So bittersweet seeing Schneider play so well this season. I am almost melancholic watching Schneider play SO well this season.
When he was drafted, Canuck fans all thought he would be the Goalie of the future. So hopeful. After years and years of being let down by goaltending and poor draft picks, there was something Canuck fans had to look forward to in the future.
We followed him as he grew and nurtured through college and Manitoba. We were disappointed to not see him make the team last season and the season before that, but were hopeful to hear about his successes as he blossomed in the Moose. And this season, we finally get to see and experience, what we were all hoping for when the Canucks first drafted him nearly seven years ago.
However, we all know in the back of our heads, that this will very likely be the first, and last season we will ever see Cory Schneider wear a Canucks uniform.

i think you're absolutely correct. BUT! it's in cory's best interest to become a #1 goalie for another team and i wish him all the best in his future. he's simply too good to be our backup forever. we are being spoiled by two excellent goalies at the moment. and yes, i also believe that cory has pushed luongo to be better (as 89blkcivic pointed out).

SAN JOSE — Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin doesn't understand why the National Hockey League exonerated Boston Bruin Zdeno Chara, but San Jose Shark Joe Thornton has an idea.
“It's just something with Boston; it seems like they have a horse shoe,” Thornton said before Thursday's game between the Canucks and Sharks.
“There's just something about Boston and the disciplinary [decisions] are on their side. I'm not sure why that is or anything. I'm not assuming that Colin's kid being on the team, that's why.”
NHL senior vice-president Colin Campbell's son, Greg, plays for the Bruins.
Campbell's assistant in the NHL justice department, Mike Murphy, ruled Wednesday that Chara would not be suspended for running Montreal Canadien Max Pacioretty into a stanchion by the player benches on Tuesday, causing head and neck injuries.
Thornton noted that only two games earlier, Bruin Milan Lucic was not suspended for a blindside cross-check to the head of Tampa's Dominic Moore, who was engaged with Bruin Nathan Horton after a whistle.
“We saw the Lucic cross-check to the head a couple of nights earlier and there's no disciplinary thing,” Thornton said. “It's just really bizarre.”
Sedin agreed with Thornton that all players know where stanchions are in rinks and understand the danger of hitting or getting hit in that area.
Sedin and Thornton are Hart Trophy winners, two of the best players in the NHL.
Citing Chara's clean disciplinary record, Murphy said the stanchion in Montreal caused Pacioretty's injury, not the Bruin pushing the Canadien towards the partition.
Presumably, then, if one player injures another by running him into a goalpost, the post is at fault?
“Exactly,” Sedin said. “What are you doing to do the next time Trevor Gillies comes down and runs a guy into the thing? You can't give him anything. And you tell the guys [Chara] has no history, so the next time he does it he still has no history because he didn't get suspended. I don't see the reasoning behind it. Give him at least something to show that's not acceptable.”
Sedin said he doesn't believe Chara intended to seriously injure Pacioretty, but it was no accident that the Canadiens player struck the pillar that supports the glass separating the benches.
Thornton said the decision not to suspend Chara reflects even worse on the NHL than the actual hit.
“I'll tell you this: if you say that you don't know where things are around the ice, I think you're not telling the truth,” Sedin said. “You play the game for 20 years, you know it's there. It's gotten to the point, you have to suspend guys if you hit the head. You have to do it even if guys say they didn't mean to do it or it's an accident. You have to start somewhere.
“I don't think players know where the limit is. That's the bottom line.”
Sharks winger Ryane Clowe, a physical power forward, said Chara probably was just trying to recover his position when he “threw” Pacioretty.
“Chara is so big, there's so much mismatch on size,” Clowe said. “I don't know if he knew he was going to throw him that far and have so much impact. I agree you've got to be aware [of the stanchion]. You know it's there. A lot of times you don't see too many hits in that area and I think that's why — most guys kind of let up a little bit.
“Chara has hit so many guys throughout his career and never been suspended, so he's obviously not a dirty player. [But] when someone is injured that severe, whatever the hit is, you expect some kind of punishment. I think you almost need to give some kind of punishment for having a guy injured that severely. I think that's something that maybe should be put in place.”

Sure thats great if they actually cared league wide but they only cared because it happened to the canadiens. Why not come out when Cooke ended Savards career or the Islanders game when Gillies snapped or the many other incidents in the last couple of years. My point is they are only raising a fuss because it happened in eastern canada. TSN interviewed nhl players from different teams and the greater percentage are saying that its an accident, that no legal charges should be laid and that the canadiens ownership are at as much of at fault themselves because of poor arena design. Pronger even told people that the arena is "odd" because of the design which is where Pacioretty got injured.
At least they cared...it's better than never caring at all

^^^In light of that evidence, I retract what I have been saying all along. Those are NHL players. Good enough to convince me. Still, they have to find a way to get rid of the stanchion. Come up with a better design. Like the goal that comes off its mounts.

In my honest opinion. Chara should know the Bell Center pretty damn well by now, having played the majority of his career in the NORTHEAST DIVISION, he damn well knows of the turnbuckle.
As for the NHL, it doesnt come to me as a surprise. What I do dislike is having the law come into play. There will be no way that anyone can prove if Chara intended to hurt MaxPac

I think it's more to do with the player then the team. Jody Shelly is a goon so of course they have no problem suspending him. If it was Adam Mcquaid who did the same hit that game he would have been suspended without question. The NHL generally doesn't suspend its stars unless it's for repeat offeses, ie: Ovechkin and wreckless hits.
It's BS and a double standard but it's always been there.

Short term a first round pick for Schneider does nothing for us, this and future drafts looks pretty weak unless we get a top 5 overall for him
Canucks are best suited to try and get him on board for as long as possible, having a backup that can play 20 games and win 3/4 of them is alot more valuable than a first rounder that will take many years to develop

i very much think the salary cap is part of the issue unless cory decides he's okay with playing the back up role and at a discount for us. this is of course, after the 2011-2012 season where cory will become a UFA. we're basically circumventing the cap right now with LTIR (or "luck" as ppl have put it :lol). we will be seeing a lot of changes next year on our D. there's no way in hell we can keep bieksa + salo + ehrhoff + ballard + hamhuis + edler on the 2011-2012 roster all year long. also, keep in mind of those 6, only edler, ballard and hamhuis are still on contract. salo, ehrhoff and bieksa are all due to be UFA's after this season. then you factor in forwards. this really reminds me of the situation chicago had after last season.
our projected cap space is $12.8 mil next year with only 14 players (out of the current 25) signed. also, currently the sum salary of all our defenseman is $25.65 mil :D

SAN JOSE, Calif. — During the NHL lockout, a concerted effort was made to create a new, better game.
This game would be faster and more wide open than the hockey that had been played for the previous decade because, well, it had to be. But, in opening up the game, the league’s stakeholders were aware they were creating potential problems.
These areas were discussed at both the general manager’s level and the competition committee level and a solution was reached. If the game was faster, and therefore more dangerous, the league would have to be vigilant in policing certain kind of hits with supplementary discipline.
Everyone agreed on this. Everyone left the matter with the league and, at first, the reaction wasn’t as strong as some might have hoped. Then, early last season, Mike Richards served up the perfect test case for the NHL when he obliterated the Panthers’ David Booth with a blindside hit.
The circumstances were almost ideal. Richards was a repeat offender. He received a major and a game misconduct on the play. Booth would miss most of the season with a concussion. And with a chance, once and for all to establish a clear precedent, this is what the NHL did.
Nothing. No suspension. No clear message. Nothing. And ever since, they’ve been trying to contain a problem that is now threatening to consume the game.
This is the story everyone in the league is talking about. This has taken over the hockey narrative. Zdeno Chara’s hit on Max Pacioretty has sparked yet another firestorm around the issue of head shots, but this time it is more heated, more intense.
It’s also become a huge national story. Pacioretty speaks from his hospital bed. Air Canada fires off a letter to the NHL threatening to pull its sponsorship. Gary Bettman, who’s had an interesting week, fires right back. There’s a police investigation. There’s a reaction on Parliament Hill. It’s in the newpapers. On the airwaves.
And this story isn’t being driven by the media. It’s everywhere in the game.
“The players are concerned,” San Jose’s Ryan Clowe said before Thursday night’s game with the Vancouver Canucks.
“I’m concerned about my teammates’ health, the health of the players around the league and I’m concerned about my own health. I don’t want to see players injured like that, and I don’t want to hurt someone like that, either.
“I think the guys care. Guys aren’t voicing a strong opinion because they want to be careful what they say. But talking to guys around the league, I know they’re concerned. In some positions you’re so vulnerable you don’t want someone hitting you like that.”
But still it continues.
Clowe, in fact, should be an authoritative voice on this subject. He plays tough. He plays with an edge. He’s also disturbed by what he sees, even as he recognizes the inherent conflict within the game he loves.
“It’s got to be on the players,” he said. “But it’s hard. If you’re not playing physically, you’re getting heat from your coaches and you’ll lose your job.”
So what’s to be done?
Well, something would be a start.
If you go back to the Richards hit and suspend the Flyers’ forward for eight games, what follows? Does Matt Cooke blindside Marc Savard knowing the precedent has been established? Does David Steckel alter his course to avoid Sidney Crosby? Does Chara ease up on Pacioretty as they near the stanchion? Does Pavel Kubina raise his elbow and deliver a blow to the head of David Bolland one night later?
More to the point, does a lengthy suspension to Richards change the way players think and react? That’s what has to happen here. There has to be a fundamental change and, as Clowe said: “It’s got to be on the players.”
But they need help getting there.
This subject will come up again next week when those same general managers meet in Florida and they have a chance to go back and right a wrong. This time they have to come out with a clear purpose. This time they have to enforce sanctions to their full extent.
This time they have to change the way the game is played. A lot is riding on their response.

You entice players to stick around by winning and running a quality franchise that has a shot year in year out, ie Detroit

Bettman not afraid to play rough
Bettman holds new contract and all the cards
DAVID SHOALTS
From Friday's Globe and Mail
Published Friday, Mar. 11, 2011 12:34AM EST
Last updated Friday, Mar. 11, 2011 12:06PM EST
Even as the NHL comes under attack, commissioner Gary Bettman won’t have to worry about lacking support from the board of governors. That is because he quietly negotiated a five-year contract extension last November.
Bettman’s current contract pays him $7.2-million (all currency U.S.) per year and was to end this summer, although the governors may have earlier picked up an option that extended it to 2012. One source said the contract extension was unanimously approved by the nine-member executive committee.
Bettman fights back against critics What will surely fire up the conspiracy theorists, who have been venting loudly on all forms of media following Zdeno Chara’s hit on Max Pacioretty of the Montreal Canadiens, is the identity of the driving force behind Bettman’s new contract. It is Jeremy Jacobs, the NHL’s chairman of the board of governors who just happens to own the Boston Bruins, the team that employs Chara. However, as chairman, one of Jacobs’s duties is to keep the commissioner and the other key executives of the NHL under contract.
Bettman confirmed via e-mail he received an extension. “Old news. I believe my contract has been extended four times, each time with the approval of the board of governors,” he said.
One governor said he believes Bettman also reached an understanding with the executive committee that deputy commissioner Bill Daly and chief operating officer John Collins will also be retained beyond this season. Daly, who earned $1.9-million last season, would only say he does not have a contract.
Jacobs and Bettman are thought to have a close relationship and at least one owner thinks the contract extension smacks of cronyism but some of his fellow governors differ. One said Jacobs made the move with an eye toward the end of the collective agreement in September, 2012.
The governor, who did not wish to be identified because Bettman does not allow governors to speak publicly about the inner workings of the NHL, said the board wants to head into negotiations with the NHL Players’ Association with solidarity on the management front. It does not want any perception Bettman could be a lame-duck commissioner if he does not have a new contract.
However, the criticisms of the NHL by team owners in recent weeks are unusual. The first was Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux, who felt suspensions handed to two New York Islanders players for attacks on Penguins players were too lenient.
On Thursday, Habs owner Geoff Molson released a public letter to Canadiens fans in which the team owner knocked the NHL for refusing to suspend Chara for the hit that left Pacioretty, a Canadiens forward, with a fractured vertebra and a concussion. Molson called on Bettman to make player safety a priority at the annual NHL general managers’ meetings in Florida next week and volunteered to be a leader in the effort.
“I am asking for the support of the 29 other NHL owners, to address urgently this safety issue,” Molson said. “And I am willing to play a leadership role in co-ordinating this group effort.”
There was another letter Thursday that drew headlines and the ire of Bettman, that one coming from an Air Canada executive. The airline threatened to withdraw its sponsorship from the league if steps were not taken to reduce violent hits to the head.
Since Air Canada also is the official carrier for all six Canadian NHL teams and five based in the United States, which brings in more than $20-million a year for the airline, Bettman issued a counter-threat.
“Air Canada is a great brand as is the National Hockey League and if they decide that they need to do other things with their sponsorship dollars, that’s their prerogative,” Bettman said. “It is the prerogative of our clubs that fly on Air Canada to make other arrangements if they don’t think Air Canada is giving them the appropriate level of service.”
Bettman staunchly backed the league’s decision to impose no additional punishment on Boston’s captain, who was assessed a five-minute penalty for interference and a game misconduct while Pacioretty lay motionless, face down on the ice for more than five minutes before being immobilized on a spinal board and taken by ambulance to hospital.
“It was a horrific injury; we’re sorry it happened in our fast-paced, physical game,” Bettman said on Capitol Hill. But he said the decision not to further sanction Chara for the hit during the Canadiens-Bruins game in Montreal on Tuesday was widely praised by the other teams.

The #Canucks have 97 points. 7 clear for the President's, 9 points ahead for the West, 16 points ahead for the division...and 42 points ahead of last place Edmonton.
We have 225 goals, best in the NHL.
162 goals have been scored against us. 2nd in the NHL (Nashville = 1st)
Our goal differential is +63, best BY FAR in the NHL. Boston is at +41.
24.2% means our PP is the best in the NHL.
86.3% means our PK is 2nd best in the NHL (Pens are at 86.8%)
Our combined special teams is 110.5%, best in the NHL. Montreal is 2nd at 104.3%.
Our goalies are in the top 5 for every statistical category except shutouts.
Schneider is a crazy ass 13-3-2. Obviously, I'm not saying if he played 82 games, he'd have the same numbers but if he did that's 59-14-9. (Luongo would be a 50-21-11).
The Canucks have not lost consecutive games in regulation in 2011 and only twice all year (at the beginning of the season). However, during this time, what's everyone talking about? The Canucks are in a SLUMP.
Between December 8th and January 13th, the Canucks were 14-0-3.
Daniel is the league's leading scorer. Henrik isn't far behind. Kesler has 33 goals. A Canucks player is near the top of every statistical category. ...regardless of our D's health and how 3853197 people have played on the 4th line rather than just cloning Tanner Glass.
IN SHORT
Don't give us your silly Flames stats. The Canucks have been doing that shit all year long.
AzNightmare
03-12-2011, 01:22 AM
^ With those stats... it's hard not to be greedy...
I'll admit if Canucks don't win the cup this season... I'll be quite disappointed.
Even if initially, our goal was only to get to the semi finals this season (or maybe make it to the finals)
Seems like all these regular season stats will all be meaningless if Canucks choke when it matters most.
Let's not waste this epic team we finally have.
i personally wouldnt be content with anything below a western conference title.
anything below that is starting to compare us to san jose's post season fail

Torres is gone next year, Sammy gone after next year as well. Our prospects will get a chance but they're gonna have to EARN their way up. Look at players like Zetterberg and Datsuyk, they started off as 3rd liners on Detroit and worked their way up. If Hodgson or Shroeder want a spot on the team, they'll have to start at the bottom. Our bottom 9 guys are quite versatile as well. Manny or Hansen are both capable of playing on the 4th line if thats required.
No need to worry about Schneider. Even after next year he's still a RFA. If I'm Gillis I'd keep him as long we can. If he only commits to a one year deal after next season and Lu is still playing like an all-star thats when I start looking for a possible deal.

I don't get this concern about our propsects BS. Sure we're not seeing them immediately, but aren't our fans glad we're not like EDM, NYI, etc where their rosters are such crap that their prospects almost make an immediate show.
The fact that even a highly touted prospect (like hodgson, shroeder, grabner) don't get recieve a "gimme" spot on the club speaks about the quality of the club.

man... missing the entire game here.. at least it's been ugly so far.
Are you at least listening to it on the radio?
Half a period does not a playoff series make.

Course not........ I just think they are the kind of team that can give us problems.
Attention viewers, please do not adjust your television....... those Calgary jerseys really are that pukey!

Ok so Luongo loses the first two games in the playoffs, we put schneider in net and he plays awesome, do they ride him until he plays a shitty game?
Not sure will Schneider even get an opportunity in the third game.
That'll take a lot of balls for AV to pull that off... although I can see him doing it... maybe.
I have a feeling there's a big enough "anti-Luongo" (and Schneid bandwagon) fan support in this city anyway.
Fans are always pissed off about the goalies in this city.

Clear your cache?
or just try downloading another browser?
or try uninstalling adobe and reinstalling it? Though, i'm not sure if that's the player/plugin they're using?
edit; ok so cbc is indeed using adobe.. uninstall the plugin in your control panel and reinstall it.
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
try that.

Didn't the puck hit kesler when he was outside the blue line though?
And kesler didn't intentionally bring it back into our zone. So shouldn't that have been offside?
