The reason is fairly obvious I think. Someone is going to offer him 3+ and probably at least 2 years if not more. If he signed with Vancouver for bottom feeder money and say he got another head hit his career could be over and all he'll get is that 1.5. If he goes somewhere else and signs a 6-10 million dollar deal over 2-3 years he's got security should his career be over.

Willie is still a top 4 but on the decline, in a very similar situation to what Ohlund was when his contract came due. Look what he signed for. I'd love to have Willie for peanuts but I really can't see it happening unless he got hit in the head harder then we thought and has no sense. As much as we'd love to think Willie would put the team ahead of him and his family the bottom line is he's playing to make as much money as possible as anyone would.

It's not that they don't want him to end his career in Dallas... it's that the team would probably want him to just retire NOW. But if he doesn't want to, suddenly they're the bad guy for not re-signing him, even though he's over the hill and doesn't fit into the team landscape anymore? We don't need Mitchell. It just seems like we do because he left a gaping hole on our D last year and Alberts is a terrible replacement. Ballard and Salo should be a fine shutdown pairing.

Mitchell is completely one-dimensional and can't move the puck. He was one of the biggest factors of our loss to Chicago in '09 with his bad puck moving and untimely penalties. On top of that, he's getting old and his health is a big issue. I also don't think he's well liked by his teammates as he's started fights in practice the past two years.

Mitchell filled a role here but it's just time to move on. We could sign him for cheap and on short term, but I think Gillis, as he should, is looking to push this team over the top and Mitchell's money/ice-time could be better used elsewhere.

Saw John in the evening and he was acting really strangely. I went shopping in the afternoon with the girls and I did turn up a bit late so I thought it might be that.

The bar was really crowded and loud so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk. He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we go somewhere nice to eat.

All through dinner he just didn't seem himself; he hardly laughed, and didn't seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was saying. I just knew that something was wrong.

He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in; he hesitated, but followed. I asked him again if there was something the matter but he just half shook his head and turned the television on.

After about 10 minutes of silence, I said I was going upstairs to bed. I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him deeply. He just gave a sigh, and a sad sort of smile. He didn't follow me up, but later he did, and I was surprised when we made love.

He still seemed distant and a bit cold, and started to think that he was going to leave me, and that he had found someone else. I cried myself to sleep.

If Kevin Bieksa is your 5th Dman, at 3.75, he could be traded to get help up front. Of course, depth has been an issue with our blueline so he might stay. I dont think Bieksa is really high up on the trade priority for the canucks, or the asking price is too high for him.

Bieksa gives the puck away as bad as Edler does, his "risk" taking when pinching in has been a liability all season long. the so called "shut down" he brings has been lackluster for 2 seasons now as well.

HOWEVER, with that said, I honestly do not mind him staying with the squad as the 5th option.

i usually agree with u alot, but RJ was overrated in a big way. He was only good at Faceoffs and Blocking shots. This guy would never have the puck and would constantly chase the puck around.

no we're not, but at the very least things are looking up. BB still has some tinkering to do and now with gonchar in ottawa and paul martin gone, kaberle becomes more desirable to teams needing a defenseman. i've read the leafs might be after hamius and they still have the cap space to get kovalchuk (a long shot of course). its crazy to think even before the off season began, if you watch games from the first half of the season, half those leaf players are no longer leafs. I don't know what to expect but so far i'm impressed with what has been done.

the thing is you need a multidimensional player that is good on both ends of the ice not just one. We needed to change our 3rd and 4th lines and this is a start. Don't get me wrong we won't be able to replace RJ but he hasn't been productive enough to keep him.
