Like many people on RS, I'm getting the impression that the majority of members here don't even do the most basic mechanical jobs themselves anymore and have zero mechanical ability. I want to see who among us has grease covered hands, cut up knuckles and as much invested in tools as most people do on mods. Post what you did to your own or a friends vehicle today. Do not post what you paid someone to do to your vehicle.

Pulled off the front wheel of my 99 CRV to see what the hell was making the squealing noise.
The glue on the delco shims had failed and the shims shifted over enough to rub against the mounting of the rotor.
So I removed the parts that are supposed to help stop noise because they were making noise.
Only takes a couple of minutes, but I hate working in the rain, sucksors.

I always remove those shims and just put red "stop squeal" product

Yeah, I've put in brakes without shims, and no anti sqeal with no issues. If I do get any noise, ill put some in, but for now Ill just leave it. I've never seen the glue on shims fail like that before, so I was suprised.

That's why I rip the shim off, seen more problems with the shims than without them.(no problems without them)

if your sliders are seized then your inner would wear more than the outer.

I don't think a seized caliper would wear only the inner pad though. Although I could be wrong.
You need to grease the Sliders if they don't have any grease on them.
The inner pad wear could be caused by improperly installing the inside pad. The inside pad has pins to stop the piston from turning when you apply your ebrake. Check the pins for any wear, if it does, there's your problem.
It's a floating rear Caliper. So the piston should NOT be hitting the pins AT ALL. The Notches on the piston should clear it completely. The sliding pins should be kept greased to keep it from seizing.
When you install the new pads, again, make sure the notches on the Piston clear the Pins on the Pad. Pump the brakes and pull the e-brake a couple times after it is all back together and it should line itself up, as long as your calipers are functioning correctly.
That, or it's a sticky ebrake cable, and it's keeping them engaged at the caliper.
Edited for Clarification. I fobbed and got Notches and Pins mixed up. + Pictures
Piston has Notches to clear the Pins on the Pad.
Caliper. note the notches.

The pixels on my gauges have been disappearing since I bought the car 9 years ago and dealership wants $1500 to replace the gauges. I can't tell how many km I have, what light bulb is out, or coolant level, etc. Last week I discovered I can buy the ribbon on Ebay 5 for $15 and try to fix it myself :fullofwin:. So I spent 6 hours taking the gauges apart to replace the ribbon and I got almost all the pixels back except for 2 lines on the trip odometer.

Possibly. The torque required to remove a bolt is higher than that which was initially applied to it, but assuming the drain bolt was torqued to 30ft/lb even that should not be significant. It's very easy to cross thread a bolt into an aluminium oil pan, especially as the car gets older and the threads have sustained a bit of damage through routine oil changes.
I hope it works out and it's just a matter of getting a little more leverage on the bolt!

I really hope it's just the bolthead getting worn out... so I can't apply as much power onto it anymore... it's kinda stripped so yeah I don't think I should try further unless I have a hex-bolt wrench rather than a ring spanner

changed all the old bosch type fuses out of the mercedes.
the old ones didnt seem that bad when they in the fuse box but when I had them all out, they looked horrible. Some of the electronics were acting funny, like the dash flashing. the power windows were cutting in and out. cleaned the terminals and new fuses all around and now everything works as they should. a odd day to work on the car , but after work had sudden motivation lol
-changed spark plugs to cold range NGK Iridium 10's
-tested resistance on water temp sensor and all of my coilpacks

-did re-wiring
-Put teflon tape on the oil feed line going to the turbo.. the engine bay was quite bare at 1 point, here are 2 pics lol.

Went to look at a 1996 Integra LS with 190k km, the guy wanted 2k for it. So I went and popped open the hood, it had a b18c1 and in the back it had a DOHC VTEC emblem. Turned out it was a gsr and the guy didnt even know, so I ended up buying a gsr for 2k. =D

Had to drive to the Superstore on Marine to rescue my mom after her car was a no-start. Turns out her battery had died and when she jumped it, the old keyless entry that was on the car (the remote she had was broken so she just decided to leave the remote at home and lock the car manually) came back to life and promptly immobilized the car.
Replaced my stock steering wheel today, and proceeded to stare at it

Finally got around to removing the ridiculously restrictive stock intake resonator box. Now the intake setup is essentially a short ram system, though I still need to find a way to route more cold air to the air inlet. Pics to come.
Also installed an exhaust tip lol. Can't stand how the stock pea shooter looks.
EDIT: That is, until I can get myself to dish out $450+ on a proper cat back :troll:

Steering wheel became loose. I assume from hasport motor mounts causing so much vibration lol.
Fixed that, sort of. Still need to get a proper nylock nut.
Took Takata harness out and put in a different Takata harness. Nobody would notice.

Here we go.
tl;dr - removed giant intake resonator and made a DIY short ram intake from existing intake parts.
Essentially just took off the huge stock intake resonator and used the original snorkel and directly stuck that into the rubber hose. Works like an SRI, though the intake location is still not as close as I want it to be for really cold air. I'll need to route a tube either through that hole at the side or route it from the front bumper grille. This is a common DIY upgrade for Element owners who do not wish to spend a fortune on a CAI/SRI, as the stock intake/resonator setup is extremely restrictive.

Bolted on an exhaust tip as a spur of the moment decision. Decided I didn't want to see that sorry peashooter excuse of a stock exhaust pipe anymore. Will do for now until I can afford a proper cat-back. Made sure to mount it as far back on the stock pipe as possible so it doesn't stick out from under the bumper, to avoid having my E posted in the hall of shame  This picture makes it seem like it's sticking out, it's not. It's flush with the bumper.

did you put a cone filter to the end of the snorkel?
Akinari
05-30-2012, 03:24 PM
The stock airbox is untouched and left in place, the original filter is inside that plastic cylindrical(ish) compartment where the rubber hose is connected to on the other end.
