Actually you're right, most of those teams (minus SJ) had a shitty start, but are beginning to put it together. Hell, even the Avs are winning again.

I do like the fact that all teams play at least 2 games against non division teams. No more waiting 3 or 4 or whatever seasons to see certain teams come to town.

In my memory, the most entertaining Western Conference rivalry has to come from Colorado/Detroit in the 90s and then the Hawks/Canucks now

I guess if Calgary was somewhat of a decent competition, then it could be worth it to call the Canucks/Flames a decent rivalry.

All the good rivalries are out east, Flyers/Rangers. Pens/Flyers. Habs/Bruins

they will now be ale to even build up more of a hated rivalry.

That was a big problem with the playoff structure in the 80s and 90s after all of the expansion. It IS going to happen, regardless if the 5th place team is in a 7 or 8 team conference. You will also see many teams with bad records make it to the playoffs. The Canucks from 1978-1991 NEVER had a winning record (under 500) but made the playoffs 9 times. It may not happen as often in today's league but fans around the league will still bitch about it.

What would have made the most sense in a simple swap was to switch Nashville with Winnipeg. Nashville takes the spot in the Southeast and Winnipeg goes to the Central. Of course this was never in the league's plans since Detroit has been lobbying for a move to east for years.

Many earlier scenarios had one of Detroit or CBJ moving but would one of those teams take precedence over the other? Especially since Columbus is just as east as Detroit is. You now only have 4 teams in the Southeast. Which team out of Philly/Pitts/NYR/NYI/NJD do you move? Especially if you sacrifice the geographical rivalries in place?

The league didn't want to pick one team over the other and this will also allow most teams to have an easier travel schedule during the regular season. It also allows teams to have a home and home with every team in the league so we don't have to wait 2-4 years for Sid or Ovechkin to come to town.

Its not just travel thats a concern
its also Television deals. A team like DALLAS really benefits from this. It was in the pacific division and almost all its games started at 9pm local time for them

regardless of the outcome, that geographical location can't be changed. one team will get screwed regardless.
