That's not what I meant. I meant the whole lowering thing which to one issue to the next. Like I said its probably cause I don't know what the end game would look like assuming someone else has done this before. Unless pioneer...
Definitely not pioneer. My Element is nowhere near as low as some of the ones across North America or in Japan...there's two on bags and a couple others completely slammed and static in the US and Japan.
This is as low as the tein coils I have on will go. Don't intend to go any lower as I am scraping a tiny bit already.
Also why not, low is cool. Rustling jimmies is my favourite thing to do :troll:

I went to saskatchewen for christmas and came back to find some deep rust around my wheel well. I have limited tools so I spent a good 2 hours sanding the rust down. My wrist was killing me afterwards. Then it started friggen raining so I had to wait half a week before i could primer it. Then it rained some more. argh. This was obviously quite awhile ago...

I tried wet sanding a few times in the past but the 3M kit seems to work better for me.
Looks great Mike! By the sounds of it though, it seems like this is an ongoing issue? If it does fade again, you might want to consider yanking them out, sanding them again, and clearing them yourself.
I did that last summer using this stuff (https://www.kmstools.com/car-system-2k-aerosol-clear-coat-18651). It is extremely expensive for just one rattle can and it has a very short shelf life once you pull the pin on the hardener, but it is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

Installed my new head unit. Did it earlier this week but haven't been on the computer for a while. We're on our electrical course in school so I asked the instructor if I'd be able to do it in class. He said yes, we got the old one out (MAJOR pain in the ass, thing was wedged in there damn good), hooked up this one, jumped a wire to a different pin in the connector and bam, Bluetooth in my 20-year old car. Way better looking than my old stereo.

I used 4 cans of red and 3 cans of gloss so the coating was nice and thick and came off very easy. For the small bits between the tire and the lip of the rim, I used WD40 and the dip pretty much melted.

More than I'm used to in other cars, and it is winter so more aqueous phase is expected, but it appears that this 034 can is pretty efficient. The larger the volume of the wet stuff and the paler the sludge means you are condensing more of the crankcase vapors. If you are condensing less (so only the highest density/least volative crud instead of range of high density/low volative to low density/high volatile crud), you are catching mainly the densest, worst of the crap and that will result in a much thicker, denser, blacker sludge and less aqueous volume. As expected, it is nasty and smells bad, but not the same pungency I've experienced on other cars and with can contents more like that you are describing. I will report back with any changes as we go into the warmer months.

Got the carbs on, exhaust bolted on. Scared the shit out of me when I got it running and it started revving right up to 4grand, then I realized I messed something up with the linkage. Had to pull one carb and sort it out. After I figured that out, I managed to get it to idle decently. Still need to actually tune mixtures, but I need to insure it and go to a parking lot to rev it up a bit. Drives like poop now. When the weather turns, ill get her back on the road for the season.

Yeah I think a dirty slow idle will do that haha. I think it had it idling at around 700rpm. 850 is it's happy spot.
I actually have my buddy interested in the little 521. The thing that makes me sway away from it is the j15 engine, I thought it had an l16 which parts are much easier to find. Cool little truck though.

Decided I really need to start moving on the Audi if I'm going to ever get it out of the garage. As per typical on this car, I began the weekend with a long list of items I was hoping to accomplish. Then the problems hit. Keep in mind that this is a 1990 Audi, running bunch of european-market-only parts, and turbo motor swap from another rare Audi...one does not simply go to Lordco for bits and pieces. Saturday morning went something like this:
- wrong rear brake rotors, can't mount the caliper carriers.
- wrong front brake rotors, interfering with Porsche calipers
- Spare axles are the wrong ones, which means my torn boot fix wasn't going to be fast or easy.
...so I went to Timmies.
Came back, and decided I'd really rather work on the '58 Beetle...but the Audi is taking it's space in the garage, so I better just buckle down.
Mounted the oil cooler. Made up some oil cooler lines. Discovered that the fittings I have for cooler won't actually fit the lines I have. Son of a ****! Apparently I need to re-think this. Oh, also discovered that the -10AN lines now take up the space I had planned for the electric power steering pump. Arrrggg. Well, the cooler is welded in where it will actually get a bit of airflow, so the power steering pump is just going to have end up elsewhere.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7283/16218066913_b1977003e3.jpg
Figured out the final adapters for the fuel lines, and mocked those up. Despite having a plastic tote full of AN fittings, I seem to lack the 90-deg ones I need to finish this job.
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8641/16651893349_a526dec098.jpg
Took the front rotors over to a buddy's lathe, and cut the diameter down the two-hundred thou so that they'll clear the Porsche calipers. This is a bit weird, as I'm only working on a 'interim' brake solution between the stock brakes (which I don't actually have) and the eventual Porsche 996 big-brake upgrade. These calipers here are 944 rears, which are a slight step up from the stock front caliper, and will eventually find themselves on the rear of this car.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7584/16836951351_e73924d312.jpg
Sorted out the rear brakes, finally. I had ordered in 1996 A4 Quattro rear brake rotors (moved from 4x108 to 5x112 on this car), not realizing that European A4's and NA a4's had different rotor offsets. Took those back and managed to find the correct offset units on the shelf, from a 2007 A4 quattro. Of course the factory ebrake cables won't work for the setup that I've chosen, but I made an educated guess on which ones will work...and we'll see tonight if I'm correct.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7593/16630708987_ec197bd745.jpg
Both front and rear required a small selection of spacer washers to get it all centred and fitting correctly, so it was back to the lathe to make single-piece spacers, which is always better than using multiple washers. Maybe tonight I'll get everything bolted up for good and actually bleed the brake system.

That motive brake bleeder has paid for itself in just two uses…can’t believe I’ve been working on cars for 17 years and just bought one. Brakes pedal feels awesome, and the clutch felt great for three strokes. Then the 25 year old flex line blew out. Sweet!
http://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xaf1/t51.2885-15/e15/11015517_1042319072462153_383943566_n.jpg
After blowing out the clutch line the other night I discovered that replacement lines are no longer available, and they use a 12mm x 1.0 fitting. Now, true, I didn’t check the Stealership for the line, but on a 25yr old car I’m not expecting the dealer to have good pricing! Normally I’d just convert the line to -3AN and it would be a quick job, but the 12mm adapter fittings are no longer made. Gonna have to squeeze -4AN in there, which means the slave cylinder had to come out of the car. Figured while it was out, I might as well make a bleed line that goes somewhere actually accessible.
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8723/16259863863_cc8cfe4558_z.jpg
Then it was time to put the slave back in, upon which time I remembered why I always do this job with the engine out of the car. Finally got the slave in, and then had to wrestle the line onto the master cylinder. This photo shows the access I had available, and that fitting uses a 9/16” wrench.
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8755/16672531987_c6afb246dd_z.jpg
Waiting on one more fitting to finish the bleed line, so it was off to a buddies lathe to an adapter for my intake. The factory tubing coming off the turbo is metric, and all the rest of my stuff is imperial. An adapter made, which I’ll have TIG welded to the elbow. Some more playing in the shop, and the outlet side of the intercooler piping is sorted. Again, more TIG welding needed before it’s truly finished.

went to a mechanic to get work done on the suspension. afterwards the car was farmed out to local alignment shop that is well known here, and they screwed it up. original mechanic ended up having to take it back and fix it his own dime and time even though it was not his fault after the alignment shop said they did no wrong. total time elapsed: half a month.

I had some little scrap pieces of the gold tape left over from wrapping my intake and noted the heater in the TT is quite strong so I threw some on the back of the vent gauge for some extra piece of mind. I wired it to an ignition activated 12V fuse. The gauge was designed to look like oem so I wired it up to the stock dash dimmer and the brightness matches whatever the cluster is doing.http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr330/tasticfoto/IMG_00002970.jpg

Yup, it's an AWE gauge, and thanks! I was anxious that it might be too small since it uses decent sized cutouts to keep the vent functional, and because my eyes aren't great, but it was fine on my test drive around dusk.

With the Audi ready for TIG welding, I decided to spend some time on the '58 beetle project. First up was pulling the fuel tank, draining the brake system and swapping out the brake master which I was sure was bad. Then re-bled the system, and once again decided I'm an idiot for waiting 18 years to buy a Motive Power bleeder. Once the system was air-free, I realized I still had zero pedal...and went back to checking the adjustment of the brake shoes on all four corners. Sigh. I'm an idiot. With the brake shoes re-adjusted I had brakes, and that means the master which is now in the garbage was probably perfectly fine. Doh!
The brake master was the final item to create a running/driving chassis...but the car is still sitting as a bare shell. Buying all the correct interior items isn't in the budget until late spring (stupid Audi project), but I do have black which could be used. So today I got the carpets, seats and half the door panels in. Installed seat-belts, which required custom work since they didn't have them in '58, and then dropped it off the axles stands.
Took it for it's first spin tonight, and tuned the carburetor. Absolutely hilarious. The brakes are exactly as they should be, which means they are beyond terrible. 4-wheel drums, of the narrowest design VW ever had, are (by today's standards) completely useless. But, hey! It drives hands-off straight, and feels every bit as good as a restored Beetle should.

Malibu for filming + because canyon roads, Las Vegas- shooting pre-ban automatic weapons, + Driving a 991 GT3, Gallardo, and 458 on a track, also because Vegas, Arizona/Idaho/montana because why the hell not, Calgary to visit family, then meander on home. Actual trip itself is 5,500km, + driving a LOT in Malibu and general zipping around the various cities, will be close to 7,000KM in nine days.

Finishing up some minor details on the '58. First up was the window regulator on the driver's side. The one I had in the car (rusty version) was popping out of the window channel every time you try and lower the window. A friend came up with a pair of NOS units, so I swapped that over last night. The glass is supposed to come all the way out of the door before you pull the regulator, but I knew I could cheat with the glass all the way up. Unfortunately I'm an idiot and didn't check the clearances well enough when I lowered the glass. Ended up bending the S*** out of the metal channel. Massaged that back with multiple plier sets, hammers and dies...only to discover that the channel is mounted 1.5" too far forward for the new regulator. It works, but comes dangerously close to sliding out of the channel half way up. Sigh.
The clutch cable is too long for the car, which is a bit odd. The chassis is definitely '58, and a change in transmission doesn't change the clutch cable length...so something is peculiar. Even more odd is that I'm using the shortest cable you can buy. Rather than have the clutch releasing just barely off the carpet, I dropped by a buddies lathe and cut up some stainless steel. The spacer will allow me 1.5" at the end of the cable for extra clutch adjustment, and we cut a nice ball seat in the end so that it won't bind up.
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8706/16794010297_5cb07aef39.jpg
The change was instantly noticeable...and much, much better to drive. Worst part is I actually have to work, I want to go on a roadtrip!

Took it for a test ride at lunch with a buddy, pretty hilarious bailing out of the car on the side of the 99 to yells of "Smoke! Fire!!". Turns out it's just the front tires rubbing...

So I took a bit of a hiatus on the Corolla project but just started getting back into it.
Ordered up a new clutch kit, shocks all around, bushings, seals, rear brakes, yada yada yada.
While I was waiting, decided the easiest thing to swap over was the rear diff. (larger, better gears, bigger brakes, better bolt pattern 4x110 to 4x114.3).
Out with the old:

And all back together w/ new u-bolts:

In the meantime, the clutch came in so I was able to send the flywheel out to get machined, lightened and balanced (assembled).

Now I'm just waiting for either the release bearing to come in, so I can get the motor/trans together OR when the front shock inserts get here, shorten the strut tubes to fit.

Flushed the fuel tank on the Audi project, which meant draining about 15L of medium-golden smelly fuel. Once it was done, ran 10L of premium through the system and then finally filled the tank with 10L of premium in anticipation of starting the engine once my stuff is back from TIG welding. An hour or two later, I was thinking "gee, it still really stinks of fuel in here..." Uh, no. That's just that fresh premium leaking out on the floor:

Project Escort has been stripped to a shell in anticipation of the next couple of weeks. I'll be taking over on it starting Tuesday, so more photos and progress on that one to come (even if isn't my car). And by stripped to a shell, I literally mean there is nothing but a white metal shell in our garage now. Starting from the ground up!

The '58 got the door sealed up for moisture, and the door panels installed. I hate the all-black interior, but I figure it will be way more fun to drive the car while my budget catches up to the final interior plans. Found a problem with the window regulators, so I'll be shopping for some used units once again. You can see the splines are too short on the front set, which means for the window winder I can't use the ivory trim circle that's supposed to be there. Grrr.

Got the car aligned at Dale's on Saturday. I need new tyres...so I'll be going back with PSS. Also had them swap the EBC Red brake bads to Girodisc SS pads and Anti-noise shims. I got fed up of the brake noise...ran them when I first got the car with great success and followed the same bed in procedure but they remained excruciatingly loud this time around for some reason despite a smooth rotor surface (pro-cut lathe). Had them flush the system as well...stuck with Motul RBF600
Installed the Binary Eng seat brackets on Saturday with a friend. It was a painless install and one of my favorite mods to date. As a tall guy the evos high seating position made it difficult trying to settle in but I lived with it. I used pressure washer, it probably works the best. But the bottle says pressurized hose is fine too. Just not the hose without a head.
^ what's that dust cleaner called? I have some baked onto my fronts that I cant get off
It's $20 USD. One bottle probably lasts about 5 washes? Worth it cuz it's so easy to do.
https://www.dipyourcar.com/brake-dust-professional.html
Spray onto your wheels (dipped or non-dipped), and let it sit for 2 minutes as it releases all the brake dust, dirt and grime from your wheels. Simply wash everything away and leave your wheels surgically clean. No scrubbing, no hand washing, no wheel brushes, no dirty rags or water. Never touch your wheels again. Absolutely amazing new product - and works exactly as described. PH balanced neutral, safe on all wheel types including Plasti Dipped and non Plasti Dipped wheels.

Short stroke and coilover sleeve mod and NRCA's.
New strut insert is 60mm shorter than stock, so I sectioned 40mm out of the tube and made a 20mm spacer, putting the shock in a neutral position (ie. not bottoming out).
Then I welded on some new perches for coilover sleeves and added NRCA's to get the steering back to proper geometry and add a few degrees of camber (camber plates down the road).

Soooooooooo.....went to see the ITR today since the body shop has had it since July FailFish. I'm trying to get them to fix a disgustingly horrible repair job only to find out that it's just been sitting in their back lot rotting away the past month or so. More FailFish. To top it off it was absolutely COVERED in bird shit. I was just going to take it away from their lot so I could store it inside at my work, our of the elements. Some of the untreated bare metal that they haven't fixed yet is starting to rust FailFish. Went to start it and the battery is dead. Argh!! car is still is their possession and maybe, just maybe, I'll see it this afternoon. Unrepaired of course, but at least I could store it inside. I have had quite the relationship with my car since 2003 and it pains me to be at this point. I feel like I've let her down.
I'm passed mad at this point and pretty much just laughing hysterically about it(while crying inside). The car is almost meaningless to me now and if I knew that the quality of the repair job and time it has taken to get it to this point I would've settled for a payout months ago.
Perhaps not the right section for this rant so apologies if I broke code.

Yes, it has sucked all the way through. The first few months were ICBC deciding if they would fix the car. Once that was settled finding all OEM parts brand new from dealerships cost another month or two, supposedly. Then, once the repairs were supposedly completely I viewed the car and drove it. It operated fine but stuff was loose and rattling. I brought it back and pointed out the 30+ little things that were wrong with it and he said leave it with me. Painted mis-matched, front lip loose and damaged already(maybe they bottomed out somewhere), bolts missing, overspray, body shop dust covered the engine bay, paint cracking already, etc. The list is long. That was over a month ago and it's just been sitting in their back lot ever since. A shop fixing their mistakes costs them money so I'd imagine that's why it's been sitting. Just waiting for a day where he has time to do it. I fear that day will never come. I'll probably just end up complaining to ICBC about the repair and fighting with them and fighting with the body shop. It's been very unpleasant so far and the end is no where in sight.

Finally fixed my driver side headlight. A couple years ago, the driver side highbeam stopped working after an incident on the side of the road on the Sea to Sky. I just lived with it, having only 1 high beam was good enough for me. Then recently, it magically turned on once, and stayed stuck open. It was weird. Finally was able to bring it to the shop today, and one of the pins on the hi-lo beam controller thingy connector doodad was pushed in, so I pushed that back out and it works. Finally I can have both of them working, and no more getting flashed by oncoming traffic for having one side stuck.
Here's a pic, cuz y'all dig that kinda ish, right?

I spent a lot of time prepping and measuring to make sure everything went smoothly. The hardest part was jigging up to make sure the tube was welded straight. Since the sleeve is a pretty tight fit, if the tube isn't dead straight, it won't slide on.

Switched out the almost nonexistent clutch stop. It used to be right against the carpet with only the rubber sticking out. Just took it out for a quick spin and there's a huge difference in every shift and only cost me a couple bucks.
The pedal sometimes slides to the left if I don't step on it from the left though so i'll need to cap another bumper on top. There's still enough distance from engagement point.

Made it to the eighties!!!
Installed the new electronic distributor coupled with a MSD coil.
Cleaned up the mess of wiring and relocated the electric fan relay. Fixed an exhaust leak.
Suprised the difference the distributor made, could be the fact I bumped up the timing a bit too ;)

Its located in the interior right under the spare wheel/tools.

so i pulled my sideskirts today so i could change them and noticed some rust
i started grinding away and that little bit of rust turned into a lot of rust and then eventually it was a large hole
luckily i am in the process of helping the GF out with some body work so i had a few things here to start
after grinding everything away i used por15 brush on rust converter and covered everythign on both sides (pic)
i used wax paper and a rubber spatula to spread some bondo glass around the fragile area after and it really helped strengthen the area (will get pics tomorrow)
to cover the hole i will use a bondo mesh sheet followed by a few layers of bondo glass and finishing bondo and then im using gravel guard on the whole area and then i will put the new skirt on
http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x478/c-scales/20150419_160541.jpg
this kinda got me started on wanting to get more body work done, so later i will get a colour matched spray bomb and tackle a few other areas. i wish i was in the position to fix everything properly but for what i have im trying to prevent further rust the best i can

My 43 year old valve cover was in terrible shape after sandblasting (heavily corroded, some parts looked like lava rocks). I was going to get it wrinkle powdercoated but to prep it properly, by brazing, would've just taken too long.
I decided to fill the imperfections with JB Weld, sand, repeat, then apply VHT wrinkle paint. If I fucked it up I could just blast it and be back where I started. Plus, it was only $10.
I think it turned out pretty decent.

This is my first euro so prior i had no clue on whats what on this car because of that i was very meticulous.
I follow the DIY word for word so it took me close to 3 hours to reach the oil filter housing gasket .lol
Putting it back was easy at that point since you know where they go now.
2nd time around is definitely gonna be faster I actually didn't need to drain the coolant as my tools was able to access the bolts but like i said i had to rely on the DIY for exp.
My advice is get the proper tools to make the job easier
Im actually gonna order this
Welcome to bavauto.com | Media blaster kit - For purchase - Includes media blaster, walnut shell media and Genuine BMW heavy duty aluminum vacuum adapter (http://www.bavauto.com/fland.asp?part=B1100001)
Since im learning that this direct injection engines are notorious with carbon buildup
Knowing the motor is pretty healthy i would want to keep it that way..

It's an early generation 2TG. Basically a 2T/3T (common in late 70's-early 80's Corolla's) bottom end with a Yamaha designed DOHC head.
To put it in perspective, using EG Civic's as an example, my car came as a base model CX with no options, a D15 and auto (3K 1.2L/2 spd Toyoglide), the next step up in drivetrain would've been a D16 and 5spd (2/3TC and 4spd), and finally a B16 DOHC and 5 spd (which is what mine basically equates to - 2TG DOHC, T-50 spd and 4:10/6.3" diff.).
Actually, wait, my car has 1 option...shoulder belts that are removable. :lol
Safety must've been a big concern for the original owner.

While waiting for the filter to dry i looked up the spark plug interval and its suppose to be at 47k miles so i said what the hell close enough.
I caught break on this one dealer wanted 25 a pop per spark plugs luckily lordco carry the OEM plugs and i got a sweet discount on it :fuckyea:
And of course it needs a special spark plug socket tool :rukidding:

Ideally you would wanna do compression test before you buy the car to see if the motor is healthy but it didnt allow me at that time of the sale and i took a gamble!
and the results are....
http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x374/jackp0t_/Mobile%20Uploads/PhotoGrid_1429940565639.jpg (http://s1178.photobucket.com/user/jackp0t_/media/Mobile%20Uploads/PhotoGrid_1429940565639.jpg.html)
A consistent 170 psi! now i can say it was a good buy .lol
I was very nervous when i was doing the test because of my experience with the nsx. Out of 4 nsx(S) that i saw 3 of them had a bad compression test :heckno:
Usually after doing and finishing the job i hate putting it back together but today was an exception i was still riding high on the good compression result .haha

With maintenance out of the way time to mod!!
makes me glad i got a ppi done and the oil filter housing gasket was changed the day before i bought my 335i.
where did you get the special spark plug socket? i will need one of those soon.

Haha. You have valve envy. Were even haha. I also have the lap belt, with what looks like a shoulder harness removed. haha

This is 2nd Euro for me, my first one was a 89 E30 325 and it left me on the highway with a broken thermostat. I should have learnt then.
3 Hours works sounds very good for first attempt. Never hurts to be thorough.
Funny, I have been researching Walnut blasting as well. I read a thread on 1addicts that some guy did a detail diy for walnut blasting, check it out if you haven't. if you decide not to do a DIY, I saw some guys posting on CL offering to do walnut blasting or selling the kit for $200. Then there is a thread on E90 forum that BMW Bellevue does it for 500 and locally its ~700 all in.
Anyways, looking forward to updates to your car, either through DIY or not.
Might as well get an idea what I'll have to do sooner or later.

I came from Jdm(s) that's NA which is pretty reliable in my experience. The jolt of boost in this euro is pretty dang nice so i see why your coming back for 2nds.haha
With that little job i was able to see a glimpse of the other component if they fail or need replacing. The turbos, waterpump, fuel pump, clutch , down pipes etc. They are doable just troublesome since the crossmember/subframe is on the way. Even just to do the oil pan gasket looks like the subframe needs to be drop to get done! Its like BMW plan to do this so you are force to bring it to them or a shop :rukidding:
I saw the DIY thats why i plan to get the machine
See! 700$ is what they want to do mainly 2 things (remove the intake manifold and set the top dead center 6 times to clean the intake valves)
And this is gonna go on every 30-40k
Believe it or not its harder to remove the intake manifold from a honda than the bmw n54 motor.
Just like they wanted 1k to do the oil filter housing gasket job.
No thanks id rather use that money to buy aftermarket parts really.lol
Im actually just waiting for my coilovers to arrive at the border some time this week! I will dive into that job asap
No exp points on that yet but Ive done my brothers MK6 Gti and by the looks of suspension its almost identical so i have a little idea.
Just like you im also just learning along the way

I actually find that my 335i is much easier to work on than my G35.
Exterior/interior lighting, oil change, battery, spark plugs, intake, exhaust, swaybars, coilovers, bumpers, side skirts and everything. I always run into an obstacle when working on my g35 but on the 335i everything is a breeze.
I did the vcg as well and it was easier than expected.
Only thing that was designed idiotically are the headlight ballasts, gotta remove the front bumper to access them.

It's all ready to install.
The paddles are from a G37s, custom mounted onto a factory FX clockspring, and then the factory steering wheel trim was chopped up to accomodate:

Went to NAPA and bought some stuff to do some general maintenance on my car. Totalled about $110 so I asked about a discount I could get from school. He said alright, punched it in, and it totalled around $85 or so. He said "hmm", then punched some other code in and bam, price drops down to $66. Guy says "that's better", so I happily give him my money and leave satisfied. Safe to say I was NOT expecting that. :fuckyea:

Removed my seats and cleaned the interior. Also removed the seat cover and cut up some foam to fill the damaged seat bottom so the cover wouldn't rub the frame. Its very common on e36s to have the frame+jeans+fat asses in the outer bolster over time. It was fucking terrifying taking apart these seats haha.
