A coil pack went out on my wifes Rav4 a couple weeks back and when I swapped it (with an OE Denso, I try to baby the Rav) the retaining clip on the plug broke off. Apparently it's a common problem.
Fortunately Toyota puts the part number on all of their plugs.
https://i.imgur.com/HFAF78S.jpeg
It's kind of funny that they put the number onto the part that breaks off. All the plugs have the same first 5 digits in the part number so add 90980 to that and you get this.
https://i.imgur.com/YLi3eAl.jpeg
Again OEM Toyota for the wife. The local dealer wanted something stupid like $20 each, from Amayama they were $4. Zip ties are fine for my junk but not on here.
https://i.imgur.com/4hMJeTa.jpeg
Pop that white tab up (again Toyota being Toyota the multi-piece plugs always have multiple colours of plastic so it's obvious) and then it can be de-pined.
https://i.imgur.com/ah2em9N.jpeg
Or because the black plastic is so brittle, just rip it right off.
https://i.imgur.com/m1ucAMF.jpeg
Pop the pin out.
https://i.imgur.com/KQM21TI.jpeg
And into the new plug. One at a time cause I'm dumb and I'll forget the order if I do them all together.
https://i.imgur.com/owW0zxa.jpeg
For the last pin the retaining clip broke off and was jammed against the tab on the pin, so I just busted apart the whole thing with pliers to get it free. These must have been made with a defective batch of plastic or something because even my stuff that's 15+ years older isn't that brittle.
https://i.imgur.com/SGB40d0.jpeg
Push that white centre piece down to lock them all in and plug it into the coil.
https://i.imgur.com/95oo54P.jpeg
And done. I've got one spare coil pack on hand and 3 more connectors in case the others give me a problem (apparently the 2 brown ones aren't as fragile). Weirdly the coil looked completely fine but on very cold starts sometimes it would stop working for some reason and throw a code so I'm not sure what went wrong with it.

Some off-season projects for the BMW E46 this weekend:
- I've had a pretty bad oil leak from the valve cover area on the passenger side. Mind you, I've replaced the valve cover and gaskets, but it was still leaking. I've also rebuilt the Vanos unit on this car, but I've also snapped the Vanos studs before in a previous car, so I was too scared to use a torque wrench with the Vanos nuts when I rebuilt the unit on this car. So I finally bit the bullet and used my 1/4 torque wrench to tighten everything up. I used an OE BMW valve cover gasket and BMW rubber grommets, so we'll see how it goes this summer.
- Replaced the AC tensioner with a "Litens" branded one from RockAuto. When I opened the box, it actually was an INA unit which would have been over double in price. It's a nice surprise when that happens.
- Replaced the oxygen sensors with new Bosch ones.
- I converted the old fan clutch/rad fan system to a single electric fan. Tested the new fan using INPA and it works. We'll see how it goes this summer.
- My central locking system has been acting up for years, so I finally picked up some relays off EBay and found a local guy to re-solder the relays on the GM5. Worked like a charm when I re-installed the GM5.
- Installed a new window regulator. They're a pain to get properly aligned as they're frameless.
Next up before the summer: rear sway bar bushings, auto transmission drain and fill, and brake fluid change.

You almost make me want to work on an E46 again! The memories.
What brand OE BMW VCG did you use? I remember one is particularly bad and tends to leak after a year.
I'm surprised the central locking system relay itself broke. I bought a replacement button - the rectangular piece and that was an all in one fix for $5 or smt.
Window regs I do not miss. Granted.. I did it drunk but still.

Victor Reinz OE Brand is the one I'm thinking of. That one is notorious for failing quickly.
It's a genuine BMW gasket. Not a Victor Reinz or Elring. I also bought genuine BMW valve cover bolt grommets to go with it.
The valve cover, which is CRP, is less than 3 years old and is flat with no cracks. We'll see how we do when I get it back on the road in a couple of months. If tightening things up to spec doesn't solve the leak, I'll be out of ideas.

First time there. Honda couldn’t/wouldn’t do my alignment as they were worried they couldn’t get it up onto their lift.
Not sure why I had to drop the car off when they opened, and had the work done in the early afternoon. And it was a pretty expensive alignment (2.5x Honda). But it’s done now. Don’t think I’ll be going back

I went there once to use a voucher for a free alignment..... Still had to pay some money out of pocket. Car was an all stock crv :drunk: I won't be going back either, not worth the trouble.
Just a guess, but dropping off at the start of the day allows them to control the flow for the day. They get to it when they get to it and they don't lose time with people running late for their appointment. They probably also avoid anyone waiting in the waiting room because when you drop it off early in the morning not knowing when you'll be able to pick it up you're probably not going to wait at the shop for hours and hours.

I had a bad experience with a spring install at Dale's on my GTI in 2018. The guy on the on the phone was going off about how they were experts in suspension work and did work for race teams blah blah blah. It took them 2 whole days and one of the guys working there, Jameison I think his name was, was pretty rude throughout the entire process. It's was first and last time I go to Dale's

I fell for the Dale's hype back in the day on my M3. Similar experience to you.
My Dale's experience was a colossal waste of time and a lie. They did an alignment to maximize your tire life. They didn't need to write an entire story behind it and blow it out of proportion like they're the only shop on the planet who can do alignments. Get out of here!
I'd rather let OK Tire do my alignment (actually the right locations are not bad.)

The three people I dealt with at Dale's were very unprofessional from top to bottom. They were recommended to me back in the day by some of the GolfMKV forum guys. There are many other shops I could recommend that are more deserving of your money than those dirtbags. What kind of "suspension experts" take 2 entire days to install springs on basically a brand new car (at the time).

Zing ! All the bus driving has melted his brain
But genuinely where in my post that was confusing so it looked like I mixed the 2 companies into one. I even wrote Since both are super reputable brands Doesn't this showcase that I know they are 2 different entities?
Furthermore, why would I ask what the weight difference and price difference between the 2 brands if I thought they were the same wheel but just different logos?
All I wanted to say was, they have the same design, but from 2 separate companies, and I wanted to find out the weight difference + price difference. I can then determine which one is better "value" since they are asthetically identical.
What the heck is an Enkei CR Kai Lite?
If you take it out of context sure, like I mentioned, I dont know Enkie wheels at all except for RPF1, if you read my run-on-sentance LOOOL the follow up to this was Sorry I dont know Enkie wheel models lolol. Isn't this statement obvious that I am just poking fun using CR Kai Lite since I don't know what the Enkie model of the wheel is?

Dude the Enkei wheel in the picture has the model written on it. PF01. Lmao.
The Enkei will be cheaper by quite a bit, supposedly lighter (online search shows weights around 16lb for a 17x7 wheel - i.e. Miata fitment) whereas the CR Kai is probably 18lb or so. However the CR Kai is supposed to be stronger and more durable. Neither of these are forged, both are flow-formed wheels.
I think some punctuation or less run-on sentences would have helped. It felt like you were calling them the same company and model and just kind of mashed everything together.

I think it depends on how aggressive your brake pads are. I've only been using Armour Detail Supply wheel coating for the last couple of wheels I've bought. I coated the winter wheels and only finally washed them just this weekend for the first time and most of the brake dust rinsed off with the pressure washer. It didn't take any force or effort to wash the rest of the brake dust off with some wheel cleaner and a mitt. So I'd say a wheel coating is nice to have if you have OEM/street pads.

It depends on the wheel size/design/spokes but I've been able to do 2 coats on one set of 19" wheels or 1 coat on two sets of 18" wheels. A little goes a long way when applying a coating.

I had Gtechniq C5 Wheel Armour on my wheels and they lasted around 3 years. They made a big difference in general cleaning of the wheel - just standard soap and water was enough. I'm now back to using proper wheel cleaner. Carpro and Gyeon both have products that claim they last 1-2 years.
Spray ceramic sealants don't last very long due to the heat of the brakes.

I always coat after the tires are mounted. I find its easier to move the wheel around with a tire on so I can coat the inner barrel and behind the spokes without risking the wheel getting damaged. I also like it with the tire on because then I can clean and prep the sidewalls to accept tire dressings.

I've updated my old cars that had cd players to something with Apple carplay and AA. One was Pioneer and the other was Enkey from Aliexpress....... The experience with Pioneer is much better than enkey. Enkey's boot up time is quite slow (up to a minute), I need to open the radio app every time it's done booting up or else I'm listening to nothing and it sits in the settings screen. And the home screen is kind of similar to yours with map, music and a pic of a car, but the map is China and not a local map. If I want local, I need to go into my AA and open google maps.

A long time ago when we ran into a mice problem in our garage, what worked for me in keeping the mice from staying in my engine bay was -- I just had to keep the hood propped up. Rodents like enclosed space because it makes them safe. By keeping the hood propped up, apparently that was enough to make them uncomfortable.
(A side issue to this was -- with my car at the time, the parasitic drain on the battery is much higher when the hood is propped up. Maybe the ECU won't go into sleep mode or something? At any rate, to keep the hood propped up, I also had to hook the car battery to a battery tender. YMMV)

Worked fine all winter? This is more like V2, the original setup was made up of a bunch of smaller pieces, this is more like one big sheet cut down to size.
I've tried it all, poisons, sprays, traps, can't stop them from going in there. I have catnip planted all over the garden and the neighborhood cats come party at my place but it only works in the summer.. This will just make it uncomfortable to stay and take shits all over everything.
Next step is a full on GridGuard perimeter but I don't want to spend that kind of money on this house.
What is that stuff? It can stay there 24/7 or needs to be put on when parked only? Little pests go under my plastic engine cover, so I removed the cover but they still go to the same spot on top of the engine.

It's just 3d printed sheets of spikes that I cut down to size. ABS to withstand the heat. I just leave it there.

Took the cover and trickle charger off the Boxster yesterday, adjusted the tire pressure and took the car out to the shop for a seasonal oil change and tech inspection. Club race and driver education is next weekend with Friday as a full-on advanced solo lapping, and the first driver education weekend of the season. Was nice to get back onto the road in a manual transmission. I may need new tires mid-season.

I miss that about BMW ownership.
Getting into your car in the morning, your heart rate rises, insert the key, get the cold sweats, and pray to Jesus, Allah, and Buddha that your car will start. And if it does, you let out a sigh of relief and pray again no check engine lights or error codes.
That, or it's just so frustrating, it sits in the shop awaiting diagnostics and parts from Germany. :okay:

I finally found time to wash and swap summers on my much loved but highly neglected GTI. I drive it so infrequently since I got the Miata that I kinda feel bad :okay:

that gti is still best gti
but it makes sense you drive it so little when you've got an open-top experience. it'll take a while to get sick of the wind in your hair and the excellent balance/handling characteristics of the Miata.

today i fucked up:
brought the x5 in for its last paid/included service. i guess i wasnt paying enough attention when i was buying the car. all i heard was blah blah BMW Ultimate Care plan all ur shit is included until ___day. 3 hours in, they called and said the car will be ready soon, u needs new wipers do u want us to change them? they seem ok to me but since its included ya ya ya change that shit. when i went to pick up the car they charged me $112 for the wipers. so apparently its the BMW Ultimate Care+ plan is the one that includes wipers.

Technically not "what did you do to your vehicle today", but rather "what did you do to your dad's vehicle yesterday":
After convincing my dad that it's not safe to drive, and better leave that to me, I was driving back to my parents' place with my dad.
With utmost grace, I reversed his RAV4 into the garage with speed and precision, and then closed the garage door.
We watched in horror as the garage door crunched into the front bumper. Right in front of our eyes.
It hit the car so hard that it stalled and jerked around a bit. In a panic, I hit the garage door button again to open it again.
Crunch, jerk-jerk-jerk.
I looked at my dad. He just had a blank look on his face. I wasn't sure what he was feeling.
I panicked again. BANG! jerk-jerk-jerk.
Finally I gathered enough clarity to just back the car up, off of the garage door.
We went to go look. The garage door had driven a metal tab into the car. The gouges were deeep into the plastic of the bumper.
"Hey dad... got any touch-up paint?"

Personally, I find that they don't last very long. The consensus is mixed here.
Some people here don't bother knowing they aren't very good/don't last long.
Others will use it any way and return them to Costco.
Then there's the cohort of people who think they are the best thing since sliced bread.

Not trolling ... but doesn't your garage door opener/closer have this light sensor which prevents it from closing when there is an object in its path? They don't have this feature in Toronto?

I was wondering the same.
I think in Toronto, these sensors don't exist. Must be from another planet.

I like Edmonds battery if the auto wrecker doesn't work out... if you have a shop account they're usually like $130ish
im assuming the wheel was past the laser so it wasnt tripping the safety, but the bumper sticks out past the wheel so ya

The OEM wipers are worth it. 8 years on the M3 and I am only thinking of replacing them this year.

This was in Vancouver.
I'm in Vancouver right now visiting my parents (and typing this to you all while my dad beats me with the feather duster).
I don't know why the obstruction sensor wasn't working. I can only assume the RAV4's front bumper is higher than where that's mounted, so it didn't trip. And this has probably never happened before because nobody ever backs in. I was just showing off to my dad "look pa I'm backing into the garage because I'm a better driver than you"
smoothie.

Wow, what the hell, ive never had a set of wipers last past 3 years. Usually less once they at least start streaking.
Then again, ive bought many cars where the wipers literally smear shit on the glass, and you can only think "the last owner drove this car, this way, for how long?"
Cue 8 year wipers ^ (kidding)

Dont feel too bad
My garage is sloped towards the door, after doing car stuff i forgot to put the ebrake back on.
I lowered the car on the lift, and once the lift points released off the car, the car drove its self forward. Panic set in quick, but it was too late, lucky me, the subframe of the car dug into the lift, and stopped its self.
Now the car has two nice bent subframe rails
Now the lift has a ""EBRAKE DURRHURR" on paper that covers the lift release

Sometimes the beam just lands in a weird spot. My brother nearly did the same to his car because it goes right through the grille area which is set back a bit from the part of the skin that goes over the crash bar.
