Here's the best test...NAME A RUSSIAN IN THE WEST THAT ISN'T DATSYUK.

Alexander Radulov. I think he's playing in KHL but he is a potential star. Unfortunately I think he had contract problems with nashville.

Ronin
07-21-2010, 05:23 AM
So he doesn't exactly count as a Russian playing in the west, does he? In fact he's so far east, HE'S IN RUSSIA.

Radulov had 58 points in his best season and like Kovalchuk, he demanded way too much money so he had to settle for playing in a second rate league like the KHL.

Gumby

I just read a reasonable article looking at these monster contracts at http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=328015

raygunpk lists a number of recent front-loaded contracts on the previous page. The reason those were approved is that the NHL thought it would be too difficult to prove that deals like Pronger's or Hossa's "were not negotiated in good faith." It's unlikely that Kovalchuk will actually be playing well into his 40s.

You know nothing about hockey. Please stop talking before I ban you altogether.
Can you just ban him now? Leave him with access to fight club perhaps.

A Russian in the west that's good, besides Datsyuk? Alexander Frolov. 50+ points per season the past 4 or 5 seasons, if I'm remembering right.

Highest total was 71 pts in 06/07.
Lowest in the last 5 years was this past season with 51 pts.

Frolov sucks

Lacks the commitment and attitude needed to be successful. There's a reason why he hasn't been signed yet.

I wonder if a team walking away from an arbitration award makes future discussions with other players come down in price or at least give the team negotiating rights a little more power

The St. Louis Blues re-signed restricted free agent David Perron to a two-year, $4.3 million contract on Wednesday.

The 22-year old scored 20 goals and added 27 assists in 82 games last season.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=328089

I think this signing will help Raymond's case.

Fortunately, if a team walks away from the arbitration award then Raymond's case cannot use it as a comparable. Though I'd still like to know how the eff he got 2.4.

Grabner isn't going to come anywhere close to replacing Raymond's 25 goals.

i beg to differ this statement
Grabner could match Raymond's mark, but Raymond has more depth as a player at the moment, gotta sacrifice to be good, he was on the unfortunate end

i think grabner is capable of scoring more than raymond actually... raymond has been around longer than grabner... but i think grabner will be more consistent and has deadlier shots, and probably wouldn't overskate the puck as much

Raymond is most definitely the better player "at the moment." But it's not like he set the bar really high for Grabner.

Saying that he won't come anywhere near close to the player Raymond is, is a bit too much of a reach there.

To hard to say. Remember that game last year where Grabner got that hat trick.
Raymond better than Grabner only because he's had more time to develop. Raymond in his first year or two was brutal always coughing up the puck and falling down from skating too fast.

Now that Kovalchucks contract is void with the devils, what would it take for the Canucks to sign him? Could we unload a couple big contracts and depend on the younger rookies to fill the roles of players like samuelson, kesler, erhoff to get a shot at signing Kovy?.

Canucks winger Jannik Hansen has been awarded a contract for $825,000 in salary arbitration Thursday.

Assuming the Canucks do not opt to walk away from the award, which they might considering the amount, the contract will bring their cap number to $60,583,000 and $1,183,333 over the salary cap upper limit of $59.4 million.

To hard to say. Remember that game last year where Grabner got that hat trick.
Raymond better than Grabner only because he's had more time to develop. Raymond in his first year or two was brutal always coughing up the puck and falling down from skating too fast.

yeah, I meant he wouldn't replace those goals in the immediate future, ie. this year and likely next. Long term it might be a wash, but at this point Raymond is at least semi-proven, while Grabner is still an unknown.

The Orange County Register is reporting that the Anaheim Ducks are interested in acquiring Canuck defenceman Kevin Bieksa.

It makes some sense. The Ducks are looking a little thin on the blue line -- their top two D-men are Lubomir Visnovsky and James Wisniewski, who will never be mistaken for Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer -- and Anaheim GM Bob Murray and head coach Randy Carlyle both know Bieksa well.

Murray is a former pro scout with the Canucks, while Carlyle coached Bieksa when he broke into the pros with the Manitoba Moose.

The Register reports that Vancouver GM Mike Gillis has also had expressions of interest in Bieksa from a number of other teams, including Los Angeles, San Jose, Columbus and Montreal.

With the recent acquisitions of Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis, the Canucks are overloaded on defence and need to dump some salary. Bieksa has one year, at $3.5 million, left on his contract.

IMO, Raymond hasn't really proven himself yet. He played on the second line with Kesler and Samuelson. He better be getting chances.
But there were times last season where he made mistakes and rode the pine the rest of the game.

Grabner hasn't even been given a serious shot at the NHL yet. So no way we can say who is better.

I remember Mathew Barnaby was on TSN saying how players should stay with the team in which is a good fit for them rather than chase the tiny bit of extra dough on the open market. He said players have ruined their careers because they went to a team where they couldn't adapt as well and play up the the level they were at before, and also live up to the pressure of a big contract.

I think this is apparent in a lot of young players who have that ONE good season (ie. Bieksa, Anson Carter).

I just hope Raymond doesn't make the same mistake but being too greedy.

Edler is one player who got signed the big bucks early on but lived up to his potential though.

Hodgsons cap hit is like 1.3 mill if he makes it

If I was Gillis i'd say look Raymond, you had one breakout season and have been progressing in progress, you've been a good canuck, and I'm sure you love playing in the city of Vancouver and the facilities/attitude this club has towards achieving our goals, we're completely willing to commit to you long term if you want to continue to play here and achieve succes under a workable cap number

2.95-3.65 for 3 to 5 years and if thats not good enough then i'd say walk because we cannot continue to progress without being able to move within the cap, or sign a 1 year deal at 3.5, and go from there, if he's looking for 4+ we shouldnt sign imo

the biggest argument the arbitrator could use is. Alex Burrows is your leading goal scorer, he makes 2mil, heres a pity 2.25 for one year.

VANCOUVER — According to reports out of Finland, Vancouver Canucks defenceman Sami Salo tore an Achilles tendon playing floor hockey and will be out at least three months.

The Canucks have yet to confirm or deny the report, which surfaced on Friday.

The 35-year-old blueliner was limited to 68 National HockeyLeague games last season after suffering an assortment of injuries, including a sprained right MCL, and eye injury, groin and leg injuries.

Salo, who was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the ninth round (239th overall) in the 1996 NHL entry draft, has played 11 NHL seasons with the Senators and Canucks.

In 68 games last season, he scored nine goals and 19 assists

Brunnstrom re-signs with stars for $675k
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=328275

The Dallas Stars have agreed to terms with forward Fabian Brunnstrom on a one-year deal worth $675,000.

The team announced the deal prior to an arbitration hearing that was scheduled for Friday morning. The team had originally tendered a qualifying offer to the forward on June 15.

Brunnstrom, 25, scored two goals and nine assists in 44 games with the Stars last season. He has 19 goals and 21 assists in 99 career games.

The native of Jonstorp, Sweden was originally signed by the Stars in as a free agent in May 2008. On Oct. 15, 2008, Brunnstrom became the third player ever to score a hat trick in his NHL debut in a 6-4 win over Nashville.

Wasn't this kid scouted out by Nonis a while ago and was projected to be some upcoming superstar? He dazzled everyone on his NHL debut with a hat trick then did basically nothing the rest of the season ><

Even with Salo's injury, Gillis can still shop Bieksa. We do have another D signed - Aaron Rome. I feel far more comfortable with Rome as a 5/6 than Bieksa (and that's saying how far I think Bieksa's play has fallen.)

AFAIK, the only right handed shots on our D is Bieksa and Salo

We ship out Bieksa and that means we have no right handed shot from the back end.

As much as I hate to say this ... we need to keep Bieksa until we know for sure when Salo is going to be back.

Either we trade him and go with no right handed shots from the point until Glassman gets back or we make sure we get a right handed shot in return for biekshit.

What's Raymond worth? More than you think

By GORDON MCINTYRE SUN, JUL 25 2010 COMMENTS(3) THE WHITE TOWEL

Going by radio and online polls, a lot of you don't think Mason Raymond is worth upwards of $3 million a season, but that's the going rate for a 25-goal scorer, let alone one who's up-and-coming.

Raymond's agent, J.P. Barry, will compare the speedy winger when Raymond's arbitration hearing with the Canucks gets underway Monday to players making between $3.5 million to slightly north of $4 million.

The Canucks will likely counter as comparibles players earning slightly below $2 million (forget their qualifying offer of $700,000, that's just a formality the Canucks went through _ Raymond made a base of $760,000 last season and $833,333 with bonuses). Lots of numbers will be trucked out, statistics will be stretched like Spandex on Dustin Byfuglien in an effort to fit scenarios they were never meant to fit.
Let's look at a couple of categories, starting with 25-goal scorers.

Raymond tied with Ryan Kesler and 10 others for 47th in the NHL with 25 goals last season. Kesler makes a bigger contribution and has been rewarded with a $5-million-a-year deal that kicks in this season. Taken as a group the 25-goal club, sans Raymond, average $3.84 million when you include Jonathan Toews' $6.5 million for this season and Kesler's extension; the best the Canucks might hope for in this type of comparison is Brooks Laich in Washington who scored 21, 23 and 25 goals the past three seasons and earns $2.4 million.

And Barry recently got a deal for another client of his, Minnesota's 23-goal scorer Guillaume Latendresse, for $5 million over two years (but the agent says Raymond had a better overall year when categories like penalty killing are included). The Canucks, for their part, could point out that Alex Burrows (28 and 35 goals the past two seasons) at $2 million per and Mikael Samuelsson (30 goals in his Canucks debut) at $2.5 million are more valuable players and that Raymond should be priced somewhere in their ballpark.

Raymond tied Samuelsson with four game-winning goals, behind Daniel Sedin (8), Henrik and Kesler (5 each), but then Jannik Hansen had three himself, for what that's worth. Raymond was third in shots on goal on the Canucks, behind Daniel and Samuelsson, but only ninth in scoring percentage (11.5%) among fulltime players. And he was fifth in ice time and shifts per game, behind, yes, the Sedins, Burrows and Kesler.

He's streaky and infuriates when he keeps going back to the chip-it-in-and-race-to-the-corner move instead of taking the puck to the middle, and he sure shoots at the goalie a lot like he's trying to hit a bull's-eye on the 'tender's chest. But Raymond has also scored some beautiful goals, displaying patience and great puck control: His upside is huge.

We're guessing he gets $3-3.5 million, which the Canucks would then get to choose whether to make it a one- or two-year term _ and how to fit it in under the salaray cap, which they're already over. If you're Mike Gillis (or his lieutenant Laurence Gilman) how would you approach tomorrow's arbitration and, given the Canucks cap-space squeeze, where do you go from there?

.

punkwax

all of our other players are taking a paycut from their market values to play on this team.

Sedins, Kesler, burrows.. etc. etc. would fetch more if they had went into the open market. It doesn't make sense why Raymond gets to maximize his value while getting to play in the best team in the Western conference.

I'm sure there are other players out there who wouldn't mind having a small paycut just to play on a better team.

1:42....I see that F-Lames fans have to come into a Vancouver site as there is no real hockey to discuss on the other side of the Rockies...other than the rebuilding Oilers that is.

Great signing and this team stands as good a chance as any of the top 5 in doing some real damage this year. Strong team from top to bottom.

The negative comments in this thread show that not only are F-Lame fans in need of any hockey to discuss (even it is trolling Vancouver sites), school being out drags down message boards a lot.

Go Canucks!

Great signing MG. And as murd0c said, this really is an awesome off season.

NHLPA files grievance e on behalf of Kovy.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=328558

Another chapter has been added to the Ilya Kovalchuk saga as the NHL Players' Association has filed a grievance on behalf of the Russian superstar who had his controversial 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils rejected by the league.

The Players' Association announced their intentions in a statement on Monday.

"The NHLPA has filed a grievance disputing the NHL's rejection of the Standard Player Contract between the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk. Under the terms of the CBA, the NHLPA and Mr. Kovalchuk are entitled to an expedited resolution of this matter. The NHLPA will have no further comment until this matter has been resolved by an Arbitrator."

While the 27-year old Kovalchuk made headlines for signing what would have been the longest contract in NHL history, the NHL made some of their own announcing that they had rejected the deal on the grounds that it "deliberately circumvented" the league's salary cap.

The next step is for an arbitrator to rule on the outcome. Should the arbitrator rule in favour of Kovalchuk and the Players' Association, then the deal will stand; however if the arbitrator sides with the NHL, then Kovalchuk would once again become an unrestricted free agent, allowing him to sign with any team.

Unfortunately for hockey fans, the resolution will not be immediate as there is currently no arbitrator in place. Once both sides agree upon an arbitrator, that person would then have 48 hours from the time that they are hired to rule on the case.

Should Kovalchuk once again become a free agent, he will have no shortage of suitors. The Los Angeles Kings and the New York Islanders have both reported interest in the Russian sniper while SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL have also reportedly offered him an enormous multi-year deal to return to Russia. Kovalchuk has also already turned down a 12-year extension worth $101 million from the Atlanta Thrashers before being dealt to the Devils in February just prior to the NHL Trade Deadline.

The Devils and Kovalchuk also have the ability to re-structure the deal in an attempt to avoid the process.

The sticking point in the process appears to be how front-loaded the contract was. Under the terms of the deal, Kovalchuk was set to earn $95 million over the first 10 years of the deal and then just $7 million over the last seven seasons, including a league minimum $550,000 for the final five years of the deal. Kovalchuk would be 44-years old when the pact was set to expire. To put that in perspective, newly hired Devils head coach John MacLean turned 45 this past November.

The NHL may well be in for a big fight as over the past few seasons they have reluctantly approved long-term, front-loaded deals to Marian Hossa, Chris Pronger, Henrik Zetterberg and Roberto Luongo. It is largely believed that the NHL has decided to take a stand with Kovalchuk as the first shot across the bow by the League as they prepare to re-negotiate the collective bargaining agreement which expires in 2011.

Kovalchuk had 41 goals and 44 assists in 76 games split between the Devils and Thrashers last season. The 2004 Rocket Richard Trophy winner is considered one of the elite goal scoring talents in the league with 338 goals and 304 assists in 621 games.

Originally selected first overall by the Thrashers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Kovalchuk was acquired from Atlanta along with Anssi Salmela and a 2nd-round draft pick for Niclas Bergfors, Johnny Oduya, Patrice Cormier and a 1st-round and a 2nd-round draft pick in 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Great deal by Gillis. $2.6m is what Raymond should be paid. I expected a $3m deal but that would be borderline.

I imagine this deal is Gillis reasoning with Raymond, telling him that the Canucks would probably walk away from a $4m deal if they get a retarded arbitration deal and he'd end up in some shitty team like the Flames or something where he'd have to play with talentless, overpaid bums like Jokinen.

Raymond will still be a RFA at the end of this deal but I think he realizes that he's only been good for one season. This deal is a good raise and Gillis is probably telling him to play hard and if he puts up another two 50+ point seasons, then we can talk about $3.5+ when this deal is up.

Look at Kesler. Everyone was pissed when he got $1.9m for doing basically nothing...he takes a cheaper deal when that contract is up and proves he was worth it all along with his play. Now he's got $5m a year.

you prove ignorance to me so easily...you are unaware how much of a steal joki is at his current price....he falls well within the great price range for a 50 pt player...and everyone knows he is very capable of more....so before you uneducated hockey fans start hating on that deal...maybe you should look at the going rate for a player like that and educate yourself how salary works in the NHL for player rankings.

if 'canucks' fans like you(70% of this thread), were actually very knowledgeable on how deals work and contract prices in the NHL, I probably wouldnt harp on you. but when uneducated fools, start talking like they think they know hockey, it just makes you look foolish. im the one who fails you when i disagree?!?!?....HAHAHAHAHAHA.....buddy look at all the trolls in your own thread...im the only one getting failed here...

people need to accept...i will NEVER leave this thread......FLAME JERSEY ON!

you prove ignorance to me so easily...you are unaware how much of a steal joki is at his current price....he falls well within the great price range for a 50 pt player...and everyone knows he is very capable of more....so before you uneducated hockey fans start hating on that deal...maybe you should look at the going rate for a player like that and educate yourself how salary works in the NHL for player rankings.

if 'canucks' fans like you(70% of this thread), were actually very knowledgeable on how deals work and contract prices in the NHL, I probably wouldnt harp on you. but when uneducated fools, start talking like they think they know hockey, it just makes you look foolish. I guess your okay with that though.

like i said, most the people in this thread are 16 years old...have never played hockey in their life and decided to start watching it so their fathers will love them, but still have no idea what boarding penalty is.

ok there buddy
ill be glad to eat my words if jokinen acutally turns out to be the "steal" people [ or at least you ] claim he is then..
but until then.... ask any professional hockey panel expert....
that was a horrible signing

IIRC, nobody wanted to sign jokinen, they were even talking about it on free agency day. this was the first offer he was given, and of course he took it, probably would be better off in the KHL, where it would be easier for him

It's not as easy as it looks. It's like roofing a shot on a backhand top shelf

Definitely harder than it looks.

70 yards is longer than the length of a NHL arena. Even if Crosby had the strength to make the puck go that length (which he might), the puck wouldn't be 10 feet off the ground (high enough to split the uprights) that far down the field.

how is roofing a back hand hard?
For the average hockey player, it's hard! Should be easy for a pro though.

I lost sight of Crosby's second shot. But the direction looked correct, compared to the first one, which was too far to the left.

Well roofing the ppick is not hard, doing it during a game situation isn't easy. I should have made it more clearly lol.

Lol @ Dan Cloutier. Talk about one bad bounce fucking up your entire career.

Cloutier was a horrible goalie even before that goal. Yes, he got a lot of wins, but that was due to productive offense and the days of the west coast express. That goal he let in just sealed his fate as a goalie in the NHL, if you can't stop a beach ball, you can't play net in the NHL, 'just saying.
