I really like the thought of having Doan or Morrow play with Kes.

See I'd much rather it the other way, Doan gives Ryan Kesler an actual Top 6 RW to play with, Samuelsson is decent and can score when on, but Doan is a consistent 60 point threat.
Doan gives us real flexibility to make a bigger move next summer if we still haven't gotten the big trophy.

Doan Samuelsson Raymond are all out of contract years by next summer, which is like 10 million. That could easily be used on a UFA.

Whereas Morrow restricts these possibilities with his 4.1 hit, along with his age. I know Doan is older, but he's likely to retire or sign on a cheaper contract.

Booth is the obvious choice, he is young, solid, plays the way we want, but is another Left handed LW. When we have 5 Burrows Daniel Raymond Higgins Sturm who play LW. I'd rather look for a Top 6 RW for Kesler.
Going off personal experience, right handed guys are much better playing with other right handed guys.

I still believe Hodgsen will be playing in the future. He just needs to get his shit together. We all know the canucks aren't the type of organization to throw fresh draft picks and prospects into the line up right away. Our development system seems very slow/hit or miss. I envy detroit/nashville (those types of teams) management.
As much as I love Linden, you can't compare anyone to Gretzky. Even Crosby isn't on the same pace to match Gretzky. Had Lindros not been injured and have his career more or less end after getting destroyed by Stevens... Back then, people considered him the next Gretzky.

the way i see it is, if hodgson was given 1st/2nd line duty last season, that would have meant our team was in a bad situation. guys like crosby and stamkos were given chances right away because their teams would have tanked either way. they had a lot less to risk by giving them a shot.

hodgson isn't playing consistently with the canucks yet because management feels he isn't quite there yet. i just hope hodgson sticks with it and does everything in his power to crack the line up. i also hope that AV doesn't ruin this (he's already had some harsh words for the guy).

That's the thing. Hodgson is a playmaker. He is the set up man. Can he score? Yes, but from watching him play, he wants to make the play more than he wants to score himself.

This is why people want coho as the center because he wants to play make instead of wanting to shoot.

Scouts have always talked about Cody Hodgson and how he possesses outstanding hockey sense, creativity and two-way upside, but lacks size and an extra gear in his skating.

Maybe this is a captain obvious statement, but once his leg work is NHL ready and he can move faster out there things will start to click better. Even watching the few games in the NHL he's played, he makes good decisions, but his foot speed is lacking. I don't think he will be Eberle fast by any stretch, but if he can get his speed closer to par with his hockey sense, that can be a deadly combo.

The back injury situation and how it played out definately set him back, but he's only 21 years old. He should train with Gary Roberts.

His first NHL goal he showed so much patience. I hope we see him to this in the future very often:

Chris Osgood's long and winding road in the NHL has finally come to an end.

The 38-year-old keeper announced his retirement from hockey in Detroit Tuesday morning, bringing an end to his 17-year playing career. He moves on to a new job within the Red Wings organization.

The Peace River, Alberta-native won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings, who originally drafted Osgood in the third round, 54th overall, in 1991. He suited up for 744 NHL games in his career, spending two stints with the Wings, as well as playing for the Blues and Islanders.

He would serve as the starter for two of his three Cup wins, in 1998 and 2008 and served as Mike Vernon's back-up on Detroit's 1997 Cup-winning team. He also took the Wings to Game 7 of the 2009 Cup Final, where they would lose to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

A two-time Jennings Trophy winner, Osgood would share the award with Mike Vernon in 1996 and Dominik Hasek in 2008.

Osgood's numbers rank amongst the all-time leaders amongst NHL goalies, despite fighting for a starting job for portions of his career.

Still, the numbers piled up. He ranks amongst the all-time leaders in regular-season wins (401, 10th all-time), shutouts (50, tied for 24th), goals-against average (2.49, 24th).

In the playoffs, his numbers were even better, his 74 playoff wins are good for eighth all-time and his 16 playoff shutouts trail only Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy and Curtis Joseph.

Osgood is also one of only five goalies to have scored a goal in an NHL game by actually firing the puck into the opponent's net, doing so against Hartford on March 6, 1996.

I think that might have been the sticking point, TB wanted a longer term, Stamkos/his agent didn't, the 5 year term takes hiim right to UFA. Also being only 21, he'll only be 26 when contract is up and if cap keeps going up/NHL revenues keep improving, a $7.5 cap hit, he might be underpaid if he signs long term.

If you're an unrestricted free agent and haven't signed with an NHL team yet, you're probably having a stressful summer. There are still clubs that need players and others that have to spend money to get to the cap floor, but there are also plenty of free agents still looking for work, some of whom will be left out in the cold once the 2011-12 season starts.

Given it's only July, it might be a little early for players to take the first offers they get and be thankful they got one. The Canucks didn't sign Raffi Torres until the end of August last summer. But Mike Gillis does have a good pitch to make to UFAs that are looking to get their careers back on track. Come to Vancouver. Play on a good team. Surround yourself with quality players. Torres did. Now he's in Phoenix making $1.75 million per and growing red beards like a king.



Chris Drury is one UFA that hasn't found a team yet. This is probably because he scored one goal in 24 games last year with the Rangers while taking up $7,050,000 in cap space.

No, it didn't go well for Drury in New York. Not well at all. In fact, if there was a picture that described how well it went, this might be it:

You can also add injuries to the list of reasons potential suitors should be wary. In June, the New York Post reported that Drury had a "degenerative condition" in his left knee that might keep the Rangers from buying him out. But Drury was bought out anyway, which leaves one to conclude that he's healthy (or at least healthy enough), or that he let the buyout go through because he'd already made enough money off the club and felt pretty bad about it.

For the sake of argument, let's assume he's healthy. If he's not, it's an easy pass.

Let's also assume he won't be too fussy about money, what with having banked a fair bit the last few years. If money's an issue, it's another easy pass.

But if all he cares about is getting a fresh start, then it's at least worth kicking the tires. Drury, 34, is a character guy with a tonne of class, and you can never have enough of those types.

A lot of people thought it was crazy when he was picked to play for Team USA in the 2010 Olympics, with Jeremy Roenick being the most notable critic. And then Drury performed so well that JR was forced to issue an apology.

Said Roenick: "I think being in New York, I owe a huge apology, both in the New York area or across the country, to Chris Drury, who I said probably should not have been there, here in the Olympics. [He's] been a monster for Team USA. He's been one of their best players. I'll eat crow when crow needs to be eaten. This is my national apology to Chris Drury. Besides, even if Drury never rediscovers his scoring touch (he had 37 goals in 06-07 with the Sabres), he can still be an effective penalty killer that can move up to the top six if needed. He's listed as a centre (and is a great faceoff man), but he's played the wing before, which is probably where he'd have to fit on the Canucks. (Unless of course Manny Malhotra struggles, which is entirely possible given the severity of his eye injury.)

Admittedly, Drury signing in Vancouver is a long shot. After he was bought out by the Rangers, the rumour was that he would see if Buffalo was interested in his services. Hopefully he ends up somewhere and finds some success, because he deserves to be remembered as more than one of the biggest free-agent busts in hockey history.

Bert is naturally a big/fat guy though. Plus Bertuzzi wasn't exactly the model athlete back then, even when they had the Goal Button going in full effect. He is more of an athlete now than he ever was.

I don't like Spezza, but that was the best trade Ottawa has ever made. Spezza AND Chara for Yashin. Man, did the Islanders ever make some bad moves back then. They traded Luongo and Jokinen for Kvasha and Parrish, then because they didn't have a goalie they had to draft Rick DiPietro ahead of Gaborik and Heatley. Also the McCabe/Bertuzzi/Ruutu for Linden trade. Shortly after his arrival in December 2009, coach Peter Laviolette instituted what players came to call the "Dry Island." Laviolette asked team members to commit to not drinking for a month, and each player was asked to write his number on a locker room board as a pledge. No. 17 (Carter) and No. 18 (Richards) were absent from the board on the first Dry Island, as well as the estimated five more times the policy was instituted.

In a phone interview Thursday, Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren confirmed that Richards and Carter hadn't put their numbers on the board, but said there had been others who declined. "We carry 23 players and there wasn't 23 numbers up there."




As the captain of the Flyers, not showing much leadership if you refuse to make that pledge.

Except in the case of Richards and Carter it was way beyond having a beer after games. From what I've heard from guys I know that play in the league, it was constant benders till 4am on days before practices and games which not only became an issue affecting performance but many also saw it as a sign of not respecting the coach and management and some veterans on the team.

Their constant partying also apparently started to affect the personal/family lives of some of their teammates as well. This isn't like most of the Canucks who drink and party somewhat responsibly, this was way overboard.

It'll be interesting to see how Carter does now as Columbus is a huge party town with OSU there.

Read between the lines, constant partying/drinking started to affect the lives of teammates personal/family lives. Not signing the pledge repeatedly was a slap in the face of the coach and veteran leaders on the team, ie... Pronger

Well for any team to have to institute a policy like the no drinking pledge repeatedly, you have to realize there is a massive underlying problem for them to come to that with grown adults.

Kris Draper to announce retirement tomorrow it appears

The long and successful NHL playing career of Kris Draper is over.

The Detroit Red Wings have called a news conference for Tuesday in Detroit where Draper will announce his retirement.

In 1157 NHL games, the 40-year-old forward scored 161 goals and added 203 assists, racking up 790 penalty minutes.

A clutch playoff performer, Draper won four Stanley Cups with the Wings. He would also claim the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2003-04 as the NHL's best defensive forward.

Draper also had a long history of representing Canada, starting with the national team from 1988 through 1990 before moving on to the NHL. He would win World Junior gold in 1990 and 1991, World Championship gold and silver in 2003 and 2005 respectively, the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 and laced them up as part of the 2006 Canadian Olympic team in Turin, Italy.

Draper is also only the fifth player after Alex Delvecchio, Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom to play 1,000 games in a Red Wings uniform, finishing with 1,137 games in the red and white.

He was originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the third round, 62nd overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He would play 20 games as a Jet before they traded him to Detroit for $1.
