near as i can tell his left foot was airborn and he had the snow on the bottom of his right skate blade still touching the ice at the start of contact and was airborn immediately after contact began. he was definitely jumping up into the hit tho no question about that; just timed it perfect. didn't appear to be targeting the head tho.
no suspension as series is tied 2-2. if it was 3-1 he would get a 1 game suspension to allow the rangers to get back into it.

atleast one skate was on the ice at contact. whether it the series is 3-1 or 2-2 there should be no suspension

Alex Ovechkin questionnable hit on Daniel Girardi. May 5th 2012 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8myT-qqM0TI&feature=player_embedded)
Forget the hit for a second. What a pass by Ovie from his skate to his teammate.
Wow, besides that hit, that WAS a great pass by Ovechkin.
Then his teammate hits the post with his shot.
If the puck had gone in, would it have been disallowed?
Seemed like a late penalty call on that play.
Play should have been whistled as soon as the shot was taken, or when #21 touched the puck.

1-1 this is going to be a good game today hopefully
Just asked James Duthie on twitter if a 8th place team has ever knocked off the 1,2 & 3rd seed before to make it to the finals and I never never knew a 8th place team as never even knocked off 1 & 2 before.

Dirtiest hit I've seen in a while.
nasty hit, but I can't say its THAT dirty. Guy that threw the hit got his elbow up in a split second for who knows what reason, maybe it was intent to injure maybe it was just a reflex to somebody who's about to run into you full steam. Not justifying the elbow at all, but sometimes these things can happen with the speed of the game.
Had the guys elbow been down, puck carrier still would have been destroyed on an otherwise clean hit arm to head. He was fed a suicide pass into the middle of the ice and had his head down and his head was leading. Guy that threw the hit was taller, any hit at all would have been to the head whether it was on purpose or not--there was no way to throw a hit and not hit guys head.

Although the ratings in the States have been pretty damn good this second round, I wonder what they are for here in Canada?
Once the Canucks are out, I usually watch the western teams more so than the east, but this years matchups have produced some not very entertaining games. The two series in the east have been pretty damn good though, whereas the west has been kind of boring. Maybe it's because the series are closer in the east, but in the west, its boring. It's funny though, because yesterday Don Cherry was saying how much he is enjoying the Kings-Blues series. "How hockey is suppose to be played" - voiceover on a shift by the Kings where they are just punishing the blues on the boards and it is all board work.

I really enjoyed the Kinda series but I like hard played on the boards hockey like that. Because it's the grinding that takes you places and it's not all about the fancy and nice plays in the playoffs.
^for sure. I've become a recent believer this year that your 3rd and 4th lines are what wins you a cup. Your top 2 lines get you into the playoffs, but playoff success is determined by how much your bottom 6 can turn it up.

This is the kind of thing that shows grit and determination. Something that I must say has been missing on the Canucks for a few seasons. Hell even the guns on Detroit can dig that puck out of the corner and start something.

^ It's true. In the playoffs, your top lines are so focused on that the opposing team tries to shut them down. You then need your scoring to come from your bottom lines.
That's why I think Washington can come out of the East. Their scoring is pretty spread out. Isn't Knuble, Ward, and Aucoin their fourth line?
Plus they can send out Ovie near the end of the game to win it.
^that, and Ovi playing 13 mins a game, he's 100% fresh and ready to go at the end of the game if needed. 13 mins is only like 6 of his regular shifts :D
Watching this year's playoffs makes me appreciate last year's team and season/run that much more. We made it to within a game of winning it all really with 2 lines, that were not even firing simultaneously. Sure the grinders chipped in a bit here and there, but for all intents and purposes they were not difference makers in the least.
That's why I'm more than willing to give MG a pass this year for trying to change up the formula of the team from 3 offensive lines to 2 at the trade deadline. When was the last time we saw a team score their way to a Stanley Cup?

It really shows that you need 4 lines rolling and for AV, he never really had 4 lines, it was always 3 lines for all these years.
But you gotta give props to Mcphee where he was inches away from getting fired. But look at the players he added last off season and how he's getting the returns now. Brouwer, Ward, Hamrlik. At first, I'm :suspicious , then now..:ahwow:

Patrick Kane celebrated Cinco de Mayo exactly as you’d expect Patrick Kane to celebrate Cinco de Mayo | ProHockeyTalk (http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2012/05/07/patrick-kane-celebrated-cinco-de-mayo-exactly-as-youd-expect-patrick-kane-to-celebrate-cinco-de-mayo/)
Courtesy Terez Owens — “the world’s most popular sports gossip site” — comes pictures of Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane partaking in some Cinco de Mayo celebrations at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
(Because if anything says Cinco de Mayo, it’s the University of Wisconsin.)

From the Terez Owens “tipster” comes this:
“I go to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and we had our biggest party of the spring this weekend called ‘Mifflin.’ Patrick Kane was here and was the drunkest person in Madison all day Saturday.
“Here is a pic of him passed out at our best bar, the Kollege Klub.”
http://nbcprohockeytalk.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/kane-passed-out.jpg
In a related story, Kane declined to suit up for Team USA at the World Hockey Championships because he didn’t want to risk a relapse setback in his offseason training.
“I’m healthy right now,” Kane told the Chicago Sun-Times. “I’m excited about that. I don’t really want to risk that, especially into next season. I saw the difference it could make, being healthy or not being healthy [in the summer].”
Healthy enough…TO TOTALLY WASTE YOU AT BEER PONG, BRO.
Update: Google translate says the shirt reads “five by two is equal to ten” (confirmed by the math equation below.) It could also be read as “two fives equals a 10″ — which I’ll let you mull over in the comments section.
hahaha awesome, Kaner knows how to have fun, hopefully no cab drivers were harmed this time!

Give bigger props to Mcphee for dropping Boudreau when it was the caps' big guns who have been failing the team. The big guns have still have not lived up to potential, but Hunter is making up for it and then some with his bottom 6. Imagine the Caps if they can get Ovi, Backstrom, and Semin all playing as well as they can, plus the contributions from everyone else
I was happy with our 4 lines heading into the playoffs and I think the player personnel was there, we just weren't able to get our game together for one reason or another (cough AV).
Though I'm not a fan of AV, I will acknowledge his accomplishments and credentials. Those against getting rid of AV will ask who is more suitable for the coaching job and is available. I don't know. But coaching is one position where I don't think you can ride on accomplishments and past achievements. There have been multiple instances of young and relatively inexperienced coaches at the NHL level having success by being able to freshen up and engage the group in a different way. The way I see it if your players are good enough but not playing up to potential and the team is suffering as a result, it's the coach's job to find a solution to that problem.

Statistically, LA will win the cup. They beat Vancouver.
It's the playoffs, statistics don't mean a thing. Anything can happen, all rounds up to now have proved this.

Isn't there an NHL feat that has never been done before where a team has won the cup by playing against a higher seed team in all 4 rounds?
With '94 Canucks being one of the teams to almost have done it?
Kings could be the first team to do this. (If I'm not mistaken that this hasn't been done before already)

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that centre Ryan Kesler had successful shoulder surgery to repair torn labrum.
“After consultation with our team physicians following the playoffs, it was deemed that Ryan would require a procedure on his shoulder,” said President and General Manager, Mike Gillis. “We expect a full recovery and determined this procedure would best serve both Ryan and the team’s long term goals.”

So rumour has it, Ohlund is set to retire. He has millions left on his contract - about 11.75 million broken down as (5,3.75,2,1), averaging out to 3.607 cap hit a year.
If he does, wonder what it means for their cap situation. Depending on what the rule is, that free up some space. Maybe it gives them the space they need for another big contract, while keeping Vinny.

Vancouver Canucks star Ryan Kesler likely out six months following shoulder surgery
Vancouver Canucks centre Ryan Kesler played through the playoffs with a torn labrum in his shoulder.
Photograph by: Jeff Vinnick , Getty Images
VANCOUVER — Next season will begin like last season for Ryan Kesler, who will once again be on the sidelines recovering from surgery when the Vancouver Canucks start their 2012-13 NHL campaign.
Last season, it was his hip. This time, it's his shoulder, which was operated on Tuesday to repair a torn labrum.
And the Canucks confirmed Tuesday that Kesler had played through the injury through the last third of the season.
"Ryan experienced shoulder pain throughout the year and it got to a point where he needed to get it checked out," assistant general manager Laurence Gilman said in a phone interview. "He saw two specialists (in February) and the diagnosis at that time was that his labrum was torn and the decision had to be rendered with respect to playing through it to the end of the season or getting his shoulder repaired.
"Ryan wanted to keep playing and once we were satisfied that his health wasn't going to be placed in jeopardy, we agreed to let him continue to play."
Kesler only missed the first five games of this past year's regular season after off-season hip surgery. He figures to sit out a longer stretch next season.
The Canucks pegged his recovery time at six months, meaning it is unlikely Kesler will be available until mid-November at the earliest.
"Six months is average, it can be five months, it depends on how the person heals and what the rehab is like," Gilman said.
Kesler, by his standards, had a tough season. He had 22 goals and 49 points, which was down dramatically from the 41 goals and 73 points he recorded the previous season when he won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward. His point total last season was his lowest since he recorded 37 points in 2007-08.
Gilman suggested there is little doubt that Kesler's shoulder injury affected his play.
"His productivity was down, so you would assume he wasn't playing to the level that he normally would have," Gilman said.
Kesler's surgery was performed in Ohio by Dr. Anthony Miniaci at the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Sports Health. Miniaci, a Toronto native, is a renowned orthopedic surgeon whose specialties include shoulder reconstruction, knee reconstruction and cartilage resurfacing.
The labrum is a cuff of cartilage that circles a person's shallow shoulder socket and helps make the shoulder joint more stable.
Gilman said the team expects a full recovery for Kesler.
"The nature of this injury and the type of surgery is such that players will usually have 100 per cent recovery and we expect that will be the case with Ryan," he said.
Kesler's absence early next season should create an opportunity at training camp for a player like Jordan Schroeder, who was Vancouver's first-round pick (22nd overall) in the 2009 draft.
Schroeder, 21, had 21 goals and 44 points in 76 games this past season with the AHL's Chicago Wolves in what was his second full season of pro hockey.
"Assuming that Ryan isn not healthy at the start of our training camp there will clearly be opportunities that any number of players can grasp with respect to getting a spot on our roster," Gilman said. "Jordan is a good example. He is a centre who, if he is going to play in the National Hockey League, probably has to play as a first- or second-line centre."

So unfortunate. I was hoping he would be ready to play this season when I went down to Florida to catch the Tampa and Fla games. So I was listening to team1040 and they proposed an interesting question: Who will fill Kesler's shoes for the first month of the season? Do we slot Schroeder in? Do we sign a 2nd/3rd line center?
We all know Lappy is a capable 3rd and 4th line centre, would he stay as is or be given a chance to be on the 2nd line? Do we re-sign Pahlsson and try to work with the same forward line model (checking line)?

Schroeder should get the 2nd line spot considering he's NHL ready and isn't a defensive liability like Hodgson.
But if AV is resigned, he'll probably put Raymond at center for the 2nd line :rukidding:

That argument can be seen in two ways. Momentum vs Resting up.
It's just the same argument as top seeded teams resting prior to playoffs vs low seeded teams battling for a playoff spot, already in playoff mode weeks beforehand.
But logically, I would think the rest is more valuable after the 2nd or 3rd round when the players are a bit more tired.
Probably doesn't make as much of a difference after the first round.

Well LA and STL both played 5 game round 1's, and LA destroyed STL in round 2. Pred's got owned pretty hard but they only played 1 less game than Phoenix in the first round.
Basically rest vs. momentum/rust as stated. But its the job of the coaching staff to keep the players ready while resting, and the players' own responsibility to stay ready. When you get to conference and cup and finals and it takes you a game or two to get going, you don't deserve to win.

what??
Is this a real game or some promotional event? :suspicious:
Goalie didn't even look like he was trying.
And I swear the instant replay was actually faster than the live feed.
Guarantee you he wasn't trying. No way he would disrespect him in a large event like that.

That was good acting though lol at least he waved his glove like he kind of attempted to save it instead of standing there like a stoner haha ... imagine if he accidentally tipped the puck and knocked it out lol ... he would he sweating bullets hoping he doesn't get bagged and gagged on his way to the locker room! :chop:

if putin dont score, you go to black dolphin
I'm surprised he roofed it backhand. Moreso, im also surprised he went for a deke at all, rather than shoot
I told you its unstoppable. He learns from the best, our very own Alex Burrows. :P

Kaz isn't all that bad. Their goaltender that started yesterday I think lead the KHL in goalie stats last year, or at least was top 3. something like a .925 sv% with ufa

Burrows runs into Chara in the hallway.
Fort Nucks, I (http://www.fortnucks.com/post/22906093123/burrblog5)
Jeff Vinnick took a shot of me with Big Z (Zdeno Chara) the other day and a lot of people are wondering what was said. After practice we crossed paths in the hallway leading to the practice rink and he was asking me how I was feeling after leaving the game against his team Slovakia. He is one of the toughest guys around the NHL, but I’ve only heard good things about Chara as a person and for him to check on me proves to me that he is a very genuine guy.

Chara was not hated thru out the cup run last year. He plays a fair and hard game but his teammates likes of perverly, marchard, campbell, mcquaid, thomas... are dirty players. Im glad jovo KO paille, the rookie comes into the league challenging jovocop :fuckthatshit:
