He makes more than Burrows, has a greater injury risk and is not strong along the boards. Not a huge amount of upside on this guy. I'd rather go after a guy like JP Dumont if I needed someone like Sturm.

He is risky, but his salary would be around the same as Sturm. I'd rather have a natural RW at this point. Dumont played on a very defensive team too, so his numbers are skewed and he is a better passer than Sturm. Feel free to put your numbers in too, I don't mind hockey debates.

So Ballard wants out?
I mean ya, we all figured he would but does this make it official?
No.
It means that Gillis is not going to trade Ballard this summer since a lot of people have been saying that we shouldn't hold onto a 4.2 mil cap hit for a player that doesn't even play.
I'm not sure if Ballard wants to stay on the team but Gillis is just reassuring everything that he won't go right now.

Didn't expect all this hate for Marco Sturm, a super fast, steady 20+ goal scoring WINGER until last year. You can n ame all the centres you want, they don't need one. They need a winger, and not Raffi Torres, to play with Kesler.

Baumgartner has been in the Canucks farm team FOREVER, and this includes after he gets traded and brought back. He clearly does not mind being an AHLer for life.
After he signed that big contract with Philly and then got sent down to the farm and eventually traded back to the Canucks, they interviewed him in Manitoba about it and he said "I don't mind, I'm getting paid to play hockey."
Which is the good mindset to have.
But I'm surprised he doesn't try to play over in Europe where he could get paid more.

If he puts up at least 20 goals this season then I guess it wouldn't been a bad deal. I guess people are hating because we already have players like Sturm (ie. Samuelsson, Raymond, etc). We need more grit and a bonafied top 6er as they say, it's not gonna come cheap though. If Sturm can stay healthy, he could really help out or second PP unit.

True enough, but I think to get a player like that it will have to be done through trading, not free agency. Maybe they signed Sturm to make someone else (ie Samuelsson, Raymond, etc) more expendable... (hopefully not Samuelsson)

I agree with this statement. Top 6 forward will be most likely aquired through trade. We have been talking to NYR about Dubinsky and WPG about Ladd. Dubinsky will be easier to get, 'specially if Richards goes to NYR.

Everyone is complaining that we didn't get a top 6 forward today. Considering the contracts that were handed out, if you were Mike Gillis, would you have signed Leino to a 6-year deal? Or would you have paid Joel Ward $12 million for one good series in the playoffs?
If you look at what the teams in the West did over the past week, did any team actually improve? I would say that only Chicago did which means they'll challenge Detroit for top spot in the Central. Sure, LA has Richards, but you know what? They don't have any wingers to play with their centres.

Wow that's a lot of ifs
I agree. We don't need anymore of these kinda-2nd-line-scorer-but-also-kinda-3rd-line-checkers.
We need either a true 2nd line scorer or a true 3rd line checker.

Ughhhh not sure about the Dubinsky part.
We're already jam packed with centres. Why on earth would we get another one?!
And as for Ladd, that may be a possibility but what would we give up?

Mike Richards was traded to the Kings a bit over a week ago. LA is gonna be a dangerous team this year with Richards, Kopitar, and Jarret Stoll down the middle

Although we were only 1 win away, we can always make adjustments to make our team better. We need a clutch player who can build some chemistry with kesler on that second line an really step it up in the playoffs.

Lots of people knocking the Sturm signing. Here is his scouting report from NHL Forecaster.
ASSETS: Has excellent speed and puck-handling skills. Possesses good hockey sense and sees the ice very well. His speed makes him a special-teams weapon. Plays well in all three zones.
FLAWS: Isn't overly big and can get pushed around. Hasn't put up the numbers expected of him in his career. Doesn't show a lot of offensive consistency. Is injury-prone.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Speedy, yet fragile veteran winger.

The cap floor is around where the ceiling was after the lockout - didn't take long. Now you have teams handing out ridiculous contracts just to reach the cap floor. Good job NHL.
It's a much healthier league that's bringing in more money than before.
NHL Revenue:
2005-06 1.8B
2010-11 2.9B
Plus, under the CBA, players get 57% of league revenue, and any excess goes into escrow. So who cares what the salary numbers are? And with the cap, you don't get 3-4 teams spending to buy a cup. Instead, you have to earn it by managing your team properly. Great job NHL.

Penner is useless. He had one good year in Anaheim's run to the finals and has had a half-season of good hockey ever since. They traded arguably one of their best prospects (Schenn) and a gritty heart-and-soul player (Simmonds) for Richards which is a toss-up in terms of value.
Everyone needs to relax. Besides, after last season, I don't care about what the Canucks do in the regular season so long as they make the playoffs playing well (whether that means a lower or higher seed - it doesn't matter.)
status quo does not always pan out. Philly was 2 wins away in 2010 and look at what happened to them the following year.
You're right it doesn't. In the summer of 1994, we traded for Alex Mogilny, but we got bounced in the 2nd round. But Philly's problems last year were goaltending and a division in the locker room between Pronger and Richards. As far as I know, we don't have any divisions in the locker room and we still have the league's best goaltending duo.

I don't understand why everyone is so pissed off why Gillis didn't want to make some big moves. Honestly I'm happy he didn't, in order to make a splash he would of had to over pay for a decent player for a ridiculous length contract. So he signed Sturm good hes a decent player and we didn't pay much for him. If it works awesome but if it doesn't it's only one year and we can always trade him as well.
Team's over paying right now are only handicapping them selves for years to come and remember our core is signed we just need a couple pieces which Gillis will still work on which will benefit us in the future and not the player.

Honestly, it's a win win situation for us in signing Sturm. If he plays to the way he was before, and he clicks with Kesler or any other players. We gain. If he sucked and skated slower than Marc Choinard, then we'll just waive his ass and have Aquilini pay for his salary to play for the Wolves.
Plus, I don't know what's the fuss with losing Torres? Whether the Canucks were pushed around or not, Torres didn't do anything to push back. He doesn't even kill penalties.
I'm probably glad that we lost players like Glass and Torres because our bottom six needs more of players who can actually play more offensive and can allow us to skate end to end.

They need to sign Weber to a long-term contract and can't afford Suter, Weber, and Franson - that would be my guess.

Just under $4.6 million
hmm.. fairly healthy chunk of money to play with.
Nashvilles current cap is at 35million. Franson still had a year left before rfa and made less than lebda. Id consider him better than lebda atm and has a brighter future as well. Lombardi made more but hes still better than both the players they got. Its like a Nhl 11 trade, bunch of crap for something better.

After the '03 Cup finals, Kariya told the fans he'd bring a Cup to the OC in 2004, and had a verbal contract with the GM. Then he broke his word, took a paycut and signed with Colorado because he thought he had a better chance there what with Selanne going there too. Glad that my boys won the Cup in '07 without that backstabbing goof.
How old are you? Who's your son(s) that play on that team? :fullofwin:

Nashville - Toronto trade was pure salary dump by Nashville. Traded Lombardi who still has PCS who is owed 7 mill over two years so they can afford Weber and Suter.

just read an article about torres' departure from vancouver. he's very grateful for the opportunity that he was given here and would have loved to stay but it was a decision made in the best interest of his family as a whole. i wish him luck! gonna miss those huge hits from him :(

lol you are twisting the story to one side... he promised the cup next year, and had a verbal agreement of 8mill a year, IF they were able to gain peices, such as selanne to the team to win the cup, but the gm didnt sign anyone, and he wanted a 10mill/yr contract, they said no so he left, took a huge paycut of 1mill to play with his friend selanne in colorado

as true as this is. i'm still curious to see what mg does with coho. been 4 years since he's been drafted. the rest of his class is already at least 2 years into their nhl careers, if not played right after being drafted. given that some of those teams were in desperate need of players to fill roster/add talent. mg needs to decide what to do with coho. either work him into the line up, give him solid minutes along with decent line mates to prove his worth, or trade him while he's still considered an asset still. he's literally rotting sitting in the minors for so long.
it used to not bother me so much because he was still a prospect and we had forwards to fill his position. i assumed pretty soon he would have a full time spot in the line up. looks like this season he'll be playing shit minutes on the 4th line for us once and a while and having fun in the AHL again.
just my 0.02
It's because our team is stacked down the middle right now. Hank -> Kes -> Manny -> Lappy . CoHo just doesn't have a spot as an offensive centreman right now.

our center is wayyy too stacked all 4 centermen can win big faceoffs even if it is after 2 yrs when lappy and malhotra contract expires...
i dont cody's talent to be wasted better to let him shine else where
if the jets dont mind we accept bogosian for cody + pick :troll:

I kinda feel bad for Coho, there's no room for a centre in the top 6 for another 5 years unless he's willing to play on the wing. The kid isn't necessarily gonna be a bust imo, but i just don't see him living up to the expectations that people initially had.

We need a top 6. CoHo is a top 6 guy. I'm thinking he gets his shot this season. Maybe hoping is a better word...

he does that on the pp with sedins but kesler playing center is where he excel
cody is a valueble spare part of this team. "SPARE part"

So you're saying move Kesler to RW and CoHo to center? One problem with that:
CoHo struggles with faceoffs.
