If the playoffs started today, we'd play LA (earlier today...it was the Blackhawks...) and the Wings would play Minnesota. We've beaten LA before and they're not as good as they were last year while we're better than we were. Detroit can beat Minny too.

I'd say Anaheim over Dallas and Nashville over Colorado meaning Vancouver vs Anaheim and Detroit vs Nashville...again, both tilted in favor of Vancouver and Detroit this year...Western final isn't far fetched.

But 41 games to go!

http://www.onionsportsnetwork.com/articles/nhl-to-allow-finishing-moves-in-fights-this-season,18189/

October 5, 2010 |

NEW YORK—In a policy shift that seems to run counter to the recent emphasis on professional hockey as a game of speed and finesse, the NHL announced Wednesday that it will allow exceptionally graphic finishing moves for the 2010-2011 season. "At any point during an on-ice altercation, if one participant in a fight becomes dizzy or dazed, the arena announcer shall exclaim 'Finish him!'; whereupon the victor shall be given the choice of turning into a dragon and biting off his opponent's torso, ripping the other skater in half with a razor-sharp hat, or removing his hockey mask to reveal a fire-breathing skeletal face before burning his opponent to a crisp," the statement from the NHL Competition Committee read in part. "A two-minute minor penalty will be added to the five-minute fighting major if one combatant turns the other into an infant or offers him a wrapped present." The drastic rule change is believed to be prompted by an on-ice altercation last season after which the Oilers' Zack Stortini held up the skull and spine of the Rangers' Donald Brashear, receiving a three-minute standing ovation.

FIRST STAR -- DANIEL SEDIN, LW, VANCOUVER CANUCKS

Sedin led all players in goals (five) and points (seven) last week, helping the Canucks post a 3-0-1 record and claim first place in the NHL overall standings. Sedin recorded goals in all four starts, beginning with a one goal, one assist performance in a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks Jan. 3. He notched one goal in a 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames Jan. 5, tallied twice more and added an assist in a 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers Jan. 7 and recorded the Canucks' lone goal in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Detroit Red Wings Jan. 8. Sedin increased his season points total to 54 (25 goals, 29 assists) in 41 games, tied for third in the League scoring race with his brother Henrik (9-45--54). Daniel has notched points in 18 of his past 21 games with a +16 rating in that span, during which the Canucks have posted a 17-1-3 record.

What We Learned: Here's why nothing can stop the Canucks

At this point it's getting a little ridiculous.

Today is Jan. 10 and the Vancouver Canucks haven't lost a game in regulation since Dec. 5. Since that time, they've only lost three games, one of which was in a shootout. For a team that started the year taking six points from their first seven games, that's an incredible turnaround.

This is a team that's lost five games in regulation since the end of October, and three of those came in a row. They're on pace to pick up 120 points this year, and no one's gotten that many since Detroit in 2005-06.

So you might think that the Red Wings are uniquely positioned to stop them from winning the President's Trophy. They're only one point back of the Canucks (though they've played an extra game). They've picked up 100-plus points in each of the last 10 seasons and will almost certainly do it again.

But here's why the Wings, like the rest of the conference, can't catch the Canucks in the end.

Some might say the real stumbling block between Vancouver and a breezy jaunt to the best record through 82 games is its Downy-soft strength of schedule. To date, it's had the second-easiest set of games out of anyone in the West (oddly, behind Edmonton, which should tell you everything you need to know about how bad that team is).

As of Sunday, teams in the bottom half of the league had 47 points or fewer. Vancouver has played teams fitting this description 27 times in 41 games, piling up 19 of its 27 wins and 41 of its 60 points. That, of course, means that in the other 14 games, against teams in the top half of the league, the Canucks have gone just 8-3-3. That's a somewhat significant dropoff in points earned per game, from 1.52 to 1.36.

Not that 1.36 is bad at all, it's just not surefire President's Trophy stuff. And even that figure is buoyed by the Canucks' 4-0 record against Colorado (48 points), which also gets to play all the terrible Northwest teams.

It should also be noted that in the 12 games it's played against Northwest Division opponents, Vancouver has lost just once, and outscored those teams 45-24, a large part of the reason it's got the No. 1 goal differential in the league at plus-44 in 41 games. Tops in power play percentage and goals for per game. Fourth on the PK and in goals allowed per game. All very impressive. All anchored by playing in a division that is absolute garbage.

Problem is, no division in the West as bad as is the Northwest, and the Canucks have a lot of games left against those teams. Four each against Calgary and Minnesota, two each against Colorado and Edmonton. You can count on them picking up at least 16 points from that set. They can win 10 without even facing much resistance.

But the real reason the Canucks are going to win the League this year is that their remaining 41 games feature another 24 games against bottom-half teams.

Of those teams they've already played, they've taken 30 points from 21 games.

Luongo will still get great stats. The Sedins will still pile up points. Vigneault will continue to look like a genius. The back half of the season will likely feature more losses for Vancouver, but not many, and frankly, the final standings are still going to look like an absolute massacre.

Then the playoffs will start, every team will be good, and it'll be a whole different ballgame.

What We Learned: Here's why nothing can stop the Canucks

This article seems to paint the weak NW as a downside (in terms of playoff prep)....I look at it in a good way, in that the Nucks (knock on wood) shouldn't be as battered and bruised from intense divisional battles all year (as they were in the early-late 2000's, when Cgy, Col, and Min were all good, and the division was one of the best in the league). Winning so many tight one goal games (like the Nucks did in Luongo's first year in Van) has to take a huge mental and physical toll over the course of a season, so by the time the playoffs roll around, the team has nothing left.

They will still have to up their game come playoffs, but I'm sure they know that, and most of the team has gained PO experience over the past few years which should help.

I would rather go into the playoffs fresh from having blown out the oilers 6 times, than injured and tired from physical battles with calgary for the division title.

The best recent example of this is when Tampa won in '04. They beat up on Atlanta (78pts), Carolina (76pts), Florida (75pts) and Washington (59pts) all season long and it didn't seem to affect them when the playoffs came around. TO a lesser extent, Carolina the next year also took the cup coming out of a very weak division, with 3 non playoff teams.

Samuelsson was a great stand-in on the top line last year when Burr was struggling... I think it would be good to keep him around for those stints where AV needs to change things up.

BTW, Samuelsson IS fifth on the team for points right now (24), 6th in assists (16), and tied with Burr and Raymond for 5th in goals (8). He's also third in shots (112) behind Kes and Danny.

You others REALLY think it's a good idea to move him??

Jimmy Howard is totally under-rated...

You care to explain why you think he is? Or are you just saying that cuz he won one game for the wings? What about his game tonight vs the avs? He gave up 4 goals on 10 shots. His stats suck. He's 28th in gaa, 25th in sv% and you think he's totally under rated? And those stats aren't even including his game tonight. Have you forgotten which team he plays for? The Wings are good no matter who plays in goal. This is a team that's prolly gonna make Chris Osgood a HOFer....yes Chris Osgood. Anybody *cough Ty Conklin cough* can play goal for the wings and win and not to mention they have a guy named Lidstrom who plays on their defence.

Goaltenders that do well in the playoffs need to become hot when the season is on the line.

You can have those random no-name rookie/"noob" goalies that become hot and make a name for themselves at the time to win playoff rounds,
vs the big name goalies that shit the bed when they need to steal the game.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2011/01/11/sp-allstar-names.html

The players from the group of 42 selected for the game will vote for team captains and two alternates per squad, who will then draft their team on Jan. 28 from the full pool of players. A roster of 21 players — 12 forwards, six defence, three goalies — will be drafted with no guidelines on choosing by position.

A coin flip will decide which pair of captains will select first. The captains are expected to be announced in the coming days.

The SuperSkills competition takes place on Jan. 29 (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 7 p.m. ET). Skills events include fastest skater, breakaway challenge, accuracy shooting, skills challenge relay, hardest shot and elimination shootout.

Edmonton Oilers rookies Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle lead the group of 12 rookies who will compete in the skills events, with other first-year players Tyler Seguin of the Boston Bruins, Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks, and Jeff Skinner of the Carolina Hurricanes.

By virtue of winning the 2010 Stanley Cup, Chicago coach Joel Quenneville will be the head coach of one all-star team. Philadelphia's Peter Laviolette and Alain Vigneault of the Vancouver Canucks will serve as co-coaches of the other team.

Here is the full list of the players selected for the all-star game:
• Jonas Hiller, G, Anaheim Ducks

Shanahan was just doing an interview and said that certain players told their GMs they don't want to participate in the all star weekend and the GMs relayed the info to league offices before the players were chosen. Word is Zetterberg and Luongo were 2 of those players.

Understandable, Lu just had a new child and would rather take the time off to spend at home and honestly, most players I know would rather take the weekend off for a mini vacation in the middle of a long season.

Each team is represented by at least one player in the game OR by the rookies in the skills competition.

There are four teams without a player on the actual all star squad.

Canucks have a state of the art dressing room with private iPod docks at each locker, interactive internet televisions, and a coffee machine that makes 20 different types of coffee.

Oilers have... A PING PONG TABLE OMGZ!

Snub No. 1: Ales Hemsky over Henrik Zetterberg. [NB: ESPN's Pierre LeBrun speculated that Zetterberg asked out of the All-Star selection.] It's not that Hemsky has been horrible -- 24 points in 27 games, one of the few Oilers that's a plus player -- but he missed 13 games to injury and didn't exactly man up when Edmonton needed him most: During that awful November stretch when the Oil lost seven of eight, Hemsky had a whopping three points. You can't even argue this was an "equal representation" pick to include an Oiler because four teams -- Buffalo, Florida, Phoenix and the New York Islanders -- don't have an All-Star. Which brings us to number two on the list...

Snub No. 2: Patrik Elias over....anybody, really. The line on Elias: 9G-21A-30PTS, tied for 56th amongst all NHL forwards. Minus-11 rating puts him in the league's bottom 700 players. Plays for the worst team in hockey (If the weekend had to include a Devil, couldn't NHL brass have thrown Mattias Tedenby in the rookie superskills?) Yet that jam-packed resume was enough to get Elias an All-Star gig ahead of more worthy players, like Mike Richards. Even if you make the argument that Elias is in because he plays left wing, Andrew Ladd, Alex Semin, James Neal and Ryane Clowe would've been better choices.

Snub No. 3: Phil Kessel over Clarke MacArthur. You could argue Kessel isn't even the best forward on his own team. MacArthur is Toronto's leading scorer (34 points); Kessel is tied for fourth. MacArthur is one of three Toronto regulars with a plus rating; Kessel is minus-15, second-worst. MacArthur is one of the few positive acquisitions of the Brian Burke regime; Kessel (rightly or wrongly) is known as the guy that cost the Leafs Tyler Seguin and (assuming Toronto stays the course) another top-five pick this year. You could even make the case that MacArthur and Mikhail Grabovski deserved the nod ahead of Kessel.

Snub No. 4: Mike Green over John-Michael Liles. Instead of picking an offensive defenceman on pace for a career year (Liles through 43 games: 5G-25A-30PTS, on pace for 10-48-58), the NHL opted for an offensive defenceman on pace for his lowest output in four years (Green through 35 games: 8G-12A-20PTS, on pace for 16-23-39). But what if Liles was prominently featured on HBO wearing moccasins while zipping around on his orange Vespa? Would he have gotten the nod then?

Snub No. 5: Erik Karlsson over Lubomir Visnovsky. Visnovsky is fifth amongst all defencemen in scoring (7G-26A-33PTS) and has been an absolute rock for Anaheim this year. He leads the team in ice time and is the only Ducks defenceman to suit up for all 44 games. Remember, their blueline was absolutely ravaged at the beginning of the year (Anaheim's dressed 11 different blueliners already); Visnovsky was the one constant as the Ducks rallied from a horrible start to sixth place in the West . As for Karlsson...he was a healthy scratch twice this year and is minus-11 for one of the worst teams in the league.

the so called 'weak team' is 8-3-1 in their last 12

So? Canucks' are an elite team that's at the top of the league. 2nd worst team in the league... I'll say yes, they are pretty weak. I dunno, I didn't expect this game to be close. Shots 20-9 in first period... yeah, that's something I expected... 60 mins round.

I dunno about you guys, but I considered Canucks to be a much stronger team than them.
