By the way, those worried that Kesler hasn't been as beastly in the first two games of this series as the last...I have what is probably the simple explanation. Not saying it's correct but it would make sense.

Round 1: Kesler doesn't score but keeps most of the Hawks off the scoreboard, mostly Toews until he got that goal in the last minute of game 7. I think he had a great series even if it didn't show in the score. He was physical and shooting a lot but just didn't get pucks in.

Round 2: Nashville doesn't have much of an offense to shut down so Kes could focus more on shooting and scoring. When he doesn't have to play serious defense (LOL Mike Fisher), he can beast it up on offense and he won that entire series for us.

Round 3: Not only does San Jose have a serious offense for Kesler to play against, the Sharks also know that Kesler is a gamebreaker after seeing his performance in round 2 so they've probably focused more of their defensive effort on him. This has allowed the Sedins and pretty much everyone else more room on the ice so you see the Sedins breaking out in this series.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and True North Sports and Entertainment denied a deal has been reached to sell the team to True North, which would relocate it to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Globe and Mail in Toronto reported Thursday that the Thrashers’ agreement with True North was done and will be announced in Winnipeg on Tuesday. True North is led by Winnipeg businessman Mark Chipman and billionaire David Thomson, whose family owns The Globe and Mail.

On his weekly radio show Thursday, Bettman said no deal has been made to move the Thrashers to Winnipeg.

“We get reports, speculation, that the team’s gone,” Bettman said. “And there’s no deal. I can tell you that with certainty that there is no deal for this team to move. Am I predicting that there will never be or that there won’t be at some point in time? No, I’m not saying there is or there isn’t.”

True North spokesman Scott Brown told The Canadian Press the report is “not true.”

While no deal is final, the reprieve for Atlanta could be short-lived. One of the Thrashers’ lead owners, Bruce Levenson, has said his top priority has been to find a buyer who would keep the team in Atlanta.

The two-year search for a buyer to keep the team in Atlanta hasn’t been successful.

Winnipeg lost the Jets in 1996 when the team moved to Phoenix because of financial problems. Atlanta lost a team to a Canadian city in 1980 when the Flames moved to Calgary, Alberta.

Bettman, who fielded calls from Thrashers fans on his show, said the league will consider moving a team only when there is no owner willing to keep the team in its current city.

“The key to this may be, in the final analysis, whether or not somebody wants to own the team in Atlanta,” Bettman said. “In the absence of either the current ownership group continuing to own and operate or somebody stepping forward who wants to buy the club, that becomes the situation that concerns us or any sports league.

“We’ll only leave a market—in this case Atlanta, picking up on the caller’s statements—if we have to. And hopefully the current ownership group will figure a way out of this that makes sense for everybody.”

The Thrashers are still planning a select-a-seat event for season-ticket holders at Philips Arena on Saturday. Fans are planning a rally before the event.

Levenson would not say on Thursday if Atlanta fans can still make an impact with a strong turnout at the rally on Saturday.

“I understand their frustration but as I have said we are not allowed to comment on discussions with potential buyers and we must operate the business as usual until we find a solution,” Levenson told The Associated Press.

Bettman will follow the turnout by Thrashers fans at Saturday’s rally.

“It will be interesting to see how many people show up at the rally on Saturday,” Bettman said.

Levenson would not comment on the Toronto report or the status of talks with any potential buyer.

True North owns Winnipeg’s MTS Centre, which would be home to the Thrashers if the deal is finalized, and the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose.

Bettman said “time is getting short” if a deal can be reached in time for the Thrashers to move for the 2011-12 season.

The Thrashers’ average attendance this season was 13,469, 28th out of 30 teams. Attendance has declined as the Thrashers, who made their debut as an expansion franchise in 1999, have made only one playoff appearance and some fans became impatient with team management.

The ownership group led by Levenson and Michael Gearon Jr. also owns the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and operating rights to Philips Arena.

But then again, nothing Bettman ever says is true so the deal is probably already done but he wants to try to leverage something with a prospective buyer that would keep the team in Atlanta.

Quebec City and Hamilton are probably the best choices for markets but they don't have a modern arena that can handle a NHL team so one would have to be built after securing an owner. Winnipeg has the facilities and a good sized population but good luck getting free agents willing to play there.

If they don't want to live in Edmonton, they sure as hell aren't going to like Winnipeg. If Pronger gets traded there, that would be AWESOME.

PNW is a pretty good hockey area; they have five WHL teams: Seattle Thunderbirds, Everett Silvertips, Tri-City Americans (Kennewick/Pasco/Richland in the south-east), Spokane Chiefs, and Portland Winterhawks. Everett especially has some insane fans - attendance at Giants games when the 'Tips visit typically swells by a couple thousand of travelling fans and their cowbells.

Key Arena is a dump, that is the main reason the Sonics moved, because the city wouldn't build a new arena. Key Arena also has a horrible configuration for hockey, it wasn't built with hockey in mind.

Portland might be more ready for an NHL team with the Rose Garden able to facilitate a hockey setup properly. Paul Allen, the owner of the Seahawks and Trailblazers, who also owns the company that owns the Rose Garden, has in the past expressed passing interest in an NHL team.

The most telling quote to surface after Vancouver's 7-3 trouncing of San Jose in Game 2 came from Sharks head coach Todd McLellan: "The game was still 3-2 halfway through the third period basically, 12 minutes left, and I thought prior to that we already lost our composure. It wasn't like we lost it when it was 5-2 or 6-2. We lost it at 3-2."
Frustration had already set in for Sharks' forwards. They were unable to establish any sustained pressure in Vancouver's zone — every time the puck found the stick of a Canuck defender it seemed like it was immediately headed back toward the Sharks' zone, where long stretches of pressure seemed to be the norm.
Vancouver's d-corps frustrates with precision — there's a reason the Canucks are outscoring the Sharks 6-1 in the third period after two games. After two periods of quick transitions that quell offensive chances before they start and force more time to be spent in the d-zone, the ice starts to feel sloped.
The good news for the Sharks is that they have more than enough talent to turn the tide and swim this series back in the other direction; it's just a matter of neutralizing those mobile d-men, which is no easy feat.
Not easy, mind you, but fun. It's officially time to play the type of hockey most skill guys love as the playoff standard of "play it safe" and "get it deep" hasn't accomplished a whole lot for the Sharks' forwards. It's time for a little offensive shinny.
Dump-and-chase hockey is based partly on the concept that you assume the other team's defensemen are morons. You rarely have enough speed to dump it in and be the first person to get to it, so you're hoping that with a good forecheck, whichever d-man gets to the puck first will make a mistake and fail to get things moving back the other way.
The answer to breaking the puck out against the dump and chase is to have skilled defenseman, which the Canucks do (this is why the dump and chase in the NHL is dying, by the way. Most defensemen are just too good these days, from top to bottom.)
So far in this series Vancouver D looks a bit like Chicago's last year -- they got big minutes from their top four, all of whom stubbornly continued to get the puck in the hands of their team's talented forwards with nearly every chance they got.
All this adds up to show that the Sharks have to keep the puck off the stick of their opposing defenders at all costs, something most players are not used to being told. It's usually accepted that to advance zones, you basically "punt." Fire it down the ice and get a stop.
But that's not easy when you're up against high-end quarterbacks.
On zone entries — whether they have numbers or not — the Sharks need to place puck possession at a premium. Whether that means they need to run some delays and wait for help, or they need to curl back in the neutral zone until they can regroup and take another offensive run, it has to happen. They need to keep the puck in their hands until it's time to fire.
When you work so hard to get possession, and find that the second your opponent touches the thing they establish solid control right back, frustration builds. As McLellan said, the score was only 3-2 when his team started having a meltdown, but they didn't seem to sense that the game was still within reach.
With that rising frustration, things can unravel on the bench. The D might call out the forwards for not maintaining control or creating chances at the other end, the forwards get mad because their D haven't been as adept as getting the puck into their hands, and if feels like the whole game has been defend, defend, defend. It's just so hard to get into an offensive rhythm.
The Canucks have six defenseman who don't have to be bang-it-off-the-glass-and-give-it-right-back guys, which isn't a trait many teams have. Playing guys that operate like that is a dream. Chance thwarted! Here's the puck back, try again!
Between the Sharks "big three", Devin Setoguchi(notes), Logan Couture(notes), Ryan Clowe and Joe Pavelski(notes) (even if he is still stuck with Kyle Wellwood(notes) and Torrey Mitchell(notes)), there's enough talent that they don't have to simply donate the puck to the Canucks because they're "playing it safe."
Game 3 is Game 7 for them, and it's time to go river hockey style on the O-side. If the Canucks want the puck in Game 3, they should at least be forced to take it.

Dear "G.H.":

All participants bring their unique style and individual personality to every game. Relative to coaches, I found it was important to try and figure out quickly what they responded to in order to establish a good working relationship. Quite often, if a need arose, I would go directly to the coach to deliver a message rather than through the team captain. Two of the very best coaches that I observed during my 30-year NHL career were Scotty Bowman and Al Arbour. Both were extremely disciplined and astute. I respected all of the coaches that I encountered and accepted their unique styles and often efforts to gain an advantage for the next call. Often, it would become a game within the game itself. Here are few of the personalities I dealt with.

Glen Sather was the guy with the best wit behind the bench I have ever seen. He was a master at taking the pressure off his players by keeping it loose. In 1985, the Oilers won the Stanley Cup against Mike Keenan and his Philadelphia Flyers. Toward the end the regular season, I worked the Oilers game in Chicago Stadium. The Oilers were getting trounced and the score hit double digits. Glen didn't want his team to carry a spanking of this sort with them into the playoffs. Frustration had set in and Kevin Lowe demonstrated this when he broke a stick over a Blackhawk with a couple of minutes left in the game.

After assessing the penalty, I noticed Glen and his entire team standing up on the players' bench with their sticks up confronting a Hawks fan. The last thing I wanted was to have players scale the glass and an incident with the fans. I rushed over and hollered at Glen and got his attention. Like a maestro conducting a symphony orchestra, he waved the percussion section to sit. All the players took their seats. I asked Glen if he wanted me to get some additional security over to protect his players and remove the 'obnoxious' fan?" (I just wanted the game over without having to write a report.) Glen replied, "No Kerry, everything's all right now. That @#$%* said the penalty you called against Kevin Lowe was @#$%* but we stuck up for you!" I laughed, Glen laughed but more importantly all his players laughed. The ice was broken; the embarrassment of a humiliating loss was derailed.

His players called him "Iron Mike" for good reason. I got along great with Mike Keenan. As a matter of fact, when he left the Philadelphia Flyers and moved to Chicago in 1988, he had a great house for sale near the Flyers Skate Zone (practice rink) in Voorhees, NJ. My wife Kathy and I were relocating with our six children to the United States from our hometown of Sarnia, Ontario. We had decided that the Philadelphia market was most suitable to our list of needs and Mike's house was perfect for us. (NHL President, John Ziegler didn't think much of the purchase but that's another story)

So we made the transaction and moved into Keenan's old house. A few years passed as well as a few teams and several houses later for Mike until he ended up in Boston for the 2000-01 season. It was just before the playoffs and we were operating in the two-referee system. I was the back referee and Iron Mike was yelling at my young referee partner as play stopped. I raced over to the Bruins bench, stuck my finger in the coaches face and yelled, "Mike, that @#$%* house you sold me, the roof is leaking." The most innocent look appeared on Keenan's face as he backed up with his hand up and palms open and said, "Kerry, honest, I thought I got it fixed!"

All the players on the bench started to laugh. I knew by the look on Mike's face that he wasn't kidding and I backed away scratching my helmetless head. Two weeks later, we had a heavy rain and water started pouring down the chimney of the double sided fireplace. Upon inspection of the roof, Mike had applied excessive amounts of black roofing tar to the flashing which had finally let go. C'mon, Coach!

The coach that unloaded on me with the most foul, vile, offensive language ever was Marc Crawford. It happened when he was a rookie coach with the Quebec Nordiques late in the 1994-95 season in a game in Florida. 'Crow' won the Jack Adams Award as Coach of the Year but that night, he really ruffled my feathers and caused me to issue him a "career warning."

The frustration that Crawford felt as his team was heading in the wrong direction just prior to the playoffs erupted with a minute and a half left in the game. His Nordiques lost to Tampa 5-2 the night before and were about to go down to the Panthers by a score of 4-2 after giving up three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game on just seven shots at Jocelyn Thibault.

Rookie Peter Forsberg had just taken a penalty and Crawford waited me out at the bench before putting his players on the ice. I approached the bench knowing full well some form of verbal attack was forthcoming. I remained stoic as the Crow flew off the handle. When he was finished, I told him it was the most unprofessional dialogue I had ever heard and not one player on his bench believed what they had just heard but that he and I would save it for another day. What I needed from him right now was to put four players on the ice and I needed them now, PLEASE.

As calm and professional as I remained on the outside, I was burning up on the inside. I was still fuming as I removed my skates in the dressing room after the game when a knock on the door interrupted me. Opening the door, I found Crawford standing before me with his head down asking if he could apologize. I quickly invited Marc into our dressing room, shared with linesmen Ray Scapinello and Greg Devorski. I invited Marc to have a beer, which he accepted. We shared a beer and had open dialogue relative to what had taken place and the frustration he felt for the direction that his team was heading at this crucial time of the season.

I accepted Marc's sincere apology and made a pact with him before Scapinello and Devorski as my witnesses. I told Marc that I didn't hold a grudge but that I was issuing him a "career warning" which meant that if he ever swore at me again from the bench, he would immediately receive a bench penalty. Crow agreed and we shook hands to cement the deal.

About one year later at the same time of the season, the Colorado Avalanche (formerly the Nordiques) and I met up in Anaheim. Midway through the third period, I had assessed a holding penalty to Sylvain Lefebvre and then a cross-checking penalty to Craig Wolanin. Paul Kariya scored 13 seconds later to put the Ducks ahead by a score of 2-1. From the Colorado bench, I heard the distinctive high-pitched voice of Marc Crawford yell, "Kerry, what the fuh-." Those were the only syllables he got out of his mouth as I wheeled around and signaled a bench minor. Crow just hung his head knowing that a deal was a deal.
