A great save by a goalie to me is when a goalie kicks his leg out to stop a puck that's going in, or catching a puck with glove after being deflected (not the puck hitting the glove and goaling feeling it and then waving the glove in the air as if he actually moved to get it)...... yes, being in position is also cool, but only if the goalies is following the puck and is there in anticipation.

Just now Luigi was looking around for the puck. Lost sight of it. Good thing he's big.

For the regulation goal,
I'm really struggling to understand his belly flop move, and why it's not being corrected.
He first goes down in the butterfly to save the initial shot.
Then he clearly sprawls down on his stomach and spreads his legs as a save selection to block the lower side of the net before the shot was even taken.
It even looks like Lu might have tried to do a paddle/poke check (through carter's legs??) while sprawling forward.

Carter's on his backhand, and I would think most goalies would have stayed in
the butterfly block (which also protects high shots), it should have been an easy save.

Although a moot point, since the goal somehow still snuck through low even though Luongo had his pad flat on the ice...

But just saying... his belly flop move especially on that goal was :fulloffuck:
Carter didn't even have the room to move laterally on his backhand so there was no reason to spread out low to cover post to post like that.
And butterfly block in tight like that pretty much seals up all holes, high and low...

It's frustrating.
No, I'm not Roland Melanson. Before the "Let's see you play in the NHL", No, I'm not better than Luongo.
But anyone that's played or understands goaltending knows sprawling down in that particular situation is flawed.

He's not like a Pekka Rinne or even a Dwayne Roloson, who for the most part is solid, but sometimes goals get by. The goals that get by almost always look like it's "his fault" which is why I think people rag on him so much. Tim Thomas had the same problem, as did Dom Hasek.

well it's like when nashville see's that rinne is playing shitty once a blue moon, they pretty much just say "yeah he's having a bad night."
or the other case is, when rinne is beat, you have to really work for it. point blank shots from the FO circle usually dont cut it.

Personally I'm indifferent to AV, leaning more towards not liking him personally but I can't say I think his ego gets in the way of winning as the Canucks have done fairly well under him. AV isn't stupid, he'll use Hodgson in a shootout because he knows Cody is one of the more offensively gifted players on the team.

I do think however his stubborness gets the better of him at times. I've said before from what I have gather, AV has an annoyance for guys like Hodgson, Grabner and Shirokov, offensively hyped guys and how he keeps hearing that these guys should be giving top 6 roles, so he purposely is extra hard on them and keeps them on a short leash, almost in a way making it a point to everyone that this is his team and he'll do things his way.

For example last year, Shirokov gets called up, was the best Canucks' player on the ice, scores a goal in the Colorado game, then gets stapled to the bench the rest of the game, but guys like Desbiens, Glass, Bolduc & Rome can make all the mistakes they want and be given the chance to work through them. Again, as I have gathered, those guys remind AV of himself when he was a player, not particularly talented but grinds away.

But it was Seguin who single handedly kept the Bruins from getting knocked out by TB.

I've said before from what I have gather, AV has an annoyance for guys like Hodgson, Grabner and Shirokov, offensively hyped guys and how he keeps hearing that these guys should be giving top 6 roles, so he purposely is extra hard on them and keeps them on a short leash, almost in a way making it a point to everyone that this is his team and he'll do things his way.

For example last year, Shirokov gets called up, was the best Canucks' player on the ice, scores a goal in the Colorado game, then gets stapled to the bench the rest of the game, but guys like Desbiens, Glass, Bolduc & Rome can make all the mistakes they want and be given the chance to work through them. Again, as I have gathered, those guys remind AV of himself when he was a player, not particularly talented but grinds away.

Every coach has their preference of players, right or wrong, AV is just harder on young offensive guys. Do I think AV gets in the way of the Canucks winning? No. Do I think the Canucks could be better if AV gave guys like Hodgson the same length leash as Rome, yes.

Definitely seems like AV favours the sandpaper players who don't know how to score. I guess it's cause he wasn't considered a 'skilled' player during his years?

There is a natural cynicism born of watching the Vancouver Canucks for their legion of fans over the 42 years the franchise has been going and there is a tendency not to recognize what's here before our eyes.

Perhaps it's all that time without winning a championship but then, really, there have only been five or six years when winning a title was reasonably possible. The first trip to the final in '82 would have been a goalie driven fluke of the highest order and the Flames should have smoked the Canucks in the first round in '94 had their coach Dave King not insisted on snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

You hear longtime fans getting down on this year's team from time to time on talk radio or in the comments online and even we in the media often lose perspective over some issue whether it's a goalie shuffle or whether somebody is playing enough or too much. But the real Vancouver fan should recognize that the time to enjoy a team this good is now. This is pretty much as good as it gets unless you somehow get to an Oilers-Islanders-Habs like dynasty somehow. Remember there have been too many years when it's been terrible and those years will one day return. Now is the time to enjoy, celebrate and relish this team. Believe me, over the years there have been some bad ones.

This team has superstars, great balance of offence and defence, great leadership, management and ownership, the latter two working or at least appearing to work in harmony when that's not always been the case. The Aquilini family and Mike Gillis seem to enjoy each others support and company. It's not like the days when ownership was from out of town as in the days of Tom Scallen and later with John McCaw. These aren't the days when Pat Quinn wasn't hired by the McCaw people so you were never sure if they were on the same page. Nor is this a time when Brian Burke was at odds with the McCaw group over a contract extension. This act seems to be together and it shows.

Just watching the Sedins can be intoxicating all by itself. Sure they have games when they don't perform miracles but most of the time just watching them pass, battle for pucks behind the opposing goaltender to set up plays is amazing. Maybe it's like having a great view from your house. You see it so much you don't appreciate it like you should. These guys are utterly great and great to watch, and one day soon they'll have to retire. Enjoy it while you can.

A goaltending controversy? Most of the teams in the league should be so lucky. Goaltending problem? No chance. A goaltending controversy/problem is when you go into a playoff series with a team you thought could seriously compete for a title with Alex Auld as your No. 1. A goaltending problem is when you don't know whether to use Curt Ridley or Dunc Wilson. No matter who you think should start for the Canucks, the work done is apt to be outstanding compared to the goaltending this franchise has had in it's past. Burke, Quinn in the lesser Kirk McLean years, Harry Neale, Jake Milford (except '82) and Jack Gordon would have killed for goaltending like this. To make being a hockey fan worthwhile at all, you have to be able to enjoy the good times. And if you're one of those guys who likes to see the Canucks lose, well, you usually have to wait well into the spring before it happens.

The last two years the Canucks have had the best defensive corps in the team's history. If Dan Hamhuis stays healthy in the final last year, chances are they win a Cup going away. They may have lost a shade this year with Christian Ehrhoff's departure but on the 42-year scale, this is way up there. No offence intended here but you get some idea of the poverty when you realize that one of the most lionized D men in franchise history is Harold Snepsts. Yet on blog posts and comment sheets online, you'd think this team was somewhere near the cellar.

Perhaps we in the media are partly responsible, but to some degree it's our job to be inquisitive and not cheerlead. You can't do puff pieces every day, like this one might seem to most. But fans need to chill out and enjoy this. All teams hope and strive for the Detroit model but chances are performance at this level is going to be all too fleeting.

Hardly a day goes by that somebody doesn't ask me the question: "What happened to Pratt?" That would be David Pratt, the in-your-face sports broadcaster absent from our local airwaves for seven weeks since his con-tract expired at Team 1040 on Aug. 31.

Pratt hosted the station's key on-air slot from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for 10 years. It was billed as the Pratt & Taylor Show, but in reality, it was Pratt's full-time gig with Sportsnet's Don Taylor sitting in what was clearly the second chair.

It was the perfect "good guy, bad guy" setup. Pratt would draw the ire of listeners with his opinionated and often out-rageous rants while Taylor, wearing the white hat, would try to smooth things over.

Pratt relished the role.

It was a lucrative ride for both Pratt and Team 1040. Adver-tisers lined up to be part of it. As sports talk shows go, ratings went through the roof and Pratt basked in the limelight as his paycheques grew over the years.

Always the villain, he would take great delight in sharing with his listeners that he trav-elled to events by limousine, drank only the finest of whisky and enjoyed bachelorhood to the fullest. He worked hard and played hard, as though it would never end.

Pratt was hit with the first inkling something might be up when management at Team 1040 didn't show any great concern months before Pratt's contract expired on Aug. 31. It was almost as if both parties agreed they needed each other and things would be resolved in due time.

But a brash and confident Pratt rolled the dice demanding much more than management was prepared to meet and the 10-year partnership imploded. Sadly, neither party won. Love him or hate him, Pratt's presence on Team 1040 has been missed. And while Pratt figured he would be instantly scooped up by either Rogers Sportsnet or TSN, nothing has happened.

I know from personal conversations that the big britches Pratt was wearing three months ago have been dramatically taken in at the seams.

What I don't know is if management at Team 1040 would consider revisiting the situation. Not to have a star return to his dressing room door, but to take him back to host a one-or two-hour show in current time slots that could use some help.

With Thursday's announce-ment that the Canucks and Team 1040 (Bell Media) have extended their partnership with a new long-term radio rights deal through the 2016-17 NHL season, there is even more reason to suggest that Pratt be granted a mulligan.

Pratt can be annoying and offensive, yet somewhere in the mix there lies a unique and charming talent that has been missed on local radio these past three months.

Now before you get too far into this column let me preface this by saying this is not an official trade, this is merely what I think the Vancouver Canucks should do.

The Canucks should trade Roberto Luongo to the Tampa Bay Lightning and here is why.

First and foremost Luongo can’t trigger a trade until sometime around 2015 but that doesn’t mean he won’t waive his no trade clause to go to the right situation. Past precedent has shown that if a player is offered the right opportunity they would waive their no trade clause. Tampa Bay would be that opportunity for Luongo.

Luongo has family that lives in Florida and they go back there during the off-season. So there would be a huge appeal to playing a lot closer to family and home.

As we saw last playoffs the Lightning made a nice run and are close to being a contender, however they are in desperate need of a goaltender. With superstars like Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier along with young stars like Brett Connolly, Victor Hedman and Teddy Purcell the Lightning have a team that is ready to contend.

It appears that age has finally caught up to Dwayne Roloson as his numbers have dropped off from where they were last season and even his career. Roloson’s 3.67 GAA is the highest of his career and his 0.882 SV% is the lowest of his career. Roloson is better suited as a veteran back-up.

Tampa Bay needs to make a move now before the hole gets too big, they are currently sitting 13th overall in the Eastern Conference and just five points out of a playoff spot. Over the last 10 games the Lightning are 3-7-0. The Lightning stars are either in their prime or entering their prime so now is the time to contend. Tampa Bay needs to address their goaltending and Luongo would be a great fit. Don’t forget that Luongo already has a relationship with GM Steve Yzerman from the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The Canucks will have to address their goaltending this season as Cory Schneider has proven that he is ready to be a starter in the NHL and his contract is up. Schneider will be a restricted free agent this off-season but you can count on several teams making large offers. Canucks can’t afford to keep both goalies forcing them to move one.

So what would the Canucks want for Luongo?

The Canucks are in need of a big power forward and Ryan Malone would fit that bill. Malone is 6-4 and 224 pounds and would be strong force in front of the net. Malone has five 20+ goal seasons and brings a vast amount of playoff experience, including a run with Pittsburgh to the finals in 2008. Malone could line-up with the twins on the first line, where he would create havoc for the goalie while the twins are cycling the puck.

As nice as it would be to be off the hook for the remaining years of Luongo’s contract it would take more than Malone. Tampa would need to add some youth into the deal. Connolly is not as option as he was Yzerman’s first draft pick as the Lightning’s GM. Hedman isn’t going anywhere either as Yzerman knows firsthand how valuable an elite #1 defenceman is. A player like Carter Ashton would be available.

Ashton is a 6-3 and 215 pound power forward prospect. Ashton can play either wing which is important as the Canucks are deep at center. Ashton was a scoring machine in the WHL where he scored 30 or more goals twice despite playing for three different WHL teams. Ashton has shown the same scoring ability in the AHL where he has 13 goals and 22 points in 27 AHL games.

The Canucks would want a veteran goalie to back-up Schneider so adding Mathieu Garon to the mix would give them a goalie with 10 years experience. Garon has proven to be a very reliable back-up goaltender that would help develop Schneider into an elite goaltender.

Cap wise this deal works for both teams. Tampa Bay according to capgeek.com currently has around $3,000,000 in cap space. Luongo’s remaining cap hit is just over $3,000,000 so the deal could work.

Remember that even though Luongo may be an elite goaltender the package in return for him may not involve an elite player going back to the Canucks. Part of the appeal for trading Luongo would be getting out from under his 12 year contract.

The deal would look like this Luongo for Malone, Ashton, Garon and a draft pick, this deal makes sense for both sides, the Canucks move Luongo and his big contract while promoting Schneider as their new number one. Vancouver adds a big net presence and power forward that will line-up with the twins, as well as a power forward prospect. Tampa Bay gets an elite goalie to get them over the hump. Luongo gets to still play for a contender while being close to home. It’s a win-win-win deal.

Like I said this is not a real deal just something I think would help both teams involved. I am looking forward to seeing what transpire with the Canucks goaltending situation.
