i doubt we'll land filatov for bieksa.

Something tells me we'll be getting draft picks for bieksa, nothing note worthy if we're planning to re-signing a couple of our RFA's.

I dont see why evereyone is in a rush to deal bieksa.

do people not remember what happened to our D with injuries?
to be honest, i dont see a problem with us have 6 top 4 Dmen
yes, it puts us in a bind cap wise, but having bieksa playing bottom 2 minutes might make him a little but more effective. If his plays get better bump up to top 4 minutes

plus having a stacked D means luongo wont be working as hard to make saves

Trading Bieksa is a necessity, not an option. We have $2.6m cap space left to sign 4 RFAs including Raymond.. you think that can be done? No way.

I still think Gillis should have thrown the same deal he gave Maholtra in an offer sheet to Ladd. If Ladd accepted the Hawks would have matched it but then they would have been stuck with Ladd for at least a year since you can't trade a player for a year after you match an offer sheet. It would have been a great way to mess the Hawks up cap wise. If the Hawks didn't match we would have got Ladd for the same price as Maholtra and it would have only cost us a 2nd round pick next year.

ladd doesn't play center and doesn't take faceoffs.
and if we throw an offersheet at ladd, they're definitely throwing one back at raymond for 3.5m+ (supposedly weak draft next year), while we're trying to fit him for 2.5m.

...or the Hawks let us have him and we give up a draft pick.

And there's no way the Hawks would be putting out offer sheets...they don't have the money. We'd just let them have Raymond and they'd be fucked.

LOL, no they wouldn't. Two problems with your scenario, one Chicago doesn't have 3.5m to offer to Raymund and second they'd have to give us a 1st and a 3rd round pick to do that. I'd take Ladd over Maholtra anyday of the week. We have a 3rd line center as far as I'm concerend and his first name is Cody. I'd take Ladd at 2.5 for 3 years over a 30 year old Maholtra any day.

It's a mute point anyway since Ladd is no longer a Hawk and we've already given our money to Maholtra. I was just saying it would have been a great way to really fuck them over. It was a perfect storm since they were up against the cap and either would have had to give him a way for almost nothing or sign him and be stuck with him paying more then then they wanted to pay, lose lose for them and win win for us either way.

That would've been a slick move on Gillis' part if he pulled that off but I'm very happy with the signing of Malhotra. Since he said it himself he'd be fine playing either centre or wing, this gives Hodgson and Schroeder time to adjust to the NHL level without all that pressure. Instead of rushing our prospects, we let them grow and mature at their pace. It's the proper way to build an NHL franchise and I'm glad we have Mike Gillis as our GM.

Bieksa for Filatov would be highway robbery, I doubt Columbus' GM wants to lose his job. Adding Filatov to our prospect pool with Hodgson, Schroeder, Schnieder, Shirokov, etc would be surreal.

Kubina signs a 2 year deal worth $7.7 mil with the team he won a cup with

Was listening to the Team1040, and someone mentioned how the Canucks now lead the league in number three defensemen...Hamhuis would be low on the depth chart on Chicago and was in Nashville as well. The Canucks don't have a true number 1 dman, but good depth I'd say.

Hamhuis isn't Duncan Keith...that guy is amazing...but he's as good as Seabrook I think and Brian Campbell is LOL.

Hamhuis is a #2 D-man in that he's not as amazing as Keith, Doughty, Mike Green, etc...we don't have a star but our defense is full of guys you'd actually want on your team...no pluggers apart from Aaron Rome...and he's not bad either. Aaron Rome would be a top 4 on a team like Columbus or Tampa.

you have a point with perfect storm comment, but again ladd isn't a center and doesn't take draws.
you really think our rookie center is going to be able to come in and immediately help us on faceoffs? even crosby was abysmal on draws in his first season.
and again with the versatility of malhotra, you give hodgson some experience there and still know that there's a veteran shutdown presence every night.
i'm sure MG looked at the options and realized a strong centerman will help us a lot more than revenge on a team that beat us twice, a team that is completely stripped down anyways.

hamhuis gets 9m in signing bonus!

for those wondering, this is from capgeek twitter:
Signing bonuses: The player gets his signing bonus cash as a lump sum (often on July 1) instead of spread over the season.
Cap hit = (total base salary + total signing bonuses + total performance bonuses) / contract length.

Bad attitude? Try reading some of his interviews. He was loaned off to CSKA Moscow last year because he barely got ice time due to Hitchcock and he simply asked the GM if he could play one more year in Russia to further his development. He didn't demand or request it, he simply asked and the GM agreed with him. He's got loads of talent and has said in interviews he is playing in North America this year no matter what. All of that aside we're not getting Bieksa for him. Filatov is worth way more then a overpaid mistake-prone #4-5 d-man which is exactly why Columbus asked for Ehroff for Filatov.

islanders will be bankrupt before they have to payout any long term contracts

Their owner Charles Wang is loaded, not happening. Atlanta offered Ilya the same contract 100 mill for 10 years, he didn't accept that one. Don't see him accepting this one either.

He didn't do much in New Jersey?? I disagree

Last season he had 41 goals and 44 assists for 85 points in 76 games.

In 27 games with the Devils he managed to go plus 9 and had 10 goals 17 assists (point a game player).

In the playoffs he got 2 goals 4 assists in 5 games for the Devils. Everything was their in New Jersey except chemistry. That would have come with time. He was there a few months.

know of any other player that has scored 40+ goals in his entire career so far except 2 seasons? not that many players in the league will provide that many goals consistently. however, i wouldn't pay that kinda money for kovy either just because he takes selfish penalties, not that great in his own zone and not physical enough. What was apparent in NJ was that he couldn't play a team game which IMO should've sunk his stocks quite a bit

I agree, they are close and they will compete for a playoff spot but thats about it. Unless their forwards take a huge step next year they do not have any consistent scoring throughout their lineup and the goal tending needs to get better too.

He ain't going to LA boys

The Los Angeles Kings appear to be out of the Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes.

Los Angeles general manager Dean Lombardi said Sunday, “We took our best shot to meet his needs and the team’s.”

But the highly sought-after free agent forward, who was traded to the New Jersey Devils in February from his longtime home in Atlanta, turned down the Kings’ offer.

Bernier. During the playoffs they were saying that Bernier is the guy the Kings want as a starter.

And from June 30th...

Teams Canada: Canadiens, Canucks in best shape heading into UFA day

Vancouver Canucks Last, but certainly not least, the Canucks can claim the title as Canada’s best team (although don’t expect Canadiens fans to agree). Once RFA Mason Raymond(notes) is re-signed, Vancouver’s top two lines are in good shape. Could they use another scorer to take the heat off of the Sedins? Of course, especially if they want to keep pace with the West’s best. But the Canucks are more likely to get help for the third and fourth lines, and maybe a defenseman capable of stepping into the top-four. Vancouver has nearly $10 million to spend, and look for GM Mike Gillis to do what he can to help his club get past the team’s playoff hurdle that is the Chicago Blackhawks.

Kovi played fine with the Devils. People are saying he didn't do much. He had like 3 months with them??

He's a good team guy from what I've read from different people. Although Russia sucked balls at the Olympics, he was the guy that closed the rift between Malkin and Ovechkin. He apparently brought both sides together sat them down, got the vodka rolling and that was it, water under the bridge.

With Brodeur in net, although he may be on his decline, I think the Devils will be one of the top 5 teams in the East next season. I'm glad he's not coming to the West.

I don’t know who I’d take, but I think I would lean towards Parise for the reasons others have mentioned.

To play devil’s advocate :rofl:though, Parise and Kovalchuk both have similar international hardware, so you can’t really say one Kovalchuk hasn’t won anything.

Parise has:
Gold – World Under 18
Gold – World Juniors
Silver – Olympics (scored the tying goal to send it to overtime – very clutch)

Kovalchuk has:
Gold – World Under 18
Silver – World Under 18
*2 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze – World Championships
Bronze – Olympics

*Granted the World Championships is a shit tournament.

But yeah, Parise would come cheaper, and is a two way player and his dad was Canadian

I like Modano, he was one of my fav players growing up, but speaking as a fan of his, i would ask him to please retire. I truly hate it when great players overstay there welcome and become a shadow of their former glory. I don't want to see you play 6 mins a game, play on the third or fourth line getting 20 points a season, I don't want to remember you that way nor do i want others to remember you that way.

I can understand why he wants to play on and i know it's not for the money, but as a fan, spare me the anguish, you're too good to be a role player. It may be already too late, but follow the footprints of Joe Sakic, John Elway, Cal Ripken, not MJ as a washingtion bullet, scottie pippen as a trialblazer.

You have to respect someone who plays for the love of the game. Be it as a superstar, role player or veteran leader on a team. Maybe Modano won't be able to contribute like he has in the past. I can understand a fan's perspective of wanting their favourite player leaving on top, but you can't hate a guy for wanting to play for the love of the game. It's probably hard for them to leave the routine behind (having a couple pops with the boys on long roadtrips, Roxy, and other things).

Fuck it Mike, retire, your going home to this :drool :

haha you ring out Johnson as a 36pt dman when Seabrook is no offensive stud on the backend either. He is a beast defensively though, but the kings also have Scuderi (i think hes there shutdown man?).

So then it becomes Kane/Toews/Hossa/Keith vs Doughty/Kopi/Kovy

Not that large of a margin. Again they are NOT no where close. They are knocking on the doorstep.
But I do agree with you to an extent. I saw the hawks going deep into the playoffs this past season due to Kane / Toews being in ELC....hence being able to sign Hossa and Soupy

I'm not a big fan of corporations feeling they have to have their name on a sporting venue. The buildings of my childhood seemed to have personalities, quirks, etc. Corporate named venues seem to switch names and corporate sponsors so often they can't induce any sence of history or tradition.

I agree, but Aquillini owns the building, so he can do whatever he wants with it.

I don't go to games much these days, but it looks like Rogers will have a presence in all areas of stadium - on-screen, on-ice, and through wireless. Maybe Rogers subscribers will have some enhanced data features on their phones during events?

Why are you people ragging about the corporate influence within the hockey industry? Don't you know that without corporate involvement, NHL would probably revert back into its original 6 platform? Not many cities would have the venues to house their local team.

I can live with an arena even named after Viagra rather than the franchise move to another city that will house them.

On the subject of naming rights...

Adulterer dating site AshleyMadison.com offers $25M to buy rights to new Giants-Jets Meadowlands stadium

Two weeks ago, New York Giants co-owner John Mara said the NFL's decision to award the 2014 Super Bowl to New York might help attract a naming-rights sponsor for the new Meadowlands stadium.

"It can't hurt," Mara said. "This is a positive factor. It makes it an even more attractive package, the potential naming rights part, but that will come."

And now the Giants and the New York Jets, who co-own the stadium, have a company that wants to buy the rights: AshleyMadison.com, which has offered $25 million to buy the naming rights for five years.

AshleyMadison.com is a dating service that caters to adulterers -- proudly. The language on the site's welcome page reads: "Life is short. Have an affair."

AshleyMadison.com founder Noel Biderman told TMZ the site might even up its offer. "We would be pleased to match any such superior offer," he told the site.

The site will probably need to do just that. The New York Daily News reported that the Giants and Jets are seeking about $20 million per year for the rights.

Before the lockout, when the same handful of teams were winning cups, I would have picked any team which had a high priced cup winning goalie to contend for the cup in any given year. Now i'm not so sure. And no, I'm not suggesting Nabakov ever won a cup. Perhaps the high priced cup winning goalies are a thing of a past for now since so many of them are getting up there in age but they could be replaced by a new crop of them someday.

I don't think they are any better than the previous year. In fact, I think all the other teams got a little bit better except for the blackhawks and the flames. Obviously blackhawks still have their core players so I can still see them competing for the cup again. The flames on the other hand.. .. they will get 10th place if kipper can hold the fort.

I heard a rumour that in conjunction with their 40th anniversary, the Canucks are going to announce having new jerseys for next season.

Don’t know if it’s true, but watch it just be a 40th anniversary patch sewn onto the jersey.

Gillis will be speaking at this event.
