Lol I don’t get these news reports and anchors trying to emphasize about singling out Chinese over corona and stigmaziting the Chinese because of it
It started in China, it was Chinese people eating bats that started it, it spread in China to the point we see it at today, and the Chinese govt. tried to cover it up and downplay the severity of it. It’s very much a “Chinese” thing lol

This is the case where "politically correct" has actual use and is not a punchline. It's not politically correct to name a virus after people or a place (or animals). WHO stopped doing it after MERS.
It was colloquially called Wuhan Coronavirus at first for obvious reasons, but media now calls it by its proper politically correct name, 2019 New (or Novel) Coronavirus or 2019 nCoV
If someone still calls it "Wuhan Virus" or whatever, and aren't in the press, I don't think that's a problem. Maybe don't do it though. Regardless of if you think someone is a "snowflake" for bringing it up, why not just be sensitive to people? It makes the world a better place overall. Press needs to be professional though, and should not call it by its colloquial name.
I don't think it's a "huge deal" and I don't think normal people are making a "huge deal" out of it. There is definitely some anti-US propaganda going around China, complaining that H1N1 outbreak wasn't called "American Virus" (it actually started in Mexico btw). Absolutely people were calling it "American Swine Flu" around the world and "Swine Flu" in America and elsewhere. It's such a dumb argument to use though, fighting xenophobia with your own xenophobia FailFish
Anyway my thought is, if people are saying they don't like it when you call something that, why not just call it something else? Does it hurt to do that? Who is actually the snowflake?

it's a tabloid-format print, they're not gonna put 2019-nCoV in bold letters front page
the formal nomenclature itself isn't even finalized because it's still so new
the fact that it's even debated just puts everything into perspective

I see some places simply calling it "Coronavirus" which at this time everyone knows what it means, despite it being technically inaccurate.
HKFP dropped "Wuhan" from the name after one complaint on twitter. So while they don't call it by its official name (which is not at all reader or SEO friendly) they did accommodate the naming convention.
I think it's good to debate stuff like this. Let's get better at considering the feelings of others!

Apparently Dr. Li is still alive, barely. They reportedly have restarted his heart and have him on ECMO (artificial lung)
Fucking tragic if this man dies.
What is the source on this. Chinese social media is exploding over this. The internet police is on overtime right now.
People are starting to realize the what happened when their rights on infringe on by a government that is always “right”

Wuhan police “letter of reprimand” to Li Wenliang: translation and analysis (https://thechinacollection.org/wuhan-police-letter-reprimand-li-wenliang-translation-analysis/)
This is an odd document for a couple of reasons — so much so that I first wondered if it might be fake, but I then discovered that Li had presented the document himself to Caixin. But look at the language: instead of the usual formal style of official documents, we have exclamation marks in what reads more like a transcript of a police officer barking at a suspect: “听明白了吗? Have you got that?” The document is suffused with the language of offended Authority scolding a wayward and insufficiently obedient subject.

My gym now checks your temperature before letting you in... Good thing I passed EleGiggle
Saw a huge line of old people outside a Circle K. Turns out they gave away 10,000 masks to people over 65. Only one each, but people still lined up. Many are using them for several days, even though really you shouldn't use one for more than a couple hours.
They have been producing them at the prison 24 hours a day for a while now, I wonder where they are ending up? Certainly not in HK citizens' hands.

Also friend bought a bunch of mask and he ask me to hand them out for free instead of donating them, he doesn’t want ppl buying used mask or buying over price masks

I only have less than one box of masks sharing with 7 people at home...only one person can go out and buy food and the mask has to be reused at least 1-2 days. It has been like this for 2 weeks or so.

You mean high population density, poor controls and limits on animal-human interaction and wet markets are not breeding grounds for virus's that could wipe out humanity? This won't be the last disease coming out of china....

If they had done that, someone would be posting an article saying "China ignores company's copyright and steals their work to create and sell counterfeit drugs"
Can't win man. Also I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of the copyright application in this case... I don't believe there's any intention to make money off their own citizens in this case.
That is partly true
but after the emergency situation, will the institute hand the patent over to Gilead in China?
What i can see is, there will be two version of Remdesivir from different region and it's just going to be a chaos like other trademark issues (Best example is New Balance).

How much are the N95 masks selling for nowadays? Theres actually better, possibly cheaper alternatives out there that I would use over theses masks especially over in China/HK

they were selling for 5.99 at crappy tire on cambie and broadway today. Do have to check which n95 it is.
Regular dusk mask at 4.99.
If this ever happened in USA, they would never name this as Seattle/ new york/ texas virus.

Not sure about N95, but regular masks are about 10X normal price.
A friend gathered orders for a bunch of people, and ordered tons of masks online in Japan right when this started, so we were able to get them for normal price. I ordered some extras in case I needed to give some out. We'll have to go get them once they make it to Hong Kong - we're not going to trust a freight forwarder so we'll pick it up ourselves (and be very careful, I can see someone trying to rob us if they are desperate enough)
You don't need N95 anyway; you just need to keep peoples' cough juice out of your face if you come across someone coughing.
Keeping hands clean is the most important

Staying at home is much safer than walking around, I will wait until the mask supplies are more stable and more reasonable priced. A rioter friend gave me a 3M tear gas mask with a dozen of N95 filters just in case someone in the family needs to go to hospital.
It is unknown who is infected around you. Better stay indoor.

If i was in china i would be using a 3M Respirator than the N95 masks like this
https://www.forestry-suppliers.com/Images/Original/7558_23259_p1.jpg
I use this respirator for work and it forms a perfect seal around your face so u wont be breathing in anything airborne through your mouth and nose and also with the Pink P100 Filter, itll last 30 days/40hrs of use compared to the single use N95. Which imo are only useful for u to stop touching yourself in the face. In canada you can find the lower model respirator for like $25 with filter, ive seen them on Ali for as low as $20. Seems to be cheaper yet better alternative. Its something to think about if you dont wanna catch the disease and possibly die.

yeah, I bought a 3M 6200 + a bunch of N95 (5n11) filters just in case. P100 (62923 / 62926) is for tear gas and people who are in the medical camp.
beside respirators, you should get eye wear and something can protect your ears. Never thought of buying one of these in the past 30 years, now it is different.

I got this too with the p100 filters. Although I think it'll work, I think there's a right tool for the job behind the thinking. Otherwise why don't doctors wear n99 or p100 but they wear n95? It's because n95 will work. N99 probably for NASA scientists working with radioactive particles, while p100 is probably more geared towards automotive sector where there are many oil, carcinogens, respiratory irritants in the air.

Since my hobby is doing random projects and painting, I've already owned one of these masks. They are so good... you can be spraying paint for half an hour and not smell anything, then once you take the mask off, then you realized just how bad the whole place smells with paint fumes. lol
It seems like Canadian Tire has recently received a new shipment. They have a lot of masks for sale now.

So now there's 3 confirmed new cases and 7 more suspected cases. The place hosting has shut down, and all employees are on 2 week quarantine.
Be careful out there. Don't freak out, but be careful. Hot pot is a bad idea right now.

Just like to hear different perspective on this, for those living in Hong Kong right now, how did you evaluate the risk of catching the virus between staying in Hong Kong, vs flying out (ie back to Vancouver/Canada)?
I have family living in HK, and when I’m looking at precautions set out by WHO/VCH, important precautions are avoid crowd and hand washing. Hence I’m a strong believer that there’s a lower risk of catching the virus if you stay put (in HK specifically) than if you fly out. However I have friends who thinks it’s safer in Vancouver than HK, which is true, but aren’t you putting yourself at a higher risk when you’re flying out?
Just wanr to hear what others perspective are, and if I missed anything or there’s a flaw in my thinking.

First of all, someone called your bluff, you lost by a fooking landslide. All your blown up numbers; at the end collasped. You LOST hard.
I DO RESPECT you (chairwoman Winnie Yu Wai-ming) for standing UP and accepting the defeat.
TL;DR. HK medical workers no strike due to 2,000 votes short of the target. Only 30% agreed to strike.

Mask is pretty much all sold out. You might be lucky to get a box or two at regular price if you happen to be at the store that just got stock. All the anti-bacterial wet wipes sold out as well. There are still some anti-bacterial wipes out there but they are not safe on skin(only use for cleaning). Rubbing Alohcol is being bought up as well. Lot's of place were out of stock earlier but I think they have some now. Wife and I bought a bottle at London Drugs but you have to get it at customer service. I am guessing they do this to prevent people from buying all the stocks.
Next thing that is going to be sold out pretty quick is anti-bacterial soap. You can still find them at London drugs but I suspect as soon as the Chinese community figure this out it will be gone (BTW the brand is call safeguard). You can still buy mask online but price is like 7x higher than normal.
Wife and I order 5 boxes of N95 mask like a month again online. Still haven't receive them yet. Status is saying seller is preparing them. We kinda of need it coz the plan was to travel back to China in March. But we are most likely to reschedule it to End of April or May. Ticket is purchased though Air Canada and since they suspend flight till end of Feb if we were to reschedule we have to pay out of our pickets so we are waiting right now. We also bought 10 packs of Wet wipes to use in China and a bunch of travel size Purell to bring with us.
The Gov is too scare to do anything in case people call them racist or if they put any policy that target a specific group. My niece goes to pre school now and there are a lot Chinese that comes back after holidays. School refuse to force these kids to go to school due to the fact health officals refuse to issue statements advising people returning from China needs to self quarantine for 14 days.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
40K infected, 910 deaths, 3000 recovered. Official numbers - models show actual numbers may be 10-20X this. 100K should be assumed, but it's possibly 400K to 1 million so far, the vast majority of these in Wuhan and other locked down cities. Remember Wuhan itself had a population of 11 million.
Older people and those with existing conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) are more vulnerable to serious illness. In healthy people, it seems to be a reall bad flu deep in the respiratory system - so not really a sore throat or cough, but inflamed and saturated lungs.
But we haven't really gotten many reports on death statistics outside the initial wave - the first 17 deaths had a median age of 75, that's all we know for sure. The guy who died in Philippines was 44, the one who died in Hong Kong was 39 IIRC (reports say he had a pre-existing condition, but I never saw what that condition was)

Just thought I'd spill some thoughts out here as I watch some XFL
BTW you don't need anti-bacterial soap - regular soap will clear your hands of the gunk that the virus lives within. Same goes for those hand wipes.
The thing to keep in mind is, the virus doesn't exist outside its environment of human goop. Either mucous, spit, snot, or poop. You don't need to "kill the virus" with soap, you just need to clean the crap that the virus resides in while on your hands.
Keep your hands clean, keep your hands off your face when they're not clean.
If you live in a condo, get to your strata and put together a plan to clean door handles and elevator buttons on the hour.
Gloves are a good idea, maybe even more important than masks. Masks are overrated, but as I said before, it's paradoxically a good thing they are overrated. I just wish the govt would distribute to people in need who are most at risk. We gave all our pre-wrapped masks to homeless people we came across yesterday throughout TST and Jordan. Govt isn't watching out for people, so we need to watch out for each other.
Change your hand towels or whatever you use to dry your hands after washing them, like every day or every other day. Some people leave these up for way too long, and now is not a good time for that
So far 99% of the infections have come from not one country, but practically one city. It's not "racist" to keep people from that city contained. If your niece goes to a school where there's a chance someone else went to that city or near it, absolutely don't go there for at least a couple weeks!
That 99% is not going to last forever. Already people are getting sick with no travel or known contact with anyone from Hubei or even China. WHO says this is very worrying, and could be "the tip of the iceberg (https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1507658-20200210.htm)" for local transmission.
In other words, despite all the lockdowns and flight cancellations and border controls, the virus was NOT contained.
The excuse of being "racist" no longer exists.
The goal now is for each country to manage and contain the outbreak as it makes its way around the world. Good luck!

If anyone would love to share their insight, I'd be grateful to hear them.

Here's some more info on what they're spraying (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-7961361/Chinese-government-spray-disinfectant-entire-CITY-tonight.html) It's not "mind control" or "chemtrailing the streets" and I don' think it's "a sign that this is a manmade bioweapon" as some of that guys other followers seem to think.
I think they spray it each night after curfew, to clean off surfaces that accumulated during the hours that people are allowed to go out.
It's an extreme measure, but this is an extreme circumstance.
BTW this is the damage that occurs when misleading information like "the flu is actually worse" proliferates, and part of why I keep posting here to the people who are exposed to that kind of info.

I'm hearing that the virus may be transferable through aerosol. Meaning it can travel quite long distances. Not just droplets and direct contact. Could be another reason for the spraying.
Ps, I don't actually have a Twitter account. Was shared on a video discussing the virus.

They are referring to a report from Shanghai (https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3049623/coronavirus-hubei-province-reports-81-new-deaths-and-2841) that the virus is airborne through aerosol, which the China CDC was quick to debunk (http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2020-02/09/c_138768432.htm)
Here is their report (http://www.nhc.gov.cn/jkj/s7915/202001/bc661e49b5bc487dba182f5c49ac445b.shtml) which states that it can be aerosolized in specific settings - namely clinical settings (such as inserting a tracheal tube)

So who do you believe then?
I believe the idea behind not closing the border is that if the border is closed, some people will still find ways to sneak in and that's a lot harder to keep track of. With open borders, you could much better track who has been to China recently and quarantine as needed.
Now I am not saying I support or am against it, I am just stating the rationale behind the suggestion.
And who else's number would they publish? I know China's reported numbers are definitely not accurate, but at the same time this is probably the most credible source as far as WHO is concerned since it's still the official numbers reported by the legallt governing body.

It's an unfortunate cycle really.
Chinese gov't has a long history of understating/manipulating data to save face; to a point where some of their critical datas (such as GDP and what not) are taken as reference only and foreign entities who need the true data do estimations via their own methods to achieve a more objective view of real data.
This, in the event of a medical crisis is bad. When the gov't data has no credibility, FUDs fly too easily and CCP has to censor them. And while censoring some FUDs, they also censor some real data, making the gov't data unreliable. And the cycle continues.
They are getting a taste of their own poison... that's why there's a surge now in China asking for freedom of speech... which is part of their constitution... but we all know that's not gonna fly.

I think when it comes to something political, WHO will try as hard as they can to accommodate China, because if they don't, they know they'll just get kicked out of the country then we REALLY don't know what's going on.
If it's something like viral mutations, studies on transmission, etc, I think they are the most credible source within China. If it's proven to be spread via aerosol, they'd let us know. Unlike something like "the real death toll", I don't think there's any reason for them not to.

Over 1000 deaths now.
Just now from CNN:
The Hubei health authority reported that 103 more people died of the coronavirus in Hubei province on Monday, raising the death toll in the epidemic's epicenter to 974.
This brings the total number of deaths in mainland China to at least 1,011. Globally, a total of 1,013 people have died, including one death in Hong Kong and one in the Philippines.
Hubei authorities confirmed an additional 2,097 cases of the virus in Hubei on Monday, which brings the total number of cases in the region to 31,728.
More than 25,000 patients have been hospitalized in Hubei, including 1,298 who are in critical condition, according to the health authority. More than two thousand patients have been cured and discharged.
The global number of confirmed coronavirus cases now exceeds 42,500. The vast majority of cases remains in mainland China.

Imagine "if" the virus is mutating. Worse case would be the type where it lays dormant after first affecting (entering) the patient. It seems like it's been cured, but comes back multiple times. Each time more violent and more contagious. Somewhat like chicken pox and shingles. A vaccine is developed, but the virus develops immunity to the anti-virus.
I've been watching too many sci-fi movies. Spores. Like Alien: Covenant. Gas masks, unless you wear the kind that covers the entire head, don't cut it when the spores enter through ears. :troll:

No this is absolutely a concern. If it hits enough people, and it's hitting a LOT, it's going to start mutating. Much like how we have a different influenza every year.
Someone asked if HK Canadians are considering moving back. If this becomes a seasonal "flu" coming from China every year, that's when I'd consider leaving.
For now, this is my home, and I just deal with it.

Still corona virus, although not specific enough, will be easier to recognize by commoners.

Spanish Flu was named over a hundred years ago when people were dumb and racist as fuck. In fact it started in the battlefields of WWI in France and it was named "Spanish Flu" because the Spanish media was not censored at the time, leading people to believe there were a ton of cases in Spain.
MERS was named after a geographical area. It would be much worse if it was called "Chinese Virus" but perhaps it's due to the negative connotations associated with China *blank* being used as a slur. Sorta how "Chinaman" is racist but not "Irishman" or "Frenchman"
Everyone’s allowed to complain. Us whites fucking hate the bus ads with only mandarin and no English so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
First of all, it's written Chinese, no need to qualify it as Mandarin as other dialect speakers can read it as well. Second, why would you care? The ad obviously isn't for you or me. I can't read Chinese either and it doesn't piss me off. In fact I'm glad for it, one less ad invading my headspace as far as I'm concerned.

No reason to keep repeating this misinformation:

But here's the thing, per Foreign Policy: That video in question reportedly wasn't filmed in Wuhan or China in general—the woman in the video, who news outlets have identified as Wang Mengyun, is a host of an online travel show who was actually eating a dish in Palau, an island country located in the western Pacific ocean. The video was also reportedly filmed in 2016—well before the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan. Mengyun has also reportedly apologized for the footage. "I am sorry everyone. I should not have eaten a bat," she said, according to the South China Morning Post. “[I] had no idea during filming that there was such a virus,” she continued. “I realized it only recently.”
It is pretty apparent though that this outbreak has been racialized much more than other recent ones including SARS(China), MERS (Saudi, Korea), H1N1(Mexico). Perhaps because of the size and drastic measures being taken have made it a huge news story. Again, calling it "China VIrus" is not racist in itself, but the intent is there to perhaps rile up some of the more unenlightened idiots out there.
But here's some bedtime reading for ya'll:

Agree with everything you said, and yeah that idiot eating the bat was mostly perfect timing, but the "COVID-19" genome is 96% similar to a bat coronavirus (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2012-7), so it almost definitely came from a bat. It would have had to go through another species first though, and right now they are suspecting it was the pangolin, since they found a coronavirus on them that is 99% similar (http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2020-02/07/c_138763566.htm) to "COVID-19"
Calling it "China Virus" is absolutely racist - it was never called that to begin with, but racists are using the name now. In case anyone was curious, the Hong Kong subreddit is absolutely ruined now, filled with anti-China racists from all over the world, mostly Australia and USA. They insist on calling it things like "China Virus" and "WARS" and the sub is filled with racist propaganda. Their live thread is still useful, but the subreddit itself is a lost cause.

Given the fragile state of our economy right now, I'd be more concerned with the financial fallout of this virus.
The 14 regions that were shutdown earlier this month make up 69% of China's gdp. The ccp has been injecting hundreds of billions of dollars into the economy to ease the bleeding.
Considering how interconnected the global economy is, and the increasing trend of infections, this virus is likely to impact the economy quite severely in the coming days.

I see that all the time. But there also needs to be a standard for public washrooms.. A lot of washrooms are now installing hand dryers and cutting down on paper use - which is good (a whole other issue regarding the cleanliness of those machines...). But they don't have sensors on their faucets, and they still have a twist knob or pull handle on their doors. So after your hands are dry you still have to touch these contaminated surfaces again before leaving the washroom - totally defeating the purpose of hand washing.
To be honest all public washrooms should be installing these:

I've been saying that since the beginning! I don't think "the west" is suppressing information, but they definitely aren't taking it seriously enough. Information from China is hard to get, because everyone who is covering it from a non government perspective is being disappeared.
And to make it clear again - I'm not saying everyone should freak out. But DO take it seriously. This is NOT "basically the flu". All those comparisons to the flu based on symptoms and overall numbers are doing so much harm.
Even Singapore is fucking themselves over, with the govt constantly telling people not to wear masks unless they're already sick. We saw that American lady who is quarantined in Japan. She literally didn't have ANY symptoms, and was tested by chance and tested positive. She could have been spreading it all over the place without even knowing she had it. It's no surprise that Singapore has more infections than HK, despite HK being right on the border with 20K mainlanders coming in daily until they closed the border
If you don't have masks, hand wash, bleach, rubbing alcohol (and maybe gloves) go get some now. Don't use it yet, but have it on hand. Because if an outbreak occurs in Vancouver, people are going to go INSANE and you won't be able to get it.

Yeah that's definitely not taking things seriously enough. NO
This is probably the same for all Canadian airports and major Canadian ones that take flights in from China/HK. The government is not enforcing more strict rules.
Is this the same at Toronto?

I think it's ridiculous that at yvr ppl flying in from China can queue up with all arrivals to pass through immigration, and then they're not tested, they're just asked if theyre good
Won't most people say they are good?

I have said it pages back. There are literally no mask left. All sold out in Van. You can still find some mask but they are for dust (saw some at wal mart earlier today). Places like London drugs do have stocks coming in weekly but you have 20+ Chinese lining up 30+ mins before the store even opens so good luck trying to get them. Rubbing alcohol was out of stock but there seem to be some now but most stores are limiting the number of bottles you can purchase. wet ones antibacterial hand wipes you can still buy them (the travel size is harder to come by but the rolls ones you can find them easily), Lysol Disinfecting wipes aren't running out (coz you can use them on your skin). hand sanitizer are pretty much sold out. You can still find them online but they are overpriced.
Regarding wearing mask in Van. I don't think that's really needed yet. Today while at shoppers saw this poor Chinese student being talk down on by this white dude for wearing a mask, spreading her disease around and just being racist towards her. Also saw a Chines student wearing a mask, surgery gloves and sunglasses on the other day. I mean sure wear a mask but don't wear those plastic gloves, if you really want maybe wear a thin pair of leather gloves at least you won't stand out so much.

This exactly. Good luck getting masks.
Their effectiveness is questionable as well given how most people(that are not medical professionals) don't use them properly anyway. May as well reserve them for people who truly need them.
The mask is actually more effective at being a social statement than it prevents the virus. On top of the facts that I can't feasibly purchase one and it's effectiveness is questionable unless you have boxes of them and switch often, I wouldn't want to be a stick in the mud.
Keep calm, keep your hands clean, practice basic hygiene etiquettes, and you will be just fine.

I stated this in a previous post
The P100 filters out 99.97% of particulates in the air, they are also Oil Proof and they last 30 days/40hrs of use
The N95 filters out 95% of particulates in the air, are not Oil Proof and are only meant for single use.
N - Not oil resistant
R - Resistant to oil
P - Oil Proof
95 - Removes 95% of all particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
99 - Removes 99% of particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
100 - Removes 99.97% of all particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter or larger. HE or HEPA quality filter.

Small, privately owned hardware stores, some home hardware stores (the little ones, Jim Home Hardware) has them. Atleast in the area I was in while searching for some quick setting mortar. Lol. Any of the chains have too good of inventory. Haha.

I've definitely noticed the amount of people in Richmond centre decline (most obvious in the food court). Today being Saturday, Aberdeen is usually real busy too but the numbers have dropped there as well.
It's pretty funny to see people (mostly younger people) wearing n95 masks improperly. You might as well wear nothing because it ain't doing shit for you. For the most part, people are only wearing masks to make themselves feel better about the situation which is low risk around here anyways.

Looks like plasma transfusions from recovered hosts can reduce the effects in critical patients.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-14/china-seeks-plasma-from-recovered-patients-for-coronavirus-cure
China’s state-owned medical products maker is collecting plasma from the blood of people who have recovered from the novel coronavirus after discovering it helped critically ill patients.
China National Biotec Group Co. has been using this plasma, which contains highly potent antibodies, to treat more than 10 seriously ill patients since Feb. 8, the company said in an statement on its official WeChat account Thursday night. It claimed that those receiving the treatment improved within 24 hours, with reduced inflammation and viral loads along with better oxygen levels in the blood.
Drugmakers and the Chinese authorities are racing to develop a cure for the contagion that has so far killed more than 1,300 people, infected over 63,000 and has no approved treatment or vaccine. China has also unleashed a flurry of clinical trials -- as many as 77 have been registered -- in a bid to curb the outbreak that’s threatening its economic growth.

as mentioned before, you are put in the risk of the courier stealing the n95 than you shipping them. Obviously if you ship the entire original box is even more tempting.
Again, if you mail it in a brown box, there is no legal written binding law stating there are no export of mask out of Canada.
Commercial and industrial mask (dentist, private practices, health care, test labs, universities) are still being shipped in and out of Canada on a daily basis.

Quarantine method has been stepped up, as people have been bailing on their quarantines. They used to do phone calls to confirm location ("are you where you're supposed to be?" "yup, I promise Kappa ")
But now you have to use tracking software (I think Whatsapp or Wechat) or wear an ankle bracelet.
I will say that all of Hong Kong should be thanking the protesters for killing the tourism industry before this virus broke out. If the tourism wasn't severely depressed going into this year's CNY travel, we would have been soooooooooo fucked.
This year, before any border controls, Lo Wu would saw around 78K travelers (including HK and non HK residents, and this includes both directions). SZ Bay: 43K Lok Ma Chau: 36K
Last year these numbers were 242K, 141K and 132K (https://www.immd.gov.hk/eng/press/press-releases/20190128.html)
So before any border controls, we were at 150K from 515K, and are now at 3K daily travelers. I wish I could find the numbers for mainland visitors only, I bet it's even more significant.
Either way, protesters are saving HK in more than a few ways. SeemsGood

Since February 8, Hong Kong residents who return home from the mainland have been required to quarantine themselves at home for 14 days, or face a six-month jail term and HK$25,000 fine.
Non-residents have to stay in their hotels, other pre-arranged accomodations, or be kept in a quarantine camp.
The new measure is aimed at making sure they obey the quarantine.
So how about people who come from the mainland to Canada? They are just asked "Are you good?" and then they can roam free? Or they are just encouraged to self isolate themselves at home for at least 14 days without meeting other people?

Yup that's mostly what it is. Stupid and selfish people are panicking and taking WAY more than they need, not only ruining it for literally the entire country, but they're going to end up being stuck with tons of useless TP once mold sets in over summer time.
Update: I got some TP! They would bring out boxes of new stock, and people would grab it as soon as the boxes were opened. There's no choice what brand you get, unless you want to wait and see what the next box is going to be. If you want a specific (usually cheaper) brand, you have to wait and hope to win some fights over others looking for that brand.
Rice was easier, but again only one brand. Thai long grain rice that I usually don't buy but it'll have to do for now.
Goods from China are definitely coming in slower than usual, but thankfully there's enough supply from other countries. It's not even always more expensive either. One of the biggest concerns (for me at least) is with a complete border shutdown, we'd be relying 100% on imports from countries other than China. That was also (allegedly) a concern when debating the handover.

I don't understand why people are fighting over rice. When was the last time you ever went and bought rice from China????? Most of hte time it's Thailand and Australia, so there won't be any demand / supply shortage.
The reason for China TP was due to "factory going to shut down operation" and people went ape shit. There is one justification, at least in Hong Kong, you aren't able to put "premium Italian made" toilet paper, so people THINK all TP are from China.
Do you know HOW long it'll take to use up 1 roll of toilet paper, let along the entire 12 roll in a pack? In Canada or US, sure you have space, but this is a 250-500 sq ft apartment... WTF do you have space to store....

You might not understand a lot of stuff in Hong Kong. When 99% of the Hongers think it is choas, 1 or 2 C-lai would suddenly go crazy and go buy all the rice at the supermarket. Thanks to the govn't is doing nothing to prevent or educate the public in advance.
When I see the TP rack in supermarket is empty for 1 week, even a normal Honger would buy 2-3x more than normal and demand continues.
I wore my 3M 6200 mask to supermarket once when my mask ran out. Better to play safe than getting killed (and the family members too)

It might just be partially in the nature of the culture; I've seen it happen a million times. T10 typhoon incoming? Better hope you have rice at home, because shelves will be empty. Fukushima blows up? Somehow people thought eating lots of non-iodized salt would help, so no salt on shelves for a week. Even when the protests started, people panicked and started stocking up. I guess they thought there was a chance China would come in with tanks and lock everyone in their homes.
Actually I can't really remember what it was like during SARS though. To my recollection it wasn't that bad. A lot of people wore masks, but NOTHING like today. So maybe the panic thing is a more recent thing, as people learn that their government is absolutely useless. All they do is protect the CCP and the Police.
I didn't ever wear a mask during SARS, and I hung out at Amoy all the time (bad idea in retrospect). One day I was there, and all the stores were closed and dudes in full body suits were wandering around... I guess that was the day they discovered the cause :heckno:

By March 1 it's possible a lot more stuff is going to be closed. People in Japan are furious at their government for not taking this seriously enough, so they may take action with border control as well as closing public run events, while corporations do the same.
