Everyone keeps saying how the Canucks need bigger forwards, but is that going to change in the next few years?
Considering our top two lines are set and now everybody wants Hodgson/Grabner to play on the 3rd line. That just leaves the 4th line?
Not really racist!

Canucks' Alex Burrows may start next season in sick bay
VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Canucks may have to start next season without their top goal-scorer.
Winger Alex Burrows had shoulder surgery last week to repair a torn labrum and it is far from certain he will be ready to play when the Canucks open the regular season in early October.
Paul Corbeil, Burrows' agent, said Monday that he does not expect Burrows to be ready for training camp and suggested he could also miss the early part of the regular season.
"He may not be ready to play until sometime in October or November," Corbeil said.
Burrows' injury is the same one winger Pavol Demitra had last season and the Canucks will have their fingers crossed that his recovery goes better than Demitra's did. Demitra required a second surgery before he finally returned after missing the first 47 games of the regular season.
Corbeil said Burrows' shoulder began bothering him in the second half of the season, but said his client was determined to finish the season.
"He played with that during the season, but you know Alex is a big warrior," Corbeil said.
Canuck assistant general manager Laurence Gilman said Burrows' play was affected by the injury, especially in the playoffs. "He clearly played with pain in the playoffs," Gilman said. "It definitely impacted his effectiveness. But Alex didn't want to come out of our lineup and wanted to play through the pain."
Burrows, 29, led the team with a career-high 35 goals in the regular season, but his production waned late in the season and in the playoffs. Burrows did not score in the team's last six regular-season games and two of his three playoff goals were empty-netters.
Gilman said Burrows sought a second medical opinion, with the Canucks' blessing, before deciding to have the surgery.
Gilman said it's too early to say how long Burrows will be out, although he acknowledged the recovery period for labrum surgery is "definitely a period of months."
"We don't know," he added. "He's only a week post-operative. As he moves through the healing process and the swelling goes down, he will be evaluated in the next 10 days or two weeks at which point we will have a better idea as to what his course of rehabilitation will be."
The labrum is a cuff of cartilage located in the shoulder joint that forms a cup in which the arm bone can move. The labrum circles the shallow shoulder socket to help make the socket deeper.
Gilman said he didn't know how the injury occurred or whether it was the result of a specific incident or just wear and tear.
"We are 100 per cent confident he will have a full recovery," Gilman said.
Burrows has been an iron man of sorts for the Canucks. He has missed just one game in the past four seasons.
Burrows, who played most of last season on Vancouver's top line with Daniel and Henrik Sedin, has three years remaining on a contract that pays him $2 million a season.

Everyone keeps saying how the Canucks need bigger forwards, but is that going to change in the next few years?
Considering our top two lines are set and now everybody wants Hodgson/Grabner to play on the 3rd line. That just leaves the 4th line?
add scheroder in it as well, 3 scoring lines :D All 3 can potentially average 45+ pts

MR_BIGGS
06-17-2010, 02:23 PM
With taking Price 5th overall, they clearly don't want to give up on the guy. They should have gotten more for Halak though. Obviously they didn't want to take on contract so they should have gotten at least a draft pic out of it to go with the Prospects or something.
From reading around, Eller is a decent prospect, who will be a solid 2 way player when pans out. If Price plays well next season, all will be forgiven.
Maybe it was a good salary cap move...

MTL fucked themselves badly on this one. Trading the goalie that single handedly got them to the Eastern Conference finals and would've won the Conn Smythe trophy had they gone deeper into the playoffs is a very stupid move by the GM. Not including the part where he doesn't even bother setting up a meeting to ask about his asking price. I can see trading Halak would get you decent prospects + picks whereas Price's value is at an all time low.
Anyways, STL just got A LOT better with Halak as their netminder. With Oshie, Perron, Pietrangelo, 14th overall pick, Backes, Berglund, Boyes, and Johnson, things don't look so bad.

Halak thrived during the Play Offs because of the system they employed. Price had 1 chance in the 1st round to steal the show but couldn't.
However, I doubt MTL will be playing the same system that will have Halak's defensemens absorbing 50 shots per game in an 82 game spread when they already couldn't handle the wear & tear in a shorterened tournament format. This is probably what factored in the Halak deal as I doubt they'll be using the same system and will be looking at a different direction instead.
MTL probably sided with Price because they project he's the better goalie individual to the system. Theoritically, they made the right choice. Realistically however...

Agreed. I believe the system made Halak more of a star than he ought to be to an extent. Price was given a chance in that system too but it did not work in his favor.
Im still on the fence with this trade. I believe MTL could have yanked some better players in return though.

Good choice by the Habs. People seem to think Halak was the sole reason the Habs got so far, it wasn't. The system they played allowed him to see almost every shot directly, and if he didn't then Hal Gill or another d-men would block the shot. He played great but besides that game 7 agaisnt Washington he wasn't a god as some put him out to be.
My prediction for Halak is he's going to have a similar career as a Theordore, smallish goalie who had 1-2 great seasons but eventually turns out to be average. Difference here is Montreal traded him before his value went down.

I agree one of the biggest reasons Halak thrived was because of the system Jacques Martin employed in the playoffs. But another big reason was Halak's play under pressure. He was calm and seemed to always rise to the occasion, especially during the elimination games when the whole city was counting on him.
Price just seems to be rattled by all the media and pressure in Montreal to me. Even throughout the regular season, Price had plenty of chances to take the No.1 spot but could never do it. I just thought it'd be better for his career to get a fresh start in a different city where he could really prove himself without all that media pressure in Montreal.

Add to the pressure is that Price loves to party, perhaps too much and in a city where he is treated like a god, that is not a good thing for his career. From what I know, the ego has been really getting to his head and he hasn't really been focused on hockey. Everytime he goes out to party, he is mobbed, pictures taken and scrutinized by the media, I really think the best thing for Price was to be traded to a non hockey market without all the media pressure and where fans aren't constantly hounding you and treating you like a god.

Kovalchuk interested in Leafs... Leafs not interested in Kovalchuk
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...rticle1606151/
What’s interesting about the Kovalchuk talk is that I’ve been told pretty definitively that the Leafs were among the teams he was interested in. While the player (who is under contract to the Devils until July 1) and his camp remain quiet on all this, the general feeling around the league is that Toronto was at least among the teams in the running.
Yesterday, ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun had a quote from Leafs GM Brian Burke basically squashing any speculation his team would be in the mix for Kovalchuk, saying simply: “We're not going to be involved in that race.”

I hope the posturing of BB is just an illusion in order to sign him. I seem to recall BB would say one thing and do the opposite when he was in Van so maybe there is hope he will pull it off. He would need to move some salary (Grabovski - trade him with Kabs for a solid top 6 forward), bury Finger in the AHL, but he would have the room. Kovy working with Kessel and possibly centered by Kadri (the KKK line) - what a scoring threat that would be.

I use the Offical Canucks Thread as an all-things hockey thread and I will contunue to do so. If anyone has a problem with that, they can create an Offical NHL thread and quit their bitching.
we'll i guess talking about kovilchuck and toronto has a a lot to do with the canucks....but for some reason calgary vs. canucks gets me sent away..

At the last sale they had his older gear from his first season with Vancouver and some GDI in the current colors that only saw practice action. If I played goal I would've bought it. Regardless it was gone in seconds of Seasons getting in.

Guess the possibility of Hamhuis coming to Vancouver is all but done.
i dont think he's been traded fully. It's just the rights to talk to him. If he doesn't sign by July 1st hes a UFA isnt he?

Adding to what Shawn said, if you look at it this way, from the past 3 years:
Philly trades Peter Forsberg for Scott Hartnell, Kimmo Timonen, Dan Carcillo and Dan Hamhuis. Not too shabby if you ask me....it seems to me that the Preds are looking more and more like Philly's farm team....
They're going to trade Coburn or Carle to make room for Hamhuis.
Schneider + SOB for Coburn?
I don't think they really need to trade Coburn or Carle. IMO, the odd man out looks like VanRiemsdyk. If that's the case, Carter pretty much has to get use to playing on the wing.
But yeah, that trade would make sense. Considering Philly needs a backup goalie, and we need another defensemen [if Mitchell doesn't resign]. But I'd rather keep Schneider for now. From the past 2-4 years or so, we [The Canucks] haven't been able to find a 'consistent' backup that can split the job with Lu...if this continues, the goalie graveyard would just continue.....

oh sweet jesus...is he hurting for money or something...can this guy just live a normal life...
CALGARY - Theoren Fleury says he considered playing himself in a stage play about his life, but decided to let an actor portray him instead.
Alberta Theatre Workshops is developing a play based on the former hockey player's life story called "Don't Quit Before The Miracle."
Fleury had a long and successful NHL career despite battles with drugs and alcohol.
Fleury, who has been open about his struggles with addiction, made headlines last fall after alleging in his book that he was abused by former coach Graham James.
The Winnipeg police are investigating those allegations.
The script for the play is based on Fleury's autobiography "Playing With Fire," which was released last year.
For the first time in franchise history, the Vancouver Canucks don't own second and third-round entry draft picks and that could change their strategy with the 25th overall selection Friday in Los Angeles.
"There's a possibility that if the player isn't there that we'd like, we'd have a possibility of moving back and gaining two picks," said general manager Mike Gillis. "We have a good group of forwards and prospect defencemen and we have good flexibility to select a player we're comfortable with."
A year ago, the Canucks cited a need for defencemen but couldn't pass on college centre Jordan Schroeder, who slipped from a consensus top-10 pick to 22nd overall. They then addressed the back end by taking Kevin Connauton, Jeremy Price and Peter Andersson in the third, fourth and fifth rounds respectively. The Canucks are lacking a big, mobile prospect blueliner who plays tough down low and thought they had one in Taylor Ellington, the 33rd pick in the 2007 draft. But his lateral movement is questionable as he split last season between Manitoba (AHL) and Victoria (ECHL).
In that respect, the Canucks could be targeting Jarred Tinordi with their first pick. The 6-foot-6, 205 pound blueliner is the son of former NHL defenceman Mark Tinordi. He had nine points and 68 penalty minutes with the U.S. National Team Development Program and was a member of the U.S. team that won the 2010 under-18 world title. Tinordi is projected as a tough, top-four defenceman.

Demitra in a car accident
On Monday evening at 7:30 pm in western Slovakia, Pavol Demitra was involved in a car accident. It is suspected that at fault was the 19 year-old driver of the Fiat Punto that ignored a yield sign and smashed into Demitra's Aston Martin. Demitra was not injured and the Fiat driver escaped with light injuries. Neither driver had alcohol in their system.
Demitra was said to be moving at a good speed and after the collision his car traveled tens of metres. Demitra immediately got out of his car and ran to help the driver of the Fiat. Strangely enough the accident occurred just several hours after the Aston Martin arrived from Vancouver. The value of Demitra's car is approximately 300 000 Euro, and it did suffer some damage on the front right side. -Just as an aside, imagine the cost and effort involved in sending your car from Vancouver to central Europe!
"I'm still a bit shaken up. The accident happened in the late evening in Nova Dubnica. Luckily nobody was injured, that is what is most important. Just yesterday my car arrived from overseas and I went to take it for a drive. I was on the main road and the other driver emerged from a side street. Right after the collision we both took breathalyzer tests and passed", said Demitra in his interview with Plus 7 Days.

Demitra lives in Slovakia during the offseason.
I would think he is rich enough to at least buy a sport car in Slovakia rather than ship his car from vancovuer to there. Maybe not another Aston, but a BMW M6 or a used Lambo, Ferrari or something
Not really racist!

My friend's dad isn't rich and he's twice shipped his personal car with him to Europe when he took jobs there, it's not that expensive... altho I would think Demo did some special shipping for an Aston haha...
Nabakov is a bum, great goalie in the regular season, shitty goalie when it's not (see playoffs and Olympics)

San Jose GM pissed Nabokov made $6million last season and Niemi made $827,000 and won the Stanley cup.
