Was at aberdeen today, but unfortunately, wasn't able to get there until around 2:30 (I think?)
All I know was that when I started lining up, it wasn't too bad... but then after a few minutes later,
someone told a few people ahead of me that the cut off point of the line up was there.
So too bad for anyone else lining up past that point.

Oh well... autographs aren't a big deal for me anyway. I was more interested in just seeing Raymond
from up close, cause I never saw a NHL player up close like that before until today.

Niskanen wasn't having a good season but he's still young and could break out. I don't know why he was included in this deal. Gologski for Neal would've been a pretty good trade already.

Let's see if Neal tears it up with Crosby as his center.

The stars are not in very good shape financially to begin with so its probably a throw in/dump
maybe the pens and stars agree that Goligoski is worth more?

Hopefully someone picks him up. Kinda pointless to tie up 3 million for a fourth-liner.

If someone takes him, and after the Kotalik move, Calgary can add a pretty big piece.

with kotalik and hagman gone. we should have around 8mill free in cap space...

maybe to bring up more AHL guys

Lecavalier is signed for 7+ million until 20-freaking-20, so no thank you.
Richards is still hurt, not sure if I want to have another Werenka/Langkow. Spezza is interesting, but would probably cost a ton to get.

Sorry, I must've missed the memo where the Art Ross, Richard Trophy x2, Pearson Award, Clancy Memorial Trophy, and Campbell Bowl, and whatever else I'm forgetting... are "good, not great". Oh, and let's not forget about Alex Tanguay's Stanley Cup.

Pre-emptively, you'll probably comment on how that stuff was years ago, so let's just say that this year, Iginla is 57 pts in 61 games playing with Alex "are u kidding me" Tanguay who has 45 in 58 (while making 1.7 mil) and 35-year-old Brendan Morrison, who makes 725,000.

As for Spezza, he's been a huge scorer at every level he's played at, and I don't see how production alongside Alfredsson is a downside? Might that not indicate that he'd be productive with another winger, say, Iginla, on his wing instead?

Who ever said anything about the Sedins? I didn't even bring them up until you mentioned them. Congrats on your fantastic first line, but if you sit there and tell me that Tanguay/Spezza/Iginla isn't a huge upgrade on an already-successful Tanguay/Morrison/Iginla trio, then you're out of your mind.

Incidentally, Calgary's top line makes 9.425 this season, compared to 14.2 mil for your first line.

Anyway, I'll probably get failed for making this post, but whatever. If you're going to slam the Flames, don't be stupid about it.

dont worry, some of these canucks fans think their the best thing since sliced bread...some actually are normal NHL fans.

Every year you hear the same things from them, yet they come up empty handed. This year is especially, since they are in first in the league, they think their gods gift to hockey, and they probably wont get a stanley cup...so they will continue being cocky and arrogant next year, even though they have no championship to previously use as a foundation to start their beaking from, but i guess its cool to come in first in the regular season, than to come in first in the stanley cup playoffs...to each their own.

But that being said, I do concur they have the best first line in the league and they are they favourites for the cup this year...and who knows if they will get it; congrats if they do. I dont think they will get it until they are an underdog. they dont handle pressure overly well(heres where a canucks fan will step in and say 'look at the regular season and having no d and we still win, wait till we are healthy and we will kick ass') unfortunately you dont watch hockey very often....playoffs is absolutely nothing similar to the regular season. i dont know how many times recently that the first place team in the league has won the stanley cup...maybe 2 times in the past 16 years.

I think they need to stop only watching canucks hockey games. I dont know how iggy is only good.......that has to be the stupidest(i know it isnt a real word) thing i have ever heard.

But maybe having the only player in the league to have 12-50+ (11-60+) point seasons and 9(will be 10) 30+ goal season...is just unlucky...well get outside your bubble.

the canucks would fucking drool for tanguay who has 16g 29A for 1.5mil or 1.7mil whatever he is getting paid

And yes, spezza does have a high price tag, but even though you cant deny he is a threat of a player...and i think a nice change of scenery would be nice for him, he would be a great upgrade to the current first line, then we can put morrison back to second line and so on. hence why we got rid of our 4th line center. Morrison has amazing chemistry with everyone and is a great pickup for his price tag.

/end rant

Labatt to be replacing Molson as the in house beer at Rogers Arena starting next year.

Do you have a source for this? I tried telling this to a coworker today and he countered with this story saying Molson is now the official NHL beer:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=553702

The National Hockey League (NHL) today announced a major agreement with brewers Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP) in Canada and MillerCoors in the U.S., awarding flagship brand Molson Canadian exclusive League rights in the beer sponsorship category, including the rights to the Official Beer of the NHL® designation, beginning with the 2011-12 NHL season. The deal will span seven years.

In addition to becoming the official and exclusive beer sponsor of the NHL, Molson Canadian will gain the same distinction for key League events, including NHL Face-Off™, NHL Winter Classic®, NHL Heritage Classic™, NHL All-Star, as well as the opportunity to offer consumer promotions involving the Stanley Cup. The deal also provides the brand with opportunities to engage fans through NHL media assets NHL.com, NHL Network™, NHL Mobile™ and NHL Social. Molson Canadian is currently the Official Beer sponsor of many NHL teams in Canada and the U.S.

While Molson Canadian will be the lead brand on the NHL alliance in both countries, Coors Light will share some of the sponsorship assets in the U.S. and Canada.

"This partnership with Molson Coors and MillerCoors will be groundbreaking for the NHL and our fans," said John Collins, NHL Chief Operating Officer. "Molson Canadian is an iconic brand with a rich hockey heritage and Coors Light has a track record of connecting with sports fans in innovative and effective ways. The combination of unprecedented support of our clubs and TV rightsholders with activation across the NHL's comprehensive portfolio of marketing and media assets will create great opportunities for both brands."

Dave Perkins, President and CEO, Molson Coors Canada, said, "Molson Canadian is synonymous with the game of hockey and was the brand that helped build the tradition of 'Hockey Night' across Canada. Partnering with the NHL reinforces Molson Canadian's 'Made from Canada' brand position, and also reflects our company's desire to help Canadians connect over shared passions and great beer."

"Molson Canadian has a long history of supporting hockey at all levels and will use this platform to build momentum in the States, especially in its core markets where hockey already has a stronghold with fans," said Andy England, Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer at MillerCoors. "And Coors Light, the brand that's all about 'cold refreshment,' will use the NHL partnership to strengthen its presence in NHL markets, especially in regions such as the Northeast and Great Lakes."

The partnership between Molson Coors and MillerCoors on the NHL sponsorship is just one example of the benefits of the U.S.-based joint venture between Molson Coors and SABMiller that resulted in the establishment of MillerCoors.

DOOD, you are in a Canucks thread what the hell did you expect. Of course the majority's opinion is going to be biased! It be the same damn thing if this was a Calgary Flames thread or something.

lol, true...
but still, I don't mind if valid points are thrown out.

Whoever said Iggy was "just good" made a dumb comment.
Spezza has several good seasons, that "one good season" comment was retarded.
He has declined a bit, but none the less, he's still a pt/game player, and dangerous.

I don't know about Canucks cracking under pressure,
a strong still ends up winning the cup.
I believe all the strong teams will have pressure regardless, so it doesn't matter.
This is probably the best Vancouver team in their franchise history, so let's see what happens.

Do you have a source for this? I tried telling this to a coworker today and he countered with this story saying Molson is now the official NHL beer:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=553702

http://www.thestar.com/business/companies/article/941652--labatt-looks-to-lock-up-canadian-nhl-teams

Labatt Brewing Co. has signed up two NHL teams – the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames – to multi-year sponsorship deals worth millions of dollars, a source confirmed to The Star Friday. Both teams are in the final season of multi-year deals with Labatt archrival Molson Coors. It’s the first time Labatt has sponsored an NHL team directly.

http://atlanta.sbnation.com/atlanta-thrashers/2011/2/19/2003725/thrashers-move-a-possibility-soon-according-to-espns-pierre-lebrun

The ownership situation is getting urgent in Atlanta. We were told this weekend that the league is trying mighty hard to find a new owner who's willing to keep the team in Atlanta.

The league's sole focus right now is to keep the team in Atlanta and given its ability to find new owners in Tampa, Buffalo and Phoenix, it's not unrealistic to think the league won't be able to pull it off again. However, should a new owner not be found in the next six to eight weeks, we're told the Thrashers could indeed be up for relocation and Winnipeg would very likely be the new home.

Yes, being a Calgary fan on a Vancouver-based board in a Canucks-named thread, I expect a ton of bias and favourtism towards the Canucks. That's fine with me!

I mean, I welcome debate and banter between Vancouver and Calgary fans. Living in Vancouver, I'm used to it. But like I said earlier to that other guy, if you're going to slam Calgary, don't be an idiot about it.

I'm actually weighing whether I should keep posting in this thread, because apparently just being a Calgary fan earns me fails, cuz as far as I can tell, I made a pretty well-reasoned retort to buddy's ignorant comments and got failed anyway.

It's hard to compare them as players because Linden's prime was years before Iginla. I love Iginla, and the type of player he has - but Canucks love Linden for a lot more than the skills that he brought to the table. That's why so many more people love Linden here than Bure, even though Bure was a much better player.

the whole molson thing is so they can say "beer of the nhl" it doesnt mean each arena has to sell their product just that all advertising the nhl does has to be a molson beer not a different one or at least to my knowledge that is it because the nhl doesn't own the arenas.

This.

Iggy beats Linden's skill set but don't forget that Linden scored plenty in his career as well. He wasn't a 4th liner. Linden was a clutch performer, especially in the playoffs.

Yeah, Iggy is just good, not great. He was "great" for 2-4 seasons. Seriously i love him for his work for Canada, but i mean common, the guy never even had a 100pt season. Yes he did have those 2 50 goal seasons, but those days are behind him. When he's not having a "great" season, he's a joke for what he's getting paid for.

It was wrong of me to bring up the sedins, and yes spezza is an upgrade over morrison, but still i don't see them all producing at the rate of their prime when put together.

Tanguay, jesus, when u give a guy with alright offensive abilities first line minutes (Powerplays too) course he's going to produce, but tanguay at best is a second line player. He was put beside lecavalier last year and shit the bed. To be honest tanguay is very much like morrison during the WCE days, good player but he was just a guy producing beside Naslund and Bertuzzi.

Hockey marathon bigger and better
By TERRY JONES, QMI AGENCY
Last Updated: February 21, 2011 8:42pm

The first three attempts were accepted into the Guinness World Book of Records.

This one? Might be a problem.

Too many men on the ice.

The fourth edition of the World’s Longest Hockey Game, which appeared to establish yet another record at 242 hours at Saiker’s Acres east of Sherwood Park Monday, may have to have an asterisk.

The fact is, the first female ever to play in the game was playing pregnant. Jennelle Trenchuk had a baby on board.

Mind you, she wasn’t hiding it from anybody. The Guinness people will easily be able to spot her on the miles of video tape documentation of the game. She’s No. 15. Her name bar read: “PLUS ONE.”

“I’m very early,” said the fiancee of game inspiration and driving force Dr. Brent Saik. “Seven weeks.”

It seems like this game lasts that long when you play it.

“It’s amazing how these guys keep going, especially during the toughest part between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.,” she said, amazed to hang in there despite doctors orders “to get off the ice when I’m tired.”

Will she do it again? She said ask her in a couple years.

This game is very much like a pregnancy. That’s why it’s not an annual. It takes you a while to recover and decide that it’s worth it to go through all over again.

Like goaltender John Sorenson.

He swore in 2008, after he finished his third one, that no way would he ever come back and do this again.

A 41-year-old city cop, Sorenson’s quote-unquote in this column after the final whistle went was: “This is my last one. It’s so good to be over.”

But there he was posing with the other 39 players for the traditional game over pictures.

“This time I’m retiring for sure,” said a goalie in the game in which the final score was White 2,092, Blue 2,012. and the shots on goal – 11,132 to 7,566 for the winners, give or take a few they might have missed.

“Way too many shots.”

Seven of these guys have played in all four games in which 55-year-old Larry Steel of Sherwood Park was the oldest player on the ice.

“In a way it almost seems to be getting easier,” said four-time player Kevin Karius, the Global sportscaster.

“You sleep two or three hours and go out and play again. After you’ve done this a few times you realize half the battle is taking an hour to dress properly.”

Exactly, said another four-timer, Jouni Nieminen, the hockey foreign correspondent of the Finland newspaper Helsinki Sanomat.

“It’s way better now. The first time we didn’t know what we were doing. We weren’t dressed the way we should have been dressed, didn’t really have the places to sleep, didn’t have the meals like we did this year, didn’t have the massage therapists …”

It’s such a contrast coming off covering the Heritage Classic in Calgary to go to this game, featuring regular Joes and Moes, who raised a combined total of $1.2 million in the first three games, in their attempt to raise $1 million this time for linear accelerator machines for the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary.

The only score that matters is the $870,000 they raised.

I go back to when Saik’s wife, who had just delivered him a young daughter, Angelica, was still alive, diagnosed with terminal cancer.

“You remember when you first interviewed me and I said ‘We’re going for $20,000’ and you said ‘Set the bar high,’ and I said ‘OK. write $50,000?’ ” said Saik.

You’d think this would get old. But it doesn’t. It keeps getting bigger and better … and longer.

In some ways it’s the same story, even the same scene every year at Saik’s NHL-size backyard rink as about 1,000 people line the snowbanks and sit in the stands as the game ends and family and friends end up on the ice taking pictures, exhausted with their very real heroes.

But it’s always a feel-good place to be.

Saik summed it up as he spoke to the crowd when it was over.

“The game never ends. We’ll always be here. This event is going to keep going and we’ll keep raising money, I promise. We’ve still got money coming in so we will be very close to our goal. I apologize to the people who still might have to wait a little longer for this machine, but as soon as we can, we’re going to get it in there.”

Saik then looked around at the scene and laughed.

“We’ll see you again in a few years. Now get off my property. You’ve got an hour before I call the cops.”

They played for 10 days straight with only 40 people. Raised about a mill :fuckyea:

Some interesting depth guys on waivers today, Zherdev, Rivet & Svatos. Kotalik on re-entry @ half the price.

Reports coming out that Zherdev went to his agent asking him to force the Flyers to waive him, he gets waived, bolts out the door rushing past reports with a big smile on his face, jumps into a car and speeds off to pack up his stuff. Seems like this kid has some issues, not wanting to be part of a Stanley Cup contender.

Just got back from interviewing Manny...super cool guy, signed a jersey and snapped some pics. Had a chance to check out the dressing room but I wasn't allowed to snap pics, met Lu, Burrows, Salo and the Sedins. Also bumped into Kesler on the way out to the parkade. Totally awesome experience and I should be getting a media pass next week so I'll have access after the games and during practices.

Kotalik cleared waivers; Zherdev cleared; Svatos claimed by Ottawa; Rivet cleared

Steve Bernier (FLA) on waivers and Mike Smith (TB) on re-entry waivers.

lol FLA waived Bernier, Grabner waived earlier this year. So basically all they got for Ballard and Oreskovich was the 1st round pick.

Yea, it was complicated by the fact that Kovalev had a NTC, so hard to really get any bidding war for him and add to that the Sens owner just wanted to shed salary, Ottawa has been losing money for the last 3 seasons, not everywhere in Canada is an automatic success for pro hockey.

Yea the arena is in a bad location, Ottawa also has very little corporate support/sponsorship, one of the NHL's lowest season ticket bases and it doesn't help that the majority of the people in there have been long time Leafs or Habs fans and have little interest in the Senators.
