into the vehicle as you possibly can :P) and then gave it a full 24hrs of heat to dry it out. A final blast with air from the compressor told me that all the cracks and such were dry, and it was into the shop on axle stands.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4095/35586643411_06486c2a8c_c.jpg

Obviously, based on these next photos, I'm not really concerned with "factory look". The truck has been undercoated twice in it's life, *possibly* once at the factory and then again at some point when it must have had some body-off work done on the frame. Most of the body rust was from where the undercoating had dried, cracked and thus failed. Let this be a lesson to you young kiddies - NEVER undercoat a vehicle after paint. Only use undercoat that goes on before the vehicle is painted. #oldmanadvice

Anyways, 5.5 hours of POR15 painting later...

Of course my coveralls allowed the POR15 drips to soak through, so it's either long-sleeves and pants for the next week or I'll be explaining to everyone I talk to why I look like a homeless person. "No really, it's paint...it doesn't wash off."

Been a long time since I've posted on here. Figured I'll throw up a couple photos of what I've had to do these past couple months.

Acura EL

First up, I had to replace the climate control switch unit in the car.

https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/21192623_10159299437395080_8930131858745422547_n.j pg?oh=d7607435f2044bfb1d51203576b09d28&oe=5A5CF628

Last up, the wiring loom in the driver side front fender needed attention. My temporary crimp job was beginning to fail so I decided to pull all the butt connectors and do a proper solder/heat shrink job.

https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/21270829_10159299419700080_7010187456819595801_n.j pg?oh=aa7f3f5c08c74bf7c20ac3cbdba2844a&oe=5A5DC250

Next up, the Mazda 3. Was driving it one night and lost all my coolant as I pulled into a McDicks. This was my first time actually pulling anything apart under the hood so the job took a bit longer than I had anticipated. That said, I found the culprit in the form of a dead gasket, along with a bonus problem.

First time doing any wrenching myself, idk what I was thinking when I decided to do ps replacement myself. Did the teardown today while I was waiting for parts. Finally learned the differences between a 1/4 and 1/2 drive and that I NEED socket/wrench extensions among many other things.

Parts JUST came in, so I'm pretty stoked to start putting my car back together and then I can drive again! I kinda got shafted by CT tho. I still gotta wait for them to restock spark plug sockets so I can exchange my defective one. That and, they decided to cancel my order for socket/wrench extensions :/

We'll see how excited I am, when I actually start removing and replacing my PS assembly. But for now, I'm pretty happy about wrenching. Which is good, considering I need to do upper control arms next. Anyone ever DIY RTABs ?

Do you have a factory manual, or the factory steps for rebleeding the power steering system? It _can_ be a unique method, depending on the car...

Do you have a factory manual, or the factory steps for rebleeding the power steering system? It _can_ be a unique method, depending on the car...My factory manual was stolen from the PO. But I did get access to ProDemand's steps and Chilton Library which seem to be the same:

1. Turn off engine and fill ps tank until level reaches MAX mark on the dipstick
2. Start engine. Turn steering wheel twice as far as left and right lock.
3. Turn off engine and top off again to MAX

I'm actually looking to do a full flush as my current fluid is black. So I want everything bad out of the system.

why so early? don't the spark plug last a good 100k?

Oops just saw this post now lol

I changed it as a preventative maintenance cause my car sees a lot of track time

Bought a tq wrench and extensions at CT, as well as spark plug gapper and heater hose (for full ps flush). I started doing spark plugs today, but one bad thing after another, I'm now stuck.

The rubber grommet in the spark plug socket would get stuck on the spark plug when I install the new one. Then I figured out I could use the ignition coil to suction the other grommet out.

But everything is still fucked.

The old sparkplug in cylinder 2 is stuck and wont come out, i snapped a bolt for the ignition coil on cylinder 1, and now i dropped my 1/4 ratchet with the 10mm on it on my engine splash tray

FUCK ME SOS anyone in Richmond/South Van wanna give a noob a hand tmr/weekend? Will buy you a 6pack (none of that shitty PBR crap)

Also does anyone know if the grounding wire goes before the ignition coil or just in between the bolt and ignition coil?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/da027edd96ac31d03833e6ce0f59344e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/4cda130962a44e0bc492a5906727451b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/3f962d8c27c16800dec6c95caf308677.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/d1f7e4ef8138e934d3acb7e912a8fa2d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/4269cf69ff0022d90c5d0aecbcdf7834.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/6d856ea1a5839d6eaa31e6fb51fc6f9f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/f8851ba43f36b38063a7c0877431f713.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/cebcb769fd7b264d028954d2f56fe597.jpg
