I remember the Blues had a pretty impressive streak until they sucked for like 5 or 6 years. 25 years was their streak that ended in 03/04 and zero cups to show for it. Detroit on the other hand 21 in a row and 4 cups during that streak. Damn bastards =\

One more shutout for Roberto Luongo and he will have 60 in his career.
He will be just the 16th goalie in the history of the NHL to have reached 60 shutouts.
He'll join a list that includes names like Brodeur, Sawchuk, Hasek, Belfour, Roy, Esposito, and Jacques Plante.
Luongo has played 724 games so far...Patrick Roy played 1029 and had 66 career shutouts. Luongo just needs 7 more to catch him on the all time list.
If Luongo can keep averaging 4 shutouts a year for the next 3 seasons...he will be right behind Tony Esposito who had 76 career shutouts and be top ten all time.
Luongo is already tied for 2nd all time with Bernie Parent for wins in a season (Brodeur had 1 more).
As well, with tonight's win, Luongo surpasses Hall of Famer Gump Worsley for all time wins in the NHL and is 17th in history. He'll need another 20 wins to pass Rogie Vachon.
2 more 30 win seasons and Luongo will surpass Dominic Hasek and a slew of others, and move in to the top ten behind Chris Osgood and his idol Grant Fuhr. There's a strong statistical chance that Luongo becomes just the 11th goaltender in NHL history to have 400 wins.
Some interesting stats on Luongo I read on CDC! Guys been playing great, here's hoping he can keep the ball rolling through the playoffs.

If there's one thing Lu has going for him, it's that he wants to win. I know that everyone probably wants to win in the NHL but some of them appear more indifferent than others. Whenever Luongo loses, you can see how pissed he is all over his face and in his attitude.
As you can see from his stats, Lu has a shot to be one of the best goalies to ever play the game. Provided he stays away from injury, he could reach 400 by the time he's 34. Considering how many old timer goalies are playing in the league, it isn't out of the question Luongo could play til he's 40. Whether it's with the Canucks or not, he might even hit 500 wins. He just needs to stay in condition and he could play for a long ass time. With the Canucks and their trainers working as hard as they do, they could keep these guys in elite shape til their late 30s.
460 wins puts Lu 4th all time. He's got 337. 30 wins a season and that's just 4 seasons. He'll be 35-36 and already 4th all time.
If you look at the Canucks salary structure as it is now, 3 core players are signed for another 4 seasons (Kesler, Bieksa, Hamhuis) with Booth another 3. I have little doubt the Sedins will go elsewhere when their current deals are up so it isn't unreasonable to think the Canucks are pretty much like this for at least another 2-3 seasons.

Those are nice stats. Canucks are going to be a strong team for years to come.
So there's a good chance for Luongo to reach those goals.

I wouldn't say that is far fetched. Ultimately, it may be a GM decision and not the Sedins. IF Sedin production decline, it would be hard to justify signing them to another long-term contract unless they took a sizable pay cut? Wouldn't be much different than parting with Naslund.

dont feel bad. at the start of last season i predicted the canucks would make the finals. but would only win if schnieder played the final round.

I don't disagree that its a possibility, but a very slim one IMO and certainly not something that will happen with 'little doubt'. For 2 seasons after this one, they will still be elite players. Their next contract will maybe be 3-5 years long to take them to possible retirement, and I am sure their 'decline in ability' will be taken into account both from a management and player persepctive and what the caphit number will be--it will not be higher than it is now especially if it is a longterm deal to take them into retirement. Parting with Naslund was completely different IMO. I see that more as Naslund getting run out of Vancouver and he lost the will to play the game, esp AV's game at that time. Naslund's final years of production would be acceptable at 3-4M/season had the Canucks chosen to even offer him a contract but its clear MG wanted a clean slate.
The Sedins are your franchise players and the face of the Canucks, they have shown they are willing to take a hometown discount and have also shown that they wanted to finish their careers as Canucks prior to MG saying he doesn't do those types of deals (a year before giving Lu his lifetime contract). If given a second chance, I think today's MG signs the Sedins to their 12 year deals
I'm not worried about their production for the next few years. They were both on fire at the beginning of the season, and only fell off the scoring leader list since ~January. Their production potential is still there, they are just not tapping into it right now for whatever reason. There are different reasons you can subscribe to explain this, but IMO I don't think a natural decline in their output ranks up high on that list at this point.

They have more hockey in them to play and all players have slumps. Sedins are having one right now.
Its not just the Sedins "underachieving" this season. Heatley and Thornton are some examples of having a bad season.

We all know the canucks haven't played their best hockey over the entire season this year and yet, we're 2nd in the west and just 2 points behind the Blues.
We all remember in Naslund's final year, the whole team slumped hard and missed the playoffs. I think the score in our final game of the season was 7-1 in favour of Calgary, IIRC.
If the Sedins/Burrows AND Kesler slumping = 2nd place finish in the west, then yeah, I'd say that's a lot better than the situation we had during Naslund's decline. I don't foresee MG giving up on back to back Art Ross Trophy winners because of one sloppy season.

City says no live site celebrations for this year's playoff run
In a rather lame but precautionary move the City of Vancouver has decided to completely cancel any sort of viewing party in downtown Vancouver for the NHL playoffs. There were serious talks about viewing parties at BC Place, however, it looks like this won’t happen. At least not in the early rounds. Instead the City of Vancouver plans to host public viewing of games at community centres. Who wants to get drunk at a community centre? Okay not get hammered to the point of no return when mob mentality set in but a community centre doesn’t fit the occasion. High school formal, sure but not a playoff viewing party.
The City of Vancouver said they don’t want to shut down all celebrations during large events, but they want people to celebrate responsibly to minimize the risk to the public so as to avoid the events during the Stanley Cup final last year.
The City’s plans include implementing ideas such as allowing public viewing of games and celebrations at community centres, bars, pubs, and maybe theatres, should the Canucks advance into third and fourth rounds of the playoffs. But no crowds would be allowed downtown.
There will be no outside screens to watch the game.
The City said they are considering block parties, but those would have to be organized by an event planner and no alcohol would be allowed.
The Vancouver Canucks will be involved and have partnered with the City. They will also be matching the City’s funding for the celebrations, which could be between $50,000 to $100,000.

At the same time, will this stop people from POURING into downtown after games, even in the early rounds like last year?
but back on the Canucks..
Slumping or not, its 3w in a row.
but thats not the important stat. its how to play back to standards. Last nights game isn't 2011/2012 or even 2010/2011 Canucks hockey

from cknw
The city is also encouraging smaller events at pubs and restaurants, and alcohol-free events at community centres.
It also wants to see events around Vancouver, perhaps at Trout Lake or Hillcrest.
Key parts of the plan will include limiting alcohol and reducing crowds in the downtown core.
As for the police, steps have already been taken to improve communication between forces, including having a large events liason officer.
wow...NO FUN VANCOUVER
what are they gonna do? road block into downtown? shut down skytrain going downtown? stop it a stadium station?

Manny Malhotra named as a 2012 Masterton Nominee
Vancouver, B.C. -Manny Malhotra was been nominated by the Vancouver chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association as the Canucks nominee for the Masterton Trophy which is awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
"It's obviously very special — especially with what the Masterton stands for," said Malhotra. "You look back at the guys who have won in the past and what they've overcome and triumphed over in very serious situations. To be thought of in that regard, is very humbling to me. Whether I win or not is irrelevant. Being held in that regard is pretty special to me."
It's been a special challenge for Malhotra to recover from a March 16, 2011 incident when a deflected puck struck him during a game against the Colorado Avalanche and four subsequent procedures on the injured eye. He has maintained dominance in the faceoff circle with a 58.2 per cent efficiency — sixth in the NHL — and has seven goals and 18 points in 73 games.
"Manny as a person, is one of the best individuals I've ever met in my life as far as dealing with and getting it," said Canucks coach Alain Vigneault.
IMO, Mason Raymond could have been our nominee too

Can Hitchcock not win the Jack Adams this year?
Bylsma gets a good look for me keeping the Pens in the thick of things without Sid. But Hitchcock takes coach of the year hands down. If Halak or Elliot win anything, they should give that to Hitch as well

What John Furlong did to turn the city into a gigantic party was amazing. albeit that event ended in glory rather than upset. He comes in a supports the "block parties" to prevent large groups in the downtown core.
So, after winning 3 rounds and having people pour onto robson/granville was amazing. They will send people home now. All this takes is one group to confront a few officiers and depending on the crowd and how intoxicated they are, and a few events could happen right away

Hitchcock wins. No question.
When he took over the team, there was a very noticible difference in their play and they haven't looked back since. Those other coaches would win if he wasn't in the running but I don't think it's even a contest. They were below 500 before him. Now they're 1st...and incredbly consistent.

There are no star players on the blues but there are some clutch talented players (backes, perron, oshie, peitrangelo, berglund, mcdonald, steen). Dont forget alex pietrangelo could be top 5 d-man this year. Some even say he should get nominated for the norris

So then we're judging star quality on the premise of points alone, right?
If that's the case, I completely agree. On the stats sheet, their forward and D-men look to be pretty average to good players but not stars.
However, if you were to judge them on star performances (that doesn't reflect on points), I would argue that a lot of the players mentioned above would be considered star players.
Not mention goaltending.

I'm more concerned with the powerplay than overall scoring. Henrik said it himself something along the lines of "don't expect blowout games from us. We want to play a tight game and capitalize on the opponents mistakes"
I think burr needs to go back with henrik. He's the only person after Daniel that has chemistry with henrik.

...I get what you are saying, but seriously...............
Anyway, I agree; Schneider doesn't have very much big-game experience; I do recall him getting game 6 in the Chicago series and he ended up getting pulled. There simply isn't that great of a sample size for me to be able to put full trust into Schneider, but I obviously like him as relief to Luongo...I only hope that we can use Schneider in the playoffs to give Luongo some rest, because obviously they are more like 1A and 1B right now.

I think the Canucks should alternate play the goalies for the playoffs. Game 1,3,5 (if needed) for Lu, and game 2,4,6 (if needed) for Cory. Screw with the go with the #1 goalie - if we win the cup just because we gave more rest to the goalies, all the better.

I don't think this has ever been done in history.
They always go with either #1 goalie or the hottest goalie.
There's no room for risk and experimentation in the playoffs.

Well it's time to make history then :fuckyea:
But in all seriousness, it blows my mind how Lu can be a world class goaltender at home and then becomes a guy who looks like he played goaltender for the first time during away games...

Are you talking about game 6 last year [i think] where he played the puck twice and Chicago scored twice?
He played fairly well in that game IMO [if he didn't play the puck that is lol]
yep
very brutal
we score, then cory fucks up and they tie it up
then the penalty shot leg cramp/muscle pull
it was like it was scripted or something

I was at the game today and man it was hard to watch. Aside from the higgins goal it was a very boring game. I mean from the 2nd period onward the canucks weren't even fore checking.

Was at game too.... other than the 1st period with the goal and the Booth fight :fuckyea:.....
2nd period on we were outplayed and the amount of shots we gave up were :heckno:
Won't complain much though.... I'll take the win, and on to the next one!

How about St. Louis...Do they go with Elliot or Halak? They've called Halak their 1A all season, though their 1B, Elliot, has outperformed him and leads the league with 9 shutouts in just 36 games and is coming off 3 shutouts in a row...

avs moves are questionable. when schneider was on his hot streak and carried the team while luongos bed was moistens with his out shit. he found any excuse to pull schneid and made luongo the #1 again.
hodsgon wins rookie of the month , then gets promoted to the 4th line???
raymond was playing his worse hockey then gets promoted to the 1st line? then was the extra attacker that same game??? then gets benched the next game...
think tanev is the most defensively sound defencemen on the team... he just needs to shoot more! all our d seem to be reluctant to shoot...
k end of rant.

Realistically, history would indicate Luongo will shit the bed eventually through the playoffs,
and I don't think AV would hesitate this time to put in Schneider.
I could imagine MG would personally step in and make that call if necessary.
There's no time to experiment, and I'm sure everybody's thinking we would at least
have had a better chance to win the cup last year if Schneider was in net.
But I'll still give Luongo first dibs with his experience, and wait until he blows it before we play Schneider.
While Schneider comes in here and there to play games, and he performs well even against top tier teams,
he hasn't done so in long stretch of games.
There's no saying Luongo couldn't have done the same as well.
Teams don't study backup goalies as much, and playing few games here and there won't reveal as many holes in the goalie's game.

That was the states entering this game. It was shown on Sportsnet that Schneider is now .969 after this game and as no.1 in SV and no.5 in GAA
Hope we will get to see Schneider play in the playoff his year!
lol he would have had to have made close to 1000 saves to jump that much in save percentage

I care more about Kesler flipping the switch for the playoffs. Since the trade deadline he's got like 4 pts in 15 games. While Pahlsson has 7 since coming here. Sure, you could say with games like last night that Burr and Kes were eating up most of the pk time, but you would imagine after acquiring Pahlsson that it would allow Kes to play less of a shut down role and focus more on scoring.

Pretty sure one year when the canucks played the Avalanche in the playoffs against Patrick Roy and Co. the nucks went with alternating goalies though they still lost.

Every time I think of John Furlong I can't help but laugh at his French during the olympics :lol
I read his book, Patriotic Hearts, and Furlong felt REALLY bad about his French. He was in a lose-lose situation: cater to the French crowd and have his French laughed at, or minimize the French content and have the French complain.

Since the PP keeps slipping, where do you see it at the end of the regular season? We're currently 4th, at 20.6%. I say we drop down to 6th.

I think if we score 3 more PP goals, we can jump back to 2/3 overall.
Currently, we are 23G out of 117 PP chances.
Don't get it, we are one of the top teams in the NHL yet we are at the very bottom for PP chances. Fucking refs...

yes true Avs were stacked but I rmb the series being 2-2 until we shat the bed in the last two games to lose 4-2

Ya that's because Cloutier was an up-and-comer goalie who has really proven himself yet so they decided to go with the more experienced veteran goalie.

The Vancouver Canucks have announced that more than 1,000 single-game tickets for all home games in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs will go on sale this Saturday, March 31, at 10 a.m.
The tickets will be for sale via telephone or internet only. Fans can buy the tickets online at canucks.com/tickets or by calling Ticketmaster at 1-855-523-6800. Two days later, on Monday, April 2, tickets will be available at the Rogers Arena Box Office and Ticketmaster Ticket Centres based on availability. Tickets will be distributed once the Round 1 game schedule is confirmed and announced.
Ticket prices for Round 1 start at $135. One year ago at this time, the Canucks website advertised Round 1 tickets starting at $90 — representing a 50 per cent increase.
Based on availability, each household will be eligible to purchase a maximum of four tickets per game.
All present Canucks ticket holders can buy their playoff tickets in advance of the public on-sale as part of their benefits package. Playoff Paks for Round 1 and 2 will also be available to Canucks Group Leaders, Power Play Pak buyers, Blue Line wait list members and other members of the Canucks family.
