Didn't catch the post-game interview but they were asking Smid what Avery's response was. Apparently, Avery said "next shift", which is why Smid started to skate away... then BAM.

Shit is about to hit the fan, I hope major outlets like TSN or Sportsnet don't just sweep this under the rug. Campbell needs to be fired asap, what's also disturbing that's not in the puckdaddy article is if you read through the original source document, certain GMs requesting specific officials to ref their playoff games to Campbell and Campbell suggesting to the head of NHL officiating to do so.
Have Savard emails exposed NHL's Colin Campbell as corrupt?
By Greg Wyshynski
Blogger Tyler Dellow has damned NHL vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell with his own words. For any fan or player who has ever accused or suspected the league's top disciplinarian of being a vindictive, biased model of inconsistency whose favoritism and politics have turned the NHL's supplemental discipline system into professional sports' greatest punchline ... Merry Christmas.
On Sunday night, Dellow posted a few dozen emails exchanged by Campbell with members of NHL brass in 2006 and 2007. They were submitted as evidence in a complaint brought before the Ontario Labour Relations Board by former NHL official Dean Warren, who disputed his termination from the NHL.
The frequently profane communications about Warren's alleged incompetence had been previously reported in the media; the details Dellow discovered in the emails goes beyond that case and strike at the axel of the NHL's wobbly Wheel of Justice.
The Colin Campbell Emails aren't as much a revelation as much as a confirmation for his critics. They reveal criticism of officials who dared call disputed penalties on his son Gregory Campbell(notes), now a forward with the Boston Bruins. They reveal the candid, petty assessments by an NHL executive on the league's on-ice officials' performances.
And, most scandalously, they reveal a long-standing grudge Campbell holds against Bruins center Marc Savard(notes) ... and fans across the NHL are now wondering if that grudge may have come into play when Campbell let Matt Cooke off without a suspension for concussing Savard last season.
Have these revelations damaged Campbell severely in his position as the NHL's disciplinarian? Or are they just a professional embarrassment and a tarnish on his reputation?
(NOTE: Cached version of Dellow's post found here. His site is getting slammed Monday.)
The full Warren case can be found here on CANLII, and it includes emails sent between Campbell, former director of officiating Stephen Walkom, his second in command Terry Gregson (who is now director of officiating) and NHL VP Mike Murphy(notes).
The most damning portion of the emails is this exchange (read them in full here), regarding a high-sticking call in a February 2007 game. The players' names were redacted. From Campbell first; emphasis ours:
To Stephen Walkom/Tor/NHL@NHL
Subject Re: Delayed Penalties/High Sticks 02/#/2007 4:24 pm
A bend in the road is a dead end if you round the corner and Dean Warren is standing there. Your answer re: his high stick calls and the score of the game were horse [bleep]. The 3rd call on [player] was while they were down 5 on 4 and on a def zone face off vs that little fake artist [player] I had him in [city] biggest faker going. And Warren fell for it when he grabbed his face on a face off. Your supposed to see the act, not call the embellishing act. Dean Warren has to go with [referee] There must be a way to get rid of this guy. Is there a way we can tract (sic) and total minors called by referees this year. We could then get the minors they call per game. ... or with 2 [referees on the ice] it is impossible? Warren and [referee] out of [club's] games. Give them to [referees].
The emails were scrubbed to keep the details a secret, but Dellow narrowed them down via the evidence presented and came to a stunning conclusion: The only game that fit the scenario was a Feb. 24, 2007 game between the Florida Panthers and the Boston Bruins.
The only player with three minor penalties in that game? Gregory Campbell, Colin Campbell's son, whose last penalty was a high stick.
The player he allegedly hit with his stick? That Campbell felt embellished as a "little fake artist"? That played for Campbell when Campbell was an NHL coach with the New York Rangers?
Bruins center Marc Savard, according to Dellow.
Protecting his son, lashing out at a player he didn't like when he was a coach in the NHL? Why, that doesn't sound impartial at all!
From another Campbell email in that conversation, now allegedly about Savard:
Re [player]
Colin Campbell to Stephen Walkom, Mike Murphy 02/#/2007 09:21 AM
I know Murph and Kinger like [player] as a player but my view of him is this exactly...he puts his whining ahead of the game. I don't think this is a regular occurrence (.....getting screwed) and .....exploded .........over the disallowed goal. He may be uncontrollable by .............and.................as I think his frustration level has hit a high point. He hates officials as well. He is still pissed off at [referee] for a call he missed in the playoffs years ago as I remember him bugging Murph about it. Let's give him Warren and [referee] than (sic) he will really have something to whine about.
Three years later, the "whiner" and/or "little fake artist" was blindsided by Pittsburgh Penguins winger Matt Cooke(notes), suffered a concussion and Campbell washed his hands of this play:
No intent to injure, said Campbell. A shoulder to the head instead of an elbow, so we'll let 'em skate away without a suspension.
Now, thanks to Dellow, that ruling is impossible to divorce from Campbell's assessment of Savard's character in his correspondence with others, partially basing it on Savard's behavior as a 20-year-old rookie with the Rangers.
What other favorites have been played during Campbell's time with the NHL? Was Campbell impressed enough with Alexei Kovalev while coaching him in New York that this elbow to the head of Simon Gagne went unpunished? We're a bunch of tinfoil-hatters as fans; maybe for good reason.
Savard's one thing. But seriously, Colin: Bitching to the director of officiating over calls made against your son, after meticulously attempting to recuse yourself from all disciplinary situations involving him or his team?
The optics on this bit of familial bias look pretty bad.
Dellow even found another instance of Campbell complaining about a call against his son: Nov. 13, 2007, in which Colin Campbell wrote to Walkom, "90 seconds left and he calls a weak penalty...tripping. Makes me sick." The tripping call, according to the box score, was on Gregory Campbell; Colin Campbell wrote that he had not seen the penalty but heard radio announcers say "it was a bull[bleep] call."
(At least Marc "little fake artist" Savard will be safe from Campbell's decade-long grudge now that Gregory's his teammate in Boston and Campbell passes rulings on the Bruins to others in the NHL front office.)
What these emails offer is a glimpse at the machinery behind the NHL's officiating and disciplinary systems. What Campbell does in these messages -- the vulgar, petty complaints about quality of referees and their actions -- is an accepted part of his gig. Listen to this answer here on "Hockey Night In Canada," during the Alex Burrows vs. Stephan Auger affair:
Since Dellow's bombshell of a post, Boston bloggers are screaming about bias and many fans have called for Campbell's head.
To them, we'd ask: For what, exactly?
Unabashed favoritism? Reputation-based decisions? An inability to rule impartially or consistently due to personal preferences?
You needed an email to validate the obvious about Colin Campbell?
It's comforting when our suspicions are confirmed, and we assume there are more than a few "I KNEW IT!" eureka moments around hockey today. Campbell would do himself and the league good to address the controversial aspects of the emails; hell, maybe release a few more that add context or contradict their main ideas (should those exist).
But the man has given us a dozen years' worth of reasons to fire his ass, and the ones that rise above badmouthing Marc Savard or being a high-profile, micro-managing hockey dad are too numerous to list. As Jack Edwards of NESN wrote in his ode to Colin Campbell back in 2009:
The only person who seems to understand Colin Campbell's pattern of punishment is Campbell himself. The suspensions he hands down are arbitrary and erratic -- swayed by non-evidence, hunch, gut feelings, anecdotes and back-channel influence peddlers -- and they are almost never clearly explained. He establishes precedent and contradicts it. He makes exceptions based on flawed premises and then concludes his arguments illogically and capriciously. No one, no one, knows what is allowed and what is not allowed. It is Dartboard Justice.
Perhaps there is someone patrolling the highways and byways of hockey that has the ability to establish standards of punishment; to draw a clear line that everyone understands; to communicate effectively with players, coaches, managers and fans; and to make the NHL a fair and safe place for the world's most exciting athletes. But Colin Campbell is not that someone.
If anything, this controversy is an argument for someone to dole out the NHL's suspensions and fines that doesn't have history with players or political ties with team managers. Someone who isn't beholden to the players or the teams or maybe even to the NHL.
Wonder what Dean Warren's up to?

Listen turkey. I've heard the GREAT SAVE LUONGOs before. Yes Hughson was the Canucks announcer before Shorthouse. Yes he's a done a great job for us in the past. Yadda yadda.
Regardless, at the end of the day, the way he called that goal to me sounded like he was disappointed the Canucks scored. Which is unfortunate at best.
Feel free to disagree.
For what it's worth, Shorthouse called the goal an "Awful" goal when Raymond scored. Does that mean he was disappointed that Raymond scored too? :troll:

I just like goalies that are positionally sound ones don't play the puck in stupid situations and don't start swimming when they cant cover the puck after the first attempt. Luongos definitely the better goalie of the two atm but I think the way schnieder plays fits the team better.
What's everyone's thoughts on Hamhuis so far? Nothing overly noticeable negatively, but also nothing overly noticeably great.
Valued at $4.5M for the next 6 yrs, I'm wondering if my expectation that he will be the better defensemen over Edler was too much an expectation. (meaning that I thought at least without Salo, Hamhuis will be our #1 D, which right now it seems to be undisputedly Edler to me).

He's exactly as I expected him to be. Nothing outstanding but nothing below average. He got 24 pts last year with limited PP time and thats exactly what he's going to get here as well...limited PP time with Edler and Ehroff getting the PP duties. With Salo coming back expect even less. But we get a defencemen who rarely gets hurt since he entered the league.
He was the 3rd best d-man on Nashville and yes I know Nashville has one of the premier d-men in Weber and Suter but I think Edler is now near the level of Suter and Ehroff is pretty close as well. Never expected him to be our #1 or 2 guy but he makes a solid #3/4 d-man.

I was just trying to make sure you don't jump to conclusion on this guy just because he hasn't done much yet. Kinda like what we all did when Albert first joined the club.
My response wasn't a really response towards your question, it was just a statement to kinda comfort you that eventually he will become really valuable at $4.5M.

Hamhuis may have been their 3rd best d-man, but he also WAS their top shutdown d-man, playing other teams top lines and lots of PK time. I think he should be a good replacement for Mitchell in terms of being a reliable defensive defenseman (with more offensive upside than Mitchell).

Last week, Erhoff and his agent wanted "market value". I like Erhoff too, but he isn't in the same league as Gonchar, Markov, or even Mark Streit (European Ds who are offensive-minded). He's probably good for 40 points a year and he has the same skill set as Alex Edler (although a little less physical), so he should be paid accordingly.
That Ballard contract looks like an albatross now and that will hamstring the team a bit for the next couple of years unless a trade can be made. No D should be paid more than Hamhuis, unless he's a bonafide No.1/2 D (a la Duncan Keith, Doughty, Pronger, etc.) I don't blame Gillis for making the deal at the time though as he couldn't hedge his bets on being able to sign Hamhuis.

Personally Hamhuis has lived up to my expectations. He was just supposed to be a solid D, not some flashy offensive d-man. I'm not expecting him to pinch like Bieksa, nor to try to get random oddman rushes like Ehrhoff everytime he is on ice. As long as he manages to stop the other teams' star players decently well, he's worth the money.

$1.5 seems like a pretty big discount for the canucks organization.
He is still an excellent D-man with a power slap shot, and he is always in good positioning. I think he can fetch at least $2.5M from another nhl team, even with his injuries reputation.
But I gotta agree with you, I would want him to stay for $1.5M each year for the next 2 years.

If he does meet the bonus and the Canucks go over the cap they can carry the extra $1 million over to next year. Don't quote me on this because I'm not %100 sure but I believe Chicago did this with Toews bonus. Also at 35 I don't think Salo can meet 60 games. Doesn't have to be 60 games either it can higher.

Is it just me, or do a lot of d-men play great in Vancouver, and then fall off the map (or at least regress significantly) when they go elsewhere to cash in on the rep they built in Vancouver? Maybe its just a function of guys getting hyped and lots of media attention in a heavy hockey market, kinda like Leafs players getting hyped and then sucking when they get traded to the Flames:rofl:
Happened with Bryan Allen, Baumer when he went to Philly, Sopel when he was traded to the Islanders, arguably Ohlund...
For the most part we've been really lucky at getting guys at the right point in their careers and having them reach their potential while in Van

It's really not just about that though. Edler at the moment is our best offensive D-man but watch each game how many times his bombs don't go through; or are read by shotblockers.
It's something I rarely see off of Salo who can almost always makes the right decision between a one-timer, slap pass, slap deflection, slap-bank-of-the-backboards, of the point. (and that's all in addition to having approximately as hard a shot as Edler)
Edler has begun to start to embody the above player traits but IMO is not quite there yet as Salo when it comes to "play" decision making on the point.

Pretty badass... but Bieksa is still there :(
the only reason he's still on this roster is due to our lack of right handed shots
him and salo are the only righters on D

Dunno how many d-men we have who can finish backhand roof on a breakaway. Probably just Bieksa and Ehrhoff. LOL @ Burrows clotheslining him after the goal.
Geez, Burrows could've injured Salo by doing that! :D
hahaha, the classic salo ball fondle celebration

i'm kind of curious.. let's assume bieksa is expendable once salo returns and salo leaves us at the end of this year. that leaves us with:
ballard, hamhuis, edler, ehrhoff (if he signs), rome, alberts and parent.
they're all left hand shots! who's going to be our right handed shot if both biekshit and salo leave us?

for the win its about 2.05 , 3-1 score will pay 23-1 , and win by 2 goals is 8-1.
If i get all of it , i win about $3300! :D , as long as i dont lose all those bets it wont affect me because i didnt group them, if i did it would be way more than $3300

How Scott Arniel helped get Cory Schneider's career on track
Cory Schneider was picked 26th overall by Vancouver in the 2004 draft.
http://www.thehockeynews.com/imgs/dynamique/photos/original/article_36436_1.jpg
The 2004 draft – a.k.a. Alex Ovechkin’s year – was considered to be deep in goaltending talent. Al Montoya, Devan Dubnyk and Marek Schwarz were all highly regarded first-rounders who went before the No. 26 selection, Cory Schneider.
Dominant at the high school level, Schneider was also ranked 26th in THN’s Draft Preview that year. He had an impressive .956 save percentage and 1.42 goals-against average, but there were still concerns surrounding his game that were quelled by a starring role at the World Under-18 Championship in Minsk, Belarus.
“He is so composed for a young guy coming out of high school,” a scout was quoted as saying in the 2004 Draft Preview. “He does so many things well. We had a few doubts about him going into the under-18s and he just impressed the heck out of us.”
Six years later, Montoya has played in five NHL games, Dubnyk 22 and Schwarz six, leaving Schneider (15) as the only one of the bunch who still carries around the expectation he’ll eventually be a No. 1 goalie in the NHL.
But Schneider’s transition to professional life wasn’t smooth. After losing back-to-back national championship games with Boston College, Schneider embarked on his career with the Manitoba Moose – coached by Scott Arniel, the current bench boss of the Columbus Blue Jackets – in 2007-08.
Through his first 11 appearances, Schneider’s numbers were miserable. A 3-7-0 record, 3.69 GAA and .872 SP ranked him amongst the worst in the league. Meanwhile, teammate Drew MacIntyre was posting wins and coach Arniel was getting fed up with the work ethic of the young Schneider.
“The big thing with Cory is he had great success at the college level and obviously was a first round draft pick and had lots of hype, lots of talk about him being the next up-and-coming top-end goalie,” Arniel said recently. “He came to us in the AHL and I think he kind of had disrespect for the league. I think he looked at it like everything would come easy.”
Arniel said Schneider wasn’t taking practice seriously enough and wasn’t competing for pucks during games – a worrying development at the time. To turn around the bad start to his career, Schneider got a little bit of luck and a lot of good coaching.
After Schneider let in three goals on eight shots and got pulled in a December game against the Lake Erie Monsters, Arniel’s concerns about his goalie hit a breaking point. With MacIntyre on recall to the Canucks, Arniel had little choice but to turn back to Schneider for another game against those same Monsters the following night. However, before he made that decision, he pulled Schneider aside and held him accountable.
“I called him into the office and we had a real good talk about the game,” Arniel said. “I told him about all those things; I didn’t like the way he was approaching being a professional. I threw him back in the net the next night and it was one of his better games.”
Schneider finished the year with a 21-12-2 record, .916 SP and 2.28 GAA, earning rookie of the month honors in March. The following year, Schneider’s GAA dipped to 2.04 as he led the Moose to their first and only 50-win season and top spot in the league. He carried Manitoba to the Calder Cup final where they lost, but earned the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award for AHL goaltender of the year.
After one more season together in 2009-10 on an offensively deficient team that was defeated in the opening round of the post-season, Arniel and Schneider graduated to the NHL. For Arniel, it was a much-deserved first attempt to lead an NHL bench; for Schneider, it was the next step up the ladder to full-time NHLer status - albeit with a lot of work ahead in Roberto Luongo’s shadow to finally become that No. 1 goalie he’s been touted as for so long.
But at least this time, he’s prepared for the challenge.
“He really turned a corner and really became the goaltender we see today,” Arniel said. “It just took a little bit to realize he had to put the work and time in; he’s become a better goalie and I think he’s become a great example of a young goaltender who figured it out very quickly.”

Canuck jokester welcomes Ballard back into lineup
PITTSBURGH - In honour of Keith Ballard rejoining the lineup for a game tonight, after four healthy scratches in a row, one of his teammates had a little fun at the defenceman's expense.
On the wall in the visitors room there often is taped a sheet for players to sign up for tickets for friends or family in the road city.
Among the handful of requests for tickets to tonight's game, someone wrote K. Ballard in the 'donor' column and T. Vokoun under 'recipient.'
"I think it's hilarious," Ballard said after the morning skate.
It was almost a year ago that Ballard, after being undressed on an Ilya Kovalchuk goal, in frustration swung his stick hard, like he was trying to fell a tree, on the goalpost beside Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun. Except unknown to Ballard, he'd actually felled his goalie with a chop to the side of the head.
Ballard skated to the bench and was caught by TV cameras sitting bewildered as Vokoun was attended to, then brought off on a stretcher.
Vokoun turned out to be fine and Ballard was able to eventually laugh about the incident, although to this day he feels bad about the example he set for kids.
So, does he have any suspects behind this morning's prank?
"I have a couple of names in mind," he said.
Burrows?
"That's one of them."
Bieksa?
"That's another."
Kesler?
"And another."

Awesome player. He's not just a great player, he is a great ambassador of the game and our country. I have no idea why people criticize him. He has a lot on his plate, but he handles it so well.
Let's hope he contiues to flourish and not suffer an injury that affects the rest of his career.

I didn't see how it developed because I'm only listening to it on the radio, but it sounds like they need to be reminded about being especially careful to not turn over the puck just as their power play is ending, so that the penalized player doesn't get a breakaway going the other way. I've seen this almost happen a couple times the last few games...
