he says that to trivialize people's comments. fact of the matter is, orange7 was making a valid point (for once) and he immediately started being an asshole about it. tegra do you seriously think you don't deserve fails for that? all you fucking do is troll in this thread. and your threat (from your flames thread) was childish and retarded. you troll this thread every chance you get and you expected no one to troll your own thread? yeah that totally makes sense.
I admit that was a troll, but i cant troll on orange7 once and a while?!
but the rest of the comments are valid...and i would never take them back :thumbsup:

Backhand shots are deadly....goalie doesn't know which direction the puck is going to go....
I was very fortunate to have a coach when I was 10 who was the Blazers play by play guy on the radio. He managed to get a number of the Blazers to come to our practices and one of my favourite memories was having Darcy Tucker show me how to really raise the puck up on the backhand right in tight with the goalie down.

lucky dude! when i played, our coach got iggy to come our practices and help our whole team with skating drills and shooting for a few practices.
i remember those lucky games we got to play at riverside collosium when i was younger...normally we would be out at memorial arena, the one at macarthur park, or the valleyview one. So, when we got occasional games at practices at riverside, we were all stoked!

one of my coach's was Shane Kuss who played for the Surrey Eagles with Gomez anh was a harsh cool guy. Playing scrimmage was awesome with him and I liked owning his ass lol
I didn't have any players come to my practice but when I was at the super series and tons of other places where were always players around.

I've played with a few NHLers, no one like Gomez or Iginla, but its pretty cool to see guys make it. Voros, Fraser, and a couple guys who got drafted, paid and played a shift here and there.
I guess my best memory was against Scott Hannan. He was my brothers d partner for years. I scrimmaged with them once, burned him pretty good and scored. Not sure if that's why he used to kick my ass so bad (went to highschool with him too). Posted via RS Mobile (http://www.revscene.net/foru

yeah once I got over the awe of playing on the Blazer's ice, Riverside wasn't my favourite rink to play in because of how warm it was. Memorial was good but the old Blazer's dressing room stunk.

Nooooooooooooo!
Tom Larscheid is retiring from broadcasting! :cry::cry::cry:
http://www.vancouversun.com/Larscheid+leaving+Canucks+broadcast+booth/3335049/story.html
Tom Larscheid had his ace on Wednesday. Vancouver Canuck hockey fans had their ace for most of the last 33 years.
It is the end of an era for the National Hockey League club and broadcasting in Vancouver as the Team 1040 is replacing Larscheid with analyst Dave Tomlinson on its radio broadcasts next season.
An under-sized running back from California who moved to Vancouver to play football in 1962 and never left, Larscheid's remarkable reign over the airwaves here is unlikely to be repeated either in duration or style.
He was the colour-man on Vancouver hockey broadcasts for all but four NHL seasons since 1977, and for more than a generation of hockey fans Larscheid's insight and instincts provided a blunt barometer of the team's performance – good or bad.
“When you have a job you've loved each and every day, you're sorry to give it up,” Larscheid said late Wednesday. “But the simple reality is I'm 70 years old and it's time to pass the baton. It will be strange not to be up there in my perch during hockey season, but I've had a pretty good run.
“I'm grateful to the listeners and honoured to have worked with three of the very best play-by-play men in the business in Jim Robson, Jim Hughson and John Shorthouse. And Rick Ball is going to be right up there, too. I always called it the way I saw it and I had a lot of fun doing it. My only regret is I never got to say: 'The Vancouver Canucks are Stanley Cup champions.'”
Larscheid said 1040 has been terrific to him and he leaves with no hard feelings after the station told him recently it was going with Tomlinson, a 41-year-old from North Vancouver who was a kid when Larscheid and Robson were often better than the hockey team they broadcast.
Tomlinson has been filling in for Larscheid and working other assignments for 1040 after completing a 15-season playing career in hockey.
Larscheid got a head start on his retirement Wednesday when he had a hole-in-one playing golf with Shorthouse.
He looks forward to a lot more golf and time with his wife, Lesley.
At the radio station's invitation, Larscheid will work one final game with Shorthouse, the Oct. 9 season-opener against Los Angeles that starts the Canucks' 40th anniversary season. The hockey team will go the next 40 years without Larscheid.
Even more reason to go to the home opener now.

despite being a leaf fan Linden and Bure were some of my favourite players and even had posters of them on my walls. for the first few years I went with #16 in hockey because of Linden and Hull but I had to switch to #8. the jerseys got smaller as the numbers got bigger and this small kid looked goofy with his large on and mine was a little snug. I stuck with #8 for Mark Recchi after that.

On the subject of play-by-play...
I feel really sorry for those of you who never had the chance to listen to Jim Robson call play-by-play. I'm not saying this because I'm getting nostalgic about '94; he was really that good. His voice was pitch-perfect (deep enough, but also capable of getting you excited) and back in the days when radio was often the only option, he was really able to paint of picture of what was going on.
John Shorthouse is decent, but I feel that his calling has regressed since he's made the move to TV. Gord Miller is terrible, Mark Lee should have stuck to football, and Cuthbert's voice can sometimes get annoying. Hughson is enthusiastic, but he is a little too "Hollywood" for my liking. Bob Cole was actually pretty good up until the late 90s, but clearly, he can no longer follow the play or read any names.

Back in the 90's, only a handful of canuck games were televised and there was no such thing as pay per view, it was either goto the game live or listen on the radio.
Jim Robson and Tom Larscheid really did captivate the audience, Robson always painted the perfect picture and Tommy always told it how it is. Yes, he was a bit too homerish, but no one doubted his love for the nucks.
Who would of thunk, kids, teenagers, adults, listening to Radio? Well I personally thank Robson and Larscheid for that wonderful experience.
One of the great calls by Robson, there's also a great clip of Larsheid, but can't find it where after Bure's goal, he jumps up and screams, "this is the best moment in canucks history"

Correction fella's, the Ducks were up 3-1 when Kariya got nailed, and they won the game 5-2. Maybe it changed that particular game, but Giguere was the reason it went to 7 games, and the reason the Ducks made it there. He was the franchise player there for a while, but after lying to Ducks fans like me, I'm glad he never won the cup.

It's normal as some hits sometimes knocks the wind out of you. It looks worse than it really is. When you can't breath, you can't move but you're stunned only momentarily.
Happened to me lots of times; in hockey and otherwise.

It doesn't really matter who Chicago has in net as long as the core of their team remains the same. The Red Wings had pretty much the same team for their 3 Stanley Cup wins in 1997, 1998 and 2002. Not to mention they won with a different starting goaltender for each Championship.

So u think Chicago would of won the cup if they had Jimmy Howard in net? or Carey Price? Niemi played really well for Chicago and got hot at the right time for them. People say its the core that makes a team win a stanley cup, but i think it takes every1 to do it. The Byfugliens, Bollands, and Ladds that are always overshadowed by the Toews and Kanes but they play a huge part in there cup win.
Red Wings are different, they were simply just too good of a team, and they were able to win championships with mediocre goaltending

Your core group doesn't consist of just star players. It's the players you build your team around. Other than Yzerman, Shanny, Fedorov, and Lidstrom they still kept the same grinders like McCarty, Draper and Maltby for all 3 Championships. It didn't matter who filled their 2nd and 3rd lines.
And I'm not sure what you mean by mediocre goaltending. Mike Vernon, Chris Osgood and Dominik Hasek were all above average to all star goaltenders.

I'm 50/50 on the Halak/Niemi non-signing by Montreal and Chicago.
On one hand, how can you let them go after such steller performances in the playoffs?
On the other hand, it was smart because most goalies in the league these days are one-shot wonders. Either they are good for a few years then suck and then maybe good again for a few more and then suck, or they have one-shot deals. It's rare to have a always-steady goaltender like Brodeur. Once you find one like that, you better keep him no matter what! Lets hope Luongo is who we hope he is...

Assistant Coach Ryan Walters has been fired by the Canucks...Replaced by Newell Brown
Not really racist!
08-03-2010, 11:07 AM
The Vancouver Canucks have replaced assistant coach Ryan Walter with Newell Brown from the Anaheim Ducks organization.
Brown, 48, has been with the Ducks for the past five years, He has also held NHL coaching positions in Columbus and Chicago, and was a head coach in both the AHL and NCAA.
“Newell brings a tremendous amount of NHL experience and success to our team as an assistant coach, including a Stanley Cup championship," Canucks president and general manager Mike Gillis said in a news release. “We believe his skill set complements our coaching staff and will help further develop our players; ultimately making this team more competitive.”
The Canucks have re-signed incumbent assistants Rick Bowness and Darryl Williams. In June, they brought in Roland Melanson as goaltending coach.
The Canucks did not give reasons for letting Walter go, nor did they give any indication of his future plans.
Brown was a Canucks draft pick (158th overall) in 1982.

A little off-topic, but here's a great article on the first Asian player to ever play in the NHL - Larry Kwong.
A hockey trailblazer emerges from obscurity
Tom Hawthorn
Victoria — From Thursday's Globe and Mail
Published on Tuesday, Aug. 03, 2010 7:14PM EDT
Last updated on Tuesday, Aug. 03, 2010 7:27PM EDT
After he retired from hockey, Larry Kwong raised a family and built a business in Calgary.
He rarely spoke about his exploits on the ice, in part because few ever asked. He had played but a single game in the National Hockey League, his turn on the ice so brief as to seem more a dream with each passing year.
He did not make a fuss over being ignored.
Time passed. His children grew up, had children of their own. He mourned one wife, then a second, the seeming blessing of a long life cursed by the loss of those he loved.
A fine athlete who played professional hockey for 12 seasons in four countries and later became a tennis instructor, he came to be betrayed by his own body.
Diabetes claimed his left leg. A year later, he lost his right. An athlete whose dipsy-doodles on the ice once caused grief for defencemen and goaltenders now wore artificial legs, needing crutches, or a wheelchair, to move from room to room in his own apartment.
He once confessed to me a wish to be done with the rigours of living. He did not seriously contemplate the end, though, as he felt a duty to his family, especially his grandchildren, to be a part of their lives.
Mr. Kwong is 87 now, slowed by damnable infirmity, but still sharp of mind and blessed with a dry sense of humour. He has needed it.
Chad Soon, a 38-year-old elementary-school teacher in Vernon, is campaigning to gain for the old player long-overdue recognition. Mr. Kwong broke the colour barrier in the NHL as the first player of Asian descent to skate in the league.
Why do so few know his story?
“Here’s a guy raised not to speak out. Not to draw attention to himself. To be seen and not be heard. Sort of the traditional Chinese upbringing,” Mr. Soon said.
Mr. Soon, a third-generation Canadian whose Chinese side of the family has been in this country longer than his British side, first learned of Mr. Kwong from his grandfather, a contemporary who had followed the exploits of a player known as the China Clipper.
When moving cross-Canada to take a job in Mr. Kwong’s hometown, Mr. Soon made a pilgrimage to the player’s home, where he heard his life story and examined his hockey memorabilia. It was a moment never to be forgotten.
“People have never heard of him,” he said. “Such a compelling story. So deserving of recognition. I became determined to do what I could to get him some attention.”
Mr. Kwong was the 14th of 15 children born to an immigrant grocer with the venerable name Eng. The family became known as Kwong from their grocery store Kwong Hing Lung (Abundant Prosperity). He lost his father at age 5. Like so many boys, he spent cold winter evenings during the Depression listening to Foster Hewitt broadcast hockey games on the radio.
He played the game himself on borrowed skates with makeshift equipment on the frozen ponds of the Okanagan. From so humble a beginning, his great skill as a skater and sharpshooter earned him a spot with the Smoke Eaters in Trail, where he was barred from taking a well-paying job at the smelter like his teammates because of his ethnic heritage. Instead, he worked as a bellboy, a servile job. He played more senior hockey in Nanaimo and Vancouver before enlisting in the army during the Second World War. In 1946, at age 23, the fleet forward joined the New York Rovers, an amateur team that played at Madison Square Garden.
The Manhattan sportswriters called him King Kwong, a teasing nickname for a man who stood just 5-foot-6, weighed just 150 pounds.
He finally got a call-up by the parent New York Rangers for a game at the Montreal Forum. Near the end of the game, he was allowed on the ice for the briefest of shifts. His career was limited to a New York minute and he was never again to be given the opportunity.
After the snub, he signed with the Valleyfield Braves, where he was a top scorer and a most-valuable player in the senior Quebec league. He later played in England and Switzerland, where he also coached, before returning to Canada, where he built a grocery business in Calgary and lived in anonymity, his trailblazing forgotten, or ignored.
That anonymity is coming to a happy end.
Two years ago, Mr. Kwong and his daughter travelled to Vernon to speak to Mr. Soon’s Grades 5 and 6 class at Mission Hill Elementary. The walls of the classroom were lined by the pupils’ posters.
On the same visit, Mr. Kwong was pushed onto the ice before a Vernon Vipers junior hockey game to drop the puck for a ceremonial opening faceoff. Mr. Soon remembers the crowd offering polite applause until the public-address announcer introduced him as the first player from the Okanagan to play in the NHL. Mr. Kwong received a standing ovation lasting more than two minutes.
More recently, the province’s hockey establishment, as well as local politicians, gathered in Penticton for an induction dinner for the new members of the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame. A special pioneer award was presented to Mr. Kwong.
Afterwards, in a column for his constituents, Okanagan-Coquihalla MP Stockwell Day confessed he joined many in attendance in never having heard of the player.
“He had truly blazed the way and taken the hits so that my grandkids and yours will never have to face the painful barriers that kept him from every young kid’s dream,” Mr. Day wrote.
Many came by to pay tribute, including former Vancouver Canucks captain Trevor Linden.
Now, Mr. Soon is preparing a submission to be presented to the selection board of the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame.
As well, the irrepressible Todd Wong, who, as Toddish McWong, marries Robbie Burns Day with Chinese New Year in a celebration he calls Gung Haggis Fat Choy, is seeking an Order of British Columbia for Mr. Kwong.
All these years later, Mr. Kwong is at last receiving his due.
He has also come to the realization that perhaps he was a hero, just like the schoolchildren insist. Not that you’ll ever hear him say that.

In the last few years I've grown to dislike him more and more and to be honest the rants he gets into sound more like a senile old man than a professional color analyst
Also notice how the team1040 ain't saying shot about it? They're scared of the hand of god which is MG lol

On the flipside, I'd be a little annoyed by blatant homer-ism. I prefer somewhat balanced commentary. A good play is a good play. A bad play is a bad play. I don't think it's necessary to sugar coat anything. That would be borderline censorship and I'd say ruins a bit of their credibility.
I've lived in cities (Denver) where they have blatant homer-ism and it's sickening. They go as far as to find something bad to say about the other team when their team goofed up. It makes you want to mute the audio and just watch the game. I'm certainly glad that commentary here is nothing like that.
If it indeed is true that they got rid of Larscheid because he wasn't enough of a homer, then I'm disappointed in the Canucks organization. Rather than put effort into providing a better product, they're getting rid of the commentator for calling them out.
hahaha I think Larscheid is the biggest homer out there, actually. He has the most animated voice on radio, and I swear he pees a little every time we score in the playoffs. He only shits on the team sometimes because he cares sooooo damn much, and it peeves him to see the team play poorly.
Fuck the rumours. Tom Larscheid is a G.

Exactly. It's always nice to have a voice in the media that will go after the team when things are fucking up.

pretty much, he didnt know where to draw the line anymore, and imo a large result of the reason he was let go, if infact he was pushed was because he's property of the team1040
the Canucks basically own the team, what else would they have without their biggest money maker? the lions and Canadians?
the shit that tommy would go off on was nitrous fuel for retard listeners who get the ball rolling for idiotic rants and it would snowball for weeks at a time
Luongo has an off night and tommy goes on a 10 minute rant about how your "most expensive man" has to perform and it's unaccaptable not to bla bla bla
i cant remember specific examples but there were at least 3 times last year listening to the radio during either interviews or post-game analysis where i was boiling listening to the shit he was spewing
it was pretty funny driving home today listening and both Pratt and Taylor were tip-toeing all around the whole subject, just refering to an ed willis article that talked about the whole situation but they never once mentioned tommy's name over like 15 minutes of discussion, then finally somone phoned up and gave MG props, but then he said he would feel completely different about MG's character if this was indeed the case, and how "Mrs.Team" is a coward for bowing down to the demands of the canucks
Pratt and Taylor couldnt say anything after that lol, they were being so carefull it was gross

I liked Larscheid's passion and the entertainment value he brought to the position, but as others have mentioned, often times he sounded like a senile old man...
I HATE Tomlinson and am not impressed with him taking over the role. However, he has filled in before, and as long as he stays away from "who's hot in hockey" and "under the radar" segments I'm good.
Some of my favourite Larscheid quotes:
"Bingo bango bongo, his name is Roberto Luongo!"
"I just came from the Canucks dressing room and Pavel's groin has never felt better."
"Oh that was a great hand job by Skudra! He really helped out Ohlund with that one!"

It's actually three teams now according to NHL Sources Says on twitter.
San Jose
Washington
Vancouver
Willie Mitchell cuts list of teams from 4-3, Sharks, Capitals, Canucks.
Gillis seems to offering a lot of incentives for Mitchell.
I could see him signing in Vancouver again, saves him the effort of finding a new place and moving his stuff over. Also its close to his hometown. I hope he signs back in Vancouver, and send Alberts back to the Moose or waivers.

The terrible jerseys are in the minority. The Pens, Caps, Wings, Kings all have nice jerseys all around. The main Canucks jersey is questionable and most thirds are only marred by a lack of imagination but don't offend the eyes like that Ronald McDonald shit from the Flames. Minnesota's 3rd jerseys are the nicest jerseys they ever had. All the jerseys they've had in the past were ugly as shit. This one has a throwback, classic look to it. The green with cream white and a hint of red is perfect!
I believe they got the idea from the 2004 NHL all-star game which was also held in Minnesota.

Wednesday August 18 (all times ET; subject to change)
10:00 a.m. – Noon
* Hybrid icing rule;
* No line change for team committing an offside;
* Crease reset rule;

* Bigger crease;
* Verification goal line (additional line situated behind the goal line);
* Wider blue lines;
* Line changes zone in front of each bench;

* No icing the puck while shorthanded;
* OT – three minutes of 4-on-4; three minutes of 3-on-3; three minutes of 2-on-2 with long line changes; followed by three shooters per team shootout (if tied after three shots then players who have shot previously can shoot again).
Thursday August 19 (all times ET; subject to change)
9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
* No touch icing;
* Team that commits an offside infraction cannot make a line change and face-off is in offending team zone;

As for the rules they are going to test out...I'm a bit of a traditionalist and don't want to see too many changes. No touch icing though I like.
