Still can't believe this shit

I think this is a double edged sword here, horton taunted rome earlier, and rome foolishy reacted with a big hit. 4 Game suspension is ridiculous, just shows how buddy buddy the bruins are with the NHL commity. And theres replays of horton trying to get up a few moments after while being forced down by the medical staff.. These guys are pro athletes that take big hits all the time, yet they are treating them like babies..

It was Thornton taunting Rome, not Horton.

Horton was badly injured, regardless if he was capable of moving.
Didn't meant he would have able to stand on his own had medical staff actually let him get up.

Ronin

More NHL rulings based on results rather than intent.

Eager had every intention of hurting Daniel but Daniel got up.

Rome isn't a dirty player. He hit Horton late but I didn't think it was blindside. Horton was admiring his pass. Rome just stood him up. Intention is debatable.

The trash aftermath on the road is disgusting. Why can't people clean up after themselves?
Pretty simple answer for this one... if you're standing there watching the game in a huge crowd with a drink in your hand, what do you do with it after you're done with it? You're surrounded by people, you can't leave or else your spot might be taken... and there are no garbage cans anywhere close by. Do you hold on to it for the next 2+ hours? I was there for the street party on Saturday... after I was done with my drink, I wanted to throw it into a garbage can... but it just wasn't happening. I put it down on the ground beside me, but obviously once you start celebrating, it gets kicked around and it's out of sight, out of mind...

Ronin
06-07-2011, 02:13 PM
Also, the garbage cans are overflowing 10 minutes into any downtown celebration. Sometimes people don't want to litter but because they have no where to put it and because it's so hard to move downtown, they just throw it on the floor.

...other people just litter just because but I'm just saying.

I can't explain why Torres' hit on Seabrook was not deemed worth a suspension, but Rome's hit on Horton is worth four games.

Both were interference calls that were not blindside hits that resulted in a concussion.

Wow, I'm surprised nobody actually brought up this exact point yet.

I would LOVE to hear Murphy's explanation on this one.

it would be easy for him to just say those hits were before his time and that moving forward things will be different. the major flaw in a statement like that would be that you don't set a fucking precedent in the middle of a stanley cup final. if any boston fan wants to argue about this they need to be reminded of what chara did to pacioretty and the league's response to that hit.

what i dont understand is in the dvd they released of good hits to inform teams of what will be called and what wont be called, they had many scott stevens hits classified as legal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mKmYWy-gBU

that was considered a legal hit. maybe a 2minute interference

then this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUYqTE3cnuQ

after that stevens hit kariya even said its his fault for not having his head up. maybe from the other angle it would seem more siimilar to the stevens hit. personally i think the 2 are similar except rome kinda jumped at the last second. which i think would have warranted 1-2 games. oh well id rather have ballard/tanev in over rome

the NHL disciplinary shitheads really need to think about this, had Horton never been injured would they still hand out a 4 gamer in the SCF, yet alone regular season?
Horton's head hitting the ice is what caused his concussion ffs

The whole hitting thing is getting fucking stupid. Even if you hit a guy cleanly these days and the guy gets knocked out everyone is up in arms saying it was a dirty play. The difference between a clean hit and a dirty one is a fraction of a second.

The Scott Stevens hit these days would definitely get you 5+ games at least, regardless of what the NHL says is "legal". The grey area is way too big right now, and eventually no one is going to bother trying to go for the big hit because it's not worth the hassle.

The Torres hit on Seabrook was not a suspension because as Colin Campbell suggested:

"When Rule 48 [Illegal Check to the Head] was unanimously adopted by the general managers in March 2010, there was no intention to make this type of shoulder hit to the head illegal,” Campbell stated. “In fact, at that time, we distributed a video to all players and teams that showed a similar hit on a defenseman by an attacking forward coming from the opposite direction behind the net and stated that this is a 'legal play

What I don't like about the Rome suspension is that Murphy didn't punish the hit, he based it on the injury. As others have mentioned, Eager's hit on Sedin, if Sedin got carted off, Eager as a repeat offender would probably get like 15 games, but Sedin got right back up. If Horton had gotten up, it would have been 2 mins at most.

players know that 9/10 times when they hit a guy he won't get hurt and since the league is only suspending based on the aftermath, the hits will continue to come.

I eat my words, I listened to the statement in the car on the way home.

The argument is weakened. Not a blindside but a late hit.
suspended due to the aftermath

and yes the Stevens hit on Kariya in the early 2000s will most DEFINITELY get someone suspended by today's standards

Imagine this. What if Scott Stevens played today with the technology on gear. Could be worst. Scott Stevens hits are like..say a 18wheeler comin onto u at full speed.

I REALLY REALLY HOPE SHANNY DOES THE RIGHT THING NEXT SEASON. Shanny's a smart hockey man. I trust him to do everyone in the league some good deeds

I still think the hit was fair. It was open ice, the player wasnt looking where he was skating (admiring his pass) and got caught. Rome isn't a head hunter.

All hockey players since first stepping onto the ice at a young age, were taught to keep your head up.

I dunno, 4 games suspension for a clean hit, that caused a concussion.

here's somthing i posted on another forum, i really hate the guys there so it's kinda directed in a negative tone but figure i'd post it up here:

the following received no suspensions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEyR6NTG_IE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAKE27l7ZzA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeZDE9H3_vU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTxme2O33HM

And THIS receives the longest suspension in Playoff history:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUYqTE3cnuQ

and instead of a using a video clip, how about a still image?

http://i56.tinypic.com/ncczh5.jpg

clearly contact is established BEFORE this picture, yet both of his feet are on the ice, weird!

Argue all you want about the suspension, how dirty the nucks are, etc. but if you think 4 games is a fair suspension your day dreaming

also, it's one thing to try and set a new precedent to protect players BUT

A) you do not do it during the 3rd game of the cup finals

B) If this is infact the new precedent, you sure as hell better be consistent with punishment from here on it, or else the 4 games is even more outrageous

there has never been a point until the discipline hearing today where the NHL office has come out and blatantly said that the resulting injury played into the amount of the for the suspension

Any Hockey fan regardless of bias should at least take note of these events, as it is a fucking complete joke how it was handled

not to mention Chris Kelly or w/e his name is coming out and openly saying that he sought out help on the issue from BRIAN BURKE of all people? are you fucking kidding me? consulting a GM that has a huge past with the team in question, as well as a frosty relationship with Mike Gillis and a toxic relationship with Canucks ownership?

what fucking joke, i couldnt care less about Rome, he's replaceable, but the way this was all handled..

Tim Budong
06-07-2011, 04:24 PM
now i want to see a frame by frame of Scott Stevens on Paul Kariya

pretty much the same fucking thing

whatever, the whole thing is settled. I think the Canucks can appeal. Guess the current diciplinary team wanted to make a splash b4 they get replaced. Pieces of shit

Colin Cambells 'behind the net' comment on the torres hit was to point out that even tho it was an east-west hit, behind the net is still considered north-south. meaning even tho torres was skating from one side of the ice to the other, he hit him from the front, not from the side.

i believe under 48, hitting someone from the side (across the regular flow of play) is considered blindsiding. behind the net is not considered blindside.

What's done is done.

Bottom line?

Nathan Horton out for the remainder of series:
17 points in 21 games and 3 game winning goals (2 of those in game 7). He was +11...and had 52 shots on goal. His chemistry with Lucic and Krejci will be hard matched to find from Recci or Senguin.

Aaron Rome out for remainder of series:
8th in ice time amongst our dmen (only ahead of Alberts). It may hurt because he shoots right and doesn't take as many risks as Ballard.

Pissed or not pissed off about the suspension, if someone said the Canucks would be up 2-1 in the Final and after 3 games Horton and Rome both wouldn't play for the remainder...would you take it??

Rome's biggest mistake was that he tucked his elbow in and kept his feet on the ice. Had he jumped 3 feet in the air, there wouldn't have been any problem with that hit on Horton. Rome also came in for the hit way too early. He was at least 0.5 seconds early. Had he waited until the puck was no where near the play, it would have been clean.

Now someone intrigue me. I didn't see this game or hear about this incident, so what was Blair Jones' condition after the hit?

Also the other stat where the team who wins game 1 goes on to win 70 something % of the time and if it's the home team then it's like 84% of the time or something lol.

Regardless what the stats say the Canucks still need to do it and I've been confident the entire year through thick and thin and nothing has changed my mind about it yet. Looking forward to it thats for damn sure.

I'm fine with the other team looking to avenge a huge hit - they'll receive an instigator anyway. If someone decks one of the Sedins for isntance, even if it's completely legal, I'd sure hope someone steps up to send a message.

The Horton hit was a bit late imo, Rome should have received 1 or 2 games suspension, but any dude with half a brain knows that when Rome gets back into the series, the Bruins will be gunning for him and will just be inviting a fight-fest or even worse an on-ice Bert incident.

Disagree completely, the nhl releases a video every year to the teams showing legal and illegal hits to inform the team.Whether it be blindside hits or hits from behind etc etc its on the video. A high percentage of the major Scott Stevens hits are LEGAL in the videos given this year, last year etc including the Kariya hit. Even sportsnet/cbc(cant remember which of the twwo) did a interview with nhl about it when the rule first came into effect and they said ok

The Torres hit on Seabrook was not a suspension because as Colin Campbell suggested:

Quote:
"When Rule 48 [Illegal Check to the Head] was unanimously adopted by the general managers in March 2010, there was no intention to make this type of shoulder hit to the head illegal,” Campbell stated. “In fact, at that time, we distributed a video to all players and teams that showed a similar hit on a defenseman by an attacking forward coming from the opposite direction behind the net and stated that this is a 'legal play

What you are failing to realize is that they have this special provision for behind the net just to make that area akin to the open ice.

Which means the two hits take place in areas on the ice that are equally weighted in terms of allowing hits to the head.

After watching the Bure interview, I find it amazing that someone that fucking good can retire, then not put on the skates for 6-7 years and counting. If you're a pro hockey player, prior to your retirement, hockey is you life!

Wearing a Canucks jersey in Boston is just stupid. You can get away with that in places like San Jose or Nashville, but forget about going to places like Boston or Chicago like that. You're just asking for confrontation.

By all means go see your team play live, but leave the jersey at the hotel.

I know you are just asking for trouble when you wear the opposing team's jersey during their home game, but I expect the basic human decency to not be accosted as a result of it.

Me wearing a Canucks jersey suddenly doesn't make it okay to be verbally and physically assaulted as a result.

Because at the end of the day, we are all hockey fans. Lets all respect each other as such.

BTW, this post isn't an attack on Skinny, I am just making a blanket statement against the select few (Boston and Vancouver fans) who choose to make their team affiliation as a mask for their debauchery.

you shouldn't expect basic decency, that's why you shouldn't wear an opposing jersey ;)

In places like Boston, Chicago, Vancouver, you have beer + strong team loyalty. In places like San Jose and Nashville, you just have beer. That's why it's a better idea to just stay on the safe side and not wear your jersey out, rather than wear it out and then complain when you have confrontations with drunken fanatical goofballs :)

I was a bit disappointed after the previous interview a while ago where he just seemed to not care and was generally apathetic about the game and his career, seemed like he lost his drive to win and just wanted to forget about that past life completely.

After some time though, I have to say I respect him more for this because has been able to retire in peace, know that he left everything he had on the ice, separate himself from the game, and commit himself to his family and life enjoyment now. As opposed to un-retiring and trying to give 1 more push and have a chance at the cup playing a 4th line role or watching from the press box because his body just doesn't have the ability to compete anymore (not now, but maybe 5-6 years ago when he was freshly retired).

Here's to the greatest Canuck in history (IMO) and probably one of the biggest reasons why I first started following the team when I was a kid.

Yes, it'd be awesome to win at home and it WOULD be crazy for the city to win in OT in game 7 but I think the Canucks are more interested in just winning the Cup as opposed to making it an exciting, stroke-rendering, heart attack-causing game for their fans.

lol, I honestly don't care whether it's 5, 6, or 7,
as long as the Canucks are victorious in the end.
It would be much better in 5 or 7 for me.

I predicted Canucks in 5 before the series started though.
And it always makes me happier when my predictions are correct.

I don't mind the "heart attacks" or the rollercoaster rides. That's part of being a Canuck fan,
and why their games are so exciting. And I don't think there would have been a big pile up like we had won the stanley cup
if Canucks just simply swept the Blackhawks. That moment almost made me cry.

That being said, I'll be tearing up no matter how many games Canucks take for this series.

Harper going to Stanley Cup final's Game 4 in Boston to cheer on Canucks

OTTAWA — The hockey fans in Boston will be joined in their home arena Wednesday night by one very prominent Vancouver Canucks fan — Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The Prime Minister's Office announced Wednesday that Harper will travel to Boston's TD Garden to watch Game 4 of the Canucks versus the Boston Bruins.

"The prime minister, as everybody knows, is a big hockey fan," said Harper's spokesman, Andrew MacDougall.

"So he has paid for some tickets for himself and is going to go down to watch the game, and (his daughter) Rachel is going to be with him."

Harper will fly to Boston on the government's Challenger aircraft and return home after the game.

The final series in the quest for the Stanley Cup has created a classic showdown — Canada's team, the Canucks, against America's team, the Bruins.

Let there be no doubt who Harper is rooting for.

"He's cheering for the Canucks," said MacDougall.

Online reaction to ‘beatdown in Beantown’ just as raucous as on-ice action

Boston’s calling it the “beatdown in Beantown.”

The Bruins’ 8-1 Game 3 defeat of the Canucks Monday night has the city’s media and hockey fans abuzz online, labelling the victory “sweet revenge,” “payback” and a well-deserved mauling of the “haughty,” “cheap” and “dirty” Vancouver team.

“They avenged the biting of Patrice Bergeron (Game 1), taunting of Bergeron (Game 2), and the headhunting by Canucks defenceman Aaron Rome (Game 3),” wrote Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy in his front-page article titled “Back home, Bruins scorch the ice.”

Shaughnessy named the moment when Bruins goalie Tim Thomas knocked Canuck Henrik Sedin away from his crease and onto his back as the game highlight.

The lowlight?

Aaron Rome’s ugly hit on Nathan Horton, which saw Norton taken off the ice on a stretcher and Rome suspended for four games.

Online, some Bruins fans rallied behind Shaughnessy with harsh words for the Canucks.

Emetib2010 wrote, “Hey Aaron Rome — you woke the bear ... you should never wake a sleeping bear,” while Lesserperson claimed, “it’s going to be ‘To Kill a Canuckingbird’ for Game 4 at the grave of the Ol’ Garden.”

Many called Rome’s hit a dirty cheap shot; some even referenced former-Canuck Todd Bertuzzi’s brutal hit on Steve Moore in 2004 as more evidence of the team’s lack of class.

But several Canucks fans fired back.

Tojalams wrote: “Wow, a little different when the shoe is on the other foot isn’t it?” and went on to point out the Bruins fans’ hypocrisy $— just three months ago Boston’s Zdeno Chara hit Max Pacioretty, who flew into a stanchion and was taken off the ice with a broken neck.

“When a goon intentionally tried to hurt Pacioretty with a dangerous, late, illegal interference play, you all dismiss it as ‘hockey play’,” tojalams added.

Others were more apologetic, saying both Canucks and their fans felt bad about the hit and hoped Horton would recover quickly.

Meanwhile, The Boston Herald’s Steve Buckley took just as hard a line at the National Hockey League as at the Canucks in his column “Tooth hurts: Blame NHL; Point finger at league for ugly hit on Nathan Horton.”

Buckley wrote the NHL was just as culpable as Rome for the hit because it has failed to police other similar incidents.

Many fans echoed Buckley’s sentiment, claiming the NHL could have prevented Horton’s injury.

Hippydippy wrote, “Cheap shots need to be addressed,” while Viagra wrote, “The NHL has let this series get out of control.”

Despite all the smack talk, many Bruins fans encouraged their team to stay classy and keep their momentum going into Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final at TD Garden in Boston Wednesday night.

With Bruins fans breathing sighs of relief after Monday’s game, the night told a different story for Canucks fans — who, until now, were enjoying a comfortable lead over the Bruins.

While Canucks fans in Vancouver watched on tenterhooks as their team suffered sound defeat at the hands of the Bruins in Game 3, some of their brethren in Boston were suffering a much worse fate.

“It was awful,” said New Yorker Erin Kilcullen.

The 23-year-old, who has been a Canucks fan her whole life, scrimped pennies together to afford to see her favourite team play in Boston Monday night.

Kilcullen, her boyfriend and her father attended Game 3 at TD Garden and said after the terrible she’d never go to another game in Boston in her life — even though she now lives only two hours away in Connecticut.

Things were friendly at first, but as the game progressed, Bruins fans got downright nasty.

“After the hit on Horton, it totally changed,” she said. “Everyone was booing and [the section] was calling me the Canucks bitch.”

After the second finger-bite taunt from Milan Lucic, Bruins fans followed suit and tried to stick their fingers in her and her boyfriend’s mouths, Kilcullen said.

“My dad doesn’t get angry easily, but he was upset at that because it went on for so long.”

The worst display, she said, was when a Bruins fan peed on the back of her boyfriend’s legs in an arena washroom. Luckily, other Bruins fans helped him clean up and apologized for the incident.

Post-game, fans jeered and taunted Canucks fans and chanted “F—k the ‘Nucks.”

“It was pretty hostile,” Kilcullen said. “We literally just ran to our car and got in.”

“This makes me want to go to Vancouver to watch the games now.”

She noted about half of Bruins fans were sympathetic and respectful to other Canucks fans, and not everyone was mean-spirited.

Charlie English, an Edmonton native and huge Canucks fan, relayed a similar experience.

Though the night started off well, English said after the Horton hit, things got ugly.

“The atmosphere completely changed from electric passionate energy to aggressive passionate energy,” English said.

He said though he’s six-foot-two tall and weighs 100 kilograms, he still got taunted by Bruins fans as he made his way home. One even offered a cab driver $100 to run him over.

He also heard anti-Canucks chants and said vendors were already selling “F—k the ‘Nucks” shirts on the street.

But, like Kilcullen, English said the majority of fans were more than decent.

“It was awesome to cheer with, against and converse with [them],” he said.

Several more who attended the game in Boston spoke out about their experiences online.

On the wall of a Facebook group called ‘Canucks Fans in Boston for Stanley Cup Final’, several fans wrote about beer, mustard or ice cubes being thrown or poured on them while others said they were targets of racist comments, spit at and flipped the bird.

A handful said they would be filing complaints with the Boston Bruins’ fan relations department.

But still others said their experience was, on the whole, positive and that a few bad apples weren’t representative of the bunch, who were largely good-natured and well-behaved.

For Vancouver’s spandex-clad Green Men, the crowd at Monday night’s game was mostly easygoing. But some fans weren’t as happy to see green.

“There were probably about 90 per cent of people who were really cool,” Green Man Sully said. “About 10 per cent of people were stubborn and a little too inebriated, swearing at us.

“It was a little uncomfortable for us,” he said.

But Sully and Force, Vancouver’s dynamic duo, are gearing up for another night at the TD Garden tomorrow night, where they hope to see the Canucks rebound from their Game 3 loss.

“Whatever happens next game is going to decide a lot of things,” Sully said. “I thought the Canucks, from minute one, would do this in five games. I think that’s still pretty valid.”

when people say boston is hostile, they're referring to their hockey crowd...
ie. if you wear an opposing teams jersey, you will get heckled, razzed, beer thrown on, pepper, peanuts, pushed, etc.

What's with the lackluster powerplay. Our PP just died.

On that delayed penalty, when Luongo went to the bench,
was worried that the pass that missed everyone was going to head into our own net.

MG1
06-08-2011, 05:06 PM
I don't know if you're watching the same game as me, but it's been Boston that has been carrying the play.

The Canucks are barely hanging on. If we lose this one, the series is going their way. Boston has stepped it up and has surpassed the Canucks in just about every facet of hte game. The Canucks are a beaten up team right now.

Seen this too many times over the 40 years. I keep thinking this is a different team, they will bounce back. I'm not so sure.

Not even gonna comment on Luigi. He's our goalie and nothing, barring injury, is gonna change that. I wish he'd play at least up to par with Thomas.

Thomas>Luongo.

But what are you going to do? Just pray the situation turns around - somehow.

Boston>Vancouver.

That's what it looks like right now.

Needs to keep it simple and just chip it up the board or pass it.

spoon.ek9

you have to give credit to the way boston has defended against our powerplay. it's not purely because the canucks aren't doing shit. but of course we need to figure this out and get the PP back on track.

but hey, we're in the finals and next game is at home. i said it before and i'll say it again: if the canucks play a good game and still end up with a loss i'm okay with that. so long as it's not another blowout and complete loss of composure, there will be positives to draw from this game. right now the canucks are still a tad apprehensive. we need a couple of goals to regain some confidence.
