thought it got cancelled because people were threatening etc

I'm sure that people are dumb enough to threaten but no one should be butt hurt enough to actually do something about it.

I'm upset that the canucks didn't win and I'm very upset with the way we lost but I'm disgusted with how some "fans" (more like idiots) looted and fucked up our city.

Likewise, I bet it is these "fans" who are threatening and deserve to be knocked the fuck out.

I'd say it's more than a "maybe". The guy had some pretty serious mental issues, which actually explains his suicidal tendencies to fight bigger guys. Also explains the incident where he went after a fan... It got to the point where he couldn't even play any more, which is pretty bad, and I guess the time off didn't help at all.

Anyone know if Ripper ever had concussion problems? If so, this is just another suicide/overdose in a looooooooooooooong line of very sick, depressed athletes and pro wrestlers. If not, the poor guy was just ill :okay:

Former Canuck Rick Rypien found dead - News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/sports/article/264538--former-canuck-rick-rypien-found-dead)

COLEMAN, AB (NEWS1130) - Former Vancouver Canucks player Rick Rypien was found dead in his Coleman, Alberta home by a family member on Monday afternoon. He was 27-years-old.

Rypien spent a half dozen seasons in the Canucks organization, where he played 119 games and had nine goals, seven assists and 226 penalty minutes.

He signed a one-year contract with the Winnipeg Jets as a free agent in July. Rypien was familiar with the ownership of the Jets, as that group owned the Canucks farm team, the Manitoba Moose during the forward's time with the Canucks.

With the Canucks, Rypien had taken a couple of leaves of absence during his tenure for personal reasons. His most recent time away from the club came last November. He returned to hockey in the spring and played 18 games in the regular season and playoffs with the Moose in Winnipeg.

Rypien's agent Allain Roy spoke with his client on Saturday morning and said the centre was looking forward to training camp with the Jets next month.

RCMP in southwestern Alberta have told several media outlets, they have confirmed a non-suspicious, sudden death.

comments from players around the league and his family:

Rick Rypien found dead in Alberta
COLEMAN, Alta. — Winnipeg Jets forward Rick Rypien was found dead on Monday in southern Alberta. He was 27.

The rugged centre had played parts of six National Hockey League seasons with the Vancouver Canucks before signing a $700,000, one-year deal with the Jets this summer as a free agent.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm Rick’s passing,” True North Sports & Entertainment, the company that owns the Jets, said in a news release.

“As many people are aware, Rick had strong ties to True North Sports & Entertainment, the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club, the former Manitoba Moose Hockey Club and the Vancouver Canucks. We would like to express our sincere sympathies to the Rypien family as well as Rick’s friends.

“We also appreciate all of the support that has come pouring in from Rick’s fans. Rick was a talented player with an extremely bright future. His hunger for the game made him a valued team member both on and off the ice. This loss has impacted us as more than just a hockey team.”

The Canucks issued the following statement Monday night in regards to the passing of Rypien:

“It is with tremendous sadness that the Vancouver Canucks confirm the passing of Rick Rypien. Rick has been a beloved member of the Canucks family for the past six years.

“Rick was a great teammate and friend to our players, coaches and staff. We send our deepest condolences to the Rypien family at this most difficult time.”

Some NHL players used Twitter to offer their condolences to Rypien’s family.

“Thoughts and prayers go out to Rick Rypien’s family. Another good soldier leaving us too soon!” Michael Del Zotto of the New Rangers wrote on his page on the social media website.

“Rest in peace Rick Rypien. Another very sad day In the hockey world,” Tyler Bozak of the Toronto Maple Leafs wrote.

Cousin Angela Rypien, a quarterback for Seattle Mist in the Lingerie Football League, wrote via Twitter on Monday: “R.I.P Rick Rypien, I love you so much and will miss you more than anything!”

And former teammate Bill Sweatt, from AHL’s Manitoba Moose, wrote via Twitter Monady night: “Tragic story. #rickrypien found dead. This is just terrible. RIP rick. You were a great teammate and friend.”

Rypien is the second active NHL player to die this year. New YorkRangers forward Derek Boogaard died in May of a drug overdose.

When Rypien took what the Canucks deemed a “personal leave” away from the team last November, general manager Mike Gillis had this to say then about the 27-year-old enforcer:

“I can’t talk about Rick’s situation,” Gillis told Vancouver Sun columnist Iain MacIntyre.

“But when you come to know somebody and realize they’re a really good person, who has their heart in the right place and wants to do the right thing not only for themselves but for others, you have to support them.

“You don’t only support them when they’re at the top of their game and doing everything you want, you support them when they’re not feeling good about things or have other issues they have to deal with. These are young people that have a lot to offer, a lot to live for, and you support them in any way possible.”

It was later reported Rypien left the team for mental health reasons but the Canucks never commented or confirmed that report.

“We know a lot of stuff about these guys that isn’t out in the public domain,” Gillis said in November. “We’re not isolated from them. We’re not here to interfere or micro-manage them, but we’re here to help them any way we can. It’s far more like a family than people might think.”

It was the second time in three years the forward had left the team to deal with an undisclosed personal matter. Rypien also took an extended personal leave after a rash of injuries two years ago, missing 70 games during the 2008-09 season

In 119 career NHL games, he had nine goals and seven assists and racked up 226 penalty minutes.

The 5-11, 190-pound forward was known for being willing to take on all comers during his professional career and was a fan favourite in Vancouver and Winnipeg.

A ferocious but undersized fighter, Rypien let his temper get the best of him when he got involved in a scuffle with a fan in Minnesota on Oct. 19, 2010. While being sent off the ice following a fight, Rypien grabbed the shirt of 28-year-old James Engquist who was seated behind the Canucks bench and appeared to be applauding Rypien's ejection.

National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman handed the Canuck a six-game suspension for the incident but the Canucks, particularly Gillis, were fierce in their support of Rypien, something the rugged forward appreciated.

“It's comforting for me to know the people who really know me, know the character I have,” Rypien said last October. “The fact that they're in my corner and helped me out, I'm very thankful for that. My mindset now is I want to make them proud and make it up to them and do the very best I can.”

Some Vancouver fans are shaken by Rypien's death, among them are Alex Ransford, Folake Adesugba and Ellen Ransford. The three created a Facebook event, Rick Rypien Celebration of Life, to honour the late hockey player.

"We plan to bring a big book for everyone to write their condolences in and hopefully we will get the book to the Rypien family," it says on the event's Facebook page.

The event is scheduled to take place from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Roger Nielson statue outside Rogers Arena. So far, more than 100 guests have already responded as "attending" on Facebook.

Ultimate teammate hid his dark emotions
Scrappy player Rypien battled with depression
By: Gary Lawless
Posted: 08/15/2011 10:54 PM

Rick Rypien punched above his weight class most nights in pro hockey as well as in his everyday battle with depression.
Often Rypien was able to win on the ice but his illness refused to stay in the shadows.
The 27-year-old Winnipeg Jets winger was found dead Monday in his home near Coleman, Alta.
Rypien saw action in parts of six NHL seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, but played in just 119 games over that time due to injuries and two separate leaves from the team due to personal issues.
After leaving the Canucks this past season to deal with his illness, Rypien came to Winnipeg, the place of his start as a pro, to play for the Moose and rejuvenate his career.
The normally businesslike Rypien arrived in Winnipeg tanned, relaxed and much quicker with a smile than the media had ever seen in his previous stints with the Moose.
Former teammate, roommate and dressing room stall neighbour Mike Keane said Rypien had appeared to find some peace in his life.
"He seemed to be in a good place. We chatted off and on this summer and he was happy with the way things were going and the way he was feeling," said Keane. "I don’t know what to say. It’s a shock. His demons were stronger than anyone knew."
Jets assistant GM Craig Heisinger brought Rypien to Winnipeg back in the Manitoba Moose days and was the player’s greatest champion.
Heisinger was Rypien’s confidante, friend and supporter.
When the Jets began signing free agents as a new NHL team, it was no surprise to anyone with a passing knowledge of the relationship between the two men that the Jets added Rypien.
Jets owner Mark Chipman commented on the day Rypien was signed that the team had immeasurably upped its character quotient.
"I was happy he had signed with the Jets. Zinger and Chip had Rip’s best interests in mind. They looked out for him and they wanted the best for him," said Keane. "They took care of him when he needed it. I was happy he was back here because it was the right place for him."
Rypien arrived in Winnipeg an undrafted free agent in the spring of 2005 and immediately earned the respect and admiration of Moose coach Randy Carlyle.
Carlyle famously mistrusted rookies, but Rypien proved to be responsible defensively and willing to do whatever he could to help his team win.
Others noticed, too, and it took Rypien less than a season to go from a skinny but deadly AHL middleweight to an NHL buzz saw.
Heisinger discovered Rypien playing for the Regina Pats in the Western Hockey League and described him as "a really good player on a really bad team."
Heisinger noted that Rypien never quit in games as a junior despite most of them being losing causes. Heisinger reasoned the player would bring that same will to pro hockey.
Boy, was he right.
His first night in a Moose jersey, Rypien took on a much larger opponent in a scrap in front of the Moose bench and despite the size disadvantage managed to score a victory. His new teammates could hardly believe their eyes as this wisp of a boy, who couldn’t put together a moustache if you spotted him three months, hung on for dear life and kept firing punches until his dance partner wore out and moved in for the clinch.
It was the ultimate first impression as the banging of sticks against the Moose bench boards told the whole building.
Rypien was bone sewn together with sinew covered by a layer of muscle. His body was all angles and edges and he threw it at any and all opponents with complete abandon.
"He was the ultimate teammate," said Keane. "We were roommates for a couple of years and we sat beside each other in the room. You couldn’t ask for anything more. You could see it in the way he played. He played hard and he stuck up for his teammates. He worked hard on his game and constantly tried to get better. That’s how you win in pro hockey, with people like Rip."
Calgary Flames forward Guillaume Desbiens played with Rypien in Manitoba and Vancouver.
"It’s messed up. I just found out. I’m flabbergasted," said Desbiens from his home in Montreal. "From the first time you met Rip, he was a great guy to be around. His personal problems have been written about a lot lately and that paints him in a bad light. He was easy to be around and fun to be around. He was a great teammate , the kind of guy you looked forward to coming to the rink with and building a team."

It will be interesting to see how the NHL responds to this incident and how the media write about it once the dust settles.

Was this an isolated incident where a hockey player had past emotional or mental problems/issues (ie. depression), or was this the result of the lifestyle of NHL hockey enforcers?

Think about it. How many people could do what players like Rypien and Boogaard did game in and game out? How many sports do you know where bare knuckle fighting is allowed to occur?

These guys have to play this kind of style just to make it in the bigs. They may not want to play that style, but if thats the only way to play the game they love, they take on the risk.

I remember a George Parros interview, where he said he had to make a decision near his rookie year about changing his game to being a tough guy, because he wouldn't last in the league if he didn't.

You basically have to man up and fight, even if you don't want to. Youtubing all of Rypien's fights, you can't help but think that this is going to ware you down mentally and physically.

Some sentiments from sports media I agree with:

From Mark Spector at Sportsnet:

"Rypien was, pound-for-pound, as punishing a fighter as we can recall seeing in years. Like a Wendel Clark in the old Norris Division, Rypien regularly beat up Edmonton's Zack Stortini(notes), despite giving up five inches and 25 lbs.

"And that's what always puzzles about players who do what these guys do. They always look so comfortable in their craft when they set the ground rules with a fellow enforcer while waiting for the puck to be dropped. You never see the fear when they stand there in front of 18,000 fans, bare-knuckle fighting under the glare of the TV cameras.

"But so many of them speak later of how scared they were at that moment; how they barely got out of the shower after the game when the thought of the tough guy from tomorrow night's opponent darkened their head space. The toughest part, a fighter once told us, is that guys like Rypien could never let that fear show. That there was no one to talk to about it."

This one also struck a cord with me:

"Symptoms of CTE include depression and suicidal tendencies. We don't know anything about Rick Rypien's death today but if anybody wants to place a cash bet that it wasn't suicide and he didn't have CTE I'm willing to give you good odds. Ultimately we, the fans who pay for tickets and cheer for fights, are responsible for the men who sacrifice their brains for our entertainment.

"This isn't intended to be a sanctimonious lecture on the evils of fighting because I stood up for every fight I ever saw in a hockey rink.

"I don't think people who like fights are troglodytes because when I woke up this morning I was a fan of hockey fights. Speaking as someone who's had some serious brain trauma though the stories of Derek Boogaard, Bob Probert and others have been on my bruised mind for a while. I like watching fights and I like it when players fight but I just don't think I can support it anymore so count me out."

Dan Murphy's response...

Great article for those that haven't seen it

Murphy on Rypien: R.I.P. Ryp - sportsnet.ca WAP (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2011/08/16/murphy_ripien/#.Tkq6IaPiKeU.facebook)

Rick Rypien was a legendary pugilist who was unable to win the battle with his own demons.

I woke up overseas this morning to the terribly sad news that Rick Rypien had passed. I'm sure much will be written over the next few days about the former Canuck, and written by those who are much more eloquent than myself, but I still felt compelled to pass on my memories of an incredibly tough kid everyone called, "Ryp".

Rypien was already a bit of a legend when he was first called up by the Canucks. And by that I mean within the organization. Sure many in the AHL knew about him, but he was still an unknown quantity as far as NHLers were concerned.

It's said that Rypien, who was mentored by Mike Keane while with the Moose, would go after anyone who even raised an eyebrow at the decorated veteran.

"No big deal," I thought.

Until I met Rick and saw he was under 6' tall and about 175 pounds. Rypien came to the Canucks with the reputation that he would take on all comers. It didn't matter how big or how tough the opponent, Rypien always wanted to prove himself.

As everyone knows, Rypien's years in pro hockey were littered with injuries. But this was not a frail kid. Once he was called up by the Canucks and Alain Vigneault forbid Rypien to fight as he was recovering from a broken hand. On his first shift Rypien crushed an Avs player with a questionable hit on the forcheck and was quickly crowded by Ian Lapperierre. You could see Rypien wanted to follow orders - for about two seconds - and then accepted the offer to what turned out to be a very spirited scrap. Post-game, Laperierre (one of the most honest players to ever play the game) said he appreciated him taking the scrap despite the injury and you could tell he also greatly respected Rypien for it. As for Alain Vigneault, all he could do was shrug his shoulders and say, "that's Ryp."

On the ice, Rick was all about his teammates. He loved to stick up for them. And you'd have to guess that's why the Canucks stood up for him over the last few years when he was trying to overcome his demons. The Canucks loved his work ethic, the way he battled and tirelessly fought to get back into top shape injury after injury.

One year, Rypien showed up at prospects camp even though I'm pretty sure he wasn't required to. Rypien set the pace in the drills and conditioning, setting an example to the younger players in attendance. He would crush the Grouse Grind in 37 minutes while the rest of the prospects were labouring in towards the 50-60 minute mark and then encourage them up. Thus supporting them while also showing them how hard they would need to work in order to get into proper shape.

Rick was a great teammate. Ask anyone. In fact two years back goaltender Josh Harding called Rypien the best captain he ever had (the two played together in Regina). Remember, Harding said this when he had already been in the NHL for a number of years. That is a great compliment.

I'll smile when I think of Rypien. It's tough not to when you look back on some of memorable moments with the Canucks. Like when he took on Hal Gill or Boris Valabik despite the fact he was giving up more than six inches and 50 pounds to each of them. Or when he went toe-to-toe with Cam Janssens last season. Or the memorable three fights he had with Brandon Prust in one game when Prust was a member of the Calgary Flames.

He was a gifted young man with plenty left to give us. And I was sure that he was going to. I kept in touch with Rick since the end of last season, exchanging the odd text here and there. He was excited about the opportunity to play with the Jets. Turning down two-year deals offered by other clubs to ink a one-year deal with Winnipeg. Why? Because he was sure that he was going to prove himself once again and earn a second year by Christmas.

I truly believed that Rick was on the road to recovery. Obviously I don't know the depth of the issues he was dealing with however it seemed like he was coming out of the darkness. More importantly it seemed like he wanted to beat what was ailing him. The Canucks kept what Rick was going through a closely-guarded secret, and for good reason, because they didn't want to force the young man to talk about his issues until he was ready to. And you know what? He was ready. A few months back he contacted me to help write his story. He was finally open to the idea of speaking about his demons. He wanted other people who may be suffering the same illnesses to know they weren't alone. He knew that because of who he was, that his voice would be heard. It is just so sad that he will never get that chance.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Rypien family.

The rule they will be talking about is no icing for the team on PK. It's a very interesting one as PK strategies will be completely different since you can't just dump the puck out but changing your PKers will be a bitch unless they alow an exception of some sort. Either way it's interesting though.

It will make the PK more effective = more goals

It will make players think more than twice to commit a penalty = perhaps

Guys with fucking knives strapped to their feet shoot what is basically a rubber bullet around at 90MPH and sometimes they FIGHT. There's no other organized team sport in the world that just lets you fight. How the fuck is this not exciting enough for stupid Americans?

You never hear people wanting to change baseball. That game is goddamn boring and I never see a stadium more than half full. Why isn't baseball full contact? Why aren't pitchers aiming for the batter? Why aren't there cheerleaders? Why isn't the ball actually made of snakes?

No no-icing while on PK is a rule that should have been made forever ago.

as TSN put it "Let's think about this one for a second. If icing isn't allowed in even strength situations then why is a team on the penalty kill, a situation in which they are being penalized, allowed to ice the puck?"

Uhhh, you're a leafs fan so you may not know it, but that's exactly why the Canucks weren't getting legitimate calls their way during the SCF. The players in question are the usual suspects: Sedins, Burrows, Kesler, (and before the play-offs, for the last 2 seasons, Luongo which is why he wasn't getting much calls for contact around the crease).

Phantom calls does occur but make no mistake, when you're labelled an embellisher/diver/whiner.... referree's do wisen up to it.

Look at Crosby and how much abuse he now takes due to whining for every single contact... or better yet, how about the Burrowsgate which was initiated from an embellishment a few games before.

But don't tell Canucks fans this. :shhh:

Dear Canucks fans

Don't worry. He's happier now. Because he just stepped out of a dressing room and onto a bench where Luc is sitting, waiting for him. Luc stands up to greet his old roomate and teammate. They both have full equipment on, and it looks like they are wearing Canucks jerseys - they seem a little blurry, but Rick sees that all of the players skating by have jerseys that are a little blurry too, as if the logo is there but not overly important. Luc, with a handful of arrows in his hand, offers Rick a stick. Now he can step out onto the ice. It's endless and he can skate and stickhandle and when he wants to pass, there is someone there to pass to, and when he wants to shoot, there is a net in front of him and when he drops his gloves, there is a keen and worthy opponent ready for a friendly scrap. The ice goes on forever and it's so smooth, it's as if a zamboni is always one stride ahead of him. And when he wants to take a break he can sit on the bench and look down upon the guys he played for, played with and played against. And he sits with Luc in hockey heaven as Luc catches arrows and Rick throws punches and it's the happiest place they've ever seen.

R3s7 in peace

Forever a Canuck
Forever in our hearts.
