Reverse camera stopped working. Tried cleaning all connections...no help.

Its been a while since ive had to go to one. Which wreckers would possibly have a 2011 grand cherokee? Thanks!

slapped the all-seasons back onto both cars...

half way through 1 car, the mcgard lock nut broke. the actual teeth that latch onto the lug sheared right off.

i contacted Mcgard...they are sending me a replacement set. never had this happen in well over 25 years of vehicle ownership.

i dont think i'm gonna bother with wheel locks anymore... want my wheels? take them... tires are low tread anyways./

Happens all the time. Unfortunately doesn’t seem to matter if it’s impact guns, breaker bars etc. Sometimes they just break

Completely redid the rear bench. I had stabbed it with a scalpel just as I finished it. I took it all apart to replace the boxing which I stabbed but wasn’t sure the seam would take more needle holes without comprimising it’s integrity (it gets the most use). So I completely redid it.

https://i.ibb.co/cNWHg9x/5-EBDF0-B7-57-AA-4-D47-B2-EC-38-C57-D5-EEED5.jpg

And the front bench. This one has some complex curves, and the old foam was pretty bent out of shape. Completely made with my own pattern. The old vinyl couldn’t be used as it was so stretched out of shape. These 4 pieces probably took me 5/6 full days. No wonder upholstery work is so expensive.

And finally got my rear window tinted! My front driver side window glass thing also fell off the window track today so had to take apart my door again to fix that.. :S But wasn't too bad. Super happy about the tint :)

Same thing happened and I don't want it to happen again, wondering what's the strongest adhesive for the window track

Always been curious how is pricing for servicing cars over in HK, and the modification scene.

Rent is expensive, the only way to get cheaper service is to bring the car to rural area garage. Hardly find someone to fabricate parts for you.

Mod scene is just like Richmond in the 2000s. A lot of people are willing to pay to soup up the car with expensive parts. Again, it is rare to see someone to work on or DIY their own car(s)

Adjusted the coilovers for the thousandth time. Still lower than I want but if I raise it up (via preload) I get coil binding. So I had to lower it to gain travel, yeah weird I know. I also got the interior fully cleaned and baby seat installed as well as the classic baby on board sign.

The last thing I did today was a little plastidipping. I removed the rear diffuser a long while ago as all it did was trap mud/rocks/snow etc and act as a parachute. Always hated though how it looked like I was missing a panel. Decided to dip the hidden area so if I put the diffuser back on, no problem looks OEM, but if I leave it off it looks oem from 5 feet away.

Red beetle continues to progress. Engine build is getting closer, and I'm pretty stoked on my front mount oil cooler setup. Waiting for my Vibrant Performance order to finish things off on both. This weekend will be spent modifying the engine bay to make future engine work significantly easier. I've been avoiding it for a few weeks.

Nothing as exciting as CCA-Dave, but I got a new set of Federal Evoluzion ST-1 tires for the Boxster. They feel like the Micheline Pilot Super Sports I had on my previous 996, and these are easy on the wallet compared to Michelins. So far, so good. Would recommend these tires to anyone who wants a good summer UHP tire and for light track or autocross duty. It rained today and they were pretty good when roads are wet, and good stopping power too. Very comfortable much like the MPSS. I don't recommend these for the winter whatsoever.

My eBay Wastegate seized up on me. Still too cheap to spend $600 on a wastegate, I found the only one for sale in the area (with shipping being a disaster these days I had to stay local). Legitimate TiAL MVR 44. Lovely purple colour covered up by someone’s attempt at painting it black.

I stripped it and now looks much more “period” correct for the Z.

I had a set of beautiful 3 piece billet HRE 841R’s I rebuild a few years ago and sold. The last owner got rid of his focus and I had a chance to get them back for a great price. A little paint chipping and stuff from storage and use, but not bad. Still even has the pilot super sports in the same condition I sold em.

19x8.5 et42. I Originally refinished them gloss black lips with satin black centre’s. Right now they have 2” lips. Wouldn’t mind getting 2.5” lips and getting them properly powdercoated but am unsure what colour scheme to go. Suggestions?

I could sound stupid to ask. I thought 3 pc wheels have screws all around the rim. And is it easy to ask for a bigger lip from HRE and assemble/swap by yourself?

Multiple ways of joining these wheels. I’m the one who originally split and refinished them (it’s a hobby). And yes these are standard 19” 40 hole reverse lips (North American style. NA/JDM/euro have slightly different sizing for reverse lip)

These wheels are a non-sandwhich face mounting. When centre’s have threaded holes that the m8 rim screws mount through the rear

Motor is built, had it's first break-in, and oil system is now fully plumbed. Took the car out for its first road test, very short just for these photos. Need to work on the stance, not a fan of the rake.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49938833077_3c786a5615_b.jpg

Dropped it off at the alignment shop today, which might seem backwards as I'm still going to adjust the height, but once it's set I can mark / measure it and return it to the same settings in my shop. But getting that initial setting is far easier with an alignment rack.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49938017073_f7f029ee88_b.jpg

The rear still needs some cosmetic issues taken care of, to eliminate the chrome...but I somehow ordered less black anodized bolts than I needed. Doh!

On my civic EJ1, I swapped on a new tyc condenser and a new receiver/dryer and changed every o ring I encountered. Trying out my new AC equipment I managed slightly better AC in my 500k+ kms civic. The compressor is just too tired, will swap another on next. PS, Don’t order a tyc, half the tubes of stock.

Started cleaning up the TSX, need to go over the car and decide if I’ll turn it into a daily driver or part it out.

I swapped in a battery to the MR2, fired right up and purrs. So good, I have to finish this car.

Over the last week replaced a dead bad taillight assembly, that USD conversion on the assembly WutFace I got a rep, OEM would've been crazy expensive, surprisingly the part fit pretty well and looks pretty identical to OEM on the other side.

Also replaced both PCV valves, cleaned both throttle bodies, and replaced both air filters. The relearning idle etc took longer than the actually repair.. No more hesitation idling on hot days. Next up will be valve cover gaskets probably due to the subsequent PCV being jammed up and blowing out the drivers side bank.

Still not regretting buying this rebuilt Montreal-mobile, yet :lol

I went to put the plastic undertrays back on so I could move the car out of the garage for a bit, and for some reason decided while I was there I should tighten up the trans cooler lines that have a slight leak. Some of you can guess where this is going. As I turned it I noticed it wasn't really getting tighter, then I noticed it had some side to side play. The adapter fitting then stripped out of the trans. When I checked the other one it had the same side to side play and after a couple wiggles came out too. It looks like the problem is the threads in the trans don't start til a few mm in, and the adapters are very short, so there's only 2 threads of engagement. Rather than get too annoyed at the shop that supplied the fittings or the shop that installed them I'm just trying to be happy it happened in the garage and not while driving as that likely would've resulted in a destroyed transmission.

I still have the stock lines and could put them back in, but they're 29 years old. I have nice new AN lines already the correct length and hooked to the cooler so I'm hoping to find some longer adapters, top up the fluid, and be good to go.

The mess it snowballed into:

^^ I absolutely won’t always run this on the street. Thankfully removing the element isn’t difficult and can be done solo. I wasn’t going to install it until my other aero stuff comes in, but ended up booking a track day so I figured I should get it on and adjusted now.

Looking at the CFD, at my 6° AoA I should be getting ~210lbs of downforce at 160kmh assuming clean air.

Holy shit... What do you have on the front end to counter this? I think I saw a bit of a splitter before. Is that enough (until your other new aero arrives)?

I have a chassis mount undertray with a diy splitter ( 4” ) that will have to do for now. My CF hood/fenders are made to order, so they won’t be here for quite a while. The canards I want aren’t shipping to Canada due to the covid (they’ve had a bunch of packages go missing over the border so the axed international). I also have a line on a discontinued front splitter, but the owner is a province away from it in storage and doesn’t want to travel until restrictions are lifted.

DIY splitter is on now. for those wondering, its a large sheet of birch plywood (iirc 1/2") that is mounted to the chassis via the rally protection, which also ties into the subframe mounted undertray. yes wood is fine, and i want to give it the chance to break away when i inevitably smash into something.

Dropped it off at the alignment shop today, which might seem backwards as I'm still going to adjust the height, but once it's set I can mark / measure it and return it to the same settings in my shop. But getting that initial setting is far easier with an alignment rack.

The rear still needs some cosmetic issues taken care of, to eliminate the chrome...but I somehow ordered less black anodized bolts than I needed. Doh!

What year is your beetle? is the passenger side mirror stock? My 72 has no passenger mirror I was thinking of adding one.

CCA-Dave
08-01-2020, 09:59 AM
This one is a 1968, but heavily modified. The mirrors are not factory, and I'd have to go look up which model they actually are. 1972 Beetles didn't come from the factory with a passenger side mirror (wasn't required by law). Be aware that mirrors sold for the passenger side of your car area actually RHD driver's side mirrors, and utterly useless for driving in North America. You will only be able to see the side trim on your car, and nothing helpful.

The only option is to do a full set of alternative mirrors, such as my '68 has, which require drilling the door and filling the factory mirror hole on the driver's side.

Agreed, sound deadening could make marginally improvement, if the factory had already put the right material in. Some people put dynamat in places that do not make any noise, then it just makes the car heavier without noticeable change. From all the cars I've driven, noise mostly come from the glass windows, wheel well (tires), fire wall (engine), and trunk floor (exhaust). So no matter what I put on my Tesla, it won't be dead silence, because noise get into the chassis from the front suspension, but I find there is way less rattling and bass is much pounding after the installation.

I finally got around to putting the new trans cooler line adapters in and putting the cooler itself back on. I ended up doing a full fluid change as well since I wasn't totally sure the shop used the right stuff before and I really don't want to be risking a 30 year old transmission that's a royal PITA to remove to save a few bucks.

A handy trick I learned about was pulling the transmission vent out and filling it from there. It made it a breeze compared to trying to fandangle a tube or something into the fill hole.

I'm ok with the black roofs, but not a fan of blacking out the pillars.

I feel in general, black is being overused on anything they want to try to advertise as sporty and cool. Off the top of my head, the Veloster N is one of the worst culprits. The rear bumper is black, the spoiler is black. The car looks like it has a lifted ass and the silhouette of the car doesn't flow since the spoiler kind of "disappears". Black areas create the illusion of void spaces and draw attention away.

I might as well use this chance to recommend the Pilot Frixion erasable pens.
I absolutely love them. They actually have good ink flow, uses friction heat to erase, and you can rewrite on the same spot without issues.

Not like the PaperMate erasable ones from the 90's that had an eraser on the top, which really just acted like sandpaper and shreds the top layer of the paper off.

In those specific scenarios, yes you have to be careful. The ink basically reacts to temperatures, but it never really "goes away".

It needs to be 60°C for the ink to vanish, but -10°C, the ink actually becomes visible again. You can stick it in the work freezer for a while, lol.

Serious question #2, is that vent part of your aero package? or is it just there because it only comes vented?
Not very serious question, how's the fit? Seems to be somewhat decent.

Saves about 4lbs a side or something like that. I would never say I have an “aero package” as that makes it seem thought out. I’m just a ricer who happens to track his car sometimes, so all my mods are mostly just for fun. Fenders are 0.9” wider each side, and vented. Fit is what you’d expect for an aftermarket carbon part. The drivers side is probably 90%, the passengers side was originally maybe 60%, but after some adjustment/mods I’d say I’ve got it to about 80%. Just unboxed the hood tonight and spot a few imperfections, but hard to see at night so I’ll wait til tomorrow

armor all.....ugh please god no.

@sonick Please do report back re the Ceramic Spray results. Interested.

Could chime in about this. Been using the Hybrid Ceramic stuff for the past few months.

First started with the Meguairs Spray.(https://www.amazon.ca/Meguiars-Hybrid-Ceramic-Wax-Protection/dp/B07TD8CS3J/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=meguiars+hybrid&qid=1604970960&sr=8-1) My god this stuff is too easy to apply. Literally spray on clean wet car and just rinse it off. It's honestly some witchcraft that somehow it adheres to the paint and creates some of the best dang water beading this side of mars.
Now, I try to wash the car about once a month if I can. Lasts that long atleast, haven't gone any longer. I have a white car, non metallic so its not crazy shiny or anything but its all about that beading. Spray it on the wheels and it repels brake dust like wearing a neck-brace to your junior prom.
On windows its just as good as applying Rain-X.

I tried the Turtle Hybrid Ceramic Wax Paste next on the brothers car. https://www.amazon.ca/Turtle-Wax-53412-Solutions-Ceramic/dp/B07XYPS3PV/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=turtle+hybrid&qid=1604971157&sr=8-7 It's black, hasn't been properly washed or treated in atleast a year or two and the appropriate amount of swirls and micro-scratches. This one is supposed to be one-step polish and protection. Not as easy to apply, apply like regular wax but don't need no orbital polishers or anything and wipes off super easy.
Both me and the brother weren't expecting anything crazy with a off-the-shelf product, especially one that is one-step. We were pleasantly surprised. Brought the shine back, got rid of quite a bit of the micro-scratches and still beads water like crazy. Now, it says its supposed to last up to a year but I highly doubt that. We'll see how it holds up this winter since he ain't paying me a dime to wash their car. Family amirite.

TL;DR. I'm converted like a white shirt, grey pants, name-tag toting Jehovah's Witness strolling up into nobodies business. This stuff is the best thing to happen to the detailing world in a long time imo.

The Turtle Carmic Wax mentioned above is great..I tried it on my old Pilot. Only con was it was very difficult to remove... left smudges in certain areas. Used a damp microfiber cloth and that seemed to get rid of smudges. Lasted at least 6 months, then sold the truck. Did hide some surface scratches.

Meguires stuff I used on my Tacoma, very supreised at ease of application and the water bead. Been 2 months curious how long it will last.

...Driving is also about pleasure, not just commuting. Long day of work, go for a nice drive to relax.

I absolutely agree. Even commute to work was pleasure for me. This thing is a blast to drive even in the city. But I probably won't be going out all that much especially during the winter and with the pandemic going on. I honestly don't have anywhere to go, lol. I only drove my car about 3 times in the final month before my insurance expired. I might bring it back out in the summer, but we'll see. Maybe just for cruising/meet up purposes.

I'm planning to use this time to do a full inside and outside detail since that's something I enjoy but always hated how a daily driven car would only stay clean for a few days before it rains again. Now it's a "garage queen".

+1 I've been using Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Wax spray since it was released. I used to go nuts with waxes, this shit is 10x easier to apply, and lasts just as long as any other wax I've used. I can confirm that it easily lasts AT LEAST 3 months even being driven at highway speeds in the rain, cause that's how long I waited in between washing one of my cars, and when it was still beading.

Learned about this Turtle Wax Ceramic Spray from redflagdeals recently and picked up two bottles.

Spent a few hours yesterday washing the e82, clay barring, and applying the ceramic spray all over including glass and wheels.

Let it cure and applied another coat the next day. Hopefully that should last awhile, let's see if this spray is all that it's hyped up to be.

Spent all weekend swapping seats, brake rotors + calipers, steering wheel and shift knob from my car to Skunkworks' car. Brakes took up majority of the time. Brake rotor retaining screws were all seized to shit - had to drill them out. Parking brakes were seized, so had to mess with it for a long time before it released the rotor. Calipers were annoying cause you have to twist the caliper off, no nut like many other cars. Brake bleed was fine, but had to CT run for a 9mm wrench. Just when I thought I was done - realized I had to bleed the clutch. It takes a 6mm wrench. Facepalm. Didn't end up doing seats cause I would have to swap the whole seat rail and wiring.

The cold overcast weather and light rain made me wash and claybar the car. Unfortunately most of the marks in my paint were actual scratches and chips, but that’s the cost of track days and rallycross lol. Ended up buying a bottle of the meguiars ceramic spray wax (since it doesn’t need 24h to cure). Car looked great for about an hour until I took the dog for a walk and got it filthy :(

Finally got around to tuning the AWD and ABS in the RS. Went with the T16 version which keeps SWVEC on, but locks the rear diff for launch control. Ups the rear bias of the system as well. Reallt changes the dynamics of the RS.

Also as a bonus, flashed the ABS.... so when you’re in drift mode, the handbrake sensor triggers the rear ABS pump, disengages the centre diff and locks the wheels = hydro e-brake :p

Whoa rear diff is active until 340f? That seems like it would COOK the diff fluid, wouldn't it?

Also have you noticed it going into fwd mode much? Rear diff cooler in the works?

320icar
12-12-2020, 03:55 PM
I’ve only ever had the RDU (rear drive unit aka e-diff) shut off once, it was the last session in the August Ridge track day (35°c ambient temps). All other track days it’s been fine.

As for the temps, it’s actually an inferred temperature from the centre diff (PTU, power transfer unit) as the RDU doesn’t have its own sensor. So even if you add a diff cooler, if the PTU gets hot it will still shut off the diff. Stock temp limit is 160°, which I trust ford to extensively research.

How does regenerative braking work with aftermarket set ups?

asian_XL

It is not an issue. I can still use either mode when driving : low gen or standard gen

The problem with Base Performance is 4100lb car, near 500hp, but comes with SR+ 320mm brake. It is dangerous to stop the car at highway speed or emergency stop in city. Regen only slow down your car but not grab your brake to stop.

Decided I finally had some time over the holidays to clean up the interior a bit. For only being a shift knob and a wheel cover, it's amazing how much it changes the feel of the car. Wheel was in pretty rough shape to start out, 16 years and 180k kms of wear and tear will do that to any wheel, let alone an Alcantera one.

Replacement cover was from eBay actually for like $50, pretty similar to what BIC_BAWS was getting at, just had to do some minor trimming to make it fit more accurately but I’m super happy how it turned out without spending the money on a Coby wheel or something similar for $600+.

As for the trim I actually threw a couple coats of plastidip on it for now until I can find a new replacement. Very similar in colour to stock and can only tell if looking for it closely. Overall cheap and easy fix for now that looks 100x better than it did before

Installed Powerflex engine/motor mounts. Cleaned up all the factory chassis ground points and added an extra ground strap, which fixed my misfire and now she idles much smoother. Also finished installing my AEM v3 WMI setup and received my base tune form Stratified. Charge air temps are down ~20° and boost was raised to 27psi. Can’t wait to let the car adjust and do some datalogs to see where it ends up. Also went full rice mode and added some more heat wrap on the intake pipes lol

On the civic, I made 2 holes to feed the air filter.

The car has some challenges, a 74mm throttle body, 7.5lbs flywheel. Had some random stalling when the throttle plate slams shut. I’ve also been playing with cold starts. Running AEM series 2, WOT tuning and warm starts were easy. Just so many other things to mess with in an attempt to have OE manners.

put 38psi rather than recommended 42psi
stock suspension has to go. It is so unrefined, people use TSportline springs and it makes the car more comfortable.

range really depends on your right foot. I can get 109wh/km with 245 front and 275 rear. In average, I get 175wh/km from heavy foot.

I was thinking of springs as the wheel gap is horrible, but I'm not sure if Tesla will use that as an excuse to void warranty and I definitely want Tesla to have warranty:pokerface:

what the, 42 PSI in a sedan is considered normal?

my stock bridgestone tire is rated at 44 PSI max, and car manufacturer recommends (from the door jamb) 36 PSI. I thought that was on the higher end already for a sedan.

Nowadays, yes. My focus RS runs 46psi front/rear. There are reasons that I won’t get into here unless ppl want me to. So most owners run 41/39 which is on the threshold of the tpms light. We also use lowering springs to make the ride more tolerable

asian_XL

any mod will void that particular part warranty, not all. I have wheels, coilover, sway, endlink, big brake, camber kit replaced, Tesla won't want to touch my bottom half of my car.lol Too low will scrape the battery, even with coilover there are still 2 fingers gap.

42psi is harsh. I set it to 36 and TMPS gives me warning immediately. 38psi is acceptable, just need better spring to make it ride like a normal car.

My sold SLK weight 3100lb, recommended 34psi
My mazda5 weight 3500lb, recommended 32psi
My dad Alphard weight nearly 5000 lb, recommended 35psi

Tesla set its tire pressure to 42psi with the reason to gain better EPA, it is absolutely harsh to drive around with 42, maybe 36 is the best.

So far no noticeable loss of range. I had the stock 18's without covers on before. These are about 10% heavier than stock so there should be a minor range loss but it shouldn't be too dramatic.

I'm fine with the stock suspension and ride height, i'm not taking the car racing and just wanted to improve the look over the stock wheels.

109 wh/km is extremely good range, as is 175 when you are heavy on the accelerator. In the winter I probably average somewhere in the 180/190 with normal driving due to having the heat on. In the summer it's more like 140/150 during normal driving though.

Nah it actually cost way more than that, but it comes with a MAF recalibration from the dealer and there is less fuss when it comes to warranty as it's a GM part. It also helps with the growing tinkeritus I have with the car. If I happen to visit Vancouver, VPD also can't bother me for it... Hopefully.

The gain is about 15~20 WHP/WTQ from what I have seen online from people who dynoed it.

Mustang GT supposedly has a Ford Performance kit as well that includes an intake, a bigger throttle body and a tune. Costs over a grand, but could be worth it if you are going for maximum kills next time you hit a crowd while keeping the warranty. :troll:

I recall talking to a BRZ owner before and he told me that header is usually a mod that can unlock a bit of power and get rid of that torque dip in the mid-range. A header does cost more to buy and install, though. That’s why I can never leave the turbo game. So amazing on modern carsYep, if you are going for easy power gains then turbocharging is the clear winner.

That said, there is a reason I picked a Camaro over a used ATS-V. Same platform but I really want to enjoy a big NA V8 while we still can. :alonehappy:

Yeah the NVH was another big reason for finding a Limited.

Noise in not sure as I haven't taken it on a prolonged highway trip, which I find the sport has pretty loud road noise. So that is TBD.

Vibration and harshness is much better in the limited. It feels more dampened when I shut the doors, and it is waaay more comfortable when going over rough streets. Comparing directly to the Sport, the limited feels like it's floating over rough roads.

So my wife had the same problem with speed with a lot of the "economy" SUVs. She was spoiled driving my FBO MS3 and it was a learning curve already "side-grading" to a Mini Cooper 1.5t. The 1st day we picked up the Cooper she tried to overtake a bunch of cars getting onto a ramp.

Me: "What are you doing?"
Her: "Passing them?"
Me: "You can't do that in this car."
Her: "Why?"
Me: "You've got less than half the power...."

Tuner went on pretty quickly after that. (+20hp, + 20-30tq)

When we looked for a family SUV to trade the Mini in for, anything that was slowing than 7s to 100 was out of the question.

Does the Limited have more sound deadening? The smaller wheel size would make a ton of difference for the harshness on roads. Toyota's suspension tuning are always under-damped imo.

I am not sure officially if there's any sound deadening difference between Sport and Limited, but on first impression the door close on the Limited feels more solid/heavy.

Even with the smaller winter tires on the Sport (pictured), the Limited rides better. The suspension tuning is indeed different between Limited and Sport.

more deadening is usually added when they refresh a model, not so much between trims for similar years

I assumed your sport was several years older/pre-facelift

I have a 93 Prelude SR-V I've been working on, it's got collector plates already but I was getting the dreaded ABS light shortly after startup... every single one has this problem.

Anyway, removed the ABS pump, and have to clean these little pins that are supposed to slide out from centrifugal (or centripetal? My physics is too old) motion when the motor spins up to pressurize at start-up... but they get gummed up and don't slide out and the ABS light gets tripped as a result. I think most Prelude owners just leave it because it's too much trouble to get the pump out, but I'm a glutton for punishment so... why not...

so ive been dabbling with some carbon fibre. i have pretty much zero experience so learning from scratch is hard. everything from choosing cloth, release agents, vacuum processes, what kind of resins, what style of which resin you chose etc. all of this tailored to the DIY in the garage that anyone could do.

done a couple end plates so far. ive learned a lot, but CF is expensive as all hell. makes learning it a bit difficult... but i am learning, so its not all wasted money right?

**edit** I’ll add photos shortly, going for dog walk

It’s all on the angle of the photo. I can give some point form of just “food for thought” of things I’ve learned. CF is carbon, FG fibre glass

- carbon fibre is expensive. 50” wide is $50/yard for your pretty standard 2x2 twill. Same size fibreglass cloth is about $10.
- CF normally used epoxy resin, it’s strong but for 1L costs about $65. FG normally uses polyester resin, which is about $18/L. Massive difference. I chose to run the cheaper poly resin since I’m just learning and I expect to make a lot of scrap material. Strength is correlated between the medium. Epoxy is like CF, poly is like FG.
- for resins there are waxed and unwaxed. It’s confusing but the easiest way to figure it out is, If you’re laminating multiple sheets or doing multiple pours, use unwaxed. If it’s a single coat. Or finishing top coat, or just a wet layup then waxed. Waxed means it air cures hard and without tack. But if you need to pour on top you must sand it down.
- a great budget setup is using the cheap vacuum storage bags from the dollar store meant for blankets etc and a shop vac. It’s just about the right amount of vacuum to conform the peel ply/bleeder cloth to the part, but not enough to pull resin out of the part. Bonus is the smell is kept in the bag and it’s not nearly as noxious.
- use more resin than you think. I was too concerned with getting the right ratio between cloth to resin for weight and strength, but that’s shooting for the stars. Mix more than you need and soak the shit out of your material. It’s better to waste $2 in resin than scrap $100 worth of cf because it didn’t saturate enough
- thinking ahead and prep-work is key. getting a quality finished product right the first time is way easier and cheaper than having to do a tonne of post work to make it passable.

My failures, there are lots.

- first flat plate I made. 8 layers CF, super strong and 2.3mm thick. Laid up on two pieces of glass with some mold release. I didn’t put enough resin down on the glass before my first layer of cf. it visually looked fully saturated but it wasn’t. Once I pulled the part, the surface finish was great but I wasn’t able to fully trace the parts I were planning on. Lesson learned, USE MORE RESIN. you can see from the photo that most the edges (easiest seen at 120'clock) did not get fully saturated. also, when trying to cut the cloth i heard of a tip online to just say use masking tape. i did, but i did not realize that YOU CANNOT PEEL THE TAPE OFF WITHOUT RUINING THE WEAVE!. so i just had to send it with the tape on. this is one of the reasons the edges didn't absorb resin. i also learned that pinching pennies by using as little cloth as possible is the wrong idea. yes its expensive, but just suck it up and use more material so you KNOW you can get your finished part out of it.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51092671921_155295da22_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2kQTijz)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/2kQTijz) by 320iCar (https://www.flickr.com/photos/30576355@N04/), on Flickr

- second failure was another set of end plates. I couldn’t find a piece of glass or mirror the right size. Found a cheapo picture frame with a plastic front piece. Looked online and info said if you wax it, you can pull off of plastic no problem. WELL, I totally forgot I wasn’t using epoxy, I was using poly resin. Soooo the next day when I opened the vac bag, the sheet of plastic had melted with the texture of CF. Part was salvageable but surface finish was bunk. i did use the correct method for cutting straight lines though, you pull a strand out of the weave and it leaves a straight line through the entire cloth. cut and repeat! you can see the imprinted tecture on the plastic, which is pretty cool. i also need to learn to lay my weave down straighter. its sooo flexible im surprised. this was only 6 ply. still strong but i preferred the feeling of 8

- 3rd failure was I decided to skin the front of my second endplates. For some reason I had it in my head that I will use the vacuum setup again. So I laid a single sheet of cf on glass, soaked it, then laid my endplates on top and sealed it. WELL the pull was horrible. The resin never set properly because it’s unwaxed, and the resin that was suppose to glue to the endplate just pushed outwards and soaked into the breather. Ended up just peeling off. you can see on the image below how the resin was squeezed out from below the endplate. my brain didn't think ahead about how the pressure of the vacuum bag pushing down on the hard part would push the resin away.

- still had two precut pieces so I open air skinned the endplates again. Two pours of resin, but again it’s unwaxed so it’s not cured properly. It takes a little heat (sun is fine) and much more tire to cure vs waxed resin which will not tack up. Resin is now nice and thick but will need to be sanded down and polished to be level.

I have a bunch of CF parts on my car. I now have way more respect and now don’t mind paying the extra cost for professionally made. but like ive said before, this is a learning process. you dont expect to make carbon fibre doors your first day, just like any new hobby. i will say with every failure ive learned a lesson. so over time i hope to make a bunch more parts

But that's really cool. Kudos for getting your hands dirty on making your own parts. How much are you into it now? Are you planning to continue?

For 3x yards cf, 2x yards peel ply, breather/bleeder ply, 1L resin, Mold release, cups/sticks/brushes and consumables etc everything you need to get started, I’d say about $325 or so. Half of that cost is the the cf alone.

I will continue. I’m starting as simple as possible (flat sheets). Once I’m comfortable I’d like to remake my canards and splitter in cf, as well as other parts. The only real issue is the sheer cost of materials. You’d think a 12x12” square isn’t much, but with 8 layers that’s almost $40, then x2 If you’re making a pair. Not including all the other consumables.

I need to do research on using fibreglass sheet as some layers, or a foam core material (that won’t melt with poly). If anyone on here has fibreglass experience please hit me up

I've been considering on getting rid of my 09 sport v6 because of hip/back issues. I love the motor but the ride can be quite harsh and most people don't believe me that stock setup could be this stiff lol. Would love to pick up a clean 09+ limited v6 but they're getting hard to find.

From the research I did a few years ago, the base and limited have the same susp setup. The sport model differs by having tokico blue shocks/struts with apparently stiffer springs as well.

Washed my car today. Looked gorgeous when I was done. On my drive home from where I washed it, it started raining a little bit and I got passed by a huge truck who sprayed me with mist from his mud flaps so now the car has water spots again.
Sigh.

Well cleaner than yesterday I guess lol

So i picked up my 2007 Sky 2 weeks ago.
GM forums rumor a tune that increases the hp from 260 to 290, and tq from 260 to 340. With dyno numbers.

Bought the kit, showed up 2 days ago, car re programmed.

Boost went from around 15psi to 22psi, my god, never knew a plug and play tune could turn the car into a monster.

The optional tune from GM? My friend had it done to his old Sky, it was quite the difference. Kinda makes you wonder why they didn't just make them like that to begin with.

Same deal with my old Grand Cherokee, a couple hundred bucks and 10 mins with a dongle plugged in and it's a completely different vehicle.

The tune for the Sky was from GM and kept the warranty though.

The Jeep one I know why, it's pretty obvious they didn't want it having more power than the POS 5.7L V8 that likes to blow up for no reason. The same engine is used in Europe with the same power as the tune gives you, sometimes more.

On my dirty hatch, yesterday actually. I rescaled the fuel and timing tables, replaced my 20 year old aem wideband with a new one(voltage output to ems is correct but the gauge displays leaner than it actually is). I installed a head unit and speakers. Finally was able to break isolation and leave the house, I picked up some valve stems and mounted up the last 2 tires. Now I'm fine tuning the ride height.

Yeah, I mean it could last the period of the warranty. But one would think it does put a strain on the car. Broken cars, bad rep. Or they just don't want their X car making more power than their y car etc.
