Any idea why the guy in Vancouver/Richmond gets to stay home, instead of hospital?
Is he handcuffed to his bed? Does he get to go out freely?
He pretty much gets to stay home. However, no one is supervising him and he can go out if he wishes. But I mean the guy turn himself in so I doubt he would go out.

Lol, at the bat in that poster. Anyway, most of you know I frequent the laundromats in the GVRD. Things have not changed. Guys still cough and hork into the sinks and urinals, grab their junk and shove it back into its resting area, dripping shit onto the floor. Picking their nose right after and eating the shit. No washing of hands whatsoever. Then, they go play on the slots and roulette machines. I’m going to have to carry disposable gloves with me from now on. Someone should swab the machines to see how filthy they actually are.

They better at least quarantine them for the incubation period and not release them into the wild. Or is that too much of a racist suggestion?

We've got more islands than both of them combined.. just need to find one with enough facilities.
They are only monitoring them - not quarantined - for 3 days in the US. Also, apparently it is voluntary - if they wish to leave, they can ask to leave.

It's getting a bit crazy out there. In the first presser, Carrie Lam said the government will work with Chinese manufacturers after new years to obtain mask supplies in HK. People took that to mean they were doing what they did in Macau, providing everyone with masks to prevent an outbreak.
Today they came out and said that was just a rumor. They won't be providing anyone with anything at this point. This led to even more panic buying

It's one of those weird situations, where people are doing the right thing (everyone wearing masks) for the wrong reason (they think it stops them from getting sick). You don't want to tell them that, because you want everyone in a mask in case they get sick (this is where masks ARE effective). But at the same time, you feel bad that people are going crazy trying to get masks.

That is correct, it is more important to prevent spread of virus than to try protect oneself.
A reminder that the virus is transmitted through the mouth nose eye, you don’t even have to have someone cough in your face, as long as your hands are contaminated and you touch your face, you could potentially be infected.
Below is a link to the precautions that healthcare professionals should take:

Note even a healthcare professional is only required to use N95 in aerosol generating procédure, and during normal care, only droplet and contact precaution is required. Unless you in close proximity to a patient for extended period of time, a mask is not required as part of prevention.
VCH droplet and contact precautions signs:

2 things about Joshua's post. 1) Proper newcast will say the Corona Virus... douchbags who don't give a fuck, always labels this as WuHan virus. 2) Hong Kong is now under the "severe" hit of Coronavirus, and unfortunately, our earloop masks here now face tremendous supply shortage. Fuck you!!! Please define what you consider "severe".... 10? 100000 confirmed? 3) Lastly, if Hong Kong gov't is withholding medication which is actually preventive or curing... sure... it's only a fucking mask and not even considered 100% effective.
Hornby.
man I used to go up to Hornby to dive after the 6 gill sharks!
For the life of me I don't understand why people eat snakes, bats and other animals that carry disease. What is the obsession with eating every type of meat in China? This won't be last outbreak if they don't regulate what meat is OK for consumption.
Even beef / chicken / pork are regulate and outbreak still happens, esp. in china & even HK.
Being Asian, I do get this a lot when i came here in the 80s, from shark fin soup, to pigeons/quail with the head deep fried, to snake soup, snack gall bladder, i got made fun of all the time. Saying why we are so gross and uncivilized. I HONESTLY cannot tell you what the obsession is in our culture, but I can say, some do taste really good.
Don't westerns go over to thailand and eat the crazy shit like scorpions, bugs, crickets????
My dad once asked some red necks neighbours on why they feel like they need to eat bison + deer + bear (they bought us a dozen of bear sausage to share)..... and the guys in the interiors said it's just things they do when they go hunt and eat.
No different than when i go up and volunteer on a native researve and they hunt and eat seal meat (fuck it was gross).

The correct name is "2019 Novel Coronavirus" or "2019-nCoV" changed from de facto name "Wuhan Coronavirus" for political reasons. "Coronavirus" itself is just a type of virus - many common colds are a coronavirus. SARS was a coronavirus.
Obviously a lot of people are going to stick to the original name though, I wouldn't call them "douchebags" for it. Don't complain about the name because it's named after a place in China - MERS is even more deadly and nobody bothered to change its name LUL (Edit: They actually changed naming conventions (https://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/notes/2015/naming-new-diseases/en/) after MERS)
There's no medication to help, but a vaccine is being developed and is already in animal testing phase. Should be around 1 year for it to be ready for the public use.

Guess you haven't been to China. Most washroom don't provide soap for you to use. In some places in China they don't even provide sink for you to wash your hands in(this happens even in Beijing so you can image in a 2nd 3rd tire city like WuHan there are even less sinks and soap for people to use). When I use to go back I bring my own wet wipes the antibacterial ones coz I rather no risk it.
Also in China most washroom are not sanitizer you can see shit and poo most of the time and stains. So I can see washing hand might not be so common in China.

Coronavirus declared global health emergency by WHO
The new coronavirus has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization, as the outbreak continues to spread outside China.
"The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The concern is that it could spread to countries with weaker health systems.
The death toll now stands at 170 people in China.
The WHO said there had been 98 cases in 18 countries outside of the country, but no deaths.
Most cases have emerged in people who have travelled from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak began.
What coronavirus does to the body
Coronavirus: A visual guide to the outbreak
Diary of a life in locked-down Wuhan
However, there have been eight cases of human-to-human infection - in Germany, Japan, Vietnam and the United States.
Dr Tedros, speaking at the press conference in Geneva, described the virus as an "unprecedented outbreak" that has been met with an "unprecedented response".
He praised the "extraordinary measures" Chinese authorities had taken to prevent it from spreading.
"Let me be clear, this declaration is not a vote of no confidence in China," he added.
When has this happened in the past?
The WHO declares a Public Health Emergency of International Concern when there is "an extraordinary event which is determined … to constitute a public health risk to other states through the international spread of disease".
It has previously declared five global public health emergencies:
Swine flu, 2009 -The H1N1 virus spread across the world in 2009, killing more than 200,000 people, and a public health emergency was called to ensure the world was carefully monitoring its spread and able to respond, including with vaccines.
Polio, 2014 - Although closer than ever to eradication in 2012, polio numbers rose in 2013. An emergency was declared due to fears the global fight against its eradication could face a major setback.
Zika, 2016 - The WHO declared Zika a public health emergency in 2016 after the disease spread rapidly through the Americas. Although for many Zika symptoms are mild, it can be dangerous for pregnant women and the emergency was called to spur urgent research.
Ebola, 2014 and 2019 - The deadly disease has twice been declared a public health emergency. The first one lasted from August 2014 to March 2016 as almost 30,000 people were infected and more than 11,000 died in West Africa. The WHO cited "the virulence of the virus, the intensive community and health facility transmission patterns, and the weak health systems" in affected countries. A second emergency was declared last year as the disease spread in the DR Congo.

Nothing drastic yet, but you'll start seeing measures being taken, like hand sanitizer pumps everywhere (USE THESE!), bleached floor mats at entrances, hiring cleaners to clean doorknobs, elevator buttons, handrails at regular intervals. At least you SHOULD be seeing that kind of stuff, in countries with more responsible governments.
Some events may start to be canceled - sports games, concerts, movie theatres.
This is going to sound insensitive, but I urge people to avoid places that are really popular with mainland tourists. This isn't to "blame" a certain group, but when literally 98% of all cases have been from people from one city, and the other 2% are from a neighbouring city, you have to keep that in consideration. This will lower your risk, it won't eliminate it.
There have been I think 8 secondary infections outside China (ie. someone from Wuhan infected locals in other countries) and I think that's a pretty low number. In every case except two (two tour guides on a bus in Japan) these have been family members of Wuhan travelers.

Well it started from animals (like many viruses or diseases), but is now spreading human to human.
Some viruses are transmitted from animals to humans, but cannot be transmitted FROM a human to another.
This virus can, and is. It's just nomenclature, but an important distinction.

from biology standpoint
once a person is infected, a virus can't be destroyed but only be suppressed with meds
If he is uninfected, vaccine can provide protection

That's essentially the problem here
Provincial & City government think they can handle the situation. The mentality is "If we can solve it, why bother disclose the problem and put myself in a bad situation that possibly affects my promotion"
The infected number, in reality, is ALWAYS much higher than what was officially announced. They purposely keep the number low to maintain so-call "social stability" and prevent people from panickink, but when everybody thinks the number was purposely underestimate, that creates more social panic...........

Are you kidding, now is the best time to go on a trip! There will be THOUSANDS of mainland tourists NOT THERE PogChamp
Mainland visitors to HK are down to 19.5K and 16K on the first two border control days (Jan 30, 31). The few days before this, it was 27-29K daily
It's not enough for some (edit: most actually. Polls show 80% people responding want a closed border), and the new hospital union plans to strike on Monday
In response, the govt plans to control further, but still no full border closure
Unfortunately the problem si the govt won't negotiate with the people, just tell them what's best for them, and do whatever they can under Xi's thumb. I mean we've seen this since June, and this is just an extension of it.
My opinion on this is a full closure is unnecessary at this point, and would lead to severe issues in daily life, if logistics and food supplies are shut down. I think people are being way too drastic. Shutting out all tourists is a good idea, and be strict with temperature checks and travel histories of everyone else.

Supermarkets seem 100% back to normal as of today. Still no masks or hand sanitizers though.
I live kind of out in the boonies, but near a hiking trail entrance. I noticed a lot more people than usual on the trails, especially families with kids (usually it's just old people on Sundays). Seems a lot of people are doing outdoor activities out of the crowds these days, rather than going shopping which is by far the most popular weekend activity. Hope they stick to it even after this!
"Mall" areas of Kowloon like Kowloon Tong and Megabox, almost 100% people wear masks, maybe 95-98%. I am usually the only one without one, but I'll put one on when it gets really crowded. In MK, there are practically no tourists which is crazy to see, but still lots of locals out and about. With these people, mask wearing is about 70% I'd say, whether it's old or young people. Either they don't care, or just can't find any for regular price. Also lots of smokers who obviously don't give a fuck.
Saw some pharmacies in the area selling them for $400 HKD per box of 50, which is roughly 10X normal price (also who knows how legit these masks are). Nobody was buying those, but lining up at other pharmacies (not sure what they were selling or how much)
HK may have its first case of person to person transmission outside Wuhan travelers. That of course is freaking everyone out. The union backed out of talks with the government, since Carrie Lam refused to show up to the meeting. Strike is still planned for tomorrow.

Where was it? There have been scattered protests and the government tries to find a place to quarantine 'all these sick tourists that keep coming in' that are always in residential areas. SSP was one, as well as Richland Gardens in Kowloon Bay area.
I don't know why they don't just use the Disneyland resort. Disneyland will be closed the entire time, is partially owned by the government, and is far away from any residential area. And it would be comfortable for those who were quarantined, so they don't go nuts in tiny shitty rooms with no amenities. It would be the perfect place to quarantine, and any government with people who have functioning brains would at least consider it.
But nope, let's force the issue and just pepper spray people who say no.

You are right on the partially owned, but because it's also private, gov't doesn't have a right to jeopardize & dedicate the private sector.
No one ever wants it in their backyard so there will always be riots wherever they pick. The only place I can think of is the old airport but now its actual docking ports. During SARS, someone thought of using cruise ships. But because there is a risk of quarantine and corpses there are special regulations on sharing same ventilation systems.

Govt would of course pay for the use of the resort, just like they would for all the other places they're trying to rent. Including those in the private sector. That is not a valid argument.
As for "when will this ever stop" the answer is pretty clear.

well considering >90% of the total 17,000 cases are from mainlanders, of course there is a focus on them. Based on the current stats, I think it's foolish to say HKers are being racist for not letting mainlanders in. This is a health issue we are talking about that is hard to track and even harder to contain once it starts spreading.
If this started in HK, i'm sure China would have closed off all the borders to restrict HKers to leave.

Well yes. HKers in China should remain in China until the virus subsides. If China/HK are really under the 1 country 2 system, then build or find a building that can offer support to HKers in the Mainland until there is more control of the spread of this virus.
It will probably be safer for them to stay where they are rather than be in a crowded border line ups with potential virus carriers.
Stay home, eat, sleep and repeat.

The latest border closing measures are practically useless as far as getting on top of the coronavirus spreading situation is concerned. All it will do is reduce the volume of Hong Kong - China traveller volume by a bit, but all remaining travellers will simply be consolidated to those 3 remaining ports of entry.
Furthemore, the airport and Shenzhen Bay entry points are the highest volume ports of entry for Mainland Chinese visitors anyway, so little is changed.
The way Carrie Lam is handling this is exactly like how she absolutely fxxked up the China extradition law fiasco. At first it was steadfast refusal, then she gave in a little, calling it postponement instead of outright withdrawl, then she gave in a little more, saying the bill is dead, and then she uttered some more nonsense while still refusing to formally withdraw it. If this hypothetical outbreak in the US is as big as the coronavirus outbreak is in China, you'd be out of your mind to think that Canadians wouldn't be screaming to have our borders closed. The federal government would probably be reluctant at first to close the borders, but as the epidemic escalates and public cry for border closure escalates, it'd be silly to think the Canadian gov wouldn't cave into the demands of Canadians. If they didn't, the governing party would be punished for years to come at the polls.

The thing that the "100% closed borders" people aren't taking into account is that HK kind of needs a somewhat open border in order to keep logistics flowing. We rely on China for food and quite a few essential goods. Shutting down the border completely means none of this will be able to make it through anymore.
Sure middle class people and above can go to the supermarket and buy food from other countries, but poorer people rely on low cost meat from China, and especially vegetables.
I guess we could look to other countries for produce, like Thailand, but will the cost be as low? Do countries like Vietnam even export many goods?
I am 100% in favour of strict border controls, but I'm against the idea of a 100% closure to China. I think leaving SZ Bay bridge and Macau bridge can allow things to flow through, while at the same time severely limit the amount of potentially infected people from coming in. Be extra strict with temperature checks and scrutinize their travel. There are plenty of people who NEED to come in, to Hong Kong's benefit, and are at relatively low risk of having the virus.
This current closure should bring daily mainlanders crossing via land down to 2000, from like 20-30K before. That's not zero, but it's pretty damn significant and maybe manageable.
If the government wasn't literally evil, then maybe people would be willing to work with them. But it seems to be that only the most extreme solution will do because of their history.
If they would have done THIS closure on DAY ONE, HK may be at like 5 or 10 infections instead of 20, and people wouldn't be as freaked out.
But nope. Carrie Lam just kept admonishing people, calling them "radicals" while stubbornly closing the borders more and more each day FailFish

Hong Kongers are not demanding a 100% closed border from Carrie right now. As I understand it, they just want the border closed to Mainland Chinese people. Goods and stuff are still expected to come in?
At least that's the gist I have always been getting.

I always got the gist that they want to fully close the border. If you want the border closure to be effective, than you limit hongers leaving to the mainland too.
Mainlanders can't just freely enter unless they have shenzhen hukou (even thats once a week, max 7 day stay) or an entry permit that was issued before the outbreak( new entry permits have been suspended after the outbreak)
They can try for transit through HK for a flight to an international destination, but HK immigration can refuse if they feel such transit is not valid.
I'd be more worried about hongers going to the mainland and coming back with the virus. For example the cruise passenger that got tested positive when the ship was docking at Yokahoma.

1) Most shipments of masks from China are locked down; unable to ship out from China to outside. Customs will just take them. There were 10 boxes declared lost.
2) With masks being shipped out, there has been thefts also. When you call the courier company; they will pay you insurance + 15% of declared value. Tons of anger but you can't not declare them as mask and you can't over declare the content's value.
3) My uncle is going to fly to Indonesia to personally pick up mask to bring back to HK.

Dude things are going to get much, much worse before they get better. It's barely even started yet. Incubation alone can be up to two weeks and we're not even at that point since this thread started. Barring a miracle cure, if it really is R0 3.8, the numbers are going to be staggering before they level out and start to go down. Not to freak anyone out, but this could very possibly be a pandemic the likes of which we haven't even considered possible in the last 100 years. Thankfully we also have technology to fight it, such as the spread of information and the ability to react with quarantines, monitoring, and border closures (lul).
The locked down cities in China are going to be so, so fucked when this is over. The "best case scenario" is that only a few million people get infected, and a few thousand die (remember SARS killed around 300 people) and that only wonderful scenario only happens if this is mostly contained within these cities. It's too late to save them. Why do you think countries are bailing people out of there? Anyone left in these cities are pretty much left to get sick and hopefully not die.
I totally understand the notion of not wanting to ditch your home, and just worry about getting by, but at the same time you can't just live your life like nothing is going on if you're in China or even Hong Kong (and possibly elsewhere eventually)

There are 2 somewhat related issues that are boiling me up in different ways.
The first is China's continual refusal to give Canada a clear pass to evacuate Canadians stuck in Hubei. As far as I know, Global Affairs Canada has arranged for a flight and stand ready to pick those guys up from Hubei, but officially, China is citing some BS excuse of how the Wuhan / Hubei airport and airspace are closed, so our Canadian chartered plane cannot go there to pick the Canadians up. Well... that closure certainly hasn't stopped US, UK, Germany, Japan, etc. from evacuating their citizens...
Of course I have zero proof over this, but I can't help but think that despite being in a time like this, China is still trying to play games with us over the Meng Wenzhou detention and snubbing us.
Another baffling issue is, when these said Canadians are ready to be flown out of Hubei, supposedly they'll be taken to CFB Trenton in Ontario for a 14 day quarantine. That is absolutely the right thing to do, but in the face of that sound policy, our Canadian ports of entry continue to only require self declaration of whether someone has recently been to Wuhan. Right now, the epidemic has already spread so far and wide beyond Wuhan & Hubei. And we continue to keep our borders wide open.
FailFish
If we are gonna quarantine Canadians for 2 weeks when they return from Hubei, why aren't we doing the same to travellers who have been to China in the last 2 weeks?

It could be 10X higher, so 120K infected, 20K dead. More likely it's 20X higher, so 250K infected, 40K dead.

I live in Guangzhou and my daily routine is survival, I go to my local wet market to buy overpriced veggies everyday in morning cuz if not by the afternoon it’s all gone cuz there few stalls of scumbags open
Everyday I’m at home doing nothing cuz the government is scared so they don’t let any business that would have crowded ppl open
So ppl are back to work with fear but they are barely working.......while for me I can’t work because none of my distributor our working
Public transit now runs every 30mins and supermarkets are all closed early (I don’t even live near a big name supermarket)
Just last night I got kicked out of a restaurant (the only one opened late at night) cuz the jackass of a waiter doesn’t know their shitty thermometer is broke, my friend check in fine but when it was my turn, they told me to hold back
Recheck me again and it was the same, then ask to check my friend again and he was high all of a sudden, waiter kicked me out by saying I could be a hazardous
I’m pretty fucking mad at this point cuz I just walked in with 2 military looking guys checked in with their thermostat at the entrance checkpoint but now after a 15 sec walk I’m high all of a sudden
I demanded him to check other random ppl that have been checked (he Refused cuz it would cause fear) and few others already eating were a bit high but it didn’t matter since waiter wouldn’t admit their thermometer is broke
This is all cause by Ignorance, since they didn’t learn jack shit from sars and still continue to buy wild animals to eat from places with dirty non clean environments

Go ahead and complain about the inconvenience while they try to prevent the world's greatest epidemic of all time outside your door.
Better to be mad than dead I guess...
Edit: This may have came off worse than intended, so I'll just say that yeah it sucks when we have to be inconvenienced like this, especially when it's due to someone just being stupid or not doing things right. But think about how serious this issue is, and it might be easier to let this stuff pass. This is not a situation where we can live our lives normally. Not for now, and for some, maybe never again.
There are tons of things to complain about with regards to how bad this has gotten due to incompetence, corruption, etc. We might not even be here if they didn't try to cover it up instead of acting immediately.
But here we are, and we're going to have to deal with some shit. Oh and it hasn't really even started yet, so get used to it.
And for every restaurant that turns you down, think about all the people stuck in locked down cities, or the ones who are dying, family members, pets, etc. All because someone didn't want to "lose face" and deal with a serious but "embarrassing" issue.
This is a really serious thing, it doesn't matter if you have to get your veggies early.

I recently flied back to YVR from TPE, everyone on the flight was wearing a mask except the flight attendants. There were lots of hand sanitizing stations at YVR, but the only screening measure I saw was 1 question at the kiosks asking if I've been to Wuhan in the past 14 days. Answered no and walked right passed the CBSA officers.

i'm in Yellowknife right now and mask here are sold out also. F-ed up.
Chinese people are worried as shit and they are wearing them. Some tour guides are wearing them to protect them from bringing it to other clients.
1st thing they say "why are you wearing a mask? None of us are infected".. ahahahahah OK,I guess I'm going to take your word now.
BC Geoduck + crab are having issues on too much supply. Staff at dim sum places (where my bro works) got laid off until further notice at the one above TD bank on #3 road.
People at Cathy Pacific also got notified they need cash flow = 3 weeks no pay vacation; came thing happened during SARS time.
Embrace for impact all; manufacturer are going to have issues fulfilling orders due to shutdown in china.

Basically to put it short, China is trying to steal and make money off this experimental drug...
Lives are at stake, and guess what... This virus originated from CHINA... Now the Chinese wants to license the drug that THEY didn't even create so other parts of the world HAVE TO PAY to be cured/vaccinated?!
Very classy move China... :rukidding:

How did you come to this conclusion from reading this article? All your conclusions are completely the opposite of what the article says.
They said that China is respecting world copyright issues by doing it the right way instead of infringing upon them and would allow them to start making the drug in China faster for their own citizens because the company that makes it can't make enough of it fast enough... it even says that global sales would be unaffected by any of the steps China is taking.
It's like you read the first line and made the rest up yourself.

What are your thoughts on this news headline from the Province? Personally, I have not been a target of racist attacks as a Canadian Born Chinese, born and raised in Vancouver, during this corona virus outbreak.
The lady that is mentioned in the article, Linda Hao, does make a good point. H1N1 was not labelled the "American virus". Zika was not labelled in the media as the "Brazil virus". Then the Province rag puts out a headline "China Virus" to describe Corona virus.
This sounds to me as an outright attack and bullying by the Province paper against the Chinese community in Vancouver and in other cities around the world. :considered:

If they had done that, someone would be posting an article saying "China ignores company's copyright and steals their work to create and sell counterfeit drugs"
Can't win man. Also I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of the copyright application in this case... I don't believe there's any intention to make money off their own citizens in this case.

There's no requirement of anything, but if I were that person, I'd simply do it out of precaution of anyone around me like co-worker and whatnot. Heck, I'd probably just make a temporary tent in the shed so I don't have to be with my kids.
This is a good question.
I've heard stories of ppl being told to stay home from work for 14 days unpaid after they came back from HK or had a connecting flight at HKG.
What is the legality of employers to require employees to stay home and not pay them.

The closest estimate we can draw from is how the timeline for SARS played out. On the other hand, transmissibility is way higher and far more difficult to track down. The Wuhan coronavirus epidemic has also grown far larger than SARS had ever been.
I fully expect the new cases to peak some time before May, and then it will start trending downward, but how long it would take before it completely dies down is anyone's guess. The real danger is that it cannot be completely eradicated this "season", and sporadic cases continue to occur until we hit Oct / Nov 2020 where it can flare up again. If that happens, then we'd know the disease is here to stay. :(

These 2 "new" cases are really nothing new to worry about, because they are directly related to the 50+ person that was infected earlier. In fact, I'd be more worried if we could not identify the 2 Wuhan relatives of this 50 y.o. person.
So essentially, they are just the same cluster of infections, instead of some other new source creeping up out of nowhere.
