"Where are all the critics now?" might be more effective.

I'm still here, BTW. I like AV. Luigi, not so muchee.

Actually, I don't dislike Luigi. Just always thought he was overrated. As I've said time and time again, it's not his fault. He was put on this pedestal and touted to be the saviour of this team and god's gift to goaltending. Management put all their eggs into one basket, so to speak, at one time. Canucks won a shit load of games last season due to awesome goal production. When that dried up, the last line of defence didn't cut the muster. His attitude didn't help his cause. Shitting on Tim Thomas, etc.

Just my opinion. Don't care if people agree with me or not.

Looks like he is more humble this time around. I feel for him in a way, but life sucks, and then you die.

I just hope Hodgson keeps doing what he's doing and doesn't get discouraged when he's not producing. Fan hype and his own high expectations are extremely large hurdles to clear.

I know I had a ton of expectations when he was drafted, and was pretty disappointed that he couldn't break into the line up or had injuries that prevented him from playing for the past few seasons. I hope he plays through all of it, and that AV doesn't cut his playing time, and hopefully we will finally see the true Hodgson that the scouts saw. I know I was quite critical back then, pondering whether he was actually a bust.

Hopefully our prospects start maturing soon. As hard as it is to say - I actually enjoyed the fast paced, go all out style of Edmonton's rookies/prospect line.

One would say the difference between the hank hit and hansen hit was hank turned his back when he was about to get hit. Weber saw the #s and decided to hit him anyways

Hitting a player in the numbers is a major no no for the last who knows how many years. Many players have been paralyzed by being hit in the numbers and pushed head first into the boards.

Pushing Hansen on the boards where his own visor cuts his nose, you would think something like that could have given a player a concussion.

Shanny really dropped the ball on this one and it shows that the NHL did all this smoke and mirrors during the offseason but in reality, nothing has changed. :suspicious:

basically they had Gillis on for his usual hit and before the interview was over Gillis went out of his way to stop the interview and take it into a direction regarding an article in the province in the "editorials" section yesterday titles somthing along the lines of "the solution" or somthing like that and it basically summed up trading a "weak minded, incapable Luongo" for Lecavlier, the article was put there by the editor and while every article in that section ALWAYS has the author listed this one did not, so Gillis was super mad there was no accountability and that they would publish it basically perpetuating all the shit "idiot" fans do etc. etc.

so then the guy on the province came on and started defending the article and he goes on this tangent about how Gillis is an asshole and he never shook his hand one time he met him in person and how gillis already knew who wrote it because TC carling had contact the province earlier on in the day regarding the article, so then he starts going this big rant about how it's always the same BS with the nucks and the GM's always have a bad relationship with the papers etc.

basically in the end i sided with Gillis that a paper would print shit like that with no accountability attached to it just pushing bullshit

and amongst all this..here is an "american" approach to our problems

A thing they say about football is that the most popular guys on any team is the backup quarterback.
That's true in hockey too, except you have to substitute "goalie" for "quarterback." And right now that's especially true in the city of Vancouver.
Poor Roberto Luongo(notes) hasn't started off the season particularly well by any measure (the .856 save percentage ahead of Thursday's win over Nashville is particularly irksome), but Vancouver Canucks fans seem as though they would have been all too willing to run him out of town with torches and pitchforks regardless of how he followed up his Presidents' Trophy and Clarence Campbell Bowl-winning 2010-11 campaign.
Luongo has been hearing the boo birds for his poor performances this season and one begins to suspect that it's merely leftover resentment and blame for the loss in the Stanley Cup Final. And granted, this is a town that's willing to burn itself to the ground after something like that, so perhaps rational thought is sooo much to ask, but really, what more can you ask of the guy? He was a Vezina finalist last year and they're willing to push him out of the way after four ugly opening games?
Meanwhile, the Sedin twins have slipped out the back door of Rogers Arena after the three games for which Luongo is under such heavy fire, without even one watery column dedicated to the question of what's to be done about their lack of production. (Like Luongo, the Sedins rebounded last night.)
They did a disappearing act even Luongo would be proud of in the Stanley Cup Final as well, potting a combined two goals and three assists in seven games. Instead, they're being framed as guys who just need a little bit of help (in the form of a big burly man to protect them), but who flatly refuse to do anything but fight their own battles.
All of it is absurd.
As most fans of NHL teams will tell you: World-class goaltenders don't just fall out of the sky. You simply can't get one through a trade these days, and they're certainly not queuing up around the block as free agents to come play in front of a bunch of ingrates who are kicking the crap out of one of the best guys on the planet because he happened to play badly in, what, three games last June?
"Oh," Canucks-supporting dullards say, "but we have a No. 1 goaltender just sitting on the bench and getting spot starts." Ah, to be Cory Schneider(notes).
To be a highly-paid professional athlete whose job it is to play 20-something games a year and be fawned all over by fans and media alike. Gee whiz, he's got a 2.03 save percentage goals-against average in his first two starts this year! His save percentage is .935! Well y'know, hey, one of those games (admittedly the one he was worse in) was against Columbus, who couldn't beat your average ECHL team these days.
But that's always the sexy thing to say, right? "Look how good the backup is. The team can trade the starter." That's the easy part. But the hard part is getting a backup goaltender to actually develop into a legitimate starter.
The only team that springs to mind as any sort of goaltending factory, where they can lose the starter and magically replace him with a player of similar value, are the Nashville Predators. Otherwise, even guys that are excellent backup goaltenders have an extremely difficult time translating that to success as a starter.
Cory Schneider has never played more than 25 games in a season, and he did that last year behind the most successful team in the league, so of course his numbers are going to look good -- particularly because he played just eight against teams that actually made the playoffs. He failed to win five of them.
But OK, let's humor the assertion that a backup can simply become a good starter because he had a good season. In the last 10 seasons, a total of 44 goalies have played largely backup roles for their teams and posted single-season save percentages north of the just-slightly-above-average .910. The number that went on to become successful, full-fledged starters is quite a bit smaller: It's just Marty Turco(notes) (2000-01), Miikka Kiprusoff(notes) (2001-02), Jonas Hiller(notes) (2007-08) and Chris Mason(notes) (2003-04, 2005-06), and the latter only qualifies if you want to stretch the definitions of "successful" or "full-fledged" to their logical extremes.
None of those guys, by the way, played more than 50 games in a single season without having played at least 57 first. So maybe Schneider, with his 37-game career, just isn't ready to be the cure-all Vancouver fans think he will be. Not yet. Maybe in a year or two. Maybe never.
Here's another thing to consider: Tim Thomas(notes) was the best goalie in the league in 2008-09 and rightfully won the Vezina. But he only played so-so hockey, at least by his standards, as the Bruins collapsed against Carolina and got bounced in the second round despite finishing the regular season one point back of a Presidents' Trophy. So the next year, they decided to have Thomas and Tuukka Rask(notes) split time more evenly, and in the end Tuukka took over the starting job as a rookie. And even though the Bruins dropped four straight to the Flyers, Peter Chiarelli reported spent the entire summer shopping Thomas and his ponderous contract to someone, hell, anyone, who would take it off his hands for a reasonable price.
No one did. And, back with the team that tried to shuffle him out of town, Thomas had one of the best seasons a goalie has ever had, and topped it off with his second Vezina in three seasons and a Stanley Cup. Vancouver fans, assuredly, know all about that. Which is what makes their eagerness to 86 Luongo, himself a three-time Vezina finalist, even more puzzling.
There was an article in the Vancouver Sun this week about how Luongo is now quite accustomed to this type of treatment — after all, unless he stops every shot and maybe picks up an assist, he's not living up to his contract. And while writers have, rightly, been quick to chide this type of behavior as being reactionary and over-the-top, they've also helped to quietly gin it up.
To wit, and just from that one article: "Martin Brochu thinks Luongo sucks," and "It's difficult to imagine another month of this. Try to picture another 11 years, which is what the 32-year-old has left on his $64-million contract."
The general thrust of the article was right: That the situation is becoming more tense by the day and may soon be untenable. But it's not because Luongo is off to another poor start here in October — historically it's his worst month behind April, which carries a significantly smaller sample size — or even because he "didn't show up" for the Stanley Cup Finals.
It's because Vancouver fans are acting like spoiled children.

from Ryan Lambert of Puck Daddy Trending Topics: The fallacy of choosing Schneider over Luongo - Puck Daddy - NHL Blog - Yahoo! Sports (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Trending-Topics-The-fallacy-of-choosing-Schneid?urn=nhl-wp15432#remaining-content)

No, it makes sense.

Current CBA says $2500 is the maximum fine.

To cost a player any more money, you have to suspend him so he forfeits salary.

I think the Weber decision is correct. I didn't think it was a dirty play. He was obviously frustrated but still, it's just a penalty...not suspension worthy. Plus Weber doesn't have a dirty reputation so give him a warning and say "Next time..."

For the lazy who wants the whole Gillis vs the Province thing in one shot. Written by PuckDaddy and VancouverSun contributor Harrison Mooney. But dont worry, its a neutral view on the situation. It just summarizes it.

Im curious what happened tonight at that Canucks Place charity event at Bayshore between the two LOL

The Province, one of Vancouver's two major newspapers, raised eyebrows this morning when they published a news editorial that espoused a trade sending Roberto Luongo(notes) to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Vincent Lecavalier(notes).
Again, that's a news editorial, not a sports column. It appeared on page A20 and was attributed to the paper, as most news editorials are, as opposed to one writer in particular.
It was an odd vehicle for a trade proposal, especially one that was no better than something you'd see on a message board. It's a wonder The Province avoided "throwing in a second round pick to balance things out."
It bemused many, but it annoyed Vancouver Canucks' GM Mike Gillis, and this afternoon, the reigning GM of the Year unexpectedly called the Team 1040, Vancouver's local sports radio station, to say something about it.
After allowing the hosts to try to guess what he wants for about ten minutes -- ten minutes of fumbling, groping questions and uncomfortably dead air -- Gillis finally brings up the editorial:
I'm having a lot of trouble with this. I don't see where there's any accountability, I don't see where this merits an editorial. If they want to weigh in and run the Vancouver Canucks, come on down here and do it.
Down here, of course, being Rogers Arena. And this was Gillis's biggest beef, apparently. Because it wasn't attributed to one of the sports writers he sees every day (or anyone, for that matters), he wasn't quite sure who to get mad at:
If [Canucks beat writer] Jason Botchford wrote this and he was down here I could go up to him and talk to him about it. And find out why. This, there's no accountability here.
It's beyond presumptuous to think that they have a say in how we operate this team in this manner. And I don't like it.
But the saga didn't end there. An hour later, Wayne Moriarty, The Province's Editor-in-Chief, appeared on the same program with some choice words for Gillis.
In response to Gillis's accusation that the editorial lacked accountability, Moriarty pointed out that most news editorials aren't attributed to a particular person:
There are very few newspapers in the world that sign editorials. The general undestanding is that it's the view of the editorial board and in this case our editorial board is three to four people, depending on the issue.
But Moriarty also added that the Province had spoken with TC Carling, the Canucks' director of communications, earlier in the day, and that Gillis was being coy on the accountability issue anyway.
He was aware very early in the day that basically I was responsible as the editor for the paper. Mike was playing a little loose with the facts there. He knew who wrote it.
And then Moriarty introduced the underlying issue here, which is that he and Mike Gillis don't care much for one another:
The only other time I've ever met Mr. Gillis, I'll be quite honest, he was quite rude to me. [...] He couldn't even reach out and shake my hand.
And then, a little lovetap:
But this wasn't about Mike. If I was Mike, I'd be more concerned that 14,000 of his premium customers were booing his number one asset.
And some posturing:
Mike's discussion around being accountable and going down to the dressing room, I mean, give me Luongo's phone number, I'll read him the editorial. That's just machismo garbage, it makes no difference to me.
Moriarty has to be the first guy in quite some time to accuse the Canucks of "machismo garbage."
And finally, a comparison Gillis would hate:
I can remember when I met Mike, thinking to myself, it was just a chip off what we'd dealt with with Mr. [Brian] Burke the previous years.
Finally, the hosts of the program, sensing some hostility, asked if the news editorial would still have appeared if, say, The Province and the Canucks were better friends. "I think we have a good working relationship with the Canucks," Moriarty responded.
I'll take your word on that.
To make things even more amusing, both Moriarty and Gillis were slated to be at the same charity event Friday night. I'll update if there's a rumble.

TBH, you can't really count on Mike to be objective and critical about the assessment of Luongo. Signing him and spending the owner's money for that amount and that length was his call and to admit that there's flaws to his chosen investment is an admission of flaws in some of his management decisions. Historically, we've seen him make correct decisions, and we've seen him make incorrect decisions.

Whether there is merit or not, by protecting his investment, he's just protecting his stake as a manager. Regardless, it's not just the "uneducated unclassy Vancouver" fans who are echoing concern about Luongos stock. Just look around the league. Hear the voice of other fanbases and see how much intimidation the name "Luongo" wields (and compare that even to Sedin(s) or Kesler). When watching Canuck games, listen to what some panelists have to say, or even fellow NHL players.

So, to anyone who chooses not to buy into the "Luongo is elite" hype, or those who are vocal about the flaws in his game, does not make you "unCanuck" or "uneducated hockey fan." In fact, outside of Vancouver, there are many like you who are thinking the same thing.

At the end of the day... it could be worse. Win or lose, we could be one of those cities that just don't care (as per Trevor Linden); but luckily we're not. So the "homer" camp need to put in just as much perspective as the "so-called" bandwagoners that we're actually THAT KIND of a city.

sammy and raymond are equal categories IMO
raymonds probably done

As of now, Raymond > CoHo but I'm seeing wayyyy more hockey sense in CoHo than Raymond ever did so I'm guessing his game ceiling is higher.

I wonder if MG goes for, benefit now, suffer later or vice versa. It's going to be an interesting decision.

I'm going to say he tries to go in Detroits path

"Contend for the next 5-10 years and win as many cups in that time"

Not:

"Reach the finals once and regress" like Ottawa, Edmonton, or Calgary

Hey Florida, we also got this guy named Mason Raymond. You should see how fast this guy can be! One of the fastest players in the league for sure! Plus he has scored over 30 goals in a single season! Tell you what, since we're buddies, we'll just take Versteeg and a 3rd round pick for him.

Booth was never going to turn it around in Florida. He hasn't been the same player for them ever since his concussion problems. Florida isn't willing to pay 4.5 million for the next 4 years for for a guy that will get them 40 points and is -31. Hopefully a change in scenery will help Booth out.

And while Florida does pick up the higher salary cap, they get expiring one year contracts instead of being stuck with (for them) a bad contract which can help them later on. They main thing might be that the get rid of Reinprecht who was getting paid a couple million to toil in the minors so that's probably how the pick got involved.

The best part of the pick is that it's our own pick that we had traded for Higgins so that means we have better leverage with an offer sheet. We also have an extra roster spot on our 23 man team.

Willes: Canucks cast shows Sami Salo love for reaching 700 games (http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Willes+Canucks+cast+shows+Sami+Salo+love+reaching+ games/5593173/story.html)
Saturday afternoon, while his teammates were congratulating Sami Salo for his game-winning overtime goal against the Minnesota Wild, Alex Burrows was busily retrieving the puck as a souvenir for the Finnish defenceman, prompting the question, why?

Pucks are saved for a player’s big moments. His 500th career goal. His 50th goal of the season. His first hat trick. None of these applied to Salo.

So what was the big deal?

As things turned out, it was Salo’s 700th career game. But it’s what those 700 games represent that tells the story here.

“We love him so much,” said Burrows. “For him to come back this year with all the injuries he suffered and taking a pay cut. And he still wants to win more than anyone. He’s a warrior.”

Great read about Booth, Reinprecht, the departures, and Higgins/CoHo's place in the lineup
Canucks get Booth, allow Sturm, Samuelsson to retire in Florida | Vancouver Sun Sports Blogs (http://vansunsportsblogs.com/2011/10/22/canucks-get-booth-send-sturm-samuelsson-to-retirement-home-in-florida/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed)

David Booth, 26, is the prized piece here. At 6’0″, he’s not overly tall, but he’s a solid 212 lbs (almost identical measurements to the very thick Raffi Torres). Booth plays a power forward’s game, too; he’s strong on his skates and he likes to hit. He also likes to score. In 309 career games with Florida, he recorded 167 points. His best season came in 2008-09, when he scored 31 goals and 29 assists.

There are some concerns, of course. Booth was a team-worst minus-31 last season for the Panthers. Granted, pretty much everyone on the Panthers finished in the minuses — being sucky will do that to you — but when you’re the worst of the worst, something’s the matter. Expect Booth to struggle in the early going as he adjusts to the Canucks’ defensively-focused system. Playing with the reigning Selke winner in Ryan Kesler will certainly help, but we’ve seen, with the recent additions of Keith Ballard and Victor Oreskovich, that it often takes ex-Panthers a little while to unlearn poor habits.

Still, defense can be taught. Booth’s high-end offensive skill, on the other hand, cannot be. He’s a solid addition, finally putting an end to Ryan Kesler’s helicopter line.

At least one hopes, especially with that contract. Like Keith Ballard, Booth arrives from The Sunshine State with a pretty hefty price tag: the Canucks will be paying him $4.25 million a season through 2014-15. Provided he works out, no one will mind, but if past experience is any indication, Canuck fans don’t have much patience for overpaid acquisitions from Florida.

As for Steven Reinprecht, the Canucks have already said that he’s on his way to the Chicago Wolves, and his $2 million price tag is too much for the team to risk eating half of on recall waivers, but don’t think he was just a throw-in. Yes, the Panthers were trying to dump the salary (that’s pretty much all this trade was in its entirety for them), but the Canucks will be more than glad to have a veteran centre just waiting in the minors in case one of Maxim Lapierre or Manny Malhotra goes down just before the playoffs, like last season.

The third-round pick matters as well. By getting it back, the Canucks are now in a position to tender offer sheets, if they so choose. Mike Gillis has proven in the past that he doesn’t care much for the unspoken agreement between GMs not to do that.

As for the guys on the way out, one will be missed and one won’t. We didn’t have much time to get to know Marco Sturm and he wasn’t all that good while he was here, so his departure won’t bother many. Here’s hoping he finds his legs in Florida, however. He’s clearly not ready to pack it in, and he’ll likely be given a bit more room there to refind his game. If he doesn’t, Florida is a sweet place to retire.

As for Mikael Samuelsson, parting is such sweet sorrow. He’s been problematic at even-strength, much-maligned as a powerplay quarterback (unfairly, if you ask me) and he’s slowly lost footspeed over his last two seasons, but his dadness, his awkward goal celebrations, and his brutal honesty will be sorely missed. Although we can still look forward to Samuelsson telling the Florida media that the Canucks can go [forget] themselves.

Samuelsson leaves a few interesting holes in the lineup. If this afternoon’s game is any indication, his spot on the Canucks’ top powerplay unit will be ably filled by Sami Salo, a solution that will likely add some shootiness to a group often prone to over-passing. He also leaves the door open for someone else — say, Dale Weise — to be Alex Burrows’ post-penalty kill replacement on the top line with the Sedins.

There are other small shockwaves that this trade sends through the lineup. Clearly, Ryan Kesler’s other linemate is going to be reconsidered as well. Cody Hodgson was benched in the third period of tonight’s game; does he get another chance there? If not, does Chris Higgins, forming an All-American trio? Will Mark Spector cut the Canucks some slack if they have a line like that? No Danes and Swedes here, pal.

If Higgins presses Hodgson out, does this mean the return of Cody’s dark times? I don’t think so. It looks like it will take him a little more time to learn the wing than everyone thought, though, and I’m sure the Canucks would rather those growing pains happen on the third line than the second. Expect him to line up with Manny Malhotra and Jannik Hansen going forward.

And finally, a word on the fact that this is yet another trade with Florida. It’s weird. See @JeffCoolHo‘s helpful infographic for just how absurd their relationship is becoming:
