On Saturday night at the Pepsi Coliseum in Indianapolis, Richard Marsh stood at one end of the rink and stared down at the opposite goal, which was covered by a board with a small opening for a puck to slide through.
The USHL's Indiana Ice were holding a special "Hockey for Heart" night sponsored by St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana. If Marsh scored on this extraordinarily difficult rink-length shot in the team's Allstate Good Hands Shootout, $50,000 would be donated by Allstate to St. Vincent's Cardiovascular of Indiana and the American Heart Association.
After the Ice's mascot took an inspirational heave of the puck down the ice, Marsh took his shot ... and sent the puck through the board into the net. Check it out (no sound on the video, FYI):

Here's the remarkable part: Marsh could have kept the money if he won, but decided before he even took the shot that if he made it, he was going to donate it all to charity. There was just one prize of $50,000; all of it was going to St. Vincent's Cardiovascular of Indiana and the American Heart Association.
Awesome, right?
One problem: Marsh didn't completely follow the rules.
According to the USHL, Marsh was "standing in front of the designated starting line" when he released the shot, and thus "the insurance company voided the award due to Marsh" standing in the wrong place. Which makes it a real killjoy. Isn't there some sort of exception for ridiculous goals scored by guys who look like substitute physics teachers?
(Clarification: There's been some vitriol in the comments regarding AllState, so we contacted the USHL about its role in the matter. Sure enough, Brian Werger of the USHL said the initial release from the League didn't clearly state the fact that a third-party insurance company hired to cover this event at Ice games, and not Allstate, was the one that made the call not to pay out the $50,000.)
With that, it was Paul and Cindy Skjodt to the rescue. The Indiana Ice owners, who are credited with keeping the franchise alive in Indianapolis, "made a donation in recognition of the accomplishment" to the charities, according to the USHL. The amount of the donation was not disclosed.
All in all, a heartwarming tale. Mascot hugs for everyone.

Even if he only scores 40 a year, $5m a year isn't a stretch. If he gets to 60 points, that's franchise defenseman material. He hasn't proven himself IMO but there's really no reason to believe he can't do this again next year.

Kessel is 23 and has years to hit his prime and potential with the right line mates. Its not like Seguin has been lighting up the league (he was relegated to the press box for a while there). I was against the trade from the start but its not like Burke got some aging player with no potential to improve. This trade still has years to go before anyone can really say who won or lost and by how much. I might also add that its not set in stone that the Leafs are giving up a second lottery pick this year - the east is weak and there are is still plenty of room to move up in the standings.

you could make the same argument for the hawks and kings who have positive goal differentials at +25 and +21. I guess the case here is that they score lots when they win but when they lose, its usually by one or two goals

but thats not the point. the canucks have scored 5 or more goals (by my count) 11 times in 58 games spread evenly thru the season. if you can light up 5 goals in a night, you're probably going to win that game. and when you couple that with having the lowest GAA in the league at 2.36, while having the highest Goals For at 3.38, you've got a real good shot at winning ALOT of games. which, by golly, the canucks ARE doing!

Teams that have a winning record, but have a bad goal differential means they manage to win tight games, but when they lose, they lose big.

This indicates that they have been somewhat "lucky" thus far...

Consider a four games stretch where they go 4-3, 2-1, 3-2 (SO), 1-7.

They are -4 in goal differential in that stretch, even though they were 3-1.

Taking away variance, the games could have just as easily went 3-4, 2-3, 2-3, 2-3.

Same number of goals scored for both teams, but they go 0-4 instead.

Sure, granted it's not a perfect way to gauge how well they've been playing, but I'm pretty sure there are some facts that show a team with a good goal differential usually ends up doing better than a team that doesn't.

We've been good about not letting Weber use his shot in the past view games. The Canucks have been double teaming him and putting pressure on him so he does not have a shooting lane that may cause a turn over.

A few of our Dmen have been crucial on the offensive plays as well - they help move the puck around with our puck cycle - and lots of times have been shooting the puck in for a goal, or for a tip shot.
