Only chrome on my truck is the F150 emblems on the front fenders- I had those done in Metallic dark grey to match the step bars. Instead of paint, it's colour-matched Line-X Ultra, which is a slightly smoother than bedliner, but still textured line x. Factory emblems were a BITCH to remove. Two clips you had to take half the engine bay apart to access from the back, and way too much 3M VHB (very high bond) adhesive.

no aftermarket available unless you count bosch 'oem' which is $4 cheaper

my underlining sound deadening panel that is almost 2ft wide by 4ft long is $105 for comparison

Is that just Canadian pricing?

Would these fit? List price $25 USD

Despite wanting to buy certain American products (New Ram 1500, C7/C8 Vettes, Alpha Camaro, etc.), I still can't say I believe that given what I hear from engineers at the Big 3.

I try to stay away from broad generalizations, but from what I'm hearing.. Ford can't get their panel gaps right even on their lux vehicles, FCA has finally stopped using the TIPM but seems to not QA whatever comes in from their suppliers, and GM's accountants seem to run the business.

Less time and finger stabbing tonight since I remembered what I was doing and had all the tools handy, hopefully these fittings don't leak like the old ones. I also drilled a bunch of holes in my Jeep to test fit the JCR sliders before coating them, everything seemed good so that'll be done soon and then my short ass will have something to stand on when I'm trying to get to the ski rack.

Flew down to Cali, and before borrowing a buddies car was asked if I could put new flex lines into it. The job had what we call "mission creep"...

For the record, that is an entire front suspension (including subframe) swap, steering rack swap, new brakes, radiator repair, home alignment and the flex lines...all done in about 14 hours on the driveway. Car drove great for the 250 miles I used it this weekend!

I haven't tried a cutoff wheel yet, in the past I tried the hacksaw like many people suggested but that was terrible. I found that tin snips work fairly well but getting the stupid SS braid trimmed to the right length is tricky since there's just so many strands. Tonight I'm doing the other leaky one so hopefully it goes better now that I remember what I'm doing.

Good lord you must be hating yourself. Thin cutoff wheel at fast RPM is the ONLY good way to cut lines cleanly without a special set of hose cutting pliers that wear out after like three cuts.

Tape, cut-off wheel, blow out lines, assemble, flush, done.

Ordered a new CTEK Charger, went to my buddies shop to look at some wrap samples. Leaning towards copying the final EU Spec'd F80, which is Frozen Dark Grey with ZCP wheels, obviously everything will be period correct, so my car will have the M359s, not the 666M Comp wheels on the F80 lol.

Currently my car is black with a red extended leather interior, I think it will be pretty nice if I follow thru with that instead of doing Porsche UltraViolet like originally planned.

Installed my front tow hook, and removed the rear diffusior to drill and mount the rear tow hook. Replaced the fog light bulbs (from h7 to h11 IIRC) and installed the exhaust valve defeat. That last one is a necessary evil for winter hooniganism. If the valve freezes shut or doesn’t operate 100% correctly it locks you out of sport, track and drift modes.

Back in Sept I bought a set of dual stopwatches for the dash of the '58 beetle. Technically a classic rally car would have a watch and a stopwatch...but hey, I haven't found a matching watch yet. Long story short, while the mounting plate would work in the traditional mounting location (radio delete plate), I need to keep that area clear for a future item. So at some point I'd need to modify the plate. But first...

When a great friend of mine saw that I was starting to add some historic rally look to the car, he commented that I need a tripmeter. He's not wrong, but period correct trip meters are SUPER expensive. While I was visiting last week, this came out of his vast collection:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4836/45330032264_3bbd7a926d_c.jpg

It's a very early Danish rally odometer known as a Hemo Trip Taeller. The odometer has two hands, much like a clock. The longer hand rotates on the outer dial. One revolution is a kilometre, so you can accurately measure to 0.05 kilometres. The inner dial, and smaller hand does 30km in one full revolution, so hopefully the rally master has an end of leg and/or ODO zero before then!

I think based on the very limited info I have, that this is a first-generation unit, from 1960. Later models have dots every 0.01km, and a mounting system that allows for putting it flat on the dash.

Back to the stopwatches...
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4851/46004561432_2d5d86cda4_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4852/46004561192_2d02e2bd78_c.jpg

After a lot of machining and polishing, I duplicated the mount for the stopwatches, but with a clearance channel for the dash trim on the beetle.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4824/45330027004_1138b4dbb9_c.jpg

Here's both items mounted up:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4864/45329913394_838077e0cf_c.jpg

And the Hemo lights up with the headlight switch:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4840/31115648947_9bd4db6ba9_c.jpg

I've never mounted the sun visors on my car, as its an early-build '58. I found evidence out of Europe that it may have come with the single driver-side visor like a '57 oval, but it's probably unlikely. The dual '58 set I have were pretty gross looking, so I tried out that vinyl die that's like spray paint. I need to see if it's available in ivory, not the white I used...but I'm surprised at how well they turned out.

Fun times! Replacing door hinge pins on a VW is one of those jobs people avoid, and lots of restoration guys will even avoid doing on customer's cars. It's a job that should really only be done before a car is painted, but the need for new pins doesn't necessarily match up to the paint schedule!

Two sets of pins are available, first and second oversize. I had to go to second oversize, which means if this car ever needs pins again I'm in trouble. First set lasted 60 years though...

After the job I have very minor paint damage to the top of both hinges, which is to be expected the way the tool works. The chips are easily touched up, and the door opens and closes like it should. Onto the next item on the list!

installed a Thinkware F800 front/rear into the car.

it was a bit of a pain in the ass... the cable going to the rear is alot thicker and longer than the one that comes with the blackvue series. I did manage to hide all the cabling as best as I could. Blackvue's app is also much much easier to use than the thinkware. firmware updates are silly as you have to connect the thinkware to a hotspot to get it.. easiest way i guess is to just put the firmware update on the sdcard. speaking of which, if your car has all the funky sensors nowadays then theres that huge contraption on the top center of your windshield... so for installation, the thinkware goes underneath it..BUT to remove the sdcard, you need to leave a good amount of space or it wont come out...because the sdcard slot is on the top of the thinkware unit. other issue is that the blackvue was a whole lot more sleeker and stealthy.... the F800 is black/silver... so its quite visible. wifi transfer of files to smartphone was super fast though which was great..otherwise quality was good too.. very crisp image quality. but i have to say the thinkware app is very clunky and kinda shitty. also the app has no LIVE view.. kinda shitty.. its more meant to line up the camera view.

I need to grind and paint my floor, I've had $3k in epoxy paint in storage but haven't found two weeks at home in the summer to do it! Dollies would help for sure, but I'm not spending the money for GoJacks...and once you've used genuine gojacks, you understand why it's a waste of money to buy anything else.

I did own a set of four Princess Auto wheel dollies, I gave them to Rocket Rally because they sucked even on a smooth floor. At least they had a crew that could push cars to get them to roll :P

GoJacks, I had to google. Those look great.

As for the floor, I’m know you know this but prep that floor properly! The paint on my floor is just the Home Depot waterbased epoxy. Ran out of time to prep, so just painted over what was already on there with the cheap stuff. It’s actually pretty tough, until it gets wet. Haha.

Decided to open up some storage boxes and get to porting my turbo manifold. Found the turbo before making it to the manifold. Bought this thing in the dark before I knew what I was doing (still don’t). Never looked at it close. I’d say I got hosed. Haha. Took it apart. For magical devices these things sure are simple. Question is, is it worth rebuilding with a billet wheel, or find a used turbo? I don’t plan on spending $1500 on a new turbo right now. It’s an HX35

I don’t know anything about turbos, so I’m hesitant to say it’s useable. The compressor housing has a few little nicks but I should be able to easily sand them out.

Anything in Craigslist seems to be $300+. For that price I can buy a rebuild kit and a billet wheel and be assured some decent life, no?

Went to work on the manifold today. People get some pretty good results porting this things out. Not pretty, but it’s an exhaust.... not much work to the runners, but it’s a better picture. Lol. Biggest restriction is at the merge at the collector.

The '58 got a fresh coat of chassis black on the underside. My trail exploring this summer put a few scrapes in the bottom, and the surface rust was unsightly.

Started making patch panels for the German Look beetle project...I'm going to have to make some new patches, as the donor car was rotten in the same area...but I figure I might as well make patterns that are as close as possible.

I'm probably going to have to make this one out of fresh steel. I cut it too small, and the surface rust was more than surface. :( Of course, it's all curves...great.

installed a Thinkware F800 front/rear into the car.

it was a bit of a pain in the ass... the cable going to the rear is alot thicker and longer than the one that comes with the blackvue series. I did manage to hide all the cabling as best as I could. Blackvue's app is also much much easier to use than the thinkware. firmware updates are silly as you have to connect the thinkware to a hotspot to get it.. easiest way i guess is to just put the firmware update on the sdcard. speaking of which, if your car has all the funky sensors nowadays then theres that huge contraption on the top center of your windshield... so for installation, the thinkware goes underneath it..BUT to remove the sdcard, you need to leave a good amount of space or it wont come out...because the sdcard slot is on the top of the thinkware unit. other issue is that the blackvue was a whole lot more sleeker and stealthy.... the F800 is black/silver... so its quite visible. wifi transfer of files to smartphone was super fast though which was great..otherwise quality was good too.. very crisp image quality. but i have to say the thinkware app is very clunky and kinda shitty. also the app has no LIVE view.. kinda shitty.. its more meant to line up the camera view.

...

Did the F800 from bestbuy come with Thinkware's hardwiring kit? and what's the max capacity SDcard?

To each their own - I don't need night vision when I am looking for a tool in my trunk. Red and orange bother my eyes and I can't stand either in my interior. Been in VWs now for 20 years, their interiors have all been blue lit, so I am used to it and prefer it now. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4904/31555884377_bc4cd12f42_z.jpg

The car had a 'restoration' in the 90's that was terrible. Grey carpet cut and glued everywhere, fiberglass for rust repair...right over the rust, they didn't even cut out the bad stuff. Mechanically the car isn't terrible, drove up onto the trailer but has zero brakes.

A buddy and I took care of all the structural work and welding it needed. All the repairs are well hidden except for one large patch I put under the passenger floor. All the repairs were done to the topside, but if you ducked your head under it looked bad so I just did a smooth patch panel over the crud.

We have brakes! First time I've ever had a bleed screw strip out of a wheel cylinder on the 'last bleed'. Broken 'em trying to open, yup. Pull the threads out after 4 or 5 times already using it with success? Nope. Good thing I had backups ready, it was a quick swap.

We have clutch! At least, I think we do. Pedal doesn't feel 100%, but then I haven't driven an MG hydraulic clutch in a year +, and my Rally Bug has a full Tilton setup in it, so the feel is vastly different. I should probably just jump in my MGB to get a feel, but it's cold and wet out :P Now that I know there are no leaks (with the car sitting overnight), I'll fire it up and see if I can get gears on the stand without any issues.

Thought I would explore the transmission leak a little last night, and discovered stripped threads on one of the 'plugs'. Number 76 in the diagram.

It should have a couple of interlock balls above it, and I would have anticipated at least one would fall out (but having never pulled an MG transmission apart, they may be held captive as part of the assembly). The plug is shaped to obviously hold the interlock ball in, but even rotating through the gears won't allow me to seat the bolt flush with the transmission case. Hmmm...previous owner, who's a friend, didn't mention any issues with the gearbox. A slight mystery, one which may find some enlightenment if I actually read the transmission chapter of the repair manual. In the meantime, my shop helicoils are metric only, so I'll have to see if I can get a 3/8-24 set today to repair the trans. Worst case scenario there is enough meat to go up to 10mmx1.0 and I can fashion the correct shaped bolt on the lathe.

Deciding if I want to replace my steering wheel with a brand new OEM one, or get it refinished in the same material. I thought about Alcantara but I can't be asked to keep it clean.

Waiting for my new spark plugs also, going to replace them when I do the Thermostat on the car. Might as well do an oil change also.

technically not "today", but almost 3 weeks ago I broke my RH axle shaft lol.
https://youtu.be/1XiUUW-gqvU

Towed it to work the next day and started working on it on my day off...
Actually found out that it had actually rusted away, over the last 22 years, underneath the rubber vibration dampener that's clamped halfway along the axle shaft. It was also fractured by the rust pretty badly as well.

Then I decided I should do the clutch (it was chattering super bad, i kind of deferred it since I owned the car for the last couple years:badpokerface:).
Found out it was down to the rivets, but it wasn't really slipping though. Just crazy chatter.
Put a nice Exedy Clutch in.
https://i.imgur.com/XD2JAd1l.jpg[/img[img]https://i.imgur.com/uzlylC0l.jpg

And also did the oil pan gasket. Was tired of smelling burning oil every time i was waiting at a traffic light. It was one productive day LOL.

I forgot to include that haha.
I did replace the flywheel.
While the old one was in good condition to machine and reuse, but for the sake of saving time and not having my hoist tied up, I got a new flywheel instead for approximately equivalent cost (perks of work). Now, with the old one, I'll either save it for next time (that will be a long time), or sell it...
I didn't save much time in the day though... the first flywheel they sent me came in the right box with correct p/n but wrong part inside

Ordered new rear brake rotors and pads. Debating if I wanna do fuel injectors on my car. They're really cheap @ $22.09usd/each for the Bosch ones (Bosch is the OEM Supplier for Injectors on my car) total would be $174usd for all 8.

I got quoted over $500CDN to do that by Racing Greed. Not sure why, they're very easy to access on the E9X M3s. I have 8 injectors, if you could recommend a place that could do it let me know. Otherwise it would make more sense to just buy new ones IMHO.

Makes sense, which is why it would make more sense to me at least to outright replace them.

Just this past week my fuel economy took a dump again. Im getting around 280 KM/170miles range per full tank.

I've considered doing the following

- Bosch Fuel Injectors x8 - $174usd - self install
- Eldor STI Ignition Coils x8 - $539 usd - self install
- Genuine BMW Fuel Tank Breather Valve x1 - $80-100usd - self install

I have new spark plugs sitting on my desk right now. Normally I get around 360-380KM range which is decent for the V8 (Most people are getting around 380-400km even after ripping it around while.)

For 1 car, I threw in a new engine air filter after about 3-4 years.
Construction between the two filters looks pretty different, new one is "Bosch Workshop"

https://i.imgur.com/2KLOWaj.jpg

Like Acura604, I threw in a dual channel dash cam with OBD2 hardware.
Instead of BlackVue, I used an Aukey DR02D and Aukey hardwire kit.
Mostly happy with it for just over $200 CAD taxes in.

Cable to rear camera was super thick and hard to slip into the seals.

The extra module is kind of annoying, wonder why they couldn't have located it with the main module.

Also needed to detach the OBD2 port connector from its original location since the fuse box cover wouldn't close with it in its original spot.

Well, I got back from my US trip with a bunch of parts in my luggage...and I also picked up the wheels from a local powder-coater. Once again, I'm not sure I made the correct colour choice for the 'look' I want...but it will be easy enough to change.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7895/33080181548_6d9bcb9d76_c.jpg

For the wheels, I will probably end up using plasti-dip to make them black. I think a black wheel is going to look better for the period 'racing' look I'm after, but didn't want to powdercoat them permanently black, as I fear they'll look like cheap winter steelies.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7912/46955560151_aac4772ee9_c.jpg

I also managed to pick up the seats that I had recovered, and got the guys to quilt some panels for me that I used on the inside of the doors. To say I'm stoked on the interior would be an understatement. While it's certainly not original...it's is 100% 'me'.

The steering wheel is planned as a 'temporary' item, until I can find a thick-rimmed, 13", wooden wheel at a price I'm willing to pay. But I do love the feel of a good alcantra wheel when I'm driving, so I suspect it will stay in the car longer. Pretty much the only reason I'll swap it out is the quick-release moves the wheel 1.5" closer to the driver over a stock wheel. I could run without the quick release, but I know from my Beetle that if you let the alcantra sit in inclement weather, they start to feel damp and clammy. With no top, I need to be able to take the wheel inside!

Those vents saved my butt. I honestly have no idea if they are centered in front of the seats (installed them before the seats), or in the "right" place. But they are dead even with the vents, and centered to the vents. Thus...they look correct :)

So my OTHER Italian is acting up and giving me problems. The little shit occasionally surges when you let off the throttle and then try to reapply. It also sometimes has problems idling and just dies at stop lights.

https://i.postimg.cc/QNpX7jBg/IMG-6130.jpg

So...

1) I replaced the sparkplug. The old one doesnt seem that fouled up...
https://i.postimg.cc/d0czYvx0/20190130-222432.jpg

2) i removed all the extra accessories attached to the bike. The previous owner put in a fuel controller and an accessory port and added a shit load of wires.

Went for a ride just now and it seems to be okay. Hopefully, this fixes it, if not the next step is to fuck with the fuel evaporation canister as that might cause stalls or surges apparently.

P.S. I must downsize to only 1 Italian mistress. having 2 around is too time-consuming and not good for the wallet.

Well, the car is finally on the ground! The front left caliper locked up, which was odd, and when I pressed the pads back to see if I could repeat the issue I found fluid on the rotor. Ordered in a rebuilt caliper (last rebuilt caliper available in Canada!) only to open the box and find a right-hand caliper in the box. Sigh. I did manage to get some rebuild kits, and figured I'd see what I could do. One of the piston's in the left side caliper made it clear as to why I got fluid on the rotor, this is after cleaning it up as best I could:
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7922/47005020812_b27c5cb293.jpg

But I have three calipers (technically), and thus six pistons...and I only need four! So I decided to use the new rebuilt caliper on the front right, and tear that one down to gain a good piston for the front left. With the left rebuilt, I mounted both calipers, started to bleed the brakes, and had to tighten the front right banjo bolt. Can you guess what happened?

*snap*. #@&$!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I forgot to check the depth of the banjo bolt before installing it, and as my brain was thinking "hey, I wonder if this bottoms out in the new caliper" it snapped. E-Z out couldn't pull it, and I considered using the mill to bump the fitting up to an M10, but realized I'd probably have to go up to an M12 banjo fitting to have enough meat for the threads. Well, crap. I had already split the OLD RF caliper to pull the piston the easy way, and the rebuild kits I had (AP) didn't come with the seal between caliper halves. Ugh. Well, I'm hooped anyways...so I split the new caliper, and measured that seal to see if I would have something that matched. Managed to find something in my random-VW seals box, probably a seal used in a type-4 motor...but it's the exact size I needed, so I tossed it all together and onto the car. "But Dave," I can hear you saying, "that seal may not be brake fluid safe?" True, but I had two of them...so one is sitting in a cup of brake fluid on my work bench, and the other is (currently) holding fluid at pressure in the brake system. 24 hours later and the seal in a cup appears to be the same dimension and brake fluid safe...

Swapped out the rear limit straps, including cutting out the bolts and sleeves on the upper mounts as they had all become one-unit together. This required making up some new sleeves on the lathe, and swapping the upper mounts over to metric hardware. Hey, I'm a VW guy and my shop has basically zero in the SAE department! I've got my Fastenal guy putting together an SAE kit for me.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7915/33181885488_4600f3cb71_c.jpg
Finally, I got under the car and sprayed texturized rubber undercoat over both floorpans and all of my welding repairs. Future me is going to hate myself for doing that, as it sucks to remove at a later date, but should anyone of authority look under the car, it looks safe and well repaired, vs patchworked. The exception to this is the passenger side where I did tack and seal a flat panel over all our patch work, but I simply have to remove the front seat cushion to show the quality repairs from the topside. Thought I almost lost an eye in the process. I was under the car spraying at arms length with just safety glasses on, vs. a full face sheild. I had shifted slightly to get a far off spot, and as my brain was thinking "I should tuck my chin in", a drop of undercoating splashed back and beelined for my eyeball, UNDER the glasses between glasses and cheek. I'm not sure if it hit me right in the eye, or I closed my eye fast enough, but it doesn't matter. BURNED LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE. I got out from under the car and into the house for an eye ball washing session relatively quickly, but it was a scary 30min. Thankfully the black eyeliner I gave myself has only lasted a few days, and my eye seems perfectly fine. Wear your safety gear kiddies.

Now that the car is on the ground, I've realized two things. First, I think I need to rebuild the spare front shocks I have an prep them for install. The front feels awfully soft, but more importantly the right side feels softer than the left. Both sides pass the "bounce test" in what I would consider appropriate for a 60's car with oil-shocks. Second, my gut reaction was correct and I've chosen the wrong wheel colour. If I ever return the car to a stock looking midget with windsheild and hub caps, they'll look quite classy. But with the look I'm going with...they're completely out of place. My buddy Warwick called it, even before the wheels were powdercoated, and I should have switched the colour. I think I'm going to end up pulling the wheels and plastidipping them for a black look. Gotta sit on it for a little bit. Tonneau cover has arrived in Vancouver, but it will be a few weeks before I have it in the shop to do the install. And now, we wait for spring weather to show up...

Ordered a different T-Stat for my car and also ordered new hood support bars since mine could use replacement. Debated if I should order new trunk support bars also.

Cost:

$22.02usd for the set, I saved $55.88USD by buying the OE one instead of the ones from BMW. The only difference is that the BMW ones say E9X M3 on the bars LOL.

Looked at the cost for rear ones just now also. $26.44USD, definitely will order those whenever I need another engine maintenance item from FCP.

Did you do that yourself? Where'd you source the tint? Thinking of getting the same on my WRX

I ordered the tint online at Tint Center out of the US and had Brookswood tint install it. I did the sunroof as well. The blue isn't popular and most tint shops around here won't order it in as they have to order a 100' roll. I found one shop that would order it in, but the pricing was going to be $250 more than me ordering it myself. Window Tint - SunTek HP Blue - 40" Wide - SunTek - Automotive - TC Store (http://store.tintcenter.com/automotive-window-tint/suntek/suntek-hp-blue-40-wide.html)

I am tired of the blacked-out look and wanted good UV and heat blocking capabilities - the HP50 fit the bill. I really like it, but I can see how it isn't for everyone. It gets darker out of the sun.

Started stripping my bike apart at the end of November with a long list of maintenance items I wanted to attack. First on my list was to rebuild my front end as the old springs were sacked and the lowers were looking a little haggard. After stripping the forks apart, I hand sanded, then polished the lowers, and afterwards I had them Cerakoted with their new polished aluminium coating; I have had a lot of my guns coated with Cerakote and I know how much abuse it can take, so I am looking forward to seeing how it works on my fork lowers. Starting this morning, I reassembled my lowers with new bushings, guides, seals, and Progressive HD springs (full disclaimer - my local one-man Indy shop helped with the fork tube assembly as it is really a three hand job without jigs); by this afternoon it was all back together. I wasn't even done my second beer after all that work getting here; that's just the way it is.

Tearing the rear swing arm off next to replace bearings and bushings.

While you guys were getting snow, I took the MG Midget out for it's first test drive. I needed a few clips installed on the new tonneau cover, so I figured why not bring the car out. These (legal) tires are terrible in the snow! haha.

Came home with a long list of things I need to attend to. For starters, the brake bleed is terrible. It might just be a bad front wheel bearing allowing the disc to push the pads back. The '63 Midget doesn't use taper wheel bearings, so you can't adjust for worn bearings. Seriously. How the British motoring industry made it out of the War era I'll never understand. Annnnyhow, I've got tapered bearings coming...but I have to figure out a shim solution because you can't setup the tapered bearings properly without shims. Argg.

The tach doesn't work, the speedo doesn't work, the driver's side heated seat is on all the time, and it has some other electrical gremlins. But it runs, drives, oil pressure and coolant temps were great!

It is gutless though. Wow is it gutless.

My rear end is whirring. I checked my rotors and they were the same temp on both sides, so it's not a dragging rotor which Elements are prone too. I'm hoping its just a wheel bearing and not the rear diff. I've been Hooning around a lot this winter so I'll change the diff fluid first and see if that helps. Otherwise it's bearing time. Not a terrible job as I'll be installing upper adjustable control arms at the same time. Just have to wait for it to be not NOT -20 out.

Berz out.

Why don’t you jack up the rear end and spin the tires?

CCA-Dave
02-24-2019, 07:48 AM
Well, I think I figured out the wheel bearing issue. Long story short, the outer wheel bearing was installed backwards. The inner race is width X (lets pick 3/4" as example dimension for discussion purposes). The outer race is 1/2 of X, say 3/8", and offset to one side. THUS, if the previous mechanic who replaced the wheel bearings puts the outer bearing in backwards, it will be 3/8" from bottom out on the step inside the hub. That means the hun as the potential of moving back and forth on the bearings which are tight...by about 3/8" of an inch. In my case, it was almost a 1/2" of side to side movement, walking on the bearings when I took the brake caliper off. :-O

If we ignore the potential wear between the outside of the bearing, and in inside of the hub, the outer bearing actually met the 'wear spec' in the manual for testing them. Hmmm. I can't measure the outside of the bearing, or inside of the hub accurately enough to determine if there was any wear, but I would suggest they reinstalled into the hub easier than I think they should have. Flipped the bearing around the correct way, reinstalled everything and got runout within spec. Going to give it a test drive later today to see if it fails again, but will be ordering the Moss taper bearing conversion kit regardless. What I really want to know, however, is how this wasn't a problem for the previous two owners (whom I know). Very strange. The only thing I can figure is the front left caliper, which I found to be seizing, wasn't doing anything...except holding the hub/disc in 'about' the correct location. Since I put a new caliper on, which could have the pads/pistons actually compressed, it allowed for the movement? Scary.

New hubs are $110usd, which might be a wise idea for the one side at least. Passenger side was installed correctly.

No adjustment Midget wheel bearing setup:

Was the freewheeling calipers incredibly worn on one side or do
You think the caliper was literally pushing the wheel off it’s race each time the brake was applied? My brain can’t visialize it. Ha

CCA-Dave
02-24-2019, 08:38 AM
Brake pads on the LF were definitely worn oddly. Caliper was the only thing holding the wheel from moving a full 1/2" side to side. My roadtest shortly will tell me if I've solved the issue...

The pain is real, the first pic is what my car has looked like since December:okay:

It warmed up enough (4 degrees) to wash the winter car for the first time in 3 months :fuckyea:

Today's job wasn't very mechanical but it was pretty rewarding. I installed a rear view camera and Nav system in it a couple of weeks ago and that had some pretty gory pics of the dash all pulled apart but I was kind of in the zone and totally forgot to take pics. I have a set of Hotchkis swaybars ready to install one of these weekends, I'm waiting to get an exhaust as the rear exhaust section has to come off to install the rear swaybar, want to avoid doing work twice.

I cleaned the car inside and out, including a good Collinite treatment on the leather inside. Then I turned my attention to my Harley. I put it on the lift, pulled the rear apart and gave it an alignment. Feeling like getting more done, I put together my front inner fairing and decided to finish the LED swap. Originally, all the gauges and stereo were orange - which I really dislike. Getting the soldering iron to work, I swapped everything over to blue and made my needles red; it was tedious but not too difficult overall. The stereo I had done professionally from a shop in the US as it needs to be waterproof - but I also had them to add amp pre-outs and an internal bluetooth module that works with my handlebar controls.

Today’s vehicle, is an old ski boat my family bought. Previous owner changed the carb on it and it was missing a spacer to keep it level. With the added height of a spacer, the hood for the engine no longer closed. So last year I made one out of lumber. This winter I made a nicer one. First aluminum welding project. Not one bit of evidence remains as I ground every little bit of them off. Haha. Was a fun project. Building experience. Made out of 1.5” aluminum angle.

Finally managed to get some proper sized exhaust clamps, as that was the last item remaining from my winter rebuild. Many hours of labour in the cold garage through the winter, managed to get my first ride in of the season. Went south to Porteau Cove, that wasn't enough, so I headed up to Whistler to have a beer with my friend. Was grinning all day.

Put airbag helpers on the Rav. Put the airvalve right next to the rear AUX lighter socket. Right where I’ll plug in the compressor. Also installed the hitch wiring. Bought a weight distribution hitch the other day, and Goldilocks is ready to tow!

Then I finished fitting the right rear fender on my 95 civic hatchback only to find the weld through primer in a spray can I just bought is dead. Sucks.

The '58 Beetle got the following this weekend:

• Upgrade to (front) disc-brakes
• New king pins & bushings
• New link pins, bushings and bearings
• New front wheel bearings
• Brake adjust (rear)
• Oil Change
• Valve adjust, set timing
• 'Cruiser' pedal, which is a normal pedal that covers the roller pedal early beetles have. My '58 is actually supposed to have a cruiser pedal from the factory, but that disappeared at some point in it's life. So now it has an aftermarket aluminum one.
• More sound insulation (hushmat) between engine and passenger compartment (probably won't do anything)

At one point doing the king and link pins I screwed up, and damaged a pin. Ended up mounting the front spindle in the lathe, which was an exciting (and dangerous) affair. Managed to fix it though, without breaking anything in the shop...so that was good.

Not my photo, but here's another wide-5 rotor that shows how it's done:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/925921.jpg

So it's a full proper rotor, with an additional mounting surface cast into it since the wheel bolt pattern is 5 x 205mm.

I changed my brakes. My rotors were hella warped, because my old caliper was seized, and there was about 20mm of rust ridge on the inside of both rotors LOL.
Also had replaced the RF caliper when I did my clutch last time. I put the new pads in and something wasn't right. The caliper kept hitting the caliper bracket. Luckily I still had the old caliper. Found out the "reman" caliper bracket seemed like new aftermarket and was casted too big. Swapped caliper brackets back and it worked like a charm...

Managed to get a half day at work today, so spent the time washing the car. Last few washes I could tell there was no wax or sealant on the paint. So did the normal wash, then brushed the door jams/hatch, shampoo’d the engine bay. Did a full clay bar with instant detailer. At this point it’s been about 3.5 hours. Chose not to do a machine polish today as I’m beat. Just did a quick hand wax and skipped the interior clean. Will do before Sunday though. Paint has a lot of chips and the front bumper is peppered like mad. Guess I’ll call it patina ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2000+ km's on the Hagerty Spring Thaw highlighted some issues with my new front-end setup on the 1958 Beetle. Once you load the car with luggage, spares, co-driver and enthusiastic driving...the front tire clearance goes from tonnes to zero. Whelp, that was an expensive one-weekend tire! Came home, and tore the whole front suspension out of the car:
https://scontent.fyvr3-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/57358215_10161615243095468_5758704764795748352_n.j pg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_ht=scontent.fyvr3-1.fna&oh=d00221a9a159581fe7431a00c00a0bed&oe=5D3036A4

I will be installing a new 2" narrowed front beam, which will essentially put the front track width back to the factory width. The disc brake and spindle combination bumped each front wheel out by about 3/4", and the modern tires are wider/more square so the problem was compounded. Normally one would order spring packs already 2" narrower, but they were out of stock so I have to make my own out of a set of stock torsion springs. Dimpling spring steel is not easy!

https://scontent.fyvr3-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/59301298_10161615243365468_9068661074265374720_n.j pg?_nc_cat=106&_nc_ht=scontent.fyvr3-1.fna&oh=c66dae91d20b78064a5fa19a06581fce&oe=5D779152

I'll cut the spring packs down in length tonight, and the parts I found missing in my front end (upper mount rubbers, bolts and mounting plates) will be here tomorrow for the reinstall.

In the meantime, I started to make some swarf on the lathe...
https://scontent.fyvr3-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/59464515_10161615243220468_3219188772738433024_n.j pg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_ht=scontent.fyvr3-1.fna&oh=932ec8ce8a3bfd3194ac866c9b636d38&oe=5D60E722

And roughed out half of the Porsche 356 wheel spacers I need for the rear axle of the beetle. The factory units were threaded onto the studs, which was presumably so they didn't lose them in a racing pit-stop...but is otherwise a terrible idea on many accounts. So mine aren't threaded, and will simply slide over the new studs I picked up.
https://scontent.fyvr3-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/59404259_10161615243275468_8785191763850559488_n.j pg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_ht=scontent.fyvr3-1.fna&oh=d8afd7c70b7c379bc6f6f1942eaee978&oe=5D641D60

Once I've got the other five roughed in, they'll all go onto the mill for a couple of passes to ensure they are the exact same thickness (20mm). I may take the time to polish them, but haven't worked out how much material I'll lose in the process. I have all the gear to anodize them at home, except for the acid, but it's such a caustic process I'm not sure I have the motivation to do it :P

Sort of lost track of time in the shop yesterday. Went in for an hour after work, walked out at 1:45am wondering why I was hungry.

On the weekend, but got the following sorted:

Assembled the new front end, and got it up into the car. Lifting, aligning, and bolting in a semi-built front beam is NOT fun with a single person! Converted the front and rear axle to studs and nuts, as opposed to lug bolts.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/40833041253_b30219da14_b.jpg

Finished machining up the Porsche 356 style rear spacers...which move the rear wheels out to an acceptable position from previous.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/46882926955_c3dff3e23a_c.jpg

I've had black carpet in the car since I first finished it, mostly because it was being used for TV and they prefered to have the whole interior black. When I reupholstered to the red, carpet wasn't in the budget. I was possibly going to have the car hired out for the month of May, and for that client the interior was important. So bought the fastest carpet kit I could get, even though it's not the colour I really want. Oh well, it's an upgrade for now!

Drives fantastic on the new setup, no tire rub even with two of us and full luggage. With gas prices the way they are, it's quite the car. Filled up the tank in Princeton, drove it all the way to Squamish. Still wasn't out of fuel. Rally Bug can almost get to Chilliwack :P

Took care of a number of small issues on the car, but my quick rebuild on the howling speedometer was a failure. It locked up, and took out the cable. Gotta send it out for a proper rebuild and/or buy another unit.

You tell me if it sounds like a bolt action : https://youtu.be/u4Zs5qSGYwo

Only issue is that I ran out of time. Currently my 1/2 is dead center, but it should be 3/4 at center. I just need to find a tiny hex key that will clear the cig tray area, with enough leverage to do the adjustment.

Not sure if anyone else had this problem, but the windshield on my WRX was unbearably foggy when it rained. I've always had this really bad smear kind of like permanent water spots since new. Best described as if you were taking a picture with a lens that you just smudged your finger over. Except I wasn't able to remove the smudge until today! I've tried literally everything and I've never gotten the smudge off until I used some carpro glass polish (I think any polish with cerium would work). Topped it off with some Glaco water repellent (thousand times better/longer lasting than RainX) and I can honestly say that my glass truly feels invisible. Time to do the same to my other cars :okay:

I had a ton of old shift knobs from my Subaru days. The great thing about the Subaru knobs is that their diameter is much bigger than most automatic sticks. A few mins on Amazon, and a few days for shipping, and I was in possession of an adapter to play with.

I have been using the factory TRD knob from day one, and while nice, it's a common knob in the Tundra world. You can see it in this pic here.

https://i.imgur.com/9hxHNcN.jpg

On to the adapter.

First off, I had to try out one of my old school jdm bubble knobs.
https://i.imgur.com/aaNrctF.jpg
First impression, this thing is hilarious. It's big, bold, and gets in the way. But it brings me back to the days when we used to extend our knobs and e-brakes because jdm :lol

Second, I tossed on my STi-WR1 knob. It's a beautiful, heavy machined knob that came with the WR1 special edition STi. I loved this knob when I had my STi, and it doesn't disappoint in my truck.
https://i.imgur.com/eQf4qFa.jpg

At this point I knew what I wanted to do. So I reattached my TRD knob and went back to Amazon to order a leather boot. That should finish the look well.

This is in it's original element, a 2004 STi WR1. The leather boot completes the look and is much cleaner than running it without.

Got my Amazon special shift boot in yesterday and I couldn't wait to put it all together.

old.
First off, I had to try out one of my old school jdm bubble knobs.

First impression, this thing is hilarious. It's big, bold, and gets in the way. But it brings me back to the days when we used to extend our knobs and e-brakes because jdm :lol

Still a little dildo-ey.
:fuckthatshit:

So I tried the WR1 knob.

Second, I tossed on my STi-WR1 knob. It's a beautiful, heavy machined knob that came with the WR1 special edition STi. I loved this knob when I had my STi, and it doesn't disappoint in my truck.

Total cost was about $15, and I'm really happy with the vinyl boot. I'm going to have one made from Alcantara using the dimensions I came up with using this boot. That should match the wheel perfectly.

I didn't do this, but Aria did. Well, I did 25% of it until I got stuck with a seized ball joint. Swapped those Chinese control arms and sway bar links with Meyle HD. The first two hours went perfectly, the next two not so much, and then the next 8 hours were hell. Hammered the hell outta the control arms with a sledgehammer for hours, but the ball joint was stuck on the steering knuckle. Finished the front right, but I ended up just taking it to Aria.

Anyway, car drives pretty good now. No more hesitation in the drivetrain due to cracked guibo, no more rear steering feeling under braking (had the RTABs replaced with Z4 RTABS + limiter shims), alignment done. It's great!

Time for something that I can do - brake rotors/flush and engine/trans mount. Gonna install the Revshfit 95a poly bushings next, with blank rotors, and fluid change with ATE Type 200.

Wish me luck LOL

i finally swapped out my shabby rear bumper and rotten rear crash bar.
Installed a facelift rear bumper in better condition.
The crash bar was basically at the point of crumbling. No crumple zone anymore. Swiss cheese yo!

Also installed a felpro oil pan gasket a week and a half ago. Piece of shit. Found out it was pouring out oil today. Felpro certainly makes you feel pro, from re-redoing everything. Should've gone OEM or better.

i forgot, I also did my seasonal muffler changeover LMAO. Told my dad, and he said, "it's summer time, the police are catching the exotic cars... i mean 'exhaust' cars"
:awwyeah:
