HockeysFuture.com Canucks Top 20 Prospects
Hodgson still tops in Vancouver prospect pool - Hockey's Future (http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/13243/hodgson_still_tops_in_vancouver_prospect_pool/)
Success in the NHL has its price, mainly salary cap restriction and lower position in the draft. As a result the Canucks do not have a particularly rich talent pipeline. Cancuks Mike Gillis deserves credit however, he and his staff have begun to parlay limited picks into some success. Where the Canucks already had some nice prospects in net and on defense, with this year's draft Gillis also added some size and skill at forward, while reinforcing some of the previously stronger areas.
1. (1) Cody Hodgson, C, 7.5B
Drafted 1st round, 10th overall, 2008
A former top-10 pick whose rise has been slowed by a misdiagnosed back injury in 2009, Hodgson registered average numbers for Vancouver's AHL affiliate in Manitoba, posting 17 goals and 13 assists in 52 games. He acquitted himself in a checking line role over 20 games (eight regular season, 12 playoff) with the Canucks and though he put up minimal points, was a solid presence on the forecheck and in his own end.
Hodgson has the hockey sense to be a legitimate third-line forward, with hands that suggest he could do more. He may be ready to start in the NHL the coming season but could have a tough time cracking a veteran lineup.
2. (NR) Nicklas Jensen, RW, 7.5C
Drafted, 1st round, 29th overall, 2011
Nicklas Jensen has an ideal combination of size, speed, and skill. While cultural assimilation to North America is typically not as difficult for Scandinavians, it should be even less so for Jensen, an OHL player who is fluent in English. Jensen's father, Dan, also played in the OHL before returning to Denmark for his pro career. Negatives on Jensen at this point are his conditioning, which needs to improve and his attention to defense. In 61 games at Oshawa last season, Jensen tallied 29 goals and 29 assists and was plus-14. In 10 playoff games for the Generals, he scored seven goals and had four assists and was plus-two.
3. (7) Chris Tanev, D, 6.5B
Acquired as free agent, May 31st, 2010
Like Hodgson, Tanev gained some valuable NHL experience in 2010-11, with 29 regular season and five playoff games, and did not look out of place. In Manitoba, he registered one goal and eight assists in 39 regular season games, and was plus-16. In 14 playoff games, he notched a goal and two helpers.
Tanev is not spectacular in any regard, but he is always smart with the puck and makes great decisions in all situations. He projects as a third pairing defenseman in the NHL and his solid game and hockey smarts indicate he is a sure bet to reach that potential.
4. (8) Eddie Lack, G, 7.0C
Signed as a free agent, April 6th, 2010
No Canuck prospect has seen his stock rise faster since 2009 than the rangy Swedish goaltender. In that brief span of time, Lack has advanced from the Swedish minors, to the SEL, then to an effective starter in the AHL.
A shrewd free agent signing by GM Mike GiIlis and further proof of how well the Canucks scout Sweden, Lack's numbers as the starter in Manitoba last season were outstanding. In 53 games, he managed a 28-21-4 record, .926 save percentage, 2.26 goals against average, and five shutouts.
With Roberto Luongo and Corey Schneider ahead of him in the organization however, perhaps the greater question surrounding Lack is not if he will make the NHL, but where.
5. (3) Jordan Schroeder, C/W, 7.0C
Drafted 1st round, 22nd overall, 2009
After picking up a hat trick in the AHL in the spring of 2010, this diminutive former first rounder put up adequate numbers in his first full pro season at Manitoba in 2010-11. In 61 games, he picked up 10 goals and 18 assists and was minus-seven. In 14 playoff contests, he had a goal and five helpers.
Prior to sustaining a midseason ankle injury, Schroeder played primarily with some combination of veteran Marco Rosa and fellow rookies Aaron Volpatti and Cody Hodgson.
6. (2) Anton Rodin, RW/LW, 7.0C
Drafted 2nd round, 53rd overall, 2009
After graduating early in 2009-10 to Brynas in the Elietseren (Swedish Elite League), the speedy Rodin settled in with decent numbers this past season, seven goals, 19 assists, and minus-nine in 53 games.
Rodin did not make the national squad representing Sweden in the Karjala Tournament in late 2010, however his ice time increased at Brynas, where he often played with former Senator Andreas Dackell, a reflection of the coaching staff's growing confidence in him.
7. (10) Yann Sauve, D, 7.0C
Drafted 2nd round, 41st overall, 2008
Sauve projects as a rugged, two-way defender in the NHL. He had solid numbers in an injury-shortened 2010-11 campaign, managing three goals and 11 assists in 39 regular season games. He also appeared in five games with the Canucks. In addition to his solid defensive play, Sauve will drop the gloves in defense of teammates and handles himself well in a scrap.
8. (5) Kevin Connauton, D, 7.0C
Drafted 3rd round, 83rd overall, 2009
Connauton had a nice rookie season at Manitoba with 11 goals and 12 assists in 73 regular season games and a goal in the playoffs. His numbers are consistent with his billing, a hard-shooting, power play specialist. The former Western Michigan Bronco continues to demonstrate NHL quality skills in terms of skating, puck-handling and decision-making. However, at minus-11 this past season, he must get better in his own end and gain physical strength in order to reach the NHL.
9. (6) Patrick McNally, D, 7.0D
Drafted, 4th round, 115th overall, 2010
McNally captained his Milton Academy (Massachusetts) team to their first ever league title. He had 35 points in 28 games and was voted Prep Defenseman of the Year by U.S. Hockey Report.
He will attend Harvard this fall. It is unknown what type of upside he has at this point, but he was an offensively oriented player and a mobile skater in prep school.
10. (4) Billy Sweatt, LW, 6.5C
Signed as a free agent, August 19th, 2010
Sweatt had a nice year at Manitoba, with 19 goals and 27 assists in 80 games. His game is consistent with that of many Canucks and Canuck prospects in the sense he is an excellent skater.
But while his AHL numbers are good, they are nothing special. Furthermore, as a former high second round pick, the forward is now with his third organization in three years.
So the question with a player like Sweatt is the same that dogs so many who produce significant offensive numbers in college and junior- if he lacks the ability to produce those numbers in the NHL, can he adjust his game to a potential bottom-six role?
11. (NR) David Honzik, G, 7.0D
Drafted 3rd round, 71st overall, 2011
This big Czech goaltender, like Jensen, might have been a nice value pick where he fell to the Canucks. Some draft speculators had him going in the second round. Honzik has the size, athleticism and technique that would indicate an NHL future. A pure butterfly goaltender, Honzik is fairly well-polished and shows good rebound control.
His stats in 36 games at Victoriaville (3.54 goals against average, .884 save percentage) will not inspire greatness. However, one must remember this was Honzik's first year in North America, and also a great year for offense in the QMJHL. His 17-12-1 record better demonstrates his general effectiveness.
12. (NR) Alexandre Grenier, RW, 7.0D
Drafted 3rd round, 90th overall, 2011
An offensively gifted player with lots of size, Grenier can skate and shoot the puck, but despite his stature, is not a power player. He needs to grow into his frame and then learn how to effectively harness added strength within his game.
His regular season numbers with the Quebec Remparts (nine goals and 15 assists in 31 contests) were unexceptional. However, in 15 playoff games, he came through with eight goals and eight assists. Grenier was dealt in June from Quebec to Halifax.
13. (NR) Sebastian Erixon, D, 7D
Acquired as a Free agent, April 20th, 2011
Passed over in his draft year, the 21 year-old Erixon was signed by Mike Gillis in April after his third season in the Swedish Elite League. Small in stature, Erixon makes up for it with very high hockey sense and the prototypical Swedish defenseman's two-way game. In a league where defensemen are hard-pressed to put up big numbers, Erixon has gradually ramped up his production in the SEL. In 2010-11 season with Timra IK, Erixon notched five goals and 15 assists and was minus-six.
14. (11) Adam Polasek, D, 6.5D
Drafted 5th round, 145th overall, 2010
Yet another intriguing blueliner grabbed in the middle rounds by Gillis, Polasek demonstrated his offensive skill with a very strong season at P.E.I. in the QMJHL, registering seven goals and 32 assists in 61 games. He was even in plus/minus. Making these numbers even more impressive is the fact that the Q has been loaded with outstanding pro prospects the last couple of years.
Polasek has been a standout in both Canuck rookie and pro training camps, and thus on April 6th, 2011, the Canucks signed him to a three year entry-level pro contract.
15. (12) Steven Anthony, LW, 6.5D
Drafted 7th round, 187th overall, 2009
Point-per-game players are not terribly unusual in the high-scoring QMJHL these days. However, Anthony's combination of size and production would indicate that he is a prospect worth watching. In 61 games at St. John in 2010-11, he notched 23 goals and 37 assists. Most notably he was plus-35. In 14 playoff games he had five goals and seven assists.
16. (13) Alex Friesen, C, 6.5D
Drafted 6th round, 172th overall, 2010
What Friesen lacks in size, he makes up for in production, evidenced by 66 points (26 goals, 40 assists) in 60 contests with Niagara in the OHL. He also notched two goals and eight assists in 14 playoff contests.
Considered a leader on and off the ice, Friesen shares the same qualities as many current Canucks forwards, he has good sense in the offensive zone, plays a hard-skating style of game, and is more than capable of stirring the pot.
17. (14) Jeremy Price, D, 6.5D
Drafted 4th round, 113th overall, 2009
In his sophomore season at Colgate (ECAC), Price led all Raider defensemen with five goals and 14 assists in 42 games. He was also one of only five players to appear in all 42 contests. Price registered a season high three assists in a road loss at Princeton, on each of Colgate's first three goals.
He has returned to Colgate for his junior season in 2011-12.
18. (NR) Joseph Labate, C, 6.5D
Drafted 4th round, 111th overall, 2011
Labate could be yet another value selection for the Canucks, projected by at least one prognosticator as a high third round pick. Labate can shoot the puck, but the Minnesota schoolboy has "project" written all over him. He needs to work on his skating and must add weight to his large frame.
The Academy of Holy Angels graduate is committed to play NCAA hockey at Wisconsin this fall.
19. (9) Joe Cannata, G, 6.5D
Drafted 6th round, 173rd overall, 2009
Cannata is perhaps testament to the fact that goaltending is the real strength of the Canucks' talent pipeline. He put together a very solid season at Merrimack in the highly competitive NCAA Hockey East conference (25-10-4, 2.48 goals against average, .911 save percentage), and is considered by many to be a legitimate NHL prospect.
Aside from having adequate size, Cannata is commended by coaches and fellow players for his calm, consistent demeanor between the pipes- a critical component of pro success.
20. (15) Prab Rai, C, 6.5D
Drafted 5th round, 131st overall, 2008
At the tail end of a strong overage junior season in Seattle (WHL) in 2009-10, the Canucks signed Rai to a 3-year pro contract. He then suffered a serious back injury and missed all of the 2010-11 season.
Rai was born in Surrey, BC and is often spotted driving around Vancouver. He is also a subject of a great deal of debate among Vancouver fans, is he a legitimate prospect or a high-scoring junior player who lacks the foot speed to succeed in the pros? A healthy 2011-12 should provide some answers.

The Canucks haven't been in the bottom of the NHL for a long time so naturally our talent pool on the farm isn't very deep. Past 10th, that's looking pretty slim and we lack a serious AAA prospect with superstar potential. Hodgson might be as close as it gets there.
We're lucky the Sedins and Kesler panned out because Gillis can just build around those guys for another 5 years and just roll the dice on prospects.

On the topic of Junior stars not doing well in the NHL, anyone remember the Brule vs Crosby debate?
Brule was the best in the west, Crosby the beast of the east and the Allstar game was played here. Crosby didn't show, Brule got a hat trick and I remember being at the game where everyone (admittedly, myself included) was saying Brule was the man and potentially the NHLs next Superstar.
How things change... lol

Yeah I had high expectations for Brule aswell when he played for the Giants. He's packed on a ton of fat a la Wellwood affecting his game drastically.
Such a shame with a guy of his talent not living up to his potential.
Goes to show you no matter who you draft, they don't pan out the way you want
I'm really hoping Hodgson can prove otherwise

It's okay I think. I have to wait to see it with the rest of his gear.
Better than just solid white pads though. Is that still the P3 with just customized "graphics"?
I don't think Reebok has made a new series line for goalie pads.

I see people talking about goalie pads all the time and I don't get it. It's not like they're covered in art like masks. They're just a generic design and they're the same for everyone that buys those other than color.
As long as they stop pucks, I don't even notice when those guys change their pads.

What do you mean? All pads from different models are different.
It would be like people saying all hockey sticks are the same as long as they
can put pucks in the net. I don't even notice when a player switches different
sticks with different blade curves.
Besides talking about the designs and colour schemes, more importantly,
performance and quality from one model of pads to another can stir up a big
discussion among goalies. It's pretty important stuff. But I wouldn't expect
anyone to be talking about that stuff here. Cause that would be in the gear review thread.
And Reebok currently has 3 different models that pros would use, but the
designs on the new pads that Luongo is using doesn't fit any of those...
so I'm suspecting that's a custom designed Reebok pad...
or it's just a completely different pad, and "Reebok" paid Luongo to just put that logo on the pads.
Good to see some color back to his pads but that design is ugly. They're premiere 4's btw, according to Goalie Store Forums

That's Reebok's newest update, Premier Series IV. Revoke is built the same as the Premier Series line of pad, but with the different graphic. So Reebok has the Premier Series (ex. Luongo), Revoke (ex. Fleury), and Larceny (ex. Miller).

What's there not to talk about for pads? They are not covered in art like masks so they are not worth discussing? Only topics pertaining to art are worthy of discussion? How about different performance for different pads?
If anything, masks are more of a generic design than pads, since across all manufacturers their purpose and goal is to deflect pucks and disperse the impact and pressure. As long as they keep the goalie's brains intact, the art is only secondary.. Pads on the other hand are tuned and modified to reflect each player's style. There are lots to talk about.
Different pads definitely function and perform differently from each other. You have modern flat-faced butterfly style pads (Luongo, Lundqvist) that kick rebounds out, or more traditional hybrid pads with knee rolls or shin rolls (Brodeur, Miller) that help dampen pucks and produce less lively rebounds.
I heard Kiprusoff and most Calgary Flames goalies use Always pads, because they have wings. Apparently they have this "sea of red" there in Calgary, sounds like a heavy flow.

BTW: anyone remember Mike Danton? The St. Louis Blues player that hired a hitman to kill his agent or something?
The long, strange journey of former NHLer Mike Danton took him to IFK Ore of Sweden's Division 1 this summer, seven years after he was arrested in a murder-for-hire plot that derailed his pro career and led to five years in prison.
In IFK's season opener Sunday night against Soderhamn/Ljusne, the controversial player turned into hero, saving the life of a teammate on the ice.
During the third period, Danton's teammate, Marcus Bengtsson, took a late check and fell to the ice landing face first. It was soon after that Bengtsson began to go into convulsions.
Bengtsson started having a seizure and that's when Danton sprung into action to help save his teammates life. After a few minutes, Bengtsson's jaw locked and it became clear he was close to choking on his own tongue. On his blog today, Danton wrote about the incident:
"As his eyes continued to roll into the back of his head, his mouth finally opened a bit. It was at that time that I jammed my fingers into his mouth and clawed his tongue. While I did that, Max and Roger tilted Bangan [Bengtsson] on to his side to keep his tongue and blood from sliding into his throat."
Danton noted in his blog that during his five years in prison, he became certified in first aid.
The game was halted, but the decision to continue was put on the shoulders of Danton. He decided to ask Bengtsson, who gave them the green light. IFK would end up winning 4-3; and after the game, members of the team visited Bengtsson in hospital where he had no recollection of the frightening events

WOW thats a crazy story. Kinda messed how things work out sometimes. Just think because he was in prison he learned first aid which more then likley saved Bengtssons life.

Well, there wouldn't be a discussion like that in this thread,
because people don't talk about gear performance (in general)
since this isn't a gear review thread.
And from my initial post,
I was simply commenting that I'm not a fan of that "Premiere IV" Reebok design.
But even if it's just colours, I think it's valid to comment on the colour scheme being used.

It seems like most players already do wear visors now... except for the enforcers, or
some of the veterans that still refuse to get one.
Within the next 5 years, most of those veterans will be retired.
So I guess that just leaves the enforcers...
Maybe it's an appearance thing, and they don't feel like they are intimidating if they get a visor... ?

Maybe it's an appearance thing, and they don't feel like they are intimidating if they get a visor... ?
If you're acting a tough guy on the ice with a visor on, you'll get razzed / mocked pretty good by dudes who don't wear visors and have no problem dropping the gloves. Its an unwritten rule. If you want to be a tough guy or even someone who beaks off a lot, don't dare wear a visor.

Yeah, I figure that's the issue with that...
If all the next gen players in the minor leagues are forced to wear cages or visors now, and they then enter NHL,
do you think even the next gen enforcers will start to accept wearing a visor as a common thing?

They'll pretty much be forced to take off their helmets to fight - increasing chance of concussion, which could take fighting out of the game... Could be part of the reason visors aren't mandatory yet. Domino effect.

I think there was an article featuring Tanner Glass who talked about this. Something along the lines of him always wearing while young, then when he hit the AHL he had to take it off in order to be one of the tough guys

Not even. Manny was neither a tough guy/enforcer, or yapper so.......
It all just goes back to comfort > safety. Just like disregarding safety, it's better to play with no helmet > helmet > helmet + half visor > helmet + full shield. Hell, I bet if full equipment wasn't a league mandate, you'd get a handful of NHLers that would play w/o shoulder pads.
To say that it's an inner culture unwritten rule thing that one abides by is nothing but a pure justificational reach.

On a serious note that was a touching story.
on the other hand
ALL IS FORGIVEN
Team 1040 had a guy on the radio this morning by the name of Steve Simmons. He wrote a book that is out today that talks about Mike and the things that happened over the years.
http://www.penguin.ca/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,9780670065295,00.html
Supposed Mike never responded to this guy's request about the book, but he wrote one anyways and there is a lot of detail about Mike's family including the relationship between him and his 7 years younger brother. The book talks about what happened when the brother was 13 and spend 2 weeks at Frost's cabin where he was verbally/physically/sexually abused by Frost and others while his brother stood and watched.
Don't know how credible this guy is, but he made it sound like Mike lied to many people including the parole board and may still have issues stemming from that Frost guy.

HODGSON IMPRESSES
Head coach Alain Vigneault said he's been impressed by Cody Hodgson so far in camp and he wants to give the team's first-round pick [10th overall] three years ago every opportunity at centre.
"Right now I really want to give him a chance in the middle, because that's his natural position," said Vigneault. "What I've seen the first three days, I've really liked. You're seeing more jump and obviously those offensive smarts are there. We'll try him there and as things unfold his play and the play of others will put the pieces together."
The opportunity for Hodgson to finally play in the top six has come up with the news that Ryan Kesler almost certainly won't start the season after hip labrum surgery. But Vigneault said it shouldn't be assumed that Hodgson would have to switch to wing when Kesler returns.
"There's nothing that stops us from putting Manny [third line centre Malhotra] on the wing and [still use him] for faceoffs," said Vigneault. "Manny has played a lot of left wing, so there is a whole bunch of possibilities. The players will decide. If a player is playing so well in one position that we can't take him out, we'll have to make some decisions."
Looking forward to seeing what CoHo does.

Hockey bits: Oreskovich will not be wearing the usual number 38 on his jersey in honor of Demitra
Oreskovich will give up No. 38:
In a tribute to fallen former Canucks winger Pavol Demitra, one of 43 passengers who died Sept. 7 when a plane carrying Yaroslavl Lokotomiv of the Kontinental Hockey League crashed in Russia, his number 38 Canucks jersey may not be worn this NHL season,
"I'd have no trouble giving up the number," said Oreskovich. "I never selected it and if they approach me, I understand how tragic a scenario that was and how well liked Pavol was in this city. I never met him. I played against him once when I was in Florida and that whole situation is sad."

PlayNow.com partners with Roberto Luongo
Vancouver Canuck goaltender will join online poker players on PlayNow.com
Vancouver B.C., September 19, 2011 – Poker players on PlayNow.com will now have the opportunity to play against one of the NHL's top players, Roberto Luongo.
PlayNow.com, BC's online poker room, has announced a partnership with the Vancouver Canucks' goaltender.
Luongo becomes a representative for PlayNow.com poker and will appear in new advertisements and a number of player promotions.
"This is an exciting opportunity for me, and I hope for poker players on PlayNow.com," explained Luongo. "I've always enjoyed playing poker and my competitive side is looking forward to practicing my poker skills."
Luongo is renowned amongst poker players and hockey fans for his passion for poker. He has played in a number of tournaments, including the Canucks for Kids Fund Dice and Ice charity tournament and the NHLPA's Goals & Dreams fund.
"This is an exciting announcement for our players; they will now have the opportunity to play poker against Roberto Luongo," announced Rhonda Garvey, Vice President of eGaming, BCLC. "This partnership gives our players access to great prizes like the chance to test their poker skills against the hockey all-star."
Players registered on PlayNow.com will soon see the familiar name in the poker room.
"Players can look forward to many unique promotional opportunities through this partnership during the upcoming hockey season," added Garvey.
In addition to advertising appearances, Luongo will play poker on PlayNow.com, play in his own charity tournament and appear in promotional events where registered PlayNow.com players can compete to participate. More information will be available at PlayNow.com.
"The friendly competition of a poker game is one of my favourite hobbies. It's always been fun to play online and I look forward to testing my poker skills on PlayNow.com," added Luongo.
Operated by BCLC, PlayNow.com is BC's only legal and regulated online gambling website. PlayNow.com offers socially responsible gambling entertainment while generating income to benefit all British Columbians.
Registered PlayNow.com players will soon see Luongo play under the name Luongo1 in the poker room.

Last night's game for $25 centre ice was a steal. Only a little more than half of the arena filled up. Scalpers had stacks of tickets half an hour before game start, do they just eat the cost if tickets not sold?
I wonder how many of those scalpers have seasons tickets. I thought it felt like there were more than half the seats filled. I would've said closer to 2/3's.

Heard from Global news that Modano actually told a couple people that the Canucks wanted him to consider playing for them for at least this coming year. Squire said not sure if it was a actual contract offer or just PTO, but Modano knew after last year he didn't have it in him. Just food for thought.
We could have had Modano on our team, but Minnesota wanted him more, all worked out though since we got Trevor! :D

Modano playing for the Canucks would be cool
Kesler idolized the guy growing up
regardless, It would only be fitting if he retired a Star.. the franchise that he grew with. They should give him that one game to crack 1500games played. That be neat.

Last night's game for $25 centre ice was a steal. Only a little more than half of the arena filled up. Scalpers had stacks of tickets half an hour before game start, do they just eat the cost if tickets not sold?
How did you get it for $25? lol

an odd read....but here it is anyways... I still continue to say that the BleacherReport is horrible..then again, some of their contributors are just thriving to get into journalism... The site is sometimes a decent read..and the way their site flows is great
Roberto Luongo: A Look at 2011-12 and His Connection to LeBron James | Bleacher Report (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/821772-roberto-luongo-a-look-at-2011-12-and-his-connection-to-lebron-james)
Three months ago we all became "witnesses" to the fact that Roberto Luongo and LeBron James are similar.
Like James, Luongo is a phenomenal talent. Both are athletically gifted and have had Olympic Gold draped around their necks. Like LBJ, Bobby Lu once toiled with a bottom-dwelling franchise for several years before ending up in a much bigger pond.
LeBron used free agency as a ticket to Miami, and Roberto was stolen by Vancouver from Florida. James' new home was a place he planned to win "not one...not two...not three...not four...not five...not six...not seven..." rings. Luongo joined a team that would grow into Canada's best hope for a Cup.
But like “the King” has a couple of times, "No. 1" stumbled on the championship stage.
“Luuuuu," as he's affectionately called whenever a puck comes near his general area, was Dr. Jekyll in Vancouver and Mr. Hyde in Boston. At the TD Garden, he stopped just 51 of the 66 shots he faced and was yanked twice in three games.
The fact is, when a title is on the line, great players are not only supposed to hold serve at home but also find a way to deliver on the road, even if they don't have their best stuff. If Luongo just turns in mediocre report cards in Beantown, there are no comparisons to James, there are no questions of his mental toughness and there are possibly no Vancouver riots...possibly.
So with regards to free agency, what will Luongo's butterfly-flop do to his value? It doesn't really matter given that his current 12-year, $64 million contract doesn't end until 2019-2020 (gulp). What it could do is shorten the leash a bit and possibly give Cory Schneider a few more starts moving forward.
In a recent piece written by Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun, Lu maintains he has put last year behind him. And with the 2011-12 season just around the bend, the Canucks are preparing with largely the same unit that brought them to within one win of the Stanley Cup. Given the minimal changes, on paper the 'Nucks have a great chance of repeating their regular season success—and I think they will. They've accomplished all that a team can from October through May. What Vancouver fans (not the "fake rioting ones") really care about is that the team find success next June. Re-enter Roberto.
Talking about moving forward is one thing, but as we've seen with LeBron, fans only care to hear so much. It's what they see that matters. And no, this does not include one-hour televised specials with Jim Gray.
So will Luongo's actions speak louder than his words? The "decision" is his...

I didn't buy from the scalpers, bought it off CL instead. FV for those tickets are $95, the season ticket holder (seller) even delivered the tickets to me in downtown from North Van... a few hours before the game. Great guy.
I also bought this Saturday's Ducks game for $40, same sections.
At this rate, I can be a "pre-season ticket holder"! :megusta:

I would put my money that all of them are season ticket holders. The way they price tickets at Ticketmaster there barely is any profit to be made if you sell them on CL.

You can't verify. No one will sell tickets to you that way. Usually people sell it because they can't make it to the arena. Or what if you (buyer) flake out last minute at the gate?
I only buy from season ticket holder, check Canucks ID, match with drivers license, and trust them. At the end, you are saving at least 40-80% depending how much homework you do on CL.

Pretty great read about the mindset and stuff an NHL enforcer goes through, written by former NHLer Brent Severyn
An All-Star defenseman in the AHL, Brent Severyn later found that the only way to stay in the NHL was by using his fists.
The deaths of three NHL enforcers -- Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak -- since May shed light on the issues and dangers that enforcers face on and off the ice. Brent Severyn, Belak's teammate on the 1996-97 Colorado Avalanche, had a 328-game NHL career with six teams that began with the Quebec Nordiques in 1989 and ended in 1999 with the Stanley Cup champion Dallas Stars. Now the owner of the Dallas-area business Severyn Sports, Severyn took time to tell SI.com's Adrian Dater what it's really like to fight for a living in the NHL.
The day I became a "goon" is pretty clear. In September 1996 -- seven years into my NHL career, the same season that Wade Belak was turning pro and joining the Avalanche -- I got a call from Colorado. "We need a fourth-line forward to protect our guys, are you interested?" After a 15- or 20-minute conversation, I decided I would give it a shot.
It was my dream to be playing in the NHL and I was willing to do anything to stay there. Being an enforcer was the toughest job I had to do. Protecting your teammates by fighting is a physical and mental battle waged daily with opponents and within your own head. The actual fight on the ice is not the worst part. It's thinking about the fight. A mental vise grips you at training camp and doesn't let go until the end of the season. Fighting permeates every aspect of your thoughts. A slow boil of fear is always under the surface of your life.
Fighting was not enjoyable, but it had always earned me respect and room on the ice. When I joined Colorado, I had been working to establish myself as a stay-at-home defenseman in the NHL. I was known as a guy who could handle himself, but I generally left the heavy lifting to my team's enforcer. I didn't know much about the forward position. Frankly, I did not have the stick-handling ability for it. I was excited to play on a team that had just won the Stanley Cup and had an outstanding chance to repeat, but I did not realize that my life as a hockey player and how I would be viewed for the rest of my career would be altered forever.
The challenge
Skilled players use the preseason to get their timing back, work the power play and get into game shape. Tough guys have to be on at all times, ready to handle every new young player who wants to take their jobs and livelihoods. Training camp may be the only time these kids can impress the people who make personnel decisions. In camp with Colorado, there were several tough guys ready to take my role. I was fortunate to have [veteran winger] Mike Keane as my mentor to guide me on positioning and puck management in my new position. What Mike could not prepare me for was the demands of being the enforcer. I was being asked to replace Chris Simon, a monster of a man, an intimidating presence on the ice. This weighed on me heavily during that camp.
I had to fight a couple of times and I sensed players on other teams would use me to make an impression on their coaches. I felt their eyes burning the back of my head during the warm-up skate before games. That was the time to get a read on a player. You learn quickly to pay attention to little things that might give you an edge in a fight: body language, skating ability and sweater-size were indicators of a pugilist who would test me. I always looked to see what hand he used to take off his helmet during the national anthems. If he held it with his left, he would most likely hold my shirt with that hand and punch with his right. If he held his helmet with the other hand, he was a dreaded lefty and would have to be dealt with another way. If you are not prepared for something like that, your fight will be short and humiliating.
An enforcer must also have a feel for how a game is unfolding and continually take stock of his team's emotional state. Are the guys skating well? Do they seem up? If they need a wake-up call, you fight. If the other team has the emotional edge, you fight. The score also determines when you apply your trade. The minute the other team gets a two-goal lead, it's time to dust off your knuckles as your coach may put you in to stop your opponents' surge. Up three or more goals, you get more ice time as you have to be out there to keep the peace.
Games from Hell
Knowing you have to fight someone as tough as Georges Laraque is enough to keep you awake at night. Being an enforcer was exhausting emotionally. I was always mentally taking note of my upcoming dance card -- the guy I had to fight next. I lay awake at night and tried to remember what he did in our last fight, his strengths and weaknesses, and how to protect myself. Joe Lozito, a friend, spent hours tracking fighters and putting them on video. If you wanted your fights or needed the "book" on a new guy, Joe was the guy to ask. Now, the website, hockeyfights.com, is the library of fighter information.
A typical road trip scenario from my years as a fighter: I'm on a plane to Toronto. Their enforcer is Tie Domi. He throws both hands and loves to chirp. Man, he's so strong. If I release my grip too early, I'm done. I've got to throw for his chin as he has a very hard head. After Toronto, we play Ottawa and Dennis Vial: unpredictable, a big-time gamer. Then it's two games from hell. In St. Louis, Kelly Chase challenges anyone and will not tolerate anything out there. Tony Twist is big and strong with devastating punches that can cave your face in a second. After that, Detroit: Bob Probert (legendary tough guy with stamina, strength and power) and his sidekick Joey Kocur, whose right hand is the size of an anvil. Didn't he break some guy's helmet in two?
Sitting on the bench during those games, a sick feeling washed over me. My stomach churned with fear, anxiety and anticipation. I felt my teammates' expectations as they looked at me. They knew I was going to stand up for them, and I had a sense of pride in my role and responsibility.
I'd go in cold, my legs and back a little sore from sitting most of the game. There were 20,000 people in the building, but only one had my attention. I might as well have left my stick and gloves on the bench. The joke around the dressing room was that tough guys don't even see the puck. "You handle it like a manhole cover," my teammates joked. It's true. Like a magnet, you are always drawn to your counterpart on the other team.
The burst
Once the gloves are off, the pressure, tension and mental energy explode in a huge release of violence. Your instincts and strategy take over. I fought so often that I could feel my adversary's movement and tell you what hand he was throwing, I didn't have to look. When your punch connects, you feel it in your hands and through your body. I also knew if I was throwing wildly. You sense when you are off-balance or your rhythm is wrong. Being unsettled in a fight usually portends danger. The first rule of the fight club is to never look down. If you do, you are open to a devastating uppercut. Sometimes when I really got tagged I would see a bright starburst in my head, almost like lightning. I thought I was soft and it was a sign of weakness until I interviewed Ultimate Fighting champion Matt Hughes years later and he said he felt the same thing when he was hit hard.
If I lost a fight, I felt terrible that I let the team down. Embarrassed and pissed off, I'd stew in the penalty box. I'd hear it from friends at home. My mom would call to make sure I was all right. But coaches, the other players, and management aren't concerned that you just got your ass handed to you. It doesn't matter that you have a broken nose and lacerations on you cheek. You're expected to smile and like it. Your job is to keep everyone else up and it makes no difference if your hands are busted up so bad that you can't hold a soda can.
If I really beat up a guy, I was happy I got away unscathed, but I felt bad. I knew he'd have to handle the same embarrassment and dirty looks from his coaches and teammates, and hear from fans about how he'd had his clock cleaned. I felt oddly emotional if my opponent had to be carted off because he was injured. We fight as part of our living, but we do not want to interrupt or ruin anyone's career. It's a crazy fraternity.
Fighter's remorse
In 1998, I was with Anaheim when we played Dallas and tensions were rising to a boiling point. Defenseman Craig Ludwig took out his frustration by running our star, Teemu Selanne, in a 5-1 game the Stars were leading that was essentially over. I heard our coach call my line and took the ice with our other ruffians. We lined up for the face-off in Dallas's end of the ice. I looked at who Dallas had sent out and tried to get their coach's attention -- I knew he did not recognize what was about to happen and had the wrong lineup on the ice.
The puck dropped and we launched our attack. I got paired with Stars defenseman Darryl Sydor, but that didn't matter to him. He was a warrior in his own right. I threw him to the ice and tried to find their enforcer. Darryl got up and jumped on my back. I got him off and fired one of the hardest lefts I have ever thrown and it hit the side of Darryl's head. The fight was over. Darryl was helped off the ice and the game came to a merciful end with only two players left on the benches. To this day, people in Dallas approach me and want to discuss that fight.
I sat on the bus after the game and thought about what I had done. I'd lost it and hurt someone. I was literally sick to my stomach. I can still see and feel that punch connect. I did not sleep well for several nights. Still, I could not let anyone know how I felt. I followed up to make sure that no permanent damage had been done to Darryl and prepared for my next bout.
As fate would have it, I played for Dallas the next season (1998-99) and my seatmate on our plane was Darryl. In your first introduction after something like that, you smile, make light of it, say you're sorry, but it hurts you. The memory of our fight made me feel even worse when I got to know what a great guy he is. The person you try to beat on one occasion becomes your teammate and friend the next. It's a crazy job!
The vicious cycle
As enforcer's ice time decreases as his fights increase. No matter how hard you practice, your foot speed, stick-handling, reads on the ice and overall performance go in the toilet fast. You need a game pace to stay sharp. It's a vicious cycle. You lift weights to become stronger, but as you get bigger, you get slower, thus decreasing your effectiveness. An inferiority complex can set in.
The best coaches and many GMs and owners are savvy enough to let their enforcer know he is a valued member of the team. After a fight -- win or lose -- you yearn for a pat on the back. Sometimes you don't get that acknowledgment from the coach, and it's generally someone who never played in the NHL or had been a small offensively-gifted player. Those coaches consider enforcers to be meatheads and whipping boys, but they will not take that attitude with a first-liner or top scorer. I've seen superstars tell coaches on the bench to f--- off, throw sticks at them in the dressing room and belittle them in front of everyone. Enforcers are the team's biggest, baddest guys, but they can never express themselves like that. If they do, they are considerd distractions to the team.
Here's the paradox: You must work yourself into a frenzy of emotions to fight, but outwardly curb those feelings. You still have to get through your day and do all the things that normal people have to do --- laundry; go to the grocery store, etc. -- while the frenzy inside your mind builds. But you can't expose it to the rest of the world. It's only acceptable to express it on the ice.
The physical price
I first hurt my neck while fighting in juniors, and the constant tugging and punches to the head during my pro career caused issues that resonate to this day. My neck muscles still lock up and spasm.
While playing for Dallas in Oct. 1998, I fought Probert and fell backwards into the boards, striking the back of my head and jamming my chin into my chest. This injury ultimately put me out of the NHL.
I did everything trainers, doctors, and specialists suggested -- chiropractic, acupuncture and homeopathic care. One trainer said I was having difficulty healing because I was so wound up emotionally. I had a lot of things going on in my personal life and was struggling to get back into the lineup and frustrated mentally because every minute away meant someone else was filling my spot.
I worked frantically to get back onto the ice with my team and made it for a Feb.15, 1999 game against Edmonton. My reward was a date with hulking Georges Laraque at center ice. Unfortunately, my injury had taken away my biggest asset: strength. My timing was also off and I missed my jersey-grab on his big left arm. Georges proceeded to use my face as a speed bag and I never got set. I suffered a on home ice, a cut across the nose and a black eye.
If you get beaten up like that, you have to fight again to save face for yourself and your team. If you don't, you're considered soft. Embarrassment makes you angry and your fear is pushed aside. So after five minutes in the box, I went straight for Georges on the very next shift. Most people don't remember our second fight. In my own scoring system, I call it a draw. At least I was able to trade with him and score a few points in the bout.
I could sense the end of my NHL days was near after gooning it up for the Stars in 1999. All the healthy scratches and injuries had made it one of the toughest years of my career. I wasn't looking forward to another year of sitting, watching and getting punched in the face. Finding no takers in the NHL, I headed to Europe. It was a chance to get back to playing hockey as defenseman again. The German League had very little fighting and a big ice surface with little contact, so I could relax and enjoy the game. It was also a chance to restore some of my dignity. After three years of being labeled a goon, it was time to contribute to a team in other ways. Even with all that, two years in Germany was enough.
Looking back
When I retired, my mind and body wanted to get away from the physical pain and mental pressure. During the transition to my new life, my bouts of restlessness increased. I had strange dreams and nightmares about fighting. What got me through was a post-hockey plan and a good family support system. My wife Jill has been my biggest supporter. However, after you decompress, you start to miss the physical activity and competition. I even missed the pressure and being sore.
Enforcers are a small, proud fraternity called to do something that is against society's norms. Intimidation is part of hockey life and fighting has a place our sport. It keeps the game in check with fewer stick incidents and runs at guys, and it's a great release valve in a pressure-filled contest. The dirtiest, nastiest, most dangerous hockey I've played was in leagues that didn't have fighting. I even think there should be more of it and everyone should be responsible for taking care of themselves. I hate that only a few guys are asked to do nothing but fight.
I look at my career as a great success. It was tough and I hurt almost every day, but I'm proud that I had the guts and drive to battle. If you were to ask me to do it all over again, I would be up for the challenge. But I still get nervous for guys when their gloves come off. I catch myself holding my breath and twitching a bit as a fight develops. I know these fighters are doing everything they can to stay in the game.

actually while watching the fight develop on tuesday in the nucks opening pre season game, i felt a pit in my stomach. With what happened to Rypien and co this summer, i dont think ill ever see enforces fighting in the same light again
that being said, i dont think it would be appropriate to take fighting out of the game. you do need it to keep guys in check...which ironically the instigator rule negates.

What I don't understand is that he already announced his retirement, so I'm not sure if he'll actually play any games though. Assuming that's true, he's going to get $1M for nothing? At the very least, it's a classy move by the organization for a classy guy.

Stop the presses! The hard-partying Bruins [team stats], who have been tearing up the town since winning the Stanley Cup, refused a round of shots that “R.I.P.D.” star — and huge Canucks fan — Ryan Reynolds sent over to their table at Red Lantern the other night.
Hmmm . . . seems as though the Stanley Cup champs aren’t quite over the trash-talking, blind-siding and general bad behavior of the Vancouver crybabies during the finals!
Here’s what we know: The B’s and their posse — 22 of them — were dining in the Stanhope Street hot spot just a little too close to the Canadian-born Sexiest Man Alive, who felt the need to stand up for his hometown heroes. There was some, um, chatting back and forth, which, we’re told, resulted in RyReyn sending over 22 shots of tequila to the Black & Gold bunch. Quite sporting of him, but it didn’t make up for the hit on Horton, if you ask us . . .
Oddly, the Stanley Cup champs refused the liquid olive branch and offered the tequila to a table of bachelorette party revelers. . . .

Letourneau-Leblond suspended five games for boarding (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=376468)
This was a relatively low-key incident during Tuesday's game in Vancouver. But what I found really nice is that on the TSN page, there's an actual video from Brendan Shanahan explaining why he handed out a 5-game suspension. That puts him miles ahead of Colin Campbell, in my books.

Mason Raymond breaks silence over Stanley Cup final injury - News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/sports/article/280416--mason-raymond-breaks-silence-over-stanley-cup-final-injury)
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver Canucks forward Mason Raymond spoke to the media today for the first time since breaking his back in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Bruins in Boston. Raymond says that he still does not have a firm timeline for his return and says that his status is indefinite.
Raymond, 26 hasn't been skating yet but has been working out in the gym and says that he had a back brace on until late July. "That was the most pain I've been in ever, when it initally happened," said Raymond. He's been keeping up his cardio but still has not been doing any heavy lifting.
The team originally predicted that Raymond would be out 4 to 6 months which would suggest a late November or early December return. Raymond says that Boston's Johnny Boychuk, who delivered the hit did contact him this summer. "I heard from Johnny, I guess, late July via text message and just kinda said he didn't mean to," said Raymond.
Raymond doesn't hold any resentment for Boychuk but admits it was frustrating that he couldn't finish the Stanley Cup Final and he is not able to start the season.

That's great news that Shanahan suspended that Calgary player. This should mean that Shelley will get suspended too. That was a disgusting, completely unnecessary hit especially in the PRE-SEASON. It's equivalent to a flagrant foul in the NBA during pre-season.. SMH :seriously:

VANCOUVER — Three months after suffering a broken vertebrae in the Stanley Cup final, Vancouver Canucks winger Mason Raymond can't say for sure that he will play again. But he felt lucky to be be able to walk into his meeting with reporters on Thursday and is hopeful that he will meet initial projections and resume his National Hockey League career by mid-season.
"At the end of the day, it could have been worse," Raymond said. "I'm lucky to be standing here today with arms and legs moving. I'm still having some discomfort with some soft tissue, but it's coming along well and I'm happy with the process.
"Whenever you have something in that [spinal] area, you have a serous risk of having additional problems. So, yeah, I feel lucky."
The 26-year-old was injured in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup in Boston when Bruins defenceman Johnny Boychuk finished his check by shoving Raymond backwards into the boards. Raymond was bent over in a vulnerable position as Boychuk had his stick between the Canuck's legs.
Raymond said Boychuk contacted him in July by text message. Ironically — or hypocritically — Bruins winger Nathan Horton complained to reporters in August that Canuck Aaron Rome contacted him only by text message to apologize for a late hit that saw Horton concussed and Rome suspended the rest of the series.
"I heard from Johnny in late July via a text message," Raymond confirmed. "He said he didn't mean to [cause injury]. That's hockey. Incidents happen. Obviously I'm frustrated not to the finish the game or the season, nor am I starting the season here. I'll move on and get stronger for it."
Raymond refused to say how he responded to Boychuk's text, nor provide much detail about his rehabilitation other than to stress it is a long process involving several stages.
His back brace was removed in late July and Raymond said he is able to work on his conditioning but is doing no heavy lifting. He hasn't yet skated.
Raymond said the injury is "weird" and unlike anything he has experienced.
"I'm moving very well now compared to what I was," he said. "You believe in your mind that you're going to keep getting better and you forward."
No penalty was called on Boychuk.

I believe Marc Crawford said this last week...i think.
One thing Hodgson needs to show the team is that he is willing to play and show that he's got what it takes to crack the Canucks line up.
I translate this as the following.
Even if the situation isnt the best, play like u mean it out there.
I feel pretty comfortable watching Eddie Lack in net right now..

ESPN picked up the "Roxy Flu" with some interesting stories... LOLOL
NHL players catch the "Roxy flu" in Vancouver - ESPN The Magazine - ESPN (http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/7008347/nhl-players-catch-roxy-flu-vancouver-espn-magazine)
IT'S 11:30 P.M. ON VANCOUVER'S GRANVILLE STREET, a few hours after the Canucks bungled a chance to close out the Predators in the second round of the playoffs. win or lose, this downtown strip of pizza joints and bars crackles with energy -- enough to fuel a riot, as the city would later find out.
Tonight the energy is being channeled for one big party, and nowhere is the party crazier than at the Roxy.
The beer-and-whiskey joint doesn't look like anything special from the outside, with its burgundy awning and blipping marquee lights, but hockey fans know you can often spot the sport's biggest names letting loose there, if you can get in. On this evening, a three-hour line reeks of aftershave and cigarettes. As bouncers survey wannabe VIPs and girls in slinky dresses, someone yells, "Shane O'Brien is inside buying everybody drinks!" The rumor turns out to be false, but the eager crowd knows no better. Who wouldn't want to throw down with the ex-Canucks defenseman? After all, he was banished to Nashville last year supposedly because he loved the Roxy too much.
Inside, the vibe is more Saskatoon than South Beach. The lights are dim, the walls are festooned in memorabilia and it's shout-to-talk loud when the music gets cranking. Booths line the wall across from the stage, and in between, a dance floor is filled with loitering drinkers. The carpet could use a deep clean or maybe an exorcism. The bathrooms are the kind you wouldn't want your mother to know you use.
The Roxy isn't bottle service and menus infested with "tini" suffixes. It's puck bunnies in tank tops and a cover band in front of exposed brick. Despite the grungy vibe -- or perhaps because of it -- this is a joint where a big shot like O'Brien feels at ease. "The crazy relationship between us and hockey was nothing that was contrived," says Peter Martin, the Roxy's manager and an employee since it opened 24 years ago. "It just sort of happened. It's a good, safe bar to go to, and the players figured that out on their own 20 years ago."
"
The Roxy isn't bottle service and menus infested with "tini" suffixes. It's puck bunnies in tank tops and a cover band in front of exposed brick.
"
The place is so renowned as a hockey haunt, and its impact the day after so deeply felt, that Vancouver natives coined the term "Roxy flu" to describe its effect. It can hit anyone, but visiting players who enjoy mixed company and mixed drinks are especially susceptible. "There have definitely been games when the Roxy effect has been a big factor," Martin says.
Just look at what happened to the Stars last January. They had two nights off in Vancouver, but you'd think they'd just gotten off the red-eye after a 7-1 loss in which the Canucks scored on three of their first five shots. The next day's headline from British Columbia paper The Province read, "'Roxy Effect' takes its toll on Stars."
The Canucks owned the NHL's best home record last season, but they were formidable opponents wherever they played, leading the league in goals scored and fewest goals allowed. Still, among Canadians, the legend of the Roxy flu has taken on a life of its own.
The reporter on that Province story, Tony Gallagher, said his paper went with the Roxy headline not just because he "knew it to be accurate" but because "any reference to the Roxy has become shorthand for players having too much fun in Vancouver." In the words of Vesa Rantanen, another veteran NHL reporter and a Roxy regular, "If you smell like booze the next morning, it means you went to the Roxy -- even if you emptied the minibar at your hotel room."
Whenever a team skates into town and gets waxed, as the Flyers did in a 6-2 loss last December, locals simply assume the bar deserves an assist. During a postgame interview on Hockey Night in Canada last season, broadcaster Scott Oake asked Vancouver center Ryan Kesler, "Does the Roxy deserve a place in the Canucks' ring of honor for the 30 or 40 wins it may have helped you get over the years?" The alternate captain replied, "I definitely think we should give them some tickets to the game."
Kesler's tongue was planted firmly in cheek, but asked about the flu now, he's a true believer. "We're a good team and we earn those wins, but maybe the Roxy makes a game a bit more one-sided or slows a team down enough that they can't come into our building and steal one," he says. "I think it definitely limits reaction times, if you know what I mean."
BLAME CAMERA PHONES. These days, when you exercise your constitutional rights to get debauched (or, north of the border, your Charter of Rights), you are just a snotty Facebook post away from winding up as a cautionary tale. O'Brien became a short-timer in Vancouver after he showed up late to an 11 a.m. skate-around in the spring of 2010. Being tardy to work when you're earning $1.6 million is never a good career move but even less so when everyone recognized you at the Roxy the night before. The Canucks sat O'Brien for four games and traded him to Nashville after the season. When he returned to Vancouver with the Predators in the 2011 playoffs, the defenseman drew the attention of the Canucks' shrink-wrapped superfans, the Green Men, who waved a sign reading, "Which way to the Roxy?" beside the penalty box when O'Brien served minutes. (O'Brien, who signed with Colorado in July, wouldn't comment for this story.)
Jeremy Roenick, a Roxy devotee in his playing days, remembers going there on his first visit to Vancouver as a Blackhawks rookie in the late 1980s. His wildest night at the Roxy came a few years later, when the Bulls were in town playing the Grizzlies. Roenick hit the bar with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. "They held court like nobody's business," Roenick says. "All the girls were all over Rodman, and he was loving every minute of it."
The bar's drawing power transcends borders. After winning men's hockey gold in the Winter Olympics in 2010, Team Canada celebrated at the Roxy. So did the women of the Finnish team after they beat Sweden for the hockey bronze.
"
Do the Canucks always seem to disappoint in the playoffs because visitors are less likely to hit it hard at the Roxy when the Stanley Cup is on the line?
"
Perhaps the most notorious night at the Roxy came later that year, when Patrick Kane and his then-Blackhawks teammates John Madden and Kris Versteeg started an evening at the Roxy and ended it shirtless, flexing for photos, in a limo filled with women. That regular-season tomfoolery didn't stop the Blackhawks from torching the Canucks in the playoffs that spring. Which raises an interesting question: Do the Canucks always seem to disappoint in the playoffs because visitors are less likely to hit it hard at the Roxy when the Stanley Cup is on the line?
To be clear, many players dispute the existence of the Roxy flu in the first place. Late last season, the Bruins wrapped up a Tuesday night win in Calgary and headed for Vancouver. Sure enough, at 11:30 p.m. that Thursday, a trio of Bruins, including Vancouver native Milan Lucic, eased past the Roxy line and made their way to a back bar. They grabbed some beers, chatted among themselves, smiled at a few pretty girls and soon left, all with minimal fanfare. In a harbinger of their Game 7 Stanley Cup win that led to the riots, the Bruins beat the Canucks 3-1 that Saturday. "I don't believe in the Roxy effect," says Lucic. "It's just a bar."
If anything, some say an evening at the Roxy? -- or any bar, for that matter -- can motivate a player who knows that his teammates and coaches will be scrutinizing him after a long night out. As Roenick says, guilt is an underappreciated performance enhancer. "Staying up to 3 a.m., drinking beers and pounding shots down, they know they better be at their best the next day," he says. "If you can't handle it, guys will know, and there will be repercussions."
While there aren't any studies that prove the Roxy flu's existence, one way or the other, the bar's reputation precedes itself. Former Canucks coach Marc Crawford remembers the day when Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger, a native of Hanna, Alberta, skated up to him during an event at GM Place, now Rogers Arena. The singer gave the coach a heads-up: "You guys are going to win tonight for sure." Kroeger had been at the Roxy the night before and had seen the opposing team partying like rock stars. Whether it was the flu or just the bounce of the puck, the Canucks pulled out a win that night, and the legend of the Roxy grew.
RANTANEN CAN'T RECALL the visiting team or the year, but he remembers the woman who approached him in the Roxy after a late-'90s game. Flirting with intent, she asked, "Which team do you play for?"
Rantanen doesn't play. He's an editor for Veikkaaja, the biggest sports magazine in Finland. He was introduced to the bar's charms by Roxy devotee Esa Tikkanen, the five-time Stanley Cup winner and fellow Fin. "I'm a reporter," Rantanen told the woman. She excused herself politely. "And boom!" Rantanen says. "She scanned the room and found a player. Five minutes later, they were gone."
This, ultimately, is what makes the Roxy special. Inside the bar, a reporter can be mistaken for a player, and a player can blend in as a regular dude. Or maybe a retired player can mistake himself for a rock star.
Take the night of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals. After the Canucks' 1-0 home win, the party roared along Granville Street. Soon, word swirled that Roenick was at the Roxy. Alex Ruiz was already in the bar. She works for the Flames' website but grew up in Vancouver. Knowing the bouncers, she skipped the line and was in prime position to catch Roenick jump on stage to belt the Tone-Loc classic "Funky Cold Medina."
The band, Troys 'R Us, didn't make a big deal of it, and neither did Roenick. "Girls is all jockin' at the other end of the bar," he rapped. "Havin' drinks with some no-name chump when they know that I'm the star."
The crowd ate it up but didn't mob him afterward. They snapped photos, raised an appropriate amount of hell and kept on.
In one regard, it was a delirious and bizarre moment. At the Roxy, it was just part of the effect.

Vigneault an idiot? The silly season begins
I’m not sure what is more absurd: the idea that Alain Vigneault is a buffoon and the biggest obstacle to the Canucks winning the Stanley Cup, or that evidence of this is that the pre-season-opening deployment of Cody Hodgson reflects the coach’s determination to see his top prospect fail – even at the expense of the team’s success.
You can see my dilemma. Which theory is less sensible?
Vigneault is easily the winningest coach in franchise history, a three-time (in eight seasons) NHL coach-of-year finalist who has pushed every significant Canuck player to his best season and whose winning percentage makes Pat Quinn look like Tom Watt. (No offence to the big Irishman, although I doubt he’s surfing the web to read hockey blogs).
And Hodgson is one exhibition game into his third full training camp and, at age 21, remains an excellent NHL prospect. The thing that has hindered Hodgson nearly as much as injuries is the constant stream of gossipy stories – real and imagined – about his relationship to the Canucks, his teammates, the GM and the coach.
Please, for once, can we just let Cody Hodgson play? If he’s good enough to be in the NHL this season, he’ll prove it and be on the Canucks. Vigneault’s only agenda is to win.
