Again, we find out if we really have the depth we thought we had. I don't like how we have to find out but we're still in first place with enough time for the injured players to be ready come playoffs. If we can get through this bout of injuries, imagine how great it's going to be when they start coming back, hungry.

i picked up grabs on my pool right after the all star break, i was a lil scared he might slow down, but damn, hes been better. Hes probably gonna get maybe 3rd star of the week honors by the league
and hes makin a strong push to be considered to finish top 5 in calder nominations. He wont win tho. Jeff skinner will probably take it

great win for the boys
suspensions from last nights islanders game handed out finally:
The NHL suspended New York Islanders forwards Trevor Gillies for nine games and Matt Martin for four while slapping the club with a US$100,000 fine late Saturday night for their actions in a fight-filled win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Enforcer Eric Godard was the lone Penguin punished by the league, receiving an automatic 10-game suspension for leaving the bench Friday night to join a third-period brawl.

Grabner was given every chance to compete for a spot since he was brought in. One of the guys that was in contention? Mason Raymond
Again, everyone knew that grabs was gonna be a goal scorer, but the work ethic coming into camp was never there to begin with. His sloppy performance during camp was also a factor. Its the single reason why FLA waived him.
As of now, Grabner looks happy, hes on a squad that albeit sucks shit, but its an organization that gives him the playing time that he has earned. He started on the Islanders on the 3rd/4th line and now look at him go on a tear. It also helps his cause that we have Okposo dishing him the puck.
We caught a glimpse of what Grabner has turned into last season when he scored the hattie against hte ducks(i think?) He had a respectable AHL year and his 11pt effort in 20games with the canucks is also respectable with the talent the Canucks carry upfront
With that, I'd still trade Grabner, His value was probably worth more than Schroeder or Hodgson to certain teams. Hes a player that was pretty much NHL ready. Grabner lost his spot on the canucks with the emergence of Raymond.

grabner > kessel :troll:
having Ballard on D gets us closer to winning a cup than Grabner on any forward position
Speaking of Ballard..
Keith Ballard's feathers refuse to be ruffled
Confronted with adversity, defenceman reveals positive attitude and sense of humour
The day after Keith Ballard was viciously twisted like a pretzel by Milan Michalek last week, you wanted him to be fired up, and expected him to call out the Ottawa forward for a cheap, chicken crap play.
Instead, he told jokes.
When Ballard was a healthy scratch earlier in the season, you wanted him to vent and express frustration he wasn't in the lineup and Aaron Rome, a journeyman NHL defenceman, was in his place.
Instead, he said Rome was the right decision. He was convincing, too.
When Ballard's minutes hovered around 14 because he was a $4.2 million fifth defenceman, you expected him to complain.
Instead, he couldn't be happier.
What gives with this guy?
Through all the issues he's been confronted with this year -hip surgery, a concussion, the flu, healthy scratches, a diminished role and now a knee sprain -he's handled it all faultlessly. He's never seemed down, angry, frustrated or disappointed. And there's a good reason.
"You want to know why? It's because there is a special feeling coming to the rink every day, knowing you have a great chance to win every night," Ballard said. "You don't have that in very many places. For me, who's never been around that, it's awesome. I love it.
"For me, the last thing I'm concerned about is playing an extra two minutes. It's not my concern. There's more important things than how many minutes I play. All good teams, there are players taking less and playing less to keep teams together."
Minutes are one thing, but what about when he was benched after playing a few games upon returning from a concussion?
"I didn't deserve to play when I sat out. It was really good for me," Ballard admitted.
Clearly, few players are this honest.
Ballard is expected to miss another three weeks with a knee sprain. He's already missed 11 games, a big number when you consider he missed only 13 in the past five years combined before the offseason trade to Vancouver. The good news is he should be back in plenty of time to play his first-ever NHL playoff game.
It looked brutal what Michalek did to him. But it seemed to barely faze Ballard who joked about the frightening picture which made the rounds showing his knee bent backward in an unnatural position.
Is this guy for real?
If it's all an act, give him an Oscar.
Just ask Chris Tanev, who Ballard took under his wing when the rookie defenceman arrived. In Tanev's first game with the Canucks, Ballard never seemed further than five feet from him. A good distance to fill his ear with both instruction and humour.
"Not only was he talking to me about systems, he kept telling me to stay calm and he's always keeping things light on the bench," Tanev said. "He's a really good guy and one who has helped me a lot, taking the pressure off.
"Even when I make a mistake, he's joking. He's saying I'll get it next time. We'll be better."
Ballard said it's just another part of the job.
"He kept coming back to the bench saying 'sorry for this, sorry for that.' I kept telling him it's okay, these things happen," Ballard said. "Don't worry about it because over 27 shifts in a game you can't worry about a puck that rolled up on you or if you gave me a bad pass.
"When I was younger, the guys who I played with were always like that and I know it made a big impact. The guys I played were so good at making me feel comfortable and I want to do the same thing for the young guys now."
Ballard thinks the Canucks can weather this run of injuries. Already without Ballard and Alex Edler, the Canucks appeared to lose Dan Hamhuis too after he was left dazed by a Ryan Getzlaf hit Wednesday.
"Most teams, I don't think, could handle losing even a guy like Alex, but look at what's happened to us. Dan and I have been out. Christian (Ehrhoff) has been out and you don't question whether we can survive," Ballard said.
"We don't have a defence where we lean on one guy or just two guys. We do it by committee. Alex and Christian have carried us on the offensive end while Dan and Kevin (Bieksa) are playing those tough minutes against other teams top lines.
"Myself and others have been filling in where needed.
"If it gets to the point when everyone is healthy, it's a tough problem to have but it's a good problem to have. What it means is there will be players out who don't deserve to be sitting. But that's what you play for, to be on the best team possible.
"I'm not into seeing how many minutes I can play. I'm having a blast this year."

Interesting article on Torres.
Mikael Samuelsson can't seem to miss and Raffi Torres can't seem to hit.
Such is life for most NHL forwards who generally find themselves on either side of a sometimes cruel wave of inconsistency.
Alex Ovechkin scores once in 11 games, then boom he goes off for six in ten. Samuelsson bottoms out, going 14 games without a goal. He looks slow, and hesitant. People call him lazy.
Then, he gets rest during the all-star break. He scores one, then another. Look today, he has seven goals in eight games.
It's frustrating when going wrong, thrilling when going right and just about impossible to explain. That last sentence could define goal scoring in general or be used to sum up Torres' career.
Drafted No. 5 overall in 2000, Torres slapped 20 goals on the board in his first NHL season. He had 27 in his second.
He was a critical contributor of the Edmonton Oilers 2006 Stanley Cup run, too, with 11 points in 22 games.
But that seems like so long ago now. So does the last time Torres did something to impact a game.
Whatever Torres had at the beginning of the season — and he did have seven goals in his first 12 games — he's long since misplaced it.
He has four in the 44 since. He hasn't scored in 20, a streak which started with him playing 15:24.
Against Calgary, he was benched for all but one shift of the third and saw the ice for just 6:20.
The confounding part in all of this, is the truth: The Canucks don't need Torres to score. If he's forechecking with purpose and finishing checks, maybe fewer people are wondering if his team is lacking edge.
He should be able to skate, pound, and aggravate. See Jannik Hansen, who has been enriching his team in several ways even if he only has two more goals than Torres in the past 20.
The puzzling part may be the fact Torres is well aware of all of this but is struggling to do something about it.
"I want to be contributing now, even if I'm not getting any goals or not doing anything offensively," Torres said. "I got to bring the physicality.
"But when I'm not scoring, I tend to try and do too much and I forget I can be physically dominant out there.
"I feel like I've started to focus on that again, started to move my legs and starting to go through guys."
If you watched him closely Saturday, you could see Torres was trying.
But every hit he lined up, he was either too late or too early. The result was another performance multiplied by zero.
"It's not like I forgot how to play," Torres said. "It's not like I'm showing up at the game and I'm not trying to score a goal or not trying to make a play. It's the opposite.
"I'm doing everything I can to prepare myself for the game and sometimes it just doesn't click, sometimes it doesn't go.
"What I have to do is stay on the same track and not get sidetracked."
This was going to be the year to salvage Torres' career.
At 29, he was at something of a crossroads in August. He signed a one-year, $1 million US deal with the Canucks. Not a lot of comfort or security in that. It doesn't mean this is his last chance. But you can see it from here.
"If for whatever reason you're having a tough time getting on the score sheet, you have to find another way to contribute," Alain Vigneault said. "Whether that's through faceoffs, finishing checks or making good defensive plays. You have to find another way to chip in.
"The guys have been doing that."
Last season, Torres struggled down the stretch. In his last two games with Buffalo, in the playoffs, he was scratched. He vowed it wouldn't go down like that again.
"It will come, there is nothing I like more than those playoff games" he said. "I know how to be effective. I know I'll bring it."
What does he need?
"Confidence," he said. "This game is 90 per cent mental and 10 per cent physical. There are times when you want that puck. Look at Samuelsson, he's shooting from everywhere. Maybe a couple a weeks ago, he would have passed on those plays.
"It's tough for me right now. I'm not getting regular shifts anymore. I respect that. But there are things I need to do to be effective. And I've seen it the past few games.
"I definitely see an upside coming."
He should. He's due.

Comparing Peter Forsberg to Brett Favre is completely asinine. Favre retired and then unretired because the idiot couldn't make up his mind. Forsberg never officially retired and kept leaving hockey because his body (more specifically his foot) wouldn't let him play. I don't get how you can compare the two and even call the guy a goofball. I thought players with that kind of passion for the game were revered, not ridiculed.

Gotta feel bad for him tho. Hes truely battled to keep playing for the last couple years, but God just doesnt want him on skates.
(Ir)regardless if Torres is scoring goals, as long as hes out there playing his game every night, I want him on our team. He provides some despirately lacking grit on the front end, and it comes cheap. When hes playing his game, hes banging forechecks, and battling hard in the corners, and isnt affraid of getting a little dirty. He isnt unreliable defensively, and as he showed at the beginning of the season and earlier in his career, he can score goals. Hes the guy you want on the 4th line.

I forgot about this, I was hoping some miracle fixed his foot over night when I heard he was practicing with the Avs. But if you look at it it seems Colorado did him a favor letting him retire as a Av instead of retiring while playing for modo. This whole thing might have just been a publicity stunt if you consider that he said he was done with hockey when he was with modo earlier this year, who knows though.

Scoring on Halak = perfect shot or a goal like the second one, where there's no way in the world for him to get back into play.
Need powerplay, plus extra player to tie this one.
Damn, doesn't look good. Someone please upload pic of Kelly, if we lose.
