Yes, because we all know that the sort of player you are in junior is sure to be the sort of player you are in the NHL. Yep, that's why Pyatt has fewer PIMs in his career than...oh, Henrik?
How many fights as he gotten into? Maybe one a year?

CANUCKS VAULT INTO TOP SPOT IN NHL POWER RANKINGS
An 8-1-1 stretch in the last ten games has helped lift the Vancouver Canucks into top spot of the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings.
A week after the Canucks were dropped down the seventh, with Christian Ehrhoff sidelined, the Canucks continued their winning ways and got Ehrhoff back in the lineup on the weekend, enough to pull ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings.
Vancouver's special teams has scored 31 special teams goals (29 power play, two shorthanded), while allowing 18 special teams goals against (17 power play goals, one shorthanded goal), a differential of plus-13.
Atlanta, at plus-11, and Pittsburgh, at plus-9 have the next best special teams differentials.
Corey Crawford's improved play in the Blackhawks net, giving him a bigger role, helped bump Chicago up from 14 to nine, while Cam Ward's exceptional play for Carolina has moved the 'Canes up to 15 from 20.
The New York Rangers dipped from nine to 13, in part because of Ryan Callahan's injury and in part because they went from one side to the other of a Pacific Division logjam, as the Kings, Sharks and Stars hold down spots 10 through 12.
Montreal, losers of four of their last five, is the only other Canadian team in the top 20, as Calgary, Ottawa, Edmonton and Toronto all fall in the bottom third.

CANUCKS VAULT INTO TOP SPOT IN NHL POWER RANKINGS
it was a few games back when the leafs lost to the philly, and a fan threw a waffle onto the ice.
Through an interview, he said he was helping the leafs get a nutritious diet so that they can play better.
You guys make no sense. I'm not saying he can produce, I'm saying he's not a softy. He's a big guy and just because all you remember of him is how he was crying in the interviews cuz of Carly doesn't make him a softy.
Of course you change up your game when you make it to the NHL but that doesn't mean he'll still fuck you up.
The main reason why he was shipped out of Buffalo and labeled a dud was because he's as tough as a pillow full of kittens.
He's suppose to change up his game when he made it into the NHL? Last I checked he wasn't playing the tough guy role or scoring a whole lot of points.

see how many times theres a 5 or an odd # under the PIM column? thats how many cans of whoop ass the guy Pylon fought has opened this season. I count at least 8. hes on pace for 200PIM
Pylon on the other hand, is on pace for an ass kicking, rough housing, tough guy... 48 pim, probably mostly due to reach arounds.
not to mention, he also KOed Colton Orr earlier this season and is tough as shit

You're the one that based Pyatt's toughness on his junior stats.
We're the ones telling you that Pyatt is a softy because he spent three years in Vancouver being big but playing small. How many thunderous hits do you remember him using that 230 pound body for? One? Two? Did you ever hear anyone say "Taylor Pyatt...damn, that dude sure has some grit. Always playing the body."
No, instead, all anyone ever said about Pyatt is girls telling us "Oh, he has pretty eyes."
Big != tough.

the TSN.ca comment at the bottom of each article posters are by far the worst haters I've ever seen. they make the mess that is CDC look intelligent. they are all leaf/oil/flames fans and its beyond me how they try so hard to hate the canucks.
theres the odd real intelligent post in there, almost better than what the columnists post, but they get buried so fast with the hate.

Its waffle man to you. What critisimS are you taking about? I have no problem critisizing my team and I would hardly consider any of my positive comments as gloating either. Though I enjoy the waffle protests I thought the timing of last nights tossing wasn't wise. The leafs dominated the play for much of that game despite the score and were attempting a comeback. The delay of game from the waffle tossing could have killed what momentum they started building. If the fans don't like the final outcome, then toss the waffles. I did like that they were able to score a couple goals despite the protest.
I have brought up the poor quality of comments on tsn's site before here and believe me canuck fans are no saints on their either. Leaf articles are follewed by mostly habs/canuck troll comments. I figure the NHL is follwed by people of all ages and maturity levels so there childish behaviour is to be expected. Plus enjoying hockey brings out the inner child so its easier for more childish behaviour to surface as well - then you throw alcohol into the mix and its a troll party.

What was the reason gary bettman not allowing NHL team to expand in las vegas again?
I was there this weekend and saw huge amount of nhl fans. Since phoenix coyotes are having economy problems it would be nice to see 30 games played in las vegas and 52 games played in phoenix. That way it will draw more tourist to las vegas to see their home team play at the same time support the coyotes

No shit! Even the Lady Byngiest of NHL players could kick any of our asses because they're still world class athletes playing in a professional sports league where fucking FIGHTING is legal...whereas most of us would get a nice hotel room with bars on it for starting one at a bar.
How the fuck is that relevant to this thread? No one is comparing US to players in the NHL. When someone says a player is soft, they mean relative to other fucking players. That's like saying "Dude, that motherfucking PICASSO? He can paint better than anyone in this thread."

Oh, is it ever gloomy is Flamesville... knowing your team is completely out of contention to even make the playoffs, before Christmas is not fun times for fans.
not to mention spending to the cap, burdened with numerous unmovable contracts (Sarich, Bouwmeester, Stajan, Staios, Jokinen, Kotalik, etc), and an extremely shallow prospect pool. At least the Oilers have a future and some good young players.
Sarich - 3.6
J-Blow - 6.7
Stajan - 3.5
Staios - 2.7
Jokinen - 3
Kotalik - 3
Dear god those are some HORRIBLE contracts.

Yeah, for sure... it's not just that the team sucks now, it's that the entire organization is SCREWED for the foreseeable future. They seriously need to completely clean house and make drastic moves... like trade Iginla and Kiprosoff for prospects, in order to bring the timeframe of sucking down to 3-4 years, instead 6-8 years.

I almost feel sorry for Toronto fans. Brian Burke has truly screwed the franchise for the next decade.
I was too young to remember the Harold Ballard years (and apparently, they were pretty bad), but this current team under Burke and Wilson is truly beyond horrible. The Kessel trade is going to be an albatross for a long time. It's akin to the Cam Neely deal we made in the 80s. Burke raised the expectations for the fan base by claiming he could do a quick rebuild around one player and it's failed miserably. He also signed some horrible contracts such as Komisarek, Colton Orr, and Bozak.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect him to make those 2 saves that he let in - they are WWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK , espeically so for a 7 million dollar goalie.
Seriously Luongo fans need to wake up and see him for what he is - a good goalie that occasionally makes spectacular saves but let in too many softies for the amount of money he's making.

His GAA and save % are horrible for an "elite" goalie. If he didn't have the team that he has now in front of him, he'd be at the bottom of the stats list.
Why can't people see through this? He's a good goalie that plays for a damn good team right now but AT THIS MOMENT he is not playing up to his reputation.

You also have to take into account the teams they played in those last 12 games. They really only had maybe 4 quality opponents.
Also, of course the amount of money they're making is important to us. If the Canucks paid Luongo what he was really worth they'd have extra money to invest in players that can make up for his inadequacies.
canuck's lost is not in vain, i am not first in my fantasy league :')

in terms of the cap, yea i do know what i'm talking about because the only number that matters to fans is CAP HIT, not yearly salary.. that has absolutely nothing to do a fan's opinion of him based on salary.
he makes 5.33 million, argue that value, not whatever random number between 4 and 10 comes to your fingers.
if at 5.33 he is as horrible as you say, what would you do to improve this situation? pay Cory 2.5-3 to be a starter and use that addition 2 million to sign an "Elite sniper" etc. etc.?
please elaborate on what it is we should do instead of having Luongo in a hypothetical world
EDIT* and this goes for everyone saying "what if" we didnt have Luongo's Salary, if we were paying a new magical goalie 2.5-3 million which is below average for a starter, who exactly would push us over the edge for that extra 2?
if you really want to actually break down tonights game, you could also attribute one of the wings PP goals to Kesler when he did not clear the puck on that spin-o-rama attempt to get it on his forehand and they scored shortly after, or the OT goal on edler batting the puck with his hand right onto Zetterbergs stick, or even Ehroff's inability to bury the puck into an empty net..
if we had won, no one would be talking about Luongo, and this game was so evenly matched it was basically a coin flip, yet there's panic lol.. pathetic
I would not argue this was a strong game, it was probably the oposite, but to argue his value based on one "noticeable" game is idiotic
I'm going to have to agree with the Luongo criticism on this one. Good goalie but had a mediocre night.
Goal 3 was weak backhander by Zetterburg on an already overly limited angle.
Goal 4 was PP goal which he could've done better. Luongo never recovered for the Lidstrom rebound. Just went down for the first shot and stayed down. Never bothered to get up to reset or at least a hailmary lateral to Lidstrom.
(still had a high probability of it going in but the effort would've been appreciated) Still, should've been our 2 points had it not been for the above and we wouldn't even be discussing the OT goal.
Anyways, it's only 1 game for me and it's nothing to lose sleep over - that is, unless we get another stretch of complacency again.

It's only $5.3M because it's in exchange for a 12 year term; meaning he'll still be occupying that much cap space well into his late 30's and early 40's.
Since that's the only reason, there's no sense tip-toeing around that Luongo himself, the franchise, and everyone else thinks he's an $8M - $10M goalie. He would never sign for $5M in any other circumstances.
edit:
BTW, cap does matter not in signing an "elite sniper" like you exampled, but considering how close we are to the cap - Hamhuis on $4.5 & Ballard @ $4.2, we may stand to lose Erhoff or Edler (later on down the road).
In which case is only going to hurt Luongo more if his defense thins out. Unless, he actually does perform to the value of his cap space (and not need decent defense to pad his performance), which is not entirely an unreasonable perspective point.

in terms of the cap, yea i do know what i'm talking about because the only number that matters to fans is CAP HIT, not yearly salary.. that has absolutely nothing to do a fan's opinion of him based on salary.
he makes 5.33 million, argue that value, not whatever random number between 4 and 10 comes to your fingers.
if at 5.33 he is as horrible as you say, what would you do to improve this situation? pay Cory 2.5-3 to be a starter and use that addition 2 million to sign an "Elite sniper" etc. etc.?
please elaborate on what it is we should do instead of having Luongo in a hypothetical world
The amount of money he makes has EVERYTHING to do with his performance - he's paid to perform at a certain level so if he doesn't meet that expectation then he is OVERPAID. This is simple logic so I don't see how you can argue with this.
5.33 million, 7 million, 10 million - it doesn't matter. The point is that he's being paid a certain amount to perform at a certain level - and he's NOT DOING THAT. You can be an accountant and be specific with the amount but the end result is the same.
I don't know WHAT I'd do - he's signed a contract already and our team is good enough to cover his ass for the time being, but how long will that last, and how many BIG games could we have won if he didn't fail so badly? The last 2 playoff elimination games were good testaments for his ability to be the elite goalie that he's meant to be, which he has failed to do, TWO YEARS in a row.
Look, like I said before, I'm not saying he's a piece of shit goalie and we need to get rid of him - I'm just frustrated that he's not performing at a level that he needs to be, and is making silly mistakes that end up costing us the game. He's a good/above average goalie that plays behind a very strong team at the moment, which covers up a lot of his weaknesses in his game that need to be fixed/changed.
I remember his 1st and 2nd year here that he would make 99% of the saves you'd expect him to make, and was usually beaten by shots that were almost impossible to save. He occasionally had some weak ones but I didn't care because every goalie goes through a few bad games throughout the season. NOW... it's like every other game or every other 2 games he pulls a stinker, and I'm beginning to feel less secured when he's in the net - that alone should say something about how the fans perceive him as our starting goalie.

In 5 years the Canucks have a opt out clause where they can trade Luongo if need be. Not saying they will but in a few years if they choose to go in a different direction in goal that is an option. Poor game tonight by him but he'll bounce back. I agree with the criticism that he has not lived up to his contract the past few years but in the grand scope of things, how well he plays in this years playoffs will determine how well this season is for him.
technically you could say niedermeyer goal in 06? was his fault too. ill give him the benefit of the doubt though because he played good those 2 series

Goddamn reeelaxx. Where's the christmas spirit, lighten up a little. it's not the end of the world!
It was a good fucking game, great atmosphere, and great hockey. best game i've seen in awhile, though we didn't end up on top. This is what games are meant to be like. Luongo's human, he's bound to make mistakes. He played like shit, but he'll make the necessary changes and move on. If he lingers over this loss like most of us, then how will one ever improve?
Sure, we should be allowed to expect more from the amount we pay him. but luckily he's making these errors now, and can correct them when it really counts. We need to look past this and support the players that we have in all they can do. I'm sure Luongo's not purposely letting these shit goals in.
you win some, you lose some. can't have em all. yes we can point fingers and criticize all we want, but luongo (as well as others) knows he played like shit. he will bounce back, and then the haters will have nothing to say.

But like Hondaracer, you can't bank on such benefits that's contingent on other things.
In your example: Contingent on another team wanting his $5M + contract until he's 42. (at at 5 years down the road, Luongo will be 36) So I'm not sure how attractive that trade bait will be.
In Hondaracer's hopes: Contingent that he'll retire before his contract expiry and forfeit the remaining few million dollars.

Luongo superstar statistics seems to be falling every year since arriving in Vancouver.
The best Roberto Luongo we have seen was in the playoffs series against Dallas.
It looked like the puck was fluttering, it could've dipped. oh well. Only Zetterberg or premier players can score like that anyway.

Uhhhh,
Like all games, this is just a game review. Where we talk about the good and the bads of the game. No one's getting down on the team.
When we win, the pros will heavily out weigh the cons, and rightfully so vice-versa on losses.
This is not directed to you (Chouchou) but to some other fans:
Why the hell do some people view any negative observation as an anti-Canuck sentiment? Should the Canucks be immune to "objective" game reviews?
I mean, in a positive note I think Samuellson played well today despite having played his way to the grinding lines as of recent. But it can't be helped that the bigger topic is goaltending. (I mean, some days it'll be Alberts, some days it'll be the twins (not producing), and just like the rest, today is Luongo) Just take it as a 1 game review/de-brief.

tell that goalie, ok, our one and only goal is a stanley cup, anything but a spot in the western conference finals will be considered a failure, and we're riding you all the way there
See how many of those goalies make it passed the 2nd round
Professional sports are 90% mental, Luongo's contract extension was basically saying, ok.. were puting faith in you that over the next few years where our core is intact, we have a shot at the cup and you need to realize that we need you to do everything in your power to put demons behind you, focus on the game, and we will do everything in our power to prepare you to perform optimally, focus on your game, and let the team build confidence as a whole, not build confidence on Luongo saves resulting in breakdowns, penalties, etc. shit doesnt work like that.
Whats sad is that i guarantee you in those other cities where goalies are making MILLIONS more than Luongo, during losses they do not rip into their goalies as hard as we do
Of course, the lame fan will always resort back to the "How many cups has Luongo/the Canucks won, how many playoff victories, 7uongo!"
the fact of the matter is, that argument is like saying the sky is blue, no shit the sky is blue, 99% of the time that statement is true, the one day that i say the sky is green and it's green, holy fuck i look like a fucking genius!
its the same thing as saying "how many cups have the Canucks won?" "How many cups has Luongo won?" shit doesnt happen in a day, and the stanley cup aint like winning a ball hockey tournament, the stars have to align perfectly for a championship to be won, and in a city like Vancouver, the universe might have to align in order for it to happen, but whenever it does, people wont be caring about bad regular season goals.

You're right. The only way a team will take on Luongo if he is still playing at a consistent level. However when the opt out clause for the Canucks takes effect Luongo will only be owed 13 million for the remaining 5 years. So I can see teams out there willing to accept that. Roloson is 41 and still playing at a high level so I can see Luongo sustaining the same consistency. Teams wanting to meet the cap floor will be interested as Luongo will essentially be carrying a "virtual cap hit", being paid less then the 5.33 cap hit those remaining years.

Tonight's lost was clearly on the shoulder of Luongo. Putting salary and all that garbage aside, the two goals he let in should be pretty routine.
The tying goal, well.. everyone so focused on the left side of the play, Lidstrom snuck in. Typical PP strategy that just maybe a simple COVER THE D-MAN coulda saved the play. Regardless, the Wings PP is great because they can DO JUST THAT, force play to one side and have a Dman sneak right in. Luongo was close to helpless there. Whatever
Erhoff had the puck bounce on him in OT, which lead to the turnover, but Luongo had all the time + space to challenge Zetteberg.
One way or another, its one fucking game. Let this game be a wakeup for Luongo because the next 2 weeks ain't gonna be easy. He's got the flyers, sharks, oilers, stars to worry about. Those teams are just as good.
On a side note. isn't it great to see that the team actually has a chance to finish higher than 3rd? it shows improvement within the club.

Something else I didn't mention in my previous posts was that Luongo does not carry a NMC. If the Canucks down the road chose to demote him the minors and he does not report, contract is void. Not saying they will do this as that is a slap in the face but crazier things have happened.

If you really are only looking at the "now" perspective, Luongo on that list should be $8M. He's only a $5.3 based on a loophole that was corrected because of him, Hossa & Kovalchuk.
If we're going to judge him on a "$5.3" perspective, you have to take into account the term of that perspective because the benefits of that term are all short-sighted. Yes, he's only occupying $5.3 now but how many on that list of goalies you had will be occupying the same amount until over the age of 40.

Honestly, I'm not worried about the term whatsoever. If he shits the bed when he starts getting older, there are a ton of ways the Canucks can get out of the contract. Demote him to the minors is highly unlikely but possible, but take this into account. In the remaining 4 years of his deal Luongo is only owed 7 million. If the Canucks buy him out they will be stuck with a cap hit of $587,000 which is peanuts. I've also mentioned the trade option a few posts back as well.
On a side note. isn't it great to see that the team actually has a chance to finish higher than 3rd? it shows improvement within the club.
Werd, and Kesler really coming into his own. I was already content with the Kesler of the last 2 years but like the Sedins, he keeps reaching for new ceilings annually.
Tambi is also another great find & surprise that I'm actually warming up to hopes of becoming a regular (even after Raymond's) return. I don't know, maybe in place of Hansen or Sammeullson on the 2nd line. He's making things really interesting on how this'll play out. But for now I really like him on the 2nd line.

Basically unproven? He unseated Jiggy as the Ducks #1 goalie, took out the Sharks in 6 games, and pushed the Red Wings to 7 in the '09 playoffs. Not to mention consistently keeping Anaheim in the game despite the somewhat sad state their defence has become. I'd love to see Luongo try and keep it together with a D like that in front of him.

You also have to take into account the teams they played in those last 12 games. They really only had maybe 4 quality opponents.
Also, of course the amount of money they're making is important to us. If the Canucks paid Luongo what he was really worth they'd have extra money to invest in players that can make up for his inadequacies.
So you're saying he's worth less than 5.3 mil? Cause that's what his cap hit is. Sorry, but there are 30 NHL GM's who would be willing to pay him more than that.
and YOU know what you're talking about? we all have equal rights to voice our opinions.
His GAA and save % are horrible for an "elite" goalie. If he didn't have the team that he has now in front of him, he'd be at the bottom of the stats list.
Ryan Miller has almost identical stats to Luongo right now, but I guarantee there's nobody in Buffalo throwing him under the bus like this. .913 is a horrible sv % for a run and gun team? And people wonder why Vancouver is a goalie graveyard...:\

Best post in this thread. When Luongo first game to Vancouver, the team was 21st in the league in scoring. They're now generally top 5, and that has resulted from a drastic change in playing style. As a result, teams are getting better scoring opportunities (although they are still fairly solid defensively), and Luongo's stats have taken a hit.
