burr and kes quiet in the playoffs. story of the last two years

Yep. Well, the way I saw it this year around, Kes was going to carry over some momentum from the regular season and pot 1 or 2 goals and contribute a bit. Burrows is just having another lackluster playoff run. Weak forecheck tonight, no hits, poor passing/dump and chase plays. But an overall collective failure tonight.

Someone really, really needs to step up for game 6. The past 2 games have been pretty much unacceptable for a team that wants to win the cup. Vancouver has the team to win the cup - the fans know it, the coaches know it, the players know it - it's just a matter of actually making it happen. This has been the same old story for Vancouver, and I really hope they don't piss it away. This is the best team I have ever watched and I'll be pretty disheartened if we suffer a first round knockout, especially when we had Chicago on their heels. The team is loaded with talented players who all have the capability, they just need to put the heart we've all seen before into their game.
For some of these guys, nearing the end of their careers, this might be their last chance at a cup and they need to work for it. The Stanley Cup Playoffs are the pinnacle of many hockey players' careers, and I would like nothing but success for every player on the team.
When your best player on the ice is a rookie who has never played an NHL playoff game before, you know something is up. The Sedins don't look like back to back Art Ross winners, Kesler and Burrows seem fairly ineffective, the fourth line is really doing nothing but taking penalties. This isn't the team we saw during the regular season or even the first 3 games and I really, really hope that they take a serious look at what's going on and leave it all on the ice.
I'm also confused as to why AV decided it would be smart to put Rome in, over Ballard who has been solid throughout the entire playoffs? 10:27 TOI, and he's a -2? That's just brutal, especially since Ballard, through 4 games, has not been scored against, and has had shots and hits to boot. Maybe he had the flu or something, but I'm sure he would have battled through if there was anything. The entire defensive core has looked extremely soft the past two games, and what was with the 3-4 breakaways this game? We need to tighten up defensively, stop pinching at stupid times, make that first breakout pass and show the league that we have the best defensive core out there. Like I said before, we just need to wake up.
I'll believe in blue until the very last second, I'm just hoping the Canucks wake up and realize the opportunity they have in front of them and really make something of it!
From the 2009 playoffs, but hey, it still applies to Sunday!

Way to ruin the start of an awesome long weekend, Canucks!
If they lose this series it'll be the worst melt down I"ve seen in the 18 years that I've watched this team play, and it may very well be the last for me to closely follow these guys because there's just too much emotional disappointments to have to take, from something that's supposed to be ENTERTAINING, something that I do outside of work that's supposed to be FUN, but instead it's causing me absolute frustration because there is NOTHING I can do about it to make it better.
People might say "hey take it easy, the players are human, and they make mistakes and have feelings too!" Sure! but there's a reason why you're paid millions of dollars every year to play this game because you're SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE THAT PRESSURE and be able to elevate above all others - why else would people pay money to watch these games?
I think there may be a small chance of people rioting if we lose game 7... the frustration level is EXTREMELY high right now in this city - it's like a ticking time bomb waiting to explode, from all these years of absolute disappointments from their hockey team.
God... 5 hours after the game and I"m STILL steaming from the loss. Sigh. They didn't even put up a fight. Not one bit. Where's the leadership? Where's the motivators? Where's the coaching?
Fuck this bullshit. I'm too mad right now to talk anymore hockey.

in addition, the frustration is not from losing the game. its the playoffs, we are playing a team that won the Stanley cup last year. Its the fact that we lost back to back 7-2 and 5-0 games. It wasn't even close, after the 3rd goal everyone looked as if they were ready to pack their bags and take it to the next game already.

I've been a Canuck fan for a long time and I must say, tonight's game was one of the most disappointing games in a long time. It was more disappointing than the Game 7 loss to Minnesota in 2003 and almost as disappointing as Game 7 in 1994. As a Canuck fan for almost 20 years, I'm used to disappointment. But this year was supposed to be different.
I'm absolutely befuddled how a team can fail to show up 2 games in a row. You can see it in their eyes: the team is done. How ironic is the latest NHL Playoff commercial featuring the Canucks? History does come in threes: only this year, the Blackhawks will defeat the Canucks 3 years in a row and be the fourth team in NHL history to come back from a 3-0 series deficit.
AV is done after this year. I can't believe that he has the gall to pledge that Luongo will start in Game 6.

Werd.
Losses would've been fine if it weren't for the fact that the last 2 games weren't anywhere near the vicinity of even "being close." It's one thing to see a team take a spanking; it's another to see a President's Trophy team take "the spanking"; and twice; back to back.
Really befuddling.

Like most of you, the thing that frustrates the shit out of me the most is the effort. Down a few goals and it seemed like we just gave up - like we surrendered.
I was all excited when I read about Kes saying they were going to go back to the physical game they played in the first two games but nothing. Yeah, a few decent hits here and there but nothing to really send the message and change the flow of momentum. I was a big defender of him and Burr not putting up points cause they were working the D but ...where's the D now?
Yeah, you can say AV should've played Ballard, arrange the lines differently, Schneids should get the start Sunday, etc. Sure but the way I see it, it shouldn't matter. Our team has the skill set to beat the Hawks handily.
I think the problem lies with poor mindset/weak mental toughness, failure of the coaching staff to recognize what the players need to hear, instruction to get them back on track and bad goaltending (again, cause they're in his head). It's like we've gone into the last 2 games with no plan and when we fall behind or the plan fails, the floodgates open and we have zero response. We need to adapt and see the situation for what it is.
Recognition - We can shut these fuckers down in one game. ONE GAME!!!
Direction - Stay on track and work the plan...til the end.
Inspiration - Make them realize that they're more than capable of achieving the goal. They might be down in the shit right now but nothing is stopping us from getting up, fighting and succeeding. Don't let the fear of losing get in the way.

The Canucks have faced 3-1 deficits before (against the Jets, Flames, Blues, Rangers) and the common element to all of these series was that those teams had a will to win.
I've seen none of it over the last 2 games and there is no evidence that the team will turn it around on Sunday or Tuesday.
Most of us who've played sports competitively shit the bed sometimes with a bad game, race, etc. But, I bet most of us never come up with 2 terrible games, races, etc. in a row unless you're dealing with injuries. You might not win the second game, but you always put in a better effort. With the Canucks, there is simply no explanation to have 2 bad games in a row with absolutely no effort at the biggest time of the year. What's most obvious is that the team has failed mentally. Where does the blame lie? Does it lie in the Sedins and Kesler? Does it lie in the coaching staff? Who knows? But, Gillis' stomach must be really turning as the core parts of the team he has heavily invested in have now failed 3 years in a row.

You know what pissed me off more than anything? Watching the post-game comments when Lu stood there in the locker room and said that a loss is a loss in the playoffs, makes no difference if it's 5-0 or overtime loss.
FUCK THAT NOISE LU!!!!
Yah it makes absolutely no difference whether you lose 7-2 and 5-0 instead of 3-2 in OT??? How about psychologically you asshole?????
That guy is so cocky and arrogant... which is a whole lot different than being CONFIDENT... Luuuuuuu thinks his shit never stinks. I want to see him staring at the floor, unable to look a reporter in the eye and just saying grimly that he needs to play better... not sitting there with a "I don't give a fuck, I'm a gold medal winner" look on his face just assuming he can stop anything and if he doesn't it's because someone was screening/tipping/perfect shotting.

all this frustration is just a part of being a canucks fan. i'm sure they will pull it off but at the cost of a missed opportunity for rest and avoiding injuries.
the team needs to step up big time. that last game featured no hitting. during the 3 games they've won all the analysts talked about how much they were hitting and grabbed all the energy in the game.
not that games 4/5 are entirely his fault but i still have yet to see Luongo win a series/tournament on his own and prove himself worthy of being mentioned with the upper echelon of goalies. lu may have a gold medal but i haven't forgotten the parise goal like everyone else did just because sidney scored.

I don't even know what to say. A president's trophy team shitting the bed not once...but two...i just cannot comprehend. Sports are a funny thing though, and things can change with a hit, a save, a fight, a goal, hell even a moment at the roxy.
It starts with the players on the ice, but AV has to make adjustments. To say after game 4 that they need to make a few minor adjustments and have more gap control...and you see that result.
On a lighter note....this interview from dennis green is hilarious...i think it applies to the Canucks..."the hawks were who we thought they were...and we let them off the hook"

Toews was cocky after game 3...
"We have to expose the Canucks for what they really are" thats a bold statement for someone down 3-0...
It would be epic if someone like Kesler came out and said..."I guarentee we will win game 6"
That would be so against the fold and so against the teams mantra all season..but this sport is just as much mental as anything else...can the hawks be any more motivated....that would be awesome if someone guarenteed a victory.. not luongo though..lol..
The entire team has forgotten the basics of how to play hockey. Canucks couldn't break out of their own end with any speed to save their playoff lives. On penalty kills they often tried to break out instead of dumping it deep. They kept trying to do fancy moves or passes instead of just shooting the puck when they had opportunities. STOP TAKING FUCKING SLAPSHOTS, QUICK RELEASE!!! I think I saw a single one-timer on the power play. They let the Hawks dominate the neutral zone and skate right into the top of the circle and shoot on numerous occasions unchallenged. Absolutely brutal play, it was embarrassing to watch.
If the Canucks don't score first in Game 6 they'll be in serious trouble of losing the series.
Well, with the extra day between games, let's hope the flu bug that is going around the team gets taken care of.
I call biological warfare, LOL. Just before game 4 a few hotties hired by the Hawks went to the hotel where the Canucks were staying and gave a few players more than just a good time............

Pretty much! I don't think last night can really be blamed on Lu. Sure he let in 4 goals on 12 shots, but they were a combination of screens, breakaways and deflections. Defence should have been boxing out, forwards should have been covering their men but instead, everyone seemed to be floating.
The team in front is more so the problem, where they've look flat footed, are losing all the little battles, aren't playing their game down low and are basically relying on shots from the point that aren't really there. The Nucks really need to get back to the way they've played all season above all else.

Thank you. Seems most people are almost conceding to the fact that they would be OK if they lost the series but put in an amazing effort. A loss is a loss and I'd be just as angry if they loss by 1 goal or 10. I'd be more annoyed after the fact if the games were close and they played well. The expectations this year was to at minimum go deep in the playoffs it doesn't matter how they advanced, whether they mopped the floor all the way there or in typical Canuck fashion make it difficult on themselves.
I'll save my diatribes if they completely melt down but last I remember we have 2 more chances to finish this series off and I don't care how they find a way to win as long as they do. It would certainly help if the no-shows, meaning the entire team would show up.
Win it for Manny!

It's a defining moment for the team this Sunday. Your best players need to play the best in the face of adversity. Coach AV needs to make the adjustments in the team's game to put the TKO on the Hawks.
Sedins, Kesler, Burrows, etc. from the top line to the fourth line plumbers need to play every shift with a sense of urgency and purpose. If they play game 6 like they did in games 1 and 3, the Hawks are cooked.
Bring the killer instinct to put a beatdown on these Hawks! :flamemad:

It's a team game.
I think this is why Lu gets a contingent of fan hate. It's like Lu is absolved of any responsibility and is shouldered to his teammates instead just because he's "Luongo"
It goes back to the days when the fans felt, the team (or city) had to prove to a goaltender their worth when Lu made that statement about waiting on his contract extension to "see if the team's good enough to far into the PO"
Someone on hfboards brought up the point that if AV tries Schneids for game 6 and they still lose, it still gives lu the chance to be a hero in game 7. If Lu lets 4+ goals in again game 6. Schneids is not an option for game 7.

Wow I'm still mad after a night's sleep... like everyone else's been saying, it's not that we lost, but it's how we lost. TWO complete blowouts back-to-back and no sign of any effort on fighting back... that's what worries me and what pisses me off.
Our leadership group as well as our coaching staff have to be questioned on their ability to lead, guide, and inspire. AV will be fired if this team is out in the first round.

I can seeing everyone getting mad and pissed if we lose the series; but we haven't lost anything yet.
Yeah, our last two games sucked donkey balls; but so what? All will be forgiven if we win one of the next two games. And it doesn't matter how we win it either - whether the winning goal goes off someone's butt or a big slapper to the top corner in triple OT.
A series win is all that matters at this point. Doesn't matter if that is game 6 of game 7. Who gives a shit how we get there!

It's true that a lot of us aren't professional athletes and probably can't relate to what the Canucks players are going through right now, but I think it's fair to say that not ONE of us can understand how the whole team and just pack it in, after 3 games of decent effort? How could that even happened?

the thing is even if the Canucks pull through and win in game 6 or 7, that aura they had is gone, of course whether that actually matters is subjective since every new round starts 0-0 but after 3 games I think the general consensus was it was Canucks world they had that swagger, the aura of a winner. Of course you never know with a convincing win it could all come back but I think the damage has been done even if they pull it off imo.

It's going to be a messy move if it happens.
There was some talk that some players might try to get out of their contracts because they don't want to move to Winnipeg, not sure legally they can do it but imagine having an team where half the team wants out.

I'm 50/50 on the Jets being back in Winnipeg. I used to live there and saw the Jets play as a kid. I was there for Selanne's rookie season and was at the game where he set the rookie goal scoring record. Tickets were like $37 bucks and going to those games are some of my fondest memories. I used Selanne's number through all my minor hockey/football/etc days, and I still do now! It would be awesome to see the Jets playing again.
But on the flip side Winnipeg is a fucking dump. I went back there after about 15 years to visit my now ex-gf and not much had changed. It's really not an NHL city. The MTS centre is a single lower-bowl arena that I'm shocked seats 15,000 people. I caught a Moose game there and it felt tiny. I honestly don't think an NHL franchise there will last, and players will not want to go there. Even if they sell out every game like the Canucks do 15,000 tickets does not generate a ton of revenue for the team. Attracting big names to keep the team competitive will be near impossible so interest will fade and the Jets will die a second time.
It's a nice dream but I really don't think it will happen, and if it does it won't last.

Although it's from last year, same shit can be applied to Sundays game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZaTuRtFjak&feature=player_embedded
Hopefully we see some urgency.
It's Game 6 and not Game 7, but Ryan Kesler strongly suggested Friday that his teammates start playing like there's no tomorrow against the Chicago Blackhawks.
"We feel like we want to win this one. Do we have to? Absolutely not," the Vancouver Canucks centre said before the team left for Chicago. "But we're playing this like a Game 7. We're going to go in that building and play like we're playing for our lives. We're going to throw it all out on the table."
If the Canucks can replicate their third period in garbage time of Game 5 — outshooting the Blackhawks 15-6 and creating some real scoring chances — they'll have something to build on. If they stand around and watch the defending Stanley Cup champions dance into their zone untouched and fire away at will on Roberto Luongo, there's going to be a Game 7 on Tuesday. And maybe nothing after that.
Maybe that's why Kesler was taking a sudden-death approach to Sunday. The Canucks can still live to fight another day with a loss, but what can they gain coming home with the prospect of their season ending on home ice? So, it's anything for a win. Forget a likely Selke Trophy for Kesler and the Art Ross and possibly Hart for Daniel Sedin. All that matters now is delivering the knockout punch and not absorbing another devastating blow.
The Blackhawks not only held a wide 20-9 advantage in blocked shots en route to their 5-0 clubbing of the Canucks in Game 5 on Thursday to narrow their series deficit to 3-2, they got a career four-point game from Duncan Keith and two goals from the previously hibernating Marian Hossa. Credit Kesler with helping to keep Jonathan Toews without a goal and Patrick Kane to just one in this series, but those wide open spaces in the offensive zone must disappear Sunday.
"I don't think we'll worry about any specific player on their team — we'll worry about our game now," added Kesler. "Our third period [Thursday] was really good and that's the way we need to play. First two periods, you can throw in the garbage. But we did a lot better and gained momentum, but we've still got to get into lanes and do our jobs.
"Their first three three goals [Thursday], I know I didn't get into the lane in one of them and those are plays you've got to make."
Kesler hasn't scored in his last dozen playoff games against the Blackhawks and trading defence for offence in Game 6 might be dangerous. So many Blackhawks have finally hit stride that shutting them down might be more important than Kesler scoring. Leave that to the top line that must come alive after being dormant for too many stretches and too many games.
"It doesn't really matter who scores — it's what you do every shift that makes a difference," said Kesler. "Obviously, I'm trying to score, but if you don't it's what you do on the other shifts. We're in a good place. We're up 3-2 and we've won there many times. We're very confident and ready for this challenge."
Then why does it seem like the Canucks are down 3-2? You get outscored 12-2 in the last two games and the ghosts of playoff pasts re-appear. The top line can't score, the power play has become predictable and the goaltending has become the focus again. Keith Ballard was parked for Aaron Rome in Game 5 and Cody Hodgson, who replaced Viktor Oreskovich, had four shots and was the best Canuck. What now?
"There are a few points that we need to put into place and I'm not going to share that with you," said coach Alain Vigneault. "If I change the lineup, I'm not going to discuss that now, but I'm confident in this group and they've always responded well."
That includes Roberto Luongo, who starts Game 6 and was named a Vezina Trophy finalist Friday along with Tim Thomas and Pekka Rinne.
"Roberto is the guy," stressed Vigneault. "He's been there in great times for us and we expect him to play real well. And we can all be better. I expect our leaders to lead."
That includes Daniel and Henrik Sedin. They have one goal between them the last two games and seem mesmerized by the pesky and agitating Dave Bolland. If the Canucks are going anywhere, the Sedins must find their way. And that includes linemate Alex Burrows, who has been invisible and has just one series assist.
"We need to do something," admitted Daniel. "Our power play has been good all year and when we do it the right way, we have no problems entering the zone. But when we get too stressed out or get ahead of the play, that's when those things happen. But we shouldn't change too much."
Just the final score.

I was never more disappointed with the Canucks than I was last night. There was no bounceback...no intensity after getting their ass kicked the game before. Like they didn't even care.
I was there for the 8-2 ass kicking from the Flyers a couple years ago. That was nowhere near as bad as yesterday. Just NOTHING from the Canucks.
Though I was like everyone yesterday, I'm actually feeling good about Sunday.

Maybe players need to stop being such fucking prima donnas and worrying about where they live and how much they make, and embrace playing somewhere that they're really appreciated.
And maybe that means getting out and interacting with their fans a little more... not just as signing events and photo ops. One thing that really gets me are those video clips they play in the opening videos, from the early 80s, showing the players walking out the front door of the Coliseum and getting right in a partying with the crowd (and probably get on a transit bus to go home afterward). These days, they just get escorted to their secured underground parking, hop in their X5s and Cayennes, and then go run down pedestrians in crosswalks... er... oops, just kidding :troll:
But you know what I mean. The players have largely been elevated to a level above the common man, and it seems a lot of them have developed the attitude to match... and thus you get guys not wanting to play in places like Edmonton anymore. Well you know what, Edmonton was a shithole in the 80s too, but I bet a lot more players were clamoring to get traded there back then.

They have every right to worry about where they live, and how much money they make. They are just people doing their jobs. If someone like Ilya Bryzgalov, who moved his family to the US, is forced to move to WINNIPEG MANITOBA to work, he has every right to say no, and go play in the KHL. He might not make as much money or win a stanley cup, but his life will be more enjoyable I think.

If where you're working and how much you're making is your ONLY motivation, it's time to look for a new career.
Just sayin'.
Problem is that for most hockey players, hockey is all they know...
Anyhow in Game 6, I wanna see one of the Sedins hit Bolland. And anybody rock any one of the Hawks' top players - preferably Kane.

CHICAGO -- Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook says he's symptom-free and is hopeful to play in Game 6 of the team's Western Conference quarterfinal series against the Vancouver Canucks Sunday night at the United Center.
Seabrook was on the ice Saturday for the first time since Game 3 of the series when he was hit in the head by Canucks winger Raffi Torres.

Hmm..
Trevor Linden was on 1040 yesterday - any way we can hear his comments for those of us that missed it?

They have every right to worry about where they live, and how much money they make. They are just people doing their jobs. If someone like Ilya Bryzgalov, who moved his family to the US, is forced to move to WINNIPEG MANITOBA to work, he has every right to say no, and go play in the KHL. He might not make as much money or win a stanley cup, but his life will be more enjoyable I think.
I think they actually would make more money going to the KHL they always overpay for the NHL guys, like I remember reading Nabby got like a 4 year 24 million dollar deal, money that no NHL team was going to shell out for his services.

every contender has a #1 goalie theres no need for bryzgalov unless yotes sign him therefore his best interest is to sign in the khl for more money and where his family and himself fit in

But, take that as a learning opportunity and turn it around. If you win today, I will forgive you. If you lose today, I'm not watching Game 7.

Anyone see what Turco said?
"I actually have empathy for him, unravelling or whatever you want to call it," Chicago's veteran backup Marty Turco said. "There is so much pressure on him. People say he's unravelled but I think he's handled it pretty friggin' good.
"It's not easy and it's because he's such a competitor. If he didn't give two rats, maybe it would be easier. People love to see others fall down, whether it's his fault or not, they just don't care.
"Those are just some really good goals beating him. There's not much a guy is going to do. He stopped breakaways, and he made great saves. But pucks are going to go in when you have great shooters."
Interesting article.
