Why is that old cabin filter so long ?!? It’s such a small car. That filter is like the width of most of it.

just wanted to share the results from a 8 hour detail.
decided to go with the cheapest option and went with a single step detail/paint correction. im pretty happy with the results. fingers crossed this is it for the "to do" list for this year. time to just enjoy the car and tackle the rest next season.
pic heavy because it will never be this clean again lol

That looks great. The gray hides your hard work :alone:

I've only ever really did single stage polish on my cars. All my cars are daily drivers and honestly 70-80% there is good enough 120% of the time. It'll only be perfect for like the first day until I drive it to Metrotown and leave it in the parking lot for 3 hours. Plus I never had two days in a row to actually polish it to perfection. 8 hours is as much as I and my back can muster.

Other than getting PPF and ceramic done one the M3 when I got it, I haven't done shit to it other than just wash it every few months or so.

i kinda agree with the gray, id say visually i only see a overall 10% improvement. black and red paint wouldve been the most satisfying transformation and white being the least.

i just want to get it back to 80%. main reason i wanted a professional detail was the inconsistency in shine and light scuffing in the clear coat.

Medium to dark grays are the hardest. White can actually make a difference as the white can "glow" after a good detail whereas the "glow" doesn't really show on a darker car. Even a light silver will glow.

after a proper was with soap, i use a leaf blower too. i let it just air dry if its just a rinse at that point the car is usually "dirty" enough that water spot is a non issue.

Thank god it didn't actually puncture. Too short to penetrate.

Helping my parents sell my high school car because my sister and I have both left the house.
We haven't touched it since Feb.
What does Revscene hive mind think this is worth?

Comps seem to be around the 5k mark with unknown maintenance/carfax.

2006 V6 Accord Sedan

The bad:
211k KM
Scuffs on the bumpers, front bumper has a small crack
Timing belt will need to be done in the next year or two
Glove box handle is cracked, can still open and close

The good:
Two sets of tires - 2019 date code Michelin XIce 3 and Altimax RT43 both around 70%
Clean Carfax and all VIN tags (other than $400 glass claim)

Everything else is super well maintained:
- Suspension: Control arms done
- Transmission: Fluid and filter every year, religiously
- Brakes: Akebono ACT and new discs all around, rear calipers a few years ago
- Steering: replaced reservoir filter + new fluid every few years
- New starter and accessory belt

AC blows strong
Averages 10L/100km commuting around Vancouver
Pretty good 300W sound system
Hardwired dashcam front and rear
Did a paint correction last year, no fading

In this market I think that's a $6-7k car. I would say it's worth about what a similar age/condition TSX is worth and other than the timing belt it's in very good shape. If someone is handy or knows a cheap mechanic they'd be willing to pay more than that.

Insane. Coworker essentially told the 2nd person that viewed the car, this is the price take it or leave it because another person wants to see it in a few hours. The buyer was trying to negotiate on minor scratches. The 2nd person ended up buying it.

Since this thread is often read by DIY'ers, I figure I post it here.

I goofed up a number of years ago and bought the wrong oil filters for my car on RockAuto.com. Turns out early model/transition years of the Scion iM used a cartridge, and later, Toyota decided to switch to a spin-on filter, which is what I needed.

So, with that being said, my loss is someone else's gain. I have four (4) WIX 57064 oil filter cartridges, brand new in original box. Free (including shipping) if you make a donation of any value to BC Children's Hospital, or you buy Badhobz and 68style a bubble tea. :)

Each box comes with the oil filter cartridge and a sealed gasket. Retail value is about $11'ish+ each plus tax, and possibly more.

This filter fits the following vehicle make and models with the 1.8L engine:
2009 and 2010 Pontiac Vibe
2008 to 2014 Scion xD
2018 to 2020 Toyota C-HR
2009 to 2016 Toyota Corolla (1.8L Engine only)
2009 to 2014 Matrix (1.8L engine only)
2010 to 2018 Toyota Prius
2017 Toyota Prius Prime
2012 to 2018 Toyota Prius V

This oil filter is interchangeable with Toyota factory part numbers:
0415203002, 0415237010, 04152B1010, 04152B1010000, 04152YZZA6, 19185485, 415237010, 4152YZZA6, A120E7102S

Been quiet lately. Focus has been under the knife for a while slowly getting things done to help it be more of a track weapon. Picked up a few more garage stuff like shop press, quickjacks etc just to add to the arsenal.

- balance shaft delete, windage tray, added oil capacity
- kw v3 clubsports
- new front/rear LCA’s, toe arms, endlinks etc
- new polyurethane bushings for every single point possible
- new balljoints with experimental LCA spacers for geometry + camber
- billet LCA brackets for stiffness + caster correction
- tune+ titanium exhaust
- rpf1’s + federal fz-201s tires
- gutted rear bumper
- turbosmart WGA, turbo blanket. Retune pending
- coolerworx billet shifter assembly

There’s more to do but I’ve stopped here and it needs a shakedown before I continue. The list doesn’t really show how much work it all is to do in the driveway/home garage. Dropping subframes, cutting, pressing, grinding, drilling etc. but it’s a passion and my time is worthless lol. Save money

Last time I used these guys it was 280. It’s gone up about 100 bucks since 4-5 years ago. Still an amazing job and I’m glad this dude is around. My old tint that they did on the Camrys is still impeccable. Even with the chihuahuas occasionally going nuts and trying to scratch random strangers next to them. You can do that fcp thing where you buy one filter and one oil then ship the used one back and get free oil for life like a true Asian

So I've heard about this for years and as a noob euro owner I wanted to try this out for myself. You can only return used oil after you purchase your second kit. This was my experience, all in USD.

First kit: $73
Second kit: $68
Cost to ship used oil back using USPS from Seattle: $46

So I'll get $73 in credit back after spending $46 to ship the oil, that'd make me up only $27. IMO it's not really worth the hassle of boxing and bagging it up. I've read that people cram oil into the USPS flat rate large box, but that'd only work if your car uses 6Qt or less of oil, otherwise there's no way you're cramming 1x 5Qt + 2x 1Qt + oil filter into the large box. Others have tried. You can also wait and combine returns and ship other small items but honestly after trying it once, I don't think I'd do it again. I miss how cheap my NA Miata maintenance was. I gave the BMW LM oil but will look to see if good ol' Kirkland oil will suffice.

Fram usually has fiber end caps (the cheaper orange ones). A long long long time ago I used to work at a shop and we saw many end caps just straight up fail when we took them off cars.

Everyone at the shop swears by MANN filters.

Is it ? Fuck. I always buy oem parts because I figure it ain’t worth the risk but Toyota oem parts is dirt cheap vs this vw stuff. Like a Toyota oil filter for my ratrolla is only 11 dollars and 8 dollars if it’s for the RX / ES. At that price why bother going after market.

Also is there any validity to this VW 508 oil standard ? It’s forcing me to buy Castrol instead of my usual 0w20 Kirkland oil just because of this lame ass requirement.

I dunno about this VW 508 00 oil standard, but it seems to be the same as the Porsche C20 standard, which seems to be a 0W20 oil standard. With the Porsche C40 / VW 511 00 standard (for 5W40 oil), it is meant to be used in cars that have some sort of exhaust emission control / particulate filter sort of thing. If you were to use the older Porsche A40 / VW 502 00 oils, over time it is going to clog up the emission control / particulate filter, and the darn thing is apparently not cheap to replace.

Those Porsche C40 / VW 511 00 oils aren't exactly the easiest thing around to find, and it doesn't help that a lot of times the retailers / distributors aren't even aware of the difference between A40 vs C40...

If you are going to order some oil for FIY, double check on the bottles / jugs to make sure that they are the right kind that you need.

So all the crap I’ve read says it really doesn’t have any difference in blend over other 0w20 oils but it will be the first thing the dealership checks for (oil analysis) if you have a warranty claim.

Argh that jug of Castrol is a lot more money than Kirkland. I only buy that stuff for the ratrolla.

BITOG forum seems to think the 508 oils have way better shear resistance than other oils (i.e. doesn't thin out as easily)

The performance even with lots of soot is the other part that Traum mentioned.

Ford started switching from timing chains to wet timing belts that also drive the oil pump.
Makes buying used ones a gamble because previous owner probably didn't use the Ford spec oil.

The wrong oil means the belt disintegrates into the oil, clogs up the oil pump, and skips timing.
Must use WSS-M2C961-A1 for 5w-30 or WSS-M2C960-A1 for 5w-20

1.0EB, 1.5EB, 2.7EB, 21+ 5.0, Chevy 3.0 Duramax all have it.
Supposedly reduces timing chain hammering and works for up to 1100HP, but really impacts real world durability.

3.3 and 3.5EB are fine.

I’ve crossed shopped for filters at RockAuto and they aren’t that much cheaper (if at all) versus buying local. After the taxes and shipping, the savings are marginal.

If you can buy bulk filters, you can save a bit, but not everyone has a commercial account.

My only suggestion to Badhobz is to return the vehicle and get a Maybach.

For this particular case, EA888 filters (Mann HU6013Z) are $7.88 each, and shipping is $16 taxes and duties included. If you buy 4 of them, the cost drops to ~$12 each. Instead of $31 plus taxes each.

Generally, I only like the 1QT bottles if I am topping the oil off. It is much easier to stick to a single 5L / 5Q jug for proper oil changes.

Pain in the ass. Book time is supposed to be 4-5 hours. The videos make it look so easy: https://youtu.be/qloWwsxK-nw

Honestly I think you will find vastly difference experiences that you will most defn keep your Celica GT-Four if you went with the GTI route.

I agree with BadHobz, its such a bargain for $500 taxed in for 36 months

But when he dropped by so I could have a go at it... the GTI felt... flat... its good at everything, but great at nothing, it doesn't feel performance-y at all, and I gave it a good go! A very German thing, the thing is fast, but doesnt feel fast. Opposite of Hyundai, feels very fast but not all that fast lol.

Nothing wrong with the car, but you can tell it wasn't built like the Type R, GRC or your Celica per say.

After I drove it, I took BadHobz out in our Kona N, total different experience, good fun for shits and giggles. Wheel hop all day long, pops and bangs (with a warranty), very loud for a stock vehicle, and can all be turned off and go into ECO mode~ The GTI gets no where near the visceral experience that the Kona N offers~

underscore
06-25-2024, 04:27 PM
Unfortunately since we bought a trailer I don't really have the space to comfortably have a third vehicle again, so either the Celica or the Grand Cherokee would have to go. If it was just up to me I'd have like 6 cars lol.

IS300/Altezza is hardly a tin can, my buddy who owns a bodyshop always bitches at me whenever I brought mine in for anything because he said it's like a double redundancy Corolla on wheels... everything he'd have to do to take apart a Corolla he has to do twice on the IS300 and with twice as many bolts/screws/whatever built in.

By modern standards it kinda is, it's still a 3000lb car designed in the mid 90's. Though it looks like they crash tested the IS back in 2002 and it did better than it's rivals from the era. I don't know if they changed anything vs the early ones or vs the Altezza but I'd want a later one either way.

Yes that kona N is absolutely bonkers.

Gti is a mild hatch. Not even spicy. Just like white guy spicy. Kona N is fucking Korean spicy on steroids.

Only problem with Kona N is the transmission is slow. Pop a downshift. Wait a sec and then hear it go bahahhhpapappapaapa. If you don’t like farts. Don’t get a Kona N

If I’d known about the Kona N, I might have taken a second look at it. However no Manuel and that horrible brand association (wife won’t let me buy a Hyundai) ultimately makes it a challenging choice.

Plus it doesn’t help it’s much more expensive than the GTI due to god awful residuals

P.s don’t be a prejudice retard like me. Go give the N products a try. You’ll be blown away. I had a shit faced grin the entire time I was driving that thing. More evidence that upgrades were needed. I had to very slowly get this bolt going with an open ended wrench at a funky angle, until it was clear of the bent lip and I could get a socket on it.

https://i.imgur.com/MYLkLo2.jpeg

New crossmember and skidplate in. tbh I'm not entirely sure why they go through the hassle to make a whole new crossmember, adjust the bracket a bit and you could just bolt the ends under the stock one and save a lot of hassle and expense.

https://i.imgur.com/MAsGKXC.jpeg

Part of the install requires drilling holes to pass the flag nuts through. I didn't have a hole saw in that size, and I didn't feel like buying a whole kit, so I bought just the one size I need. The crossmember has a hole the same size so no center bit needed. So I slapped this bolt in which let me use my impact to do it. Definitely a little sketchy but very effective.

Oil change on the Corolla iM today using the correct filter. :D

Following up to the oil change I did a week or two ago.

The oil change was due as per maintenance schedule (8000KM or 6 months, whichever comes first.) This was in preparation for a road trip my wife and I just got back from. We went to the following places:

Cincinnati, OH
Williamstown, KY
Richmond, KY
Corbin, KY
Columbus, OH
Pittsburgh, PA
Cleveland, OH

Overall, an interesting road trip in the Corolla iM. My wife and I took turns driving. We left at around midnight last Friday in order to beat the rush of traffic along the 401 towards the Detroit/Windsor border and arrived at Cincinnati at around 10am or so (with some breaks in between.)

The weather was hot as hell as there was a hot spell coming through the mid west, up into Toronto/Great Lakes area. We stopped along random gas stations along the interstate freeway, such as Loves, Buc'ees (Richmond, KY) for washroom breaks, quick snacks, and to fuel up. My wife joked that this was like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. :peek:

Lots of very friendly American folk, great southern hospitality the further south we went, and polarizing views on abortion, gun control, politics, religion, and issues like gay rights etc. People really make their opinions known out this way.

No real photos of particular interest except for the Cincinnati Reds vs. Boston Red Sox game we went to see at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinatti, and homage to Badhobz where we went to the Harland Sanders Cafe and Museum in Corbin, KY. Fun fact - There was an Indian family in the parking lot. I didn't pick a fight with them because they didn't steal our parking spot.

There was a flash flood on our way from Cleveland towards the Pennsylvania border. It got pretty scary as rain would just envelop your car and you could NOT see in front of you. Took us a while to get back home but otherwise, saw a Subaru and GTI pulled over to the side of the road (premonition for Badhobz?) All in all, good road trip. Never seen as many Toyota Avalons and Solaras in my life. 2600KM later, the Corolla holds up. :fuckyea:

My only real gripe (first world problem) is the engine's displacement. 1.8L CVT isn't all that fun or safe when you're trying to merge onto the Interstate freeway and you've got an 18-wheeler coming up to the side of you at 85MPH.

I checked my tire pressure along the way, and with the heat wave, the tire pressures spiked to 40psi, whereas I left Toronto with 33psi as per factory recommendation. :ahwow:

A few things we learned on this road trip:
1. We can road trip in this car - We need to make it work
2. It's nice to have a bigger car or at least a car with more displacement/power. Would be more comfortable too.
3. Confirmed we don't need an SUV, despite popular demand. I've always been anti-SUV (nothing against anyone who owns one or in the market for one.)

Given this experience, we will attempt to drive to the Maritimes later this summer during back-to-school season. We've always wanted to visit the Maritimes, and felt driving was the best way to explore the country and the other side of Canada. :)

When I drive my German sausage I have a stout look of moody disappointment. Germans don’t like fun ja? Plus you wanna pay special VW oil and 31 dollar filters ?!? Huh ?!? Do ya ?!?

Should've gotten the Veloster N or Elantra N, surprisingly so fun for what it is.

I really liked the GTI over the R though. Felt more fun for some reason.

Why can't you roadtrip in it? We had the same Corolla iM model in Australia and we road tripped in that one. Agreed the 1.8 CVT is weak but mine was a different problem, it had no power in the twisties and the passing zones aren't long enough for it to pick up speed when the bus or RV ahead of you would not slow down so you can get ahead of them.

We originally thought we would need more space to pack stuff we wanted to bring, and really, it boiled down to whether or not it could keep up on the twisties and the passing zones. You're dead spot on with lack of power. Merging and the rolling hills going through Ohio and Pennsylvania was a challenge, and you really had to give it all in order to keep up with the pick up trucks, SUVs, and big rig trucks.

I think the benefit for us in Australia is, well, it's Australia.

They are less insane on the highway because their road rules are stricter than most of North America. Typically the follow a similar car buying pattern as Europe where most cars are of the less power variant. In North America, anything less than 200hp is detrimentally slow nowadays unless you are driving something like a Mini or Fiat 500.

Space wasn't an issue for two adults and we fit our two suitcases in the trunk no problem, that left the back seat for all the regular road trip junk like food and jackets and other garbage.

We'd probably be ok road tripping in a 911 if it's the two of us.

We packed two small duffel bags with our stuff, and two coolers. One to keep drinks cold with ice packs, and the other one with food/snacks such as fruit and whatever.

We ended up buying stuff along the way, so space was definitely not an issue. I think more honestly, security was the major concern as we didn't want stuff sitting visible in the back seat. Trunk was fine because it has the trunk/privacy cover.

I just need a place to vent, so if you don't want to read somebody bitch and moan, please skip.

I had a Miata that I enjoyed a lot, and then my family size grew by one. My criteria for a replacement car was that it had to be manual, RWD, convertible, and seat at least 3. I ended up with a BMW N52 E88. I've never owned euro before because of its reputation for being unreliable and costly to fix. Nevertheless, my choices were extremely limited and here I am. I also like to work on my own cars. It keeps the costs down, and since I work a desk job, working with my hands and taking care of my own car is something that I enjoy, or at least so I thought.

When I bought the car, there were some normal maintenance items due, and everything on this car has just been more frustrating or annoying than I'd like. Oil pan gasket requires dropping the subframe, and I didn't have an engine brace, so I paid somebody to do that. Might as well throw in some new M3 control arms since the bushings were going on them anyways. Of course, this means needing an alignment. I take it to the shop - sorry buddy, your tie rods are seized and we don't carry any in stock. Fine, I'll limp home and replace them myself first before I bring it back.

The mechanic that replaced my oil pan gasket says the starter is probably the top of the list next. I get through this, but not before dealing with a dozen+ different kind of connects and terrible placement of brackets holding a spaghetti of hoses and wires throughout. That back PCV hose clip was the worst.

Next, I'm thinking I'll take care of the valve cover next, but discover the PITA process to remove the valvetronic motor. What the fuck BMW. Okay I'll put this on pause to do more homework and learn about it. Nope. CEL light time. I pull the code, and it's now complaining about the downstream O2 sensor. Fine, I'll order all 4 cuz the others are probably not far behind anyways. Then, after a few days, the light goes away by itself. God damn it, I'll do the downstream ones anyways. I get to spraying the sensors with penetrating fluid, and while I'm down there, I get greeted with a new control arm with some fluid on it. I look up, and the front left strut is leaking. Of course that's not the only leak, one area of the valve cover is leaking more than I thought and I've lost some new oil already because why not.

After ordering around $500 of O2 sensors, I placed another order for a Bilstein B12 Pro Kit and a bunch of other smaller related items. My wallet hurts, but I guess a suspension overhaul is what's next. I can't wait until I sell this thing and get back into a Miata one day. Or maybe I would've been better off with an older E46, or fun car-less for a while.

I didn't know what an M52 E88 was, so I searched it up and the first hit is another guy complaining about his too.

I keep being tempted by BMWs, especially after watching a bunch of M539 Restorations recently and seeing how DIY friendly some of them are or aren't and what the common weak points are. But I've noticed him making comments about random new faults his cars have. If his beautifully maintained cars are still spontaneously problematic then it seems unlikely you can properly bulletproof one.

My wife’s old 128i is dealership maintained. It’s basically perfect. But there’s always 2-3k worth of work on the table every time we go into the dealership.

List of shit I’ve ignored
- strut stops have worn out. Need replacements
- power steering res weeping

And some other shit I don’t recall. Either way about 2k worth of work left according to the dealer but even they told me to ignore this until later.

The power steering reservoir leaking is common and I have it too. I normally take exceptional care of my cars but this hasn't even registered on scale of crap these cars produce. If you end up doing the bump stops you might as well replace the struts too while it's taken apart. If they're the originals it's probably a matter of time before they leak. I love that a dealer maintained that's "basically perfect" has a never ending to-do list.

So far my experience of a surefire BMW experience are leaking rear diff seals, at least all the modern ones seem to do it. The M3 is a known common problem, but mine just doesn't have enough mileage for it to happen. The X3 had it done, and I'm expecting the X5 to have the same problem.

Mmm...delicious. :drool

Got my Boxster back from Mantis Autosport. Had to get new coil packs as the ones in the car are likely original and totally cracked. :okay:

Oil changed to Mobil 1 0W40. I normally run Motul 5W40 but found some Mobil 1 on sale for cheap and decided to save the Motul for another season. I also switched over to Millers transmission oil. Waaaaaay smoother than factory transmission fluid. The hype is real.

Brakes - switched over to Hawk DTC-70. Initially, no impressions until I held on to it, and then the loud squeal happened as to be expected on a track/race pad. Fresh flush of Motul RBF600 too.

Battery was now 8 years old and failed a load test, so that had to be replaced.

Did a compression and leak down test for peace of mind and came back with the results:
Cylinder 1- 8% -160psi
Cylinder 2- 10% - 155psi
Cylinder 3- 10% - 150psi
Cylinder 4- 9% - 150psi
Cylinder 5- 9% - 150psi
Cylinder 6- 8% - 145psi

Car hasn't been driven in a while so hopefully the numbers even out a bit more throughout the season, but I'm not expecting much change. Numbers are all within spec, so all is well. Gotta redline the motor more and give the fanboys a heart attack.

The most interesting change was the switch from the Koni Special Active shocks on H&R lowering springs to MCS coilovers. Initial impression is the car is much more planted to the ground, and shock/rebound really showcases the chassis a lot more, and control is a lot smoother. Granted, I only drove from the shop back home in bumper to bumper Toronto traffic, so I'm looking forward to the next track weekend in August. Unfortunately, I got COVID, so I decided to bow out of this weekend's track weekend with the local PCA group. :okay:

It’s really risky business buying unknown cheap fabric if you’re paying someone to reupholster something. Next thing you know it fades or tears the next day

Good point! I guess it wouldn’t be bad idea just to get a sheet and leave it out in the sun all summer and see how it holds up and do some stress testing.

I think they make suede/alcantara with the adhesive backing for diy trim pieces.

I bought a set of those knock off sets and the fit and finish was terrible.
Really? Do u remember the brand? Mould King was pretty good but they’ve shut down and came back as something else because they kept getting sued by lego hahaha

Depends what it is. Glue is used to hold pieces that don’t have stretch, or to conform to inside curves. I picked up some upholstery glue from this place a few years back. A couple white ladies working hard and sniffing fumes all day at this place. They use good products (I needed a tiny bit and it only comes by the gallon, he said bring a small container) lol.

it came with the most garbage tape in the world that I just threw out. I used 3m VHB (very high bitch) tape and its on like a rock.

Like I said, aliexpress shit is hit and miss, but most of the time it'll surprise you. The quality, the shipping, the overall color match is quite good. What is absolutely amazing is the stinking price

20 bucks for the wing, 40 dollars for shipping = 60 bucks to GET THIS ricey ass wing!? come on, who would say no to that?

Soon im going to get some side skirts, and front splitter from Ali and stick it on.

Did you just double side tape on? From my experience dirt, uneven surfaces doesn't really work well, unless you stick on smooth painted areas, but then that's still a maybe with gravity working against you

Yeah it's been a pretty good car to me. Still scratches that itch, even though these days it only gets driven once or twice a week on nice days. It's my "take kid to soccer practice saturday car" (until the Mustang's done). Although my kid has his mother's tachophobia. Little bit of throttle and I get a "Daddy Too Fast!"

What amazes me the most is 15 years, 115,000kms, and I'm still on the factory clutch & rear brakes lol.

So glad I talked myself out of the Cobalt SS I wanted back in the day, I would have regretted that junk to this day.

Had one for a couple years and it was a great little car except for the leather seats which were cheap as fuck and super slippery. IMO, back in it's day it was far ahead of the competition then as the Civic is now ahead of their competition.
