Ya - we were a bit of a joke for a while. Even earlier this season, we were considered quite an overated team - but I don't think that's the case anymore. We've worked hard for a few of the wins, and people are noticing.

Too bad Lu didnt stutter out of the gate statistically. He's been incredible in 2011. Oh wells.
So how bout another come from behind by 2 goal victory tonight. Canucks always find a way to win. We're experiencing something special. I wonder if we're taking this season for granted.

It's a great time to be a Canucks fan; the present is arguably better than those 2-3 years we had in the 90s when we were tearing up the Smythe Division with Pavel, Linden, Captain Kirk, Courtnall, Ronning, etc. But, let's face it: this team will be judged on how well it does in the playoffs. I think that at minimum, this team will need to reach to the Conference Finals to silence the doubters and the trolls.

This is a great article by Ed Willes.
This offseason the Vancouver Canucks expended considerable effort, to say nothing of the expense, to assemble a group of six defencemen that they felt would be among the best in the NHL.
That, at least, was the theory. And after five months and 72 games, that’s still the theory because — due to unforeseen circumstances, mostly to do with broken feet — the Canucks haven’t had their top six together.
They haven’t, come to think of it, had their top eight together and have struggled to put their top 10 together on some nights, all of which makes their position atop the NHL standings all the more remarkable.
Kevin Bieksa, he of the metatarsal issues, was asked if the blueline fraternity is looking forward to the day when the top six are in the lineup together.
“Who are the top six?” he answered. “I’m not sure any more.”
We know the feeling.
Wednesday night at The Rog, the Canucks topped a dispirited Colorado Avalanche team 4-2 with a version of their best six which has been intact for a dozen games or so. By the standards of this season, that might make this group the longest-serving blueline the team has employed, and they’ve been both reliable and productive in their limited time together.
For the Canucks, that’s the sort of good news. The more interesting development, however, awaits in another week and, if everything goes according to plan, another three weeks when the troops might be fully restored.
All season long, Canucks’ fans have fantasized what the defensive corps would look like with a full complement.
They’re finally close to finding out.
Bieksa, who’s missed 14 games with a fractured foot, is close to returning. We know this because, when he was asked on Wednesday when he’ll be back, he became vague and evasive.
Some time during next week’s road trip is a good guess.
Barring further catastrophe, that will also make Alex Edler the lone holdout from the core six and Edler has started off-ice workouts and skating on his own. Again, if it all goes according to the script he’ll be back for the start of the playoffs, and that’s when things will get interesting.
The wondrous thing about this Canucks season, after all, isn’t their first overall placement in the league. It’s they’ve forged their record using 13 defencemen — remember the Lee Sweatt era? — and with serious injuries to five of their projected top six. To date, Christian Ehrhoff is the only one of that group who’s escaped a prolonged stay in the infirmary. Dan Hamhuis has missed 14 games; Bieksa 15 in total; Keith Ballard has missed 18; Edler is 23 and counting.
Sami Salo, for his part, is a whole different category, but it’s also Salo’s return to live action that has sparked the imagination of the faithful. The Canucks now contemplate a blueline where five of their defencemen could play in the top four on any team in the league, and Ballard should belong to that group.
Now, try to envision what this could look like. You’d have the shutdown pair of Hamhuis and Bieksa. You’d have Edler and Ehrhoff driving the offence — and making the Sedins that much more dangerous. You’d have Salo, who might be the best all-around player of the lot, available for any situation.
It would also mean Ballard or Aaron Rome or Andrew Alberts would be the sixth guy with the odd men out acting as insurance. Taken collectively, that’s a formidable group. It’s just that the Canucks haven’t seen anything close to it since the start of the season.
Wednesday night, for example, rookie Chris Tanev played his 26th game with the big club and Rome, who was supposed to be in tough to make this team, continued to play top-four minutes, logging over 20 minutes of ice time.
This was the same group, with Salo, Hamhuis, Ehrhoff and Ballard, who’ve carried the load during the team’s current seven-game winning streak and were good again against the Avs.
So how much better could they be with the full cast? It’s hard to say, but you know the Canucks are dying to find out.

Vancouver Canucks' centre Manny Malhotra suffered an eye injury on Wednesday night and the damage may be worse than expected.
Malhotra underwent surgery after the game and will see a specialist on Thursday to get an update on his condition.
There are no broken bones but there is concern about his vision.
During Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche, Malhotra was struck in the eye with a puck and left a trail of blood on the ice as he was ushered to the dressing room.

Canucks with and without manny are two different teams.
Remember how everyone raved bout Chicago winning last year because of how effective their 3rd and 4th line was?
Or in 2007 with Anaheim's toughness and the best shut down checking line?
It's the main thing that we've been missing and manny is a huge part of it.
Posted via RS Mobile (http://www.revscene.net/forums/announcement.php?a=228)
Our faceoff's are one of the big reason's we're winning. Gaining that control from when the puck drops makes a world of difference.

A great team is what wins a cup. As great as an addition Manny was to this team, the biggest additions are Hamhuis and Ballard. We played the playoffs last year without a shut down d-man (Mitchell was out) but we got that this year in Hamhuis. I strongly believe Higgins/Lappy will fill in nicely for Manny.
quality 3rd and 4th liners are what win cups, not 2nd and first liners playing extra minutes.
this. in tight games you need the unexpected goal from your 3rd/4th line not only is it needed in the playoffs but the momentum the team receives from the play of the bottom 6 is huge. look over years and the players who truly helped out their teams and remember playoff hockey is always playoff hockey its never the same as regular season. your top players cannot be overplayed as its simply too physical and will break them down. keane, draper, maltby, madden, pahlson, recchi, talbot etc etc. these are guys who may have been insignificant during the regular season but are gems in the playoffs.

Of course you need good 3rd and 4th lines. I'm just stating the loss of Manny isn't as significant as people might suggest. Our bottom 6 still has Hansen/Torres/Higgins/Lappy, they're all fast and responsible on the defensive side. People seem to think Manny's the sole reason why we're #1 in the league. He's a big help but IMO its more of our depth on D then his addition to the third line. I'd even go as far as saying Hansen is our best bottom 6 player.
If you asked me last offseason, in which area on our roster did we lack in order to advance past Chicago? 3rd line centre or shutdown d-man? I'd take shutdown d-man everytime.
I'm just saying with Edler coming back, no need to panic. This is the deepest team we've ever had even without Manny.

^No one is writing this team off, but some people seem to think that Manny isnt a big loss but he is. When u have ur 3rd line center being the 2nd best faceoff man in the league it will hurt that 3rd line. Imaging losing those 3,4,5 faceoffs in the defensive zone in a game, any one of those could easily end up in the back of the net. Our PK is phenominal this year, and Manny has something to do with it. Im just talking faceoffs here, and Manny brings other things to the table here.

Manny wins faceoffs. Hansen/Torres/Higgins/Lappy don't (well not as much as him). What does that do? It gives you possession to send the play the other way or keep the play going in the offensive zone.
We have such a great PK cuz of the addition to Manny. I agree he's not the sole reason, but he's a big reason why. He helps take heat off of Kesler, in which we don't need to lean on him as much and it's more of a group effort.
Manny's skill on the faceoff has helped Kesler be the player he is this season. It's allowed Manny to take over that shut down role more and allowed Kesler to show off his offensive prowess.
It sucks especially when you have Raymond filling in that void to be the 3rd line center. How many faceoffs you think he's gonna win for us? What about now having Hank taking faceoffs on the PK?
I hope that Manny comes back asap because to me he's a BIG part of the puzzle we were missing the last two seasons.

A lot of you will say the biggest addition to our PK is Manny, well I disagree. Hamhuis is the biggest addition. He's that shutdown d-man we were missing last year (Mitchell injured).
Winning FO's is a great advantage but it's not like we're going to lose every draw on the PK without Manny. Kesler is no slouch at taking them. I have no idea why you think Raymond will be taking draws.
A lot of you will say Manny's our best bottom 9 forward, I'll have to disagree again and say Hansen is our best bottom 9. His tenacious forecheck and defensive awareness makes our 3rd line so difficult to play against. No knock on Manny but Hansen is what carries that line.
Kes was our 2nd line centre last year, still is. On pace for roughly the same amount of points. You're giving Manny too much credit.

So are all these matchup preferences based on game entertainment value,
or afraid of Canucks choking in first round?
Beating the Blackhawks, despite being a different team, will totally boost the team.
Beating the city that plays that damn annoying song everytime they score.
It's still the same city and crowd, and Kane and Toews is still there.
I believe it's worthwhile. A loss is a loss, whether to another team or to the blackhawks for the third straight year.
I'm expecting Canucks to go all the way this year.

As much as I'd love to beat Chicago (en route to winning the Cup), Chicago has the psychological edge over us. Sure, we may have the "better" team, but you can't deny that in the back of a Canuck player's head, he may be thinking "damn, we lost to these guys two years in a row". You can't measure these intangibles and what effects they have, but they exist.
On the flip side, imagine what's going through the minds of the Dallas players after we beat them by a combined score of 20-5 over 4 games this year?
But if we beat Chicago in any round this year, then there's no stopping us!

I just want a cup and if we get the easiest route to do it, then its all good with me. You gotta win 16 Games to win the Cup, how u do it, or who u beat doesnt matter.
Pretty good video coming into the playoffs with the chance of playing chicago again..

Does anyone know if we have the cap space to call up Cody? I would think that he would be a pretty good choice for 3rd line center.

We should cause I think they put Manny on LTIR right away. Pretty sure there's lots of room under the cap right now.
