I was 4th row and watched Kesler get his hat trick. It was an absolute gorgeous tip in. Schnieder made some Lu like saves as well but didn't squeeze the pads tight enough against the post to secure the shutout.

Atlanta Thrashers coach Craig Ramsay raised a lot of eyebrows when he decided to move newly acquired Dustin Byfuglien from forward back to defense. Three months later, Ramsay's move looks like a stroke of genius.

All Byfuglien has done is lead all defensemen in goals and points as the season reaches the halfway mark, moving him to the top of the heap among candidates for the Norris Trophy as the NHL best defenseman.

Byfuglien's 16 goals in half a season are just one less than he scored all last season while playing forward with Chicago. His 41 points are a career high, and his six game-winning goals lead the NHL, as do his three OT goals. He's one of the biggest reasons (figuratively and literally) that the Thrashers have jumped into the top eight in the Eastern Conference and seem likely to make the playoffs for just the second time in franchise history.

"I watched him handle the puck," Ramsay said of his decision. "I didn't realize he could be that good -- but I saw him handle the puck and shoot it, so I knew of that. But when you're trying to make a forward into a defenseman – even if he has been a defenseman – it's a very difficult process."

One that Byfuglien has mastered with flying colors thus far.

Toronto (January 8, 2011) – Atlanta Thrashers forward Ben Eager has been suspended for four games and will forfeit $20,752.68 in salary for delivering a blow to the head with a punch to Toronto Maple Leafs forward Colby Armstrong in NHL game #605 on January 7, the National Hockey League announced today.

Eager’s fine is based on his average annual salary and is calculated under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 17:05 of the second period. Eager was assessed a match penalty under Rule 21.1 Attempt to Injure.

Eager will miss games Jan. 9 at Carolina, Jan. 14 against Philadelphia, Jan. 15 at Dallas and Jan. 17 at Florida. He is eligible to return Jan. 20 against Tampa Bay.

It's not even about the 3 goal lead. Look at the Nucks. Why have a heavy weight fighter in your lineup to take up a spot that only plays 3-4 minutes in a game and doesn't make the lineup in the playoffs when you can take it to the other team by scoring goals while on the PP.

I know, the leafs have Orr as their fighter, but who is he going to fight when Eager is gone with his match penalty.

In this case, the leafs scored 4 PP goals on the 5 minute PP from Eager's sucker punch.

Same thing for Detroit, Chicago last year and Nucks this year. They have no heavy weight goon in their lineup. But you take a stupid penalty, and they will make you pay by scoring.

CANUCKS' VIGNEAULT TO CO-COACH TEAM IN NHL ALL-STAR GAME

NEW YORK -- Vancouver's Alain Vigneault and Philadelphia's Peter Laviolette have earned co-coaching positions in the NHL all-star game on Jan. 30 in Carolina.

Under the all-star game selection process, the coaches of the teams with the highest points percentage in the Eastern and Western Conference through Saturday get to co-lead one of the all-star teams.

Vigneault's Canucks lead the Western Conference with a points percentage of .738 with 59 points in 40 games and are assured of having the West's top points percentage through Saturday night.

Laviolette's Flyers lead the Eastern Conference with a points percentage of .695 following a 2-1 victory over New Jersey on Saturday. The Flyers have 57 points in 41 games.

By virtue of winning the 2010 Stanley Cup, Chicago coach Joel Quenneville will be the head coach of the other all-star team. Quenneville will be assisted by Mike Haviland, his assistant in Chicago.

However, I disagree with the statement that it puts us solidly on pace to beat it.

Why? Because it's way easier to fall off the pace than it is to maintain it.
