1st in the league (regardless of games played). Luongo looking a lot better.

Wheres everyone that wanted to sell the team and write off the season in October?

As for Lu, since returning from his layoff hes been playing .934 and as near as my math can tell, 1.88 GAA. has allowed 4 goals once, 3 goals four times, and 2 or less goals ten times. thats good enough for me.

edit: and if we really wanted to get crazy with numbers. if Luongo is playing 1.88 GAA hockey right now, multiply that by 36 (number of games boston has played so far), and you get 68 Goals Against. Luongos current pace is better than Thomas/Rask blowing the doors off everyone's GA.

See, this is why it doesn't bother me that the twins are ranking low in All-Star voting. IMO, I quite like how they can quietly put up points and suddenly be league leaders right under everyone's noses.

To hell with recognition and the constant underrating - I'm just happy these players can obviously "walk-the-walk" even without "talking-the-talk". Keep it up!

It can. But the way I see it, Boston has nothing to prove to the Canucks and should not initiate. I think the Canucks mentality should be 'its just another game out of 82, its no more important than any other regular season game'. This group seems to be good at not getting caught up in the emotions of each game, for better and for worse. But I'm cautiously using the word 'should'

Don't really know how to handle it, seems like a lose-lose situation. If they lose, it won't be exorcising any demons. If they win, it's even that much more painful when it then asks the question, where was that effort in the last 2 games of the SCF.

IMO, Luongo should get the start in Boston. He's played well in the past ten games, especially in the shutout win over Minnesota. Luongo played well to help the team earn a point in a game where San Jose out played them for large stretches.

Did anyone hear the discussion between Don Taylor and Gary Valk on Sportsnet Pacific about which goalie should play on Saturday? I agree with Don on Luongo starting. Valk says that the coach should "throw a bone" to Schneider and play him on Saturday because he's from Boston and friends and family will be watching the game. Huh?

-don't agree with Valk's argument about starting a goalie just because his family and friends want to watch him play.

Yeah, it's a bit of a problem when it's solely based on fan voting.

It's a conundrum for the NHL... how do you get fans to participate in voting without getting results that are clearly skewed?

Only in extreme circumstances would the NHL intervene (aka Vote for Rory) to change (rig) the results... but clearly, the starting lineup there doesn't reflect the best players in the East.

Ikkaku
01-05-2012, 03:27 PM

I wouldn't mind having The Finnish Flash on the team. Dude is at such a high fitness level he could probably play another 2 years. He scored 80 points last year, which was inside the top 10. That's not someone at the end of his career.

It's unfair to compare them but I remember when Lemieux retired, I thought he was still so good that he could've played at a high level for another year or two. The year after the lockout, he led the scoring race a quarter of the way in and then got injured and retired. He could've played til he was 50 if it wasn't for his injuries. Hell, on 24/7, he looked pretty slick on the ice during the Pens staff game.

Speaking of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, with Koivu I think it's more about respect than anything. Guy beat a terrible disease to come back the way he did. Don't forget he also suffered a pretty horrific eye injury and almost lost it like Manny. Also, the guy has a cancer foundation that's raised millions. I mean, think about how much we already like Manny here...I'm sure it's greater than that for those Koivu has played for and with and probably rightly so.

Think about how hostile the crowd is in Montreal and how they gave him a standing O when he returned to Montreal as a Duck.

All this trade BS with my beloved Ducks has me doing a permanent facepalm at the moment. The only person who needs to go ASAP right now is the GM, Bob Murray. For him to even fathom getting rid of any of the core players should automatically get him his walking papers. Yes, this season is in the dumps...BIG TIME. I'm no homer fan, I know this team is underachieving in the worst way. That being said, this shows me just how stupid of a GM Murray is. ONE HALF OF A SHIT SEASON, EVERYONE'S GOTTA GO! Seriously? As much as Anaheim is underachieving now, they were overachieving last season. Their top D pairing of Visnovsky/Lydman both had career years, and that masked the problems they have on defence. Both Visnovsky and Lydman are IMO, past their primes, Beauchemin is their only reliable defenceman, and Fowler and Sbisa are still young, still learning, and still making mistakes. It takes time! But genius Bob Murray trades away our next best D prospect in Gardiner along with Lupul, for Beauchemin. The top line of RPG did what they were supposed to, and Corey Perry felt like going beast mode on everyone. Secondary scoring doesn't exist past Teemu Selanne, all Koivu and Blake do is get in his way (don't believe me? Check out their point totals for guys making 4 F'ING MIL). No third line, no fourth line. Hiller carried them through the first half of last season, and Perry and Selanne got them through the last half. Now that all these problems are becoming pretty evident, what has Murray done to fix them? OH RIGHT, get a bunch of plugs. Hagman? Gordon? Cogliano? Granted, the owners won't let him spend to the cap ceiling, but he seriously makes some idiot moves. Yes we were desparate for D last season, but it cost us D down the road, and that SECONDARY SCORING they need right now (Lupul & Gardiner for Beauchemin). DSP and Etem are the future, and a 2nd line that should be built around Bobby Ryan is in order. They'll have quite a bit of salary coming off the books next year, and they can afford to jettison guys like Lydman or Visnovsky for draft picks or whatever. I'd rather see my team suffer for a while and come back strong, than be mired in mediocrity because of some numbskull GM thinks we can win every season.

maybe Tanev, or Sauve but i'd pass on Parent, Baumgartner, and the rest. Ballard is here for depth and he is more than capable of doing that on the 3rd pairing. I will reserve any further judgment on Ballard's play until after we've seen what he will do in this year's playoffs.

Lu should get the start.
He's playing well right now and he needs to redeem himself.

Should be Lu. AV stuck with Schnoo when he was hot. No reason he shouldn't do the same with Luongo.

These. Especially what Ronin said.

I actually think this... gives Luongo a chance to avoid the tons of media questions before the game... I'm sure they're sick of the media grilling them already... everyone just wants to get out there and show the haters that they can get the job done.

AV's "reason" to start Cory seems like a pretty lame/weak reason imo

Management probably thinks that playing Luu is too big a risk for his fragile psyche especially since we're only halfway through the season. Win big in Boston with Schneids, great. Lose big, Luu still keeps his confidence. Lose big in Boston with Luu, bad times.

It's an interesting decision to start Schneids. If your theory is true, then there is some huge problem with Lu going forward (fragile psyche). Who says another team can't light him up like the Hawks and Bruins? If anything, it's Lu that has to get himself out of this notion he got himself in. Hence, I think Lu should play tomorrow. Schneider will have every opportunity to play in his hometown in the future.

Lu has played well in the past 10 games to get the start. Unless of course management is showcasing Schneids to Eastern teams in anticipation of a trade. But that seems unlikely to happen.

So this decision confuses me. I don't remember the last time a coach based his decision to start a player based on his hometown preference. So does this mean Albert gets to play on the first line with Sedins because he is also from Boston?:suspicious:

look at how Boston has been playing lately. They very well could light the canucks up for 6 goals. What would that do to Lu? If it happens to Cory, oh well. If it happens to Lu that could turn him into Cloutier.

Combine that with how absolutely terrible Lu plays in morning games. I think its the right call.

Bonka

our favorite guy, Kevin Weekes (lol)...and his Goalie Power Rankings

1. BOSTON BRUINS Tim Thomas. Tuukka Rask. NHL's best team. Best tandem. Period.

2. NEW YORK RANGERS Henrik Lundqvist is off to best start of his career and came up big in the Winter Classic with that penalty-shot save on Daniel Briere. Martin Biron has been awesome in his role. Without the points in the games he started, NYR may not be in the high-rent district of the Eastern Conference.

3. ST. LOUIS BLUES Can Brian Elliott come full circle and become an all-star in the city where he started his career? Jaroslav Halak has adjusted his attitude, mindset and it is no surprise his play has improved under head coach Ken Hitchcock. Excellent 1-2 punch.

4. MINNESOTA WILD The Wild have slipped lately, but Niklas Backstrom's still really good. Josh Harding has played his best hockey in the NHL to this point of the season.

5. VANCOUVER CANUCKS Roberto Luongo has found his groove and his game coming off a nice shutout of the Wild. Cory Schneider has been excellent. As I said last year on HNIC, if I'm Steve Yzerman, I'm burning up Mike Gills' cellphone to try to pry him from the beautiful Left Coast.

6. DETROIT RED WINGS Okay, these rankings are based on play of the tandems. However, I'll make an exception for the fact that Jimmy Howard leads the NHL in victories. Ty Conklin still gives the Red Wings a chance, when he plays, but ice time is tough to come by with Howard being this good so far.

7. SAN JOSE SHARKS Antti Niemi and Thomas Greiss have identical .918 save percentages. That's a very good number for the Sharks and gives them a chance to win on most nights.

8. DALLAS STARS Dallas relieved is relieved their ace, Kari Lehtonen, is back from injury. He was the key to their great start. Richard Bachman came in and played very well - unfortunately for Andrew Raycroft, who was waived and sent to the AHL.

9. LOS ANGELES KINGS Jonathan Quick has been one of the NHL's best so far and leads with the NHL with five shutouts. Jonathan Bernier has great potential but, like Conklin in Detroit, it is tough to find him ice time with Quick playing this well.

10. PHOENIX COYOTES Mike Smith is back from injury and the 'Yotes hope he continues the form from his good start to the season. Jason Labarbera can give them a chance to win, too.

11. EDMONTON OILERS Nikolai Khabibulin has stolen some games and given the young Oilers the confidence to make plays offensively. Devan Dubnyk has played some good games and, though a lack of consistent starts is understandable considering Khabibulin's play, it has made it tougher for him to find his rhythm.

12. NASHVILLE PREDATORS Pekka Rinne has played well, but not quite the same consistent level he played at last year. Anders Lindback? He can play. I'm told from sources that the Predators won't trade him this year, though.

13. COLORADO AVALANCHE Jean-Sebastian Gigeure has played very well this year, exceeding expectations. Semyon Varlamov, too, is very talented, but still looking for his consistency.

14. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS Marc-Andre Fleury may be the forgotten man, but no Penguin is more valuable given all the injuries last year and this year. Brent Johnson can play, but he is just getting fewer chances.

15. FLORIDA PANTHERS Jose Theodore has played very well this year. He has been consistent and still has game. Scott Clemmensen has played fairly well and had a big game with 38 saves in a 3-2 loss to NYR.

16. MONTREAL CANADIENS Carey Price can and needs to be the best Hab on the ice every game for them to have a chance. Peter Budaj can play well when he gets a chance. Speaking to players on the team, they really appreciate Budaj's energy and professionalism.

17. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS Corey Crawford hasn't played as well as he did last year, but the Blackhawks' defensive detail and power play have impacted that. Ray Emery has been an excellent fit for this team and thrived when Crawford was slumping.

18. WASHINGTON CAPITALS Tomas Vokoun is on a nice stretch right now and that's welcome news in D.C. Michal Neuvirth has struggled this year. But he is very talented and can definitely play in this league.

19. CALGARY FLAMES Mikka Kiprusoff plays his tail off every night. And Leland Irving finally gets his real chance in the show and has played well (I know ... This was written just before the 9-0 beatdown in Beantown).

20. WINNIPEG JETS Ondrej Pavlec played well during a lengthy home stretch. But he has since fallen victim to the different road game the Jets play. Chris Mason has played very well, his personal playoff beard has brought him good luck and a 4-0 loss in Toronto was his first defeat in a while.

21. BUFFALO SABRES Lindy Ruff says he's going to play Ryan Miller more to get him going. The Sabres need this. Jhonas Enroth has proven he can help them get points, but Buffalo needs to defend better around the net. Teams have an all-access pass there right now.

22. PHILADELPHIA FLYERS Ilya Bryzagalov didn't start the Winter Classic, but needs to start finding the form he showed in Anaheim and Phoenix. Sergei Bobrovsky, only 22 and with a very good upside, has played very well so far this year.

23. NEW JERSEY DEVILS Martin Brodeur's play and starts are declining. Devils made very good move to bring Johan Hedberg back.
24. NEW YORK ISLANDERS Al Montoya has played well and Evgeni Nabokov is playing well, too. It's a long road for him to come back from Russia and then be inactive last year.

25. TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS James Reimer is still trying to find his game and Jonas Gustavsson is playing better and coming off a shutout of the Jets. If the Leafs get the goaltending they need, they can make the playoffs.

26. ANAHEIM DUCKS Jonas Hiller doesn't look like himself this year at all. Dan Ellis can play, but they're determined to get Hiller going.

27. CAROLINA HURRICANES Cam Ward can and needs to be better. He hasn't stolen any wins this year and his number's should never be where they are, even if they played short-handed for 10 minutes a game. I know how good this guy can be. Justin Peters played his butt off in a tough loss at Pittsburgh.

28. OTTAWA SENATORS Craig Anderson has played well, considering the Senators play somewhat of a high-risk game. Alex Auld is still effective, but Robin Lehner is waiting in wings in Binghamton.

29. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS Curtis Sanford has played well, considering he was playing in the AHL with Hamilton Bulldogs last year. How good does Steve Mason really want to be? He can be a Top 5 if he works for it, but is performing below his skill set.

30. TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING I never like counting Dwayne Roloson out, but I'm not sure if he will regain his amazing form of the first half of last spring. Mathieu Garon has played fairly well, but the Bolts need a goalie for the immediate and long term.

Good call by AV. Cory gets to play in front of his family and friends. Nothing wrong with the decision. What happens in front of him is more a concern. I really hope the Bruins don't ass rape our pretty boys. Please, no injuries.

The fans will be all pumped up, that's for sure.

the only people who spout off about this being a big deal are the canuck and luongo haters looking for a reason to discredit '7uongo" or whatever they all call him. To canuck fans, and most knowledgeable hockey fans its really a non issue beyond a quick thought.

ya it could be all a big neat media story with van and boston going head to head full power, but by next week it isnt anything more than just 1/82nd of the season. the simple fact that cbc/tsn didnt pick the game up, while a little surprising, shows they dont think much of it. the playoffs are where the story is written. no one cared that luongo won regular season games against chicago until we beat them in round 1 last year.

i have no doubt the nhlpa is blocking the realignment plan as early posturing for the cba negotiations and will give in to them for some sort of concession from the league in their favor.

that being said i really dont like the plan either. having one conference all within bicycle riding distance and one the size of half the continent is BS eastern bias. not to mention the 7 vs 8 teams.

!Nhan

either way the teams out east will ALWAYS be closer to each other because of the greater number of cities in the area. even now the new york teams are so close, as well as the penn state teams as well.

I'm watching the highlights from last years SCF..

The series changer was either the Rome hit, or when Edler's stick breaks in the beginning of the second period in the third game, leading to a Ference goal.

Although I thought Luongo deserved the game,
Schneider isn't a bad choice either. Schneider may get more opportunities in the future,
but let's just assume he will be with Vancouver longer, or at least stays in the west conference.
It might be a long while before he plays in Boston again.
Although AV's reasoning sounds weak, based on Schneider being a capable goalie as well, there wasn't a wrong decision.

And for those that think it was a coward decision... :fuckthatshit:
This is just a game for 2 pts. Nothing more, nothing less.
Redemption is overrated, especially if it's a team from the other conference.

i'd rather get beat up physically and lose rather than not get beat up and lose 9-0...

lol, if we're injured, that lasts more than one game.
A 9-0 lost is just 2 points gone.

Wrong. It was when Hamhuis got injured, then both Edler and Ehrhoff got injured. When your best d-man is out for the series and then your next two best d-men get injuries as well you're toast. I can confidently say if none of those 3 got injured we would have won.

They definitely will show you clips of the SCF.
Media wants to hype this game up as much as they can.
And given it's in Boston, they're gonna rub it in Canucks face as much as they can.

But I'm pretty sure the Canucks' goal is to treat this like any other game in the regular season.
There's 2 points up to grab. That's all this game is about. That's how I see it as well.
Putting any more emotion or stake on this is just a waste of energy.

Wrong. The guy asked what the series changer was. IMO, injuries are an excuse. Every team has them. It's up to the rest of the guys to play around those injuries. Game 3 was 0-0 when Rome KO'd Horton, the Bruins then scored 8 goals in the next 2 periods 2 of them SHG's. If you wanna blame injuries, The Bruins were without Horton and Savard.
