picked up these Tesla 19 inch OEM wheels with tires for free. used 600g to polish the curb scratch, then 1200g after these photos, came out great. Now I need to find the matching paint and clear coating

Made a strut bar. Apparently these actually do something in these old cars.
I made it so I can adapt some firewall braces in the future…. And no the strut nuts aren’t tightened, just couldn’t wait for the paint to dry to see what it looks like on the car. lol.
Somewhat reasonable facsimile of your car on todays blipshift t-shirt offering:

You actually didn't really miss out, it's the 2nd set I've bought this year (3 sets of tires for the car) and the other set was much nicer... this guy didn't even answer me for almost 2 weeks, was super hard to deal with (got mad when I couldn't just appear at Grandview+Skeena Chevron in East Van with 15 minutes notice) and 1 of the wheels he just spray bombed in silver paint that I think he then brushed on? For my purposes, I don't really care, but if I get time I'm going to try sanding them down and repainting them properly.

Originally my plan was to clean them up, touch up a couple small scrapes and then paint or powdercoat them. To the plastidips credit it covered up a looooot of small dings and scratches and crap that I'm not sure I feel like taking the time to try and fix. I might just scuff em and spray em and keep an eye out for a better set to have done professionally.

There's the standard places that charge like $300 a wheel..
But I've noticed this kid (I think) in Surrey who spams FB Marketplace and CL like crazy and has an IG account... he advertsises as "rimjobs" or something like that hahaha... he says $350 for all 4 wheels total sanded and painted.
He's got tonnes of photos of finished product and it looks good... I've been thinking of giving it the "fuck let's see what happens, worst possible result is I lose $350 I guess"
Will report back if I try him out haha

I went with the plastidip route with another set of wheels before. Never again... It sounds ideal in theory, but after leaving it on for years, it's a PITA to remove.

For me, it's actually more so that I just don't like the rubbery finish and for the most part, I'm ok with permanently painting wheels or emblems as a tradeoff of a better finish.
At the peak of the craze, I stockpiled quite a bit of cans but in the end, didn't end up using a lot of them, lol.

320icar's photos from pages back, got me thinking to partially restore some of my own paint
After standing at crappy tire, staring at all the cutting/polish/wax/scratch fix/ceramic coating stuff for 30 minutes, convincing myself not to do so, i did so anyways.
Got about 1/2 my car done in 2-3 hours, with a milwaukee 18V drill at half battery.
Meguiar's Quik Scratch Eraser Kit - 30$
Gonna use some jetseal once i finish the rest.
So to update on this....
I havent used cutting / polishing products obviously in some time.....
I got the rest of my car done, with the scratch eraser kit, and in the shade / non direct sunlight, the car looked great.
Then i went for a drive in the sun :fuckthatshit:
The entire car had holograms as pictured on the left
So i went out, picked up some polish, went over the entire car. Returned the chemical guys jetseal, after watching some long term reviews, and its trash.
Then picked up some carpro UK ceramic coating, and used that as a final finish.

Nice... I mean it's not a real ceramic coating but still you will notice the water repellant for sure.
You should take pics of your car out of direct sunlight for your ad, I remember seeing your ad before a few times and before I knew who you were I was like "damn dude wash your car before pics" but it's actually just cuz it's so overexposed in the brightness... throw some tire shine on the tires too hahaha

I'm still just using meguiars hybrid ceramic wax or Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Pro Graphene Flex Wax as they are basically spray and wipe and have like 6 months of durability

BUT - at the rate of my current driving, I don't anticipate another oil change/service till maybe end of the year soooo - it's not bad I suppose. (i can do my own tire rotations/swaps/filter change outs)
They tried to get me into 2022 ASpec Advance -
offered $45000 trade in value on my 2021 Aspec/29000km
but... all paid off, no car payments..why bother?
checked out LEXUS NX300H - as a hybrid option. much smaller than the RDX...skipping.

0.1s per 100lbs definitely works up to a certain point.
Biggest gain i got was from a new trans tune that came out few months ago. My car was lighter last season and my best time was 11.08. So im sure if he had this trans tune few years back that he would be in the low 10s. Also his car was gutted to the last bolt. No dash, carpet, sound deadening, etc. I only got my seats out and a lighter battery.

The Airmiles promos can be quite good at times. For the past 2 or 3 months, Airmiles has been having a $5 + $5 giveaway per month (in Airmiles, of course) on your 2nd and 3rd 30L+ fill ups. So that's roughly $10 saved from ~$180 - $200's worth of gas.

Installed lowering springs, and adjustable rear control arms to get the alignment into spec. Bolted on the wheels that Great68 brought over from the Island for me. The pic in the driveway was immediately after the springs were installed, the car hadn't settled yet, she's down where she needs to be now. It's a pretty conservative drop, just enough to get rid of the wheel gap and maintain a bit of rake.

How's the mpg?
My commute is pretty much all highway driving, and it's averaged 9.4L/100km through the last 4 tanks of gas. The commute is just driving in a line of cars into work and home, there's no point in driving like a yahoo, if you pull out and mash the throttle in the few passing lanes, you just end up 4 or 5 cars ahead in the same line of cars. The Coyote can be ridiculously fuel efficient for a 5L V8 engine but it's pretty easy to deteriorate that number...quickly, after a Duffey Lake Road run to Lillooet it will not be the same result.
The funny thing is that my '18 WRX STI with a 2.5L engine was averaging 9L/100km on the same commute, the Coyote is double the displacement and delivering similar fuel economy. That being said, the EJ motor in the WRX is a dinosaur of an engine, known to deliver crappy fuel economy.

I replaced my mom's Acura auto transmission. Nobody in town has Kooler Kleen so I manually backflushed the cooler with atf and compressed air. Lots of material came out. I just went on Amazon and ordered a same day inline transmission filter, Acura should have put an external filter on at the factory.

Replaced my radiator and expansion tank holder in the E46 'vert over the weekend. I replaced almost everything else in the cooling system a few weeks after I bought the car (expansion tank, hoses, and water pump), but still had a coolant leak. After further examination, I noticed that the original BMW radiator had a leak at the top.
Of course, something had to happen (as it always done when I work on a car) when I re-assembled everything - a plastic o-ring inside one of the coolant hoses fell out when I lubed the rubber o-ring and got lost somewhere between my radiator support and A/C condenser unit. I had to drive to Lordco and drop another $50 on a cooling hose that I just replaced a couple of months ago.

Wrenched yesterday with a few friends from 9am to 1am. We did 3 cars and as usual it took longer than expected. Felt like the good old days with my E46, complete with random problems, dropping sockets into engine bays, and someone saying "wow that was easy" and jinxing us lol.
Did a full fluid flush (trans, engine, coolant, and brake) on my FK8 as well as doing Powerstop Track Day pads front/rear. I made the mistake of buying all my fluids (except for brake) from Honda, I thought it'd be cheaper than BMW, but it wasn't as significant as i thought. Brake fluid I went with SRF.
You'd think by now I'd have invested in a pressure bleeder. Well after doing 2 Type Rs and a Type S, we're definitely getting a pressure bleeder.
Had a few uh-oh moments. Totally thought I was gonna run out of coolant during the bleed. Used 1.5L, took 0.5L out after I was done. Trans flush was pretty easy, except the parts people at Honda had no idea what washers were needed. Honestly, the hardest part about the job was taking out my PRL intake (which admittedly is a bitch) and taking off the oil filter.
Man I miss top mounted oil filters.
On a side note, I bought Honda software onto my Foxwell scanner (had this preloaded for BMW) that I thought would work with the Electronic Parking Brake maintenance mode. It unfortunately did not. It was pretty easy to remove the EPB manually, but it comes at an expensive risk of damaging it.

For those of you who don't know, CTMP is a very high speed track (2nd fastest in North America I read somewhere??) so it's a great place for high powered cars to let off some steam, but for slower cars, a great place to learn and develop. A very humbling experience this weekend.

Edit: Here's another from a photo one of the members snapped and sent to me. This was our first run of the morning and probably my fifth lap around the track. Interesting time the photo was taken. :D (Credit to Roy Ojala. If you're reading this, thanks for all the advice and encouragement!)

That's better than when they messed up the clearcoat on the Boxster S calipers and it would flake and peel off. If they're getting that hot though the shims are probably a good idea for protecting the piston boots too.
After stripping someones crappy plastidip off, then filling some damage with JB weld, then scuffing, then 2 coats of primer, I did the first wheel with 3 coats of paint yesterday. Tomorrow it gets the clear coat, and the other 3 will get the JB weld treatment.

Consumer grade paints are terrible for wrinkling. Basically, the base layer isn't fully cured, so the solvents in next layer, pull up the "skin" and wrinkle up.
My suggestion would be to do the clear, within an hour or 2 after the base coat.
Or wait like a week for the base to fully cure, then apply your clear.
My preference, is to use whatever basecoat, let it cure for a couple of days, then use 2 coats of 2K Glamour Clear (within 30mins-1hr of eachother). Basically, the best clear you can get in a can, with a catalyst. I've mounted tires the next day, no problem.
Side note: it also works awesome for protecting headlights, after refinishing.
What's it doing down there?
Sold for twice what I'd get here lol
trollface
06-15-2022, 07:35 PM
This happens when your coats are too thick and you don't wait long enough.
Temp has a big affect on how it cures, make sure it's warm and little moisture in the air like rain.... run a heater or blow dryer in your painting area.
The coats take way longer to cure and you'll fuck it up with a new layer with fresh solvents.
If you don't want to start all over again, wait a few days then sand the cracks down with a sanding block backed with wet sand.
Feather the edges and hit it with primer/color in those spots. Don't hard mask it with masking tape, you want to blend it all in. Wait and sand it so paint is level to the old paint. Then hit the whole thing with a light coat again.

So during the winter I sheared off a rear diff bolt on the RS. Did a sketchy fix I won’t tell the techs about and sent it ice racing still, but since then it’s just sat in the driveway. Having a 2 year old and shift work means it’s taken 6 months to fix a problem a shop could do in ~8 hours. But I refused to pay that much money in shop labour for a $3 bolt.
Lifted the rs, dropped the entire rear suspension/brakes/subframe assembly to gain access to the diff, Hubs/axles out. With the help of a friend <3 at the machine shop, extracted the bolt, helicoil.. Reverse of install and there yah go. About 4 hours out/4 hours in. All in the driveway…

Also, was this Z4 stored primarily indoors? Or was it mostly left outside and eventually leading to what you've had to tackle? Would you do it again? Inquiring minds are asking. :hotbaby:
Most importantly, did you enjoy doing this? Emphasis on enjoy as in you took pleasure in this.

I don't actually own these two, but I've spent a lot of seat time with them now.
The 2.5i 5 speed is actually a "better" sports car. The top is not powered and overall much lighter than the 3.0.
Both of them suffer from really bad steering feedback. They handle like a roadster, but the steering feels like an IS250. BMW made this sports car for 50-year-olds, and and shows. It's comfortable and a nice cruise. I would say the steering on and FRS is 10X better.
The 3.0 SI 6 speed is fun and rare. It has enough power (255hp) but again suffers from the same steering issue. You can really feel the weight on the 3.0 with all the fancy motors and gadgets. The motor is smooth, the gear box is decent. You can get in trouble with this car.
Both of these cars sat outside. The motor problem is actually pretty common and not due to neglect. Once the tape fails, it will drown itself. Most ppl actually take the pump and relocate it to the trunk.
Would I own one? Absolutely not. I don't have the patience or money for this kind of stuff; I'm just helping a friend fulfill one of his dreams of owning these things. The joy I get is watching him have fun.
They share no parts with any other BMW and replacement widgets are very expensive. They are, however, very good-looking.
They're not horrible to work on if you're a small guy (for obvs reasons). I'm just a hack that works a normal office job, so if me and a buddy can pull this off, I'm sure anyone can.
The 2.5L he bought for $4,200 bucks and has been rock solid as a DD over the past 2 years.

My RDX is quite noisy (road noise in particular) so I've decided to do a sound proofing project on it - trunk, doors, and cabin floor. I've done this before a couple times on my TSX and Miata and have liked the results but I've never done it in the cabin and not with the knowledge I have now of the process. Only got halfway through the trunk yesterday (6 hours) and will chip away at this summer with the goal to get it done before I head to Seattle for summer vacation in late Aug (I hate how loud I-5 is).

Behold my latest exploits:
So Z4 power top is broken and BMW wants to remove the top, drain the system and replace the entire pump unit. I don't even want to know how much labor is as the part alone is $800.
Useless Z4 roof repair info:
Remove the entire pump assembly from the cubbyhole. Turn the unit upside down to prevent air bubbles inside the system and remove the motor and “spacer” held by two hex bolts. Remove the plastic pump gear and the metal shim carefully. Split the spacer from the motor with a mallet and remove the motor mounting bracket held on by two more hex bolts. Go on Amazon and start comparing generic $90 mystery motors till you find one wit the correct shaft length and key grooves. Reverse all these steps and fill your reservoir with jack oil via a bubble tea straw.
You just saved yourself $2-3 grand. Thug life.

the plugs are color coded right now, the left one being white, and the right one being black. But ill go ask my service guys if they have spare male/female connectors and then tape them up with this fancy grease.

Took a couple days off to soundproof the interior of my car. Taking out the interior was pretty easy - if it wasn't for a sticky seatbelt bolt I would have been done in 90 mins. About 40% done with the main cabin - put in sound deadener and closed cell foam today and the next 2 days will be putting in mass load vinyl (sound blocker). Doors will get done sometime down the road.

I've done it twice on other cars - on my TSX it was helpful (doors and trunk) but I only did deadener. My FIL also drove a TSX so we could compare back to back and it was noticeable - it didn't make it quiet but there was a real difference.
I've taken sound readings this time around so I can do before and after comparisons - typically a thorough job leads to 3-5db improvement at highway speeds. I'll know by Sunday how well the floor and trunk work - the doors I won't get to for a couple weekends. I'm hoping I can fit vinyl on the doors as that would probably help a lot but the door panels might fit too tight to the door to allow for it.

I got all my stuff from Second Skin Audio - Damplifier Pro, Overkill and Luxury Liner. I used them years ago on the TSX and the stuff still holds up fine - it's a fair bit pricier than the stuff on Amazon but worth it for the quality.

Ha, nothing here. It's all about killing off road noise for me. The RDX is way noisier than it should be for a "luxury" car - the minute the road surface is anything less than pool table smooth it gets loud. Thought it was my tires but every set I've tried sounds the same.

ive read somewhere that if you spray the wheel wells with sound insolating foam along with the undercarriage, it makes a huge difference in road noise. I think there was a video on youtube about it, but i cant seem to find it.

I put sound deadening mats and fabric behind the wheel wells on both of my cars (Mazda and Tesla). The noise killing very obvious for my Mazda. Tesla is another story when it comes to tire noise, the wheel noise comes from suspension to the chassis. nothing much can do about it.
definitely the first thing you should do with noise.

It was surprisingly easy to get the interior out - other than a sticky seatbelt bolt everything just popped out with no broken clips. Took just over 2 hours. Getting it back together again will be trickier - the tolerances are pretty tight with and I'm basically adding a 1/8" of material everywhere so some stuff might be a bit jammed in.
re: Wheel wells - yeah, there's spray on deadener available too (https://www.secondskinaudio.com/sound-deadening/spectrum-liquid). Depending on how well things go I might do that too - the rear wheel wells have OEM deadener on it but the fronts are hard to get to from the inside.

Got the interior wrapped up this morning and managed to put the interior back together smoothly - nothing broke, it all clipped back together like normal and the interior looks exactly like it should (normal). 16 hours of labour - if I weren't so out of shape I think I could have done it in 12 hours or I would have done an even more detailed job.
Except disaster strikes - the car won't start now. I had the battery disconnected for the two days (I was advised to do this as the seats were being taken out and the airbag sensors might trip) and now the immobiliser isn't letting it start. It seems the immobiliser may have forgotten our key fobs - the fobs lock/unlock, car cranks but the immobiliser won't let it start. Talked to the dealer and now I need to get it towed in for a look. Fuuuuuuu.
The doors aren't done yet but I'll share sound level results once I get the car running again.

If you've got a scanner check for codes, it might give you something specific that it's unhappy about.
I'm starting to dislike Lordco. I threw a belt off my hatch last night, common belt size(4pk820, well 805-835 would do). Even the tiny local Napa store stocks it but they're closed today. Guy at Lordco didn't have it so I got the next closest length he said he had(too long). I swapped on another used belt from my parts hoard and will return this belt to Lordco. The kicker, $16 no discount at Napa and $35 with my discount at Lordco. No wonder I order so much stuff from the USA.
So I work on the TSX instead, valve adjustment, new vtec seals/screens, valve cover gasket and grommets. New ac compressor should be here tomorrow. Something like 345k kms on it, it runs mint and looks decent. But I find I've been spending a fair amount on parts lately.
5pm now, Lordco is now closed.

I'd been dealing with an annoying squeaking that would only happen when I had been driving for a while. Once it was parked for a couple minutes it would go away, so I was having a hell of a time tracking it down. Finally it got bad enough that it was always there so I was able to determine the ball joint in the double cardan of the front driveshaft was fucked. The u joints weren't doing much better. Some brute force and ignorance got it all apart.

All good and thanks for the offer - had it towed for free and the dealer figured it out. Apparently having the battery disconnected for so long (2 days) led the car to go back into "Delivery" mode where it had no brake pressure so it needed a really hard push of the pedal to trigger the immobilizer correctly. Dealer (Burrard Acura) didn't charge me for the trouble and had it resolved in a couple hours (always been very impressed with the service I get from them and I've been in a lot with the RDX).

Yeah, sounds weird. I looked it up and it might be because the RDX uses an electric brake booster so without any juice it lost all pressure in the brake system - enough that normal pedal pressure wasn't enough to trigger the immobilizer.

Did you leave the binder clips on? They rust after a while, can't remember if it's the black portion or the silver. You can remove the silver portion by pinching them.

How secure are a dozen binder clips though? I'd be concerned with it wiggling off at highway speed wind and vibration.

Geezus I'm not that much of a hack. They were used for mockup placement so I could mark where to drill the holes for the proper brackets to be mounted :lol

Did a mid-interval oil change (15k km is too long imo especially if you drive hard or track). Overfilled it a bit because no physical dipstick. Will have to suck some out later.

Not really looking forward to changing the rest of the interior pieces to the brushed aluminum trim
Does anyone have a lead on someone that can refinish these pieces? Drivers arm rest piece is rougher than I'd like. Not sure if a wheel refinishing place can do it?!

Me = all the volts.

Haven't done it to my vehicle yet, but been working on the finishing touches here.
Still haven't done any fine sanding on the loose lip. They were all spiderwebbed with darkened clear and black overspray on the lips before. Not willing to put the time in for mirror polish lips or anything probably. The car isn't nice enough for that.

Audi calls for 15k between oil changes. I do one in the middle for a 7.5k gap between oil changes.

I had a friend build an adapter for my old brake lathe, to help with assembling and polishing wheels.
I also want to make it so the cutting head can cut at the drop centre, then I can band some steelies.

Time for an engine swap? :fullofwin:

I don't think the 7th gen Celica is a very swap friendly car... there weren't that many of them to begin with and it had almost no tuner support compared to the Honda equivalents at the time.
Even a 2ZZ would probably be very difficult. Need another cockroach motor I guess. The one I put in it from JK Japanese sure didn't last long.............. a year / 8,000kms? Poof.

Is the 2ZZ-GE susceptible to the same issues as the 1ZZ? I recall they are known to leaking oil and sorts of related issues but otherwise they are generally reliable, no?
Badhobz
08-29-2022, 07:31 AM
ive read that the biggest issue with the 2zz was the oil pan. If you replace it with the 1zz oil pan, it'll solve the issue of oil starvation when you corner too hard.
edit: Also oil pump it seems
"Consequently, it is impossible to "over-rev" the engine with the throttle alone; a downshift from a higher gear must be involved. A typical "over-rev" can damage the oil pump, commonly disintegrating the lobe ring, resulting in damage similar to the picture at right. The oil pump is the Achilles heel of the 2ZZ, though incidents are rare and usually occur due to fault of the driver. Even the briefest period of oil starvation is usually fatal to this engine design."

That's not very comforting since cornering too hard is (I think) what finished off my 1zz... and there's a kit to address oil starvation issues on the 1zz too lol
What they're talking about above on the 2zz was a common issue back when these cars were new... the GT is a 5 speed and didn't have the issue (although, as a n00b I almost did it once myself)... but the GT-S with the 6 speed transmission was highly susceptible to a 3-2 shift when you meant to do 3-4... obviously when you're sending it that is NOT a good thing.... 11,000millionbillions RPMs is RIP on any engine
