I popped a dashcam in the Grand Cherokee, which was quick and easy thanks to no pillar airbags. There's a big puddle of fluid under the transfer case though, so I get to wrestle the drive shaft back out, again, and deal with that.

Huge thank you to RS's own Simplex who happened to have an E36 drivers side mount. I'd started w a pair of E46 mounts but just couldn't get the driver's seat positioned correctly. The correct mount got it into the right place.

Bottom line: installing after market seats is a bitch. I spent way more time and almost as much money sourcing the mounts as I did the seats.

They're awesome though - stoked on the period correct fabric, that kind of matches my mismatched interior already

Nah, I mean you have go through the entire effort of raising the car and removing the undertray what's an extra couple of minutes to fiddle with the cartridge filter?

Plus, seeing blown up MZR engines with spin on filters doesn't really give me much confidence for an engine that's already picky about oil flow (like in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl36horjEOc)

Solid day.

Changed my oil with the proper oil filter wrench for the s2k.

Learned how to use a two post lift - bay rental with tools and ASE certified mechanics to go to for advice was $20 for half hour, or $47 for the hour.

Next Time: Doing oil, diff fluid, and pads.

Question: What kind of a bleeding tool should I get if I want to be able to bleed my brakes by myself at the track side?

I guess I have no choice, this w209 was originally my wife’s vehicle. After having a kid I took over as daily. I am familiar with MB platform, since it’s a 2004 whenever there is part replacement I tend to modify it. I just like to work with what I have. Good question maybe my next purchase should be on something more sporty platform or more accessible to mods.

Balls still tender hours later. Good thing I already have kids!

Put a new battery in the gsxr, installed a oem type rear fender and pitched the tail tidy in the bin, motul oil change. Yes my garage is a mess. I still need to aim the fog lights and roof lights, but the results seem promising.

I'd also gotten tired of the reflective triangle we need for the TSD events just bouncing around wherever. I chopped up the old seat bracket I had kicking around since I have no idea who made it and therefore don't trust it as an actual seat bracket, flipped it around backwards and clamped it down with the seat mount bolts. A couple of velcro straps and on it goes.

You know your shit! A+++! :D

I originally got some low profile ramps for light maintenance but even that didn't work. Bumper would scrape like a mother. I few jacks I bought advertised as "low profile" would barely fit despite doing homework on the specifications in advance, so I wasted a lot of time going back and forth to various stores. After all that, I said F-it and ponied up for the DK20Q knowing that it works.

If it means anything, the car is lowered 1" from factory height. Rear toe is maxed out and extremely limited once lowered, so the only way is to get aftermarket adjustable rear toe control arms. :okay:

I got annoyed with the oversized spare tire being jammed at a weird angle in the spare tire well that was too small and making my trunk pretty useless, so I made a hitch mount tire carrier. I just need to add a piece to limit how far down it can swing and stick the license plate on the spare when the light I ordered arrives. Eventually I may also eliminate the spacer but that'll take a bit more fab work. The nice thing is all I have to do is loosen the ubolts and remove one bolt and I can use it as a bike rack again. If anyone's interested in how it's put together I can post the specifics of how I made it but basically it's a bike rack with a piece removed, a spare tire mount for a trailer, and a couple extra bolts. Everything I used is rated for much more than the spare weighs and I shortened everything which in theory increases the capacity as well.

https://i.imgur.com/PLBF9t2.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/bbzmiKm.jpg

In the default position there's loads of clearance to the glass

https://i.imgur.com/3gezBtx.jpg

I drilled two move holes in the hinged piece so it can also be locked a little closer in which is really just because I think it looks nicer.

https://i.imgur.com/ixxvBuF.jpg

The only downside is now the hideous spare rim (that I only bought because it was $20) is now visible. I need a better spare or a cover or something.

Plates to be unobstructed
3.03A number plate must be kept entirely unobstructed and free from dirt or foreign material, so that the numbers and letters on it may be plainly seen and read at all times and so that the numbers and letters may be accurately photographed using a speed monitoring device or traffic light safety device prescribed under section 83.1 of the Act.

not only that,

Licence plate lamp
4.16(1) The rear licence plate of a vehicle must be illuminated by a lamp that is capable of displaying only white light so that the numbers on the licence plate are legible from a distance of 15 m to the rear of the vehicle.

(2) The lamp required by subsection (1)

(a) must illuminate whenever the headlamps or parking lamps are illuminated, and

(b) must not project white light to the rear of the vehicle.

Yeah that's why I ordered a license plate light, once that arrives I'll make up a bracket to bolt it all onto the spare and plug it into the trailer lighting. There's a big plastic center cap on the spare so I'll just bolt it straight through that. I don't drive it much so for now I'll just risk it, my coworker has had a huge bike rack on the back of his 4Runner for the past 5 years and never had an issue so hopefully I'll be okay.

As some of you know, I picked up a ‘10 STi to be the new daily. High km’s but she is worth saving. I’ve been busy prepping the RS for the track days so the STi has just been sitting in the driveway. Finally had time to wash it.

The paint is absolutely hilarious. Every panel has scratches or dents, the hood/roof has Celtic levels of freckles, the bumper has been sand-blasted so heavily that I’m not even sure how much paint is even left... after washing the exterior it still feels like sand paper. Needs a clay bar, aggressive cut polish and some sort of sealer to even begin to assess the damage. It’s too hot to do that anyways so I started on the inside. Got the trunk done but the seats will need a deeeep soak and steam clean

This is suppose to be a daily driver, but I feel I need to do this car right and save it if I can. There’s no way I could ever afford to own another STi so I should probably try and do right by this car

Story time. A while back, I went to put my kids car seat into my Grand Cherokee and realized there's no rear anchor points for them. A bunch of digging and I found a TSB that says Chrysler should install them for free into any Jeep (and a bunch of other Chrysler vehicles) that don't have them. Cool. I call the dealer, and the kit for mine is discontinued. I call another dealer, same thing.

I do more digging and find a copy of the TSB with the actual part numbers for all the kits. There's 1 for each interior colour, duplicated with unique part numbers for the US and Canada, so 4 total. It seems odd, but I figure maybe the Canadian ones have French on them too or something. I send those to my buddy who works at a Chrysler dealer and tell him idgaf what colour they are, I just want any of those kits. He says no dice, all parts NLA.

Yet more digging, I'm firing part numbers into everywhere I can find and expanding my search to add any part numbers that supercede the ones from the TSB. Barely paying attention I search for a "new" part number which is actually the same as one of the other ones, but without the leading 0 that Chrysler uses. I find someone on eBay selling NOS parts that lists the part numbers without the leading 0, which is why I didn't find it before. They happen to even have the correct kit for mine, Canadian spec in taupe, with a generic picture of some car parts.

At this point I don't even know if this is legit or not but I say screw it and order it. I figure worst case I can report it and get my money back. It ships without being cancelled, and I get excited. It bounces through the stupid eBay shipping depot in Kentucky. Today it arrives. I'm cautiously optimistic that I actually got what I need. I pick up the box, and it's suspiciously light for something that should have metal brackets in it. I rip it open, and see this.

https://i.imgur.com/0kzCejz.jpg

Just the trim covers, and instructions, no brackets. At first I thought maybe I accidentally ordered just the covers, but the instructions say "child seat tether anchor kit". Okay so maybe the kit was missing the brackets and that's why it was NOS? I can probably get my money back if that's the case. I decide to read the instructions and see this part:

https://i.imgur.com/GUSUJWH.jpg

The brackets and bolts are only included in US packages. The fuck. If I need to order the brackets separately for the Canadian kit, why was the part number not listed with the TSB? I figure I'll see if the instructions list it somewhere. I'm going along when I see this note:

https://i.imgur.com/2JxB8ZX.jpg

At this point I'm lost for words. I don't really believe this can be real so I cut out one of the templates, grab tape, a box cutter and a sharpie and head outside. After some cutting, the moment of truth.

https://i.imgur.com/eMNH4nF.jpg

You've got to be kidding me. I did both sides and popped the covers on and it looks like it should've if Chrysler didn't neglect to install them for some bizarre reason. I would've been fine without the covers, so really I just wasted weeks to get a template on where to cut a hole, which really should be available for the dealers to just give me now that the kit is NLA.

https://i.imgur.com/3Xv0xAN.jpg

Whatever, it's done now. I'll be scanning a copy of the template so if some other poor SOB stumbles across this they can just print it and go.

So my secondary butterfly valve for my air intake on my GSXR is throwing a fault code 5% of the time, dailying everyday and the error code pops up maybe once a week.

C28 - for 2005 GSXR600

A quick google search reveals that it is a common problem for my generation as the stepper motor for controling the valve is directly mounted to the motor and the solder points to the pins like to shake it self apart.

2 youtube videos later (seems easy enough... like literally 6 screws) re-solder and voila...

F***ing it's always the last stupid screw that gets rounded.... thankfully there is enough meat on the screw head that I managed to file it into a flathead.... (couldnt imagine what I will do if it was beyond saving.... the part is between the gas tank/air box, valve cover annnd the main structural frame... (probably would have needed to hoist the engine out loool?)

https://scontent.fyvr4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/218056265_525604238892288_5421035784978642632_n.jp g?_nc_cat=110&ccb=1-3&_nc_sid=8bfeb9&_nc_ohc=ZChQzfFhIkoAX8pQ-bh&_nc_ht=scontent.fyvr4-1.fna&oh=e4bb1b270aaae9010cd7f6e62cd10ba1&oe=60F3CCD4

almost 2 hours later... (which was suppose to be a <5min job), the part is out... in my hand....

https://scontent.fyvr4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/218253543_525604278892284_661147105883987916_n.jpg ?_nc_cat=103&ccb=1-3&_nc_sid=8bfeb9&_nc_ohc=sdyz7NB8UUcAX8EUSiF&_nc_ht=scontent.fyvr4-1.fna&oh=0edead895f016fb247a6a020088d4550&oe=60F347F4

Thankfully just as the youtube vids described, the pins are loose whore like to the circuit board.. so it is defn a faulty connection....

the "easy" fix would be just to clean up the points and re-solder the PINs to the board...

https://scontent.fyvr4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/218307569_525604318892280_8658646317839830930_n.jp g?_nc_cat=105&ccb=1-3&_nc_sid=8bfeb9&_nc_ohc=Sv193ntS7WkAX_evVvY&_nc_ht=scontent.fyvr4-1.fna&oh=deeeea2072e695e33dded1f508a714ca&oe=60F28E33

but further research suggests that the best way to "perma-fix" is to directly connect the motor joints to the PINS via wires, this way it is no longer a solid direct connection and the "soft wires" should act as a buffer/dampner between the PINS and the motor...

Should look something like this (youtube screen shot)

https://scontent.fyvr4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/218101512_525604368892275_762631087039594560_n.jpg ?_nc_cat=111&ccb=1-3&_nc_sid=8bfeb9&_nc_ohc=i8CzloXY4AIAX-9m0wI&_nc_ht=scontent.fyvr4-1.fna&oh=24a448d50e6d5cfbffbb012459dfd0b0&oe=60F32E68

Had no supplies on hand, so hopefully I can do the perma-fix tomorrow and be riding again on Thursday/Friday LOOOL, also need to find a new screw...

hahaha... yea....sigh.. so much for the
- 5 min removal
- 10 min solder
- 5 min assemble
< 30min all in fix....

I spent 2 days degreeing my cam last week, as I lost a valve spring restainer lock down the timing chain hole. It fell into the timing chain which took a while to find. Finally found it and dropped into oil pan. Then pull the oil pan in the car. Not fun for a 1 degree cam change. Hahaha.

The strap style mount that I bought for the extinguisher was too small, so I hacked it to bits and chopped up some other spare brackets I have kicking around and made this.

And installed

https://i.imgur.com/kSxM583h.jpg

I had to push it further back from the mount than I was expecting, because of how low the seats are. I wanted the passenger seat to still be able to go as far back as possible, as my codriver is taller than I am.

Took the RS out for some autocross at mission kart track, was a lot of fun and I enjoyed that style layout more than just the big skidpad with cones. I’m not an avid autox guy so I’m not very good. Here’s a shit dashcam vid of my fastest run of the day (but not the smoothest, it was pretty sloppy). 42.4xx seconds, which just got my goal for the day of under 42.5.

Yeah it’s pretty amazing stuff. Just a brush to knock any loose stuff off and brush it on. They sell a “prep kit” but it’s pretty much just degreaser, only necessary if you were doing subframes or rear diffs that might be oily.

What a day. Car started running funny on my way into Coquitlam. It started driving like I was lugging every gear, but I wasn't. No power between 1.5K - 3.5k rpm, felt like it was hesitating / chugging. Above 3.5K car sounded fine, but still low on power - doesn't pull like it should. It felt like putting 87 in a car that takes 91 or driving a BRZ uphill in 2nd LOL.

Car sounded like it was knocking.

Drove to Canadian Tire and sent a friend in to buy oil to top up 500ml. Meanwhile, I started checking the spark plugs on the back two cylinders where I heard the noise coming from. They were fucked. Covered in oil and burnt. Sent another friend in to buy spark plugs. Ended up doing all my sparkplugs in the parking lot of Canadian Tire. I really appreciated the fact that I bring my 3/8 stubby everywhere. It made my life a lot easier.

I thought it fixed the problem, but once the car was at operating temp again, problem came back. I took it to a friend who knows S52s, and it turns out it's a HUGE vaccum leak. We took off the oil cap and it did absolutely nothing in terms of running rough. We checked every coil pack. #2 doesn't seem to work and #6 it starts smoking. We're suspecting a huge valve cover gasket leak that drips on to the exhaust manifold, which also has a leak.

I guess I'm now committed to working on this car.

working on the MR2.

I swapped a working wiper switch(old one wouldn't park), swapped in a new to me combo switch base(tow driver destroyed it?).

Removed HID stuff, trying to decide on led housings or glass housings with replaceable bulbs.

Repaired some more broken interior plastics, this old toyota stuff is really bad. Makes an old civic look like a premium automobile.

Did my VCG over the weekend. Pretty straight forward job. Rounded out the back valve cover screw tho. Couldn't fit anything in the back, not even a 1/4 10mm with a knuckle extension.

The VCG was surprisingly fine, but I had a lot of oil in the spark plug sleeves. No issue with the gaskets tho, so I gotta investigate that further. The bolt gaskets were hard as rocks tho, so at least that job wasn't a total waste.

VCG was leaking, but not sure from what. It unfortunately didn't solve my limp mode issue, but reduced my vaccum leak. Now pulling the engine oil cover cap off actually makes the car run like there's a vaccum leak.

Limp mode issue feels like a misfire, it's like chugging between 1.5k to 3K. Above 3K it's fine, but it's as slow as a D series Honda. It feels like you're going up North Road in 4th gear, but you're actually in 2nd. Further diagnostics required.

Not exactly the same as wrenching or troubleshooting, but spent Sunday at Circuit Mont Tremblant with Porsche Motorsports and Rennsport Region PCA club. Great event and great track. If any of you ever go to Montreal or Mont Trebmblant, I highly recommend getting a "arrive and drive" package with the track. You track guys will absolutely love this track.

99% of cars at the track were modern PDK cars and they obliterated a small handful of people with a manual gearbox (cup cars excluded.) It was pretty discouraging haha

Further diagnosis showed that coil #2 was pretty bad. Unplugged it and it did nothing. #4, #5, #6 is pretty strong. #3 is suspicious and #1 is okay.

I fortunately still have the 330 around.. still gotta send that back to ICBC. But swapped the coil pack out from that and into the M3. Fun fact, M54 and S52 coil pack is the same. And voila, it worked.

Thank god it's not rod knock, rod bearings or bent valve.

My shxtbox was having some difficulties shifting from 2nd to 3rd under hard acceleration at the track last week. Thinking back, I think the problem seems to have occassionally cropped up earlier this year under similar circumstances, but it was happening more frequently last week. The problem doesn't occur during regular street driving.

I suspect the engine mounts are starting to go, so I proceeded to purchase some replacement mounts, a tube of high temp RTV silicone, and filled up the voided areas around the rubber engine mount with the silicone. Gonna give that stuff a solid week or more to cure before putting the beefed up engine mounts on the car.

https://scontent.fyvr3-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.6435-9/242207047_10165614323645228_1342396232821136492_n. jpg?_nc_cat=105&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=dbeb18&_nc_ohc=cGZSukam6J0AX-KXjG2&_nc_ht=scontent.fyvr3-1.fna&oh=1508afa58063741a2d66dcee88d3dbbe&oe=616AE204

As you can see, they look absolutely ghetto LOL~ But I am hoping that they will at least work well in holding my engine still while I am gunning it hard. And hopefully, the silicone will still have enough give in it that the NVH wouldn't be intolerable.

Wish me luck LOL~

First of all, I fully admit that I have no idea what I'm doing~ :eek5r:

Secondly, from doing ghetto home repairs, it seems to me that fully cured polyurethane sealants would be quite stiff. So while I certainly want the engine to stay put during hard accelerations, I am not trying to turn my shxtbox into full racecar mode, so I didn't feel comfortable with polyurethane.

Thirdly, since the mounts are gonna be sitting right next to the engine block, I figured whatever "stuff" I end up using is going to need to be capable of handling that heat. The high temp RTV silicone that I bought was advertised to be capable of handling up to 246°C, so I thought that might be appropriate.

I'll keep polyurethane in mind if I ever end up doing something similar again. In the mean time, I hope that RTV silicone would still work sufficiently well...

Why do engine mounts cause bad shifting? The motor and the trans is bolted together?

Why do engine mounts cause bad shifting? The motor and the trans is bolted together?

In a transverse drivetrain (FWD) the front and rear motor mounts prevent the whole assembly from rotating around the crank axis, so if they can't do that properly they will pull or push on the shift linkage.

But "upgrading" the family car X3 from 19"-20", and from Bridgestone RF to DWS06+ made a huge difference to the car. It feels like I installed new suspension considering how it drives.

The cons though, I can feel the rolling resistance has increased compared to the more eco minded tire.

I went with Zone Garage as well after Matsuda's recommendation. However they work by territories, so my contact was different from Matsuda's. 1 year so far with the coating and it's still good. Rolling jacks and Jack stands hasn't damaged it. I also got them to add baseboards and coat that too.

I'm using Clever Quarters based on the recommendations in this thread: https://www.revscene.net/forums/717051-epoxy-floor-installer-recommendations.html

The price is now $7/sq ft. Install happening at end of Jan. I think they were a touch generous with how they measured my garage so it came out higher than I expected. I visited their office just a couple hours after my wife backed the car into the garage door so I was too pissed to pay much attention to the details. Pro tip: Don't spend money after your wife backs the car into the garage.

I also got quotes for cabinets and storage from them and it's $$$. I'm just gonna get my own stuff from Home Depot and install it myself for less than half the price.

96sf of slatboard was $1600 installed.
A 4ft wide cabinet with sliding doors was $2010 (regular doors would have been $600 cheaper I think, no doors would have been $1k).

Local Mazda dealer quoted me about 80 total for the tail light gaskets and 200 for the entire trunk lid wiring harness. When I looked online, OEM parts from the states end up costing me more than advertised after exchange rate, fees for pick up at Blaine or Point Roberts, and driving there and back. So, it was cheaper using some foam I still had from long ago purchased at a Michael's craft store. I think I paid 6 bucks for everything. Also, it was an excuse to make a video and maybe it will help someone in the future who may have a similar problem, either on the same model car or something else.

Been sick lately so haven’t been able to really work on it. The RS is broken in a bunch of different ways, so insurance has been transferred over to the STi. Still have a bunch of work to do, but you need to start somewhere.

Got the car cleaned up (but subsequently has sat for a few months so it’s dirty). Cut apart the damaged stock bumper and put on the tubular one. Installed a short shift arm, lower front and rear poly shift bushings. Poly/billet Transmission mount and the horrible job of doing the motor mounts, also poly/billet.

Garage is 19.5x12 and they did the sides as well include the wood door frame below the doors. Took them about 5 hours to do the work. Came out to $2100 - I think they were a bit generous with the measurements as the official price is $7/sf.

That’s good to hear they did solid work. I had Troy the main guy for Clever Quarters come yesterday and do a quote for the floor as well as built in storage and whatnot. Quoted the same $7 a sqft for the floor and about 5k for all the storage I want. Considering the size of my garage and what I want done doesn’t seem like it’s too crazy compared to why I’ve heard out there.

Next week I’ll get a firm quote and virtual showing of what it will look like before I confirm

It's literally 2 bolts, but they're the length of a Subway foot-long sandwich and buried so deep you have to fist it (if you can get your hand and around the cross member. The car also had no splash guard so everything looked like the Titanic. Went the underneath way so I didn't have to mess with the manifold and gaskets, but I'm not sure that was a good call anymore.

I mean this in the most positive way, but that’s the weirdest header I’ve ever seen. Your turbo looks like a twin scroll. Do they have to be ELH for that to work? Or is this close enough.

hud 91gt
03-12-2022, 07:47 PM
Haha it’s it’s weird alright. That was my plan all along. Haha. I would have made a couple changes if I were to do it again, but it was a fun experiment. It is twin scroll. There is two trains of thought (equal length vs short as possible) and honestly I’ve never seen real research for either. Considering I’m not aiming for ridiculous power by any means, rather just quick spool in a street setup, shorter made more sense in my head at least. We’ll see.

asian_XL
03-12-2022, 09:54 PM
lol...same thing in mind that's the weirdest design I have seen. can you explain what is that coil looking thing with the downpipe?

hud 91gt
03-13-2022, 05:47 AM
It’s just a flex pipe. In reality the manifold is just halfway between a standard log manifold, and a “header.” True twin scroll in design. The most unique part of it is the use of square tubing for the center ports. The center cylinder ports are actually larger then the others, and a square design just made more sense. Despite what it looks like, cylinders 1,2,5,6 have a elbow leading into the center section. Should flow quite welll. I’m excited to try it.
More worried about the double slip connectors. Ha.

Had to replace the front splitter on my Camaro after I was being a dumb dumb and clipped it when I was in the parkade on Pender and Seymour. My buddies tell me that, yeah, I shouldn't have tried to go up with my Camaro.

The splitter was on there real good. 12 bolts, 6 rivets and 3 strips of tape. With some drilling, heat gunning and patience, it came off alright. Having a buddy helping out definitely eased the process.

So yeah, hopefully I am more careful next time and not try to take my chances going up parkades designed for Smart Fortwo.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220315/ca4c5c672e26102fd3baca89a98ad007.jpg

Makes me think of the cup holders in the focus. There are 2 thin strong rubber ‘barbs’ that grip the cup. Work fantastic, but if you have a styrofoam cup (like in America) the barbs tear the cup in half when you try to remove the cup

I bought it for the E46 330ci as track wheels to replace the heavy 3pc OZ Superleggera III. We know how that turned out. Then I was gonna put it on the E46 M3. And we all know how that one turned out too. Then I was gonna put it on the E36 M3, but it turns out you'd have to do extensive work to fit it and I didn't care enough about that junker. So on the Type R it goes - probably will have to do extensive work as well.

After getting my car all back together, I never got to my first test drive. I heard a rattling noise I didn’t like. It wasn’t consistent with RPM, so I wasn’t that scared but it did sound like it was coming from the block/timing case. After a ton of troubleshooting with a pipe to my ear, I got under the car to move some hoses, and grabbed the crank pulley/toothed wheel. The toothed wheel had come loose and was rattling on the crank pulley! Perfect! Next day I can pull the pulley, tighten/loctite it on and then wrap my downpipe in heat wrap and I’m good. 1-1.5hours tops.

The next day I spend half the day trying to pull the crank pulley without removing the radiator. (Which probably would have taken 20 minutes…). I made a pulley remover, and got it done. Perfect!

Do to tighten the toothed wheel. I scrip the screw (M5 machine screen, Allen head). Spend the next hour removing those. Drill and retap all the holes for M6 with new machine screws. I did this on my mill… cause I have a mill. Lol. Could have done it in 1/3 the time by hand, but this is accurate. Lol.

Go to reinstall the pulley. The key, from the keyway in the crank falls in the oil pan! Pull the pump to see if I can get in there with a magnet. Nope! Off comes the pan. Then I searched around the Datsun community for a new gasket. Found one 45 minutes away. Ok I’m set for tomorrow(today). Should be back at square one.

Sometime in the night I decide I want to fix an oil leak I’ve had since I rebuilt the engine. I suspect it’s the rear main cap side seals (holds the rear crank bearing). First thing in the morning I see if I can source the seals. Yup, just 45 minutes away lol! They are in my hands by noon, and the scary fix begins.

Cap removed, bearing/crank checked. Resealed with goop (I think I used the wrong goop last time, or just not enough). New oil pan gasket installed (bit of a PITa with the engine in the car). Oil pump reinstalled, swaybar reinstalled, degreased, and waiting for new oil (required 24hour dry time). Wrapped the down pipe and re-installed. Tidied up my hoses, and loose ends. Made a mini heat shield for the turbo recirc/Boost valve (plastic, on the turbo, not sure what kind of heat they can take).

Time to eat my lonely Easter Sunday dinner, and just need to add a single connector for the boost control valve, after dinner. And BAM, right where I should have been a couple days ago because of one stupid mistake lol. But I got odds and ends done too.

New ECU install is next after the test drive.

320icar's photos from pages back, got me thinking to partially restore some of my own paint

After standing at crappy tire, staring at all the cutting/polish/wax/scratch fix/ceramic coating stuff for 30 minutes, convincing myself not to do so, i did so anyways.

Got about 1/2 my car done in 2-3 hours, with a milwaukee 18V drill at half battery.
Meguiar's Quik Scratch Eraser Kit - 30$

Gonna use some jetseal once i finish the rest.

Door handle is plasti dipped

Bought a Curt hitch off FB Marketplace to get a bike rack, but frustratingly when I tried to install it, the holes did not line up. Was about half an inch too short. What should've taken 30 mins took 2 hours the first time around trying to stretch or bend it out to at least get the bolts threaded.

Seems like the warping of the hitch is a common issue with this brand.

I thought it over, and Macgyver'd a solution using a car jack and an old 2x4 to stretch out the hitch:

Which worked beautifully and fit on like a glove:

That's good to know because I want to add a hitch to our Rav4.3 as well. I even have the same jack to stretch it lol.

Another thing to note if you do install for this particular car is that the undercoating on mine covered the mount holes. So don't be surprised to not see mount holes where you expect them from the instructions. You just need a razor or something to cut away the undercoating to expose the holes.

Made a strut bar. Apparently these actually do something in these old cars.

I made it so I can adapt some firewall braces in the future…. And no the strut nuts aren’t tightened, just couldn’t wait for the paint to dry to see what it looks like on the car. lol.

Any change it could be built as a triangular brace toward the firewall, or even a 4 point one to the rad support? Though the rad support idea seems unlikely since your rad seems taller than the support.

Yes, triangulated was always the plan. That’s what I meant by adding the firewall braces (note under the photo). The beefy part of the firewall is a bit tough to squeeze a drill into with the engine in. I’ll finish it off some other time.
