The Official 2011/2012 Canucks Thread
Yes there were times when McLean was very average, but he was a likeable guy. Lu has a huge ego and when he loses, he's not really accountable for his own mistakes. Also, I certainly can cut McLean some slack after 94 because one of his own teammates was sleeping with his wife.

Could you imagine how frazzled Lu would be if Alberts was banging his wife? lol

I predict Loungo will be traded for a top six winger if he continues his downward spiral. Cory seems ready to be a number one goaltender and he doesnt get emotionally tied. He has no sub par months either. Hes steady and gets the job done.

Yeah he has a NMC/NTC. Can't remember which.
Gillis has said in the past he'll acknowledge NTC's and won't ask a player to waive it.
So unless Lu wants out, its his call.

There was this one save where Luongo was on his belly, and he actually lifted his toe awkwardly

But I can't really remember... if anyone knows what I'm talking about and has that clip,

I wouldnt be quick to throw Luongo out of the city, but i hope AV lets him compete for his job with Cory
Look at how Tim Thomas stole the job from Rask last year. And this was when Rask was predicted to win the Vezina last year pretty much from every analyst. Tim Thomas proceeded to have his greatest year ever.
By compete, i hope AV actually plays whoever is performing. Not playing one over the other because he'll be butthurt otherwise.

I almost wish Lu would lose the number one spot just so another goalie can come in, "fail" under the scrutiny of most Canucks fans and only then would they realize what they had in him...
Vezina finalists are a dime a dozen ya know.
Best record over the past 5 years? Only because of the team in front of him my friend!
Taking over for Brodeur and winning Olympic Gold? Bah! That team would have won with anyone in net!
I'm not saying Lu is perfect, he's not. Point is, no goalie is. He's had a long, stellar career as a #1 goaltender. I was ultra stoked when I heard we acquired him. I'm sure many of you were. I knew with a goalie like Lu we'd have a great chance at the cup. Almost happened last year and I'm confident it will before he's gone.

I'm pretty sure there's a clause in Luongo's contract that allows MG to trade him after x-years into the contract. So it's a "special" NTC.
I believe theres an outclause in the contract that allows Luongo to break the contract and leave in the 5th year, and the Canucks have an option to break the contract and walk away from Lu in the 7th year. I dont recall whether it was to leave the contract completely, or whether it was just regarding the no-trade clause. But I remember it being a super unique contract when I heard about it, leave it to MG to get creative. So the 12 yr contract is really just a 7 yr contract :)

The Luongo Contract is a 5.3m cap hit. say the CBA is extended, or modified in which the cap ceiling is lowered, you can expect the cap number to go down with it.
Please dont say TL;DR, some people here should read this in regards to Luongo. My take on Lu is neutral. I do like to crack a few jokes towards him. like the mr.october joke
VANCOUVER — There was a lot of mutual admiration expressed after goaltender Roberto Luongo signed a monster 12-year extension with the Vancouver Canucks this week.
Canucks general manager Mike Gillis, who refused earlier this summer to give a similar deal to the Sedin twins, said Luongo was different. He was the right person, and the right player at the right position.
Luongo, for his part, heaped praise on Gillis and the Canucks. He said he believed in the general manager’s plan and ownership as he made what looked to be a full commitment to the city, where he is seemingly prepared to play out the rest of his career.
It was all true. But only to a point. Every relationship has its limits and neither side in this marriage was prepared to fully lock in.
The devil is so often in the details and there are some interesting ones in the Luongo contract which is set to pay him $64 million US over the 12 years. It’s no secret that most people don’t believe Luongo will play all 12 years, which would take him to age 43. Chances are he will retire before then, and most see him playing just eight or nine years in Vancouver. But it could be far less. This deal includes several “escape clauses,” mitigating risk by giving both parties an out if they’re unhappy.
The first comes five years into the extension. If Luongo isn’t pleased with where the team is at, or where it’s heading, he can then trigger a trade. The out clause is timed for what should be an organizational crossroads — one year after the Sedins’ current long-term deal is up. The Canucks have agreed to accommodate the request by moving Luongo at that point.
It’s likely Luongo would be a valuable commodity, coveted by NHL teams even at age 36. If it were to happen, the team which traded for him would owe him $27.2 million for the final seven years of his deal.
Two years later, after the contract extension’s seventh year, the Canucks have a reciprocal clause. If they want to go in another direction, they will have an opportunity to move Luongo despite his no-trade clause.
Luongo would be 38 years old. But, if he’s still playing at an elite level, should remain an intriguing trading chip. At that point of the deal Luongo would have five years left and he would be owed just $13.714 million.
The escape clauses will be a story down the road. For now, they may raise some concerns, especially from an insecure fan base which has, in the past, doubted Luongo’s commitment to Vancouver. But Gillis, a former agent, said there’s nothing to worry about as he doesn’t see anything unusual in the clauses.
“They are commonplace for high end players,” he said. “Especially for contracts that have term like this. It is not unique.”
There are a couple more scenarios which may play out over the course of the contract. With his limited no-trade, Luongo did not get a no-movement clause. It leaves the slim possibility that the Canucks could put him on the waiver wire or demote him to the minors in the later years of the deal. It’s admittedly preposterous but possible all the same.
If Luongo wanted to keep playing into his twilight years, and the team wanted to move on, the more likely scenario would see the Canucks buy out Luongo’s contract. Because his contract is heavily front-loaded, a buyout would provide a lot of relief after eight years: The Canucks would have paid $57-million to Luongo at that point, leaving just $7 million over the remaining four years. With a buyout amount of $4.7-million (two thirds of $7 million) spread over twice the remaining length of the 2-year deal, the Canucks would owe just $587,000 a year.

I predict Loungo will be traded for a top six winger if he continues his downward spiral. Cory seems ready to be a number one goaltender and he doesnt get emotionally tied. He has no sub par months either. Hes steady and gets the job done.
You can fail me all you want but Loungo isn't the reason the Canucks were a successful team. The D played great all season despite the injuries. We were tops in scoring in the league. Take all that away and you got a flopping goaltender who fails to perform when it matters.

I guess it came out the wrong way. Of course i'd still follow the team, but just not as much, like trying to make time for every regular season game, or get worked up after every loss. Even though im still pretty young, it seems like ive been following the team for a while, long enough to know that its the postseason that really counts
I'll always be a fan, but its still a little hard to get over last years final loss

I don't know about you guys, but this regular season matters very little to me.
Especially after last year, I think as long as this core remains, no regular season will be interesting. These guys have NOTHING to prove in the regular season. The same questions will pop up throughout the season: Is Luo getting enough/too much rest? Sedins too soft? Team too soft? What will Gillis do about the fourth line? Can we stay healthy?
None of it matters, they will all be judged based on their performance in the playoffs.

Totally agree. There is no doubt by anyone that the Canucks will make it to the playoffs, and most likely will be at, or at the very least, near the top of the standings... so really, it all comes down to what happens in the postseason.
I mean, I'll still watch the regular season games as often as I can, but it just doesn't have the same importance.

Lets not jump so far ahead. With the NHL anything can happen. Every season there are disappointments and every season there are surprises. You're gonna totally regret not watching the teams journey throughout the season if by somehow our team doesn't live up to its potential and maybe be shy of making the playoffs *knock on wood*.
Half the fun of the playoffs is going through the ups and downs of the team before making it to the stage that really matters. No one's gonna lay down and just hand us a playoff spot.

re: Canucks being soft.
I thought Juice brought up a great point when Hank got drilled a couple games ago. You want to make the other guy pay the price for his actions. But you also don't want to cost your team the 2 minutes instigating, game misconduct if you are a key part of the team's chances to win. You understand the importance of sticking up for your teammate, but you AND your teammate that just got drilled both understand the importance playing the team game and how important each win is. THIS is a true team game and discipline. Optically to us as fans, the team appears soft now. Internally in the locker room, they are stronger and players have a higher level of trust in each other knowing that they will let nothing get in the way of a win, not even one of their teammates getting cheap shotted. This is why loose cannons like SOB did not find favour with management.

i think as the season goes on and shanahan suspends more players, the guys will start to get their acts together. i know it's early, but if shanahan stays consistent, this league will start to see a lot less cheap shots.

Yup it's just like when they introduced the new obstruction penalty system. It took a few years or less but they eventually got used to it.
You guys should go watch some hockey games from the early 2000s or 90s. It's crazy how much obstruction was done. A guy skating freely and getting hooked at the ribs for no reason and that is acceptable.

It's not just fighting. Players aren't allowed to celebrate too much after a goal either. If they do, they'll get ripped on endlessly by the conservative media and fans. Especially if they are european.
Exactly. Much like in golf, its considered disrespectful to showboat. As much as hockey is a physical sport, it's also, in its own way, a gentleman's sport. For example, if you're up by 4 goals and score a 5th, you can't really celebrate. It's classless.
The gentlemen are the players you remember. Think Beliveau, Sakic, Yzerman, Lemieux.. the list goes on and on...
In regard to UFO's post about the Canucks being soft - I personally feel that the Sedins try to get under the opponents skin as best they can in order to draw penalties. They're smart enough to understand that even the refs will protect the best in the game and they're more likely to draw a quick whistle than a Burrows type player. Sedins are also mature enough to tell the team, "Look, we're probably going to get punched in the face for what we're saying and doing out there. Let them draw a penalty, don't react."
That's my take on it anyway.
the perception around the league is starting to become that the bucks can be pushed around
Is it really though? Or is that the perception the media is selling/pushing on you? When was the last time you saw a team like Detroit really mix it up and push back on a regular basis?
Once our PP comes around, teams trying to take advantage of the 'softness' will put themselves at risk of getting scored on. The Canucks already take a fairly high number of penalties, do they really need to risk taking more by mixing it up, and also losing their focus of what it takes to win each game one at a time?
Kind of unrelated, but the thing that really bugs me is that now in the name of 'team toughness' good clean solid check are being punished by 1 or 2 guys on the opposition jumping you for delivering a solid hit. If it's a dirty hit, by all means that sort of response is justified but the instigator rule prevents proper payback currently.

FINALLY Higgins is moved onto the second and Sturm to the third.
Lineup:
Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
Higgins-Coho-Samuelsson
Sturm-Malhotra-Hansen
Volpatti-Lapierre-Weisse
Hamuis-Bieksa
Ballard-Edler
Alberts-Salo
Luongo
Schneider

Where'd you get that lineup? IIRC Higgins was always on the second line with CoHo :suspicious:
Posted via RS Mobile (http://www.revscene.net/forums/announcement.php?a=228)
^ define "always." Higgins started the season on the third line, but AV has been juggling lines recently. I don't think Higgins has ever started a game on the 2nd line.
Regardless, I'm happy that that plug Sturm is getting demoted.

I'm pretty sure Higgins started games on the 2nd line with Kesler last year. But if you meant this year:

Regardless, I'm happy that that plug Sturm is getting demoted.
Everyone seem to forget what Mike Gillis was thinking of when he brought Marco Sturm in. Ask yourselves the following question: What was Mike Gillis bringing Marco Sturm for? Who did Mike Gillis have in mind when he signed Marco Sturm?
The answer is Ryan Kesler. Mike Gillis had in mind the style of game Ryan Kesler plays and what asset would gel and maximize the production from Ryan Kesler's 2nd line - not Cody Hodgson's 2nd line.
Right now, our replacement 2nd line center is Cody Hodgson. Yes, he has been the best offensive threat not named Sedin or Burrows. But Hodgson's style contrasts drastically with that of our actual 2nd line center Ryan Kesler. First off, Cody relies more heavily on puck possession, positioning and cycling to produce offense. He's similar to the Sedins, and like the Sedins when they first broke in, Cody can only produce by cycling and puck possession in the offensive zone - he is not deft enough on creating chances on the rush yet (Hodgson will learn to do this with time and experience just as the Sedins did).
Marco Sturm relies heavily on the rushing game - he's a run-and-gun player. Sturm does not cycle. What he's good at is rushing into the other team's zone, crash the net and create 2nd and 3rd chances off the rush by creating havoc. Now, compare that with Ryan Kesler's game. Kesler, being the Selke winner that he is, often creates his chances by first stripping the opposition of the puck, using his speed to create an odd-man rush situation (run-and-gun), carrying the puck into the offensive zone, and shooting it.
Last season, while Kesler is doing this, Raymond and Samuelsson would drive wide and stay on the perimeters. But what is Sturm's game? He's hardwired to go straight to the net and create havoc, screen the goalie, and get those 2nd and 3rd chances from rebounds that Kesler often created last season but no one was able to clean up.
Sturm looks horrible right now because unfortunately for him, our replacement 2nd line center plays a completely different style of offense from what our GM Mike Gillis was anticipating Sturm would be playing with - which is the run-and-gun game that Kesler brings.
Don't give up on Sturm until you see him with Kesler - because that is the one reason Gillis brought him here for. You can't give up on a product without even using it properly. It's like trying to brush your hair with a toothbrush and concluding that your toothbrush is a useless tool. It's not - you've just been using it wrong, and haven't put it to proper use yet. Now, after you brush your teeth with it, you can determine whether it is a terrible toothbrush or not. It may well turn out to be a terrible one, but you can't know until you've used it in its proper role.
cliffs
- Sturm is in a new conference, new game play, new line mates
- brought in to play run and gun style with kesler, not with Coho's puck possession style
- don't judge his play until he has played the way he was brought in to play as

Because as the head of discipline he doesn't talk to refs right?
And 2 separate refs calling penalties on hip checks, and other players making "clean" hip checks being penalized?

The ones he got called on we're called as clipping due to being low, not "tripping"
People on other forums I'm on who work for companies directly related to the NHL say players and executives are seriously thinking the NHL could take a serious down turn due to shanahan.
