Zack kassian - YouTube
Couple quotes from today.
Mason Raymond: "I'm not going to go out and totally revamp my game. You can be a well-rounded player no matter what you're needed to do."
Zack Kassian on vaulting to second line: "I didn't expect anything. I'm working hard because it can be taken away from you in a second."
AV on Booth-Kesler-Kassian: "They've got speed, size and skill and two of the three have a little edge. If it works out it's a good line."
AV on Raymond as fourth liner: "We're going to need him down the road, need that 25-goal scorer, but I've got to look at the big picture."

Good move, Coach AV! Putting Kassian on the second line gives that line more size with scoring punch.
Was Kassian playing on the second unit powerplay during the Buffalo game last week? -missed most of the game, only saw the highlights.
Kass has the size to block the goalie's view of the puck and the hands to put the puck into the net. He's worth a try on the PP.
Completely Canuck-related and extremely relevant, ironic, and bittersweet:

@theScore: The Boston Bruins have announced that the club has signed 10-year NHL veteran G Marty Turco to a one-year contract. Change of plans | The Score (http://thesco.re/yiOVMm)
Turco will be placed on waivers, and can join the Bruins on Wednesday if he clears. He will not be eligible to play for Boston in the playoffs.

Im not 100% sure how it works but doesn't that mean there's like 23 teams that can claim him off waivers before he actually gets to Boston?
Turco's fall from grace is kinda sad. his career fell apart from being a top 5 goalie to not playing anywhere over like 1 year. Same as Brodeur altho Brodeur is older

you dont know what i mean because you missed the point. i didnt compare the 2, i just pointed out similarities in their downfalls.
turco and brodeur both went from top 5 goalies to playing absolutely terrible over one summer.
turco was a stud in dallas for a decade until 2010. the next year he didnt get re signed, and the year after he didnt have a job
brodeur was arguably the best goalie in the league until 2010. the next year he struggled to salvage the season and is now being outplayed by his backup johan hedberg.

In all fairness, after Brodeur's horrible tanking and injury last season, he's played decently well this year...
one of the main reason's why Devils are in a playoff spot too.....

I see. But for Brodeur, I think it is expected anyways. He is 40 years old afterall. He should be retired by now.
Turco isn't young either. He's 37.

Toronto should pick Turco up, their goalies are absolute shit and if they have any chance on makin the playoffs they should use him. Plus fuck up Boston in the process....... fuck the first reason. Fucking Boston up is the only reason they need.

Good article on Kass as well!
MacIntyre: Canucks' Zack Kassian forced to grow up fast (http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/MacIntyre+Canucks+Zack+Kassian+forced+grow+fast/6255015/story.html#ixzz1oJfTb1Ix)
Zack Kassian looks so much a man among men it is easy to forget how young he is — even for the big brother who helped raise him.
“A lot of times, people don’t realize he’s just 21,” Mike Kassian said Monday. “People look at him like he’s a man, but he’s still a boy. And sometimes he does boy things. With the things that happened, he had to grow up really quickly.”
You wouldn’t have known any of this from watching Zack Kassian play Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada as the big power forward from little Kingsville, Ont., had one goal, an assist, seven hits and helped drag the Vancouver Canucks back into their game against the Buffalo Sabres.
His 21st birthday was six weeks ago.
Kassian could still be playing junior hockey in Windsor.
This is his first professional season. His minor-league apprenticeship lasted all of 30 games with the Rochester Americans.
Last week’s shock trade for Cody Hodgson brought the Sabres’ prospect to the Canucks. He may never leave the National Hockey League.
Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said Monday that the team’s pro scouts believed the 2009 first-round pick would be a top-six forward in the NHL.
“How long that’s going to take him, I’m not quite sure,” Vigneault said.
Apparently, 2˝ games. Vigneault promoted Kassian to the second line from the fourth on Saturday and Kassian, Ryan Kesler and David Booth dominated physically. Booth and Kassian scored in the third period before an empty-net goal secured the Sabres’ 5-3 win.
Kassian, whose boyish thing Monday was arriving late for practice, skated with Booth and Kesler, and the line will likely stay together for tonight’s game against the Dallas Stars. Skewed only a little by Kassian’s 230-pound frame, the trio average 6-2 and 215 pounds and have the power, size and skill to become a modern-day Legion of Doom.
“At least I can keep up in the weight department at 220,” Booth said. “When you have speed and skill and size, that’s pretty hard to defend. With the way guys train ... if [Kassian] dedicates himself over the next couple of years, there is no limit for him.”
Kassian has dedicated himself to hockey pretty well so far.
His dad, Mike Sr., died of a rare heart abnormality when Zack was eight. A mother of four, Shirley Kassian ran a cleaning business to support her family. Her husband had worked at the Chrysler plant in Windsor.
“My mom is an unbelievable person to be able to do what she did,” Zack said. “When I look back, it was crazy how she was able to do it all. I feel very grateful. If it wasn’t for her and my siblings to look out for me, and for my older brother to be a father figure, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Shirley Kassian visits later this week to help Zack settle in Vancouver. Amber, 24, the younger of Zack’s two sisters, is flying in from Alberta.
Mike Jr., 32, who works in sales for Spirol Industries, which supplies components for manufacturing, hopes to visit Vancouver in the spring. The eldest Kassian child is Stephanie, 34. Zack is the baby.
“Growing up without a father, but being very family oriented, we always did things together,” Mike said in a telephone interview. “There was so much family support. We had grandparents’ help, and my mom, my older sister, aunts, uncles, teachers, everyone.
“I always worried about my younger siblings. How were they going to grow up? What was life going to be like for them [without dad]? What would other kids say? But I think that bump in the road and that terrible situation for Zack also gave him courage and made him a stronger person.”
The Kassian kids all get checked annually to make sure they’re not developing the same heart condition that afflicted their father.
“Right before my draft, all the NHL teams that were interested in me made me go do heart scans and those crazy things,” Zack explained after practice. “I do get checked every year, me and my whole family, and everything is good.
“What happened to my father was a fluke. You can’t live scared and wonder if it will happen to you. You’ve got to move forward. It was a very rare disease.”
Mike Kassian spent a lot of time with his little brother. Instead of going out with friends on the weekend, he’d hang out with Zack. Mike said it never felt like a sacrifice.
But Shirley joked in an interview a couple of years ago: “I blame Zack that I don’t have any grandchildren because [Mike] is always with him. He’s always been there for him, always a phone call away, makes sure he has everything. He says: ‘Don’t worry mom, I’ll take care of him.’ ”
Although nothing can compare to the loss of his father, there have been other bumps along the way for Zack. Two year ago, he was suspended 20 games for targeting the head of an Ontario League opponent, and a scuffle outside a Windsor bar resulted in an assault charge that was dropped when Kassian agreed to a fine and community service.
“Some of the things that happened were definitely tough,” he said Monday. “But there’s no choice but to learn from them and move forward and mature as a person.”
Asked about this season and how much his life has changed, Kassian said: “It’s flown by, to be honest. My time in Rochester, I don’t even remember it that much now. I’m just trying to take it a day at a time and trying to get better each day. If you’d asked me a year ago about being on the Vancouver Canucks, I would have laughed. It’s an awesome opportunity.
“I’ve just turned 21. I still have a lot of things to learn. I’m going to be a sponge and try to learn things as soon as possible. But saying that, it takes time and years in this league to fully mature.”
Imagine then, the player Kassian could become.

I really feel bad for leafs fans sometimes. The team hasn't made the playoffs in years. Traded for Kessel but gave up so much for him? Drafted players like Schenn and Kadri that has yet to prove their worth. Wilson got an extension before he got fired....
Basically after all that shit, they still go to the games. I give them props for doing so.

Leafs GM Burke hangs up during Toronto radio interview (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=389625)
Brian Burke's on-and-off relationship with the hockey media in Toronto continued on Tuesday as the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager took issue with the line of questioning from a Toronto radio host before abruptly hanging up in the midst of an interview.
Questioned about a variety of topics from his off-ice initiatives to the firing of head coach Ron Wilson, it was a question about Burke's own job security was the final straw. When host John Moore of Toronto's News Talk 1010 asked Burke he felt he was 'close to the door,' the NHL executive went on the defensive.
"I wish you'd told me before you asked me to do this interview that that was going to be your last question," Burke said. "A nice little cheap shot before you get off the air."
When Moore persisted and re-asked his question, Burke was short with his response. "No, I don't [worry about getting dismissed]," Burke said just moments before hanging up. "I think it's in ignorant question, and a gutless one, too."
It's not the first incident Burke has had with the hockey media since taking over in Toronto. Earlier this season, he criticized a reporter for getting injury updates from goaltender James Reimer's mother. Other columnists - including print and broadcast media - have on numerous occasions criticized the GM's interactions with the press.
Tuesday's interview started with talk about the 'You Can Play Project' (led by Burke's son Patrick) before switching to discussing on-ice issues - including a critique from hockey commentator Don Cherry about a lack of Ontario-born players on the Maple Leafs.
"I have no interest in escalating an argument with Don Cherry," said Burke. "And I don't know what set him off on that rant, because we actually have had a good relationship, historically."
"Let's look at a few facts. I've run three drafts here, and in those three drafts that I've been here, we led the league with eight Ontario-born players drafted... The notion that we don't like Ontario kids, that's garbage....Somehow in Canada, have we started differentiating between Western Canadians and Ontario boys or Quebec boys? Because I don't draw that distinction."
Burke also fielded questions about Wilson's dismissal by correcting misconceptions about their relationship.
"We've been friends for 40 years," Burke stated. "It's been incorrectly reported repeatedly that we were roommates in college. We were not. It's been reported, repeatedly incorrectly, that I hired Ron. I did not. But we've been friends... it was very difficult to fire him. But I'm also confident it was the right time and the right thing to do."

However in this case, I do see Burkie's side. I know with almost all interviews, its agreed to before hand what topics will be discussed. It seems like Burke agreed to go on air to talk about this charity for his late son and got ambushed by the reporter.

He has a stanley cup. That's one better than a lot of GM's.
For starters.
He also brought Vancouver back from the dead in the early 2000's.
IMO Burke gets a lot of flak for being such a publicly outspoken figure. When he took over the TML, their club was messed. Messed to a similar level as the Flames. I think the Leafs are headed in the right direction and have pieces in place for at least the next couple of years anyways to be able to make serious runs at the playoffs. Once you're in the playoffs, anything can happen.
If Burke didn't give Grabovski 5.5M/yr, somebody else would have on July 1. I think that's overpayment, but given what is on the market this summer to replace Grabovski, his hands were kind of tied. If they miss the playoffs this year, lose Grabovski to UFA and cannot replace him, then they will in all likelihood take another step back next season. Problem with this signing is it raises the bar for Kessel and Lupul, oh well, not our problem.
The Flames on the other hand seem to be wallowing in the same mould of just barely making/missing the playoffs, so not bad enough to get a great draft pick and not good enough be considered better than mediocre.

Bit more than I would have wanted to pay Grabo but there wasn't much available in FA if they let him walk and he likely would have received that much elsewhere given the market.
Grabo has skill and isn't afraid to sacrifice his body to make a play, he goes into those greasy areas like no one else on the team. I didn't like him when he first came to the Leafs, being a Hab, but he earned my respect.

kronwall was waiting for the hit and charged in, he hit him so hard he didnt even look at voracek

The play that kronwall makes for those hits is such a simple play to make I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often
I've gotten a few majors in the ASHL for similar bumps along the boards, it's pretty tough to scoop the puck up without puting your head down whether you be in the corner or on the sidewall

Educate me here with the standings. In the NHL does the top 3 teams in respective divisions rank as top 3 seeds? This is very absurd compared to the NBA. I still don't understand playing 6-8 games a year within your division and often times play nothing against eastern teams. This does NOT reflect each team's abilities against the league overall.

I understand they're great players, but they've been playing horribly.
I find it funny how you mention Malholtra's pros, but not Raymond's :lol
Everyone on the Canucks plays a specific role. The Sedin's aren't used for those roles you mentioned. The same can also be said for Malholtra/Raymond. Has either ever been considered a Hart candidate? Can either score [more than 20 goals] multiple seasons? Can either play on the powerplay efficiently? Can either take faceoffs in the offensive zone and make an impact?
It's comparing apples to oranges.
The only time you should be REALLY worried is the Sedin's being "invisible" in the playoffs for when it "really matters". The Canucks are guaranteed to finish top 3 with 15~ games remaining. I'm sure they'll find their game

Where is the Canuck killer instinct? Mental mistakes in their own zone. Two on one chances given to Dallas. Where is the power in the powerplay?
The PP is becoming too predictable. They gotta stop doing the back pass in the neutral zone on the breakouts during the PP. Canucks need a new look on the powerplay. How about putting Kassian in front of the net on the PP?

We're supposed to be gearing in towards the playoffs, and with this huge bunch of games at home, I think its kind of counterproductive; we're too tentative, too comfortable. Something needs to be done period.

Yeah. Anyone who's played hockey at a somewhat competitive level knows it's not as easy as throwing on a switch. You get into a groove, and the Canucks are not in a good one as of now. Our top 2 centres have 1 goal in the last 13 games. That's just not good enough.

What's the point of "getting into a groove", dominating weak competition in the next 15-16 games remaining and having nothing left in the tank in the playoffs?
The argument of "The Sedins need to put up points/dominate their opponents every game" is the same argument earlier this year when the Canucks were 13th in the standings [EARLY in the season] and needing to go "82-0".
There's still tons of games to be played. It's better to pace yourself than tire yourself.
The only thing we should be worried about is guys getting injured and having someone like Raymond play in the top 6 to provide offense. That's when you should be REALLY scared.

03-06-2012, 10:06 PM
Huh? Why wouldn't you want to get in a winning groove? There are 15 games left in the season, and winning a couple of them can do wonders for confidence. Playing lazy and not giving a shit can only develop bad habits. No one said the Sedins need to dominate, but they definitely need to find their game.
There is a difference between pacing yourself and playing like shit.

Like I said, it's better for the team to pace themselves than blow their wad, and blowout the opposition every night. The Canucks are currently on a 2 game losing streak, but people are making it a big deal like when they were 5-6 early in the season with LOTS OF GAMES TO GO.
This happened last season aswell. They were playing like shit but found their game, went 15-4 in the final games into the playoffs.
Just relax. The Canucks will "get into a groove" and so will the Sedins

Not so much the team I'm worried about but more so the Sedins and Kes. They're not producing and it hasn't just been a couple games, it's been quite the stretch here. I understand the whole philosophy of being comfortable in the standings and cruising into the playoffs - but becoming complacent can only lead to failure imo. I just can't believe they haven't been trying to produce for the past 20+ games.

A bit uneasy when your team's top players aren't producing at all.
Maybe more forgiving if they are getting points here and there, but still losing the game.
But when it looks like your top players are just completely shut down, I don't buy it.

I guess it's easy to nitpick at the twins cause lets face it, if they're not scoring or producing chances, they're pretty much doing nothing at all. That's why they tend to look invisible out there.

What's the point of divisions if you have a 3rd seed team with 75 points and the 9th team to have 80 points, yet the 80 point team does not make the playoffs? :fulloffuck:
Hockey is fun to watch but their traditions and rules really boggle my mind.

I think right now is about the worst it's ever been, with Florida sitting in 3rd in the Eastern Conference with 74 points, but Ottawa sits in 7th with 78 points.
While theoretically it may be possible that a division leader has fewer points than eight other teams in the two other divisions, it's very unlikely to happen... so I would say right now is about the worst it can get.

Terrible game last night... and the score already flatters the Canucks. The Stars missed about four open nets chances.
At the same time, being in a slump now isn't the worst thing in the world. There's no reason to believe the team can't turn it around, and if they are going to slump at some point in the season, it might as well be now, and then hopefully they find their groove back just before going into the playoffs.

Suspension worthy? He had his head down but it was straight to the head.
Their stars are struggling and not surprisingly so are the Vancouver Canucks.
With the Sedins and Ryan Kesler silent, the Canucks suddenly are looking like a rather ordinary team.
They scored first Tuesday night, but couldn't do much after that and dropped a sloppy 5-2 decision to the Dallas Stars at Rogers Arena.
The loss was the second straight in regulation for the Canucks. That hasn't happened since early November, when they dropped back-to-back games in Minnesota and St. Louis.
The Canucks have now lost four of their last five games, which is their worst slump of the season.
Henrik Sedin has gone six games without a point, while Daniel Sedin has one point in the last six. Kesler has scored one goal in his last 13 games.
To make matters worse, the Sedins and Alex Burrows struggled on defence and were on the ice for both Dallas goals in the third period.
Coach Alain Vigneault continues to preach patience with the Sedins.
"Those guys have been the foundation of this team since I have been here and I have a lot of trust and faith in them," he said after the game. "You have to trust that they are going to figure it out."
The twins and Burrows were a combined minus-seven on the night.
"Their game is definitely not where they want it to be," Vigneault said. "We can say they are getting chances, we can say all the right things, but at the end of the day they are our offensive players, they are there to produce and right now they are fighting it a little bit."
Henrik Sedin seemed reluctant to acknowledge that he and his brother are indeed struggling.
"I thought we played a pretty good game," Henrik said. "We made a few mistakes, but I thought we had enough chances to win the game. It seemed like the breakdowns we had turned out to be a goal for them.
"There comes a time when creating chances isn't good enough. You have to score goals to win games and that's where we are right now."
The Stars, who are now 8-1-2 in their last 11 games and beat the Canucks in over-time last weekend in Dallas, got a big insurance goal from Jamie Benn at 4: 25 of the third period. Seconds after teammate Adam Burish had fanned on an empty net, Benn got the puck in the left circle and beat Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo to give the Stars a 3-1 lead.
Canuck defenceman Alex Edler made it interesting at 7: 55 of the third when he skated up the middle of the ice and put a long shot over the right shoulder of Dallas goalie Richard Bachman.
But the Stars scored off the rush at 11: 11 of the third when Mike Ribeiro converted a goal-mouth pass from Michael Ryder and restored their two-goal lead. Stephane Robidas added an empty-netter with four seconds remaining.
Winger Chris Higgins, who had a goal and assisted on Edler's third-period goal, suggested the Canucks are perhaps not as motivated as some of their opposition, who like the Stars are battling for their playoff lives. The Canucks, with a huge lead in the Northwest Division, seem destined to finish either first or second in the Western Conference.
"The playoffs have started for a number of teams already," Higgins said. "They are battling every night just for the two points in the standings. We have to find that hunger as well. We have to find that hunger to win the conference, be the best team in the Western Conference. It helped last year with the home ice [advantage] through those first three series."
The Canucks grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6: 45 of the second period when Higgins beat Bachman stick side with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle. The play started when the Stars turned over the puck at the Vancouver blue-line. Dallas defenceman Alex Goligoski then blew a tire, allowing Higgins room to skate down the right wing.
But the Stars got two quick goals late in the second to grab the lead. A Trevor Daley pass hit the left skate of Loui Eriksson and got by Luongo at the 16: 44 mark. The power-play goal came with Burrows off serving a slashing minor.
Ribeiro put the Stars in front when he beat Luongo on a 2-on-1 rush with Ryder. Ribeiro hung onto the puck and was allowed to skate in close on Luongo before snapping a shot over the left shoulder of the Canuck goalie. The goal came with 23 seconds remaining in the second period.
"This one was a tough one to assess," Luongo said. "I really don't know what to make of it. It was a weird game, a lot of their goals came from right in the goalmouth ... Obviously that is not the type of hockey we want to be playing. Luckily, they didn't connect on most of them [odd-man rushes]."
The highlight of a scoreless first period came early. Zack Kassian was awarded a penalty shot 24 seconds into the game when he was hooked from behind on a breakaway by Dallas defenceman Mark Fistric. Kassian lost the puck as he tried to move it to his backhand as he skated in on Bachman.
"To be honest I was pretty nervous," Kassian said.
"I was gripping the stick pretty tight. It was tough, it's always tough not to convert on those. I do that move all the time, but I was just a little nervous and the puck slid off my stick."

My understanding was that Kesler was a more "sure thing" to actually play in the NHL. I thought and still think that this line of reasoning is a load a crock. It is this mentality that has eroded the talent in the NHL and turned it into rugby on ice.
Don't get me wrong, Kesler is a nice player, but he is at best a #3 center for sure. I cannot imagine him getting 60+ points as a 2nd line center on any team in the NHL.
Tambellini has the skills to be a 2nd line player/winger. But he also has the ability to best and never play and NHL game.
This one still bugs me as a Canucks fan, but I can also see the Canucks reasoning with Federov, Reid, Kariya... the Canucks have taken chances and had these players blow up in their faces.

Here's the story if you don't want to click the link
So, Rich Pilon, how does it feel to be immortalized in the bronze Mario Lemieux statue unveiled today in Pittsburgh, with Le Magnifique splitting the New York Islander defence pairing of Pilon and Jeff Norton for all eternity?
"To tell you the truth, it's very cool," Pilon told TSN, just minutes after the statue was unveiled in Pittsburgh. "I have no problem with it. If you're going to get beat on a play and it's there for everyone to see forever, it might as well be Mario. He did that to a lot of defencemen."
Pilon wasn't aware he was part of the statue until he got a text shortly after 12 noon today from his old buddy and former teammate Dean Chynoweth.
"I remember the play pretty well," Pilon said. "I have the photo, actually. Someone I know had a hockey calendar with that photo (taken by Sports Illustrated's Paul Bereswill) and they sent to me. It's right up there on my office wall. So I remember the play well. Mario scored a lot of his big goals against the Islanders.
"That was my rookie season (Dec. 20, 1988). No shame in a rookie getting beaten like that by Mario. It was a privilege just to play in the NHL and against players like Mario."
The Penguins say they chose that particular image as the basis for the statue because "it was a metaphor for everything Lemieux accomplished in his career and his life, breaking through defenders, overcoming obstacles, turning back challenges."
Pilon certainly recovered from that Lemieux goal. He went on to play 631 regular season games over 14 NHL seasons, mostly with the Islanders but also the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues.
The 43-year-old is now living in Saskatoon with his wife and two children. He notes he's been sober for seven years and life is good, working with Cameco, the uranium mining company.
"I'm doing a project called Dream and Believe," Pilon said. "It's aimed at kids eight to 14 years old in northern Saskatchewan communities and we're using hockey to help them stay away from (substance abuse). So I'm at a good place right now and doing well."
And that's even with Mario beating him and Norton for all eternity.

Cmon now, you're comparing apples to oranges
Sedin vs Kronwall, and the fact that Kronwall lined that hit up (his go to hit that he is KNOWN for), as he does with his other ones, which Sedin never does (and has no reputation for), as I've only seen him do the usual non vulnerable body checks to the boards.
An injured player on the ice (regardless of dirty/clean hit) SHOULD pretty much automatically equate some kind of response from the injured players' team. Seeing the Buffalo team have no response when Lucic ran into Miller was absolutely retarded and shouldn't have been the case. Even for a majority of the clean hits, I always see the player throwing the hit drop the gloves (even immediately when the opposing player is skating towards him), not because he has to, but because he should and to own up for his actions and a sign of respect.

Dependent on injury + degree of the hit for sure; but if the player is lying on the ice like Jakub, clearly injured, passed out, I damn well hope Kesler answers to drop the gloves, like I said in the previous post, not because he has to, but for respect out of the player, and not to be a COWARD.
Being a star player vs grinder makes a huge difference IMO, you get "star treatment" from the league and then you got your teammates who are gonna step in for you when their tough guy comes at you (a la Ovy).
Also keep in mind, for the hit I was talking about, no penalty was called on the play which means Kronwall pretty much got away with a borderline hit, and since there's so much ambiguity in rule 48.1, he likely won't be suspended, as its pretty much up to a judgement call from Shanahan. Kronwall has a reputation for that hit, and hes done it time and time again and just skates away to the bench without a scratch or penalty. Pretty sure the Flyers bench was fuming and went to challenge Kronwall as the game progressed. If the league didn't look at suspensions for head shots like they do now, I'm pretty sure the Flyers would of went head hunting

An injured player on the ice (regardless of dirty/clean hit) SHOULD pretty much automatically equate some kind of response from the injured players' team.
I see where you're coming from about standing up for your own teammates, but I'm not sure I can agree with a response regardless of clean/dirty hit. How many times have we seen players 'injured' to try and draw a penalty, only to pop up and play the next shift?
It's one thing to respect and stick up for your own teammates, but its also important to keep the integrity of the game. If your teammate gets destroyed cleanly because his head was down knowing that a big hitter is on the ice, the way to call that even is to make a clean hit back. Don't jump the guy, try to pick a fight, call him out for not fighting you, whatever, he's only doing his job (in this case Kronwall actually had a great scoring chance after the hit).
I don't think this hit was a targetted headshot, Kronwall was going to lay that hit anyways like he's done so many times. Just so happened Voracek was leading with his head and hit his shoulder head first.
Not really racist!
03-07-2012, 01:47 PM
^ I agree with the integrity of the game; however, the head was clearly the principal point of contact and the way he landed was ugly. Some players stay down, (to fake it) for only a brief period of time but clearly, when you stay down for that long, dazed, unsure of what the hell is going on, you realize its serious business.
Looks like Jakub is gonna be the 8th player on the Flyers to suffer a concussion this season
Yeah, no doubt Voracek wasn't faking it. How does Kronwall execute that hit without hitting the opposing player head first though? To me, the bigger issue was that Voracek was leading with his head first after he got the puck when he ran into Kronwall who was going to hit him one way or another.
I've made similar plays where I was in Kronwall's position but just standing stationary at the blueline. The opposing player with his head down does not know I am there, I brace for the collision and he goes down, and I usually end up with the penalty even though I had position and didn't move or initiate the contact. This is in a non-contact league of course, but I can see this being an easy hit/play to make in contact scenarios.
Not really racist!
03-07-2012, 01:58 PM
Kronwall actually takes a stride forward before nailing him IIRC, fuck I hate that hit every time I re watch it. Usually Kronwall executes that hit with his back towards the player, but I guess in this case the shoulder of Kronwall got him nice and square. Doesn't Rule 48.1 have some leeway as to the player delivering the hit having to hold up the hit if they know it'll turn ugly?
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head– "A hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was avoidable, can be considered."
That's all it says.. and does mention the vulnerable position part.

wtf that was from 2005. Oh how time has flown and changed, its nice to look back sometimes, point, and laugh.
It sucks to see guys hurt like that, but these guys need to keep their heads up esp when they know heavy hitters are on the ice.
With 48.1 I think you can make a case that Voracek advancing and leading with his head forward and down because he didn't have puck control put himself into a vulnerable position just before the collision, while Kronwall already had him lined up and ready to go. Voracek was going to get nailed the regardless of where his head was, so Kronwall wasn't seeking the head as initial point of contact IMO

there's a chance that the canucks, rangers, wings and bruins won't even make it to the SCF. generally the teams that get there are the teams that click at the right time. sure its not the playoffs right now and guys can say the canucks are saving themselves for later but you can't just suck the last 10-15 games of the season then expect to turn it on in the playoffs.
the canucks haven't been played up to their standards for a long time now. its only getting more notice now because they aren't winning in OT/SO.
